Band 6.5

The honest admission 'I expected to feel bored after twenty minutes, but I didn't' states the reaction plainly and directly, clear but without exploring why the feeling changed.Lời thú nhận thành thật 'I expected to feel bored after twenty minutes, but I didn't' nêu phản ứng một cách mộc mạc, trực tiếp, rõ ràng nhưng không khai thác lý do vì sao cảm giác lại thay đổi.

The sports event I want to talk about is a football match I watched at Hòa Xuân Stadium in Da Nang last year. It was a match between the local team, Da Nang FC, and a team from Ho Chi Minh City.

The match took place on a Saturday evening in October. My colleague Huy is a big fan of the local team, and he asked me to go with him because his usual friend was busy. I don't really follow football, but I said yes because I wanted to try something new.

I watched it live mainly because Huy kept telling me the atmosphere in the stadium is completely different from watching on TV. He was right. The stadium was full, and everyone around us was singing and shouting. There were drums and flags everywhere, and the noise never really stopped.

How I felt about it was honestly surprising. I expected to feel bored after twenty minutes, but I didn't. When Da Nang scored the winning goal near the end, the whole stadium jumped up at the same time, and I found myself jumping too. I still don't understand football very well, but I understood why people love going to matches. Huy has already asked me to go again next season, and I think I will.

  • GRAI don't really follow football, but I said yes because I wanted to try something new"I don't really follow football, but I said yes because I wanted to try something new" stacks a "but" contrast and a "because" reason in one sentence, both accurate and both basic subordination, without any further embedding. That's the Band 6.5 grammar profile: two simple connecting devices used correctly together, rather than one more ambitious structure doing the same job.“I don't really follow football, but I said yes because I wanted to try something new” xếp chồng một sự tương phản “but” và một lý do “because” trong một câu, cả hai đều chính xác và đều là sự phụ thuộc cơ bản, không có sự lồng ghép nào thêm.
  • LReveryone around us was singing and shouting"Everyone around us was singing and shouting" pairs two plain, common verbs to describe the stadium atmosphere, with no more vivid or specific word attempted, such as "roaring" or "chanting", even though the scene (a packed stadium, drums, flags) would support livelier language.
  • FCI still don't understand football very well, but I understood why people love going to matchesThe closing sentence states the outcome directly through a plain "but" contrast, admitting continued ignorance of football alongside a new understanding of its appeal, without exploring what specifically about the goal or the crowd caused that shift.
Band 7.0

The participial phrase in 'the whole crowd seemed to lean forward at the same time, willing them to come back' adds vivid detail through a comfortable complex structure, developing the scene fluently.Cụm phân từ trong câu 'the whole crowd seemed to lean forward at the same time, willing them to come back' bổ sung chi tiết sống động thông qua một cấu trúc phức được sử dụng thoải mái, phát triển khung cảnh một cách trôi chảy.

The sports event I'd like to talk about is a beach volleyball tournament I watched at My Khe Beach last summer, along with my workmate Tuan.

The tournament took place over a weekend in July, and I went along on the Sunday afternoon, mainly because Tuan's younger brother was playing in one of the teams. I don't usually follow volleyball at all, but I went to support him, and I ended up staying for almost the whole afternoon.

I watched it live because Tuan insisted it was completely different from watching sport on TV, and I think he was right. There was a small crowd sitting right on the sand, close enough to hear the players shouting to each other, and every good point got an immediate reaction from everyone around us, not just polite clapping like you'd get watching at home.

How I felt about it was, honestly, more excited than I expected. For the first game or two, I was mostly just chatting with Tuan and half-watching, but once the final got close, I found myself really paying attention. Tuan's brother's team was down by a couple of points late in the deciding set, and the whole crowd seemed to lean forward at the same time, willing them to come back.

They actually managed to turn it around and won the final point right in front of us, and everyone on the beach cheered like they'd personally won something. Tuan was practically shouting his brother's name. I still don't know much about volleyball rules, but that afternoon made me understand why people bother going to watch sport in person instead of just checking the score online afterwards.

  • GRAthe whole crowd seemed to lean forward at the same time, willing them to come backThe participial phrase 'willing them to come back' is attached to the main clause without a connecting word, adding the crowd's emotional state economically rather than spelling it out in a separate sentence like 'They wanted the team to come back' -- the comfortable, accurate complexity the 7.0 grammar descriptor targets. It captures the tension of the deciding set at the beach volleyball final concretely, through action, rather than through a generic adjective like 'exciting'.Cụm phân từ 'willing them to come back' được gắn vào mệnh đề chính mà không cần từ nối, bổ sung trạng thái cảm xúc của đám đông một cách súc tích thay vì diễn giải rõ ràng trong một câu riêng biệt như 'They wanted the team to come back' -- đây là độ phức tạp thoải mái, chính xác mà tiêu chí ngữ pháp Band 7.0 nhắm tới.
  • LReveryone on the beach cheered like they'd personally won somethingThe simile 'like they'd personally won something' conveys the crowd's collective joy more vividly than a plain adjective such as 'loudly' or 'happily', which is the kind of natural, flexible collocation the 7.0 lexical descriptor rewards without reaching for anything unusual. It also implies the speaker's own surprise at how invested the crowd became, reinforcing the point made a few lines later about live sport being different from watching on TV.Phép so sánh 'like they'd personally won something' truyền tải niềm vui tập thể của đám đông một cách sống động hơn so với một tính từ đơn giản như 'loudly' hay 'happily', đây là kiểu collocation tự nhiên, linh hoạt mà tiêu chí từ vựng Band 7.0 đánh giá cao mà không cần vươn tới điều gì khác thường.
  • GRAthat afternoon made me understand why people bother going to watch sport in person instead of just checking the score online afterwardsThis closing sentence embeds a why-clause inside the main clause and then extends it with an 'instead of' contrast comparing live attendance to checking scores online, producing a genuinely complex but accurate sentence that ties the whole anecdote to a general conclusion. This is the comfortable-but-developed complexity the 7.0 grammar descriptor describes, one step short of the denser, multi-clause layering a 7.5 answer would attempt for the same closing thought.Câu kết này lồng một mệnh đề "why" vào bên trong mệnh đề chính, rồi mở rộng thêm bằng một sự đối lập 'instead of' so sánh việc xem trực tiếp với việc kiểm tra tỷ số trực tuyến, tạo ra một câu thực sự phức tạp nhưng vẫn chính xác, gắn kết toàn bộ giai thoại với một kết luận chung.
Band 7.5

The precise reflective closing 'for about ninety seconds, several thousand strangers on a wall wanted the same thing' distils the whole experience into one abstract insight, distinctly Band 7.5.Câu kết mang tính suy ngẫm, chính xác 'for about ninety seconds, several thousand strangers on a wall wanted the same thing' chắt lọc toàn bộ trải nghiệm thành một nhận thức trừu tượng, rõ ràng ở mức Band 7.5.

The sports event I'd describe is the dragon-boat racing on the Hàn River in Da Nang, which happens on National Day, the second of September, and which I watched last year from the riverbank with my niece, who was eleven.

The event itself is a series of races between long wooden boats, each with a carved dragon's head, about forty paddlers, a steersman and a drummer who sets the rhythm. The crews come from the fishing villages and districts around the city, and each has its own colours and supporters. The races run in heats through the morning along a straight course in front of the city centre, with a final around noon.

Where we watched from was the eastern bank, standing on a wall we'd claimed at seven in the morning, with several thousand other people and a smell of grilled corn from the stalls behind us.

Why I watched it live was mostly my niece, but also because it's a thing that doesn't really exist on a screen. In person, you feel the drums in your chest, you hear forty men shout on every stroke, and the boats come towards you so fast that the crowd leans back.

How I felt was surprised by my own excitement. I don't follow sport, and I'd expected to enjoy the atmosphere and be bored by the racing. Instead, in the final, a crew from a small fishing village that nobody around us had backed came from third place in the last hundred metres and won by about a boat's length, and I found myself shouting with everyone else. My niece was hoarse. She's decided she wants to be a drummer on a boat, which her mother has taken up with the school. It was the first time I understood why people follow a team: for about ninety seconds, several thousand strangers on a wall wanted the same thing.

  • LRthe crowd leans backThis is a precise physical detail — the whole crowd's collective, instinctive flinch — chosen instead of a more generic statement like "it was exciting to watch," and it conveys tension economically through action rather than adjectives. This is the kind of concrete, well-selected vocabulary the 7.5 tier rewards under Lexical Resource; a 7.0 answer would be more likely to describe the excitement directly, e.g. "it was really thrilling to watch the boats come so close."
  • GRAa crew from a small fishing village that nobody around us had backed came from third placeThis long sentence embeds a relative clause ("that nobody around us had backed") inside the subject noun phrase before the main verb even arrives, which takes real control to keep grammatically accurate over that distance. That kind of extended, embedded complexity — not just a longer sentence, but one with a genuine structural challenge in the middle — is what the 7.5 tier means by "genuine grammatical range"; a 7.0 answer would more likely break this into two shorter sentences.
  • LRfor about ninety seconds, several thousand strangers on a wall wanted the same thingThis closing line distils the whole scene into one abstract, almost philosophical observation about shared emotion among strangers, choosing precise, deliberately chosen words ("strangers," "wanted the same thing") over a simpler summary like "everyone was excited together." Ending on this kind of compressed, reflective insight, rather than a plain factual wrap-up, is the evaluative move the 7.5 tier rewards beyond description; a 7.0 answer would more likely close with something more literal, such as "it was a really enjoyable day."

Football is definitely the most popular sport, and it is not close. When the national team plays an important match, the streets in Da Nang become empty and every cafe turns its TV to the door. After football, people also like sports Vietnam is good at, like women's football, volleyball, badminton and martial arts. There are also traditional events like boat racing and wrestling at village festivals, which feel like community festivals too. The Olympics get attention when a Vietnamese athlete has a chance. Young people are also starting to follow basketball and esports.

At the riverbank, I felt the drums and the crowd leaning back as the boats came in, and no screen could give me that feeling. But I only understood how the fishing village team actually won when I watched the replay later and saw the last part of the race from above. Live events give atmosphere and a sense of being part of something, while TV gives a better view and explanation. For events that matter to you, I think you should go.

Important in both directions, and arguably the losses matter more. My nephew won a running race last year and turned thoroughly insufferable for a week; two months on, he lost one badly and, tears notwithstanding, learned something about effort and about other people that the winning never quite managed to teach him. Competition hands young people a measure of themselves, a reason to practise, pressure experienced in a safe, contained form. It builds confidence when the contest is fair and the child sometimes wins; it erodes confidence when the child always loses, or when adults care too much. The right dose is regular, low-stakes and varied, so every child wins at something.

The 6.5 answer gives a direct "No" opinion with one plain contrasting example (the two classmates), closing with a simple final sentence linking cooperation and trust with "and".Bài mẫu 6.5 điểm đưa ra quan điểm "No" trực tiếp kèm theo một ví dụ đối lập đơn giản (hai người bạn học), kết thúc bằng một câu kết đơn giản nối sự hợp tác và lòng tin bằng "and".

No, I do not think so, and I have seen proof of this. The most competitive designer in my class treated every colleague like a rival, won many prizes, but by the time he was thirty he had damaged every professional relationship he had. The calmer classmate, who shared her work and helped others, now runs a studio of twenty people. Being competitive can drive effort and ambition, which are real advantages. But most success depends on cooperation and trust, and overly competitive people can destroy that.

    Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer opens with a direct "I do not think so" and gives one plain example about the losing teams, closing with a simple "So" summary of the position.Bài mẫu 6.5 điểm mở đầu bằng "I do not think so" trực tiếp và đưa ra một ví dụ đơn giản về các đội thua cuộc, kết thúc bằng một câu tổng kết đơn giản "So" để khái quát lập trường.

I do not think so. After the final, the losing teams were drinking beer with the winners, even though they had spent the whole morning trying to beat each other, which shows competition with rules can actually bring people together. Peace does not need the absence of rivalry, it needs rivalry to be controlled and not turn into violence. Sport, trade and science are good outlets for competitive feelings. What really threatens peace is competition without any limits, like fighting over land with weapons. So I think the goal is to keep competition within fair rules.

    • FCSo I think the goal is to keep competition within fair rulesThe plain "So" opener on this closing sentence delivers the final restatement in the simplest possible way, typical of 6.5's direct, unembellished coherence.
    • LRSport, trade and science are good outlets for competitive feelings"Good outlets for competitive feelings" is plain, workable phrasing; a higher band would reach for a more vivid phrase like "exactly those channels", which the 7.0/7.5 versions use."Good outlets for competitive feelings" là cách diễn đạt đơn giản, khả dụng; bài điểm cao hơn sẽ chọn một cách diễn đạt sinh động hơn như "exactly those channels", được dùng ở phiên bản 7.0/7.5 điểm.
    • GRAAfter the final, the losing teams were drinking beer with the winners, even though they had spent the whole morning trying to beat each other, which shows competition with rules can actually bring people together. This long sentence chains ideas together with "even though" and "which", a workable but somewhat mechanical structure compared to the more varied phrasing at higher bands.Câu dài này nối các ý lại với nhau bằng "even though" và "which", một cấu trúc khả dụng nhưng hơi máy móc so với cách diễn đạt đa dạng hơn ở các bài điểm cao hơn.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer opens with the reflective clause "and the riverbank suggested why" and uses a participial phrase, "having spent the whole morning trying to beat them", a step beyond the plainer, fuller clauses of the 6.5 answer.Bài mẫu 7.0 điểm mở đầu bằng mệnh đề mang tính suy ngẫm "and the riverbank suggested why" và dùng cụm phân từ "having spent the whole morning trying to beat them", tiến thêm một bước so với các mệnh đề đơn giản, đầy đủ hơn của bài 6.5 điểm.

I don't think so, and the riverbank suggested why. An hour after the final, the losing crews were drinking beer with the winners, having spent the whole morning trying to beat them — competition with rules and respect brings people together rather than apart. Peace doesn't require the absence of rivalry; it requires that rivalry be channelled into things that don't kill anyone. Sport, trade and science are exactly those channels, and a world without them would still have ambition with nowhere to go. What actually threatens peace is competition without limits, for territory, for domination, with weapons.

    • LRcompetition with rules and respect brings people together rather than apart"Brings people together rather than apart" is a more precise contrastive phrase than the vaguer "can actually bring people together" used at 6.5."Brings people together rather than apart" là một cụm từ đối lập chính xác hơn so với "can actually bring people together" mơ hồ hơn được dùng ở bài 6.5 điểm.
    • GRAhaving spent the whole morning trying to beat themThis participial phrase compresses the "even though they had spent..." clause used at 6.5 into a more economical construction, folding the concession directly into the sentence.Cụm phân từ này nén mệnh đề "even though they had spent..."
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer closes with the wry, idiomatic final sentence "Eliminating it entirely would be both impossible and, I suspect, deadly boring", the kind of small evaluative closing touch expected at the top band.Bài mẫu 7.5 điểm kết thúc bằng câu kết dí dỏm, đậm chất thành ngữ "Eliminating it entirely would be both impossible and, I suspect, deadly boring", kiểu nét kết thúc nhỏ mang tính đánh giá được kỳ vọng ở mức điểm cao nhất.

I don't think so, and the riverbank hinted at why. An hour after the final, the losing crews were sharing beer with the very people they'd spent the morning trying to beat — competition bound by rules and mutual respect draws people together rather than apart. Peace doesn't demand the absence of rivalry; it demands that rivalry be channelled somewhere that doesn't get anyone killed. Sport, trade and science are precisely those channels, and a world stripped of them would still harbour ambition and grievance with nowhere left to go. What genuinely threatens peace is competition without limits — over territory, over domination, fought with weapons. Eliminating it entirely would be both impossible and, I suspect, deadly boring.

    • FCEliminating it entirely would be both impossible and, I suspect, deadly boringThis wry, understated closing sentence adds an evaluative touch entirely absent from the flatter, tidier endings of the lower bands, showing confident, almost essay-like command of tone.Câu kết dí dỏm, nói giảm này thêm vào một nét đánh giá hoàn toàn vắng bóng ở những phần kết đơn điệu, gọn gàng hơn của các bài điểm thấp hơn, cho thấy khả năng làm chủ giọng điệu tự tin, gần như mang tính văn viết.
