IELTS Speaking Part 2

A Person You Recently Met and Want to Know Better

Gần nhất ra thi tháng 5–8/2026

Đề bài (cue card)

Describe a person you only met recently who you would like to get to know better

You should say:

  • who this person is
  • where you met him/her
  • what you talked about
  • and explain why you would like to get to know this person better

Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer moves through the cue-card points with plain factual statements ('We talked mostly about flowers and her job') and a simple coordinated sentence explaining how the conversation started.Bài mẫu band 6.5 đi qua các ý trên thẻ gợi ý bằng những câu phát biểu sự việc đơn giản ('Chúng tôi chủ yếu nói về hoa và công việc của cô ấy') và một câu ghép đơn giản giải thích cuộc trò chuyện bắt đầu như thế nào.

The person I want to talk about is a woman named Vy, who I met about three weeks ago at Chợ Cồn, a market in the centre of Da Nang.

I was buying fruit and she was setting up a small flower stall next to the fruit seller. We started talking because I asked her the name of a flower I didn't recognise, and she ended up telling me about several different kinds.

We talked mostly about flowers and her job, since she's been selling flowers at the market for about five years and grows some of them herself outside the city. We also talked a little about Da Nang, since she moved here from a smaller town nearby, like I moved from Hue.

I would like to know her better because she seemed very calm and happy with her simple life, which is quite different from my busy job in an office. She also knows a lot about plants, something I know almost nothing about, and I would like to learn from her. Now I stop at her stall every time I go to that market, and we always talk for a few minutes, so I hope we'll become proper friends soon.

  • FCWe talked mostly about flowers and her job, since she's been selling flowers at the market for about five years and grows some of them herself outside the city. The answer develops its point with concrete, factual detail — five years selling flowers, growing some herself outside the city — directly supporting the earlier statement that they talked about her job. This kind of straightforward factual elaboration, rather than reflection or evaluation, is the plain but adequate development style Band 6.5 fluency is built around.Câu trả lời phát triển ý của mình bằng chi tiết cụ thể, mang tính sự kiện -- năm năm bán hoa, tự trồng một ít hoa bên ngoài thành phố -- hỗ trợ trực tiếp cho tuyên bố trước đó rằng họ đã nói chuyện về công việc của cô ấy.
  • LRproper friends'Proper friends' uses everyday, informal vocabulary to describe a hoped-for future relationship, relying on 'proper' as a vague intensifier rather than a more specific description of what that friendship might look like. This kind of simple, common phrasing is exactly the plain lexical range Band 6.5 targets.'Proper friends' dùng từ vựng đời thường, không trang trọng để mô tả một mối quan hệ tương lai được mong đợi, dựa vào 'proper' như một từ nhấn mạnh mơ hồ thay vì một mô tả cụ thể hơn về mối quan hệ đó có thể trông như thế nào. Kiểu diễn đạt đơn giản, thông dụng này chính xác là phạm vi từ vựng đơn giản mà Band 6.5 nhắm tới.
  • GRAWe started talking because I asked her the name of a flower I didn't recognise, and she ended up telling me about several different kinds. Two clauses are joined by 'and' — asking about the flower's name, and Vy responding with detail — forming a basic coordinated sentence that reports the exchange in sequence without any subordination. This accurate but structurally simple coordination is characteristic of Band 6.5 grammatical range.
Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer uses a natural collocation ('run into her again') and develops its main point with a specific concrete image (the copied shopfront sign), matching the fluent, moderately complex Band 7.0 target.Bài mẫu band 7.0 dùng một cụm từ tự nhiên ('gặp lại cô ấy') và phát triển ý chính bằng một hình ảnh cụ thể (tấm biển hiệu cửa hàng được sao chép), phù hợp với mục tiêu trôi chảy, phức tạp vừa phải của band 7.0.

The person I want to talk about is a woman called Thu, who I met about a month ago at a small coffee shop near my office in Da Nang.

I was sitting outside waiting for my coffee, and she was painting a mural on the wall right next to the tables. I asked her how long it usually takes to finish something like that, just to make conversation, and we ended up talking for almost half an hour while my coffee went cold.

We mostly talked about her work, since it turns out she paints murals for cafés and small shops all around the city, usually based on old photos the owners give her of the area. We also talked a bit about Da Nang in general, comparing how different parts of the city have changed, since she grew up here and I only moved from Hue a few years ago.

I'd like to get to know her better mainly because she sees the city so differently from me. I walk past the same buildings every day without really noticing them, but she pointed out details on that one wall, like an old shopfront sign she'd copied exactly, that I'd genuinely never registered before. There's also something appealing about how relaxed she seemed about her job, painting outside in the heat with people watching her the whole time, which is completely different from the way I work, stuck behind a screen indoors.

Since that conversation, I've gone back to that café a couple of times hoping to run into her again, and I think I'll ask for her contact details properly next time, instead of just hoping it happens naturally.

  • LRrun into her again'Run into her again' uses the phrasal verb for a chance encounter, correctly distinguishing an unplanned meeting from a deliberately arranged one — which matters here, since the speaker has been deliberately returning to the café hoping for exactly this 'accidental' outcome.
  • FCshe pointed out details on that one wall, like an old shopfront sign she'd copied exactly, that I'd genuinely never registered beforeThe general claim that Thu 'sees the city differently' is immediately grounded in one specific, visual example — an old shopfront sign she'd copied exactly onto the mural — rather than left as an abstract compliment. This reason-plus-concrete-example structure is precisely the development pattern the Band 7.0 descriptor asks for, turning a vague impression into something the listener can actually picture.Về việc Thu 'sees the city differently', tuyên bố chung này ngay lập tức được đặt nền tảng bằng một ví dụ cụ thể, trực quan — một biển hiệu cửa hàng cũ mà cô đã sao chép chính xác lên bức tranh tường — thay vì để nó lại như một lời khen trừu tượng.
  • GRAThere's also something appealing about how relaxed she seemed about her job, painting outside in the heat with people watching her the whole time, which is completely different from the way I work, stuck behind a screen indoors. The sentence combines a participial clause describing Thu's work ('painting outside in the heat with people watching her') with a relative clause drawing an explicit contrast to the speaker's own job ('stuck behind a screen indoors'). Holding both structures together accurately in one sentence, so the comparison and the description happen simultaneously rather than in separate steps, is the comfortable complexity typical of Band 7.0 grammar.Câu này kết hợp một mệnh đề phân từ mô tả công việc của Thu ('painting outside in the heat with people watching her') với một mệnh đề quan hệ đưa ra một sự đối lập rõ ràng với công việc của chính người nói ('stuck behind a screen indoors').
Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer opens with a vivid, specific image ('reaching for the same book') and closes with a dry, practical aside ('That seems worth following up, and I have his number.') that undercuts its own reflectiveness in a controlled, idiomatic way.Bài mẫu band 7.5 mở đầu bằng một hình ảnh sống động, cụ thể ('cùng với tay lấy một cuốn sách') và kết thúc bằng một câu bình luận khô khan, thực dụng ('Điều đó có vẻ đáng để theo đuổi, và tôi có số điện thoại của anh ấy.') làm giảm bớt chất chiêm nghiệm của chính nó theo một cách kiểm soát, mang tính thành ngữ.

The person I'd describe is a photographer called Hoàng, who I met only two weeks ago at the second-hand book stall that sets up near Han Market on Sunday mornings. We were both reaching for the same book — an old collection of black-and-white photographs of Da Nang from the seventies — and after a slightly awkward moment of politeness he simply opened it and started showing me things. That was the beginning of a forty-minute conversation standing between two tables of paperbacks.

He's in his forties, I'd guess, and he's spent the last three years photographing Nam Ô, the old fishing village at the northern edge of the city, which is being cleared bit by bit for a resort. He goes at four in the morning when the boats come in, and he's been photographing the same twenty families over and over, so that there's a record of what the place was before it becomes something else.

What we talked about was mostly that — how a city decides what to keep and what to erase, and how the official photos of Da Nang show bridges and beaches and never a fish market. But we also got onto design, oddly; he asked why every new building here looks like it was designed for a rendering rather than for a person, and I didn't have a good answer, which I've been thinking about since.

Why I'd like to know him better is partly selfish. He looks at the city I've lived in for five years and sees a completely different place, and I want to borrow that for a while. There's also a project in it, I think — his photographs deserve a proper website, not a Facebook album, and I'd like to build it. But mainly, in a city where I mostly meet people through work, he's the first stranger in years who made me lose track of time. That seems worth following up, and I have his number.

  • FCThat was the beginning of a forty-minute conversation standing between two tables of paperbacks.Instead of a generic wrap-up like 'we ended up talking for a long time,' the sentence gives a precise duration ('forty-minute') and a specific physical setting ('standing between two tables of paperbacks'), turning an abstract claim about connection into a concrete, visualisable scene. That level of grounded, specific detail closing the opening anecdote is the confident development the Band 7.5 fluency target rewards, since it shows the speaker building the story around remembered particulars rather than vague summary. It also efficiently establishes the setting for the whole answer before the response moves into Hoàng's background.
  • LRa slightly awkward moment of politenessThe phrase captures a fairly specific and hard-to-name social experience — two strangers both reaching for the same object and briefly negotiating who defers to whom — in four words, rather than describing the moment more plainly as 'it was a bit awkward.' Naming that kind of subtle interpersonal nuance precisely, with 'politeness' functioning almost ironically since the awkwardness comes from too much of it, is the sophisticated lexical resource the Band 7.5 target rewards over the more generic emotional vocabulary a 7.0 answer would use.
  • GRAThat seems worth following up, and I have his number. After a fairly reflective, almost philosophical closing paragraph about wanting to borrow Hoàng's way of seeing the city, the answer ends with a short, practical, faintly dry statement — 'and I have his number' — deliberately stepping back down from the reflective register into something plain and concrete. That contrast in register, controlled well enough to read as a deliberate tonal choice rather than an inconsistency, is the kind of confident, idiomatic sentence-ending the Band 7.5 grammar and coherence target rewards. The plain final clause also gives the whole response a grounded, slightly understated finish rather than ending on abstraction.

    Band 6.5

Opens with the flat frame 'I think being friendly is important, but', a clear but plain way of stating the central distinction.Mở đầu bằng khung câu trần trụi 'I think being friendly is important, but', một cách rõ ràng nhưng đơn giản để nêu sự phân biệt cốt lõi.

I think being friendly is important, but colleagues don't need to be close friends. At my studio, two people clearly don't like each other, but they still produce our best work when they're paired together. They respect each other's judgement and stay professional. I think trust and basic warmth matter most, like covering for someone or disagreeing without it becoming personal. Real friendship at work is nice when it happens, but it can also cause problems, like people forming small groups or feeling awkward if one gets promoted.

    • FCbut colleagues don't need to be close friendsThe 6.5 answer states the key distinction as a full clause joined by 'but'. The 7.0 answer compresses the same idea into a punchier fragment, 'friendly, yes, but friends, not necessarily', and 7.5 tightens it even further with a semicolon, 'Friendly, yes; friends, not necessarily', each version more economical than the last.Câu trả lời ở band 6.5 diễn đạt sự phân biệt cốt lõi thành một mệnh đề đầy đủ nối bằng 'but'. Câu trả lời ở band 7.0 nén cùng ý thành một cụm từ mạnh mẽ hơn, 'friendly, yes, but friends, not necessarily', còn band 7.5 siết chặt hơn nữa bằng dấu chấm phẩy, 'Friendly, yes; friends, not necessarily', mỗi phiên bản đều tiết kiệm hơn phiên bản trước.
    • LRclearly don't like each otherThis is plain, direct phrasing. The 7.0 answer's 'quite clearly don't get on' swaps in a more idiomatic verb phrase, and the 7.5 answer returns to 'don't like each other' but gains its polish elsewhere, showing that lexical upgrades aren't always about swapping every word.Đây là cách diễn đạt đơn giản, trực tiếp. Câu trả lời ở band 7.0 dùng 'quite clearly don't get on', một cụm động từ mang tính thành ngữ hơn, còn band 7.5 quay lại dùng 'don't like each other' nhưng lại trau chuốt ở chỗ khác, cho thấy việc nâng cấp từ vựng không phải lúc nào cũng có nghĩa là thay mọi từ.
    • GRAThey respect each other's judgement and stay professional. This is a short, simple sentence joined by 'and'. The 7.5 answer folds a similar idea into a longer sentence using 'simply because', embedding the reason directly into the main clause rather than stating it separately.Đây là một câu ngắn, đơn giản nối bằng 'and'. Câu trả lời ở band 7.5 gộp một ý tương tự vào một câu dài hơn bằng 'simply because', lồng lý do trực tiếp vào mệnh đề chính thay vì nêu riêng.
    Band 7.0

The opening fragment 'friendly, yes, but friends, not necessarily' is a punchier, more spoken-sounding structure than the fuller sentence used at 6.5.Cụm mở đầu 'friendly, yes, but friends, not necessarily' là một cấu trúc mạnh mẽ hơn, nghe tự nhiên như lời nói hơn so với câu đầy đủ hơn được dùng ở band 6.5.

I'd say friendly, yes, but friends, not necessarily. Two people at my studio quite clearly don't get on, and yet they still produce our best work when they're paired, because they respect each other's judgement and keep things professional. What really matters, I think, is trust and basic warmth — that you'd cover for someone, or disagree without it turning personal. Genuine friendship at work is lovely when it happens, and it makes long projects more bearable, but it can also create problems, like cliques forming or awkwardness once someone gets promoted. So a workplace probably just needs enough friendliness to make people want to come in.

    • FCWhat really matters, I think, is trust and basic warmthInserting the hedge 'I think' mid-sentence, between 'matters' and 'is', is a more integrated move than a sentence-initial hedge would be. The 7.5 answer achieves an almost identical effect with 'What matters, I'd argue, is trust and basic warmth', showing the two upper bands share this technique closely.Chèn rào đón 'I think' giữa câu, giữa 'matters' và 'is', là một bước lồng ghép hơn so với rào đón đặt ở đầu câu. Câu trả lời ở band 7.5 đạt hiệu quả gần như giống hệt với 'What matters, I'd argue, is trust and basic warmth', cho thấy hai band cao chia sẻ kỹ thuật này khá sát nhau.
    • LRkeep things professionalThis is clear, workable phrasing. The 7.5 answer's 'keep it professional' is nearly identical, showing that the gap between 7.0 and 7.5 here lies more in sentence rhythm and closing imagery than in this particular phrase.Đây là cách diễn đạt rõ ràng, dùng được.
    • GRAthat you'd cover for someone, or disagree without it turning personalThis uses two parallel clauses joined by 'or', a moderately complex structure. The 7.5 answer repeats 'that' before each clause instead of using 'or', 'that you'd cover for someone, that you can disagree without it becoming personal', a subtly more rhetorical, parallel construction.Đoạn này dùng hai mệnh đề song song nối bằng 'or', một cấu trúc phức tạp vừa phải. Câu trả lời ở band 7.5 lặp lại 'that' trước mỗi mệnh đề thay vì dùng 'or', 'that you'd cover for someone, that you can disagree without it becoming personal', một cấu trúc mang tính tu từ, song song tinh tế hơn.
    Band 7.5

The closing image, 'so much friendship that decisions start getting made in a group chat', gives the answer a vivid, contemporary final detail beyond the plainer endings of the lower bands.Hình ảnh kết thúc 'so much friendship that decisions start getting made in a group chat' mang lại cho câu trả lời một chi tiết kết thúc sống động, mang tính đương đại, vượt qua phần kết giản dị hơn ở các band thấp hơn.

Friendly, yes; friends, not necessarily. Two people at my studio quite clearly don't like each other, and they still produce our best work when they're paired, simply because they respect each other's judgement and keep it professional. What matters, I'd argue, is trust and basic warmth — that you'd cover for someone, that you can disagree without it becoming personal. Genuine friendship at work is lovely when it happens, and it makes long projects genuinely bearable, but it also creates its own problems: cliques, difficulty giving honest feedback, awkwardness when one person gets promoted over another. A workplace probably needs just enough friendliness that people want to come in, and not so much friendship that decisions start getting made in a group chat.

    Vì sao đạt band này

    • FCFriendly, yes; friends, not necessarily. This semicolon-linked opening fragment is even more compact than the 7.0 answer's comma-linked version, dispensing with 'I'd say' entirely and trusting the bare contrast to carry the argument from the very first line.Cụm mở đầu nối bằng dấu chấm phẩy này còn cô đọng hơn phiên bản nối bằng dấu phẩy ở band 7.0, bỏ hẳn 'I'd say', tin tưởng vào sự đối lập trần trụi để mang lập luận ngay từ dòng đầu tiên.
    • LRcliques, difficulty giving honest feedback, awkwardness when one person gets promoted over anotherThis three-item list of workplace problems is more specific and varied than the two-item list at 7.0, 'cliques forming or awkwardness once someone gets promoted', showing a wider range of precise, workplace-specific vocabulary.

    Band 6.5

Opens with the safe frame 'I think it slowly hurts people', a plain restatement of the question rather than a sharper opening claim.Mở đầu bằng khung câu an toàn 'I think it slowly hurts people', một cách diễn đạt lại đơn giản câu hỏi thay vì một luận điểm mở đầu sắc bén hơn.

I think it slowly hurts people, and they often notice too late. A friend of mine at an agency in Ho Chi Minh City realised at thirty that every friend he had was a colleague. When he changed jobs, his social life disappeared almost overnight. Putting work first can also make people worse at work eventually, because they become tired and have less to talk about. In Vietnam, there's extra pressure too, because long hours are often seen as loyalty. I think the healthiest people protect their social life instead of just filling gaps with it.

    • FChis social life disappeared almost overnightThe 6.5 answer states the consequence in a short, separate sentence. The 7.0 answer folds it directly into the previous clause with 'and when he changed jobs', and 7.5 does the same but drops 'almost' for a slightly blunter, more assertive claim, 'vanished almost overnight' becoming part of one continuous sentence rather than standing alone.Câu trả lời ở band 6.5 diễn đạt hậu quả thành một câu ngắn, tách biệt. Câu trả lời ở band 7.0 gộp nó trực tiếp vào mệnh đề trước bằng 'and when he changed jobs', còn band 7.5 làm tương tự nhưng bỏ 'almost' để có luận điểm hơi thẳng thắn, quyết đoán hơn, 'vanished almost overnight' trở thành một phần của một câu liên tục thay vì đứng riêng.
    • LRhurts peopleThis is a general, plain verb phrase. The 7.0 and 7.5 answers both use the more vivid, idiomatic 'hollows people out', a metaphor suggesting something being scooped away from the inside, considerably more precise and memorable.Đây là một cụm động từ chung chung, đơn giản.
    • GRAPutting work first can also make people worse at work eventually, because they become tired and have less to talk about. This sentence uses a 'because' clause to explain the claim, workable but standard. The 7.5 answer expresses similar ideas as a compact three-item list after a dash, 'tired, narrow, with nothing much to bring to a conversation', a more economical, listed structure.Câu này dùng một mệnh đề 'because' để giải thích luận điểm, dùng được nhưng khá thông thường. Câu trả lời ở band 7.5 diễn đạt ý tương tự thành một danh sách ba mục cô đọng sau dấu gạch ngang, 'tired, narrow, with nothing much to bring to a conversation', một cấu trúc liệt kê tiết kiệm hơn.

Câu trả lời ở band 7.5 đạt cấu trúc gần như giống hệt, cho thấy hai band cao hội tụ sát nhau ở kỹ thuật cụ thể này.
    • LRhollows people out slowlyThis vivid metaphor matches the 7.5 answer closely, both clearly ahead of the plain 'hurts people' used at 6.5, showing that this particular lexical upgrade appears from 7.0 onward rather than being reserved for 7.5 alone.Ẩn dụ sống động này khớp sát với câu trả lời ở band 7.5, cả hai đều rõ ràng vượt trội hơn cách nói đơn giản 'hurts people' ở band 6.5, cho thấy sự nâng cấp từ vựng cụ thể này xuất hiện từ band 7.0 trở đi chứ không chỉ dành riêng cho band 7.5.
    • GRArealised at thirty that every friend he had was a colleague, and when he changed jobs, his social life basically vanished overnightThis sentence links a noun clause to a further clause with 'and when', a fairly developed structure. People talk across teams, and someone might overhear a problem they know how to fix. Relaxed spaces also make people want to stay longer and help new staff feel comfortable. Some companies do this just to keep people at work, which is a bit cynical, but I think the best companies really are just buying good conversations.

Of my three closest friends, one is from school, one was a flatmate at university, and one I met at a pottery class at twenty-seven, and honestly the last one is probably the closest. School friendships can be deep, because you spend years together and know each other before adult life changes you. But they're also often based on being nearby, not on real choice, so many fade once that closeness ends. Adult friendships are chosen, which makes them different. I think what makes friendships close is going through something hard together and both staying.

I'd say I disagree, though I do understand why people think so. Of my three closest friends, one is from school, one was a flatmate at university, and one I met at a pottery class at twenty-seven, and the last one is probably the closest of all. School friendships definitely have advantages — years of daily contact, and knowing each other before adult roles hardened — and they can genuinely run deep. But they're also often built more on proximity than choice, and plenty fade once that proximity ends. Adult friendships, by contrast, are chosen, which gives them a slightly different kind of strength. What really forms the closest friendship, I think, isn't the stage of life so much as having gone through something difficult together and both stayed.

I think shared interests are useful at the start, but less important later. They give people a reason to be in the same place and something to talk about, like a class or a sport. But my closest adult friendship is with a nurse whose interests are almost completely different from mine, and it works because we're curious about each other's worlds. I think what really keeps a friendship going is shared values, like honesty and humour, not shared hobbies. People with the same interests but different personalities can run out of things to say once the interest ends.

    • FCVietnamese life makes it easy if you're willing. This short opening sentence states the thesis immediately and without hedging, a bolder move than the softened openers 'I think Vietnamese life makes it quite easy' at 6.5 and 'I'd say Vietnamese life makes it fairly easy' at 7.0.Câu mở đầu ngắn này nêu luận điểm ngay lập tức và không rào đón, một bước táo bạo hơn các câu mở đầu được làm mềm 'I think Vietnamese life makes it quite easy' ở band 6.5 và 'I'd say Vietnamese life makes it fairly easy' ở band 7.0.
    • LRgathers exactly the kind of people worth knowingThis precise, evaluative phrase about volunteering is more vivid than anything in the lower bands' lists, which don't mention volunteering at all, showing the 7.5 answer adding a genuinely new, well-chosen example.Cụm từ chính xác, mang tính đánh giá về hoạt động tình nguyện này sống động hơn bất cứ điều gì trong danh sách ở các band thấp hơn, vốn hoàn toàn không nhắc đến tình nguyện, cho thấy câu trả lời ở band 7.5 thêm một ví dụ thực sự mới, được chọn lọc kỹ.
    • GRAThe main obstacle isn't opportunity; it's that most of us look at our phones instead. This closing sentence uses a semicolon to balance two mirrored clauses, tighter than the comma splice at 6.5 and slightly more compact than the 7.0 answer's near-identical but hedged version, 'I'd say the main obstacle isn't opportunity; it's that most of us are looking'.Câu kết thúc này dùng dấu chấm phẩy để cân bằng hai mệnh đề đối xứng, chặt chẽ hơn cách nối bằng dấu phẩy ở band 6.5 và cô đọng hơn một chút so với phiên bản gần như giống hệt nhưng có rào đón ở band 7.0, 'I'd say the main obstacle isn't opportunity; it's that most of us are looking'.

    Band 6.5

States the age-guessing custom as a full sentence with 'If you get it wrong', a clear but slightly wordier structure than the dash-based versions above 6.5.Diễn đạt phong tục đoán tuổi bằng một câu đầy đủ với 'If you get it wrong', một cấu trúc rõ ràng nhưng hơi dài dòng hơn các phiên bản dùng gạch ngang ở trên band 6.5.

In Vietnam, the first sign of politeness is choosing the right word for 'you', which means quickly guessing someone's age in the first few seconds. If you get it wrong, you might seem rude about their age or their status. Besides that, the rules are pretty universal: listen more than you talk, ask about the other person first, remember their name, and don't check your phone. Body language matters too, like a small bow of the head. I think politeness is mostly about paying attention. People forgive small mistakes from someone who seems genuinely interested in them.

    • FCIf you get it wrong, you might seem rude about their age or their status. The 6.5 answer explains the risk in a full conditional sentence. The 7.0 and 7.5 answers instead compress this into a dash-marked clause, 'get it wrong, and you've either insulted their youth or their seniority', embedding the consequence directly into the previous sentence.Câu trả lời ở band 6.5 giải thích rủi ro bằng một câu điều kiện đầy đủ. Câu trả lời ở band 7.0 và 7.5 thay vào đó nén thành một mệnh đề đánh dấu bằng gạch ngang, 'get it wrong, and you've either insulted their youth or their seniority', lồng hậu quả trực tiếp vào câu trước.
    • LRmight seem rude about their age or their statusThis is a fairly vague, general description of the risk. The 7.0 and 7.5 answers both use the sharper, more specific 'insulted their youth or their seniority', naming the exact social error rather than describing it generally.Đây là một mô tả khá mơ hồ, chung chung về rủi ro. Cả band 7.0 và 7.5 đều dùng cụm sắc bén hơn, cụ thể hơn 'insulted their youth or their seniority', gọi tên chính xác sai lầm xã hội thay vì mô tả chung chung.
    • GRABesides that, the rules are pretty universal: listen more than you talk, ask about the other person first, remember their name, and don't check your phone. This sentence uses a colon followed by a four-item list joined partly with 'and', workable but standard. The 7.5 answer achieves an almost identical list but drops the final 'and', ending instead with a bare comma, 'remember the name, don't check your phone', a slightly more clipped, rhythmic effect.Câu này dùng dấu hai chấm theo sau là danh sách bốn mục, một phần nối bằng 'and', dùng được nhưng thông thường. Câu trả lời ở band 7.5 đạt danh sách gần như giống hệt nhưng bỏ 'and' cuối cùng, thay vào đó kết thúc bằng dấu phẩy trần trụi, 'remember the name, don't check your phone', tạo hiệu ứng ngắn gọn, có nhịp điệu hơn một chút.
    Band 7.0

The aside 'honestly' before the closing claim about attention adds a small spoken touch that the plainer 6.5 version doesn't include.Cụm xen 'honestly' trước luận điểm kết thúc về sự chú tâm thêm một chút sắc thái nói mà phiên bản giản dị hơn ở band 6.5 không có.

In Vietnam, the first act of politeness is choosing the right word for 'you', which means quietly guessing someone's age and status within the first few seconds — get it wrong, and you've either insulted their youth or their seniority. Beyond that, the rules are fairly universal: listen more than you talk, ask about the other person before talking about yourself, remember the name, and don't check your phone. Body language matters too — a slight bow of the head, and not too much eye contact with someone older. I'd add that politeness is mostly about attention, honestly. People forgive a wrong pronoun from someone who's clearly interested in them far faster than a perfect one from someone looking over their shoulder.

• FCI'd add that politeness is mostly about attention, honestly.Placing the hedge 'honestly' at the end of the sentence, after the claim, is a more natural spoken rhythm than the 6.5 answer's plain 'I think politeness is mostly about paying attention' with the hedge at the start. The 7.5 answer drops the hedge entirely, stating the claim with full confidence.Đặt rào đón 'honestly' ở cuối câu, sau luận điểm, tạo nhịp điệu nói tự nhiên hơn cách diễn đạt đơn giản ở band 6.5 'I think politeness is mostly about paying attention' với rào đón ở đầu câu. Câu trả lời ở band 7.5 bỏ hẳn rào đón, nêu luận điểm với sự tự tin hoàn toàn.
    • LRpoliteness is mostly about attentionThis phrasing is close to but slightly more developed than the plain 'politeness is mostly about paying attention' at 6.5, and matches the 7.5 answer's more compact 'politeness is mostly attention' almost exactly, showing gradual tightening across the bands.Cách diễn đạt này gần với nhưng phát triển hơn một chút so với cách nói đơn giản 'politeness is mostly about paying attention' ở band 6.5, và khớp gần như hoàn toàn với cụm cô đọng hơn ở band 7.5 'politeness is mostly attention', cho thấy sự siết chặt dần dần qua các band.
    • GRAget it wrong, and you've either insulted their youth or their seniorityThis dash-introduced clause uses present perfect tense for a hypothetical result, a moderately sophisticated structure.

    • FCpoliteness is mostly attentionDropping the preposition 'about' that both lower bands use creates a more compressed, almost aphoristic statement, showing confident control over how much can be trimmed from a sentence without losing clarity.Bỏ giới từ 'about' mà cả hai band thấp hơn đều dùng tạo ra một câu khẳng định nén chặt hơn, gần như mang tính châm ngôn, cho thấy khả năng kiểm soát tự tin về việc có thể cắt bớt một câu đến mức nào mà vẫn không mất đi sự rõ ràng.
    • LRinsulted their youth or their seniorityThis precise phrase matches the 7.0 answer exactly, both considerably sharper than the vague 'might seem rude about their age or their status' used at 6.5, showing this lexical upgrade is locked in from 7.0 onward.Cụm từ chính xác này khớp hoàn toàn với câu trả lời ở band 7.0, cả hai đều sắc bén hơn hẳn cách nói mơ hồ 'might seem rude about their age or their status' được dùng ở band 6.5, cho thấy sự nâng cấp từ vựng này được xác lập từ band 7.0 trở đi.

I think the internet has already changed what a friend can be. My sister's closest friend is a girl in Manila she met through a game and has never met in person, but my sister says it's a real friendship, and I've stopped arguing with her about it. I think the internet will make friendships less dependent on where people live, which is good for people who feel isolated. It will also make friendships easier to start and easier to end, so maybe friendships in general will become a bit less deep, even though there will be more of them.

    • FCbut my sister says it's a real friendship, and I've stopped arguing with her about itThe 6.5 answer reports the sister's view with the plain verb 'says'. Câu trả lời ở band 7.0 nâng cấp thành 'would say, without hesitation, that', còn band 7.5 giữ cấu trúc tương tự nhưng cắt gọn mệnh đề thuật lại hơn nữa, 'she'd say without hesitation that', cả hai đều thêm sự chắc chắn vào cùng luận điểm.
    • LRhas never met in personThis is plain, standard phrasing. The 7.0 and 7.5 answers both use 'has never seen in person', a slightly more natural and idiomatic collocation for this particular context.Đây là cách diễn đạt đơn giản, tiêu chuẩn. • GRAIt will also make friendships easier to start and easier to end, so maybe friendships in general will become a bit less deep, even though there will be more of them. This long sentence links a result with 'so' to a concessive clause with 'even though', workable but somewhat loosely joined. The 7.5 answer achieves a more compact version of the same idea using 'and' plus a tighter contrast, 'gets shallower while the number grows', showing more economical grammar.Câu dài này nối một kết quả bằng 'so' với một mệnh đề nhượng bộ bằng 'even though', dùng được nhưng nối hơi lỏng lẻo. Câu trả lời ở band 7.5 đạt một phiên bản cô đọng hơn của cùng ý tưởng bằng cách dùng 'and' cộng với một sự đối lập chặt chẽ hơn, 'gets shallower while the number grows', cho thấy ngữ pháp tiết kiệm hơn.
    Band 7.0

The aside 'without hesitation' inserted into the reported claim adds emphasis that the plainer reporting verb at 6.5 lacks.Cụm xen 'without hesitation' chèn vào luận điểm thuật lại thêm sự nhấn mạnh mà động từ thuật lại giản dị hơn ở band 6.5 không có.

I'd say it's already changed what a friend can even be. My sister's closest friend is a girl in Manila she met through a game and has never seen in person, and my sister would say, without hesitation, that it's a real friendship — and honestly, I've stopped arguing with her about it. The internet will probably make friendships less dependent on geography, which is a real gain for anyone who feels isolated where they live. It'll also make them easier to start and easier to abandon, so I suspect the average friendship gets a bit shallower while the total number of them grows. I think the next step is that people will deliberately go offline to form the deep ones, the way we now go to classes and clubs.

• FCand my sister would say, without hesitation, that it's a real friendshipInserting 'without hesitation' between commas mid-clause is a more developed way of expressing conviction than the plain 'my sister says' at 6.5. The 7.5 answer achieves a very similar effect, dropping only the modal 'would' for a slightly more direct claim, 'she'd say without hesitation that'.Chèn 'without hesitation' giữa các dấu phẩy trong mệnh đề là một cách diễn đạt sự chắc chắn phát triển hơn cách nói đơn giản 'my sister says' ở band 6.5. • LRI suspect the average friendship gets a bit shallowerThis hedge plus adjective is a natural, considered way of stating a prediction, more developed than the vaguer 'friendships in general will become a bit less deep' at 6.5.
