  • and explain why you would not want to live in this person's home.

Band 6.5

The answer gives one plain reason to like the house and one plain reason not to live there, using simple, high-frequency vocabulary throughout ('so clean', 'a bit scary'), typical of Band 6.5.Câu trả lời đưa ra một lý do đơn giản để thích ngôi nhà và một lý do đơn giản để không muốn sống ở đó, dùng từ vựng đơn giản, thông dụng xuyên suốt ('rất sạch sẽ', 'hơi đáng sợ'), đặc trưng của Band 6.5.

The home I want to talk about belongs to my friend Quân, whose family has a house on Son Tra Peninsula, not far from Da Nang. I visited it last summer, when he invited a few of us from university days for a weekend barbecue.

Quân lives there with his parents, in a house surrounded by a garden with fruit trees, right at the bottom of the mountain, close to the forest.

Why I liked it is easy to explain. The air felt so clean compared to the city, and it was very quiet, with only birds and sometimes monkeys in the trees nearby. The house is simple but has a big open terrace where we sat and looked at the sea in the distance. It felt like a mini holiday, even though we only drove twenty minutes from my apartment.

Why I wouldn't want to live there is mainly because it's far from everything I need. The nearest shop is a fifteen-minute ride away, and there's no coffee shop or restaurant nearby. Quân said monkeys sometimes come down and steal food from the kitchen if the door is open, which sounds a bit scary to me. In typhoon season, the road can also be dangerous with falling branches. So it's a lovely place to visit, but I need my noisy, convenient city life more than I realised.

Lý do tôi thích nơi đó rất dễ giải thích.

  • LRThe air felt so clean compared to the cityThis uses simple, everyday vocabulary — "clean," "compared to" — to make a clear comparison without reaching for a more specific or sensory word like "fresh" or "unpolluted." It's accurate and easy to picture, matching the 6.5 target of plain, high-frequency description. It also sets up the general "why I liked it" reasoning that follows, staying at the same level of plainness as the rest of that paragraph.Đoạn này dùng vốn từ đơn giản, đời thường -- "clean," "compared to" -- để đưa ra một sự so sánh rõ ràng mà không tìm đến một từ cụ thể hoặc giàu cảm giác hơn như "fresh" hay "unpolluted".
  • GRAIt felt like a mini holiday, even though we only drove twenty minutes from my apartment. This is a basic complex sentence built with "even though," correctly signalling a contrast between the short travel time and the strong holiday feeling, but it's the only subordinating structure used and isn't combined with anything else. It's accurate and communicates the contrast clearly, which is what 6.5 grammar requires without further elaboration.
  • FCSo it's a lovely place to visit, but I need my noisy, convenient city life more than I realised. This single sentence sums up the whole answer's conclusion plainly, contrasting "lovely to visit" with "need my city life," without further unpacking what specifically about convenience matters most. At 6.5, this kind of direct, tidy closing statement is sufficient; a 7.5 answer might instead end on a more specific or figurative image. It does effectively balance the earlier praise of the house with the reasons for not wanting to live there, even if briefly.Câu văn duy nhất này tóm tắt toàn bộ kết luận của câu trả lời một cách bằng phẳng, tương phản "lovely to visit" với "need my city life", mà không diễn giải thêm cụ thể điều gì về sự tiện lợi mới thực sự quan trọng nhất.
Band 7.0

The answer develops each reason with one concrete supporting detail (no internet, relentless mosquitoes, the forty-minute drive to hospital) and closes with a balanced reflective sentence, showing more range than 6.5 while not reaching the vivid imagery or idiomatic touches of the 7.5 answer.Câu trả lời phát triển mỗi lý do bằng một chi tiết cụ thể hỗ trợ (không có internet, muỗi dai dẳng, bệnh viện cách bốn mươi phút lái xe) và kết bằng một câu suy ngẫm cân bằng, cho thấy phạm vi rộng hơn Band 6.5 nhưng chưa đạt đến hình ảnh sống động hay những nét thành ngữ của câu trả lời Band 7.5.

The home I'd talk about belongs to my friend Lan's grandparents, who live in a small village called Cẩm Thanh, just outside Hội An, surrounded by coconut palms and a river that floods every autumn.

I visited around two years ago, when Lan invited a few of us to stay for a weekend during the water coconut festival that the village holds every year.

Lan's grandparents live there with one of her uncles, in a traditional wooden house raised slightly off the ground on stone pillars, with a large open porch facing the river.

Why I liked it was mostly the pace of life there. Everything felt slower and quieter than in the city — no traffic noise, just birds and the sound of boats passing. In the evenings we sat on the porch drinking tea while Lan's grandfather told stories about the war, and the whole house smelled faintly of woodsmoke from the outdoor kitchen. It genuinely felt like stepping into a different era.

Why I wouldn't want to live there, though, is fairly practical. There's no proper internet connection, which would make working from home nearly impossible for someone like me. The mosquitoes in the evening are relentless, even with nets and sprays, and Lan mentioned that during heavy rain the river sometimes rises right up to the porch steps, so the family has to move furniture upstairs at short notice. It's also a good forty-minute drive to the nearest hospital, which worries me a bit given how old her grandparents are.

So it's a lovely place to visit for a weekend, somewhere I'd happily go back to for the peace and the stories, but living there permanently would mean giving up a level of comfort and convenience I've clearly got used to.

  • LRThe mosquitoes in the evening are relentless"Relentless" is a flexible, slightly less-common adjective, stronger and more specific than "a lot" or "very bad," that lifts a fairly mundane complaint about mosquitoes into a more vivid description. This is exactly the step above plain vocabulary the 7.0 lexical descriptor targets, without being an idiom or rare word. It's also placed among several practical downsides — no internet, flooding, distance to hospital — so the stronger word choice helps this particular complaint land with more force."Relentless" là một tính từ linh hoạt, hơi ít phổ biến, mạnh mẽ và cụ thể hơn "a lot" hay "very bad", nâng một lời phàn nàn khá đời thường về muỗi lên thành một mô tả sống động hơn.
  • GRALan mentioned that during heavy rain the river sometimes rises right up to the porch steps, so the family has to move furniture upstairs at short notice. This combines a reported-speech clause, "Lan mentioned that...," with a result clause, "so the family has to...," in one accurate, naturally paced sentence, handling two structures at once. It's the comfortable complex grammar the 7.0 descriptor describes, going beyond a single simple statement of fact about flooding. The detail about moving furniture "at short notice" also adds a concrete, lived-in specificity that supports the broader claim about why the speaker wouldn't want to live there permanently.Câu văn kết hợp một mệnh đề lời nói gián tiếp, "Lan mentioned that...", với một mệnh đề kết quả, "so the family has to...", trong một câu chính xác, có nhịp điệu tự nhiên, xử lý hai cấu trúc cùng một lúc.
  • FCbut living there permanently would mean giving up a level of comfort and convenience I've clearly got used toThe answer closes by balancing the earlier praise of the house against a considered, self-aware final judgement about the speaker's own habits, rather than a flat "it's a nice house but not for me." This reflective, evaluative closing point is what the 7.0 descriptor asks for beyond description; a 6.5 answer would likely just restate that it's impractical. The phrase "I've clearly got used to" also turns the conclusion inward, making it about the speaker's own limitations rather than just the house's flaws.Câu trả lời kết thúc bằng cách cân bằng lời khen ngợi trước đó dành cho ngôi nhà với một sự phán xét cuối cùng đã được cân nhắc, mang tính tự nhận thức về chính thói quen của người nói, thay vì một câu bằng phẳng "it's a nice house but not for me".
Band 7.5

The extended courtyard description and the closing postcard metaphor show sustained, precise imagery and idiomatic closing language characteristic of Band 7.5.Đoạn miêu tả sân nhà được mở rộng và phép ẩn dụ 'tấm bưu thiếp' ở cuối cho thấy hình ảnh chính xác, xuyên suốt cùng ngôn ngữ kết bài mang tính thành ngữ, đặc trưng của Band 7.5.

The home I'd describe belongs to my boss, who bought and restored an old French-era house in the old town of Hội An. I visited it for the first time this February, when she invited the whole studio for dinner after we'd finished a big project, and I've thought about it more than any building I've been in since.

She lives there with her husband and a very old dog, in a narrow house that goes back a long way from the street, with a courtyard in the middle open to the sky. That courtyard is the reason I loved it. You walk from a dark front room into this square of light, with a frangipani tree, mossy tiles that are probably a hundred years old, and the sound of rain on the roof tiles when the weather turned during dinner. The wooden beams are original, the doors are the tall folding kind, and she's kept it all simple — a long table, plain chairs, nothing that fights the house. As a designer, I appreciated that she'd resisted the urge to add anything.

Why I wouldn't want to live there is entirely practical, and she'd agree. The house sits on one of the main lanes of the old town, so from about nine in the morning until late evening there are tourists outside, photographing the door, occasionally trying to open it. There's no privacy at street level at all. Then there's the water: the old town floods almost every October, and she showed me the marks on the wall from last year's — waist height. Every autumn she moves the furniture upstairs. And a house that old needs constant repair; something is always leaking or rotting.

So it's a home I'd visit every weekend if she let me. Living in it would be like living inside a postcard — beautiful, and slightly damp, and never quite yours.

  • LRLiving in it would be like living inside a postcard — beautiful, and slightly damp, and never quite yours. This closing simile builds a full figurative image, "living inside a postcard," and then undercuts its prettiness with two ironic qualifiers, "slightly damp" and "never quite yours," which is a genuinely idiomatic and reflective way to close the story rather than simply restating that the house was lovely but impractical. A 7.0 answer would more likely state the trade-off directly, "it's beautiful but has a lot of problems." This image also gathers up two threads from earlier in the story, the courtyard's beauty and the flooding, into one compact, memorable sentence.Phép so sánh kết thúc này xây dựng một hình ảnh hình tượng trọn vẹn, "living inside a postcard", rồi phá vỡ vẻ đẹp của nó bằng hai từ giới hạn mang tính trớ trêu, "slightly damp" và "never quite yours", đây là một cách kết thúc câu chuyện thực sự mang tính thành ngữ và phản tư, thay vì chỉ nhắc lại rằng ngôi nhà đẹp nhưng bất tiện. Một bài Band 7.0 nhiều khả năng sẽ nói thẳng sự đánh đổi này, "it's beautiful but has a lot of problems".
  • GRAYou walk from a dark front room into this square of light, with a frangipani tree, mossy tiles that are probably a hundred years old, and the sound of rain on the roof tiles when the weather turned during dinner. This long sentence stacks three prepositional phrases and a relative clause, "that are probably a hundred years old," onto the main clause without losing control of the grammar or the meaning, which shows genuinely wide range rather than just one subordinate clause. A 7.0 speaker would likely break this into two or three shorter sentences to stay accurate; here the extended structure is used specifically to recreate the sensory experience of walking into the courtyard in one continuous movement. It's a clear example of the varied complex structures, mostly error-free, that the 7.5 descriptor asks for.Câu văn dài này xếp chồng ba cụm giới từ và một mệnh đề quan hệ, "that are probably a hundred years old", lên mệnh đề chính mà không đánh mất sự kiểm soát ngữ pháp hay ý nghĩa, cho thấy một phạm vi thực sự rộng chứ không chỉ một mệnh đề phụ thuộc đơn lẻ.
  • FCWhy I wouldn't want to live there is entirely practical, and she'd agree. The short aside "and she'd agree" economically brings in the homeowner's own perspective without a separate sentence of reported speech, moving the answer forward efficiently rather than through a more heavily signposted transition. This kind of compact, natural link is a marker of the 7.5 fluency descriptor's "good rhythm," where the speaker doesn't over-explain the transition between praising the house and listing its problems. It also subtly signals that the criticism isn't just the visitor's outside opinion, but one the owner herself shares.Cụm chêm ngắn "and she'd agree" đưa quan điểm của chính chủ nhà vào câu một cách cô đọng, không cần một câu tường thuật lời nói riêng biệt, giúp câu trả lời tiến triển hiệu quả hơn là qua một sự chuyển ý được đánh dấu rõ ràng.

  1. 1. How usual is it to visit people at home in your country?

    So sánh Band 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 cho câu hỏi này
    Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer states the point directly and links ideas with simple connectors like 'But' and 'because', staying close to modest, everyday vocabulary throughout.Bản 6.5 phát biểu quan điểm trực tiếp, nối các ý bằng các từ nối đơn giản như "But" và "because", giữ sát từ vựng bình dị, thường ngày suốt cả bài.

It's very usual, but it depends on where you are. In Hue, my parents' relatives often just drop in around dinner time without calling first, and everyone thinks that's normal and friendly. At Tết, almost everyone visits other people's homes for three days. But among my friends in Da Nang, it's different, because we usually meet in cafés instead. I think this is because our flats are small and a home visit feels more personal than coffee.

    • FCBut among my friends in Da Nang, it's different, because we usually meet in cafés instead. This uses simple 'But...because' connectors to link ideas step by step in two short linked sentences. A 7+ band would blend this into one clause using a parallel structure like 'partly...partly' instead of two separate sentences.Ở đây dùng các từ nối đơn giản "But...because" để liên kết các ý theo từng bước, tách thành hai câu ngắn có liên hệ với nhau.
    • LReveryone thinks that's normal and friendlyThe adjectives 'normal and friendly' are modest, everyday vocabulary. A higher band would reach for a more precise collocation, such as 'regarded as hospitality rather than intrusion', to say the same thing.Các tính từ "normal and friendly" là từ vựng bình dị, thường ngày.
    • GRAI think this is because our flats are small and a home visit feels more personal than coffee. This is a simple compound sentence built with 'because', with no subordinate or participial structures. A 7.5 answer would compress the same reasoning into an absolute clause like 'our flats being too cramped'.Đây là một câu ghép đơn giản dùng "because", không có bất kỳ cấu trúc phụ thuộc hay phân từ nào. Bản 7.5 sẽ nén cùng lý lẽ đó thành một cấu trúc tuyệt đối như "our flats being too cramped".
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer opens with the natural spoken marker 'Honestly' and uses a moderately complex 'partly...partly' sentence to explain the contrast between generations.Bản 7.0 mở đầu bằng từ đệm khẩu ngữ "Honestly" và dùng một câu có độ phức tạp vừa phải theo cấu trúc "partly...partly" để giải thích sự đối lập giữa hai thế hệ.

Honestly, it depends a lot on generation and location. Back in Hue, my parents' relatives still drop in unannounced around dinner time, which is seen as warmth rather than an intrusion, and at Tết, visiting from house to house for three days is almost compulsory. Among my friends in Da Nang, though, it's rarer, partly because our flats are small and partly because inviting someone home feels more intimate than just grabbing a coffee. So I'd say the countryside and older generations keep this open-door habit alive, while younger city people have moved their social lives outdoors instead.

    • FCHonestly, it depends a lot on generation and location. This spoken opener signals the speaker's stance before elaborating, which is more natural discourse management than the flatter 'It's very usual, but it depends on where you are' opening typical of a 6.5 answer.Từ mở đầu mang tính khẩu ngữ này nêu rõ lập trường của người nói trước khi đi vào chi tiết, thể hiện khả năng tổ chức diễn ngôn tự nhiên hơn câu mở đầu bằng phẳng hơn của bản 6.5, "It's very usual, but it depends on where you are".
    • LRwhich is seen as warmth rather than an intrusionThis is a mild collocation ('seen as warmth') rather than plain wording like 'thinks that's normal and friendly'. It is not yet as idiomatic as a 7.5 answer's 'regarded as hospitality rather than intrusion'.Đây là một cách kết hợp từ nhẹ nhàng ("seen as warmth"), thay vì cách diễn đạt bình dị như "thinks that's normal and friendly". Nó vẫn chưa mang tính thành ngữ bằng "regarded as hospitality rather than intrusion" ở bản 7.5.
    • GRApartly because our flats are small and partly because inviting someone home feels more intimate than just grabbing a coffeeThe balanced 'partly...partly' parallel structure is a moderately complex sentence pattern, going beyond the simple single 'because' clause a 6.5 answer would use for the same reason.Cấu trúc song song "partly...partly" này là một mẫu câu có độ phức tạp vừa phải, vượt trên mệnh đề "because" đơn giản, duy nhất mà bản 6.5 dùng để diễn đạt cùng lý do đó.
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer uses the idiomatic collocation 'think nothing of turning up' and compresses two reasons into a single absolute clause with 'our flats being too cramped', giving it more flexible, compact grammar.Bản 7.5 dùng cách kết hợp từ mang tính thành ngữ "think nothing of turning up", và nén hai lý do vào một câu bằng cấu trúc tuyệt đối "our flats being too cramped", thể hiện ngữ pháp linh hoạt, cô đọng hơn.

It's remarkably common still, though the custom is fraying along generational lines. In Hue, relatives of my parents think nothing of turning up unannounced around dinner time and being fed on the spot — a practice regarded as hospitality rather than intrusion — and at Tết, house-hopping for three straight days is practically obligatory. Among my Da Nang friends, though, that openness has largely given way to café meetups, our flats being too cramped and a home visit carrying a weight of intimacy a coffee simply doesn't. So the tradition survives mainly in the countryside and among older generations, while young urbanites have quietly relocated their social lives outdoors. I do rather miss the unannounced kind.

    • FCthough the custom is fraying along generational linesThis concise evaluative aside is embedded mid-sentence rather than stated as a separate sentence, showing tighter coherence than a 7.0 answer, which would state the same idea plainly right after 'Honestly'.Nhận xét đánh giá ngắn gọn này được lồng vào giữa câu thay vì tách thành một câu riêng, thể hiện sự mạch lạc chặt chẽ hơn so với bản 7.0, vốn sẽ phát biểu bằng phẳng cùng ý đó ngay sau "Honestly".
    • LRthink nothing of turning up unannounced'Think nothing of' is an idiomatic collocation well beyond the plain 'just drop in' a 6.5 answer would use, and beyond the more literal 'still drop in' of a 7.0 answer."Think nothing of" là một cách kết hợp từ mang tính thành ngữ, vượt xa cách nói đơn giản "just drop in" mà bản 6.5 sẽ dùng, và cũng vượt xa cụm "still drop in" mang tính nghĩa đen hơn ở bản 7.0.

    Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer gives a direct list of gifts using plain connectors like 'If' and 'But', keeping vocabulary modest throughout.Bản 6.5 liệt kê trực tiếp một danh sách quà tặng bằng các từ nối đơn giản như "If" và "But", giữ từ vựng bình dị suốt cả bài.

Usually fruit is the safest gift, like a bag of oranges or a durian. People also bring boxes of sweets, biscuits, or tea. If it's the first visit, I often bring sweets from my hometown, Hue. At Tết, people give lucky money to children and sometimes a small kumquat tree. For a housewarming, a plant or something for the kitchen is common. But you shouldn't bring anything too expensive, because it can make the host feel embarrassed.

    • FCBut you shouldn't bring anything too expensive, because it can make the host feel embarrassed. This uses a simple 'But...because' connector chain giving one direct reason. A higher band would use 'since' plus an extra clause explaining the effect, such as adding that it also creates an unspoken debt.Ở đây dùng chuỗi từ nối đơn giản "But...because" để đưa ra một lý do trực tiếp.
    • LRthe safest giftThis is plain, modest vocabulary. A 7.5 answer would reach for a more idiomatic phrase like 'the fail-safe option' to express the same idea.Đây là từ vựng bình dị, khiêm tốn.
    • GRAIf it's the first visit, I often bring sweets from my hometown, Hue.This is a simple conditional clause with 'If', the most basic conditional form, rather than the non-defining relative clauses ('which is why...') used at higher bands.Đây là một mệnh đề điều kiện đơn giản dùng "If", dạng điều kiện cơ bản nhất, chứ không phải mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định mà các band điểm cao hơn sử dụng, như "which is why...".
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer adds the spoken marker 'Honestly' and a non-defining relative clause ('which is why I always turn up...') to link the habit to a personal reason.Bản 7.0 thêm từ đệm khẩu ngữ "Honestly", và một mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định ("which is why I always turn up...")

Honestly, fruit is the classic choice — a bag of good oranges, or a durian if you really want to impress. Boxes of sweets, biscuits and tea are common too, and for a first visit, I'd say bringing something from your hometown is a nice touch, which is why I always turn up in Da Nang with sweets from Hue. At Tết, people give children lucky money and sometimes a small kumquat tree, while for a housewarming a plant or a kitchen item works well. The one thing to avoid is anything too pricey, since that can embarrass the host rather than please them.

    • FCHonestly, fruit is the classic choiceThe spoken discourse marker 'Honestly' frames the opinion before the detail follows, a more developed opening move than the flat listing start of a 6.5 answer.Từ đánh dấu diễn ngôn khẩu ngữ "Honestly" đóng khung quan điểm trước khi đi vào chi tiết, một động tác mở đầu tinh tế hơn cách mở đầu liệt kê bằng phẳng của bản 6.5.
    • LRif you really want to impressThis is a moderately idiomatic conditional aside; it is less compressed than a 7.5 answer's version, which nests the same idea inside a longer clause as 'if you're aiming to impress'.Đây là một cụm điều kiện chen vào mang tính thành ngữ vừa phải; nó chưa cô đọng bằng bản 7.5, vốn lồng cùng ý đó vào một mệnh đề dài hơn, diễn đạt là "if you're aiming to impress".
    • GRAwhich is why I always turn up in Da Nang with sweets from HueThis non-defining relative clause links reason to habit in one sentence, a step up in complexity from the separate simple sentences a 6.5 answer would use for the same point.Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định này liên kết nguyên nhân với thói quen trong một câu, tiến thêm một bước phức tạp so với các câu đơn giản tách biệt mà bản 6.5 dùng cho cùng ý đó.
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer closes with an evaluative one-line contrast ('I didn't come empty-handed... I'm richer than you') and uses the less common collocation 'unspoken debt'.Bản 7.5 khép lại bằng một câu đối lập đánh giá cô đọng ("I didn't come empty-handed" so với "I'm richer than you"), và dùng cách kết hợp từ ít gặp hơn "unspoken debt".

Fruit is the fail-safe option — a bag of decent oranges, or a durian if you're aiming to impress — followed closely by boxes of sweets, biscuits or tea. On a first visit, bringing something from your hometown is almost expected, which is why I never arrive in Da Nang empty-handed, usually with sweets from Hue. Tết calls for lucky money for the children and, often, a small kumquat tree, while a housewarming favours something practical for the kitchen. What you conspicuously avoid is anything extravagant, since an overly generous gift embarrasses the host and creates an unspoken debt. The gift's real message is 'I didn't come empty-handed,' not 'I'm richer than you.'

    • LRan overly generous gift embarrasses the host and creates an unspoken debt'Unspoken debt' is a precise, less common collocation, well beyond the plain 'make the host feel embarrassed' a 6.5 answer would use for the same idea."Unspoken debt" là một cách kết hợp từ chính xác, ít gặp hơn, vượt xa cách nói đơn giản "make the host feel embarrassed" mà bản 6.5 sẽ dùng.
    • GRAfollowed closely by boxes of sweets, biscuits or teaThis compressed participial phrase stands in for a full clause, more flexible grammar than the simple standalone listing sentences ('People also bring...') typical of a 6.5 answer.Cụm phân từ được nén lại này thay cho một mệnh đề đầy đủ, ngữ pháp linh hoạt hơn các câu liệt kê độc lập điển hình của bản 6.5 (như "People also bring...").

I think yes, but only in a real emergency. Once, a friend came to my door at midnight after a breakup, and I was glad I opened it, because that's what friends are for. But most visits at any time aren't emergencies like that. Nowadays, home is a place where people rest after work, not somewhere to perform hospitality. So I think a short message before coming is more polite. My grandmother would probably think this is cold, but I still believe it's better.

    • LRthat's what friends are forThis is a common, everyday fixed phrase. A 7.5 answer would reach for something more literary, like 'that's the entire point of friendship', to make the same point.Đây là một cụm cố định thông dụng. Bản 7.5 sẽ dùng một cách diễn đạt mang chất văn học hơn như "that's the entire point of friendship" để diễn đạt cùng quan điểm đó.
    • GRAMy grandmother would probably think this is cold, but I still believe it's better. These two short clauses are joined by 'but', basic coordination rather than the more flexible semicolon or fronted structures used at 7.0 and 7.5.Hai câu ngắn này nối bằng "but", một cấu trúc song song cơ bản, chứ không phải cấu trúc linh hoạt hơn dùng dấu chấm phẩy hoặc đảo ngữ mà bản 7.0 và 7.5 sử dụng.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer softens its claim with 'to be fair' and uses the contrastive structure 'rather than entertain guests' to add a touch of reflection.Bản 7.0 làm mềm quan điểm của mình bằng "to be fair", và thêm một chút sắc thái suy ngẫm bằng cấu trúc đối lập "rather than entertain guests".

In theory, yes, but in practice I'd say a bit of notice helps. A friend once turned up at my door at midnight after a breakup, and I was honestly glad I answered, because sometimes friendship means the door isn't locked. That said, most 'any time' visits aren't actual emergencies, and homes have become places where people recover from the day rather than entertain guests. A quick message beforehand respects that without turning friendship into something you have to schedule. My grandmother would probably find this a bit cold, and to be fair, she might have a point.

In principle, yes; in practice, a little warning goes a long way. A friend once showed up at my door at midnight after a breakup, and I was glad the door wasn't locked — there are moments when that's the entire point of friendship. Most 'any time' visits, though, aren't emergencies, and homes have quietly become places to decompress rather than stages for hospitality. A message sent twenty minutes ahead honours that without reducing friendship to an appointment. My grandmother would likely find this attitude cold, and she may well be right. Still, a friend who's welcome at any hour is usually one with the good sense not to abuse it.

In the cities, most people live in tube houses, which are narrow and tall, usually four or five storeys, with a shop on the ground floor. There are also more and more apartment towers now, like the one I live in. In the countryside, houses are lower and wider. My uncle's farmhouse has just one storey, a tiled roof, and a big yard for drying rice. Older houses in the countryside also have a room for the family altar. Nowadays, some rural families build tube houses too, which I think is a bit sad.

    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer opens with the spoken frame 'Honestly, the city and countryside look almost like two different worlds' and uses a participial phrase to add detail without a new clause.Bản 7.0 mở đầu bằng khung diễn đạt mang tính khẩu ngữ "Honestly, the city and countryside look almost like two different worlds", và dùng một cụm phân từ để thêm chi tiết mà không cần mở một mệnh đề mới.

Honestly, the city and countryside look almost like two different worlds. In cities, the typical home is the tube house — narrow, four or five storeys, built on a strip of land about four metres wide, often with a family shop downstairs — and apartment towers like mine are becoming just as common. In the countryside, though, houses tend to be lower and wider, like my uncle's single-storey farmhouse, which has a tiled roof and a big yard for drying rice. What's changing is that rural families are now building tube houses too once they have money, which is efficient but honestly a little sad, since the yard usually disappears.

    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer uses the vivid metaphor 'sprawl rather than climb' and closes with a dangling participial clause, 'the yard vanishing along with half of village life'.Bản 7.5 dùng phép ẩn dụ sinh động "sprawl rather than climb", và khép lại bằng một mệnh đề phân từ treo — "the yard vanishing along with half of village life".

Cities and countryside might as well belong to different architectural eras. Urban homes are typically tube houses — narrow, four or five storeys tall, squeezed onto a plot barely four metres wide, with the family shop occupying the ground floor — alongside a growing number of apartment towers, mine included. Rural homes, by contrast, sprawl rather than climb: my uncle's single-storey farmhouse has a tiled roof, a generous yard for drying rice, and fruit trees dotted around the garden, with older houses centring on an altar room flanked by rooms for each generation. What's shifting now is rural families importing tube-house designs into villages once money allows, a trade-off that's efficient yet quietly sad, the yard vanishing along with half of village life.

I think distance to work and family is the most important thing, at least in Vietnam. I chose my flat because it's only a ten-minute walk to work, and that was a good decision, even though I regret the west-facing windows every afternoon. Honestly, distance to work and family comes first for most people here. I picked my flat mainly for the ten-minute commute, and I'd say that was the right call, even if I regret the west-facing windows every single afternoon. After that, I'd weigh safety, flood risk in a city like mine, and whether daily essentials — a market, a school, a clinic — are within walking distance. Price decides most of it, obviously, but what people tend to underestimate is the neighbours and the building's management, since a lovely flat above a karaoke bar is a mistake you only make once.

Distance to work and family tops the list for most people here, hands down. I picked my flat chiefly for the ten-minute commute, a decision I still stand by, even though I curse the west-facing windows every single afternoon. Beyond that come safety, flood risk in a city like mine, and whether daily essentials — a market, a school, a clinic — sit within walking distance, with price usually settling the matter regardless. What people consistently underrate is the neighbours and the building's management, since a gorgeous flat perched above a karaoke bar is a mistake you make exactly once. I'd also throw in light and air, since you feel their absence daily in a way price tags never register.

Finding somewhere to live is easy, but finding somewhere good and affordable is hard now. My colleague spent four months looking for a flat in Da Nang that wasn't too expensive for tourists, wasn't in a flood area, and wasn't next to a building site. In the end, she had to accept some problems. Land prices in cities have risen faster than salaries, so buying a home is difficult for young people. Renting is also hard because of short-term tourist rentals. In the countryside it's easier and cheaper, but there aren't enough jobs.

I think the government should make sure people have somewhere to live, but it doesn't have to provide a home for everyone. Near Da Nang's industrial zone, the government built social housing, so factory workers didn't have to sleep ten people in one rented room anymore. That's exactly what government should do, because the market alone wasn't going to help them. So the government should guarantee basic shelter and control rents and land prices. But if the government tries to control everything, it usually doesn't work well.

    So sánh Band 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 cho câu hỏi này
    Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer gives a plain two-part closing sentence joined by 'but' and uses generic phrasing like 'grew up very differently'.Bản 6.5 đưa ra một câu kết đơn giản gồm hai phần, nối bằng "but", dùng cách diễn đạt chung chung như "grew up very differently".

A lot, I think, and people often don't notice it. I have two cousins from the same family who grew up very differently. One grew up by the river in Hue, swimming every day and knowing all the neighbours. The other grew up in a tower in Ho Chi Minh City, and she never learned to swim and doesn't know anyone on her floor. The area decides your friends, your school, whether you walk or sit in traffic, and what feels normal to you. Adults can change this a bit, but children usually can't.

    • FCAdults can change this a bit, but children usually can't.This short, plain closing contrast is joined by 'but', a simple two-part sentence rather than the semicolon-compressed version, 'Adults can partly override it; children largely can't', that a 7.5 answer would use.Sự đối lập kết thúc ngắn, bằng phẳng này được nối bằng "but", một câu hai phần đơn giản, chứ không phải phiên bản cô đọng hơn dùng dấu chấm phẩy mà bản 7.5 sẽ dùng — "Adults can partly override it; children largely can't."
    • LRgrew up very differentlyThis is plain, generic phrasing. A 7.5 answer would use a more vivid idiom, such as 'turned out worlds apart', to describe the same contrast.Đây là cách diễn đạt bình dị, chung chung.
    • GRAOne grew up by the river in Hue, swimming every day and knowing all the neighbours. This simple sentence has two coordinated participial phrases, less densely packed than the colon-introduced parallel structure a 7.0 or 7.5 answer would use for the same comparison.Câu đơn giản này có hai cụm phân từ song song, chưa được nén chặt như cấu trúc song song dẫn bằng dấu hai chấm mà bản 7.0 hoặc 7.5 sẽ dùng.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer opens with a stacked, spoken-style list after 'Honestly' and uses a long 'while' clause with an inverted 'nor does she' construction.Bản 7.0 mở đầu bằng một danh sách khẩu ngữ xếp chồng ngay sau "Honestly", và dùng một mệnh đề "while" dài với cấu trúc đảo ngữ "nor does she".

Honestly, enormously, and often in ways people don't even notice. I've got two cousins from the same family who turned out quite differently: one grew up by the river in Hue, swimming daily and knowing every neighbour, while the other grew up in a tower in Ho Chi Minh City and never learned to swim, nor does she know anyone on her floor. The area you're raised in decides your friends, your school, whether you walk or sit in traffic, and what you think of as normal. Adults can partly override that, but children generally can't.

    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer uses the vivid idiom 'turned out worlds apart' and closes with a dash-linked generalising statement about 'setting the defaults for thousands of lives'.Bản 7.5 dùng thành ngữ sinh động "turned out worlds apart", và khép lại bằng một câu nối bằng dấu gạch ngang, mang tính khái quát về việc "thiết lập những mặc định cho hàng ngàn cuộc đời".

Enormously, and often invisibly. Two cousins of mine, raised in the very same family, turned out worlds apart: one grew up by the river in Hue, swimming daily and knowing every neighbour by name, while the other grew up in a Ho Chi Minh City tower, never learned to swim, and doesn't know a soul on her own floor. The area effectively decides your friends, your school, whether you walk or sit in traffic, how safe you feel, and what passes for normal in your head. Adults can partly override it; children largely can't. That's the strongest case for planning neighbourhoods with real care — you're not just building housing, you're setting the defaults for thousands of lives.
