  • What type of history this person likes
  • How this person learns about history
  • And explain why you think this person likes learning about history.

Band 6.5

The answer is coherent and relevant but relies on a formulaic opening and simple single-clause sentences, keeping the language correct but plain throughout.Câu trả lời mạch lạc và đúng trọng tâm nhưng chủ yếu dựa vào phần mở đầu theo khuôn mẫu và các câu đơn một mệnh đề, khiến ngôn ngữ đúng nhưng mộc mạc xuyên suốt.

The person I want to talk about is my colleague Nam. We work together at the same software studio in Da Nang, and he sits two desks away from me. Nam is a few years older than me, and he has always been really into history, especially about the Nguyen dynasty.

He mostly learns about it by watching documentaries on YouTube during his lunch break. Sometimes he also reads books about old Vietnamese kings. He doesn't talk about it too much at work, but if you ask him one question, he can explain for ten minutes without stopping.

I think he loves history because his hometown is close to Hue, and he grew up visiting old temples and tombs with his grandfather. He told me once that learning about the past makes him understand his own country better. It's not just information for him, it feels personal.

Honestly, I really respect Nam for this. I don't know much about history myself, but talking to him makes me curious. Last month he explained the story behind a temple near his house, and I actually wanted to visit it after that. I think it's nice to have a colleague who is passionate about something outside of work.

  • FCThe person I want to talk about is my colleague Nam.The opening sentence restates the Part 2 task almost word for word, introducing the person before any detail about him is given, rather than opening with something more distinctive about Nam himself. This kind of formulaic, task-restating opening is extremely typical of Band 6.5 — safe and clearly organised, but showing no attempt at a more creative entry point, unlike a 7.0+ answer that might open with a specific detail instead. It does immediately orient the listener to who the story is about, which keeps the answer easy to follow.Câu mở đầu gần như lặp lại nguyên văn nhiệm vụ Part 2, giới thiệu người đó trước khi bất kỳ chi tiết nào về anh được đưa ra, thay vì mở đầu bằng điều gì đó đặc sắc hơn về chính Nam.
  • LRreally into history'Really into' is a common, informal way of expressing enthusiasm, chosen here instead of a more specific word like 'fascinated by' or 'passionate about'. This kind of default, low-effort phrase for describing interest — accurate and natural, but not precise — is characteristic of the plain lexical choices expected at Band 6.5. It nonetheless clearly sets up the rest of the answer, which goes on to specify that the interest is particularly in the Nguyen dynasty.'Really into' là một cách thông dụng, mang tính thân mật để diễn tả sự hứng thú, được chọn ở đây thay vì một từ chính xác hơn như 'fascinated by' hay 'passionate about'.
  • GRAHe mostly learns about it by watching documentaries on YouTube during his lunch break. The sentence is built from a single simple structure with one prepositional phrase layered onto the main verb ('by watching...'), rather than being extended with a subordinate clause explaining, say, why he watches during lunch. This basic sentence-building — one main clause plus one added phrase — is the typical shape of Band 6.5 grammar, in contrast with a 7.0 answer that might combine this detail with a reason or comparison in the same sentence.
Band 7.0

The figurative phrase 'a small piece of a puzzle he's trying to complete' and the conditional-perfect structure in the final paragraph give the answer more texture and grammatical range than 6.5, while remaining more restrained than 7.5.Cụm từ mang tính ẩn dụ 'a small piece of a puzzle he's trying to complete' (một mảnh ghép nhỏ trong bức tranh ghép hình mà chú đang cố hoàn thiện) và cấu trúc điều kiện hoàn thành ở đoạn cuối mang lại cho câu trả lời kết cấu và phạm vi ngữ pháp phong phú hơn mức 6.5, trong khi vẫn tiết chế hơn so với 7.5.

The person I want to talk about is my uncle, Phong, who lives just a few streets away from my apartment in Da Nang. He's in his fifties now, and for as long as I can remember, he's been genuinely obsessed with Vietnamese history, particularly the war period.

He learns about it mainly through old books and documentaries, but what makes him a bit different is that he also collects things - old photographs, letters, even a few coins from that era, which he picks up from flea markets or online groups. Whenever there's a public holiday connected to history, he'll usually visit a museum or a former battlefield site, sometimes dragging the rest of the family along with him.

I think the reason he loves it so much is that his own father, my grandfather, lived through that period and used to tell him stories as a child. For Phong, learning about history isn't just an academic interest, it feels like a way of staying connected to family he never really got to know properly, since my grandfather passed away when Phong was still young. He once told me that every object he finds feels like a small piece of a puzzle he's trying to complete.

Honestly, I really admire him for it. I never paid much attention to history at school, but spending time with Phong has slowly changed that. Last year he took me to an old fort outside the city and explained details I would never have noticed on my own, like the layout of the tunnels. It's made me appreciate having someone in the family who cares that deeply about where we come from.

  • FCHonestly, I really admire him for it.A brief evaluative statement opens the closing paragraph and signals a shift to personal reflection, the natural spoken development expected at Band 7.0.Một câu nhận xét đánh giá ngắn mở đầu đoạn kết và báo hiệu sự chuyển sang suy ngẫm cá nhân, đây là cách triển khai tự nhiên trong văn nói được kỳ vọng ở Band 7.0.
  • LRa small piece of a puzzle he's trying to completeThe extended metaphor of history as a puzzle Phong is trying to complete is a moderately figurative image, going beyond plain description of his collecting hobby into something more interpretive. This kind of controlled figurative language — used once, clearly, and tied to something concrete (the objects he collects) — is exactly the Band 7.0 target of a few flexible or imaginative phrases layered over everyday vocabulary. It also captures the emotional core of the story: that history is personal for Phong, not just academic interest, echoing the point made just before about staying connected to the grandfather he never knew.
  • GRAexplained details I would never have noticed on my own, like the layout of the tunnelsA relative clause ('details I would never have noticed') is combined with the conditional-perfect verb form ('would never have noticed'), a more demanding structure than a simple past-tense report of what Phong explained. This kind of layered grammar — relative clause plus a hypothetical perfect verb form, kept accurate — is part of the comfortable complex-structure range Band 7.0 targets, beyond what a 6.5 answer would typically risk. The added example ('the layout of the tunnels') grounds the abstract claim in something specific from the fort visit just mentioned.Một mệnh đề quan hệ ('details I would never have noticed') được kết hợp với dạng động từ điều kiện hoàn thành ('would never have noticed'), một cấu trúc đòi hỏi cao hơn một câu tường thuật ở thì quá khứ đơn giản về những gì Phong đã giải thích.
Band 7.5

The precise, topic-specific vocabulary describing 'symbolic meanings behind roof decorations' and the generalised closing insight about the friendship show the lexical precision and reflective development typical of Band 7.5.Vốn từ chính xác, mang tính chuyên môn khi miêu tả 'symbolic meanings behind roof decorations' (ý nghĩa biểu tượng đằng sau các họa tiết trang trí trên mái nhà) và nhận định khái quát ở đoạn kết về mối quan hệ thân thiết cho thấy sự chính xác về từ vựng và sự phát triển suy ngẫm điển hình của Band 7.5.

Actually, the first person who comes to mind is my friend Huy, who I met back in university in Hanoi. Huy grew up just outside of Hue, so we clicked right away, but what really stood out about him was his fascination with history-especially Vietnamese dynasties and war history.

Huy has this habit of digging into old documentaries and podcasts. I remember during our second year, he would invite a few of us to his dorm room for movie nights, but instead of the usual action films, he'd put on episodes about the Nguyen emperors or the French colonial era. He also reads a lot-sometimes he'd show up at the library with these thick, dog-eared books about historical battles or royal families. Lately, he's gotten hooked on a YouTube channel that creates animated retellings of famous events, which he always insists are way more entertaining than our old textbooks.

I think what drives Huy is just genuine curiosity. He once told me that knowing the stories behind places and traditions makes daily life feel richer, almost like living in a giant museum. When we visited the Imperial City in Hue together last year, he was pointing out details I'd never noticed, like the symbolic meanings behind roof decorations or hidden gates.

Honestly, I really admire Huy's passion. It's made me appreciate things I used to overlook, like the history behind street names or even the dishes we eat. He has this way of making the past feel alive, and I always end up learning something new just by spending time with him.

  • LRhe was pointing out details I'd never noticed, like the symbolic meanings behind roof decorations or hidden gatesTerms like 'symbolic meanings,' 'roof decorations,' and 'hidden gates' are specific, topic-appropriate vocabulary drawn from architecture and history rather than generic words like 'interesting things' or 'old buildings' that a lower-band answer might substitute. Using this kind of precise, subject-specific lexis naturally, without it feeling like a memorised list of terms, is the less-common vocabulary the Band 7.5 lexical target rewards. It also gives the anecdote real credibility, since the specificity implies the speaker genuinely absorbed detail from visiting the Imperial City with Huy rather than describing the trip in vague, general terms.
  • GRAhe would invite a few of us to his dorm room for movie nights, but instead of the usual action films, he'd put on episodes about the Nguyen emperorsThe 'instead of' phrase is embedded inside a longer sentence that first sets up an expectation — normal 'movie nights' — and then subverts it, rather than stating the contrast as a separate sentence like 'We expected action films, but he showed us history documentaries.' Building the contrast this way, inside a single flowing sentence with the habitual 'would' construction carried across both clauses, is the varied complex grammar the Band 7.5 target rewards over the simpler contrastive sentences a 7.0 answer would produce. The specific detail of swapping action films for episodes on 'the Nguyen emperors' also makes Huy's unusual dedication to history concrete and slightly amusing.Cụm 'instead of' được lồng ghép bên trong một câu dài hơn, trước tiên thiết lập một kỳ vọng — những buổi 'movie nights' bình thường — rồi sau đó lật ngược kỳ vọng đó, thay vì nêu sự tương phản bằng một câu riêng biệt kiểu 'We expected action films, but he showed us history documentaries.'
  • FCHe has this way of making the past feel alive, and I always end up learning something new just by spending time with him.The answer ends with a generalised, reflective insight about the friendship rather than a single anecdote, the evaluative closing typical of Band 7.5.Câu trả lời kết thúc bằng một nhận định khái quát, suy ngẫm về mối quan hệ thân thiết thay vì chỉ một câu chuyện đơn lẻ, đây là cách kết mang tính đánh giá điển hình của Band 7.5.

    Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer gives a direct opinion with one simple supporting reason and a brief example, relying on plain connectors like 'because' and 'So' rather than any natural hedging language.Câu trả lời band 6.5 đưa ra quan điểm trực tiếp với một lý do hỗ trợ đơn giản và một ví dụ ngắn gọn, dựa vào các liên từ đơn giản như 'because' và 'So' thay vì bất kỳ ngôn ngữ rào đón tự nhiên nào.

I think children should start around seven or eight years old, because that's when they can understand simple stories about the past. In my primary school, we learned stories about Hue's imperial history, and I still remember them better than the harder lessons I had later in secondary school. If the lessons are too difficult too early, children just get bored or confused. So I believe it's better to start with easy stories first and add more details later.

    • FCSo I believe it's better to start with easy stories first and add more details later. This closing sentence simply restates the opinion with the plain connector 'So', giving the answer a flat, linear shape typical of 6.5. A 7.0 or 7.5 answer would more likely close with a mild evaluative remark or a hedge like 'I'd say' rather than this bare restatement.Câu kết thúc này chỉ đơn giản nhắc lại quan điểm bằng liên từ đơn giản 'So', tạo cho câu trả lời một hình dạng phẳng lặng, tuyến tính điển hình của band 6.5.
    • LRlearned stories about Hue's imperial historyThe verb 'learned' is a modest, everyday choice for describing the school experience. A higher band would likely reach for a more specific collocation, such as 'eased us into' or 'introduced us to', to show finer lexical control of the same idea.Động từ 'learned' là một lựa chọn khiêm tốn, thường ngày để miêu tả trải nghiệm ở trường học. Một band cao hơn nhiều khả năng sẽ chọn một cách kết hợp từ cụ thể hơn, chẳng hạn 'eased us into' hoặc 'introduced us to', để thể hiện khả năng kiểm soát từ vựng tinh tế hơn cho cùng ý tưởng đó.
    • GRAIf the lessons are too difficult too early, children just get bored or confused. This is a basic present-tense conditional with a simple main clause, the kind of structure a 6.5 candidate can produce accurately but without variety. A 7.5 answer would be more likely to compress this into a fronted participial phrase instead of a textbook 'if' clause.Đây là một câu điều kiện thì hiện tại cơ bản với mệnh đề chính đơn giản, kiểu cấu trúc mà một thí sinh band 6.5 có thể tạo ra chính xác nhưng thiếu đa dạng.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer adds a touch of reflection with 'looking back' and the spoken hedge 'To be fair', plus one clearly complex conditional sentence, moving beyond the flatter 6.5 structure.Câu trả lời band 7.0 thêm một chút phản tư bằng 'looking back' và từ rào đón mang tính khẩu ngữ 'To be fair', cộng với một câu điều kiện rõ ràng phức tạp, vượt ra ngoài cấu trúc phẳng lặng hơn ở band 6.5.

I'd say around seven or eight, since that's roughly when kids can follow a simple timeline without getting lost. Honestly, my own primary school started us on stories about Hue's imperial past quite early, and looking back, those lessons stuck with me far more than the drier, more formal history classes I had in secondary school. If children are given complicated material too soon, they tend to just switch off. To be fair, I think starting with stories and gradually building up detail works better than rigid academic history from day one.

    • FCTo be fair, I think starting with stories and gradually building up detail works better than rigid academic history from day one.The spoken hedge 'To be fair' softens the final opinion and signals natural, in-the-moment reasoning, something largely absent at 6.5. It falls short of 7.5, though, since it doesn't add a sharper evaluative or idiomatic closing touch.Từ rào đón mang tính khẩu ngữ 'To be fair' làm mềm quan điểm kết thúc và báo hiệu lối lập luận tự nhiên, tức thời, điều phần lớn vắng mặt ở band 6.5.
    • LRthose lessons stuck with me far more than the drier, more formal history classesThe phrase 'stuck with me' and the comparative 'drier, more formal' show a step up from plain vocabulary like 'remember' or 'harder' used at 6.5. It is not yet a genuinely uncommon word choice, which is what would push it toward 7.5.Cụm từ 'stuck with me' và cụm so sánh 'drier, more formal' thể hiện một bước tiến so với từ vựng đơn giản như 'remember' hay 'harder' được dùng ở band 6.5.
    • GRAIf children are given complicated material too soon, they tend to just switch off. This passive-voice conditional ('are given... too soon') is a bit more sophisticated than a plain active 'if' sentence, showing controlled grammar variety expected at 7.0. A 7.5 response would more likely fold this idea into a fronted or participial construction rather than a standard conditional.Câu điều kiện ở thể bị động này ('are given... too soon') tinh vi hơn một chút so với câu 'if' chủ động đơn giản, thể hiện sự đa dạng ngữ pháp có kiểm soát được kỳ vọng ở band 7.0.
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer uses a fronted participial clause ('Throwing dense material at children too soon...') and a less-common collocation like 'academic rigor imposed prematurely' to sound more compact and idiomatic than the 7.0 version.Câu trả lời band 7.5 dùng một mệnh đề phân từ đảo lên trước ('Throwing dense material at children too soon...') và một cách kết hợp từ ít thông dụng như 'academic rigor imposed prematurely' để nghe nhỏ gọn, tự nhiên hơn phiên bản band 7.0.

Around seven or eight, I'd say, once children can grasp a rough timeline and start connecting cause and effect. My own primary school eased us into Hue's imperial history through vivid little stories long before secondary school buried us in dates and treaties, and those early tales, oddly enough, have stuck with me far more vividly than anything from the formal curriculum. Throwing dense material at children too soon just breeds confusion, or worse, boredom that puts them off the subject entirely. Building up gradually, from storytelling to structure, strikes me as a far sounder approach than academic rigor imposed prematurely.

    • FCthose early tales, oddly enough, have stuck with me far more vividly than anything from the formal curriculumThe inserted aside 'oddly enough' adds a genuine evaluative touch mid-sentence, a more fluent, native-like discourse move than the simpler hedges at 7.0.
    • LReased us into Hue's imperial historyThe verb 'eased' is a precise, slightly idiomatic collocation for a gradual introduction, more specific than the plain 'learned' at 6.5 or 'started us on' at 7.0.
    • GRAThrowing dense material at children too soon just breeds confusion, or worse, boredom that puts them off the subject entirely. This fronted participial phrase ('Throwing dense material...') replaces a standard 'if' clause with a more compact, flexible structure. Lower bands would more likely default to the plainer conditional form seen at 6.5 and 7.0.Cụm phân từ đảo lên trước này ('Throwing dense material...') thay thế một mệnh đề 'if' tiêu chuẩn bằng một cấu trúc nhỏ gọn, linh hoạt hơn. The 6.5 answer states the reason plainly with 'because' and closes with a simple 'I think if... fewer students would' sentence, using everyday words like 'boring' instead of a more precise term.Câu trả lời band 6.5 nêu lý do một cách đơn giản bằng 'because' và kết thúc bằng câu đơn giản 'I think if... fewer students would', dùng những từ thường ngày như 'boring' thay vì một thuật ngữ chính xác hơn.

Because it's often taught as just memorizing dates and names, instead of real stories about people and events. I remember finding history boring myself in secondary school, because the exams only tested facts, not why things really happened. It's even worse when teachers just read from the textbook. I think if history was taught more like storytelling, fewer students would find it boring.

A 7.0 answer would likely soften this with a phrase like 'I'd say' first.Câu kết thúc này truyền tải quan điểm trực tiếp mà không có từ rào đón hay dấu hiệu phản tư nào, tạo cho câu trả lời một sự mạch lạc phẳng lặng, giống như báo cáo, điển hình của band 6.5.

A higher band would vary this with words like 'dull' or 'tedious' to avoid repetition.'Boring' được lặp lại như tính từ mặc định xuyên suốt câu trả lời này, thể hiện phạm vi từ vựng hạn chế.
    • GRAI think if history was taught more like storytelling, fewer students would find it boring. The conditional here uses 'was' instead of the more accurate subjunctive 'were', a minor grammatical slip consistent with 6.5 control. Higher bands correct this to 'were taught', showing firmer command of hypothetical conditionals.Câu điều kiện ở đây dùng 'was' thay vì thức giả định chính xác hơn 'were', một lỗi ngữ pháp nhỏ phù hợp với mức độ kiểm soát của band 6.5.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer opens its personal example with the spoken hedge 'Honestly' and builds one longer 'I'd say that if... would' sentence combining a conditional with a linking clause, going further than the short, separate sentences of the 6.5 version.Câu trả lời band 7.0 mở đầu ví dụ cá nhân bằng từ rào đón mang tính khẩu ngữ 'Honestly' và xây dựng một câu 'I'd say that if... would' dài hơn, kết hợp một câu điều kiện với một mệnh đề liên kết, đi xa hơn các câu ngắn, riêng biệt của phiên bản band 6.5.

Often it's because history gets taught as pure memorization, endless dates and names, rather than as stories about real people making real decisions. Honestly, I found it pretty dull myself in secondary school, mainly because the exams rewarded memorizing facts rather than actually understanding why events happened. It doesn't help when teachers simply read from the textbook, compared with ones who manage to connect the past to something students genuinely care about now. I'd say that if history were taught more like storytelling, with real cause and consequence, far fewer students would find it so tedious.

    Band 7.5

More often than not, it's because history gets reduced to rote memorization, dates and names drilled in rather than the genuinely gripping stories behind them. I found it fairly tedious myself in secondary school, largely because the exams rewarded regurgitating facts over actually grasping why events unfolded the way they did. Teachers who lean on reading straight from the textbook only compound the problem, especially next to ones who tie the past to something students genuinely care about. Taught more like storytelling, with real cause bleeding into consequence, history would lose a lot of the tedium so many students currently associate it with.

Yes, definitely, it's a big reason for many tourists. Hue, where I'm from, attracts a lot of visitors because of its old imperial citadel and royal tombs. People travel a long way just to see them. I've noticed foreign tourists sometimes seem more interested in this history than local people are, which is a bit strange. History gives a place its own identity, which a beach or shopping mall can't really offer, so it does affect where people choose to travel.

    • FCPeople travel a long way just to see them. This short, separate sentence sits apart from the sentence before it instead of being linked into a longer, flowing structure. A 7.0 or 7.5 answer would more likely fold this detail into the previous sentence using a relative clause.Câu ngắn, riêng biệt này tách rời khỏi câu trước nó thay vì được nối vào một cấu trúc dài hơn, trôi chảy hơn.
    • LRHistory gives a place its own identity'Gives a place its own identity' is a plain, everyday way of expressing this idea. A higher band would likely use a more specific word such as 'distinct' paired with a stronger verb than 'gives'.'Gives a place its own identity' là một cách diễn đạt đơn giản, thường ngày cho ý tưởng này.
    • GRAI've noticed foreign tourists sometimes seem more interested in this history than local people are, which is a bit strange. This comparative sentence is accurate but grammatically straightforward, ending in a simple 'which' clause. Higher bands tend to replace 'a bit strange' with a more specific adverb like 'ironic' embedded more tightly into the sentence.Câu so sánh này chính xác nhưng ngữ pháp trực tiếp, kết thúc bằng một mệnh đề 'which' đơn giản.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer opens the irony with the spoken marker 'Honestly' and packs the closing point into one longer 'To be fair...' sentence with two linked clauses, showing more control than the short sentences of the 6.5 version.Câu trả lời band 7.0 mở đầu sự trớ trêu bằng từ đánh dấu mang tính khẩu ngữ 'Honestly' và gói gọn điểm kết thúc vào một câu 'To be fair...' dài hơn với hai mệnh đề liên kết, thể hiện sự kiểm soát nhiều hơn các câu ngắn của phiên bản band 6.5.

Definitely, yes, I'd say it's actually a major draw in plenty of cases. Hue, where I'm from, attracts a lot of tourists specifically because of its old imperial citadel and royal tombs, places people travel a long way just to walk through. Honestly, I've noticed that foreign visitors sometimes seem more interested in that historical side of the city than we locals are ourselves, which feels a bit ironic.
    • LRattracts a lot of tourists specifically because of its old imperial citadel and royal tombsThe added precision word 'specifically' sharpens the plain 'attracts a lot of visitors because of' used at 6.5, showing slightly more careful word choice. It is a modest upgrade rather than a genuinely rare collocation.Từ chính xác thêm vào 'specifically' làm sắc nét cụm 'attracts a lot of visitors because of' đơn giản được dùng ở band 6.5, thể hiện lựa chọn từ cẩn trọng hơn một chút.
    • GRATo be fair, history gives a place a distinct identity beyond just scenery, something a beach or shopping district can't really offer, so it genuinely shapes travel decisions for a lot of people. This sentence links three clauses together with an appositive ('something a beach or shopping district can't offer') and a result connector 'so', more complex than the two short separate sentences used at 6.5. It shows solid command of a longer multi-clause structure.Câu này nối ba mệnh đề lại với nhau bằng một đồng vị ngữ ('something a beach or shopping district can't offer') và liên từ kết quả 'so', phức tạp hơn hai câu ngắn riêng biệt được dùng ở band 6.5.
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer fronts the participial clause 'Giving a place a distinct identity beyond mere scenery...' and uses the livelier collocation 'pulls in a steady stream of tourists' instead of the plainer 'attracts a lot of tourists' used at 7.0.Câu trả lời band 7.5 đảo mệnh đề phân từ 'Giving a place a distinct identity beyond mere scenery...' lên trước, và dùng cách kết hợp từ sinh động hơn 'pulls in a steady stream of tourists' thay cho cụm 'attracts a lot of tourists' đơn giản hơn được dùng ở band 7.0.

Definitely, yes, and in plenty of cases it's actually the main draw. Hue, where I'm from, pulls in a steady stream of tourists specifically for its old imperial citadel and royal tombs, sites people will travel a long way just to wander through. Ironically, I've noticed foreign visitors often seem more captivated by that historical side of the city than locals like myself sometimes are. Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer gives a simple 'but' contrast in its opening sentence and a plain phrase, 'some creative guessing', rather than a more formal term for the same idea.Câu trả lời band 6.5 đưa ra một sự tương phản đơn giản bằng 'but' trong câu mở đầu và một cụm từ đơn giản, 'some creative guessing', thay vì một thuật ngữ trang trọng hơn cho cùng ý tưởng đó.

It would definitely help, yes, but I don't think it could make a film completely accurate. Filmmakers often care more about drama and pacing than being historically correct, even with expert advisors, because a fully accurate story isn't always the most entertaining one. There are also gaps in history that even historians can't fill for sure, so some creative guessing is unavoidable. I think historian advisors improve the quality and reduce mistakes, but films still shouldn't be treated as completely factual.

    • LRsome creative guessing is unavoidable'Creative guessing' is a plain, informal way of describing how filmmakers fill historical gaps. A higher band would likely use a more precise term such as 'creative interpretation' to convey the same idea more formally.'Creative guessing' là một cách diễn đạt đơn giản, không trang trọng để miêu tả cách các nhà làm phim lấp đầy các khoảng trống lịch sử.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer opens the concession with 'Honestly' and uses the moderately formal collocation 'raises the baseline quality considerably', showing a step up from the plain 'improve the quality' phrasing at 6.5.Câu trả lời band 7.0 mở đầu sự nhượng bộ bằng 'Honestly' và dùng cách kết hợp từ trang trọng vừa phải 'raises the baseline quality considerably', thể hiện một bước tiến so với cách diễn đạt 'improve the quality' đơn giản ở band 6.5.

It would definitely help improve accuracy, yes, but I doubt it could guarantee anything close to complete accuracy. Honestly, filmmakers often prioritize drama and pacing over strict historical correctness, even with expert advisors involved, because a fully accurate story isn't always the most entertaining one. There's also the issue of historical gaps that even historians can't fill with certainty, so some creative interpretation becomes unavoidable either way. I'd say historian involvement raises the baseline quality considerably and cuts down on obvious errors, but audiences probably shouldn't expect any historical film to be treated as a purely factual document.

    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer uses the less-common, slightly formal 'notwithstanding' and a fronted, comma-set-off subject ('Historian involvement, I'd say,...') along with a dangling-style participial close ('leaving some creative interpretation unavoidable regardless'), giving it more compact, idiomatic grammar than the 7.0 version.Câu trả lời band 7.5 dùng từ ít thông dụng, hơi trang trọng 'notwithstanding' và một chủ ngữ đảo lên trước, tách bằng dấu phẩy ('Historian involvement, I'd say,...') cùng với một phần kết phân từ kiểu treo ('leaving some creative interpretation unavoidable regardless'), mang lại ngữ pháp nhỏ gọn, tự nhiên hơn phiên bản band 7.0.

It would certainly raise the bar on accuracy, yes, but I doubt it could ever guarantee anything close to full accuracy. Filmmakers routinely prioritize drama and pacing over strict historical correctness, expert advisors notwithstanding, simply because a scrupulously accurate story isn't always the most entertaining one. There's also the matter of historical gaps that not even historians can fill with any certainty, leaving some creative interpretation unavoidable regardless. Historian involvement, I'd say, considerably raises the baseline quality and weeds out the more obvious errors, though audiences probably shouldn't mistake any historical film for a purely factual document.

I think the huge amount of digital information will actually be a strange problem, too much rather than too little. Going through endless social media posts, deleted websites, and messy digital records could be harder than it sounds, especially as platforms shut down over time. Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer upgrades the plain 'huge amount' to the moderately formal collocation 'the sheer volume of digital information' and opens its closing sentence with the spoken marker 'Ironically', showing more natural reflection than the flat 6.5 ending.Câu trả lời band 7.0 nâng cấp 'huge amount' đơn giản thành cách kết hợp từ trang trọng vừa phải 'the sheer volume of digital information' và mở đầu câu kết thúc bằng từ đánh dấu mang tính khẩu ngữ 'Ironically', thể hiện sự phản tư tự nhiên hơn cái kết phẳng lặng ở band 6.5.

I think the sheer volume of digital information will actually turn out to be a strange kind of challenge, almost too much rather than too little. Sorting through endless social media posts, deleted websites, and inconsistent digital records could be harder than it sounds, especially as platforms shut down or change over time. There's also the question of what even counts as a reliable source when so much online content can be edited or faked.

Personally, I think people should start learning history quite early, maybe around six or seven. At that age, kids are naturally curious about stories and how things happened, so it's a good time to teach them the basics, like local legends or important events. For example, when my cousin Phuong was about seven, my aunt took her to the site of the Battle of Mang Ca in Hue. She didn't understand all the details, but she came back asking questions and wanted to know more about the city's old gates. Of course, the content should match their age, but starting young helps the knowledge stick.

The standard approach tends to be textbook-heavy and fixated on memorising dates and facts, which drains the life out of it for a lot of people. My younger cousin Ha, who was in grade nine in Hue, put it bluntly: she dreaded history classes because they amounted to reciting timelines for exams, whereas she genuinely lit up doing hands-on work — science experiments, group presentations, anything with a tangible outcome. That said, I suspect it's the delivery rather than the subject itself that's the problem; give students field trips or storytelling instead of a timeline to memorise, and a lot of that reluctance would probably disappear.

I think a lot of people find history boring because it often feels disconnected from their daily lives. If it's just memorising dates and names, it's hard to see why it matters. For example, my friend Trang in high school used to dread our history classes. She said the textbooks were just long blocks of text, with hardly any photos or stories about real people. It was just page after page of facts to remember for the next test. I understand her point, because without a personal connection, it's easy to lose interest in the subject.

Câu trả lời band 7.0 hòa nó vào 'I remember my friend Trang...', còn band 7.5 bỏ hẳn từ đánh dấu, phát biểu 'My friend Trang... used to dread our history classes for exactly this reason', liên kết trực tiếp với luận điểm trước đó.

    • LRa new sense of respect for the resilienceThis phrase adds the specific noun 'resilience', which is more precise than the general 'respect for the people' at 6.5. The 7.5 answer keeps this same noun, 'a new respect for the sheer resilience', adding only the intensifier 'sheer' for extra emphasis.Cụm từ này thêm vào danh từ cụ thể 'resilience', chính xác hơn cụm chung chung 'respect for the people' ở band 6.5. Câu trả lời band 7.5 giữ nguyên danh từ này, 'a new respect for the sheer resilience', chỉ thêm từ nhấn mạnh 'sheer' để tăng thêm sức nặng.
    • GRAOf course, not everyone finds those kinds of details interesting, but for me they connect the past to daily life now, which feels quite different from just memorising major political events. This long sentence links a concession, a main claim, and a relative clause together, showing solid control. The 7.5 answer achieves a similar scope but reframes the final comparison more actively as 'rather than reducing it to a parade of political events', a slightly more vivid closing image.Câu dài này liên kết một sự nhượng bộ, một luận điểm chính và một mệnh đề quan hệ lại với nhau, thể hiện sự kiểm soát vững vàng. Câu trả lời band 7.5 đạt được phạm vi tương tự nhưng tái định hình phép so sánh cuối cùng chủ động hơn thành 'rather than reducing it to a parade of political events', một hình ảnh kết thúc sống động hơn một chút.
    Band 7.5

The closing phrase, 'rather than reducing it to a parade of political events', gives the ending a sharper, more critical edge than the plainer comparisons in the lower bands.Cụm từ kết thúc, 'rather than reducing it to a parade of political events', mang lại cho phần kết một sắc thái sắc bén, phê phán hơn so với các phép so sánh đơn giản hơn ở các band thấp hơn.

Yes, I genuinely think it matters — understanding how people in the past actually lived is what turns history from a list of facts into something that explains how we got here. Last year I visited the Hoa Lo Prison Relic in Hanoi with my friend Phuong, and walking through the old cells, seeing how prisoners survived on almost nothing, made the past feel suddenly tangible, in a way no textbook date or name ever quite manages. It left me with a new respect for the sheer resilience people showed back then. Not everyone finds these small, human details compelling, admittedly, but for me they're what actually connects the past to daily life now, rather than reducing it to a parade of political events.

It frames the whole answer around a single, confidently stated idea from the very first sentence.Luận điểm mở đầu này dùng cấu trúc gần giống câu nhấn mạnh 'is what' để nêu luận đề với trọng lượng tu từ hơn các phát biểu đơn giản ở band 6.5 và 7.0. Nó đóng khung toàn bộ câu trả lời xung quanh một ý tưởng duy nhất, được phát biểu tự tin ngay từ câu đầu tiên.
    • LRa parade of political eventsThis is a vivid, slightly ironic metaphor for a dry list of dates and battles, considerably more original than the plain 'major political events' shared by the lower bands, exemplifying the more creative lexis expected at 7.5.Đây là một ẩn dụ sống động, hơi mỉa mai cho một danh sách khô khan các mốc thời gian và trận chiến, độc đáo hơn đáng kể so với cụm 'major political events' đơn giản dùng chung ở các band thấp hơn, minh họa cho vốn từ sáng tạo hơn được kỳ vọng ở band 7.5.
    • GRAin a way no textbook date or name ever quite managesThis closing relative clause uses a negative comparative structure, 'no... ever quite manages', a more flexible and idiomatic construction than the plainer comparative clauses used at 6.5 and 7.0.Mệnh đề quan hệ kết thúc này dùng cấu trúc so sánh phủ định 'no... ever quite manages', một cấu trúc linh hoạt và tự nhiên hơn các mệnh đề so sánh đơn giản hơn được dùng ở band 6.5 và 7.0.

Personally, I don't think it's necessary to learn ancient history before modern history, but it can help. For example, my colleague Quan is really interested in twentieth-century events, like the Vietnam War and the Cold War. He started with these topics and only later went back to ancient dynasties. He told me that understanding recent history made older events feel more relevant, because he could see how patterns repeat. Honestly, it depends on the person. Some people find ancient history too abstract at first, but as long as you become curious about the past, the order isn't that important.

    • FCHonestly, it depends on the person. The 6.5 answer inserts this reflection as a short, standalone sentence. Câu trả lời band 7.0 thay vào đó gắn thêm phần diễn giải đánh dấu bằng dấu gạch ngang trực tiếp vào cùng ý tưởng đó, còn band 7.5 lồng nó vào giữa câu bằng dấu hai chấm, 'It really depends on the person, I think:', cả hai đều thể hiện sự tích hợp chặt chẽ hơn vào mạch văn.
    • LRHe started with these topics and only later went back to ancient dynasties. This is plain, functional phrasing. The 7.5 answer's 'only circled back to ancient dynasties and early civilisations years later, almost as an afterthought' adds a more vivid, evaluative closing image to the same fact.Đây là cách diễn đạt đơn giản, mang tính chức năng. Cụm 'only circled back to ancient dynasties and early civilisations years later, almost as an afterthought' trong câu trả lời band 7.5 thêm vào một hình ảnh kết thúc sống động, mang tính đánh giá hơn cho cùng sự việc đó.
    • GRASome people find ancient history too abstract at first, but as long as you become curious about the past, the order isn't that important. This sentence links a contrast with 'but' to a conditional 'as long as' clause, moderately complex. The 7.5 answer achieves a similar structure but with more elaborate phrasing throughout, including the closing 'strikes me as fairly beside the point', showing a further step in grammatical and lexical ambition.Câu này nối một sự tương phản bằng 'but' với một mệnh đề điều kiện 'as long as', phức tạp vừa phải. Câu trả lời band 7.5 đạt được cấu trúc tương tự nhưng với cách diễn đạt tinh tế hơn xuyên suốt, bao gồm phần kết 'strikes me as fairly beside the point', thể hiện một bước tiến xa hơn về tham vọng ngữ pháp và từ vựng.

    • FCHonestly, it depends a lot on the person — some might find ancient history too abstract at firstThis dash-marked structure integrates the qualification directly into the sentence, smoother than the 6.5 answer's separate short sentence. The 7.5 answer achieves a similar effect using a colon instead of a dash, 'depends on the person, I think:', showing a comparable but slightly more formal cohesive device.Cấu trúc đánh dấu bằng dấu gạch ngang này tích hợp lời hạn định trực tiếp vào câu, mượt mà hơn câu ngắn riêng biệt ở câu trả lời band 6.5. Câu trả lời band 7.5 đạt hiệu quả tương tự bằng dấu hai chấm thay vì dấu gạch ngang, 'depends on the person, I think:', thể hiện một công cụ liên kết tương đương nhưng trang trọng hơn một chút.

Personally, I don't think ancient history has to come first, though I'll admit it can smooth the way. My colleague Quan is a case in point: he's genuinely absorbed by twentieth-century events — the Vietnam War, the Cold War — and only circled back to ancient dynasties and early civilisations years later, almost as an afterthought. According to him, starting with recent history actually made the older material feel more relevant, since he could already see the patterns repeating before he ever encountered their ancient origins. It really depends on the person, I think: some find ancient history too abstract to grip them at first, while others prefer building a timeline methodically from the ground up. As long as a genuine curiosity about the past takes hold somewhere, the order it arrives in strikes me as fairly beside the point.
