Band 6.5

The answer gives one plain, direct reason for enjoying the evening ('everything was simple and cheap, but we were completely relaxed') and closes with a simple general statement about friendship, a clear but modest structure typical of Band 6.5.Câu trả lời đưa ra một lý do đơn giản, trực tiếp cho việc thích buổi tối đó ('mọi thứ đơn giản và rẻ tiền, nhưng chúng tôi hoàn toàn thoải mái') và kết bằng một câu khái quát đơn giản về tình bạn, cấu trúc rõ ràng nhưng khiêm tốn, đặc trưng của Band 6.5.

An evening I really enjoyed with my friends was about three months ago, on a warm evening at Han Market in Da Nang.

It was a Saturday, after I finished work early, and I met my friend Phuong near the market around six in the evening. We walked around the food stalls outside the market, looking for something to eat.

We spent the whole evening together, just the two of us, eating banh xeo and drinking sugarcane juice from a small stall. After that, we walked along the river towards Dragon Bridge to watch it light up and breathe fire, which happens on weekend nights. We sat on the steps near the river for almost an hour, watching the water and talking about our jobs and our families back home.

I think it was such an enjoyable evening because everything was simple and cheap, but we were completely relaxed. There was no plan, we just walked and ate and talked whenever we felt like it. The bridge lighting up in front of us made the evening feel a bit special, even though we did not go anywhere fancy. I left feeling refreshed, and it reminded me how much I enjoy spending time with old friends without needing anything expensive to have a good time.

  • FCI think it was such an enjoyable evening because everything was simple and cheap, but we were completely relaxed. The reason for enjoying the evening is delivered with one because-clause, giving a single clear justification rather than multiple layered reasons or a reflective elaboration on what "relaxed" meant to the speaker. This is sufficient development for 6.5 coherence, a direct answer to the "why" prompt, though a 7.0 speaker would likely follow it with a specific example of what made it feel relaxed. The plain contrast between "simple and cheap" and "completely relaxed" also captures the whole argument of the paragraph in one sentence.Lý do vì sao thích buổi tối đó được truyền tải bằng một mệnh đề because duy nhất, đưa ra một lời biện minh rõ ràng, đơn lẻ thay vì nhiều lý do chồng lớp hay một sự triển khai mang tính suy ngẫm về ý nghĩa của 'relaxed' đối với người nói.
  • GRAThere was no plan, we just walked and ate and talked whenever we felt like it.Three verbs are strung together with "and" under one shared subject, a coordination-only structure with no subordinate clause at all, which keeps the sentence at the basic end of what 6.5 grammar requires. It's accurate and mirrors the aimless, unplanned nature of the evening being described, since the loose string of verbs echoes the loose structure of the night itself. A 7.0 answer might instead subordinate one of the actions, for example "since there was no real plan, we just...."Ba động từ được xâu chuỗi lại bằng 'and' dưới cùng một chủ ngữ chung, một cấu trúc chỉ có song song mà hoàn toàn không có mệnh đề phụ thuộc nào, giữ cho câu văn ở mức cơ bản trong yêu cầu ngữ pháp của band 6.5.
  • LRwithout needing anything expensive to have a good timeThis stays with plain, concrete vocabulary — "expensive," "good time" — rather than reaching for a more idiomatic phrase like "without breaking the bank," which a higher band might use in the same spot. It's clear and gets the point across accurately, closing the answer on the same simple, unpretentious note that runs through the whole story about Han Market and Dragon Bridge. The plainness here is consistent rather than an isolated dip, which is part of why the whole answer reads as 6.5.Đoạn này giữ nguyên vốn từ đơn giản, cụ thể — 'expensive,' 'good time' — thay vì vươn tới một cụm từ mang tính thành ngữ hơn kiểu 'without breaking the bank,' mà một bài band cao hơn có thể dùng ở cùng vị trí đó.
Band 7.0

The answer develops the evening with one specific concrete detail — Huy giving deliberately useless clues to 'wind me up' — and closes with a reflective generalisation about simple evenings mattering more, giving fuller development than the 6.5 answer while staying less textured than the 7.5 version.Câu trả lời phát triển buổi tối đó bằng một chi tiết cụ thể — Huy cố tình đưa ra gợi ý vô dụng để 'chọc' tác giả — và kết bằng một khái quát mang tính suy ngẫm rằng những buổi tối đơn giản lại có ý nghĩa hơn, mang lại sự phát triển đầy đủ hơn bài Band 6.5, dù chưa nhiều chất liệu bằng bài Band 7.5.

An evening that's really stuck with me was about two months back, a Friday straight after work. My friend Huy and I ended up at a small board game café on Nguyen Chi Thanh street, roughly a ten-minute ride from where I live near the Han River. There wasn't much planning involved — we'd both had a rough week and neither of us was in the mood for a loud bar or a packed cinema.

It was really just the two of us, though the café was buzzing with other tables of people. The atmosphere was warm and a bit dim, with the smell of coffee filling the whole room. We picked a spot by the window and each got an iced milk coffee. First we played Uno, which turned unexpectedly fierce, and then switched to Codenames, a word-guessing game that needs actual teamwork. We spent a lot of the evening laughing, particularly whenever Huy deliberately gave the most useless clue possible just to wind me up. Somewhere along the way the conversation moved from ridiculous client requests at work to stories from growing up in Hue.

What made the evening so good, honestly, was that balance between winding down and genuinely talking to someone. Leaving my phone in my bag and just paying attention to the games and the conversation felt surprisingly good. Nothing about the place tried too hard, and I walked out feeling both relaxed and ready for the weekend ahead. Evenings like that — cheap coffee, a good friend, nowhere to be — often turn out to matter more than the expensive ones.

  • LRdeliberately gave the most useless clue possible just to wind me upThe informal collocation 'wind me up' is a natural, everyday idiom used appropriately in spoken narrative, fitting the Band 7.0 target of a few more flexible expressions.Cách kết hợp từ không trang trọng 'wind me up' (chọc tức tôi) là một thành ngữ tự nhiên, thông dụng, được dùng phù hợp trong lời kể miệng, phù hợp với mục tiêu của Band 7.0 là có thêm vài cách diễn đạt linh hoạt hơn.
  • FCWhat made the evening so good, honestly, was that balance between winding down and genuinely talking to someone. The spoken hedge "honestly" introduces a moment where the speaker steps back from simply narrating the evening (the café, the games, the laughter) to analyse what specifically made it enjoyable, a natural, connected piece of development beyond plain narration, matching 7.0 fluency. A Band 6.5 answer would more likely just state that the evening was fun without identifying the underlying reason. The abstract phrase "that balance between winding down and genuinely talking to someone" also pulls together two separate strands of the story (relaxing with games, connecting through conversation) into a single, considered explanation.Từ đệm khẩu ngữ "honestly" mở ra một khoảnh khắc khi người nói lùi lại khỏi việc chỉ thuật lại buổi tối (quán cà phê, các trò chơi, tiếng cười) để phân tích điều gì cụ thể đã khiến nó thú vị — một bước phát triển tự nhiên, có liên kết vượt ra ngoài lời kể đơn thuần, phù hợp với mức lưu loát band 7.0.
  • GRAEvenings like that — cheap coffee, a good friend, nowhere to be — often turn out to matter more than the expensive ones. The dash-set list interrupts the main clause before it resolves, showing a more varied sentence structure than a simple statement, typical of Band 7.0 grammar.
Band 7.5

The answer closes with a generalised, reflective claim — that evenings with 'zero pressure to impress anyone' are the ones that really stand out — rather than simply restating that the evening was fun, a developed evaluative move typical of Band 7.5.Câu trả lời kết thúc bằng một khẳng định khái quát, mang tính suy ngẫm — rằng những buổi tối 'không có chút áp lực nào phải gây ấn tượng với ai' mới thực sự đáng nhớ — thay vì chỉ lặp lại rằng buổi tối đó vui, một cách chuyển ý mang tính đánh giá được phát triển đầy đủ, đặc trưng của Band 7.5.

One enjoyable evening that stands out for me happened about two months ago, on a Friday after work. My friend Huy and I decided to unwind at a small board game café on Nguyen Chi Thanh street, which is about a ten-minute ride from my apartment near the Han River. Honestly, it was pretty spontaneous-we'd both had a stressful week, and neither of us felt like heading to a noisy bar or a packed cinema.

It was just Huy and me that evening, but the place was lively with other groups. The café itself was cozy, with low lighting and the smell of fresh coffee in the air. We grabbed a table by the window and ordered two cà phê sữa đá. We started off with a card game called Uno, which somehow turned pretty competitive, and then moved on to Codenames, which is more about teamwork and wordplay. There was a lot of laughter-especially when Huy tried to give the vaguest clues possible just to mess with me. We ended up chatting about everything from weird design requests at work to childhood memories back in Hue.

The reason I found this evening so enjoyable was the balance of relaxing and actually connecting. It felt good to put my phone away and just focus on the games and conversation. The setting felt comfortable and unpretentious, and I left feeling both refreshed and in a better mood for the weekend. Sometimes, it's these simple evenings with a close friend, good coffee, and zero pressure to impress anyone that really stand out.

  • FCSometimes, it's these simple evenings with a close friend, good coffee, and zero pressure to impress anyone that really stand out. This closing sentence uses a cleft-like structure ("it's these simple evenings... that really stand out") to generalise from the one specific Friday evening described to a wider claim about what the speaker values in friendship, the kind of reflective development the 7.5 descriptor asks for rather than a plain summary of the night's events. A Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would more likely end by simply restating that the evening was enjoyable.
  • GRAwe'd both had a stressful week, and neither of us felt like heading to a noisy bar or a packed cinemaThe sentence balances two coordinated clauses with parallel structure ('a noisy bar or a packed cinema'), showing the controlled, varied grammar of Band 7.5.Câu này cân bằng hai mệnh đề song song với cấu trúc đối xứng ('a noisy bar or a packed cinema' - một quán bar ồn ào hay một rạp chiếu phim đông đúc), cho thấy ngữ pháp kiểm soát tốt, đa dạng của Band 7.5.

The 6.5 answer gives a direct opinion with a simple list of examples and one plain reason, linked mainly with 'and' and 'because'.Câu trả lời band 6.5 đưa ra quan điểm trực tiếp bằng một danh sách ví dụ đơn giản và một lý do đơn giản, chủ yếu liên kết bằng 'and' và 'because'.

People do many things with friends in the evening. Eating out is very popular, and coffee shops are popular too, because people like to sit and talk. Young people often go to karaoke after a busy week. But my friends and I usually just walk along the river after dinner. We do this because it is free and the view near the bridges is nice. So for us, this is the best way to relax together.

    • FCSo for us, this is the best way to relax together. The answer closes with a short, plain summary sentence using the simple connector 'So'. A 7.0 or 7.5 answer would round off with a more reflective or evaluative remark instead of a flat restatement.Câu trả lời kết thúc bằng một câu tóm tắt ngắn, đơn giản dùng liên từ đơn giản 'So'.
    • LRvery popularThis is a very common, general adjective-noun pairing with no attempt at a more precise or less common word choice. A higher band would reach for a more specific collocation like 'a firm favourite' or 'the go-to option'.Đây là một cách kết hợp tính từ-danh từ rất phổ biến, chung chung, không có nỗ lực chọn từ chính xác hơn hoặc ít thông dụng hơn. Một band cao hơn sẽ chọn cách kết hợp cụ thể hơn như 'a firm favourite' hoặc 'the go-to option'.
    • GRAWe do this because it is freeThis is a short main clause plus a simple 'because' clause, the most basic way to give a reason. A 7.0 or 7.5 answer would likely embed this reasoning inside a longer sentence with a participle or linking clause.Đây là một mệnh đề chính ngắn cộng với một mệnh đề 'because' đơn giản, cách cơ bản nhất để đưa ra lý do.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer opens with the natural hedge 'Honestly, it depends a lot on the group' and uses a comparative clause ('more about having a comfortable spot than about the coffee itself') to add a little reflection beyond a flat list.Câu trả lời band 7.0 mở đầu bằng cách rào đón tự nhiên 'Honestly, it depends a lot on the group' và dùng mệnh đề so sánh ('more about having a comfortable spot than about the coffee itself') để thêm một chút suy ngẫm ngoài việc chỉ liệt kê đơn thuần.

Honestly, it depends a lot on the group, but eating out is probably the most common choice, since grabbing food at a street-side place gives people hours to just talk. Coffee shops are popular too, especially in the evening, when they become more about having a comfortable spot than about the coffee itself. Karaoke is still a classic among younger people, particularly after exams. To be fair, though, my friends and I usually prefer something quieter, like walking along the river after dinner, mainly because it costs nothing and the view near the bridges is genuinely lovely in the evening.

    • FCHonestly, it depends a lot on the group, butThis spoken hedge softens the opinion before it's given, which sounds more natural than a flat statement. A 6.5 answer would likely skip this and state the opinion directly, while a 7.5 answer might compress the hedge into fewer words.Cách rào đón mang tính khẩu ngữ này làm dịu quan điểm trước khi nêu ra, nghe tự nhiên hơn một câu khẳng định thẳng thừng.
    • LRgenuinely lovelyThis is a mildly upgraded collocation compared to a plain word like 'nice', showing some control of natural-sounding intensifiers.
    • GRAwhen they become more about having a comfortable spot than about the coffee itselfThis is a moderately complex comparative clause built around 'more about X than about Y', going beyond simple coordination. A 6.5 answer would likely split this into two short separate sentences.Đây là một mệnh đề so sánh có độ phức tạp vừa phải, được xây dựng quanh cấu trúc 'more about X than about Y', vượt ra ngoài sự sắp xếp song song đơn giản.
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer opens with a fronted participial phrase ('Costing absolutely nothing and offering a genuinely picturesque view... it has become') and closes with the evaluative touch 'one of the more underrated ways to unwind', giving it a more compact, idiomatic finish.Câu trả lời band 7.5 mở đầu bằng một cụm phân từ đảo lên trước ('Costing absolutely nothing and offering a genuinely picturesque view... it has become') và kết thúc bằng nét đánh giá 'one of the more underrated ways to unwind', tạo nên một kết thúc súc tích, tự nhiên hơn.

Eating out is probably the go-to option, with people grabbing something like bun bo or grilled meat at a street-side stall and lingering over it for hours. Coffee shops draw a similarly loyal crowd, particularly once evening falls and the appeal shifts from caffeine to simply having a relaxed spot to unwind. Among younger crowds, karaoke rooms remain something of an institution, especially after a gruelling exam period. My own friends and I, however, tend to gravitate toward something far quieter: strolling along the riverside after dinner. Costing absolutely nothing and offering a genuinely picturesque view near the bridges, it has become something of an unspoken ritual for us, and honestly one of the more underrated ways to unwind.

    • FCMy own friends and I, however, tend to gravitate toward something far quieter: strolling along the riverside after dinner. The fronted 'however' and the colon leading into a compressed noun phrase create a more flexible, essay-like flow than a plain sentence would. A 6.5 answer would simply say 'But my friends and I walk along the river', with none of this compactness.'However' được đưa lên trước cùng với dấu hai chấm dẫn vào một cụm danh từ súc tích tạo nên nhịp văn linh hoạt hơn, mang tính luận văn hơn so với một câu đơn giản. Câu trả lời band 6.5 sẽ chỉ nói đơn giản 'But my friends and I walk along the river', không có sự súc tích này.
    • LRsomething of an institutionThis is a genuinely less common, slightly idiomatic collocation for describing a well-established habit, well beyond a plain word like 'popular' or 'common'.
    • GRACosting absolutely nothing and offering a genuinely picturesque view near the bridges, it has become something of an unspoken ritual for usThis uses a fronted participial phrase ('Costing... and offering...') to compress two reasons into one flowing clause before the main subject appears. A 6.5 answer would instead use two separate simple sentences joined with 'because' and 'and'.Cách này dùng một cụm phân từ đảo lên trước ('Costing... and offering...') No, I don't think so. Young people like new and expensive activities, such as escape rooms or board game cafes, because they see them on social media. Older people prefer simple and regular activities. For example, my parents in Hue have tea with the same neighbours every evening. But both groups still like eating together with friends. So the activities are different, but the reason is the same: people want company.

    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer softens its opinion with 'I'd say' and adds a reflective closing remark about novelty-seeking rather than just listing examples, showing a bit more analysis than a flat comparison.Câu trả lời band 7.0 làm dịu quan điểm bằng 'I'd say' và thêm một nhận xét mang tính suy ngẫm ở phần kết về việc theo đuổi sự mới lạ, thay vì chỉ liệt kê ví dụ, thể hiện chút phân tích sâu hơn một sự so sánh đơn thuần.

Not really, no, I'd say. Young people tend to go for newer and often pricier activities, like board game cafes or escape rooms, partly because social media keeps exposing them to new trends. Older people, though, from what I've noticed with my parents' generation in Hue, prefer simpler routines that repeat, such as having tea with the same group of neighbours every evening. That said, there's still some overlap, since both groups clearly value a shared meal. To be fair, I think the real difference is just how much novelty people are chasing, not the underlying purpose.

A 6.5 answer typically states the position bluntly instead.Cách mở đầu được làm dịu bằng 'I'd say' này nghe tự nhiên hơn tiếng Anh khẩu ngữ so với câu nói thẳng thừng 'No, I don't think so'.
    • LRkeeps exposing them to new trendsThis is a moderately natural collocation using 'expose' rather than the plainer 'show' or 'see', showing slightly wider vocabulary range. A 6.5 answer would more likely just say 'because they see them on social media'.Đây là một cách kết hợp từ khá tự nhiên, dùng 'expose' thay vì 'show' hay 'see' đơn giản hơn, thể hiện vốn từ vựng rộng hơn một chút. Câu trả lời band 6.5 nhiều khả năng chỉ nói 'because they see them on social media'.
    • GRAfrom what I've noticed with my parents' generation in Hue, prefer simpler routines that repeatThis embeds an inserted comment clause ('from what I've noticed...') in the middle of the sentence before the main verb, which is more complex than a plain subject-verb-object structure. A 6.5 answer would keep the example in its own separate sentence.Cách này lồng một mệnh đề nhận xét chèn vào ('from what I've noticed...')
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer uses a compressed appositive ('my parents' crowd in Hue being a good example') instead of a full clause, and closes with the evaluative, slightly idiomatic 'ultimately just after company and conversation'.Câu trả lời band 7.5 dùng một cấu trúc đồng vị rút gọn ('my parents' crowd in Hue being a good example') thay cho một mệnh đề đầy đủ, và kết thúc bằng cụm từ mang tính đánh giá, hơi thành ngữ 'ultimately just after company and conversation'.

Not entirely, no. Young people gravitate toward newer, often pricier pursuits, board game cafes, escape rooms, that sort of thing, largely because social media bombards them with trends constantly, making novelty itself feel like the whole point of a night out. Older generations, my parents' crowd in Hue being a good example, favour simpler, well-worn routines instead, like a nightly tea session with the very same neighbours, repeated almost ritually. There's overlap too, though: both groups still rate a shared meal above almost anything else. If anything, I'd say the gap comes down to novelty-seeking rather than any real difference in purpose, since everyone, young or old, is ultimately just after company and conversation.

I think it depends on the person's age. When people are young, like in their twenties, they usually spend more time with friends because it feels like their own choice. For example, when I first moved from Hue for university, I chose friends over family evenings. But later in life, when people have children or their parents get older, they spend more time with family again. So it changes, and I don't think one is always preferred.

Honestly, I think it depends heavily on the stage of life someone's in. In their teens and twenties, friends usually come first, partly because those friendships feel more like a choice than family does. I certainly prioritised friends over family evenings myself when I first moved away from Hue for university. That balance tends to shift back toward family later on, though, especially once people have children or start watching their parents age. Doing an activity together helps too, whether it's a family trip or cooking a dish together, since it gives people something to bond over besides talking.

    • FCI'd say it's quite important, though maybe less central than it used to be.The hedge 'I'd say' combined with 'though' gives a softer, more considered opening than a flat statement. A 6.5 answer would more likely just say 'I think it is quite important, but maybe less important than before' with plainer wording.Cách rào đón 'I'd say' kết hợp với 'though' mang lại một mở đầu nhẹ nhàng, cân nhắc hơn so với một câu khẳng định thẳng thừng. Câu trả lời band 6.5 nhiều khả năng chỉ nói 'I think it is quite important, but maybe less important than before' với từ ngữ đơn giản hơn.
    • LRa different kind of support than parents alone can offerThis is a moderately natural collocation ('a different kind of support') that adds nuance beyond the plain phrase 'a wider sense of belonging' alone. A 6.5 answer would stop at the simpler idea without this added comparison.Đây là một cách kết hợp từ khá tự nhiên ('a different kind of support'), thêm sắc thái ngoài cụm từ đơn giản 'a wider sense of belonging'. Câu trả lời band 6.5 sẽ dừng lại ở ý đơn giản hơn mà không có sự so sánh thêm này.
    • GRAa lot of what I know about our family's history came from her stories rather than anything my parents told me directlyThis uses a 'rather than' comparative structure inside one longer sentence, which is more complex than a simple 'not from' contrast. A 6.5 answer would likely split this into two shorter clauses joined by 'not'.Cách này dùng cấu trúc so sánh 'rather than' trong một câu dài hơn, phức tạp hơn sự đối lập 'not from' đơn giản.
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer uses the vivid, less common verb phrase 'chips away at' and closes with the evaluative collocation 'a poor substitute', giving the answer a more precise, idiomatic finish.Câu trả lời band 7.5 dùng cụm động từ sống động, ít thông dụng 'chips away at' và kết thúc bằng cách kết hợp mang tính đánh giá 'a poor substitute', tạo nên một kết thúc chính xác, tự nhiên hơn.

It's fairly important, I'd say, though arguably less central than it once was. Extended family, grandparents, aunts, uncles, offers a wider sense of belonging and a different kind of support than parents alone can provide. My grandmother still lives with my parents in Hue, and honestly, much of what I know about our family's history came from her stories rather than anything passed down directly from my parents. That said, modern life, moving cities for work, in my case, inevitably chips away at how often this happens. Video calls go some way toward bridging the gap, but they're a poor substitute for actually being present at a family gathering.

    • FCmodern life, moving cities for work, in my case, inevitably chips away at how often this happensThe inserted phrase 'in my case' interrupts the sentence in a natural, conversational way, mid-clause, before the main verb arrives. A 6.5 answer would keep the example in a separate, plainer clause with 'like moving cities for work'.Cụm từ chèn vào 'in my case' ngắt câu một cách tự nhiên, mang tính hội thoại, ở giữa mệnh đề, trước khi động từ chính xuất hiện. Câu trả lời band 6.5 sẽ giữ ví dụ này trong một mệnh đề riêng biệt, đơn giản hơn bằng 'like moving cities for work'.
    • LRchips away at how often this happensThis is a vivid, genuinely less common idiom for describing a gradual reduction, more precise than the plain verb 'makes... less'. A 6.5 answer would simply say 'makes this happen less often now'.Đây là một thành ngữ sống động, thực sự ít thông dụng để miêu tả sự suy giảm dần dần, chính xác hơn động từ đơn giản 'makes... less'. Câu trả lời band 6.5 sẽ chỉ nói đơn giản 'makes this happen less often now'.

It has reduced the time a lot, mainly because of work and because families now live in different places. My family is a good example: my sister studies in Ho Chi Minh City, I live in Da Nang, and my parents are in Hue, so we only really meet in person a few times a year, usually at Tet. Long working hours also take up evening time, even for families in the same city. Technology helps a bit, with quick messages on Zalo, but it is not the same as eating together.

    • FCIt has reduced the time a lot, mainly because of work and because families now live in different places. This gives two reasons joined plainly with 'and because', repeating the same connector rather than varying the sentence structure. A 7.0 or 7.5 answer would likely combine these ideas using a single more compact phrase like 'work pressure and how spread out families have become'.Cách này đưa ra hai lý do, nối đơn giản bằng 'and because', lặp lại cùng một liên từ thay vì thay đổi cấu trúc câu. Câu trả lời band 7.0 hay 7.5 nhiều khả năng sẽ gộp các ý này bằng một cụm từ súc tích hơn như 'work pressure and how spread out families have become'.
    • LRTechnology helps a bitThis is a very plain, vague phrase for describing technology's role. A higher band would likely replace this with a more specific collocation such as 'technology has partly compensated'.Đây là một cụm từ rất đơn giản, mơ hồ để miêu tả vai trò của công nghệ.
    • GRAmy sister studies in Ho Chi Minh City, I live in Da Nang, and my parents are in HueThis is a simple list of three short clauses joined only with commas and 'and'. A 7.0 or 7.5 answer might instead frame this list as an appositive example attached to the sentence before it.Đây là một danh sách đơn giản gồm ba mệnh đề ngắn, chỉ nối bằng dấu phẩy và 'and'.
    Band 7.0

It's reduced it quite noticeably, I think, mainly because of work pressure and how spread out families have become geographically. My own family is a good example, my sister's studying in Ho Chi Minh City, I'm in Da Nang, and our parents are in Hue, so a proper in-person gathering only happens a few times a year now, usually at Tet. Long commutes and demanding jobs eat into weekday evenings too, even for people living in the same city as their parents. Technology has partly compensated, with quick voice messages on Zalo replacing some of that daily contact, though it's honestly a thinner substitute than actually sharing a meal.

A 6.5 answer would more likely state each cause in its own short clause.Gộp hai nguyên nhân vào một cụm từ ('work pressure and how spread out families have become geographically') nghe trôi chảy hơn việc lặp lại 'because' hai lần.
    • LReat into weekday eveningsThis is a moderately natural collocation using 'eat into' rather than the plainer phrase 'take up time'. A 6.5 answer would more likely say 'also take up time in the evening'.Đây là một cách kết hợp từ khá tự nhiên, dùng 'eat into' thay vì cụm từ đơn giản hơn 'take up time'. Câu trả lời band 6.5 nhiều khả năng sẽ nói 'also take up time in the evening'.
    • GRAthough it's honestly a thinner substitute than actually sharing a mealThis comparative clause ('a thinner substitute than...') adds a layer of evaluation onto the main statement, making the sentence longer and more complex. A 6.5 answer would likely end with a simpler contrast like 'but it is not the same as eating together'.Mệnh đề so sánh này ('a thinner substitute than...') thêm một lớp đánh giá vào câu khẳng định chính, khiến câu dài và phức tạp hơn. Câu trả lời band 6.5 nhiều khả năng sẽ kết thúc bằng một sự đối lập đơn giản hơn như 'but it is not the same as eating together'.
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer opens with the compact, idiomatic 'cut it down quite noticeably' and uses a fronted, verbless participial phrase ('quick voice messages on Zalo standing in for...') instead of a full clause, giving the sentence a more flexible, essay-like shape.Câu trả lời band 7.5 mở đầu bằng cách nói súc tích, tự nhiên 'cut it down quite noticeably' và dùng một cụm phân từ đảo lên trước, không có động từ chia ('quick voice messages on Zalo standing in for...') thay cho một mệnh đề đầy đủ, tạo cho câu hình dáng linh hoạt hơn, mang tính luận văn hơn.

It's cut it down quite noticeably, I'd say, largely down to work pressure and how spread out families have become geographically. My own family sums it up rather well, my sister's studying in Ho Chi Minh City, I'm in Da Nang, and our parents are still in Hue, so an actual in-person gathering only happens a handful of times a year now, usually at Tet. Long commutes and demanding jobs eat into weekday evenings too, even among people living in the same city as their parents. I think technology brings people together more, but it depends how you use it. For my family, we live in three different cities, so video calls and Zalo groups help us stay close every day.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer softens its claim with 'I lean toward saying' and adds the natural spoken tag 'I'd say' mid-sentence, plus a moderately complex 'whether X or Y' clause at the close.Câu trả lời band 7.0 làm dịu nhận định bằng 'I lean toward saying' và thêm cụm từ khẩu ngữ tự nhiên 'I'd say' vào giữa câu, cộng thêm một mệnh đề 'whether X or Y' có độ phức tạp vừa phải ở phần kết.

I lean toward saying it brings people together overall, though it really depends on how it's used. For my own family, scattered across three cities, video calls and Zalo groups genuinely keep us in each other's daily lives in a way that simply wasn't possible a generation ago. The downside shows up in smaller moments, though, friends sitting at the same table but each scrolling their own phone instead of talking, which I notice constantly at coffee shops here. So technology itself isn't really the problem, I'd say, it's more about whether people use it to maintain distant relationships or let it replace the ones right in front of them.

For my own family, scattered across three cities, video calls and Zalo groups genuinely keep us woven into each other's daily lives in a way that simply wasn't possible a generation ago. The downside surfaces in smaller, quieter moments, though: friends sitting at the same table, each scrolling their own phone instead of talking, something I notice constantly at coffee shops here. Yes, I think it is a good use of public money, at least to some extent. My city, Da Nang, has a big fireworks festival over the river every year, and it brings local people and tourists together. Families often have a picnic along the river before it starts. But I don't think this should cost more than important things like healthcare or education, so there needs to be a limit. Smaller events, like a weekend market, might actually be more useful than one big event each year.

To some extent, yes, I think it's a reasonable use of public money, especially for a city like mine that relies partly on its image and community spirit. Da Nang holds a big fireworks festival over the river most years, and it genuinely brings residents and tourists together in a way daily life doesn't, with families picnicking along the banks for hours beforehand. That said, this shouldn't come at the expense of more basic needs like healthcare or education, so there has to be a sensible limit on the budget. Smaller, regular community events, like a weekend market, might actually offer better value than one huge annual spectacle.

A 6.5 answer would more likely place the qualifier at the end of the sentence instead.Đưa điều kiện 'To some extent' lên trước nhận định chính mang lại cho câu một mở đầu tự nhiên, cân nhắc hơn so với câu khẳng định thẳng thừng 'Yes, I think'.
    • LRcome at the expense of more basic needsThis is a moderately natural collocation ('come at the expense of') for describing a trade-off, more precise than the plain phrase 'cost more than'. A 6.5 answer would use that simpler wording instead.Đây là một cách kết hợp từ khá tự nhiên ('come at the expense of') để miêu tả một sự đánh đổi, chính xác hơn cụm từ đơn giản 'cost more than'.
    • GRAit genuinely brings residents and tourists together in a way daily life doesn't, with families picnicking along the banks for hours beforehandThis sentence attaches a relative-style comparison ('in a way daily life doesn't') and a 'with' participial phrase onto the main clause, making it longer and more layered. A 6.5 answer would likely split this into two short separate sentences.Câu này gắn thêm một sự so sánh kiểu mệnh đề quan hệ ('in a way daily life doesn't') và một cụm phân từ 'with' vào mệnh đề chính, khiến câu dài và nhiều lớp hơn. Câu trả lời band 6.5 nhiều khả năng sẽ tách thành hai câu ngắn, riêng biệt.
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer uses the vivid collocation 'trades partly on its image' and closes with the compact, conversational aside 'a weekend market, say', giving the answer a more idiomatic, flexible finish.Câu trả lời band 7.5 dùng cách kết hợp từ sống động 'trades partly on its image' và kết thúc bằng lời chú thích súc tích, mang tính hội thoại 'a weekend market, say', tạo nên một kết thúc tự nhiên, linh hoạt hơn.

To some degree, yes, I'd call it a reasonable use of public money, particularly for a city like mine that trades partly on its image and sense of community. Da Nang puts on a sizeable fireworks festival over the river most years, and it genuinely draws residents and tourists together in a way ordinary daily life simply doesn't, with families picnicking along the banks for hours beforehand. That said, this shouldn't come at the expense of more fundamental needs like healthcare or education, so there has to be a sensible cap on the budget. Smaller, more frequent community events, a weekend market, say, might well offer better value than one enormous annual spectacle.

    • FCa weekend market, say, might well offer better valueThe inserted aside 'say' after the example is a natural, slightly idiomatic way of offering a suggestion mid-sentence. A 6.5 answer would instead attach the example plainly with 'like a weekend market' before the main clause.Từ chèn vào 'say' sau ví dụ là một cách tự nhiên, hơi mang tính thành ngữ để đưa ra một gợi ý ở giữa câu. Câu trả lời band 6.5 sẽ gắn ví dụ một cách đơn giản bằng 'like a weekend market' trước mệnh đề chính.
    • LRtrades partly on its image and sense of communityThe verb 'trades on' is a genuinely less common, precise collocation for describing how a city relies on its reputation.
    • GRAit genuinely draws residents and tourists together in a way ordinary daily life simply doesn'tThis sentence compresses a comparison into a relative-style clause without repeating the verb, rather than writing out a full second sentence. Yes, I think so, mainly because modern life pulls people apart. Families are smaller now, more people work from home, and there is less natural contact with neighbours than before. Without some effort, community connection does not really happen by itself anymore. In my apartment building near the river, some residents started a small group that does a weekend clean-up along the riverbank. It has really helped people know their neighbours' names. So I think small, regular activities like this work better than big events alone.

A 7.0 or 7.5 answer would more likely soften this with 'I'd say' and list several causes in one longer sentence.Đây là một nhận định mở đầu ngắn gọn, trực tiếp, gắn kèm một lý do đơn giản bằng 'because'.

The 7.0 answer lists three causes in one flowing sentence and adds the reflective aside 'to be fair' near the end, showing a bit more nuance than a single plain reason.Câu trả lời band 7.0 liệt kê ba nguyên nhân trong một câu trôi chảy và thêm lời chú thích mang tính suy ngẫm 'to be fair' gần cuối câu, thể hiện chút tinh tế hơn một lý do đơn giản duy nhất.

Yes, I'd say so, mainly because modern life naturally pulls people apart, smaller households, more people working from home or moving cities for jobs like I did, and less of that built-in neighbourly contact older generations had. Without some deliberate effort, community connection just doesn't happen on its own anymore. In my apartment building near the river, a few residents started a small group that organises the odd weekend clean-up along the riverbank, and it's surprising how much that's helped people actually know their neighbours' names. Encouraging that kind of low-effort, regular contact seems more realistic, to be fair, than expecting big events alone to rebuild a sense of community.

Left to its own devices, community connection simply doesn't happen anymore. In my apartment building near the river, a handful of residents started a small group organising the odd weekend clean-up along the riverbank, and it's remarkable how much that's helped people actually learn their neighbours' names. Most people, I'd say, like to keep things fairly relaxed when they spend an evening with friends. Last Friday after work, for instance, I met up with my colleague Phuong and a couple of friends at a small café along the Han River, where we had cà phê sữa đá and just chatted about work, travel plans, and new movies — soft lighting, the river audible just outside, the whole thing cosy and unhurried. Sometimes people go for street food instead, or wander around Dragon Bridge if the weather's kind, but honestly, the main thing is always just catching up and unwinding after a long week. That kind of casual evening, I'd guess, is fairly typical here.

I think there's a pretty clear difference between how younger and older people spend their evenings. For example, last month my neighbour Mr. Son, who's in his late sixties, invited a few of us to his regular evening chess group at a small coffee shop near the Tran Phu roundabout. It was a quiet gathering, with people chatting about neighbourhood news and sipping hot tea. In contrast, when I meet friends like Minh or Linh, we're more likely to grab street food or hang out near Dragon Bridge, people-watching and scrolling TikTok together. I suppose younger people look for variety and social buzz, while older people prefer routines and quieter places.

It really depends on the individual, I'd say, but from what I've seen, most young people lean toward friends once they reach university or start working. My younger sister, for instance, who's studying in Ho Chi Minh City, spends nearly every weekend exploring new coffee shops and night markets with her classmates, even though she still calls home like clockwork. That social energy seems pretty typical for her age group. Family gatherings still matter, of course — Tet especially, when everyone makes the effort to be together no matter where they've scattered to. But outside those occasions, friends tend to be the default choice, probably down to a mix of wanting independence and simply sharing more interests at this stage of life.

I think a lot of older people tend to prefer family, especially once they retire or their children have grown up. For example, my grandmother in Hue loves having everyone over for weekend dinners, and she starts preparing special dishes like bánh bèo early in the morning. You can see how happy she is when the house is noisy with relatives. That said, she also enjoys catching up with old friends from her neighbourhood, and they sometimes meet for morning walks by the Perfume River, which gives her a different kind of joy, with more laughter and gossip. So honestly, while family comes first for many older people, friends still matter for their independence and fun.

    • GRAeven just talking over dinner can make a real difference, as long as everyone's actually present and not glued to their phones. The added phrase 'and not glued to their phones' extends the closing condition with a second, more specific requirement, a cohesive elaboration the 6.5 answer's shorter version doesn't include.Cụm từ thêm vào 'and not glued to their phones' mở rộng điều kiện ở phần kết bằng một yêu cầu thứ hai, cụ thể hơn, một sự triển khai liên kết mà phiên bản ngắn hơn ở band 6.5 không có.
    Band 7.5

Closes with the comparative claim 'brought us closer than any planned outing could have', explicitly ranking the chaotic cooking night above a more organised alternative, which neither lower band does.Kết thúc bằng nhận định so sánh 'brought us closer than any planned outing could have', xếp hạng rõ ràng buổi tối nấu ăn hỗn loạn này cao hơn một lựa chọn thay thế có tổ chức hơn, điều mà cả hai band thấp hơn đều không làm.

One of the best ways for families to strengthen their relationships, I'd say, is setting aside regular time for activities together, not reserving it for special occasions alone. About two months ago, for instance, my parents, grandmother and I had a cooking night on a Sunday when I came home to Hue, choosing bánh bèo, a dish none of us had ever attempted — it got properly chaotic in the kitchen, my dad squinting at a YouTube video while my grandmother offered her own, quite different, tips. But honestly, that shared chaos and laughter brought us closer than any planned outing could have. It needn't be big or expensive; even just talking over dinner makes a real difference, as long as everyone's actually present rather than glued to a phone.

    • FCBut honestly, that shared chaos and laughter brought us closer than any planned outing could have. The explicit comparison 'than any planned outing could have' is a cohesive evaluative step beyond either lower band, which both simply state that the evening brought the family closer without ranking it against alternatives.Sự so sánh rõ ràng 'than any planned outing could have' là một bước đánh giá liên kết vượt xa cả hai band thấp hơn, vốn chỉ đơn giản nói rằng buổi tối đó khiến gia đình gần gũi hơn mà không xếp hạng nó so với các lựa chọn khác.
    • LRmy dad squinting at a YouTube video'Squinting' is a vivid, specific verb that neither lower band uses — both settle for the plainer 'trying to follow' or 'following' a YouTube video.'Squinting' là một động từ sống động, cụ thể mà cả hai band thấp hơn đều không dùng — cả hai đều chỉ dùng 'trying to follow' hoặc 'following' đơn giản hơn khi nói về việc xem video trên YouTube.
    • GRAIt needn't be big or expensive; even just talking over dinner makes a real difference, as long as everyone's actually present rather than glued to a phone. The semicolon joins two independent clauses without a connector, a more compact and formally tighter structure than the 6.5 answer's comma splice or the 7.0 answer's dash for the same closing idea.Dấu chấm phẩy nối hai mệnh đề độc lập mà không cần liên từ, một cấu trúc súc tích và chặt chẽ hơn về mặt ngữ pháp so với cách nối bằng dấu phẩy ở band 6.5 hoặc dấu gạch ngang ở band 7.0 cho cùng ý kết thúc.
  18. 18. How important is communication with family members?

    So sánh Band 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 cho câu hỏi này
    Band 6.5

States the phone-call anecdote in short, separate sentences ('She wanted to check in...') rather than fusing the reason for the call into the anecdote sentence itself.Trình bày câu chuyện về cuộc gọi điện thoại bằng những câu ngắn, riêng biệt ('She wanted to check in...') thay vì hòa quyện lý do gọi điện vào chính câu kể chuyện.

I'd say communication with family is really important, even if you don't live under the same roof. For me, it keeps our relationships strong and helps avoid misunderstandings, especially since my parents and grandmother are in Hue and my sister is in Ho Chi Minh City. For example, last week I got a call from my mom just as I was about to order dinner with friends at a new BBQ spot near the Han River. She wanted to check in and tell me about my grandmother's health. Even brief updates like that let us support each other emotionally, no matter how busy we get. Otherwise, it's easy to drift apart over time.

    • FCFor example, last week I got a call from my mom just as I was about to order dinner with friends at a new BBQ spot near the Han River. The plain connector 'For example' opens the anecdote directly. The 7.0 and 7.5 answers instead attach 'for instance' after the time marker, integrating the signpost into the sentence rather than starting fresh with it.Liên từ đơn giản 'For example' mở đầu câu chuyện một cách trực tiếp.
    • LROtherwise, it's easy to drift apart over time. This is a plain, direct closing sentence. The 7.5 answer replaces it with the more idiomatic 'staying in touch is what keeps you from quietly drifting apart', turning the same idea into a positive statement about what staying in touch achieves rather than a warning about what happens without it.Đây là một câu kết đơn giản, trực tiếp. Câu trả lời band 7.5 thay bằng cách nói tự nhiên hơn 'staying in touch is what keeps you from quietly drifting apart', biến cùng một ý thành một câu khẳng định tích cực về điều mà việc giữ liên lạc mang lại, thay vì một lời cảnh báo về điều gì sẽ xảy ra nếu không giữ liên lạc.
    • GRAShe wanted to check in and tell me about my grandmother's health.A short separate sentence states the reason for the call. The 7.0 and 7.5 answers instead fuse this reason directly onto the anecdote sentence with a dash, avoiding a new sentence for the same information.Một câu ngắn, riêng biệt nêu lý do gọi điện.
    Band 7.0

Fuses the phone-call anecdote and its reason into one sentence with a dash, rather than the 6.5 answer's two separate sentences for the same content.Dùng dấu gạch ngang để gộp câu chuyện về cuộc gọi điện thoại và lý do gọi vào cùng một câu, thay vì hai câu riêng biệt cho cùng nội dung như câu trả lời band 6.5.

Honestly, I'd say communication with family is genuinely crucial, even if you don't all live under the same roof. • FCOf course, everyone's situation is different, but for most people I know, staying in touch really matters. This closing concession, added after the main point, is a cohesive step beyond the 6.5 answer, which ends on the general claim about brief updates without acknowledging that situations vary.Sự nhượng bộ được thêm vào ở phần kết này, sau luận điểm chính, là một bước liên kết vượt xa câu trả lời band 6.5, vốn kết thúc ở nhận định chung về những lần cập nhật ngắn mà không thừa nhận rằng hoàn cảnh mỗi người mỗi khác.
    • LRcommunication with family is genuinely crucialThe adverb 'genuinely' adds conviction that the plainer 6.5 phrase 'really important' lacks on its own.

    • FCEveryone's situation differs, of course, but for most people I know, staying in touch is what keeps you from quietly drifting apart.Placing 'of course' mid-sentence rather than at the start is a more flexible ordering than the 7.0 answer's 'Of course, everyone's situation is different' opener, and the final clause reframes drifting apart as something staying in touch actively prevents.Đặt 'of course' ở giữa câu thay vì ở đầu câu là một trật tự linh hoạt hơn so với cách mở đầu 'Of course, everyone's situation is different' ở band 7.0, và mệnh đề cuối cùng tái diễn đạt sự xa cách như một điều mà việc giữ liên lạc chủ động ngăn chặn được.
