Gần nhất ra thi tháng 5–8/2026

Đề bài (cue card)

Describe a place in the countryside that you enjoyed visiting

You should say:

  • where you went in the countryside
  • why you went to this place in the countryside
  • what you saw and did there
  • and explain why you enjoyed visiting this place in the countryside

Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer states its reasons plainly ('It was so quiet and different from my normal life') and lists sensory details without much elaboration, typical of straightforward Band 6.5 description.Bài mẫu band 6.5 nêu lý do một cách trực tiếp ('Nó thật yên tĩnh và khác hẳn cuộc sống thường ngày của tôi') và liệt kê các chi tiết cảm quan mà không đi sâu giải thích, đặc trưng cho lối miêu tả thẳng thắn của band 6.5.

The countryside place I want to talk about is a small vegetable farm in Hòa Vang district, which is about forty minutes from my apartment in Da Nang.

I went there during Tet last year, because my friend Quân invited me to visit his family's farm instead of staying in the city for the holiday. I had never really seen a working farm before, so I said yes straight away.

While I was there, I saw rows and rows of vegetables, like lettuce and green onions, and I helped Quân's family water the plants and pick some vegetables for lunch. In the afternoon, we sat outside under a big tree and ate a simple meal made almost entirely from things grown right there on the farm. His grandmother also showed me how to feed the chickens, which I found surprisingly fun.

I enjoyed visiting this place because it was so quiet and different from my normal life. There was no traffic noise, no phone notifications, just green fields and fresh air. The food tasted better than anything I usually eat in the city too. I would definitely like to go back sometime, maybe for the next harvest.

  • FCI went there during Tet last year, because my friend Quân invited me to visit his family's farm instead of staying in the city for the holiday. The sentence answers the implicit 'why did you go' with a single 'because' clause giving one clear cause (the friend's invitation) plus one contrast ('instead of staying in the city'), directly following the cue card's natural order of when/why. It's a complete, on-topic answer to that part of the prompt without further elaboration on why the invitation was appealing beyond the holiday timing, which a 7.0 answer might add.
  • LRsurprisingly fun'Surprisingly fun' combines two common, everyday words to convey an unexpected positive reaction to feeding chickens, rather than a more specific or vivid description a higher band might use for the same small moment. The word 'surprisingly' does carry a little nuance — signalling the speaker didn't expect to enjoy it — but the vocabulary overall stays plain and functional, matching the 6.5 target of clear, high-frequency words used accurately rather than reaching for more distinctive phrasing.'Surprisingly fun' (bất ngờ thú vị) kết hợp hai từ thông dụng, đời thường để truyền tải một phản ứng tích cực không mong đợi đối với việc cho gà ăn, thay vì một mô tả cụ thể hoặc sống động hơn mà một band cao hơn có thể dùng cho cùng khoảnh khắc nhỏ này.
  • GRAThere was no traffic noise, no phone notifications, just green fields and fresh air.The sentence drops the repeated 'there was' after the first item and lists the remaining three elements as a simple asyndetic list, which is a basic ellipsis technique rather than a more developed parallel structure. It's accurate and reads naturally as a spoken list contrasting city and countryside, but it doesn't build the contrast into a fuller comparative sentence explicitly comparing this quiet to the noise of city life within the same clause, the way a 7.0 answer might.
Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer uses a natural collocation ('a much slower, calmer pace') and adds a short reflective observation about noticing how rushed daily life normally is, developing beyond plain description without reaching for literary structures.Bài mẫu band 7.0 dùng một cụm từ tự nhiên ('một nhịp sống chậm rãi, êm ả hơn nhiều') và thêm một nhận xét chiêm nghiệm ngắn về việc nhận ra cuộc sống thường ngày vội vã đến mức nào, phát triển vượt ra ngoài miêu tả đơn thuần mà không cần đến các cấu trúc mang tính văn chương.

The countryside place I'd like to talk about is a small tea farm up in the hills outside Đà Nẵng, about an hour's drive from where I live, which belongs to my colleague Nam's family.

I went there for the first time last spring, because Nam had been talking about the tea harvest for weeks and eventually just invited a few of us from the office to come and see it for ourselves. I'd never actually seen tea being picked before, even though I drink it almost every day, so I was curious enough to say yes straight away.

While I was there, I remember walking between rows of tea bushes early in the morning, before it got too hot, while Nam's mother showed us exactly which leaves to pick and which to leave alone. It's harder than it looks, and I was much slower than everyone else, picking maybe a quarter of what they managed in the same time. Later we sat on the porch and watched the leaves being dried in the sun, and Nam's father made us fresh tea from leaves picked that same morning, which honestly tasted completely different from anything I'd bought before.

I enjoyed visiting this place mainly because everything moved at a much slower, calmer pace than I'm used to. There was no traffic, hardly any phone signal, and nothing to do except focus on one simple task at a time. It made me realise how rushed my normal daily routine actually is, without me really noticing it most of the time. I've already told Nam I want to come back for the next harvest, assuming my picking speed has improved by then.

  • LRa much slower, calmer pace'A much slower, calmer pace' pairs two related adjectives to build a fuller sense of the change in rhythm than either word alone would give, and 'pace' itself is a slightly more abstract noun than a plainer phrase like 'everything was slower'.
  • FCIt made me realise how rushed my normal daily routine actually is, without me really noticing it most of the time.Rather than just describing the farm visit, the speaker draws a conclusion about their own daily life back in the city — realising how 'rushed' their normal routine is — and adds the detail that they hadn't consciously noticed this before. This kind of reflective point, moving from a specific trip to an insight about the speaker's usual life, is the Band 7.0 development the descriptor calls for beyond plain narration.
  • GRALater we sat on the porch and watched the leaves being dried in the sun, and Nam's father made us fresh tea from leaves picked that same morning, which honestly tasted completely different from anything I'd bought before. The sentence combines a passive gerund ('watched the leaves being dried'), a coordinated main clause about the father making tea, and a relative clause commenting on the tea's taste ('which honestly tasted completely different'), all within one long but controlled sentence. Managing three different grammatical devices in sequence without losing accuracy is the comfortable complex range Band 7.0 grammar is designed to reward.Câu này kết hợp một cụm động danh từ bị động ('watched the leaves being dried'), một mệnh đề chính phối hợp về việc người cha pha trà, và một mệnh đề quan hệ nhận xét về hương vị của trà ('which honestly tasted completely different'), tất cả trong một câu dài nhưng được kiểm soát tốt. Việc xử lý ba công cụ ngữ pháp khác nhau theo trình tự mà không mất đi độ chính xác chính là phạm vi phức thoải mái mà ngữ pháp band 7.0 được thiết kế để đánh giá cao.
Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer is built on precise, concrete phrasing ('turns into a mud track') and closes with a dry, ironic one-liner ('My planting speed had not improved.') that gives the whole answer a wry, controlled finish.Bài mẫu band 7.5 được xây dựng trên cách diễn đạt chính xác, cụ thể ('biến thành một con đường đất lầy lội') và kết thúc bằng một câu ngắn khô khan, mỉa mai ('Tốc độ trồng cây của tôi vẫn chưa hề cải thiện.') mang lại cho toàn bộ câu trả lời một cái kết dí dỏm, có kiểm soát.

The countryside place I'd talk about is a village outside Tam Kỳ, in Quảng Nam province, where my friend Khánh's grandparents live. It's about ninety minutes south of Da Nang by motorbike, on a road that turns into a mud track between rice fields for the last ten minutes.

I went for the first time in June, two years ago, because Khánh's family were planting rice and she'd offered anyone from the office a weekend of free food in return for free labour. I'd never been in a paddy field in my life, which she found hilarious for someone who was born in Hue, surrounded by them.

The village is a few dozen houses along a canal. The grandparents' house is wooden, dark and cool inside, with the ancestral altar facing the door and photographs of relatives I was introduced to as if they were present. Outside there's a yard with a tamarind tree, a duck pond, and a view across flat green fields to a line of hills that turn blue in the evening.

What we did was work, mostly. Planting rice means standing calf-deep in warm mud, bent over, pushing seedlings in a line at a speed that Khánh's grandmother, who is seventy-eight, could maintain all morning and I could maintain for about twenty minutes. In the evening her uncle brought out rice wine and asked me detailed questions about app design that I'm certain he didn't care about but which he asked with perfect politeness.

Why I enjoyed it is partly the obvious: the quiet, the air, the food that was growing ten metres from the kitchen. But mostly it was the rhythm. There, the day is shaped by light and heat rather than notifications, and after two days I noticed I'd stopped reaching for my phone because there was nothing in it that mattered. I went back the following year for the harvest. My planting speed had not improved.

  • LRturns into a mud track'Turns into a mud track' is precise and visual, naming the specific transformation the road undergoes rather than a vaguer description like 'the road gets bad', and it sets up the physical remoteness of the village before the story even begins. This kind of exact, image-carrying phrasing, chosen instead of a general adjective, is the precise vocabulary the Band 7.5 descriptor asks for.'Turns into a mud track' chính xác và giàu hình ảnh, gọi tên đúng sự biến đổi cụ thể mà con đường trải qua thay vì một mô tả mơ hồ hơn như 'the road gets bad', và nó thiết lập sự xa xôi về mặt vật lý của ngôi làng ngay cả trước khi câu chuyện bắt đầu.
  • FCwhich she found hilarious for someone who was born in Hue, surrounded by themThe aside about Khánh finding it 'hilarious' that someone born in Hue had never stood in a paddy field adds a moment of self-deprecating humour without breaking the narrative flow, and it's delivered with restraint rather than being explained or laboured. This kind of wry, understated humour woven into the story — rather than a straightforward statement of embarrassment — is the evaluative, personality-revealing touch Band 7.5 fluency and coherence rewards.
  • GRAMy planting speed had not improved.'My planting speed had not improved' uses the past perfect for deliberate deadpan effect after a full year has passed, deflating the sense of personal growth a reader might expect from a return visit. Choosing this flat, ironic closing register over a more conventional wrap-up sentence ('I really enjoyed going back') is a controlled stylistic decision that marks Band 7.5 grammar and delivery, not just correctness.'My planting speed had not improved' sử dụng thì quá khứ hoàn thành để tạo hiệu ứng châm biếm điềm tĩnh có chủ đích sau khi một năm đã trôi qua, làm xẹp đi cảm giác trưởng thành cá nhân mà một người đọc có thể mong đợi từ một chuyến thăm trở lại.

    Band 6.5

The plain opener 'The biggest problem is that help is far away' states the position immediately, with no hedging, which is typical of a 6.5 answer.Câu mở đầu đơn giản 'The biggest problem is that help is far away' nêu quan điểm ngay lập tức, không có sự giảm nhẹ nào, đây là đặc trưng điển hình của một câu trả lời band 6.5.

The biggest problem is that help is far away. Khánh's grandmother fell in her yard last year, and nobody noticed for forty minutes. Then it took two more hours for a doctor to arrive, but in the city an ambulance only takes fifteen minutes. Also, schools and jobs are not as good in the countryside, and the internet is often slow. Everyone knows each other there, which is nice but can feel too close. Young people move away, so villages get older every year.

    • FCAlso, schools and jobs are not as good in the countrysideNew ideas are simply bolted on with 'Also', a basic additive linker. The 7.0 version instead opens with 'Beyond emergencies, I'd say', signalling a real shift of topic rather than just adding another item to a list.Các ý mới chỉ đơn giản được gắn thêm bằng 'Also', một liên từ bổ sung cơ bản.
    • LRhelp is far awayThis is modest, everyday vocabulary that gets the meaning across but stays generic. The 7.5 version upgrades the same idea to 'how far away help really is' and later to 'claustrophobic', choosing more precise, evaluative words.Đây là từ vựng khiêm tốn, đời thường, truyền tải được ý nghĩa nhưng vẫn chung chung. Phiên bản band 7.5 nâng cấp cùng ý tưởng đó thành 'how far away help really is' và sau đó là 'claustrophobic', chọn những từ chính xác, mang tính đánh giá hơn.
    • GRAnobody noticed for forty minutesA short, simple past-tense clause with no subordination. The 7.5 rewrite folds the same fact into a longer sentence with an embedded clause, 'lay there for forty minutes before a neighbour noticed her', showing more controlled complexity.Một mệnh đề thì quá khứ ngắn, đơn giản, không có cấu trúc phụ thuộc. Bản viết lại ở band 7.5 gộp cùng sự việc đó vào một câu dài hơn với một mệnh đề lồng ghép, 'lay there for forty minutes before a neighbour noticed her', cho thấy độ phức tạp được kiểm soát tốt hơn.
    Band 7.0

The opening hedge 'Honestly, the sharpest disadvantage is' softens a strong claim just enough to sound like natural spoken reflection rather than a flat announcement.Cách nói giảm nhẹ mở đầu 'Honestly, the sharpest disadvantage is' làm mềm một khẳng định mạnh mẽ vừa đủ để nghe như một sự suy ngẫm khẩu ngữ tự nhiên thay vì một lời tuyên bố thẳng thừng.

Honestly, the sharpest disadvantage is distance from help. Khánh's grandmother fell in the yard last year and lay there for forty minutes before anyone noticed, and it took two more hours before a doctor reached her, whereas in Da Nang that's a fifteen-minute ambulance ride. Beyond emergencies, I'd say education and jobs are limited, the internet is patchy, and the close social life, though warm, means everyone knows your business. To be fair, young people naturally drift to the city, so villages are ageing. So the beauty outsiders admire can mean floods and hard physical work for the people who actually live there.

    • FCBeyond emergencies, I'd say education and jobs are limitedThis pivots the topic with a phrase rather than the bare 'Also' of 6.5, and the hedge 'I'd say' adds a spoken quality that 7.5 replaces with a tighter colon-led list instead.Câu này chuyển chủ đề bằng một cụm từ thay vì 'Also' trơ trọi ở band 6.5, và cách nói giảm nhẹ 'I'd say' thêm vào chất khẩu ngữ mà band 7.5 thay bằng một danh sách dẫn bằng dấu hai chấm chặt chẽ hơn.
    • LRclose social life, though warm, means everyone knows your businessThe parenthetical 'though warm' is an evaluative aside that goes beyond 6.5's plain 'which is nice but'. It is a little less compact than 7.5's paired adjectives 'warm but claustrophobic'.Cụm chêm 'though warm' là một lời bình mang tính đánh giá, vượt xa cụm đơn giản ở band 6.5 'which is nice but'. Nó kém cô đọng hơn một chút so với cặp tính từ ở band 7.5 'warm but claustrophobic'.
    • GRAlay there for forty minutes before anyone noticedThe subordinating conjunction 'before' links two events smoothly, a step up from 6.5's two separate simple sentences, though it is still less densely packed than 7.5's appositive clause.Liên từ phụ thuộc 'before' nối hai sự kiện một cách mượt mà, tiến bộ hơn so với hai câu đơn tách rời ở band 6.5, dù vẫn kém cô đọng hơn mệnh đề đồng vị ở band 7.5.
    Band 7.5

The appositive '— a wait that would be a fifteen-minute ambulance ride in Da Nang —' compresses a whole comparison into one embedded clause, the compact grammar typical of a 7.5 response.Cụm đồng vị '— a wait that would be a fifteen-minute ambulance ride in Da Nang —' nén cả một phép so sánh vào một mệnh đề lồng ghép, ngữ pháp cô đọng điển hình của một câu trả lời band 7.5.

The sharpest disadvantage, without question, is how far away help really is. Khánh's grandmother fell in the yard last year and lay there for forty minutes before a neighbour noticed her, and a further two hours passed before a doctor arrived — a wait that would be a fifteen-minute ambulance ride in Da Nang. Beyond emergencies, there's limited education, thin job prospects, patchy internet, and a social life that's warm but claustrophobic: everyone knows your business, which comforts some and suffocates others. Young people drain away toward the cities, leaving villages to age quietly. And the very scenery that visitors romanticise often translates, for the people who actually live inside it, into floods, isolation and relentless physical labour.

The short declarative 'Nobody called that tourism' delivers the contrast in four plain words, characteristic of 6.5's direct, unembellished style.Câu trần thuật ngắn 'Nobody called that tourism' truyền tải sự đối lập chỉ bằng bốn từ đơn giản, đặc trưng cho phong cách trực tiếp, không tô vẽ của band 6.5.

Yes, I think more people visit now, but for different reasons. My parents only went to the countryside because they came from it, so visiting the village meant visiting family. Nobody called that tourism. Now there is a homestay sign at the end of Khánh's grandparents' lane, and city couples with no village of their own go there just for the scenery. Better roads and social media made the countryside a destination. But fewer people have family in a village now, so the old kind of visiting is disappearing.

My parents' generation only ever went to the countryside because they came from it — visiting the village simply meant visiting family, and nobody would have called it tourism. Now there's a homestay sign at the end of Khánh's grandparents' lane, and city couples with no village of their own book weekends there just for the scenery. Cars, better roads and social media have turned rural areas into destinations. At the same time, fewer people still have relatives in a village, so, to be fair, the old kind of visiting is slowly fading.

Now there's a homestay sign nailed up at the end of Khánh's grandparents' lane, and city couples with no village to call their own book weekends there purely for the scenery. Cars, smoother roads and social media have quietly rebranded rural areas as destinations.

A former colleague of mine quit our studio at thirty-two to keep bees on a smallholding outside Hội An, and when I asked why, she said she simply wanted her work to make sense — plant, tend, harvest, sell, rather than a chain of emails about a button. That's one reason: the countryside offers a life with visible cause and effect, something a lot of city jobs quietly strip away. Others crave quiet, or space for their children, or lower costs that let them work fewer hours. Some never left at all and genuinely can't imagine why anyone would. And there's a growing tribe who work remotely and have finally realised the city was only ever useful for its office. The motives differ, but they share one suspicion: that city life costs more than it gives back.

The problems make each other worse. In Khánh's village, the school merged with the next commune's school because there were not enough children. That meant a longer trip for the children who stayed, so more families left. Fields are left empty because nobody under fifty works them anymore, so less food is grown. Services close too, like the bus route and the clinic, because there are not enough people to pay for them. The people left behind are mostly old, and there is nobody to look after them.

But drop a city person into the village for a year and they'd absorb most of it soon enough. The place shapes the person; it doesn't manufacture a different kind of person.

    • FCin my studio, by contrast, we interrupt each other within secondsThe semicolon plus 'by contrast' creates a tightly balanced single-sentence comparison, more economical than 6.5's two separate sentences and slightly tighter than 7.0's 'whereas' version.Dấu chấm phẩy cộng với 'by contrast' tạo ra một phép so sánh trong một câu duy nhất, cân bằng chặt chẽ, tiết kiệm hơn hai câu tách riêng ở band 6.5 và chặt chẽ hơn một chút so với phiên bản 'whereas' ở band 7.0.
    • LRa life with more time on its hands and fewer strangers passing through itThe personified idiom 'time on its hands' is a more idiomatic, vivid phrase than 6.5's flat 'a slower life' and 7.0's plainer 'a life with more time'.Thành ngữ nhân cách hóa 'time on its hands' là một cụm mang tính thành ngữ, sống động hơn cụm phẳng 'a slower life' ở band 6.5 và cụm đơn giản hơn 'a life with more time' ở band 7.0.
    • GRAThe place shapes the person; it doesn't manufacture a different kind of personThe semicolon-joined pair with the precise verb 'manufacture' shows more compact, controlled grammar than 6.5's comma-joined 'but' sentence on the same idea.Cặp câu nối bằng dấu chấm phẩy cùng động từ chính xác 'manufacture' cho thấy ngữ pháp cô đọng, kiểm soát tốt hơn câu nối bằng dấu phẩy với 'but' cùng ý ở band 6.5.
  9. 9. What kinds of people enjoy visiting the countryside?

    So sánh Band 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 cho câu hỏi này
    Band 6.5

The plain closing sentence 'Older people often enjoy it most' adds a final point without any explanation, in typical direct 6.5 style.Câu kết đơn giản 'Older people often enjoy it most' thêm vào một ý cuối mà không có lời giải thích nào, theo phong cách trực tiếp điển hình của band 6.5.

Three of us went from the office one weekend, which was interesting. Two of us loved it — we both stare at screens all day and wanted something slow and physical. The third person was bored by lunchtime and went home early, because she needed noise and activity. So I think people who enjoy the countryside are usually people who already have enough of the city, like tired office workers, parents who want their kids to see animals, and photographers. People who need constant excitement usually don't enjoy it. Older people often enjoy it most.

    • LRThe third person was bored by lunchtime and went home earlyA simple past-tense narrative sentence. The 7.5 version sharpens the same fact with the idiom 'bored stiff by lunchtime on day one', which is far more vivid and specific.Một câu kể chuyện thì quá khứ đơn giản. Phiên bản band 7.5 làm sắc nét hơn cùng sự việc đó bằng thành ngữ 'bored stiff by lunchtime on day one', sống động và cụ thể hơn nhiều.
    • FCSo I think people who enjoy the countryside are usually people who already have enough of the cityThe transition 'So I think' is functional but plain. The 7.0 version instead opens with 'So I'd say the people who enjoy the countryside tend to be those who', a slightly more hedged and natural-sounding equivalent.Từ chuyển tiếp 'So I think' có tính chức năng nhưng đơn giản. Phiên bản band 7.0 thay vào đó mở đầu bằng 'So I'd say the people who enjoy the countryside tend to be those who', một cách diễn đạt tương đương hơi giảm nhẹ và nghe tự nhiên hơn.
    • GRAlike tired office workers, parents who want their kids to see animals, and photographersA straightforward comma list of three items. The 7.5 version extends this list to four items with more specific, evaluative phrasing, such as 'anyone nursing a rural childhood they miss', which needs a relative clause rather than a single noun.Một danh sách ba mục trực diện, phân cách bằng dấu phẩy. Phiên bản band 7.5 mở rộng danh sách này thành bốn mục với cách diễn đạt cụ thể, mang tính đánh giá hơn, như 'anyone nursing a rural childhood they miss', đòi hỏi một mệnh đề quan hệ thay vì chỉ một danh từ đơn.
    Band 7.0

The word 'revealing' to describe the split among colleagues is a more precise, reflective choice than 6.5's plain 'interesting to watch'.Từ 'revealing' để mô tả sự phân hóa giữa các đồng nghiệp là một lựa chọn chính xác, mang tính suy ngẫm hơn cụm đơn giản 'interesting to watch' ở band 6.5.

Honestly, three of us went from the office that first weekend, and the split was revealing. Two of us loved it — both people who spend all day at screens and were genuinely starving for something slow and physical. The third was bored by lunchtime on day one and went home, because she needed noise and options. So I'd say the people who enjoy the countryside tend to be those who already have enough of the city to want its opposite: overworked professionals, parents who want their children to see a duck, photographers, anyone with a rural childhood they miss. People who thrive on stimulation generally don't feel the same pull, to be fair.

    • FCPeople who thrive on stimulation generally don't feel the same pull, to be fairThe hedge 'to be fair' at the end softens what would otherwise be a blunt generalisation, unlike 6.5's flat closing statement with no such cushioning.Cách nói giảm nhẹ 'to be fair' ở cuối làm mềm điều mà nếu không sẽ là một sự khái quát thẳng thừng, khác với câu kết bằng phẳng ở band 6.5 không có lớp đệm như vậy.
    • GRAthose who already have enough of the city to want its oppositeThe infinitive clause 'to want its opposite' adds a layer of consequence within a single sentence, more grammatically developed than 6.5's simpler relative clause 'who already have enough of the city'.Mệnh đề nguyên mẫu 'to want its opposite' thêm vào một tầng hệ quả trong một câu duy nhất, phát triển hơn về mặt ngữ pháp so với mệnh đề quan hệ đơn giản hơn ở band 6.5 'who already have enough of the city'.
    Band 7.5

The simile 'needing noise and options the way some people need coffee' turns a simple observation into a memorable, idiomatic image.Phép so sánh 'needing noise and options the way some people need coffee' biến một nhận xét đơn giản thành một hình ảnh đáng nhớ, mang tính thành ngữ.

Three of us went from the office that first weekend, and the split was oddly instructive. Two of us loved it — both people who spend all day glued to screens and were quietly starving for something physical and unhurried. The third was bored stiff by lunchtime on day one and went home, needing noise and options the way some people need coffee. So the people who genuinely enjoy the countryside tend to be those who already have plenty of city in their system and want its opposite: overworked professionals, parents keen for their children to see a real duck, photographers, anyone nursing a rural childhood they miss. People who thrive on stimulation generally don't take to it at all. And older visitors often enjoy it most of everyone, simply because it's the world they still remember.
