An Ambition You Haven't Achieved Yet

Gần nhất ra thi tháng 5–8/2026

Đề bài (cue card)

Describe an ambition you haven't achieved yet

You should say:

  • what your ambition is
  • why you want to achieve this ambition
  • how long you have had this ambition
  • and explain why you haven't achieved this ambition yet

Band 6.5

The answer names one plain emotional cause ('mostly nerves, honestly') for not achieving the goal and closes with a simple future promise ('next summer I'll finally finish a full course of lessons'), a modest, direct structure typical of Band 6.5.Câu trả lời nêu một nguyên nhân cảm xúc đơn giản ('chủ yếu là do lo lắng, thành thật mà nói') cho việc chưa đạt được mục tiêu, và kết bằng một lời hứa đơn giản cho tương lai ('mùa hè tới tôi sẽ hoàn thành trọn vẹn một khóa học'), một cấu trúc khiêm tốn, trực tiếp, đặc trưng của Band 6.5.

The ambition I haven't achieved yet is to learn to swim properly, not just splash around near the shore.

I grew up in Hue, away from the sea, so nobody in my family really swims. Even though I live right next to My Khe Beach now, I only ever go in up to my waist. I want to be able to swim out further and actually enjoy the water instead of being a little afraid of it.

I've had this ambition for about two years, since I moved to Da Nang and started walking along the beach every weekend. Watching other people swim out confidently made me want to try, but I never quite got past a couple of basic lessons.

The reason I haven't achieved it yet is mostly nerves, honestly. I booked a few lessons with an instructor near the beach, but I kept cancelling because I felt embarrassed being a beginner as an adult. I still think about it whenever I walk past the water, and I've told myself that next summer I'll finally finish a full course of lessons.

  • FCThe reason I haven't achieved it yet is mostly nerves, honestly. The formulaic frame "The reason... is..." states the cause in the most direct possible way, with "honestly" added as a simple spoken hedge rather than any deeper self-reflection -- this unembellished directness, naming nerves as the reason without exploring why, matches Band 6.5's instruction to answer plainly with "one clear reason" rather than layering in further analysis.
  • GRAI booked a few lessons with an instructor near the beach, but I kept cancelling because I felt embarrassed being a beginner as an adult.A coordinated "but" clause is followed by a single because-clause explaining the cancellations. This is one layer of subordination stacked onto one coordination, close to the upper limit of what the Band 6.5 grammar target allows ("a few basic complex ones"), without the additional embedded detail or varied connectors a Band 7.0 answer would likely add.Một mệnh đề nối bằng "but" được theo sau bởi một mệnh đề "because" duy nhất giải thích cho việc hủy bỏ.
  • LRa little afraid of it"A little afraid" uses the simplest possible hedge-plus-adjective combination to describe fear, rather than a more specific word like "intimidated" or "uneasy" that a higher band might choose. This plainness is intentional at Band 6.5, where the descriptor explicitly discourages reaching for less-common vocabulary even when a more precise word is available."A little afraid" sử dụng sự kết hợp rào đón cộng tính từ đơn giản nhất có thể để mô tả nỗi sợ, thay vì một từ cụ thể hơn như "intimidated" hay "uneasy" mà một mức điểm cao hơn có thể chọn.
Band 7.0

The answer gives a clear, developed reason for the ambition (apps don't last, but a book does) and admits a specific failure pattern — three abandoned drafts — showing more self-aware development than the 6.5 answer without the layered honesty of the 7.5 version.Câu trả lời đưa ra một lý do rõ ràng, được phát triển đầy đủ cho ước mơ này (ứng dụng thì không tồn tại lâu, nhưng sách thì có) và thừa nhận một khuôn mẫu thất bại cụ thể — ba bản thảo bị bỏ dở — cho thấy sự phát triển tự nhận thức hơn bài Band 6.5, dù chưa có sự trung thực nhiều tầng lớp như bài Band 7.5.

The ambition that's been sitting unfinished for years is a children's picture book — text and illustrations both mine — built around the old ferry that used to carry people across the Hàn River in Da Nang before any of the bridges existed.

The concept itself is fairly clear in my head: a short book, maybe thirty pages, aimed at five-year-olds, following one ordinary school-day crossing through the eyes of a young girl, ending on the morning the ferry made its final run because the first bridge had just opened. I've interviewed a handful of elderly residents who actually used the ferry, and their recollections form most of the raw material.

Part of why this matters to me is professional frustration, if I'm honest — I design apps for a living, and nothing I build seems to survive more than a couple of years before it's rebuilt or replaced entirely. A physical book doesn't work that way; it can sit on a shelf for decades and get handed down. There's also something about wanting the ferry itself remembered somewhere, since there's no plaque or statue for it anywhere in the city, and the generation who rode it won't be around much longer.

I first had the idea nine years ago, when I was twenty-five, not long after a conversation with an old woman whose late husband had worked on the ferry. As for why it's still unfinished, the truthful answer is that I've abandoned three separate attempts, each time because the artwork didn't match what I could picture in my mind. Work always seems to take priority too, since this project has no client and no deadline pushing it forward. I've now given myself permission to start a fourth attempt and let it be genuinely rough, because that might be the only way it ever actually gets finished.

  • FCPart of why this matters to me is professional frustration, if I'm honest"Part of why" signals that more than one reason is coming, setting up the layered explanation that follows (professional frustration, then the wish for the ferry to be remembered), while "if I'm honest" marks the admission as a genuine, slightly vulnerable disclosure rather than a rehearsed line. This combination of forward-signalling structure and spoken hedging is what makes the answer feel like it's actually being reasoned through in real time, which is the natural, developed fluency Band 7.0 targets over the single flat reason a Band 6.5 answer would likely give."Part of why" báo hiệu rằng còn nhiều hơn một lý do sắp được nêu ra, thiết lập cho lời giải thích nhiều lớp theo sau (sự thất vọng nghề nghiệp, rồi mong muốn chiếc phà được ghi nhớ), trong khi "if I'm honest" đánh dấu lời thừa nhận đó như một sự bộc lộ thực sự, hơi dễ tổn thương chứ không phải một câu nói đã được luyện tập trước.
  • LRnothing I build seems to survive more than a couple of years before it's rebuilt or replaced entirelyRather than the plain word "temporary," the speaker builds the idea out through a small clause chain — "survive," "rebuilt," "replaced entirely" — that conveys the disposability of app design work through concrete, related verbs instead of one adjective. This kind of paraphrasing around an idea using ordinary but well-chosen words, instead of either a basic single word or a reached-for idiom, is exactly the flexible vocabulary Band 7.0 lexical resource rewards.
  • GRAI've now given myself permission to start a fourth attempt and let it be genuinely rough, because that might be the only way it ever actually gets finished. The sentence combines an infinitive construction, a because-clause and an embedded clause in one comfortable structure, showing the mixed complex grammar expected at Band 7.0.Câu này kết hợp cấu trúc động từ nguyên mẫu, một mệnh đề 'because' và một mệnh đề lồng trong một cấu trúc trôi chảy, cho thấy ngữ pháp phức hợp đa dạng được kỳ vọng ở Band 7.0.
Band 7.5

The answer's final admission — fear that finishing the book will prove he is 'a competent designer and an ordinary illustrator' — is a specific, self-critical insight rather than a generic excuse, the reflective honesty typical of Band 7.5.Lời thừa nhận cuối cùng của câu trả lời — nỗi sợ rằng việc hoàn thành cuốn sách sẽ chứng minh anh ấy chỉ là 'một nhà thiết kế có năng lực nhưng một họa sĩ minh họa bình thường' — là một nhận thức tự phê bình cụ thể chứ không phải một lời bào chữa chung chung, thể hiện sự trung thực mang tính suy ngẫm đặc trưng của Band 7.5.

The ambition I haven't achieved is to make a children's picture book — to write it and draw it myself — about the old ferry that used to cross the Hàn river in Da Nang before the bridges were built.

What the ambition is, exactly: a short book, thirty pages, for children of about five, telling the story of one day on the ferry as seen by a girl going to school on the other bank. The ferry, the day the first bridge opened and the ferry made its last crossing. I've talked to old people who rode it, and their memories are the material.

Why I want to achieve it is that I'm a designer of apps, and apps disappear. Every screen I've made for ten years has been replaced by another. A book stays on a shelf and gets read at bedtime by someone who'll remember it at forty, the way I remember the cricket book my mother read to me. I also want the ferry remembered; there's no monument to it, and the people who rode it are getting old. And there's a private reason — I want to know whether I can draw, properly, rather than only arrange.

How long I've had it: since I was twenty-five, so nine years. It began after a conversation with a ferryman's widow who lived on my street then.

Why I haven't achieved it yet is the uncomfortable part. I have three abandoned drafts. Each time, the drawings weren't good enough for the story in my head, so I stopped and decided to get better first. Work fills the time; the book has no deadline and no client, so it always loses. Honestly, I'm also afraid that finishing it will show that I'm a competent designer and an ordinary illustrator. This year I've promised myself a fourth draft that's allowed to be bad. That's the only version that will ever exist.

  • LRA book stays on a shelf and gets read at bedtimeThe concrete, natural collocation 'gets read at bedtime' paints a precise image rather than relying on generic vocabulary, typical of Band 7.5 lexical resource.Cách kết hợp từ cụ thể, tự nhiên 'gets read at bedtime' (được đọc trước giờ đi ngủ) vẽ nên một hình ảnh chính xác thay vì dựa vào từ vựng chung chung, đặc trưng cho vốn từ vựng ở Band 7.5.
  • GRAthe way I remember the cricket book my mother read to meThis clause is attached to the main sentence as an appositive comparison — "the way I remember X" — without its own connecting word like "just as" or "similar to," economically fusing the comparison onto "get read at bedtime... and remember it at forty" just before it. That kind of compressed, connector-free grammar, which still reads clearly and naturally, is a more sophisticated structural choice than the explicit "because" or "so" clauses a Band 7.0 answer would rely on, matching Band 7.5's target of flexible, economical complex grammar.Mệnh đề này được gắn vào câu chính như một so sánh đồng vị ngữ — "the way I remember X" — mà không cần từ nối riêng như "just as" hay "similar to", hợp nhất một cách tiết kiệm phép so sánh vào "get read at bedtime... and remember it at forty" ngay trước đó.
  • FCI'm also afraid that finishing it will show that I'm a competent designer and an ordinary illustrator. This sentence names a specific, uncomfortable fear — not vague self-doubt, but the precise worry that finishing the project will reveal a ceiling on the speaker's talent — and states it plainly rather than softening it. Volunteering this kind of genuinely risky, self-critical content, instead of staying with safer explanations like being "too busy," is the sustained reflective depth that separates Band 7.5 coherence from the single reflective aside typical of Band 7.0, which would be more likely to name only the external excuse (work, no deadline) and stop there.Câu này gọi tên một nỗi sợ cụ thể, khó chịu — không phải sự tự nghi ngờ mơ hồ, mà là nỗi lo chính xác rằng việc hoàn thành dự án sẽ bộc lộ một giới hạn trong tài năng của người nói — và phát biểu nó một cách thẳng thắn thay vì làm mềm nó đi.

Uses the plain contrastive 'but' and 'while' to hold the two designers' stories together, and closes with a short 'so' clause stating the conclusion directly.Dùng từ tương phản đơn giản 'but' và 'while' để gắn kết câu chuyện của hai người thiết kế lại với nhau, và kết bằng một mệnh đề 'so' ngắn nêu thẳng kết luận.

Not very fairly, I think. Two people I trained with were equally ambitious and talented, but one was born in Ho Chi Minh City with parents who knew people, while the other came from a village and spent five years catching up on things the first one already had. I think ambition is rewarded, but the reward depends a lot on where you started. Society also rewards ambition differently depending on the field, like founders getting more support than teachers. Luck and timing matter a lot too, so ambition alone isn't enough for success.

    • FCI think ambition is rewarded, but the reward depends a lot on where you started.A single 'but' clause states the main judgement plainly. The 7.5 answer fuses a similar idea directly onto the end of the anecdote with a dash instead, avoiding a separate sentence for the conclusion.Một mệnh đề 'but' đơn lẻ phát biểu nhận định chính một cách trần trụi.
    • LRthe reward depends a lot on where you startedThis is workable but fairly plain phrasing. The 7.5 answer sharpens the same idea into 'the reward gets multiplied by where you started', replacing the vague 'depends on' with the more precise, almost mathematical verb 'multiplied'.Đây là cách diễn đạt dùng được nhưng khá đơn giản. Câu trả lời của băng 7.5 mài sắc cùng ý đó thành 'the reward gets multiplied by where you started', dùng động từ chính xác, gần như mang tính toán học 'multiplied' thay cho 'depends on' mơ hồ.
    • GRALuck and timing matter a lot too, so ambition alone isn't enough for success.A short 'so' clause draws the conclusion. The 7.5 answer expresses a related idea across two separate, more developed sentences — 'Ambition is necessary for the reward — it's far from sufficient, and the missing part is often inherited' — building a longer chain of reasoning.Một mệnh đề 'so' ngắn đi đến kết luận. Câu trả lời của băng 7.5 lại diễn đạt một ý liên quan qua hai câu đầy đủ, được triển khai kỹ hơn - 'Ambition is necessary for the reward — it's far from sufficient, and the missing part is often inherited' - xây dựng một chuỗi lập luận dài hơn.

Uses 'yet' instead of a plain 'but' to link the two contrasting biographies, and adds the specific comparison between founders and teachers as its own dash-set-off example.Dùng 'yet' thay vì 'but' đơn giản để nối hai câu chuyện đời đối lập, và thêm sự so sánh cụ thể giữa người sáng lập và giáo viên như một ví dụ riêng ngăn bằng dấu gạch ngang.

Honestly, not very fairly, I'd say. Two people I trained with were equally ambitious and equally talented, yet one was born in Ho Chi Minh City with parents who knew the right people, while the other came from a village and spent five years catching up on things the first one had by eighteen. To be fair, ambition genuinely is rewarded, but the reward seems to get multiplied by where you started. Society also rewards ambition unevenly across fields — ambitious founders get capital and admiration, while ambitious teachers just get a slightly better classroom. I'd say luck and timing matter almost as much as effort does.

I think people gain more than they might lose, even if the goal itself isn't reached yet. My picture book still doesn't exist, but it has already given me nine years of drawing practice and conversations with older people I'd never have met otherwise. High aspirations give life a direction, so people keep improving instead of settling. They push people to try things beyond their current ability, which is really the only way ability grows. They also make setbacks feel bearable, since one failure inside a bigger goal is just a small step. The cost is some anxiety, but I think most people would take that trade.

The 7.5 answer instead fuses the whole anecdote onto a longer list with a dash before naming the conclusion — 'the ambition has paid off before it's even been fulfilled' — a more integrated structure.'But' đơn giản mở đầu câu chuyện trực tiếp như một sự tương phản. Câu trả lời của băng 7.5 lại gộp toàn bộ câu chuyện vào một danh sách dài hơn bằng dấu gạch ngang trước khi nêu kết luận - “the ambition has paid off before it's even been fulfilled” - một cấu trúc tích hợp hơn.
    • LRone failure inside a bigger goal is just a small stepThis is workable but plain phrasing. Câu trả lời của băng 7.5 mài 'bigger goal' thành 'larger purpose' chính xác hơn, và thêm 'along the way' ở cuối, mang lại cho cùng ý đó một hình thức tinh tế hơn một chút.
    • GRAThe cost is some anxiety, but I think most people would take that trade.A short 'but' sentence closes the answer. Honestly, I think people gain more than they lose, even before the goal itself is achieved. My picture book still doesn't exist, and yet it's already produced nine years of drawing practice and conversations with older people I'd never otherwise have met. To be fair, high aspirations give life a direction and a standard, so a person keeps improving rather than simply settling. They also push people to attempt things beyond their current ability, which is honestly the only way ability actually grows. And they make setbacks more bearable, since a failure inside a larger purpose is just one step, not the whole story. The cost is some anxiety and the occasional disappointment, but I'd say most people would still take that trade.

My picture book doesn't exist, and yet it has produced nine years of drawing practice, conversations with old people I'd never have met, and a reason to look at the river every morning — the ambition has paid off before it's even been fulfilled. High aspirations give life a direction and a standard, so a person keeps improving rather than settling for less. They push people to attempt things beyond their current ability, which is really the only way ability ever grows, and they make setbacks bearable, since a failure inside a larger purpose is just a step along the way. They also create a story a person can tell about themselves. The costs are anxiety and the occasional disappointment — most people, I'd guess, would still take that trade.

I think that's exactly what ambitions do for children, they turn effort into play. Children with ambitions, however strange, learn to connect today's work with tomorrow's result, which is a skill even many adults never really manage. The ambition itself will probably change many times, and that's completely fine. It goes wrong when the ambition actually belongs to the parents instead.

Câu trả lời của băng 7.5 dùng dấu hai chấm sau dấu gạch ngang - 'that's exactly what ambitions do for children: they turn effort into play' - một lựa chọn dấu câu báo hiệu rõ ràng hơn lời giải thích sắp tới.

Honestly, I think it's important, as long as nobody takes it too seriously. My niece's current ambition is to be the drummer on a dragon boat, which is silly and oddly specific, and it's made her practise, for the first time, at something with no exam attached at all. To be fair, that's really what ambitions do for children — they turn ordinary effort into something closer to play. Children with ambitions, however strange they are, learn to connect today's work to tomorrow's result, a skill many adults genuinely never manage. The ambition itself will probably change ten times over, and that's completely fine. Where it goes wrong is when the ambition actually belongs to the parents, and the child is just the vehicle for it.

I think patience matters most, which sounds like the opposite of ambition but really isn't. Linh's willingness to rehearse a talk eleven times is what turned her ambition into something real, while ambitious people who fail usually just wanted the result without doing the repetitions. Beyond that, competence obviously matters, since wanting something isn't actually a skill. The ability to work with people matters too, because almost nothing gets achieved alone, and ambitious people who make enemies find every door closed. Honesty also matters, so colleagues can trust the ambition isn't aimed at them. I think talent helps, but patience and people matter more.

    • FCBeyond that, competence obviously matters, since wanting something isn't actually a skill.'Beyond that' is a simple transitional phrase moving to the next quality. The 7.5 answer drops this connector entirely, using a bare colon after 'Beyond that:' to launch straight into the next quality without a full linking sentence.'Beyond that' là một cụm chuyển tiếp đơn giản để dẫn vào phẩm chất tiếp theo.
    • LRfind every door closedThis idiom is used almost identically across the bands. The real variation is in the surrounding vocabulary: the 6.5 answer says people 'make enemies', while the 7.5 answer keeps the same phrase, showing that even at 6.5 this particular idiom is already within reach.
    • GRAI think talent helps, but patience and people matter more.A short 'but' sentence closes the answer. The 7.5 answer splits this into two separate short sentences — 'Talent helps. Patience and people matter more.' — a more clipped, deliberate rhythm than the single joined sentence at 6.5.Một câu 'but' ngắn khép lại câu trả lời. Câu trả lời của băng 7.5 tách thành hai câu ngắn - 'Talent helps. Patience and people matter more.'
    Band 7.0

Adds small intensifying phrases like 'along the way' and 'eventually' onto otherwise similar sentences, giving the same ideas a slightly more developed, considered feel.

Honestly, I think patience matters most, which sounds like the opposite of ambition and genuinely isn't. Linh's willingness to rehearse a talk eleven times is really what turned her ambition into something real, while the ambitious people who fail are usually the ones who wanted the result without the actual repetitions. Beyond that, competence obviously matters, since wanting something on its own isn't a skill. The ability to work with people matters just as much, because almost nothing is achieved entirely alone, and ambitious people who make enemies along the way find every door eventually closed. Honesty matters too, so colleagues can trust that the ambition isn't secretly aimed at them. Talent helps, I'd say, but patience and people matter more in the end.

    • LRwanted the result without the actual repetitionsThe added adjective 'actual' emphasises the gap between wanting an outcome and doing the real work, a slightly sharper phrasing than the 6.5 answer's plainer 'without doing the repetitions'.Tính từ bổ sung 'actual' nhấn mạnh khoảng cách giữa việc muốn một kết quả và thực sự làm công việc đó, một cách diễn đạt sắc hơn một chút so với 'without doing the repetitions' đơn giản của băng 6.5.
    • GRAambitious people who make enemies along the way find every door eventually closedThe inserted phrases 'along the way' and 'eventually' add temporal texture to an otherwise identical clause structure, a small refinement over the 6.5 answer's flatter version of the same sentence.Các cụm chèn 'along the way' và 'eventually' thêm lớp thời gian vào một mệnh đề vốn có cấu trúc giống hệt, một sự tinh chỉnh nhỏ so với phiên bản bằng phẳng hơn của cùng câu đó ở băng 6.5.
    Band 7.5

Drops full subject-verb sentences for most of the list, instead naming each quality as a fragment followed by its justification, a bolder and more compressed structure than either lower band attempts.Bỏ câu đầy đủ chủ ngữ - động từ cho phần lớn danh sách, thay vào đó gọi tên từng phẩm chất bằng một cụm từ theo sau là lý do của nó, táo bạo và cô đọng hơn cả hai băng điểm thấp hơn.

Patience, above all, which sounds like the opposite of ambition and isn't. Linh's willingness to rehearse a talk eleven times is what turned her ambition into something real; the ambitious people who fail are usually the ones who wanted the result without the repetitions. Beyond that: competence, obviously, since wanting something isn't a skill. The ability to work with people, because almost nothing is achieved alone, and ambitious people who make enemies find every door closed. Honesty, so that colleagues trust the ambition isn't aimed at them. Resilience, since ambitious people fail more often simply by attempting more. And judgement about which ambitions are worth the cost. Talent helps. Patience and people matter more.

  9. 9. Do you agree or disagree that being too ambitious may not be good for children?

    Band 6.5

Uses commas to chain the three 'said so' clauses together loosely, rather than separating the boy's ambition into its own more compact structure.Nối ba mệnh đề 'said so' khá lỏng lẻo bằng dấu phẩy, thay vì tách riêng ước mơ của cậu bé thành một cấu trúc chặt chẽ hơn.

I agree, and I think of a boy from my class in Hue. At eight he was going to be a surgeon, his parents said so, his teachers said so, and he said so too, and at fourteen one bad maths mark broke something in him that I don't think was ever fully repaired. I think the ambition had become his whole identity, and it had no room left for failure. Ambition in children should be large and loose, more like a direction than a contract. When it becomes rigid, it produces anxiety and a fear of even trying. Children need to be allowed to want things badly and still lose them sometimes without it meaning the end.

    • FCI think the ambition had become his whole identity, and it had no room left for failure. This is a plain, separate sentence stating the diagnosis. The 7.5 answer fuses a nearly identical diagnosis directly onto the anecdote sentence using 'because', avoiding a new sentence for the same idea.Đây là một câu riêng, đơn giản, phát biểu chẩn đoán.
    • LRone bad maths mark broke something in himThis phrase is used closely across all three bands, but the surrounding description shifts: 6.5 says it 'was ever fully repaired', while 7.5 uses the plainer, slightly more understated 'was ever repaired', trimming the intensifier for a more controlled tone.Cụm từ này được dùng gần giống nhau ở cả ba băng điểm, nhưng phần mô tả xung quanh thay đổi: băng 6.5 nói 'was ever fully repaired', còn băng 7.5 dùng cách nói bằng phẳng hơn, hơi kiềm chế hơn 'was ever repaired', bỏ từ nhấn mạnh để giọng điệu có kiểm soát hơn.
    • GRAAt eight he was going to be a surgeon, his parents said so, his teachers said so, and he said so too, and at fourteen one bad maths mark broke something in him that I don't think was ever fully repaired.A long chain of comma-joined clauses runs through this sentence without much internal punctuation variety. The 7.5 answer punctuates a similar list with dashes to set off the repeated 'said so' clauses more clearly, giving the sentence more visible structure.Câu này chứa một chuỗi dài các mệnh đề nối bằng dấu phẩy, không có nhiều biến thể dấu câu bên trong. Câu trả lời của băng 7.5 đóng khung một danh sách tương tự bằng dấu gạch ngang để nêu bật các mệnh đề lặp lại 'said so', cho câu một cấu trúc rõ ràng hơn.
    Band 7.0

Sets the three 'said so' clauses off between dashes rather than commas, and extends the list of what rigid ambition produces to three items instead of two.Dùng dấu gạch ngang thay vì dấu phẩy để đóng khung ba mệnh đề 'said so', và mở rộng danh sách hậu quả của ước mơ cứng nhắc thành ba mục thay vì hai.

Honestly, I agree, and I think of a boy from my class in Hue. At eight he was going to be a surgeon — his parents said so, his teachers said so, he said so himself — and at fourteen one bad maths mark broke something in him that I don't think was ever properly repaired. To be fair, the ambition had become his entire identity by then, and it simply had no room for failure. Ambition in children should stay large and loose — a direction, not a contract. When it becomes rigid instead, it produces anxiety, a fear of even trying, and a childhood spent as preparation rather than as childhood itself. Children need to be allowed to want things badly and lose them without it meaning the end.

• GRAWhen it becomes rigid instead, it produces anxiety, a fear of even trying, and a childhood spent as preparation rather than as childhood itself.A three-item list follows the 'when' clause, longer than the 6.5 answer's two-item version of the same list, adding the extra clause about childhood as preparation.
