Đề bài (cue card)

Describe a time when you had to listen to someone talking, but you weren't very interested.

You should say:

  • Who was talking
  • What the person was talking about
  • Why you had to listen to this person
  • And explain why you weren't very interested in what this person was talking about.

Band 6.5

The plain, direct statement 'I knew this would be a long lunch' sets up the story with simple, high-frequency vocabulary and minimal elaboration, typical of Band 6.5.Câu trực tiếp, đơn giản 'I knew this would be a long lunch' mở đầu câu chuyện bằng từ vựng thông dụng, đơn giản và ít triển khai chi tiết - đặc trưng của Band 6.5.

A clear example of this happened a few months ago, during lunch at my office. My colleague Quan sat next to me in the pantry, and he started talking about stock market investing. I've never been interested in stocks or finance, so I knew this would be a long lunch.

Quan is usually quiet, but once he starts talking about investing, he doesn't really stop. He explained which companies he had bought shares in, how the prices moved that week, and some strategy he read about online. Honestly, after a few minutes I understood almost nothing, because I don't know the vocabulary at all.

I had to keep listening mainly because we were sitting at the same small table, and it would have felt rude to just put on my headphones or walk away. Also, he seemed really excited to share it, and I didn't want to make him feel ignored, since we still have to work together every day.

In the end, I nodded a lot and asked a few simple questions just to be polite. I still don't understand stocks, but I did learn that Quan is much more passionate about money than I expected. Sometimes you just have to be a patient listener at work.

  • LRI don't know the vocabulary at allThe explanation for confusion relies on the plainest possible phrasing — 'I don't know the vocabulary' — rather than a more specific description of what exactly was confusing about the stock-market talk. This kind of simple, direct explanation without further lexical variation is characteristic of Band 6.5's plain vocabulary choices. It still gives a clear, honest reason for why Quan's explanation of shares and strategies went over the speaker's head, as described just before.Lời giải thích cho sự bối rối dựa vào cách diễn đạt đơn giản nhất có thể — 'I don't know the vocabulary' — thay vì một mô tả cụ thể hơn về chính xác điều gì đã gây bối rối trong cuộc trò chuyện về thị trường chứng khoán.
  • GRAit would have felt rude to just put on my headphones or walk awayThe clause uses a basic conditional-style structure ('it would have felt rude to...') correctly, but without adding further complexity such as a reason clause explaining exactly why headphones specifically would have seemed rude in this setting. This accurate but single-layer complex structure, used just once rather than combined with anything else, is characteristic of Band 6.5 grammar. It still communicates the social obligation felt at the lunch table clearly and naturally.Mệnh đề này sử dụng chính xác một cấu trúc kiểu điều kiện cơ bản ('it would have felt rude to...'), nhưng không thêm vào sự phức tạp nào khác, chẳng hạn một mệnh đề lý do giải thích chính xác vì sao đeo tai nghe cụ thể lại có vẻ bất lịch sự trong bối cảnh này.
  • FCSometimes you just have to be a patient listener at work. The story ends with a generalised, slightly proverbial-sounding statement, but one delivered plainly rather than with any genuine personal reflection on the specific situation with Quan. This flat, somewhat formulaic wrap-up is typical of how Band 6.5 answers close a Part 2 story — a recognisable ending move, but without the deeper self-aware observation a 7.5 answer might add.
Band 7.0

The answer develops the story with a specific concrete example ('a story about a neighbour who apparently cured his back pain') and closes with a natural reflective comment, giving it the fluent, moderately developed feel of Band 7.0.Câu trả lời triển khai câu chuyện bằng một ví dụ cụ thể ('a story about a neighbour who apparently cured his back pain') và kết thúc bằng một nhận xét mang tính suy ngẫm tự nhiên, tạo nên cảm giác trôi chảy, được triển khai ở mức độ vừa phải, đặc trưng của Band 7.0.

A situation like this happened a couple of months ago in the lobby of my apartment building. I was waiting for the lift when my neighbour, Mrs. Lan, who's probably in her sixties, started chatting to me about traditional herbal medicine. I've never really believed in that kind of thing, so I could already tell it was going to be a long wait.

Mrs. Lan is normally quite quiet, but once she gets talking about herbs and remedies, she doesn't stop easily. She told me about different leaves you can boil for a cold, which roots are good for your liver, and a story about a neighbour who apparently cured his back pain just by drinking a certain tea every morning. Honestly, after a few minutes I had pretty much lost interest, because it's just not something I know anything about or particularly want to.

I had to keep listening mainly because we live on the same floor, and I see her almost every day, so it would have felt awkward to just cut her off or walk away. She also seemed genuinely excited to share what she knew, and I didn't want to come across as rude, especially since she's always been friendly to me.

In the end, I nodded along and asked a couple of simple questions, mostly just to be polite. I still don't know much more about herbal medicine than before, but I did learn that Mrs. Lan is a lot more knowledgeable, and a lot more talkative, than I ever expected. I guess sometimes being a good neighbour just means being a patient listener.

  • LRshe doesn't stop easily'Doesn't stop easily' is a natural, colloquial way of describing someone who talks at length, chosen instead of a flatter phrase like 'she talks a lot'. This kind of everyday idiomatic colour, used casually rather than as a showcased expression, is exactly the flexible-but-common vocabulary Band 7.0 targets. It sets up, with a light touch of humour, the long list of herbal remedies that Mrs. Lan goes on to describe in the following sentences.'Doesn't stop easily' là một cách thông tục, tự nhiên để mô tả một người nói chuyện dài dòng, được chọn thay vì một cụm trơn tru hơn như 'she talks a lot'.
  • FCa story about a neighbour who apparently cured his back pain just by drinking a certain tea every morningRather than a vague summary like 'she told me some stories', the speaker gives one specific, concrete example — the neighbour's tea-cured back pain — anchoring the general claim about Mrs. Lan's talkativeness in real detail. This kind of single concrete example supporting a general statement is exactly the reason-plus-example development Band 7.0 rewards, in contrast to a 6.5 answer that might stay at the level of vague generalisation. It also adds a touch of gentle skepticism ('apparently') that hints at the speaker's own disbelief in herbal medicine, mentioned earlier.
  • GRAso it would have felt awkward to just cut her off or walk awayThe result clause 'so it would have felt awkward...' uses the conditional perfect ('would have felt') to express a hypothetical reaction rather than a simple present or past tense, combined with two coordinated verb options ('cut her off or walk away'). This kind of accurate hypothetical structure, layered with coordination, is part of the comfortable grammar range Band 7.0 targets, more ambitious than a plain 'so I didn't leave' a 6.5 answer might use. It explains the social pressure behind staying polite, tying directly to the same-floor neighbour relationship described in the same sentence.Mệnh đề kết quả 'so it would have felt awkward...' dùng thì điều kiện hoàn thành ('would have felt') để diễn tả một phản ứng giả định thay vì thì hiện tại hoặc quá khứ đơn giản, kết hợp với hai lựa chọn động từ được phối hợp ('cut her off or walk away').
Band 7.5

The idiomatic phrase 'not your cup of tea' and the cultural observation about Vietnamese politeness toward elders show the natural figurative language and reflective depth typical of Band 7.5.Thành ngữ 'not your cup of tea' cùng nhận xét mang tính văn hóa về sự lễ phép của người Việt đối với người lớn tuổi cho thấy ngôn ngữ hình tượng tự nhiên và chiều sâu suy ngẫm đặc trưng của Band 7.5.

I'd say a clear example of this happened last year, when I was visiting my uncle's restaurant in Hue for a family lunch. My uncle's old friend, Mr. Hoa, joined us for the meal. He's quite a character-very chatty and passionate about gardening. The thing is, I've never been interested in plants or gardening at all. I can barely keep a cactus alive in my apartment.

While we were waiting for the food, Mr. Hoa started telling me in detail about the different types of orchids he grows and all the tricks he uses to keep them healthy. He went on about sunlight, special fertilizers, and even described the history of a particular species he'd managed to get from a friend in Quang Tri. Honestly, after about five minutes, my mind started drifting, but I tried to keep smiling and nodding because my uncle clearly wanted to include me in the conversation.

The reason I felt I had to keep listening was partly out of respect for both my uncle and his friend. In Vietnamese culture, it's important to be polite to older people, even if the topic is not your cup of tea. Also, we were all sitting close together at a small table, so it would have been pretty rude to just pull out my phone or change the subject.

In the end, I didn't learn to love gardening, but I did pick up a few random facts about orchids. I guess sometimes you just need to be a good listener, even if you're not into the topic, especially at family gatherings.

  • LRnot your cup of tea'Not your cup of tea' is a well-known idiom used accurately and naturally to describe a topic that doesn't interest someone, deployed here without over-signalling that it's a set phrase. Using an idiom this fluently, folded into a longer sentence about cultural respect rather than standing alone as a showcase phrase, is exactly the figurative touch Band 7.5 lexical resource calls for. It also fits the register of the sentence perfectly, softening what could otherwise be a blunt admission of boredom.'Not your cup of tea' là một thành ngữ quen thuộc được dùng chính xác và tự nhiên để mô tả một chủ đề không khiến ai đó hứng thú, được triển khai ở đây mà không báo hiệu quá mức rằng đó là một cụm cố định.
  • FCIn Vietnamese culture, it's important to be polite to older people, even if the topic is not your cup of tea.Rather than simply narrating what happened, the speaker steps back to make a genuine cultural observation about why politeness mattered in that specific family context — this is real reflection, not just description of events. That kind of evaluative, generalising comment woven into the narrative is what gives Band 7.5 answers their depth, compared with a 7.0 answer that would more likely just state 'I had to be polite' without this cultural framing. It also explains, more convincingly than a flat statement would, why the speaker kept listening despite losing interest after five minutes.
  • GRAHe went on about sunlight, special fertilizers, and even described the history of a particular species he'd managed to get from a friend in Quang Tri.The sentence coordinates two different verb phrases ('went on about... and even described...') and then embeds a relative clause with a past perfect verb form ('he'd managed to get') inside the second one, building real structural variety within a single long sentence. This kind of multi-part complexity — coordination plus an embedded, correctly tensed relative clause — sustained without error is what marks Band 7.5 grammar as more varied than the comfortable-but-simpler complex sentences typical of 7.0. It also gives Mr. Hoa's monologue a sense of genuine, rambling detail, which supports the story's comic tone.Câu này phối hợp hai cụm động từ khác nhau ('went on about... and even described...') rồi lồng một mệnh đề quan hệ dùng thì quá khứ hoàn thành ('he'd managed to get') vào bên trong cụm thứ hai, tạo ra sự đa dạng cấu trúc thực sự trong một câu dài duy nhất.

    Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer gives a direct list of topics ("university or work, relationships... social media") supported by one family example, using plain connectors like "or" and "also".Câu trả lời 6.5 liệt kê trực tiếp các chủ đề ('university or work, relationships... social media'), hỗ trợ bằng một ví dụ về gia đình, dùng những từ nối đơn giản như 'or' và 'also' xuyên suốt.

Mostly university or work, relationships, and whatever is trending on social media. When I talk with my younger sister, who is still at university in Ho Chi Minh City, we usually talk about her coursework stress or whatever show she is watching on TikTok. Travel plans also come up a lot with people my age, since everyone compares where to visit next. Young people also talk more openly about mental health now than older generations did. Compared to older relatives, the topics feel more personal and less about practical things like money.

    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer uses the natural verb "swing between" instead of a plain "talk about", and adds the reflective aside "which is honestly a positive shift", giving the answer more texture than the flatter 6.5 version.Câu trả lời 7.0 dùng động từ tự nhiên 'swing between' thay cho 'talk about' đơn giản, và thêm lời chêm mang tính suy ngẫm 'which is honestly a positive shift', có chiều sâu hơn so với bản 6.5 bằng phẳng hơn.

It depends on the person, but for me, yes. My uncle, who runs a small restaurant in Hue, tells stories about running the business that I actually find interesting, even though the topic itself, like supplier prices, is not something I would normally care about. Young people sometimes assume older generations will feel repetitive or boring, but many actually have specific, useful knowledge if you ask the right questions. The pace of the conversation can feel different, though, since older relatives sometimes go off on long stories. It depends less on age and more on real curiosity from both sides.

My uncle, who runs a small restaurant back in Hue, tells stories about running the business that I find genuinely interesting, even though the topic itself, like supplier prices or staff scheduling, isn't something I'd normally care about. I think younger people sometimes assume conversations with older generations will feel repetitive or preachy, but a lot of older people actually have really specific, practical knowledge worth hearing if you ask the right questions. That said, the pace of conversation can feel different, since older relatives sometimes go off on long tangents. Yes, to a point, because agreeing on everything can get a little boring after a while. Different opinions force both people to explain their reasoning instead of just nodding along, and this often leads somewhere more interesting than either person expected. I remember a lively discussion with a client about a colour scheme, where we disagreed at first, but working through the reasoning made the design better than either of us had planned alone. There is a limit, though, because when disagreement becomes personal, or nobody listens, it stops being interesting and becomes frustrating. Respectful disagreement is the key part.

Eye contact is the obvious one, along with small nods or follow-up questions that show they're actually processing what you're saying rather than just waiting for their turn to talk. My friend Vy is someone I'd say is genuinely good at this — when we talk, she puts her phone face-down and actually reacts to specific details I mentioned earlier, which honestly makes a noticeable difference. On the other hand, someone glancing at their phone or giving vague, generic responses is a pretty clear sign their attention is elsewhere. I'm more of a listener myself by nature, so I notice these small signals in others fairly easily.

Not usually, no. People who talk about themselves all the time tend to use conversations mainly as a chance to speak, rather than to actually exchange ideas, which leaves little space for absorbing what the other person says. I am more the opposite type, more comfortable listening than dominating a conversation, and the best listeners tend to ask more questions than they answer. That said, it is not an absolute rule, since some people talk a lot because they are naturally expressive, not because they are ignoring you. But generally, constant self-focused talking does match with weaker listening habits.

Enormously, I think. Instant messaging apps like Zalo have basically replaced phone calls for most everyday conversations here, since it is quicker and less intrusive than calling someone directly. Video calls have also made distance much less of a barrier. I speak with my parents back in Hue almost every evening through video chat, which was not really practical before smartphones existed. Communication has also become more fragmented in a way, with short messages and voice notes replacing longer, more thoughtful conversations sometimes. On the positive side, it has made staying in touch easier across busy schedules and different cities.

Definitely, and I've noticed this quite clearly within my own family. Younger people tend to lean on abbreviations, slang and emojis when texting, almost like a separate shorthand language, while older relatives usually write full, formal sentences even in a casual chat app. My grandmother, for instance, still types out complete greetings and punctuation in every single Zalo message, which always makes me smile a little compared to how quickly I fire back with shortcuts. Younger people also switch tone constantly depending on the platform, playful on social media and formal in emails, whereas older generations tend to keep one consistent style everywhere. It reflects, I think, different levels of comfort with digital spaces built up over very different lifetimes.

Yes, definitely. Face-to-face conversation carries things text or video calls cannot fully capture, like body language or shared physical space. In my job, most client communication now happens over video calls, but whenever I do get the chance to meet a client in person, the conversation always feels more productive, probably because misunderstandings get caught and fixed much faster. Personal conversations, like discussing a problem with a friend, also feel more real in person than on a screen. So technology has made staying connected easier, but it cannot fully replace being in the same room as someone.

Face-to-face conversation carries things text or video calls can't fully capture, like subtle body language or shared physical space. I think young people today like to talk about things that feel relevant to their daily lives, like trends on TikTok, new gadgets, or good food spots. Last weekend at a coffee shop near Dragon Bridge, my colleague Khánh talked non-stop about cryptocurrency and NFTs for almost half an hour. Honestly, I found it hard to follow because that world just isn't my thing. But some of our younger teammates were really engaged and shared their own experiences with trading apps. It made me realise technology and finance are quite popular topics, at least among the people I know, though others still prefer music, fashion, or movies.

Style and tools both, and the gap is bigger than people admit. My grandmother in Hue still prefers face-to-face conversations, or the landline if she must; my sister, studying in Ho Chi Minh City, basically lives on Zalo and TikTok. Helping my grandmother video call her last Tet said it all — she kept asking anxiously if her hair looked okay, while my sister just laughed and layered on silly filters without a second thought. Older people tend to value longer, more considered conversations, even about serious things; younger people default to direct, informal exchanges, emojis and memes included, regardless of how serious the topic actually is. Some older folks buck the trend, of course, but the generation gap is real enough to notice most days.

Honestly, I tried to listen, but my mind kept wandering because I couldn't relate to that environment at all, my job now is all about flexibility and digital tools.

    • FCit usually shows in how they interact and give feedback throughout the conversationThe generalising phrase 'it usually shows' pulls the answer back from the specific anecdote just given to the general claim the question actually asked, a small but necessary return to the main point. A 6.5 answer might leave the anecdote to stand alone without this explicit link back; a 7.5 answer might integrate the two more seamlessly. Here the plain return-to-the-question move keeps the answer on-topic, typical of Band 7.0's adequate coherence.Cụm từ khái quát 'it usually shows' kéo câu trả lời từ câu chuyện cụ thể vừa kể trở về luận điểm chung mà câu hỏi thực sự yêu cầu, một sự quay lại nhỏ nhưng cần thiết. Body language, mostly, and the way someone actually responds. Eye contact held rather than glanced away from, the odd nod, a reaction that fits what you just said — these are the real tells. I remember explaining some design basics to a new intern, An, last month; she had no background in tech at all, but she kept pausing to ask genuinely thoughtful questions and even echoed a few of my points back to check she'd understood, which is about as clear a signal as you get. People can fake attentiveness, of course, nodding along out of politeness rather than interest, but real engagement tends to show itself in the give and take of the conversation, not just the nodding.

Yes, I'd say people these days are definitely less patient when listening, especially compared to five or ten years ago. Just last week at my office, one of our developers, Huy, was explaining the details of a new API update during a team meeting. I noticed that after about ten minutes, most people, including myself, were already checking notifications or scribbling in notebooks rather than paying full attention. It wasn't that Huy was boring, but with so many digital distractions, it's just harder to focus for long stretches. I think with apps like TikTok and constant message pings, our attention spans are shrinking. That said, in one-on-one conversations or serious topics, people still make more of an effort.

Adds "For example" before the story, and extends the closing with "in my experience" for a fuller finish.Thêm 'For example' trước câu chuyện, và mở rộng phần kết bằng 'in my experience' để có một kết thúc đầy đủ hơn.

Yes, I'd say people these days are definitely less patient when listening, especially compared to even five or ten years ago. For example, just last week at my office, one of our developers, Huy, was explaining the details of a new API update during a team meeting. I noticed that after about ten minutes, most people, including myself honestly, were already checking notifications or scribbling in notebooks rather than paying full attention. It wasn't that Huy was boring, but with so many digital distractions, it's just harder to focus for long stretches. I think with apps like TikTok and constant message pings, our attention spans are shrinking, and we expect information to be delivered faster and more directly. That said, there are still situations, like one-on-one conversations or serious topics, where people make more of an effort, in my experience.

    • FCmost people, including myself honestly, were already checking notifications or scribbling in notebooks rather than paying full attentionThe hedge "honestly" is inserted mid-clause, giving a spoken, slightly self-deprecating tone. The 7.5 band replaces this with "I'll admit" set off by dashes, a similarly self-deprecating but more integrated structural device.Từ giảm nhẹ 'honestly' được chèn vào giữa mệnh đề, tạo giọng điệu khẩu ngữ, hơi tự trào.
    • LRour attention spans are shrinking, and we expect information to be delivered faster and more directlyA reasonably developed closing claim. The 7.5 band reframes this with the more vivid image "information delivered in six-second bursts", a concrete, almost visual way of making the same point about shrinking attention.Một luận điểm kết thúc khá phát triển.
    • GRAthere are still situations, like one-on-one conversations or serious topics, where people make more of an effort, in my experienceA relative clause with "where", correct and fluent, closed with the hedge "in my experience". The 7.5 band removes the hedge and instead closes on the idiomatic image "everything else seems to be fighting for scraps", a more vivid, unhedged final statement.Một mệnh đề quan hệ dùng 'where', đúng và trôi chảy, kết thúc bằng từ giảm nhẹ 'in my experience'. Band 7.5 bỏ từ giảm nhẹ này, thay vào đó kết thúc bằng hình ảnh mang tính thành ngữ 'everything else seems to be fighting for scraps', một phát biểu kết thúc sinh động hơn, không cần giảm nhẹ.
    Band 7.5

Drops "I'd say" for the compact "Yes, noticeably so", and closes with the idiomatic image of everything else "fighting for scraps" instead of a plain restatement.Bỏ 'I'd say', thay bằng 'Yes, noticeably so' cô đọng, và kết thúc bằng hình ảnh mang tính thành ngữ — mọi thứ khác đang 'fighting for scraps', thay vì một câu nhắc lại đơn giản.

Yes, noticeably so, even compared to five or ten years ago. Just last week, one of our developers, Huy, was walking the team through a new API update, and by about the ten-minute mark, most of us — myself included, I'll admit — had drifted off into checking notifications or scribbling half-attentive notes. It wasn't that Huy was dull; with this many digital distractions competing for attention, sustaining focus for any real stretch has become genuinely hard. TikTok, constant pings, information delivered in six-second bursts, it's all trained us to expect speed over depth. One-on-one conversations and genuinely serious topics still get people's full attention, in fairness, but everything else seems to be fighting for scraps.

  18. 18. How can people improve communication with someone from a different generation?

    Band 6.5

Opens with the framing "I think one of the best ways", stating the advice in full before the anecdote begins.Mở đầu bằng phần dẫn dắt 'I think one of the best ways', nêu rõ lời khuyên trước khi câu chuyện bắt đầu.

I think one of the best ways to improve communication between generations is to really listen and try to see things from the other person's point of view. Last summer, my younger sister Vy was visiting from Ho Chi Minh City, and she was completely obsessed with a new K-pop group I'd never heard of. Honestly, I wasn't interested at all, but I made an effort to ask questions and let her show me a couple of their music videos. It was actually kind of fun to see her so enthusiastic, and it helped me understand what matters to her generation. Being patient and showing genuine curiosity goes a long way, even if you don't share the same interests.
