IELTS Speaking Part 2

An Invention That Has Changed the World in a Good Way

Gần nhất ra thi tháng 5–8/2026

Đề bài (cue card)

Describe an invention which you think has changed the world in a good way

You should say:

  • what this invention is
  • what it does
  • how popular it is with people of different ages
  • and explain how you think this invention has changed the world in a good way

Band 6.5

The plain closing summary - 'It's not an exciting invention, but I think it quietly made ordinary life safer and easier for almost everyone' - uses simple, high-frequency vocabulary and a basic contrast with 'but', typical of Band 6.5's modest, clear style.Câu tổng kết đơn giản ở cuối - 'Đây không phải một phát minh thú vị, nhưng tôi nghĩ nó âm thầm khiến cuộc sống thường ngày an toàn và dễ dàng hơn cho gần như tất cả mọi người' - dùng từ vựng đơn giản, tần suất cao và một sự đối lập cơ bản với 'but', đặc trưng cho phong cách khiêm tốn, rõ ràng của Band 6.5.

The invention I want to talk about is the refrigerator, which seems ordinary but has changed daily life a lot.

What it does is simple — it keeps food and drinks cold, so they stay fresh much longer and don't go bad quickly in a hot country like Vietnam.

I can see how popular it is across generations through my own family. My grandmother in Hue didn't get her first refrigerator until middle age, and she still talks about how life before it meant shopping almost every single day, because meat and vegetables couldn't be kept. My parents now can't imagine life without one. In my own apartment, my fridge is full of leftover rice, fruit, and cold coffee, and I use it every day without thinking about it at all.

Why I think this invention changed the world for the better is mainly about health and time. Before refrigerators, many people got sick from food that had gone off, especially in hot weather. Now families can store food safely for days and waste less. It also gave people, especially women who usually did the cooking, more free time, since they didn't need to shop every day. It's not an exciting invention, but I think it quietly made ordinary life safer and easier for almost everyone.

  • FCIt's not an exciting invention, but I think it quietly made ordinary life safer and easier for almost everyone. This closing sentence performs the classic Part 2 wrap-up move — summarising the whole answer in one line — using a single "but" contrast between "not exciting" and "quietly made... safer and easier," a plain and effective way to signal closure without any more elaborate coherence device. A Band 7.0+ answer might instead build to this point with a concessive subordinator ("even though it isn't exciting...") or add a further reflective layer, but here the contrast is stated directly and does its summarising job efficiently. The pairing "safer and easier" is a simple two-adjective list rather than a more precise collocation, keeping the lexical load light.Câu kết này thực hiện động tác chốt bài kinh điển của Part 2 — tóm tắt toàn bộ câu trả lời trong một dòng — dùng một sự đối lập duy nhất bằng "but" giữa "not exciting" và "quietly made... safer and easier," một cách báo hiệu sự kết thúc đơn giản và hiệu quả mà không cần bất kỳ thiết bị mạch lạc nào phức tạp hơn.
  • LRWhat it does is simple"What it does is simple" is a cleft-like opening built entirely from function words and the single adjective "simple," with no topic-specific vocabulary (like "function" or "purpose") that a stronger answer might use in the same slot. It works well as a transition into the explanation that follows, but the plainness of describing a refrigerator's role in the most generic terms possible is squarely within the "everyday, high-frequency words" ceiling set for Band 6.5.
  • GRAMy grandmother in Hue didn't get her first refrigerator until middle ageThis is a single clause with one prepositional phrase ("in Hue") and one time expression ("until middle age") attached, but no subordinate clause layering a reason or consequence onto it, keeping it firmly in simple-sentence territory. A Band 7.0 or 7.5 version might extend this into a complex sentence with a relative clause ("my grandmother, who didn't get her first refrigerator until middle age, still...") to link it more tightly to the following sentence about her memories. As it stands, it's accurate and clear but represents the more basic sentence-building the Band 6.5 descriptor describes.Đây là một mệnh đề duy nhất với một cụm giới từ ("in Hue") và một cụm chỉ thời gian ("until middle age") được gắn vào, nhưng không có mệnh đề phụ thuộc nào xếp thêm một lý do hay hệ quả lên trên nó, giữ nó chắc chắn trong lãnh địa câu đơn. Một phiên bản Band 7.0 hay 7.5 có thể mở rộng điều này thành một câu phức với một mệnh đề quan hệ ("my grandmother, who didn't get her first refrigerator until middle age, still...")
Band 7.0

The answer builds a reasoned argument, closing with a developed claim ('I'd argue it's had more direct impact on ordinary Vietnamese life than almost anything else invented in the last century') supported by a concrete daily-life reason, which is the reason-plus-development Band 7.0 targets.Câu trả lời xây dựng một lập luận có lý lẽ, kết thúc bằng một luận điểm được triển khai kỹ ('tôi cho rằng nó đã có tác động trực tiếp đến đời sống người Việt bình thường nhiều hơn gần như bất kỳ thứ gì khác được phát minh trong thế kỷ qua') và được củng cố bằng một lý do cụ thể từ đời sống hằng ngày, đúng kiểu 'lý do kèm triển khai' mà Band 7.0 hướng tới.

The invention I'd like to talk about is the electric rice cooker, which sounds like a small thing but has genuinely changed daily life in Vietnamese homes.

What it does is fairly obvious - you put in rice and water, press one button, and it cooks the rice and then keeps it warm for hours without you having to watch it or worry about burning it, which used to be a real skill.

How popular it is across generations is easy to see just from my own family. My grandmother still remembers cooking rice over a wood fire, checking it constantly so it didn't burn, which took a lot of attention. My mother has had the same rice cooker for probably fifteen years, and it still works perfectly. In my own kitchen, I use mine almost every evening, and honestly I wouldn't know how to cook rice properly on a stove if you asked me to.

Why I think this invention changed things for the better is mostly about the time and stress it removed from one of the most repeated tasks in a Vietnamese household. Rice is eaten at nearly every meal here, so a tool that makes it almost impossible to get wrong has an effect on daily life that's easy to underestimate. It also freed up people, especially the women who traditionally did most of the cooking, to do other things while the rice looked after itself. It's not a glamorous invention, nobody writes articles praising it, but I'd argue it's had more direct impact on ordinary Vietnamese life than almost anything else invented in the last century, simply because everyone uses it, every single day, without even thinking about it.

  • FCIt's not a glamorous invention, nobody writes articles praising it, but I'd argue it's had more direct impact on ordinary Vietnamese life than almost anything else invented in the last centuryThe evaluative claim is built in stages, first denying glamour ("not a glamorous invention"), then denying recognition ("nobody writes articles praising it"), then pivoting with "but I'd argue" into a strong comparative claim about impact, developing the point through contrast rather than simply stating an opinion. That kind of reasoned, connector-driven development, building toward a claim rather than announcing it outright, is the Band 7.0 fluency pattern.
  • LRlooked after itself"Looked after itself" gives the rice cooker a kind of agency, a mildly figurative phrasal expression used instead of the flatter "cooked without needing attention". That small reach for a more natural, idiomatic-leaning phrase, rather than settling for the literal description, is characteristic Band 7.0 vocabulary."Looked after itself" trao cho nồi cơm điện một kiểu chủ thể tính, một cách diễn đạt cụm động từ hơi mang tính hình tượng được dùng thay cho cách nói phẳng lặng hơn "cooked without needing attention".
  • GRAIt also freed up people, especially the women who traditionally did most of the cooking, to do other things while the rice looked after itself. The sentence combines a relative clause ("who traditionally did most of the cooking") with a subordinate "while" clause, accurately describing both who benefited and what freed them up in one sentence. That comfortable combination of two different subordinate structures, kept accurate throughout, is the Band 7.0 grammar range, more layered than a 6.5 answer's simple coordinated sentences, but not yet reaching for the more unusual constructions, clefts, verbless sentences, that mark 7.5.Câu này kết hợp một mệnh đề quan hệ ("who traditionally did most of the cooking") với một mệnh đề phụ "while", mô tả chính xác cả người được hưởng lợi lẫn điều gì đã giải phóng họ, tất cả trong một câu.
Band 7.5

The sweeping, precisely worded closing claim - 'a century of cars hasn't produced anything that does so much for so little' - uses a confident comparative structure and idiomatic economy of language characteristic of Band 7.5.Luận điểm kết bài mang tính khái quát, dùng từ chính xác - 'cả một thế kỷ phát triển ô tô cũng không tạo ra được thứ gì làm được nhiều đến vậy mà tốn kém ít đến vậy' - sử dụng cấu trúc so sánh tự tin và lối diễn đạt súc tích, thành thạo, đặc trưng của Band 7.5.

The invention I'd choose is the bicycle, which sounds modest next to electricity or the internet, and which I'd argue has freed more ordinary people than either.

What it does is simple: it turns a person's own legs into a machine that moves them three or four times faster than walking, carries loads, needs no fuel, and costs almost nothing to run.

How popular it is across ages is easy to see in my own family. My grandmother rode a heavy black bicycle for fifty years, carrying rice, chickens and, at various times, all three of her children on it at once. My parents rode to school and to work before motorbikes took over Vietnam. I ride one to the beach every morning and to the studio most days, partly for my back and partly because it's the only vehicle in Da Nang that never sits in traffic. And the children in my alley learn on the same battered bicycle passed from family to family, wobbling between the walls with a parent running behind. It's the one machine every generation I know has used and loved.

Why I think it changed the world for the better: because it gave mobility to people who had none. Before the bicycle, a poor person's world ended where their feet gave out. After it, a farmer could reach a market twenty kilometres away, a worker could take a job in the next town, and — this is the part I find moving — women in many countries got their first independent way of leaving the house, which changed what they could do with their lives. It's still doing this: in villages, a bicycle is the difference between a girl finishing school and not. It's healthy, clean, silent and cheap, and a century of cars hasn't produced anything that does so much for so little.

  • FCa century of cars hasn't produced anything that does so much for so littleThis closing line is a sweeping comparative claim, deliberately overstated for rhetorical effect, that functions as the answer's thesis rather than another supporting detail -- exactly the kind of confident evaluative close the 7.5 descriptor asks for. A lower-band answer would be more likely to end on a plain summary fact ("the bicycle is still useful today"); here the speaker instead takes a debatable position and states it with conviction.
  • LRit turns a person's own legs into a machine that moves them three or four times faster than walking, carries loads, needs no fuel, and costs almost nothing to runThe sentence avoids repeating a single adjective like "useful" or "good" and instead lists four distinct, precise benefits (speed, load capacity, fuel-free operation, low cost) using varied verb choices ("carries," "needs," "costs") rather than a string of "it is" clauses. A Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would likely compress this into one or two generic claims about the bicycle being "cheap and easy to use." The metaphor of the body as "a machine" is itself a precise reframing that carries the whole paragraph's argument in a single image.Câu này tránh lặp lại một tính từ đơn lẻ kiểu 'useful' hay 'good' mà thay vào đó liệt kê bốn lợi ích riêng biệt, chính xác (tốc độ, khả năng chở hàng, vận hành không cần nhiên liệu, chi phí thấp) bằng cách sử dụng các lựa chọn động từ đa dạng ('carries,' 'needs,' 'costs') thay vì một chuỗi mệnh đề 'it is.'
  • GRAwomen in many countries got their first independent way of leaving the house, which changed what they could do with their livesA non-defining relative clause ("which changed what they could do with their lives") is attached to add a further consequence onto an already complete sentence, rather than starting a new one -- the kind of natural clause-stacking that marks the wider grammatical range expected at 7.5 rather than the more basic "because"/"when" clauses typical of 6.5. The relative clause also does interpretive work, not just extra description, linking a historical fact (bicycle ownership) to a broader claim about women's independence. The speaker flags this as "the part I find moving," so the grammar is carrying real emotional weight rather than being decorative.Một mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định ('which changed what they could do with their lives') được gắn thêm vào để bổ sung một hệ quả nữa lên một câu đã hoàn chỉnh, thay vì bắt đầu một câu mới — kiểu chồng mệnh đề tự nhiên như vậy đánh dấu phạm vi ngữ pháp rộng hơn được kỳ vọng ở band 7.5, chứ không phải những mệnh đề 'because'/'when' cơ bản hơn tiêu biểu cho band 6.5.

  1. 1. Will the computer one day completely replace the teacher?

    So sánh Band 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 cho câu hỏi này
    Band 6.5

Uses two plain contrast sentences with 'but' rather than one flexible sentence, e.g. 'not the teacher completely'.Dùng hai câu đối lập đơn giản với 'but' thay vì một câu linh hoạt hơn, ví dụ 'not the teacher completely'.

I think computers will replace some parts of teaching, but not the teacher completely. For example, my niece's maths app knows exactly which problems she got wrong, but only her teacher knows why she was crying that morning, and that explains the mistakes better. Computers are already good at giving practice and feedback, better than a tired teacher with forty students. But they cannot notice a child's feelings or motivate them the way a real person can. The classroom will change a lot, but the teacher will still be needed.

    • FCFor example,The plain 'For example,' opener at 6.5 just introduces the fact with no elaboration; 7.0 keeps a similar signal but folds it into a longer sentence with a semicolon, and 7.5 removes the connector altogether, opening straight with the comparison itself.Từ mở đầu đơn giản 'For example,' ở band 6.5 chỉ đơn thuần giới thiệu sự việc mà không triển khai thêm; band 7.0 vẫn giữ tín hiệu tương tự nhưng lồng nó vào một câu dài hơn có dùng dấu chấm phẩy, còn band 7.5 bỏ hẳn từ nối, mở đầu trực tiếp bằng chính sự so sánh.
    • LRwill replace some parts of teaching, but not the teacher completelyThis is plain, literal wording; 7.0 tightens it into 'Replace some of the job, perhaps, replace the teacher, no', and 7.5 compresses the same contrast further into the punchier 'Replace the lecture, perhaps; replace the teacher, no.'Đây là cách diễn đạt đơn giản, theo nghĩa đen; band 7.0 rút gọn thành 'Replace some of the job, perhaps, replace the teacher, no', còn band 7.5 nén sự đối lập đó lại hơn nữa thành câu mạnh mẽ hơn 'Replace the lecture, perhaps; replace the teacher, no.'
    • GRABut they cannot notice a child's feelings or motivate them the way a real person can. This is a simple 'but' sentence stating one idea; 7.0 extends it with a relative clause about relationships, and 7.5 compresses a similar idea into a single dash-linked sentence with 'the parts of teaching that are really about relationship'.Đây là một câu đơn giản dùng 'but' để nêu một ý; band 7.0 mở rộng bằng một mệnh đề quan hệ nói về các mối quan hệ, còn band 7.5 nén một ý tương tự vào một câu duy nhất nối bằng dấu gạch ngang với cụm 'the parts of teaching that are really about relationship'.
    Band 7.0

Uses the natural hedge 'though,' mid-sentence and the reflective aside 'that's arguably what teaching actually is' for the moderate complexity expected at 7.0.Dùng từ đệm tự nhiên 'though,' ở giữa câu và câu chêm mang tính suy ngẫm 'that's arguably what teaching actually is' để thể hiện mức độ phức tạp vừa phải mà band 7.0 yêu cầu.

Replace some of the job, perhaps, but replace the teacher, no - not any time soon. For instance, my niece's maths app knows exactly which problems she got wrong, but her teacher knows why she was crying that morning, and that fact explains the wrong answers far better than any data point. Computers already deliver content and practice better than a tired human managing forty students. What they can't really do, though, is notice, motivate, and hold a child to a standard the child doesn't yet want - and that's arguably what teaching actually is. A machine can teach a motivated adult almost anything; children simply aren't motivated adults yet.

    • FCFor instance,'For instance,' functions the same as 6.5's 'For example,' but here it introduces a longer, more layered sentence with an embedded comparison; 7.5 drops any such connector and opens the example with 'My niece's maths app' directly.'For instance,' có chức năng giống với 'For example,' ở band 6.5, nhưng ở đây nó dẫn vào một câu dài hơn, nhiều lớp hơn, có chứa phép so sánh lồng bên trong; band 7.5 bỏ hẳn loại từ nối này và mở đầu ví dụ trực tiếp bằng 'My niece's maths app'.
    • LRReplace some of the job, perhaps, but replace the teacher, noThis parallel structure is more compact than 6.5's plain statement; 7.5 tightens it even further into 'Replace the lecture, perhaps; replace the teacher, no', using a semicolon instead of 'but' for a sharper rhythm.Cấu trúc song song này cô đọng hơn câu nói đơn giản ở band 6.5; band 7.5 rút gọn hơn nữa thành 'Replace the lecture, perhaps; replace the teacher, no', dùng dấu chấm phẩy thay cho 'but' để tạo nhịp điệu sắc gọn hơn.
    • GRAWhat they can't really do, though, is notice, motivate, and hold a child to a standard the child doesn't yet want - and that's arguably what teaching actually isThis long sentence strings together a triple verb list and a reflective dash clause, the one moderately complex sentence expected at 7.0; 7.5 restructures a similar idea even more tightly around 'the parts of teaching that are really about relationship'.Câu dài này nối ba động từ liên tiếp cùng một mệnh đề suy ngẫm dẫn bằng dấu gạch ngang, đúng là kiểu câu có độ phức tạp vừa phải mà band 7.0 yêu cầu; band 7.5 tổ chức lại một ý tương tự chặt chẽ hơn nữa, xoay quanh cụm 'the parts of teaching that are really about relationship'.
    Band 7.5

Opens with a compact semicolon-linked contrast, 'Replace the lecture, perhaps; replace the teacher, no', rather than a full explanatory sentence.Mở đầu bằng một câu đối lập cô đọng nối bằng dấu chấm phẩy, 'Replace the lecture, perhaps; replace the teacher, no', thay vì một câu giải thích đầy đủ.

Replace the lecture, perhaps; replace the teacher, no. My niece's maths app knows exactly which problems she got wrong; her teacher knows why she was crying that morning, and which of those facts actually explains the wrong answers. Computers already deliver content, practice and feedback better than a tired human in a room of forty. What they can't do is notice, motivate, and hold a child to a standard the child doesn't yet want - the parts of teaching that are really about relationship. A machine can teach a motivated adult almost anything. Children aren't motivated adults, and turning them into people who can be is really the teacher's job.

Band 6.5

States the contrast between the projector and the tablets as two separate simple sentences.Nêu sự đối lập giữa máy chiếu và máy tính bảng bằng hai câu đơn riêng biệt.

I think the most useful technology in schools is the simple, reliable kind. For example, in my sister's classroom, there is a projector she uses every hour, but thirty tablets sit in a locked cupboard and are only used once a month. I think the most important technology is just internet access, a screen for the whole class, and simple software for sharing work. Apps that help with maths and language practice are useful too. Expensive equipment that nobody knows how to use just sits unused in many schools.

    Band 6.5

States the washing machine and delivery-app examples as two separate 'but' sentences rather than one balanced sentence.Nêu ví dụ về máy giặt và ứng dụng giao hàng bằng hai câu 'but' riêng biệt thay vì một câu cân đối duy nhất.

I think it depends on what people do with the free time. The washing machine gave my mother her evenings back, and she used that time for a night class. But delivery apps took away my daily walk to the market, and I just used the time to sit more. Equipment removes effort, but effort was never really the point of housework. The question is whether people use the free time for something better, or for nothing. Some equipment makes people more capable, and other equipment just removes reasons to move. I think it is up to the person.

  8. 8. What is the most useful invention that people have in their homes?

    So sánh Band 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 cho câu hỏi này
    Band 6.5

Announces the opinion in a full 'I think' sentence rather than a shorter, more compact opener.Nêu quan điểm bằng một câu 'I think' đầy đủ thay vì một cách mở đầu ngắn gọn, cô đọng hơn.

I think the tap is the most useful invention in the home, more than any modern gadget. My grandmother had to walk to a well twice a day for the first thirty years of her life, but I just turn a handle and clean water comes out. This one change did more for health and free time than almost anything else at home. Running water stopped many diseases that used to kill children, and it saved many hours, mostly for women. The fridge would be my second choice, since it changed how people eat and shop. Phones and TVs are what people usually think of, but we could live without those.

    • FCI think the tap is the most useful invention in the home, more than any modern gadget.Announcing the opinion in a full 'I think' sentence is the plain, direct 6.5 pattern; 7.0 compresses this into the fragment 'I'd defend the tap against every gadget in the house, honestly', and 7.5 removes the verb entirely, opening with the bare noun phrase 'The tap, and I'd defend it against every gadget in the house.'Nêu quan điểm bằng một câu 'I think' đầy đủ là mẫu câu đơn giản, trực tiếp điển hình của band 6.5; band 7.0 nén nó thành cụm rời 'I'd defend the tap against every gadget in the house, honestly', còn band 7.5 bỏ hẳn động từ, mở đầu bằng cụm danh từ trần trụi 'The tap, and I'd defend it against every gadget in the house.'
    • LRdid more for health and free time than almost anything else at homeThis phrase is functional but slightly wordy; 7.0 tightens it to 'did more for health and free time than anything else in the home', and 7.5 trims the same idea to its sharpest form, 'did more for health and time than anything else in the home'.Cụm từ này có chức năng nhưng hơi dài dòng; band 7.0 siết chặt thành 'did more for health and free time than anything else in the home', còn band 7.5 cắt gọt cùng ý tưởng đó thành hình thức sắc bén nhất, 'did more for health and time than anything else in the home'.
    • GRAThis one change did more for health and free time than almost anything else at home. This is a plain declarative sentence; 7.0 embeds a similar idea into a longer sentence joined by 'and', and 7.5 keeps a nearly identical structure but opens the whole answer with a semicolon-linked contrast instead of a separate topic sentence.Đây là một câu trần thuật đơn giản; band 7.0 lồng một ý tương tự vào một câu dài hơn nối bằng 'and', còn band 7.5 giữ cấu trúc gần như giống hệt nhưng mở đầu cả câu trả lời bằng một sự đối lập nối dấu chấm phẩy thay vì một câu chủ đề riêng.
    Band 7.0

Places the hedge 'honestly' at the end of the opening sentence rather than the front, softening the claim more naturally.Đặt từ đệm 'honestly' ở cuối câu mở đầu thay vì ở đầu, làm mềm luận điểm một cách tự nhiên hơn.

I'd defend the tap against every gadget in the house, honestly. My grandmother walked to a well twice a day for the first thirty years of her life; I just turn a handle and clean water arrives, and that single change probably did more for health and free time than anything else in the home. Running water and drainage ended most of the diseases that used to kill children, and it freed up hours a day, mostly women's hours. The fridge would be my second pick, since it changed what people could eat and how often they had to shop. Phones and televisions are what people would actually name, but they're the ones we'd survive without.

    • FCI'd defend the tap against every gadget in the house, honestly.Placing 'honestly' at the very end of the sentence, after the claim, is a more natural spoken rhythm than 6.5's plain, unhedged opening statement; 7.5 removes the word 'honestly' altogether and relies on the blunt fragment 'The tap, and I'd defend it' to carry the same confidence.Đặt 'honestly' ở cuối câu, sau luận điểm, tạo nhịp nói tự nhiên hơn so với câu mở đầu đơn giản, không đệm ở band 6.5; band 7.5 bỏ hẳn từ 'honestly' và dựa vào cụm rời trực diện 'The tap, and I'd defend it' để truyền tải cùng sự tự tin đó.
    • LRfreed up hours a day, mostly women's hours'freed up' is a precise phrasal verb; 7.5 tightens this to simply 'freed hours a day, mostly women's hours', dropping 'up' for an even more compact, idiomatic rhythm.'freed up' là một cụm động từ chính xác; band 7.5 siết chặt thành đơn giản 'freed hours a day, mostly women's hours', bỏ từ 'up' để tạo nhịp điệu cô đọng, tự nhiên hơn nữa.
    • GRAMy grandmother walked to a well twice a day for the first thirty years of her life; I just turn a handle and clean water arrives, and that single change probably did more for health and free time than anything else in the home. This long semicolon-linked sentence is the one moderately complex structure expected at 7.0; 7.5 keeps an almost identical structure, showing this sentence was already working well at 7.0, with only 'just' and 'probably' trimmed for extra tightness.Câu dài nối bằng dấu chấm phẩy này chính là cấu trúc có độ phức tạp vừa phải mà band 7.0 yêu cầu; band 7.5 giữ cấu trúc gần như giống hệt, cho thấy câu này đã hoạt động tốt ngay từ band 7.0, chỉ cắt bỏ 'just' và 'probably' để chặt chẽ hơn.
    Band 7.5

Opens with the bare noun phrase 'The tap,' before the claim rather than a full subject-verb sentence.Mở đầu bằng cụm danh từ trần trụi 'The tap,' trước khi nêu luận điểm, thay vì một câu chủ ngữ - động từ đầy đủ.

The tap, and I'd defend it against every gadget in the house. My grandmother walked to a well twice a day for the first thirty years of her life; I turn a handle and clean water arrives, and that single change did more for health and time than anything else in the home. Running water and drainage ended most of the diseases that used to kill children, and freed hours a day, mostly women's hours. The refrigerator would be my second choice, since it changed what people could eat and how often they had to shop. Phones and televisions are what people would name if asked, and they're precisely the ones we'd survive without. Nobody, in the end, would give up the tap.

    • FCThe tap, and I'd defend it against every gadget in the house.Opening with the bare noun phrase 'The tap,' before the claim, rather than a full subject-verb sentence, is a more confident, essay-like opener than 6.5 and 7.0's fuller opening sentences.Mở đầu bằng cụm danh từ trần trụi 'The tap,' trước khi nêu luận điểm, thay vì một câu chủ ngữ - động từ đầy đủ, là cách mở đầu tự tin hơn, giống văn nghị luận hơn so với các câu mở đầu đầy đủ hơn ở band 6.5 và 7.0.
    • LRthey're precisely the ones we'd survive without'precisely' sharpens the claim into something more pointed and idiomatic than 6.5's plain 'but we could live without those' or 7.0's 'but they're the ones we'd survive without'.'precisely' làm luận điểm trở nên sắc bén và tự nhiên hơn so với cụm đơn giản 'but we could live without those' ở band 6.5 hay 'but they're the ones we'd survive without' ở band 7.0.
    • GRANobody, in the end, would give up the tap. This short final sentence, with 'in the end' inserted mid-clause, is a more flexible, deliberate closing device than the plainer, longer final sentences used at 6.5 and 7.0.Câu kết ngắn gọn này, với 'in the end' được chèn vào giữa mệnh đề, là một thủ pháp kết thúc linh hoạt, có chủ đích hơn so với các câu kết dài hơn, đơn giản hơn được dùng ở band 6.5 và 7.0.

    Band 6.5

Introduces the list plainly with a colon and two short 'like' examples.

I asked my parents, and their answer was more sensible than any advertisement - not robots, but a bathroom that notices if someone falls, and a house that stays cool without a big electricity bill. I think this is where real demand will be: equipment for getting older at home, like monitoring and help with stairs, and equipment for energy, like solar panels and batteries. People will also want appliances that repair themselves or tell you what is wrong, and kitchens that reduce waste. Some people will want a home robot, but most people just want the house to need less from them.

    • FCI asked my parents, and their answer was more sensible than any advertisementThis full sentence, joined plainly with 'and', is repeated almost unchanged across all three bands, showing it already works well even at 6.5; the real differences at 7.0 and 7.5 show up in how the following list is built and punctuated, not in this opening line.Câu đầy đủ này, nối đơn giản bằng 'and', được lặp lại gần như y nguyên ở cả ba band, cho thấy nó đã hoạt động tốt ngay từ band 6.5; sự khác biệt thực sự ở band 7.0 và 7.5 nằm ở cách danh sách tiếp theo được xây dựng và chấm câu, chứ không phải ở câu mở đầu này.
    • LRgetting older at home'getting older at home' is plain, everyday phrasing; 7.0 upgrades this to the more precise 'ageing at home', a slightly more formal collocation that 7.5 keeps unchanged, extending it instead with a fuller supporting list.'getting older at home' là cách diễn đạt đơn giản, thường ngày; band 7.0 nâng cấp thành 'ageing at home' chính xác hơn, một cách kết hợp từ trang trọng hơn một chút mà band 7.5 giữ nguyên, thay vào đó mở rộng bằng một danh sách bổ trợ đầy đủ hơn.
    • GRAI think this is where real demand will be: equipment for getting older at home, like monitoring and help with stairs, and equipment for energy, like solar panels and batteries. This colon-introduced list with two 'like' examples is fairly plain in structure; 7.0 extends the same list with a third item in each category, and 7.5 restructures the opening with a dash, 'That's where I think real demand will be -', for a slightly more flexible rhythm.Danh sách được dẫn bằng dấu hai chấm với hai ví dụ 'like' này có cấu trúc khá đơn giản; band 7.0 mở rộng cùng danh sách đó bằng cách thêm mục thứ ba vào mỗi nhóm, còn band 7.5 tổ chức lại phần mở đầu bằng dấu gạch ngang, 'That's where I think real demand will be -', tạo nhịp điệu linh hoạt hơn một chút.
    Band 7.0

Frames the claim with the cleft-like 'I think that's where the real demand will be' rather than 6.5's plainer version.Đóng khung luận điểm bằng cấu trúc gần giống câu chẻ 'I think that's where the real demand will be' thay vì phiên bản đơn giản hơn ở band 6.5.

I asked my parents, and their answer was more sensible than any advertisement - not robots, but a bathroom that notices a fall, and a house that stays cool without electricity bills they can't afford. I think that's where the real demand will be: equipment for ageing at home, like monitoring, help with stairs, and medicine that manages itself, plus equipment for energy, like solar panels, batteries, and cooling that doesn't rely on a power plant. Beyond that, people will want appliances that repair themselves or explain what's wrong, and kitchens designed to reduce waste. Some will want a domestic robot, but most people just want the house to ask less of them, not to entertain them more.

    • FCI think that's where the real demand will beThe cleft-like structure 'that's where the real demand will be' is a more considered, reflective framing than 6.5's plainer 'I think this is where real demand will be'; 7.5 restructures this further into a dash-led sentence, 'That's where I think real demand will be -', moving the hedge mid-clause.Cấu trúc gần giống câu chẻ 'that's where the real demand will be' mang tính khung diễn đạt cân nhắc, suy ngẫm hơn so với câu đơn giản hơn 'I think this is where real demand will be' ở band 6.5; band 7.5 tổ chức lại thêm thành một câu dẫn bằng dấu gạch ngang, 'That's where I think real demand will be -', chuyển từ đệm vào giữa mệnh đề.
    • LRmedicine that manages itselfThis is a precise, slightly technical image; 7.5 keeps the phrase almost identical, showing 7.0 had already found the right register here, with 7.5 mainly extending the surrounding list further.Đây là một hình ảnh chính xác, hơi mang tính kỹ thuật; band 7.5 giữ gần như nguyên cụm từ này, cho thấy band 7.0 đã tìm được đúng văn phong ở chỗ này, còn band 7.5 chủ yếu mở rộng thêm danh sách xung quanh.

    Vì sao đạt band này

    • FCThat's where I think real demand will bePlacing 'I think' inside the clause rather than at the sentence start, as in 6.5 and 7.0, is a more fluent, native-like way of embedding a hedge without breaking the sentence's momentum.Đặt 'I think' vào bên trong mệnh đề thay vì ở đầu câu như band 6.5 và 7.0 là cách lồng ghép từ đệm trôi chảy hơn, tự nhiên như người bản ngữ hơn, mà không làm gián đoạn đà của câu.
    • LRwater systems that recycleAdding this extra, more specific example - not present at 6.5 or 7.0 - shows a wider and more precise range of vocabulary drawn from the same semantic field of home sustainability.
