Something You Can't Live Without (Not a Phone or Computer)

Gần nhất ra thi tháng 5–8/2026

Đề bài (cue card)

Describe something you can't live without-not a mobile/cell phone or computer

You should say:

  • what this thing is
  • what you use it for
  • how long you have had it
  • and explain why you can't live without this thing

Band 6.5

The answer relies on short, direct statements ('A computer is good for making things look finished, but it doesn't help me think — paper does') that state a plain contrast without much elaboration, typical of Band 6.5's clear but modest style.Câu trả lời dựa vào những câu ngắn, trực tiếp ('Máy tính giúp mọi thứ trông hoàn thiện, nhưng nó không giúp tôi suy nghĩ - giấy mới làm được điều đó') nêu một sự đối lập đơn giản mà không triển khai nhiều, đặc trưng cho phong cách rõ ràng nhưng khiêm tốn của Band 6.5.

The thing I can't live without is my sketchbook.

It's a plain notebook with thick paper, a bit worn now at the corners, that I carry in my bag almost every day. My colleague Minh actually gave it to me as a small gift when I started my job, and I liked it so much that I kept buying the same brand afterwards.

I use it mainly for sketching ideas for app designs before I put anything on the computer. When a client explains what they want, I draw quick boxes and arrows and rough screens on paper first, because it's faster than opening a design program, and I can think more freely. I also use it during meetings, just to write notes or doodle while people are talking.

I've had this current one for about eight months, but I've been using notebooks like it since university in Hanoi, so really it's been part of my work for years.

Why I can't live without it is that it's where my ideas actually start. A computer is good for making things look finished, but it doesn't help me think — paper does. If I lose my sketchbook, I feel a bit lost at work, almost unable to begin anything new. It's a simple object, but for my job, it's honestly the most important thing I own.

  • FCI use it mainly for sketching ideas for app designs before I put anything on the computer. The purpose of the sketchbook is stated directly in one sentence, sketching app-design ideas before using the computer, with no example of an actual sketch or client moment to illustrate it. That single, direct statement of purpose, without an accompanying concrete instance, is the Band 6.5 fluency pattern; a 7.0 answer would be more likely to follow this immediately with a specific remembered example.Mục đích của cuốn sổ phác thảo được nêu trực tiếp trong một câu — phác thảo ý tưởng thiết kế ứng dụng trước khi dùng máy tính — không kèm theo ví dụ nào về một bản phác thảo thực tế hay khoảnh khắc gặp khách hàng nào để minh họa.
  • LRA computer is good for making things look finished, but it doesn't help me think — paper does."A computer is good for making things look finished, but it doesn't help me think — paper does" states a fairly interesting contrast using entirely plain, everyday vocabulary ("good for", "help me think"), with no more distinctive phrase attempted even though the idea itself is a genuinely thoughtful one. That gap between an interesting idea and plain language expressing it is characteristic Band 6.5, the content can be more sophisticated than the vocabulary carrying it."A computer is good for making things look finished, but it doesn't help me think — paper does" (máy tính giỏi trong việc khiến mọi thứ trông hoàn thiện, nhưng nó không giúp tôi suy nghĩ — giấy thì có) phát biểu một sự tương phản khá thú vị bằng vốn từ vựng hoàn toàn đơn giản, thông dụng ('good for', 'help me think'), không có cụm từ nào đặc sắc hơn được thử nghiệm dù bản thân ý tưởng là một ý tưởng thực sự sâu sắc.
  • GRAIf I lose my sketchbook, I feel a bit lost at work, almost unable to begin anything new."If I lose my sketchbook, I feel a bit lost at work, almost unable to begin anything new" uses a basic first-conditional structure, accurate and natural but the most direct way available to express this hypothetical, without any embedding or a more varied conditional form.
Band 7.0

The answer gives a clear reason ('mostly about freedom') backed by a concrete supporting example (the colleague who felt 'strangely trapped' without her bike for a week), linked with natural spoken hedging, matching Band 7.0's comfortable development.Câu trả lời đưa ra một lý do rõ ràng ('chủ yếu là vì sự tự do') được củng cố bằng một ví dụ cụ thể (người đồng nghiệp cảm thấy 'bị mắc kẹt lạ lùng' khi không có xe suốt một tuần), liên kết bằng cách rào đón tự nhiên trong văn nói, phù hợp với sự phát triển thoải mái của Band 7.0.

The thing I can't really live without, other than my phone or computer, is my motorbike.

It's a fairly ordinary Honda, nothing special to look at, silver and a bit scratched along one side from a small accident a couple of years ago. My father helped me choose it when I first moved to Da Nang for work, mostly because he trusted the brand more than anything trendier.

I use it for pretty much everything. I ride it to the studio every morning, to meetings with clients, to the market, and most weekends down to the beach before it gets too hot. It's also how I get around when a friend needs picking up, or when I just want to clear my head after a stressful day at work, riding along the river with no particular destination in mind.

I've had this one for about seven years now, which is longer than I've kept almost anything else I own, including several phones and at least two laptops.

The reason I can't live without it is mostly about freedom, if that doesn't sound too dramatic. Da Nang isn't really built for walking everywhere, and buses don't go where I need to go at the times I need them, so without a motorbike I'd genuinely struggle to do my job properly, let alone see friends or get to the coast. There's also something about being outside, feeling the weather change on the ride home, that I'd genuinely miss if I only ever travelled by car or taxi. My colleague Linh once lent hers to a friend for a week and told me she felt strangely trapped the whole time, and I completely understood what she meant. It's not glamorous, but it's honestly closer to independence than anything else I own.

  • FCThe reason I can't live without it is mostly about freedom, if that doesn't sound too dramatic."If that doesn't sound too dramatic" is a natural spoken hedge, softening an abstract, slightly grand claim, that a motorbike represents "freedom", the way a speaker genuinely would in conversation, checking themselves rather than stating the claim flatly. That kind of self-aware softening is part of what makes Band 7.0 fluency sound unforced and natural rather than like a rehearsed statement."If that doesn't sound too dramatic" là một cụm giảm nhẹ nói tự nhiên, làm mềm một tuyên bố trừu tượng, hơi to tát — rằng chiếc xe máy đại diện cho "freedom" — theo đúng cách một người nói thật sự sẽ làm trong hội thoại, tự kiểm lại lời mình thay vì phát biểu tuyên bố đó một cách trần trụi.
  • LRclear my head"Clear my head" is a natural, everyday collocation for relieving stress, more idiomatic than a literal phrase like "relax" or "feel less stressed", used here without any special emphasis, as if it were the obvious word choice.
  • GRAwithout a motorbike I'd genuinely struggle to do my job properly, let alone see friends or get to the coastThe sentence builds an implied conditional ("without a motorbike I'd genuinely struggle...") and then extends it with the escalating "let alone" structure, adding a second, more extreme consequence on top of the first. That combination, conditional plus escalation, is a comfortably complex structure well within Band 7.0's range, more ambitious than the simple coordinated sentences a 6.5 answer would use to list the same two consequences separately.Câu này xây dựng một câu điều kiện ngầm ("without a motorbike I'd genuinely struggle...") rồi mở rộng nó bằng cấu trúc tăng cấp "let alone", thêm một hệ quả thứ hai, cực đoan hơn, chồng lên hệ quả đầu tiên.
Band 7.5

The extended simile - 'my friend Đức had to lead me by the sleeve to a repair shop like an elderly relative' - and the compressed, almost poetic closing metaphor about turning 'the blur into a place I can live in' show the vivid, idiomatic imagery typical of Band 7.5.Phép so sánh được mở rộng - 'bạn tôi, Đức, phải dắt tay áo tôi đến tiệm sửa xe như dắt một người họ hàng lớn tuổi' - cùng phép ẩn dụ cô đọng, gần như mang chất thơ ở câu kết về việc biến 'sự mờ nhòe thành một nơi tôi có thể sống được' cho thấy hình ảnh sống động, tự nhiên đặc trưng của Band 7.5.

The thing I can't live without is my glasses.

What they are: a thin pair with black frames, the current pair about three years old, though I've worn glasses since I was twelve, when a teacher in Hue noticed I was copying the board from the boy beside me. My eyes are quite bad — without glasses, everything past my hand becomes shapes and colours, and faces stop being faces at about two metres.

What I use them for is, honestly, everything, which is why the question is slightly strange for me. I work all day on details a millimetre wide. I ride a motorbike in a city where the traffic arrives from every direction. I read, I draw, I recognise my friends in cafés. I sometimes forget I'm wearing them, and then I take them off to clean them and the world goes soft and I remember.

How long I've had them, then, is twenty-two years in one form or another — perhaps eight pairs, each one slightly stronger than the last. I keep a spare pair in every bag I own, and one in the studio drawer, and one at my parents' house, because I've learned what happens without them. On a motorbike trip in the north last year, I stepped on my only pair at six in the morning in a guesthouse, and my friend Đức had to lead me by the sleeve to a repair shop like an elderly relative.

Why I can't live without them is not really about the objects. It's that they're the border between me and a world I can't use. Without them I can't work, can't travel safely, can't read a menu or a face. A phone I could give up with some pain. The glasses are the thing that turns the blur into a place I can live in, and I've never once put them on in the morning without a small feeling of relief.

  • FCThe glasses are the thing that turns the blur into a place I can live inThe metaphor recasts blurred vision as an uninhabitable state and the glasses as what makes the world 'a place I can live in' — an original image built specifically for this answer, not a stock phrase, which is what separates 7.5 reflection from mere description. A 7.0 answer would likely state the same idea literally ('without them I can't do anything'), while this line does the work of the whole cue-card point — why the object matters — in a single compressed sentence rather than spelling the reasoning out. It also closes the loop with the answer's opening claim that the question is 'slightly strange' for someone this dependent on glasses.
  • LRmy friend Đức had to lead me by the sleeve to a repair shop like an elderly relativeThe simile 'like an elderly relative' reframes a mundane inconvenience — a broken pair of glasses — as physical dependence, and it's extended rather than a single adjective, built through the concrete detail of being led 'by the sleeve'. This is a genuinely creative image rather than a memorised idiom, which is what the 7.5 lexical descriptor means by 'figurative touch if it fits the moment': it isn't inserted for effect, it's the most economical way to convey how helpless the speaker was without vision. A 7.0 answer would more likely report the same event plainly, missing the self-deprecating humour the simile adds.
  • GRAA phone I could give up with some pain.Fronting the object — 'A phone I could give up' instead of the neutral 'I could give up a phone' — throws contrastive stress onto 'phone' right before the sentence pivots to glasses, which the surrounding text treats as non-negotiable. This is a marked word order that a 7.0 or 6.5 answer would be unlikely to risk, since it departs from default SVO structure and only works if handled with confidence; it's exactly the kind of unusual-but-accurate construction the 7.5 grammar descriptor names explicitly. The payoff is rhetorical as much as grammatical: it sets up an implicit ranking of what the speaker values without a single explicit comparative word.Việc đưa tân ngữ lên đầu câu — "A phone I could give up" thay vì cách nói trung tính "I could give up a phone" — dồn trọng âm tương phản lên "phone" ngay trước khi câu chuyển hướng sang chiếc kính, thứ mà phần văn bản xung quanh coi là không thể thương lượng.

  1. 1. Why do some people buy things they do not really need?

    So sánh Band 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 cho câu hỏi này
    Band 6.5

'Most unnecessary buying is emotional and quickly regretted' closes with a short, plain summary sentence.'Most unnecessary buying is emotional and quickly regretted' khép lại bằng một câu tóm tắt ngắn gọn, giản dị.

I think people often buy things they don't need to feel something, not to have something. I own four spare glasses cases in colours I will never use, which I bought on days when I wanted the small feeling of buying something. People buy for comfort, status, boredom, or just the pleasure of the moment of buying, and the object itself doesn't really matter much. Advertising is also good at turning wants into needs. Social pressure makes people buy what their friends have. And sales make people afraid of missing a good deal. Most unnecessary buying is emotional and quickly regretted.

    • FCMost unnecessary buying is emotional and quickly regretted.A short final sentence restates the whole answer's point directly. The 7.5 answer instead extends the identical idea into a longer, more specific closing image involving a drawer, giving the conclusion more texture.Một câu kết ngắn nhắc lại thẳng quan điểm của toàn bộ câu trả lời.
    • LRthe small feeling of buying somethingPlain, generic phrasing. The 7.5 answer's 'the small lift of a purchase' uses 'lift' as a more precise, almost physical metaphor for the same emotional boost.Đây là cách diễn đạt đơn giản, chung chung. Cụm 'the small lift of a purchase' trong câu trả lời ở band 7.5 dùng từ 'lift' như một ẩn dụ chính xác hơn, gần như mang tính vật lý cho cùng một cảm giác phấn chấn đó.
    • GRAI own four spare glasses cases in colours I will never use, which I bought on days when I wanted the small feeling of buying something.A single sentence with one relative clause — clear and controlled. The 7.5 answer instead uses a dash to attach a further explanatory clause about the case being 'the cheapest thing available', a more layered structure.Đây là một câu đơn với một mệnh đề quan hệ — rõ ràng và có kiểm soát.
    Band 7.0

'the case itself was almost incidental' reflects on the object's unimportance rather than just describing the purchase.'the case itself was almost incidental' suy ngẫm về sự không quan trọng của món đồ, chứ không chỉ đơn thuần mô tả việc mua sắm.

Honestly, I'd say it's usually to feel something rather than to have something. I own four spare glasses cases in colours I'll never actually use, bought on days when I wanted the small lift of a purchase, and the case itself was almost incidental. To be fair, people buy for comfort, status, boredom, or simply the pleasure of the moment of buying — advertising is remarkably skilled at turning wants into needs, and social pressure makes people match what their friends and colleagues have. Sales create a fear of missing a bargain that didn't need to be caught in the first place. I'd say most unnecessary buying is emotional, brief, and regretted only later.

'More choice sounds like freedom, but it often feels like extra work' states the paradox in one plain contrastive sentence.'More choice sounds like freedom, but it often feels like extra work' nêu nghịch lý này trong một câu đối lập đơn giản.

I agree that people have too much choice when buying things today. Choosing my last pair of glasses proved this — I spent forty minutes in front of three hundred frames, and I felt less sure with every pair I tried. My grandmother's optician in Hue used to offer just two choices, and she was happy with either. More choice sounds like freedom, but it often feels like extra work. It also raises our expectations, because with so many options, we think the perfect one must exist somewhere. I think most people would prefer five good choices to a hundred confusing ones.

I think family is still important today, but the connection is looser than before. I keep a spare pair of glasses at my parents' house, because that house still feels like mine in some way, and I think most Vietnamese people feel similarly about family. But some of my colleagues only see their parents twice a year, which would have been unusual a generation ago, when three generations often shared one home. Family has become one important part of life instead of the whole of it, because work, friends and city life now compete for our time. In a crisis, though, family still comes first.

Honestly, I'd say still central here, and looser than it was. I keep a spare pair of glasses at my parents' house because that house is still, in some sense, mine, and that's roughly how most Vietnamese people feel about family — it's the place things are kept, including you. But colleagues of mine see their parents twice a year, and that would have been unthinkable a generation ago, when three generations shared a roof and every decision. To be fair, family has moved from being the whole of life to being one part of it, competing with work, friends and the city. In a crisis, though, it reappears instantly as the only thing that's really there.

I have a box in my wardrobe with eight old pairs of glasses that are useless to anyone, but I can't get rid of them because each pair has a year of my life attached to it. My nephew's grey rabbit has been to three hospitals, a wedding and the sea, and it goes with him whenever the world feels strange. Small children are often in new situations they cannot control, so one familiar object gives them a piece of home to carry around. It helps them fall asleep away from their parents and calms them when they are scared. It is also something they own completely, in a life where they rarely get to decide anything.

'which is a fairly accurate description of what it's actually for' reflects on the rabbit's role rather than just describing it.'which is a fairly accurate description of what it's actually for' suy ngẫm về vai trò của con thỏ, chứ không chỉ đơn thuần mô tả nó.

Honestly, I'd say it's because the toy stands in for safety when a parent can't be there. My nephew's grey rabbit has been to three hospitals, a wedding and the sea, and it goes wherever the world feels strange, which is a fairly accurate description of what it's actually for. Small children are constantly in new situations they don't control, and one familiar object — with its smell, its softness, its history — becomes a piece of home they can carry. To be fair, it also helps them fall asleep away from a parent and calms them in fear, and it's something they own completely, in a life where almost nothing else is theirs to decide.

Psychologists have a name for it, and most children give it up on their own around school age. Some of us just transfer it to a pair of glasses.

  9. 9. How does the media influence people's decisions about what they buy?

    So sánh Band 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 cho câu hỏi này
    Band 6.5

'Almost nobody thinks they are influenced, but almost everyone buys what the season showed them' closes with a plain 'but' contrast.'Almost nobody thinks they are influenced, but almost everyone buys what the season showed them' khép lại bằng một câu đối lập 'but' giản dị.

I think the media influences buying decisions more than people realise. An actor in a popular series wore thin round glasses one season, and within a month every optician's window in Da Nang was full of them, worn by people who would swear they chose the style themselves. The media shapes what looks normal and desirable, and people choose from inside that idea without noticing. Advertising does this directly, and films and social media do it more quietly, by showing a life and letting the objects in it become wants. Reviews also decide which options people even consider buying. Almost nobody thinks they are influenced, but almost everyone buys what the season showed them.

To be fair, advertising does it directly, while films, series and influencers do it more sideways, by showing a life and letting the objects in it quietly become wants.
