  • Who this person was
  • What skill he/she taught you
  • How he/she taught you
  • And explain how you felt about learning the skill

Band 6.5

The answer describes the process in plain, sequential steps ('mix... pour... steam') and states the resulting feeling directly ('really happy and proud'), a clear but modest structure typical of Band 6.5.Câu trả lời mô tả quá trình bằng các bước tuần tự đơn giản ('trộn...

The person who taught me a new skill when I was a child was my grandmother, who still lives in Hue.

When I was about nine years old, she taught me how to make banh beo, a small steamed rice cake that people eat in Hue. She taught me in her kitchen at home, on a Sunday morning when I was staying with her during the school holidays.

She showed me how to mix the rice flour with water, pour a little into each small dish, and steam them until they turned soft and slightly see-through. My first ones came out too thick and stuck to the dish, but she just smiled and showed me again without getting annoyed. She let me add the topping myself, the dried shrimp and crispy pork skin, even though I put too much on every single one.

I felt really happy and proud when I made a batch that actually looked like hers. It was one of the first times I felt I could make something with my own hands, not just eat what other people made. Now, whenever I go back to Hue and smell rice cakes steaming, I think of her patience that morning. I think that early feeling of making something carefully is part of why I enjoy design work today.

  • GRAMy first ones came out too thick and stuck to the dish, but she just smiled and showed me again without getting annoyed. Two ideas are joined with "but" — the failure of the first attempt and the grandmother's patient reaction — rather than through more varied subordination such as "even though my first ones came out too thick...." It's accurate and clearly sequenced, matching the mostly-simple-sentence profile of 6.5, and the coordination lets the two contrasting facts sit side by side without extra grammatical machinery. The plain phrasing also fits a childhood memory being retold simply, as a nine-year-old might have experienced it.Hai ý được nối bằng "but" -- lần thử đầu tiên thất bại và phản ứng kiên nhẫn của người bà -- thay vì thông qua sự phụ thuộc đa dạng hơn như "even though my first ones came out too thick....".
  • LRI felt really happy and proud"Happy and proud" pairs two of the most common emotion adjectives in English, intensified with "really," with no attempt at a more specific alternative like "accomplished" or "chuffed." This is accurate and appropriate for the moment described — successfully making banh beo like her grandmother — but it stays at the plainest available vocabulary rather than reaching for the one less-common word a 7.0 answer might add.
  • FCShe showed me how to mix the rice flour with water, pour a little into each small dish, and steam them until they turned soft and slightly see-throughThe process is laid out as a clear, ordered sequence of three coordinated actions — mix, pour, steam — with no evaluative commentary layered on top, which is a straightforward way to develop the description that suits 6.5 fluency. A 7.0 or 7.5 answer might interrupt this sequence with a reflective aside about how tricky the technique was. Here, the plain step-by-step account is easy to follow and stays entirely on-topic, which is exactly what 6.5 coherence requires.
Band 7.0

The answer develops the memory with one specific concrete gesture — the aunt finishing one wing while leaving the other for the child — and closes by linking the memory to the writer's adult career, giving fuller development than the 6.5 answer while staying less vivid than the layered detail of the 7.5 version.Câu trả lời phát triển ký ức bằng một cử chỉ cụ thể — người dì gấp xong một cánh trong khi để lại cánh kia cho đứa trẻ — và kết bằng cách liên hệ ký ức đó với sự nghiệp trưởng thành của tác giả, mang lại sự phát triển đầy đủ hơn bài Band 6.5, dù chưa sống động bằng lớp chi tiết của bài Band 7.5.

My aunt Thảo, who lived just a few doors from us in Hue, is the person who taught me a new skill when I was a child — I'd have been around eight. I was a genuinely messy kid back then, always knocking something over or covering myself in mud, and I think that's exactly why she picked origami, of all things, to teach me one rainy afternoon during the summer break — folding paper cranes.

She'd brought a box of coloured paper back from a trip to Hanoi, and we set up at her old wooden table with the window cracked open to the sound of rain outside. She walked me through each fold slowly, and my early results were closer to screwed-up rubbish than birds, but she never once got frustrated — she'd flatten the paper out and start the fold with me again, patiently, as many times as it took. I got to choose the colours, and whenever I got stuck partway through, she'd finish one wing herself and leave the other for me.

The moment I produced a crane that finally looked like an actual bird, I felt genuinely proud of myself, maybe for the first time about something I'd made with my own hands. That confidence carried over — I started folding little paper animals for my classmates and family for weeks afterwards. Looking back now, I think that afternoon planted something that's stayed with me into my design career, that same patience needed to get something right through repetition. I'm still grateful she bothered spending an afternoon on a clumsy eight-year-old instead of just letting me watch television.

  • FCI think that afternoon planted something that's stayed with me into my design careerThe answer links the childhood memory forward to adult life rather than stopping at the story itself, showing the fuller development expected at Band 7.0.Câu trả lời liên hệ ký ức tuổi thơ với cuộc sống trưởng thành sau này thay vì dừng lại ở câu chuyện, cho thấy sự phát triển đầy đủ hơn được kỳ vọng ở Band 7.0.
  • LRscrewed-up rubbishThe informal, slightly more vivid phrase goes beyond the most basic vocabulary to describe the failed folds, fitting the Band 7.0 target of a few more flexible word choices.Cụm từ không trang trọng, sinh động hơn một chút này vượt ra ngoài vốn từ cơ bản nhất để mô tả những nếp gấp thất bại, phù hợp với mục tiêu của Band 7.0 là có thêm vài lựa chọn từ linh hoạt hơn.
  • GRAwhenever I got stuck partway through, she'd finish one wing herself and leave the other for meA whenever-clause (marking a repeated, not one-off, situation) is followed by two coordinated main clauses describing the aunt's habitual response, combining habitual aspect ("she'd finish," using "would" for repeated past action) with coordination -- a comfortable complex structure that stays accurate throughout, matching the 7.0 target of a comfortable mix of simple and complex sentences. A Band 6.5 speaker would more likely simplify this into a single past-tense sentence describing one instance rather than a repeated pattern.
Band 7.5

The answer closes by tracing the childhood memory forward into the writer's adult career ('I think it even influenced why I enjoy design work now'), a reflective link rather than a plain summary, typical of Band 7.5 development.Câu trả lời kết thúc bằng cách truy ngược ký ức tuổi thơ đến sự nghiệp trưởng thành của tác giả ('tôi nghĩ nó thậm chí còn ảnh hưởng đến lý do tôi thích công việc thiết kế bây giờ'), một mối liên hệ mang tính suy ngẫm thay vì một câu tóm tắt đơn thuần, đặc trưng cho sự phát triển ý ở Band 7.5.

One person who taught me a new skill when I was a child was my aunt, Thảo, who used to live just a few doors down from my family in Hue. Back then, I was probably around eight years old, and honestly, I was a pretty clumsy kid, always getting messy and breaking things. My aunt noticed that, so one rainy afternoon during the summer holidays, she decided to teach me how to fold paper cranes-origami, basically.

She was really patient with me, and I remember she had this box of colourful paper she'd brought back from a trip to Hanoi. We sat at her old wooden table with the window open to the sound of rain, and she showed me step by step how to create neat folds. At first, my cranes looked more like crumpled balls, but she would just laugh, unfold them, and guide my hands through the process again. She didn't rush or get frustrated; instead, she had this way of making the activity feel like a fun little challenge. Sometimes she'd let me choose the paper, and if I got stuck, she'd fold one wing while I did the other.

Learning origami from her made me feel really proud, especially when I was finally able to fold a crane that actually looked like a bird. It honestly boosted my confidence, and I started making little paper animals for my classmates and family. To this day, that feeling of patience and creativity has stuck with me-I think it even influenced why I enjoy design work now. Looking back, I'm grateful for her encouragement and the time she took to teach me something new.

  • FCTo this day, that feeling of patience and creativity has stuck with me-I think it even influenced why I enjoy design work now.The time expression "to this day" signals a deliberate leap from the childhood anecdote to the present, and the speaker goes further by speculating about a causal link to their current career ("I think it even influenced..."), a genuinely reflective, developed closing move rather than a plain summary of the origami lesson. A Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would be more likely to end with how the story concluded (making a working crane) without extending it into present-day self-analysis.

I think children should learn new skills because it helps them become more confident and adaptable as they grow up. When I was in primary school in Hue, my neighbor Minh showed me how to ride a bicycle. At first, I was really scared of falling, and I crashed into a bush on my first try. But after a few afternoons of practicing together, I finally learned to balance and steer on my own. That feeling of riding without help gave me a big boost, and taught me that if I kept trying, I could figure things out.

I think the real value of learning a new skill as a child isn't the skill itself so much as the discovery that fear can be worked through rather than simply avoided. My neighbor Minh taught me that lesson literally, by teaching me to ride a bicycle when I was in primary school in Hue - I was absolutely terrified of falling, and true to form, crashed straight into a bush on my very first attempt. But somewhere across those repeated, wobbly afternoons of practice, balance stopped being a mystery and started being something my body just knew how to do. What stayed with me wasn't the cycling itself, which I barely think about now, but the quiet confidence that comes from proving to yourself, once, that persistence actually works.

I think children really benefit from learning basic social skills before starting school, like sharing and listening to others. These are even more important than knowing the alphabet at that stage, I think. For example, my cousin Phuong, who used to babysit me in Hue, would invite the neighbor's kids over and set up little group games in our living room. She would gently teach us to take turns, or remind us to say 'please' and 'sorry'. Looking back, those moments helped me feel more confident when I first started primary school. Every child is different, but a bit of practice interacting with others can make the transition smoother.

If I had to pick what matters most before school starts, it wouldn't be letters or numbers, it would be the small, almost invisible social choreography of taking turns and reading a room. My cousin Phuong, who babysat me as a child in Hue, taught me that without ever framing it as a lesson: she'd simply gather the neighbor's kids in our living room, set up some game, and quietly correct us mid-play, a gentle nudge to wait your turn, a reminder to say sorry when you bumped someone. It's only in hindsight that I recognise those afternoons as training - by the time I sat in a primary classroom full of strangers, getting along with other children already felt familiar rather than frightening. Alphabet knowledge, I suspect, catches up fast; social ease, if you arrive without any, takes considerably longer.

I think the trick for parents and teachers is resisting the urge to explain something before letting a child botch it themselves first - explanation sticks far better once there's already a mess to make sense of. My grade five teacher, Ms. Thuy, understood this instinctively: rather than lecturing us on stitching theory, she handed out mismatched thread and old scraps of cloth and had us sew our own fabric bookmarks, mistakes and all. It was genuinely chaotic - crooked stitches, tangled thread, the occasional pricked finger - but that mess is exactly what made every technique she later explained actually land. I've come to think lectures teach children what a skill looks like, while hands-on mess teaches them what it feels like, and it's the second one that survives past the test.

States the difference plainly and closes with a short, simple sentence, using common phrasing throughout.Nêu khác biệt một cách đơn giản và kết bằng một câu ngắn gọn, đơn giản, với cách diễn đạt thông dụng xuyên suốt.

I think one of the biggest differences is the structure you get. When you learn from a teacher, the process is more organized and you're usually guided step by step. For example, when I tried learning calligraphy on my own a couple of years ago, just watching YouTube and copying Instagram posts, I found it easy to get stuck or miss important basics. But back in university, I took a design class with Ms. Lan, who broke each skill down in a logical order. She would spot mistakes I didn't notice and explain why something wasn't working, which helped me improve much faster. That kind of feedback is much harder to get by yourself.

Frames the whole answer around the metaphor of being 'student and inspector at once' and closes with 'you can't outsource the noticing'.Xây dựng toàn bộ câu trả lời quanh phép ẩn dụ 'student and inspector at once' (vừa là học sinh vừa là người kiểm tra), kết bằng 'you can't outsource the noticing'.

I think the real difference is who's responsible for noticing what's going wrong. Learning alone, you're both student and inspector at once, and inspecting your own blind spots is, almost by definition, difficult. When I tried teaching myself calligraphy a couple of years ago, watching YouTube tutorials and copying whatever looked good on Instagram, I kept hitting invisible walls, plateaus I couldn't diagnose because I had no outside eye to explain what was actually wrong. Ms. Lan's university design class was the opposite experience entirely: she'd catch mistakes I hadn't even registered as mistakes and explain the underlying reason my technique wasn't working. I suspect that's the real limit of self-teaching - you can access infinite information online, but you can't outsource the noticing.

It wasn't just about watching videos - I made sure to practice by recreating what I saw, then applying the techniques to my own sketches. I think adult learning is really a negotiation between limited time and stubborn pride - you want to improve, but rarely have the hours or the willingness to sit in a beginner's seat the way a child would. When I decided to get better at digital illustration a couple of years back, I cobbled together my own curriculum out of YouTube tutorials and an evening course, squeezed in after work in Da Nang, and the actual learning happened less in the watching than in the awkward, error-ridden process of redrawing what I'd just seen until it stopped looking wrong. It felt clumsy for longer than I expected, but eventually something clicked. I suspect most adults learn this way now, less through formal instruction and more through this patchwork of borrowed expertise, applied stubbornly until it sticks.

I think self-discipline matters because motivation is unreliable in exactly the moments you need it most - it shows up at the start, in a burst of enthusiasm, and then quietly vanishes right around week two, which is when the actual work begins. That's more or less what happened when I decided to teach myself guitar in high school in Hue: the excitement lasted about a fortnight before my fingers were sore, my chords sounded wrong, and every evening offered a reasonable excuse to quit and play games instead. What got me through wasn't some renewed burst of passion, it was a fairly boring commitment to twenty minutes a night regardless of how I felt. Months later, playing full songs start to finish, it was obvious that discipline, not talent, had been doing the actual work.

• GRAOf course, it can be harder to stay motivated without face-to-face support, but honestly, the variety of resources online makes it easier to find a teaching style that clicks.Adds 'of course' and 'honestly' for slightly more natural concessive flow, a step up from 6.5's plainer version.Thêm 'of course' và 'honestly' để mạch nhượng bộ tự nhiên hơn một chút, tiến thêm một bước so với phiên bản đơn giản hơn của bài 6.5.
    Band 7.5

Reframes the benefit as 'not just convenience, it's choice' and closes with the abstract noun 'trade-off'.Diễn đạt lại lợi ích thành 'not just convenience, it's choice' (không chỉ là sự tiện lợi, mà là sự lựa chọn), kết bằng danh từ trừu tượng 'trade-off' (sự đánh đổi).

I think the real benefit of learning online isn't just convenience, it's choice - the sheer range of people teaching the same skill differently means you can eventually find the one explanation that actually clicks for your brain. Last year, wanting to get better at animating icons for mobile apps, I signed up for a short Motion Design course on Skillshare, and what struck me wasn't the content itself so much as the flexibility around it - lessons squeezed into lunch breaks at the studio, or watched half-asleep at midnight. The discussion boards turned out to be an unexpected bonus too, feedback from designers scattered across time zones I'll probably never meet in person. Motivation is admittedly harder to sustain without someone physically checking on you, but that trade-off feels worth it for the sheer range of teaching styles now available.
