Đề bài (cue card)

Describe a time you made an important decision and were pleased with the result.

You should say:

  • what the important decision was
  • why you chose to make this decision
  • how easy it was to decide
  • and explain why you were pleased with the result of this important decision.

Band 6.5

A plain comparative sentence and the simple statement 'How easy it was to decide is a difficult question' keep the answer correct but linguistically modest, Band 6.5 level.Một câu so sánh đơn giản cùng câu nói đơn giản 'How easy it was to decide is a difficult question' (Việc quyết định dễ dàng đến đâu lại là một câu hỏi khó) giữ cho câu trả lời chính xác nhưng khiêm tốn về mặt ngôn ngữ, mức Band 6.5.

The decision I want to talk about is my decision to move from Hue to Da Nang after I finished university in Hanoi, about six years ago. Instead of going back to live near my family in Hue, I chose to move alone to Da Nang and look for a job there as a UI designer.

Why I chose this was because Da Nang had more design studios and more modern companies than Hue at that time, and I wanted to work on bigger projects, like mobile apps for international clients. I also liked the idea of living near the beach and starting a life on my own.

How easy it was to decide is a difficult question. The decision itself came quite quickly, in just a few days, because I really wanted this kind of job. But it wasn't easy in my heart, because my parents worried about me living alone in a new city, and my grandmother didn't understand why I couldn't just work near home.

I'm very pleased with the result now. I found a good job at a small studio here, I've made close friends, and I really enjoy my life by the river. Every time I visit Hue, I feel proud that I made that decision by myself, even though it was hard at the beginning.

  • GRADa Nang had more design studios and more modern companies than Hue at that timeThis is a straightforward comparative structure, repeating "more... than" across two parallel nouns, studios and companies, used correctly but without any additional subordination or variation layered on. It's accurate and gets the comparison across clearly, matching the mostly-simple-sentence profile expected at 6.5. The comparison also directly supports the reason given for the move, keeping the grammar tied closely to the content rather than being decorative.Đây là một cấu trúc so sánh thẳng thắn, lặp lại "more... than" trên hai danh từ song hành, studios và companies, được dùng đúng nhưng không có thêm sự phụ thuộc hay biến đổi nào được xếp chồng lên trên.
  • FCHow easy it was to decide is a difficult question. This short, plain statement directly acknowledges the complexity of the question without elaborating on it much beyond the following two sentences, which is a clear but minimal way to signal a nuanced answer is coming. At 6.5, this kind of direct topic sentence keeps the answer coherent and on-task; a 7.5 answer might instead open with a more evaluative or figurative framing.
  • LRI'm very pleased with the result now"Very pleased" is plain, high-frequency vocabulary stating the outcome directly, with no more varied or specific alternative like "genuinely relieved" or "proud of how it turned out." It's accurate and appropriately positive, summing up the paragraph before the specific details of job, friends, and life by the river that follow. This kind of unembellished summary phrase is typical of 6.5, where clarity is prioritized over lexical variety."Very pleased" là vốn từ bằng phẳng, tần suất cao phát biểu trực tiếp kết quả, mà không có lựa chọn thay thế đa dạng hoặc cụ thể hơn nào như "genuinely relieved" hay "proud of how it turned out".
Band 7.0

The 'not just...but' structure explaining what makes the outcome pleasing shows reasoned, comfortable development typical of Band 7.0, without idiomatic reach.Cấu trúc 'not just...but' giải thích điều gì khiến kết quả trở nên đáng hài lòng cho thấy sự phát triển có lý lẽ, tự nhiên điển hình cho Band 7.0, mà không cần vươn tới mức thành ngữ.

The decision I'd like to talk about is my decision to switch from studying architecture to working in UI design, which I made about four years ago, halfway through a training course in architecture.

I chose to make this decision because, while I was doing an internship at an architecture firm, I realised I actually enjoyed the digital design software side of the work far more than the physical building side. A friend suggested I try a short online course in UI design just to see if I liked it, and within a few weeks I was pretty sure I'd found something I was genuinely more suited to.

It wasn't an easy decision to make, if I'm honest. I'd already spent a couple of years studying architecture, and part of me worried I'd be wasting that time if I switched. My parents were also a little concerned at first, since UI design wasn't something they knew much about, and it felt like a less stable choice compared to a more traditional career path.

I'm really pleased with how it turned out, though. I found a junior position at a design studio not long after finishing the course, and within a year or so I was already leading small projects myself. I think what makes me most pleased isn't just the job itself, but the fact that I actually look forward to going to work most days now, which wasn't really true when I was studying architecture. Whenever I doubt myself, I remind myself how much more confident and capable I feel in this field compared to before, and that usually reassures me I made the right call.

  • GRApart of me worried I'd be wasting that time if I switchedA conditional clause, "if I switched," is embedded inside a reported-thought structure, "part of me worried I'd be...," handling the hypothetical worry naturally within the larger sentence rather than as a standalone if-clause. This is the comfortable, accurate complex grammar the 7.0 descriptor describes, more ambitious than a plain statement of worry but not layered with additional subordination the way a 7.5 sentence might be. It also gives weight to the "wasn't an easy decision" claim made just before it, showing the genuine hesitation behind the change.Một mệnh đề điều kiện, "if I switched", được lồng vào bên trong một cấu trúc tường thuật ý nghĩ gián tiếp, "part of me worried I'd be...", xử lý nỗi lo lắng giả định một cách tự nhiên trong khuôn khổ câu lớn hơn thay vì như một mệnh đề if độc lập.
  • FCwhat makes me most pleased isn't just the job itself, but the fact that I actually look forward to going to work most days nowThe "not just X but Y" structure develops the answer with a reflective distinction, separating the job itself from the daily feeling of looking forward to it, rather than simply restating that the career change worked out well. This is the kind of development beyond plain description the 7.0 fluency descriptor calls for; a 6.5 answer would likely just say "I'm happy with my job now." It also sharpens the contrast drawn in the final sentence with how the speaker felt studying architecture.Cấu trúc "not just X but Y" phát triển câu trả lời bằng một sự phân biệt mang tính phản tư, tách công việc bản thân ra khỏi cảm giác hàng ngày mong chờ được làm nó, thay vì chỉ đơn thuần nhắc lại rằng việc chuyển nghề đã có kết quả tốt. Đây chính là kiểu phát triển vượt xa mô tả bằng phẳng mà mô tả độ trôi chảy Band 7.0 yêu cầu; một bài Band 6.5 nhiều khả năng chỉ nói "I'm happy with my job now".
  • LRI realised I actually enjoyed the digital design software side of the work far more than the physical building side"Far more than" is a natural, flexible way of intensifying a comparison, stronger and more idiomatic-sounding than a plain "much more than," used here to contrast two concrete aspects of architectural work, the digital software side versus the physical building side. This is the step slightly above plain vocabulary that 7.0 lexical resource calls for, without reaching for a genuinely rare word. It also identifies precisely the moment of realization that triggered the whole career change described in the rest of the answer."Far more than" là một cách tự nhiên, linh hoạt để nhấn mạnh một sự so sánh, mạnh mẽ hơn và nghe mang tính thành ngữ hơn một cụm bằng phẳng như "much more than", được dùng ở đây để tương phản hai khía cạnh cụ thể của công việc kiến trúc, mặt phần mềm kỹ thuật số so với mặt công trình vật lý.
Band 7.5

The balanced parallel structure 'I couldn't see a way to do the work well without doing harm, and I couldn't see a way to do it badly and stay proud of the studio' shows the sophisticated, controlled grammar of Band 7.5.Cấu trúc song song cân đối 'I couldn't see a way to do the work well without doing harm, and I couldn't see a way to do it badly and stay proud of the studio' (Tôi không thấy cách nào để làm tốt công việc mà không gây hại, và tôi cũng không thấy cách nào để làm kém mà vẫn tự hào về studio của mình) cho thấy ngữ pháp tinh tế, được kiểm soát tốt của Band 7.5.

The decision I'd describe was one I made at the studio last year, when I was the design lead on a project we hadn't yet accepted: I recommended that we turn down the biggest contract we'd ever been offered.

What the decision was, specifically: a company approached us to design an online gambling app, with a budget roughly three times our usual project fee. The founders were polite, and the money would have paid the studio's salaries for most of a year.

Why I chose to make the decision was that I'd spent a month looking at how these apps work. They're designed to keep people playing when they should stop, and the design skill required — the part they wanted us for — is exactly the skill of making it hard to leave. I couldn't see a way to do the work well without doing harm, and I couldn't see a way to do it badly and stay proud of the studio. I also thought about my uncle, who lost a motorbike and most of a year to card games on his phone, and about how a version of me would have designed the screens he couldn't close.

How easy it was to decide: the principle was easy, and everything else was hard. Two of the founders argued for taking it. We had a slow quarter ahead. I had to stand in a meeting and say that I'd rather the studio was smaller than that. We voted, and it was close.

The result, which is why I'm pleased, took eight months to show. The quarter was as slow as feared. Then a hospital group chose us for the project I've been describing all year, and their director told me afterwards that one reason was a story he'd heard about a studio that turned down a gambling client. We were, apparently, the ones who'd say no. It's the best thing anyone's said about my work.

Kết quả — lý do khiến tôi hài lòng — phải mất tám tháng mới hiện rõ.

  • GRAI couldn't see a way to do the work well without doing harm, and I couldn't see a way to do it badly and stay proud of the studio. Both clauses open with the identical frame 'I couldn't see a way to,' then diverge into two different consequences — doing the work well but causing harm, versus doing it badly but keeping pride — a deliberately engineered parallelism, not an accidental repetition. Sustaining that kind of balanced, symmetrical structure across a long sentence without an error is the sophisticated grammatical control the Band 7.5 target rewards, well beyond the single simple contrast a 6.5 answer would offer. The parallelism also mirrors the genuine ethical bind the speaker is describing — there was no good option — so the grammar enacts the dilemma rather than just describing it.Cả hai mệnh đề đều mở đầu bằng cùng một khuôn mẫu 'I couldn't see a way to,' rồi rẽ nhánh thành hai hệ quả khác nhau — làm tốt công việc nhưng gây hại, đối lập với làm không tốt nhưng giữ được lòng tự trọng — một sự đối xứng được thiết kế có chủ đích, không phải sự lặp lại tình cờ.
  • LRI'd rather the studio was smaller than that'I'd rather the studio was smaller than that' uses the idiomatic 'would rather + past subjunctive' pattern naturally and briefly, rather than a more textbook-sounding paraphrase like 'I would prefer the company to remain small.' Deploying this kind of native-like structure smoothly, in the middle of reported speech from a tense meeting, is the natural collocation and idiomatic flexibility the Band 7.5 target rewards over the plainer, more literal phrasing a 6.5 or 7.0 answer would reach for. It also captures the emotional register of the moment — a blunt, almost defiant line actually said out loud in a meeting.'I'd rather the studio was smaller than that' sử dụng mẫu câu thành ngữ 'would rather + quá khứ giả định' một cách tự nhiên và ngắn gọn, thay vì một cách diễn giải nghe có vẻ giáo khoa hơn kiểu 'I would prefer the company to remain small.'
  • FCWe were, apparently, the ones who'd say no. It's the best thing anyone's said about my work. After eight months of narrated consequence, the answer resolves into two short, almost clipped sentences rather than one long summarising statement, and the word 'apparently' signals the speaker only learned this secondhand, adding a layer of understated surprise. This kind of compressed, reflective payoff — stating what the decision came to mean rather than just what happened — is the evaluative closing move the Band 7.5 coherence target expects, in contrast to a plainer answer that would end on a flat statement like 'I was happy with my decision.' The shift to short sentences also gives the ending real rhetorical weight, letting the final line land without being buried in additional clauses.

  1. 1. What small decisions do people need to make in their everyday lives?

    tháng 9–12/2026
    So sánh Band 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 cho câu hỏi này
    Band 6.5

This 6.5 answer stays at band level through short, plainly connected sentences and the basic linker "So I think routines are useful, because", rather than any more complex construction.Bài mẫu 6.5 điểm này giữ ở mức điểm đó nhờ các câu ngắn, liên kết đơn giản và từ nối cơ bản "So I think routines are useful, because", thay vì dùng cấu trúc phức tạp hơn.

People make many small decisions every day. In my morning, I decide what to wear, whether to swim or sleep more, and which route to take to work. I also decide what to eat and how to reply to messages. These choices feel small, but there are so many of them that they can be tiring. So I think routines are useful, because they turn small decisions into habits and save energy for bigger choices.

    • FCSo I think routines are useful, becauseThe simple linking word "so" gives a direct, mechanical connection between the example and the conclusion. A higher band would vary cohesion with a phrase like "that's why" or fold the reasoning into a single flowing sentence instead of starting a new one with "so".Từ nối đơn giản "so" tạo ra sự liên kết trực tiếp, có phần máy móc giữa ví dụ và kết luận.
    • LRsmall decisionsThis phrase is lifted straight from the question, showing limited paraphrase.
    • GRAThese choices feel small, but there are so many of them that they can be tiring.A single compound-complex sentence, but built from simple clauses joined mechanically with "but" and "that". A 7.5 answer would compress this into a participial or fronted structure for more flexibility.Đây là một câu ghép-phức, nhưng thực chất được tạo thành từ các mệnh đề đơn giản nối với nhau một cách máy móc bằng "but" và "that".
    Band 7.0

The spoken hedge "Honestly, people make dozens" and the correlative "until you're tired, and then suddenly they all do" mark this as a 7.0 answer, reflective but still built from fairly linear sentences.Cách nói giảm nhẹ theo văn nói "Honestly, people make dozens" cùng cấu trúc tương quan "until you're tired, and then suddenly they all do" cho thấy đây là bài 7.0 điểm — có tính suy ngẫm nhưng câu văn vẫn khá tuyến tính.

Honestly, people make dozens of small decisions before they even leave the house. My own mornings involve deciding what to wear, whether to swim or sleep a bit longer, which route to take, and whether the rain radar means I should leave now. Then there's what to eat, what to reply to first, and whether coffee happens at the café or the studio. I'd say none of these feel like real decisions until you're tired, and then suddenly they all do. That's why I think having a routine matters, because it turns these small choices into habits and saves your energy for the ones that actually count.

    • FCHonestly, people make dozensThe hedge "Honestly" opens the answer with a natural spoken register, a feature rare at 6.5. Still, the paragraph relies on straightforward chronological listing rather than the tighter, woven cohesion of a 7.5 response.Từ giảm nhẹ "Honestly" mở đầu câu trả lời bằng giọng văn nói tự nhiên, một đặc điểm hiếm gặp ở band 6.5. Tuy vậy, cả đoạn vẫn dựa vào cách liệt kê theo trình tự thời gian đơn giản, chứ chưa có sự liên kết chặt chẽ, đan xen như bài 7.5.
    • LRwhether the rain radar means I should leave nowThis shows more precise, personalised vocabulary than a generic "what to wear" list alone would. A 7.5 band would push further into idiomatic compactness, e.g. "the rain radar says go".Đoạn này cho thấy vốn từ chính xác và mang tính cá nhân hơn so với việc chỉ liệt kê chung chung "what to wear". Band 7.5 sẽ đẩy xa hơn nữa tới sự súc tích, tự nhiên kiểu thành ngữ, ví dụ "the rain radar says go".
    • GRAI'd say none of these feel like real decisions until you're tired, and then suddenly they all doThis correlative structure ("until... then") shows more grammatical range than plain simple sentences, though it still uses two independent clauses joined by "and" rather than a subordinated or fronted structure.Cấu trúc tương quan này ("until... then") cho thấy phạm vi ngữ pháp phong phú hơn so với câu đơn thuần túy, dù vẫn chỉ là hai mệnh đề độc lập nối bằng "and" chứ chưa dùng cấu trúc phụ thuộc hay đảo ngữ.
    Band 7.5

The cleft structure "What routines do, I think, is convert small decisions into habits" and the image "stitched together from small choices" push this into 7.5 territory through compact, idiomatic phrasing.Cấu trúc câu chẻ (cleft) "What routines do, I think, is convert small decisions into habits" cùng hình ảnh "stitched together from small choices" đưa bài viết lên mức 7.5 nhờ cách diễn đạt súc tích, tự nhiên như người bản ngữ.

Dozens of decisions get made before breakfast, most of them invisible until fatigue makes them loud. My own mornings are stitched together from small choices — what to wear, whether to swim or sleep in, which route beats the traffic, whether the rain radar means leaving now, and whether coffee happens at the café or the studio. People decide what to eat, what to spend, whether to say something or quietly let it go. Parents, meanwhile, are making these calls for two people at once. What routines do, I think, is convert small decisions into habits, freeing up mental energy for the choices that genuinely matter. A day with absolutely no routine is a day built from a thousand tiny choices, and that is simply exhausting.

    • FCmost of them invisible until fatigue makes them loudThis participial phrase folds a whole extra idea into the opening sentence rather than starting a new one, giving tighter cohesion than a more sequential listing would.Cụm phân từ này gói gọn cả một ý bổ sung vào ngay câu mở đầu thay vì tách thành câu mới, tạo sự liên kết chặt chẽ hơn so với cách liệt kê tuần tự.
    • LRstitched together from small choicesThe metaphor "stitched together" is genuinely idiomatic and precise, well beyond the plain "involve deciding" of a lower band; a 6.5 answer would use no figurative language at all here.Phép ẩn dụ "stitched together" thực sự tự nhiên và chính xác, vượt xa cách diễn đạt đơn giản "involve deciding" ở band thấp hơn; bài 6.5 điểm sẽ hoàn toàn không dùng ngôn ngữ hình tượng ở chỗ này.

Simple listing punctuated by the plain connector "So early decisions are about study and work" keeps this answer at 6.5, with ideas presented one after another rather than fused.Cách liệt kê đơn giản, kèm từ nối bình thường "So early decisions are about study and work", khiến bài này dừng ở mức 6.5 — các ý được trình bày lần lượt chứ không hòa quyện vào nhau.

People make different important decisions as they get older. My sister chose her subject to study at eighteen, then chose a city to work in at twenty-two, and got married at twenty-seven. Later she decided to have children. Now, at thirty-eight, she is deciding whether to move back to Hue to be near our parents. So early decisions are about study and work, and later ones are about family and taking care of parents.

Take my sister: she chose which subject to study at eighteen, which city to work in at twenty-two, and who to marry at twenty-seven, and now, at thirty-eight, she's deciding whether to move back to Hue to be near our ageing parents. Early decisions are usually about direction, like education and career, while later ones are more about commitment, such as a partner or a family. Early decisions tend to be about direction: education, career, where to live. Middle-life ones are about commitment: a partner, children, perhaps a business. Later ones shift toward care and letting go, including retirement and health. People also ask because someone else has already been through the same thing, like a career change, and that experience is hard to get just by thinking alone. Often it isn't the answer people are really after. Before the vote on a gambling client, I called my old studio director, and what I needed wasn't her opinion so much as a chance to hear my own reasoning spoken aloud to someone willing to push back — advice, in that sense, is a way of thinking with a witness. People also ask because others have lived through it, and someone who has changed careers or raised children simply knows things no amount of solitary thinking supplies. Some are quietly hoping for permission to do what they've already decided, while others genuinely don't know, and a second mind catches what theirs has missed.

I think it depends on the decision. I took a month to decide about the gambling client because it was a big decision, but I decided to hire Linh in only five seconds after her interview, and both were right. Slow decisions are better for big things like marriage or buying a house. Quick decisions are fine for small things that can be changed later. So people should not waste time deciding things that do not really matter.

Honestly, I'd say it depends on whether the decision can be reversed. I spent a whole month deciding about the gambling client, because the effects would last for years, but I hired Linh in about five seconds at the end of her interview, and both decisions turned out fine. Slow decisions suit things that are expensive or irreversible, like a marriage or a business direction, while quick ones suit almost everything else, since most choices can be corrected later. I think the real problem is when a slow decision is actually just avoidance, and the delay becomes the decision itself.

It really depends on whether the decision can be undone. I took a month over the gambling client, since the consequences would last years, yet I hired Linh in five seconds flat at the end of her interview — and both turned out right. Slow decisions suit the irreversible and the expensive: a marriage, a house, a business direction. Quick ones suit almost everything else, which is most things, and people waste huge amounts of energy agonising over choices that barely matter. Speed even has a hidden benefit, giving you time left over to learn from the result. What's worst, I think, is the slow decision that's really just avoidance in disguise, where the delay becomes the choice.

Yes, I think it is possible, but only if there is a clear process. Eleven people at my studio made a difficult decision in just one meeting, because someone asked the question clearly, everyone spoke, and then we voted. But sixty people in my street's group chat took a whole month to choose a paint colour, and in the end one person just decided anyway. So large groups can be good at decisions, but without a clear process, they usually fail.

I'd say yes, but structure makes all the difference. Eleven people at my studio reached a difficult, good decision in a single meeting, because someone framed the question clearly, everyone spoke once, and then there was a vote. On the other hand, sixty people in my alley's group chat spent a whole month failing to choose a paint colour, and eventually let one person decide anyway. To be fair, large groups often know more between them than any one person does, but what they lack is coherence, so without a clear process, the loudest voices tend to win.

    • FCTo be fair, large groups often know more between them than any one person doesThe hedge "To be fair" signals balanced, natural reasoning that lower bands lack, though the sentence is still linked to the rest with the simple connector "so" rather than the semicolon-based contrast used at 7.5.Từ giảm nhẹ "To be fair" báo hiệu lối lập luận cân bằng, tự nhiên mà band thấp hơn không có, tuy câu này vẫn được nối với phần còn lại bằng từ nối đơn giản "so" chứ chưa dùng cấu trúc đối lập bằng dấu chấm phẩy như ở band 7.5.
    • LRwhat they lack is coherence"Coherence" is precise, slightly abstract vocabulary appropriate to the topic, a step up from a vaguer "fail"; this phrase already sits near top-band level."Coherence" là từ vựng chính xác, hơi trừu tượng và phù hợp với chủ đề, tiến bộ hơn so với từ mơ hồ "fail"; cách diễn đạt này đã gần đạt tới mức band cao nhất.
    • GRAOn the other hand, sixty people in my alley's group chat spent a whole month failing to choose a paint colour, and eventually let one person decide anyway. This sentence relies on "on the other hand" plus "and" to link ideas, a workable but fairly linear structure.

Yes, with structure, and badly without it. Eleven people at my studio reached a hard, good decision in a single meeting, because someone framed the question, everyone spoke once, and a vote followed; sixty people in my alley's group chat, by contrast, took a month to choose a paint colour and then let one person decide anyway. Large groups genuinely hold more knowledge and more perspectives than any individual, so on questions of fact or of what people actually want, they can be wiser than experts. What they lack is coherence — without a process, the loudest voices win, discussion loops endlessly, and responsibility quietly dissolves. So large groups reach good decisions when the question is clear, the process is fair, and someone is willing to end it.

I don't think the best decisions come from logic alone. The spreadsheet said I should take a certain contract, but I remembered my uncle, who lost a whole year to card games, and that memory told me it was risky. So I think the best decisions use both logic and emotion. Logic helps you compare options, but emotion helps you know what you really care about in the first place. Without emotion, logic can lead you to the wrong goal.

    • FCSo I think the best decisions use both logic and emotion. The thesis statement is delayed until after the example and introduced with the basic connector "so".
    • LRthat memory told me it was risky"Told me it was risky" is functional but plain. Honestly, I don't think it's really logic versus emotion at all. The spreadsheet said take the contract, but the memory of my uncle losing a whole year to card games said no, and that memory turned out to be the better judge. I'd say logic is great for comparing options once you already know what you value, but emotion is often how you find out what you value in the first place. Purely logical decisions can be reasoned very carefully toward completely the wrong goal, while purely emotional ones can just be reckless.

    • GRAPurely logical decisions can be reasoned very carefully toward completely the wrong goal, while purely emotional ones can just be reckless. The parallel structure "purely X... while purely Y..." is a solid complex sentence, though a 7.5 band would tighten the same idea into two shorter clauses joined by a semicolon instead, removing padding like "very carefully" and "completely".Cấu trúc song song "purely X... while purely Y..." là một câu phức vững chắc, tuy band 7.5 sẽ nén cùng ý đó thành hai mệnh đề ngắn hơn nối bằng dấu chấm phẩy, loại bỏ các từ đệm như "very carefully" và "completely".

The spreadsheet said take the contract; the memory of my uncle losing a year to card games said no, and the memory turned out to be the better analyst. I'd argue the best decisions use both, and that the split between logic and emotion is largely false. Logic excels at comparing options once you already know what you value, and it guards against panic and wishful thinking. Emotion is how you discover what you value in the first place, and it carries real information — unease about a deal is often a pattern recognised before it's understood. Purely logical decisions can be perfectly reasoned toward the wrong goal; purely emotional ones can be reckless. The good ones let feeling set the direction while reasoning checks the route.

The evacuation was unpopular but correct, while a road scheme a few years earlier was popular and ended up flooding a whole district, because everyone wanted the road and nobody wanted to hear about drainage. Public opinion tells leaders where the pain points are and what people will accept, and a leader who completely ignores it risks becoming either a tyrant or unemployed. But the public usually lacks the information and time that leaders have, so in the end, leaders should listen, explain honestly, and then decide.

    • FCBut the public usually lacks the information and time that leaders have, so in the end, leaders should listen, explain honestly, and then decide. The concluding sentence chains three ideas with "so... and then", giving reasonable but fairly linear cohesion; a 7.5 version achieves a similarly layered ending but attaches an extra participial clause for a more integrated finish.Câu kết nối ba ý bằng "so... and then", tạo sự liên kết hợp lý nhưng khá tuyến tính; bản 7.5 điểm đạt được phần kết có tính tầng lớp tương tự nhưng gắn thêm một mệnh đề phân từ để kết thúc hòa quyện hơn.
    • LRrisks becoming either a tyrant or unemployed"Unemployed" is a plain, almost blunt word choice; a near-equivalent at 7.5, "a former leader", achieves the same idea with a touch more wit and register-appropriate phrasing."Unemployed" là một lựa chọn từ đơn giản, gần như thẳng thừng; cách diễn đạt tương đương ở band 7.5, "a former leader", truyền tải cùng ý đó với chút dí dỏm và cách dùng từ phù hợp văn phong hơn.
    • GRAI'd say leaders should listen closely enough to understand what people need, but not so closely that they only do whatever is popularThe "enough... that... not so... that" correlative pattern shows solid complex grammar; a 7.5 answer opens with the same idea but strips it down to a bare fragment, requiring even more confident control of ellipsis.Kiểu tương quan "enough... that... not so... that" cho thấy ngữ pháp phức tạp vững chắc; bài 7.5 điểm mở đầu bằng cùng ý đó nhưng rút gọn thành một cụm từ trần trụi, đòi hỏi khả năng kiểm soát cấu trúc tỉnh lược tự tin hơn nữa.
    Band 7.5

The verbless fragment opener "Just enough to know where people are hurting, not so much that policy becomes whatever is popular this week" and the simile "its mood shifts like the weather" mark this as 7.5.Cách mở đầu bằng cụm từ không có động từ "Just enough to know where people are hurting, not so much that policy becomes whatever is popular this week" cùng phép so sánh "its mood shifts like the weather" đánh dấu đây là bài 7.5 điểm.

Just enough to know where people are hurting, not so much that policy becomes whatever is popular this week. The evacuation was unpopular yet correct; a road scheme a few years earlier was the opposite — popular, and it went on to flood an entire district, because everyone wanted the road and nobody wanted to hear about drainage. Public opinion is useful precisely because it reveals what matters to people and what they're willing to tolerate, and a leader who dismisses it outright tends to become either a tyrant or a former leader. Yet the public seldom has the information or the time a leader has, and its mood shifts like the weather. The honest approach is to listen, explain plainly, and then decide anyway, accepting that being right might still cost the next election.

    • FCJust enough to know where people are hurting, not so much that policy becomes whatever is popular this week.Opening with a verbless fragment that directly answers the question's "to what extent" phrasing shows an economical, confident cohesion device that lower bands avoid, both of which open instead with a fuller subject-verb sentence.Mở đầu bằng cụm từ không có động từ, trả lời trực tiếp cách diễn đạt "to what extent" của câu hỏi, cho thấy một thủ pháp liên kết súc tích, tự tin mà band thấp hơn tránh dùng, cả hai đều mở đầu bằng câu chủ ngữ-động từ đầy đủ hơn.
    • LRits mood shifts like the weatherThe simile "shifts like the weather" is vivid and idiomatic, more evocative than a flatter equivalent like "opinion changes"; it shows genuine figurative control rather than literal description.Phép so sánh "shifts like the weather" sống động và tự nhiên, gợi hình hơn nhiều so với cách nói đơn điệu tương đương như "opinion changes"; nó thể hiện khả năng dùng hình tượng thực sự chứ không chỉ miêu tả theo nghĩa đen.
    • GRAa road scheme a few years earlier was the opposite — popular, and it went on to flood an entire districtThe dash introduces an appositive contrast ("the opposite — popular") before the clause continues, a flexible punctuation-driven structure; a lower band would more simply write "but it was popular" as a separate clause joined with "but".Dấu gạch ngang dẫn nhập một sự đối lập kiểu đồng vị ("the opposite — popular") trước khi mệnh đề tiếp tục, một cấu trúc linh hoạt dựa vào dấu câu; band thấp hơn sẽ đơn giản viết "but it was popular" như một mệnh đề riêng nối bằng "but".
  9. 9. Should business leaders always consider the wider impact of their decisions on society?

    So sánh Band 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 cho câu hỏi này
    Band 6.5

Plain, separately stated sentences, closing with "The best leaders also think about what kind of world their company is helping to create," keep this answer at 6.5.Những câu văn đơn giản, trình bày riêng lẻ, kết thúc bằng "The best leaders also think about what kind of world their company is helping to create", khiến bài viết này dừng ở mức 6.5.

I think business leaders should think about the impact on society, and in my experience it is not really a sacrifice. When we turned down a gambling client, it cost us money for three months, but we got a better reputation, and that brought us better work later. Businesses need society, because society gives them workers, customers, and roads. Small businesses cannot always think about everything, but at least they should avoid causing clear harm. The best leaders also think about what kind of world their company is helping to create.

    • FCThe best leaders also think about what kind of world their company is helping to create. This final idea is added as a new, separate sentence at the end rather than being connected back to the earlier point about avoiding harm.
    • LRit cost us money for three monthsThis is a literal, low-precision way of expressing lost income. Higher bands use the more idiomatic, business-register phrase "cost us a quarter's income".Đây là cách diễn đạt việc mất thu nhập theo nghĩa đen, độ chính xác thấp. Band điểm cao hơn sẽ dùng cách nói tự nhiên, phù hợp văn phong kinh doanh hơn là "cost us a quarter's income".
    • GRABusinesses need society, because society gives them workers, customers, and roads.Repeating "society" as both subject and object in two clauses is grammatically correct but slightly clumsy. A 7.5 band avoids this repetition with a relative clause instead: "a society that supplies their workers, customers, roads and laws".Việc lặp lại "society" vừa làm chủ ngữ vừa làm tân ngữ trong hai mệnh đề đúng ngữ pháp nhưng hơi vụng về. Band 7.5 tránh sự lặp lại này bằng cách dùng mệnh đề quan hệ: "a society that supplies their workers, customers, roads and laws".
    Band 7.0

The hedge "Of course, 'always' is a strong word" and the phrase "lined up, just on different timescales" show 7.0's reflective, moderately complex style.Cách nói giảm nhẹ "Of course, 'always' is a strong word" cùng cụm từ "lined up, just on different timescales" thể hiện phong cách suy ngẫm, độ phức tạp vừa phải của band 7.0.

I'd say yes, and honestly it's less of a sacrifice than people assume. Turning down a gambling client cost us a quarter's income, but it gained us a reputation that brought better work afterwards, so the interests of the business and of society lined up, just on different timescales. Businesses exist inside a society that supplies their workers, customers, roads and laws, so damaging that society really means damaging their own foundation. Of course, 'always' is a strong word, and a small business under pressure can't weigh every decision like a philosopher, but at minimum leaders should avoid clear harm.

    • FCOf course, 'always' is a strong word, and a small business under pressure can't weigh every decision like a philosopher, but at minimum leaders should avoid clear harm. The hedge "Of course" concedes a counterpoint smoothly before returning to the main argument, a more sophisticated move than simply listing points; the sentence is, however, quite long and relies on repeated "and... but" coordination rather than the varied punctuation a 7.5 answer uses for the equivalent idea.Từ giảm nhẹ "Of course" nhượng bộ một điểm phản biện một cách trơn tru trước khi quay lại luận điểm chính, một thủ pháp tinh tế hơn so với việc chỉ liệt kê các ý; tuy nhiên câu này khá dài và dựa vào việc lặp lại cấu trúc song song "and... but" thay vì dùng dấu câu đa dạng như bài 7.5 điểm cho cùng một ý.
    • LRthe interests of the business and of society lined up, just on different timescales"Lined up... on different timescales" is a precise, slightly abstract way of expressing alignment, more developed than a plain "we got a better reputation"; it approaches but doesn't quite match the more vivid "turned out to be identical" phrasing used at 7.5."Lined up... on different timescales" là cách diễn đạt sự trùng khớp chính xác, hơi trừu tượng, phát triển hơn cách nói đơn giản "we got a better reputation"; nó gần đạt nhưng chưa hoàn toàn bằng cách diễn đạt sống động hơn "turned out to be identical" được dùng ở band 7.5.
    • GRAso damaging that society really means damaging their own foundationThe parallel repetition of "damaging" across a cause-and-effect clause is a controlled rhetorical device; a 7.5 band achieves a similar effect but with a relative clause and the adverb "quietly" inserted mid-clause, showing slightly more flexible word placement.
    Band 7.5

The vivid closing image "turned out to be identical, just running on different timescales" and the compact noun phrase "the leaders worth admiring" mark this as 7.5.Hình ảnh kết sống động "turned out to be identical, just running on different timescales" cùng cụm danh từ cô đọng "the leaders worth admiring" đánh dấu đây là bài 7.5 điểm.

Yes, and in my experience it's less of a sacrifice than it looks from the outside. Turning down a gambling client cost us a quarter's income and earned us a reputation that brought in better work — the interests of society and the business turned out to be identical, just running on different timescales. Businesses exist inside a society that supplies their workers, customers, roads and laws, and a company that damages that society is quietly damaging its own foundation. 'Always' is admittedly a strong word, and a small business under financial pressure can't weigh every decision like a philosopher. But the minimum is avoiding obvious harm, and the leaders worth admiring go further, asking what their company is making the world more like. Profit without that question tends to be short-lived.

    • FCthe interests of society and the business turned out to be identical, just running on different timescalesDescribing the two interests as "identical... on different timescales" resolves the whole argument in a single vivid image, a more unified and memorable closing move than a plainer "lined up" phrasing for the same idea.Việc mô tả hai lợi ích là "identical... on different timescales" giải quyết trọn vẹn cả lập luận trong một hình ảnh sống động, một cách kết thúc thống nhất, đáng nhớ hơn cách diễn đạt đơn giản "lined up" cho cùng một ý.
    • LRthe leaders worth admiring go further, asking what their company is making the world more like"The leaders worth admiring" is a compact, evaluative noun phrase doing the job that a lower band would need a full relative clause for, e.g. "leaders that I admire"; it shows economical, idiomatic control of English."The leaders worth admiring" là một cụm danh từ cô đọng, mang tính đánh giá, thực hiện chức năng mà band thấp hơn cần cả một mệnh đề quan hệ đầy đủ mới làm được, ví dụ "leaders that I admire"; nó thể hiện khả năng dùng tiếng Anh tự nhiên, súc tích.
    • GRAa company that damages that society is quietly damaging its own foundationInserting the adverb "quietly" between the auxiliary and main verb is a subtle, natural placement that shows fine-grained control of word order; lower bands tend to place adverbs only at clause boundaries.
