Đề bài (cue card)

Describe a tall building that you like or dislike.

You should say:

  • where this building is
  • what it looks like
  • what you know about it
  • and explain why you like or dislike this building.

Band 6.5

The evaluation is short and plainly honest ('I do not think it is especially beautiful, to be honest, but it is very easy to recognise'), giving a clear opinion without exploring it further.Phần đánh giá ngắn gọn và thẳng thắn ('I do not think it is especially beautiful, to be honest, but it is very easy to recognise'), đưa ra một ý kiến rõ ràng mà không khai thác thêm.

The tall building I want to describe is the Muong Thanh Grand hotel tower near My Khe Beach in Da Nang.

It is used as a hotel. Tourists and business visitors stay there, and there are also restaurants and a rooftop bar near the top floor. My friend Quân works there on the reception desk, so I have visited a few times to meet him after his shift.

It is located right next to the beach, only a few minutes' walk from the sand, and you can see it clearly from almost anywhere along the coast road. At night, its lights make it easy to find your way back if you are walking on the beach.

As for what it looks like, it is a tall white building with a lot of glass windows, and it looks quite modern compared to the older buildings nearby. I do not think it is especially beautiful, to be honest, but it is very easy to recognise.

I like this building because it reminds me of the beach and of visiting my friend. Every time I see it from far away, I know I am close to My Khe, which is one of my favourite places in the city.

  • GRAIt is used as a hotel.'It is used as a hotel' is a short, simple declarative sentence placed on its own, with no subordination or additional detail folded into it. This is close to the plainest grammatical form allowed by the Band 6.5 target — mostly simple sentences — used here as a standalone statement before the more detailed sentences that follow.'It is used as a hotel' là một câu trần thuật ngắn, đơn giản đứng độc lập, không có sự phụ thuộc hay chi tiết bổ sung nào được gói vào.
  • LRit looks quite modern compared to the older buildings nearbyThe comparison 'it looks quite modern compared to the older buildings nearby' is accurate and clear, but relies on the plain comparative phrase 'compared to' rather than any more specific architectural vocabulary. This matches the Band 6.5 lexical ceiling of everyday words used for straightforward description.Phép so sánh 'it looks quite modern compared to the older buildings nearby' chính xác và rõ ràng, nhưng dựa vào cụm so sánh đơn giản 'compared to' thay vì bất kỳ từ vựng kiến trúc cụ thể hơn nào.
  • FCI do not think it is especially beautiful, to be honest'I do not think it is especially beautiful, to be honest' states a direct opinion softened only by the common filler phrase 'to be honest', with no further reasoning given for the judgment. Stating an opinion plainly and stopping there, rather than justifying it, is typical of the Band 6.5 fluency target of minimal elaboration.'I do not think it is especially beautiful, to be honest' nêu một ý kiến trực tiếp chỉ được làm mềm bởi cụm từ đệm thông dụng 'to be honest', không có thêm lý lẽ nào cho nhận định đó. Việc nêu ý kiến trần trụi rồi dừng lại, thay vì biện minh cho nó, là điển hình của mục tiêu Fluency Band 6.5: triển khai ở mức tối thiểu.
Band 7.0

The reflective closing 'it's become linked to something quite personal for me, even though architecturally it's nothing particularly special' develops a personal evaluative point using a natural concession clause, a step beyond plain description.Câu kết mang tính suy ngẫm 'it's become linked to something quite personal for me, even though architecturally it's nothing particularly special' phát triển một quan điểm đánh giá cá nhân bằng một mệnh đề nhượng bộ tự nhiên, một bước tiến xa hơn cách miêu tả đơn thuần.

The tall building I'd like to talk about is an office tower in the centre of Da Nang, just off Nguyen Van Linh Street, that everyone locally just calls 'the blue tower' because of its glass.

It's used mainly for offices — there are several companies renting floors in it, including an advertising agency my cousin works for, plus a couple of restaurants on the ground floor and a rooftop cafe near the top that's popular with people taking photos for social media. I've been up to the rooftop a few times myself, mostly to meet my cousin for lunch.

It's located close to the centre of the city, not far from the Dragon Bridge, so it's easy to spot from quite a distance, especially at night when the whole building lights up in blue. It's become one of those landmarks people use when giving directions, like 'turn left after the blue tower.'

As for what it looks like, it's fairly modern — a tall rectangular building covered almost completely in blue-tinted glass, with a slightly angled top that catches the light differently depending on the time of day. It's not the most creative design in the city, if I'm honest, but it stands out because of the colour more than the shape.

I like this building mainly because of what it represents to me rather than how it looks. Every time I see it, I think of meeting my cousin and catching up over coffee on the rooftop, so it's become linked to something quite personal for me, even though architecturally it's nothing particularly special.

  • LReveryone locally just calls 'the blue tower' because of its glass'Everyone locally just calls...because of its glass' uses the informal, natural phrase 'everyone locally just calls' to introduce the nickname, followed by an economical reason clause rather than a longer explanation. This relaxed, unforced way of explaining a nickname matches the Band 7.0 lexical target of flexible, natural wording rather than anything formal or textbook-like.'Everyone locally just calls...because of its glass' sử dụng cụm từ không trang trọng, tự nhiên 'everyone locally just calls' để giới thiệu biệt danh, theo sau bởi một mệnh đề lý do ngắn gọn thay vì một lời giải thích dài hơn.
  • GRAIt's become one of those landmarks people use when giving directions'It's become one of those landmarks people use when giving directions' combines the present perfect 'has become' with an embedded clause that has no explicit relative pronoun, 'landmarks people use' rather than 'landmarks that people use'. Using this kind of zero-relative construction naturally, rather than always spelling out 'that' or 'which', is the comfortable complex grammar the Band 7.0 target describes.'It's become one of those landmarks people use when giving directions' kết hợp thì hiện tại hoàn thành 'has become' với một mệnh đề lồng ghép không có đại từ quan hệ tường minh, 'landmarks people use' thay vì 'landmarks that people use'. Việc sử dụng một cách tự nhiên kiểu cấu trúc mệnh đề quan hệ rút gọn (zero-relative) như vậy, thay vì luôn nói rõ 'that' hay 'which', chính là kiểu ngữ pháp phức tạp được sử dụng thoải mái mà mục tiêu Band 7.0 mô tả.
  • FCit's become linked to something quite personal for me, even though architecturally it's nothing particularly specialThe concession clause 'even though architecturally it's nothing particularly special' is used to build a reflective closing point — that the building matters personally despite being unremarkable in design terms. Reaching this kind of evaluative conclusion through a concession structure, rather than a flat closing statement, is exactly the fluency development the Band 7.0 target expects at the end of an answer.Mệnh đề nhượng bộ 'even though architecturally it's nothing particularly special' được dùng để xây dựng một điểm kết mang tính suy ngẫm — rằng tòa nhà có ý nghĩa cá nhân dù không có gì nổi bật về mặt kiến trúc.
Band 7.5

The abstract observation 'There's something democratic in a tower that people queue in' turns a physical description into a reflective social comment, distinctly Band 7.5 in its ambition.Nhận xét mang tính trừu tượng 'There's something democratic in a tower that people queue in' biến một mô tả vật lý thành một nhận định mang tính xã hội, đầy suy ngẫm, rõ ràng thể hiện tham vọng của Band 7.5.

The tall building I'd talk about is the Da Nang Administrative Centre, which everyone in the city calls the corn cob, because that's exactly what it looks like: a round tower, about thirty-seven floors, in pale green glass that bulges slightly in the middle and tapers at the top.

It's used for government offices — the city's departments were gathered from scattered old buildings into this one tower about a decade ago, so if you need a business licence, a land document or a permit, you go there. I've been inside twice, once to register my studio's paperwork, and I remember mainly the lifts, which are fast and slightly frightening, and a view from the twenty-something floor that made the whole city look like a model.

Where it is matters: it stands on the west bank of the Hàn river, right in the centre, so you can see it from almost anywhere — from the beach, from the bridges, from my balcony. At night it's lit in a soft green, and it's become the thing people point at to explain where things are.

What it looks like, honestly, is odd. It's the tallest building in the area and the only round one, and it has none of the sharp glamour of the towers in Ho Chi Minh City. When it was built, the jokes were merciless. I've decided I like it, and I'm slightly alone in that. I like that it's unmistakable; a designer learns that being memorable beats being pretty. I like that you can find it from anywhere, so it works as a compass. And I like that it belongs to the city rather than to a bank or a hotel — the tallest thing in Da Nang is the place where ordinary people go to sort out their lives. There's something democratic in a tower that people queue in, even if they complain about the shape while they wait.

  • LReveryone in the city calls the corn cob, because that's exactly what it looks likeThe nickname explanation — 'everyone in the city calls the corn cob, because that's exactly what it looks like' — uses a playful, self-evident justification rather than a literal architectural description, immediately setting an idiomatic, slightly cheeky tone. This kind of natural nickname-plus-justification is the figurative touch the Band 7.5 lexical target describes, and it sets up the extended corn-cob shape metaphor that the rest of the answer keeps returning to.Lời giải thích về biệt danh — 'everyone in the city calls the corn cob, because that's exactly what it looks like' — sử dụng một lý giải dí dỏm, hiển nhiên tự thân thay vì một mô tả kiến trúc theo nghĩa đen, ngay lập tức thiết lập một giọng điệu mang tính thành ngữ, hơi tinh nghịch. Kiểu biệt danh-cộng-lý giải tự nhiên này chính là nét chấm phá giàu hình ảnh mà mục tiêu từ vựng Band 7.5 mô tả, và nó thiết lập phép ẩn dụ hình dạng bắp ngô được mở rộng mà phần còn lại của câu trả lời liên tục quay trở lại.
  • GRAa designer learns that being memorable beats being pretty'A designer learns that being memorable beats being pretty' pairs two parallel gerund phrases, 'being memorable' and 'being pretty', around the contrastive verb 'beats', turning a personal opinion about the building into a general design principle. That kind of abstract generalisation built from parallel grammatical structures is the reflective insight and varied grammar the Band 7.5 target expects together, not just one or the other.'A designer learns that being memorable beats being pretty' đặt cạnh nhau hai cụm danh động từ song song, 'being memorable' và 'being pretty', xoay quanh động từ mang tính tương phản 'beats', biến một ý kiến cá nhân về tòa nhà thành một nguyên tắc thiết kế chung.
  • GRAThere's something democratic in a tower that people queue in'There's something democratic in a tower that people queue in' ends the relative clause on a stranded preposition, 'queue in', and applies the abstract, slightly unexpected adjective 'democratic' metaphorically to a government building. This combination of a flexible relative-clause structure and precise, less-common vocabulary is well beyond what a Band 7.0 answer would typically attempt on the same topic, and it crystallises the whole argument about the tower belonging to ordinary people.'There's something democratic in a tower that people queue in' kết thúc mệnh đề quan hệ bằng một giới từ bị tách rời, 'queue in', và áp dụng tính từ trừu tượng, hơi bất ngờ 'democratic' theo nghĩa ẩn dụ cho một tòa nhà chính phủ.

    Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer gives a direct assessment ("becoming more usual, but still quite new") and supports it with one plain contrast between the family house and a colleague's new flat, using simple connectors like "but" and "because".Bài ở band 6.5 đưa ra một đánh giá trực tiếp ("becoming more usual, but still quite new") và hỗ trợ bằng một sự tương phản đơn giản giữa ngôi nhà gia đình và căn hộ mới của đồng nghiệp, dùng các từ nối đơn giản như "but" và "because".

It is becoming more usual, but it is still quite new. My parents live in a typical Vietnamese house in Hue, which is narrow and has four floors, with a door onto the street. That is what most people still think of as a home. But in cities like Hanoi and Da Nang, tall apartment buildings with twenty or thirty floors are appearing quickly. A colleague of mine just bought a flat on the eighteenth floor because houses in the city cost too much now. Older people often dislike them, since living without ground feels strange to them.

    • FCThat is what most people still think of as a home. This short sentence restates the previous point plainly rather than folding it into the surrounding description. A 7.0 answer would more likely attach this idea directly onto the sentence about the house instead of stating it separately.Câu ngắn này nhắc lại ý trước đó một cách đơn giản thay vì lồng vào phần mô tả xung quanh.
    • LRtall apartment buildings with twenty or thirty floors are appearing quicklyThis is a plain, literal description using the basic verb "appearing" rather than a more vivid or specific one. A higher band would likely choose a more image-based verb for the same idea.Đây là một mô tả đơn giản, trực nghĩa, dùng động từ cơ bản "appearing" thay vì một động từ sống động hoặc cụ thể hơn.

    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer adds the reflective hedge "I'd say" and uses a dash-linked list ("four narrow floors, one family, a door onto the street") to describe the house, giving the answer a more natural spoken rhythm than the 6.5 version.Bài ở band 7.0 thêm từ giảm nhẹ mang tính suy ngẫm "I'd say" và dùng một danh sách nối bằng dấu gạch ngang ("four narrow floors, one family, a door onto the street") để mô tả ngôi nhà, mang lại nhịp điệu nói tự nhiên hơn phiên bản 6.5.

Increasingly usual, but still fairly new, I'd say. My parents live in a typical Vietnamese 'tube house' in Hue — four narrow floors, one family, a door onto the street — and that's still what most people picture when they think of home. In Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and now Da Nang, apartment towers of twenty or thirty floors have gone up fast, and young couples, like a colleague of mine who just bought a flat on the eighteenth floor, choose them because an actual house in the city has become almost impossible to afford. Older people often dislike them, since a home without any ground under it feels somehow wrong to them.

Increasingly usual, though still relatively new. My parents live in a typical Vietnamese 'tube house' in Hue — four narrow floors, one family, a door straight onto the street — and that remains most people's mental picture of home. In Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and now Da Nang, apartment towers of twenty or thirty storeys have shot up in a matter of years, and young couples, a colleague of mine among them, are choosing them simply because a house in the city has slipped out of reach financially. Older people, meanwhile, tend to resist the shift; a home with no ground beneath it feels wrong to them, and there's nowhere left for the ancestral altar to face the street. So it's common now, largely out of necessity, and mostly among the young.

The biggest problem is that everything depends on things working properly. During a power cut last summer, my colleague on the eighteenth floor had no electricity, so there was no lift and no water. She had to carry her shopping up eighteen flights of stairs in very hot weather. Fire is also a worry, because it is slow to escape from a high floor. There is also less contact with neighbours, because you meet them in the lift instead of outside. The building also depends on a management company to fix problems like the water pump.

    • FCShe had to carry her shopping up eighteen flights of stairs in very hot weather. This is a short, plain narrative sentence with a simple past structure, stating the fact directly without much colour. Mostly, it's the dependence on things working. During a power cut last summer, my colleague on the eighteenth floor discovered that no electricity meant no lift and no water pump, and she ended up carrying her shopping up eighteen flights in thirty-five-degree heat. Fire is the fear underneath that, since escape from a high floor is genuinely slow. Beyond emergencies, there's the daily distance from the street — a neighbour becomes someone you occasionally meet in a lift rather than over a fence, and the whole building depends on a management company that may or may not actually fix the pump. Add the noise from the lift shaft and higher fees, and the view starts to feel expensive.

My uncle in Hue drew his own house on graph paper because no builder would put the kitchen at the front, where he actually cooks and talks to the street — some people design their own home precisely because standard designs are built for a standard life they don't lead. Others want to save the architect's fee, or relish the control, or have lived in enough bad houses to know exactly what they want. For some it's an expression of identity, the one big creative act most people ever get. The results range from wonderful to structurally alarming, and yet the impulse behind them makes complete sense to me; a house is the only object most of us will ever shape entirely around ourselves.

I think it's more difficult than it looks. An architect friend of mine redesigned one house eleven times in a year because the client's mother-in-law kept changing her mind about the stairs. This shows a normal problem: an architect has to please the client, the budget, the building rules, the site and the weather all at the same time, and they do not always agree. The technical side is also serious, because a mistake in a building could hurt people. Also, most buildings that get built are not as good as the architect first designed, which must be frustrating.

Extending an existing city usually works better, I think, because cities grow naturally instead of being planned all at once. A new planned city outside Hanoi stood almost empty for years, with wide roads and no shops, while the old city kept growing around it. This is because people go where other people and jobs already are. Extending a city uses roads, water and culture that already exist, and can happen slowly. New cities can make sense sometimes, like easing pressure on a crowded capital. But they need a lot of time and patience to feel alive.

Extending an existing city uses infrastructure, culture and momentum that already exist, and it can be done gradually.

    • FCI'd extend well before I built new, and I'd extend outward along transport lines, not just outward in generalThis closing sentence deliberately repeats "extend outward" to draw a fine distinction, an idiomatic rhetorical device beyond the plain summarising sentence a 6.5 answer would end on.Câu kết này cố ý lặp lại "extend outward" để vạch ra một sự phân biệt tinh tế, một thủ pháp tu từ mang tính thành ngữ vượt qua câu tổng kết đơn giản mà bài ở band 6.5 sẽ kết thúc bằng.
    • LRrelieving a capital that has become unworkable, or anchoring a new industry"Anchoring" is a precise, figurative verb choice in place of the plainer "building near a new industry" a 7.0 answer would use for the same idea."Anchoring" là một lựa chọn động từ chính xác, mang tính hình tượng thay cho "building near a new industry" đơn giản hơn mà bài ở band 7.0 sẽ dùng cho cùng ý tưởng.
    • GRAA planned new city outside Hanoi stood half-empty for years, wide roads and no shops, while the old city simply kept growing around itThe verb is dropped from "wide roads and no shops", turning it into a compressed appositive fragment rather than a full "with"-phrase, a more economical construction than the fuller phrasing of lower bands.Động từ bị lược bỏ khỏi "wide roads and no shops", biến nó thành một cụm đồng vị nén lại thay vì một cụm "with" đầy đủ, một cấu trúc tiết kiệm hơn cách diễn đạt đầy đủ hơn ở band thấp.
  9. 9. Why might it be important to consult local residents when planning new developments in a city?

    So sánh Band 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 cho câu hỏi này
    Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer states the main reason directly ("residents know things that planners cannot see") and supports it with one clear example, using simple connectors like "because" throughout.Bài ở band 6.5 nêu thẳng lý do chính ("residents know things that planners cannot see") và hỗ trợ bằng một ví dụ rõ ràng, dùng từ nối đơn giản như "because" xuyên suốt.

Because residents know things planners cannot see from a drawing. A new park near my flat had a big, open lawn nobody uses, because in Da Nang's heat, people needed shade, seating and space for food stalls. The neighbours could have said all of this in five minutes if anyone had asked them. Consultation brings out practical knowledge, like where water collects or children cross the road. It also makes people care more about a place, because they helped to plan it. It can be slow, and the loudest voices can take over, so it needs to be managed carefully.

    • FCThe neighbours could have said all of this in five minutes if anyone had asked them. This sentence uses a plain conditional ("could have said... if anyone had asked") stated directly and separately from the example before it. A 7.5 answer would more likely compress this into the same sentence as the example.Câu này dùng một câu điều kiện đơn giản ("could have said... if anyone had asked") được nêu trực tiếp và tách biệt với ví dụ trước đó.
    • LRIt also makes people care more about a place, because they helped to plan it."Makes people care more" is a plain, general phrase rather than a more specific term like "ownership" for the same idea."Makes people care more" là một cụm từ đơn giản, chung chung thay vì một thuật ngữ cụ thể hơn như "ownership" cho cùng ý tưởng.
    • GRAIt can be slow, and the loudest voices can take over, so it needs to be managed carefully. This sentence chains three short clauses with "and" and "so", accurate but structurally simple compared to higher bands.Câu này nối ba mệnh đề ngắn bằng "and" và "so", chính xác nhưng cấu trúc đơn giản so với band cao hơn.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer folds the example and its lesson into one sentence with a dash ("all of which the neighbours would have said...") and introduces the more precise term "ownership", giving the argument more cohesion than the 6.5 list.Bài ở band 7.0 lồng ví dụ và bài học của nó vào một câu bằng dấu gạch ngang ("all of which the neighbours would have said...") và giới thiệu thuật ngữ chính xác hơn "ownership", mang lại cho lập luận tính liên kết hơn danh sách ở band 6.5.

Because residents know things planners just can't see from a drawing, honestly. A new park near my flat was designed with a beautiful open lawn nobody uses, since what people in Da Nang's heat actually needed was shade, seating and somewhere for the evening food stalls — all of which the neighbours would have said in five minutes if anyone had asked. Consultation surfaces practical knowledge: where the water collects, where children cross, which corner feels unsafe at night. It also builds a sense of ownership, since people look after a place they helped shape. It does slow things down and can be dominated by the loudest voices, so it needs managing.

    • FCBecause residents know things planners just can't see from a drawing, honestly. The spoken connector "honestly" at the end of the opening sentence adds a natural conversational emphasis a 6.5 answer's plain opening would not include.Từ nối mang tính khẩu ngữ "honestly" ở cuối câu mở đầu thêm một sự nhấn mạnh mang tính trò chuyện tự nhiên mà phần mở đầu đơn giản của bài 6.5 điểm sẽ không có.
    • LRIt also builds a sense of ownership, since people look after a place they helped shape"A sense of ownership" is a more precise, abstract noun phrase than the plain "makes people care more" a 6.5 answer would use for the same idea."A sense of ownership" là một cụm danh từ chính xác, trừu tượng hơn cách nói đơn giản "makes people care more" mà bài ở band 6.5 sẽ dùng cho cùng ý tưởng.
    • GRAa beautiful open lawn nobody uses, since what people in Da Nang's heat actually needed was shade, seating and somewhere for the evening food stalls — all of which the neighbours would have said in five minutes if anyone had askedThe dash introduces a which-clause referring back to the whole preceding idea, a moderately complex structure linking example and lesson in one sentence rather than the two separate sentences a 6.5 answer would use.Dấu gạch ngang dẫn vào một mệnh đề which chỉ về toàn bộ ý trước đó, một cấu trúc phức tạp vừa phải nối ví dụ và bài học trong một câu thay vì hai câu tách biệt mà bài ở band 6.5 sẽ dùng.
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer uses the inverted conditional "had anyone thought to ask" instead of a plain if-clause and closes with the neatly parallel aphorism "a development nobody asked for tends to become a development nobody uses".Bài ở band 7.5 dùng câu điều kiện đảo ngữ "had anyone thought to ask" thay vì mệnh đề if đơn giản và kết bằng câu châm ngôn song song gọn gàng "a development nobody asked for tends to become a development nobody uses".

Because residents know things planners can't see from a drawing. A new park near my flat was designed around a beautiful open lawn that nobody uses, since what people actually needed in Da Nang's heat was shade, seating and somewhere for the evening food stalls — all of which the neighbours would have said in five minutes, had anyone thought to ask. Consultation surfaces exactly this kind of practical knowledge: where the water collects, where children cross, which corner feels unsafe after dark. It also builds acceptance, since people tend to look after a place they helped shape and resist one simply imposed on them. It slows things down and can be hijacked by the loudest voices, so it needs careful managing. But a development nobody asked for tends to become a development nobody uses.

    • FCBut a development nobody asked for tends to become a development nobody uses. This closing sentence uses a tight, parallel repetition ("nobody asked for... nobody uses") as a memorable final line, a more polished rhetorical device than the plain summarising sentence a 6.5 answer ends on.Câu kết này dùng sự lặp lại song song, chặt chẽ ("nobody asked for... nobody uses") làm dòng cuối dễ nhớ, một thủ pháp tu từ chỉn chu hơn câu tổng kết đơn giản mà bài ở band 6.5 kết thúc bằng.
    • LRIt also builds acceptance, since people tend to look after a place they helped shape and resist one simply imposed on them"Imposed on them" is a precise, slightly formal verb choice contrasting with "helped shape", more distinctive than the plainer "makes people care more" a 6.5 answer would use."Imposed on them" là một lựa chọn động từ chính xác, hơi trang trọng đối lập với "helped shape", đặc sắc hơn cách nói đơn giản hơn "makes people care more" mà bài ở band 6.5 sẽ dùng.
    • GRAall of which the neighbours would have said in five minutes, had anyone thought to askThe inverted conditional "had anyone thought to ask" replaces the more ordinary "if anyone had asked", a more literary, compressed construction than the standard conditional lower bands would use.Câu điều kiện đảo ngữ "had anyone thought to ask" thay thế cách nói thông thường hơn "if anyone had asked", một cấu trúc mang tính văn học, cô đọng hơn câu điều kiện chuẩn mà band thấp hơn sẽ dùng.
