IELTS Reading Improvement Plan

Duration: 3–4 weeks · Daily time: 1.5 h · Target: reading +1.0

Who this plan is for

Reading is your bottleneck — you run out of time or bleed points on T/F/NG and headings. This plan installs a location system and a per-passage time budget.

The one principle

IELTS reading is a LOCATION task before a comprehension task: find where the answer lives, then read that part deeply. Skim the structure, scan for keywords and their synonyms, budget time by question mix.

The route

Tick tasks as you complete them — progress is saved on this device.

Phase 1 — Method (Weeks 1–2)

One question type at a time, untimed. Learn each format's single method.

Move on when: You can state the method for T/F/NG, headings, and matching in one sentence each — and hit 70%+ on drills.

Every day

  • One reading passage, timed by its question mix (2 types ≈ 16 min, 3 types ≈ 20, 4 types ≈ 25)

    25 minmust-do

  • Re-read yesterday's wrong answers: for each, say out loud WHY the right answer is right before checking the explanation

    15 minmust-do

Within the phase

  • Study the True/False/Not Given format guide, then find that question type in a test and do just those questions

    25 minthis week

  • Study the Matching Headings format guide, then find that question type in a test and do just those questions

    25 minthis week

  • Study the Matching Information format guide, then find that question type in a test and do just those questions

    25 minthis week

  • Study the Summary Completion format guide, then find that question type in a test and do just those questions

  • Study the Synonym Matching format guide, then find that question type in a test and do just those questions

Phase 2 — Timing (Weeks 3–4)

Budget by question mix: ~16 min for a 2-type passage, ~20 for 3 types, ~25 for 4. Full tests under the clock.

Move on when: Three consecutive tests finished inside 60 minutes at target accuracy.

  • Sit one full reading test — 60 minutes strict, then mark it and read the explanations for every miss

Daily anchors

Morning: Read one passage or transcript aloud for 10 minutes before anything else — mouth and ear before eyes.

Before bed: Before bed, review the words you collected today from wrong answers (5–10 minutes, no new material).

Weekly self-review

  • Finishing inside 60 minutes yet? Where does time leak?
  • T/F/NG: are your errors FALSE-vs-NOT-GIVEN confusions? That is a method gap, not a vocabulary gap.
