Đề bài (cue card)

Describe a person you know who enjoys taking a lot of photos.

You should say:

  • Who this person is
  • What this person takes photos of
  • Whether you think the photos are good
  • And explain why you think this person enjoys taking a lot of photos.

Band 6.5

The answer gives one plain, direct reason for the person's hobby ('it helps him relax after staring at a computer screen') and closes with a simple summary statement, a clear but modest structure typical of Band 6.5.Câu trả lời đưa ra một lý do đơn giản, trực tiếp cho sở thích của người này ('nó giúp anh ấy thư giãn sau khi nhìn màn hình máy tính cả ngày') và kết bằng một câu tóm tắt đơn giản, cấu trúc rõ ràng nhưng khiêm tốn, đặc trưng của Band 6.5.

A person in my life who really likes taking photos is my colleague Khanh, who works at the same studio as me in Da Nang.

He takes photos almost everywhere, but especially around the city in the early evening, when the light is soft. He often goes up to the rooftop of our office building after work, because you can see the whole river and Dragon Bridge from up there. On weekends, he sometimes rides out to Son Tra Peninsula just to take photos of the sea and the mountains.

I think he likes taking photos because it helps him relax after staring at a computer screen all day for design work, which is the same job as mine. He also says it makes him notice small details in the city that he would normally walk past, like reflections in puddles or the shadow of a building. He posts a lot of his photos on Instagram, and honestly, they look much better than mine.

I feel quite happy having him around, because he is always suggesting new places to go and see. Sometimes he invites me along, and even though I am not very interested in photography myself, I enjoy the walk and the chance to see the city from a different angle. His photos have also made me appreciate Da Nang more than before.

  • FCI think he likes taking photos because it helps him relax after staring at a computer screen all day for design work, which is the same job as mine. The reason for Khanh's hobby is explained with a single because-clause, directly and clearly, without layering in a second cause or a reflective comment on top of it — a plain, functional way of developing the answer with one clear reason. That single-clause development is exactly what the 6.5 tier expects: "one clear reason or example is enough," rather than the additional linked reasons or evaluative asides a 7.0 or 7.5 answer would build in at the same point. The added detail "which is the same job as mine" is a simple relative clause, but it's used descriptively rather than to develop the idea further.Lý do cho sở thích của Khanh được giải thích bằng một mệnh đề “because” duy nhất, trực tiếp và rõ ràng, không lồng thêm một nguyên nhân thứ hai hay một lời bình luận mang tính suy ngẫm nào lên trên đó — một cách phát triển ý đơn giản, có chức năng với đúng một lý do rõ ràng. Kiểu phát triển bằng một mệnh đề duy nhất đó chính xác là điều bậc 6.5 yêu cầu: “one clear reason or example is enough”, khác với những lý do liên kết bổ sung hay lời bình mang tính đánh giá mà một bài Band 7.0 hay 7.5 sẽ lồng vào ở cùng vị trí đó. Chi tiết thêm vào “which is the same job as mine” là một mệnh đề quan hệ đơn giản, nhưng nó được dùng mang tính mô tả hơn là để phát triển ý sâu hơn.
  • LRHis photos have also made me appreciate Da Nang more than before. The vocabulary here stays entirely plain and high-frequency — "appreciate," "more than before" — where a higher band might reach for something more specific like "seeing the city through his eyes" or "given me a new appreciation for." This deliberate plainness, stating the effect directly without any figurative or unusual phrasing, is exactly the 6.5 lexical profile: "use everyday, high-frequency words... plain and clear is the target." The sentence is accurate and does close the answer with a genuine personal effect, but it doesn't reach for the more flexible collocations a 7.0 answer would layer in.Từ vựng ở đây hoàn toàn giữ ở mức đơn giản, tần suất cao — “appreciate”, “more than before” — trong khi một bài ở band cao hơn có thể chọn cách diễn đạt cụ thể hơn như “seeing the city through his eyes” hoặc “given me a new appreciation for”.
  • GRAI feel quite happy having him around, because he is always suggesting new places to go and see.The sentence uses a gerund phrase with one because-clause rather than more varied subordination, showing the mostly simple-to-basic-complex grammar typical of Band 6.5.Câu này dùng một cụm động danh từ với một mệnh đề 'because' thay vì mệnh đề phụ đa dạng hơn, cho thấy ngữ pháp chủ yếu từ đơn giản đến phức hợp cơ bản, đặc trưng của Band 6.5.
Band 7.0

The answer develops its point with one vivid concrete example — around two hundred photos taken before lunch on a family trip — and closes with a reflective point about small moments being worth keeping, giving fuller development than the 6.5 answer while staying more direct than the 7.5 version.Câu trả lời phát triển ý bằng một ví dụ cụ thể, sống động — khoảng hai trăm bức ảnh được chụp trước bữa trưa trong một chuyến đi gia đình — và kết bằng một ý suy ngẫm rằng những khoảnh khắc nhỏ đáng được giữ lại, mang lại sự phát triển đầy đủ hơn bài Band 6.5, dù vẫn trực tiếp hơn bài Band 7.5.

My younger sister Vy is completely obsessed with photography — she's at university in Ho Chi Minh City these days, but even back when she lived with us in Hue, she never went anywhere without a camera, or at least her phone out, photographing literally anything — food, the street outside, even a shadow falling across a wall.

She'll photograph almost anywhere, but she really switches into gear during family trips or a visit to somewhere new. Last Tet, when the whole family went to Hội An for the day, she'd already taken something like two hundred photos before we even sat down for lunch. She has this eye for spotting details the rest of us walk straight past — the pattern in a roof tile, an odd shape in the clouds. Even at home, she'll set up a little scene around whatever dessert our grandmother's just made. She loves posting the results on Instagram and Zalo, and I'm sure part of the motivation is the reaction she gets, but I also think she just genuinely likes holding onto moments — she's told me it's less about how something looked and more about how it felt.

I do admire her for it, even though I'll never share her enthusiasm for cameras myself. She can be a bit exhausting when she insists everyone pose before anyone's allowed to touch their food, but I get that it's just her way of marking the moment as worth remembering. Because of her, our family actually has a real visual record of things I'd probably have completely forgotten by now, and it's made me appreciate how much those small, ordinary moments are worth holding onto.

  • FCshe'd already taken something like two hundred photos before we even sat down for lunchThe specific concrete example develops the general claim about her habit rather than just stating it, showing the fuller development expected at Band 7.0.Ví dụ cụ thể, rõ ràng này phát triển nhận định chung về thói quen của em gái thay vì chỉ nêu ra suông, cho thấy sự phát triển đầy đủ hơn được kỳ vọng ở Band 7.0.
  • LRshe just genuinely likes holding onto moments"Holding onto moments" is a natural, mildly figurative collocation for the abstract idea of preserving memories, slightly more flexible than a plain word like "remembering" but well short of an unusual or idiomatic expression. That's exactly the 7.0 lexical profile — common words used with a touch more imagination than the most basic vocabulary — and it contrasts with the more literal explanation that follows ("less about how something looked and more about how it felt").
  • GRABecause of her, our family actually has a real visual record of things I'd probably have completely forgotten by nowThe sentence opens with a fronted prepositional phrase ("Because of her") before the main clause, a natural but noticeably varied way to open compared to the simpler subject-first pattern ("Our family has a visual record because of her") a 6.5 answer would use. This kind of comfortable structural variation — moving a cause to the front for emphasis — matches the 7.0 tier's grammar target of a "comfortable mix of simple and complex sentences, generally accurate." The embedded clause "I'd probably have completely forgotten" also adds a second layer of complexity while staying fully accurate.Câu này mở đầu bằng một cụm giới từ được đảo lên trước (“Because of her”) trước mệnh đề chính, một cách mở đầu tự nhiên nhưng rõ ràng biến hóa hơn so với cấu trúc chủ ngữ đứng trước đơn giản hơn (“Our family has a visual record because of her”) mà một bài Band 6.5 sẽ dùng. Kiểu biến hóa cấu trúc thoải mái này — đưa nguyên nhân lên đầu câu để nhấn mạnh — khớp với mục tiêu ngữ pháp của bậc 7.0 là “comfortable mix of simple and complex sentences, generally accurate”. Mệnh đề lồng “I’d probably have completely forgotten” cũng thêm một lớp phức tạp thứ hai trong khi vẫn hoàn toàn chính xác.
Band 7.5

The answer closes with a reflective generalisation about the value of 'those little slices of everyday life' rather than a plain summary of the sister's hobby, the evaluative development typical of Band 7.5.Câu trả lời kết thúc bằng một khái quát mang tính suy ngẫm về giá trị của 'những lát cắt nhỏ bé của đời sống thường nhật' thay vì một câu tóm tắt đơn thuần về sở thích của em gái, sự phát triển mang tính đánh giá đặc trưng của Band 7.5.

One person in my life who is absolutely obsessed with taking photos is my younger sister, Vy. She's studying at university in Ho Chi Minh City now, but honestly, even when she was living with us in Hue, I remember her always carrying some sort of camera or at least using her phone to take pictures of everything-food, street views, even random details like shadows on the walls.

Vy takes photos pretty much everywhere she goes, but I'd say she gets especially active during family trips or when we visit new cafés. For example, last Tet holiday when we all went to Hoi An for a day, she must've taken over two hundred photos before lunchtime. She has a knack for spotting little things most people would miss, like a pattern in the tiles or an unusual cloud shape. Even at home, she sometimes sets up these little photoshoots for whatever dessert our grandmother makes. She's always excited to share her pictures on Instagram or Zalo, and I think that's part of what motivates her. But it's also because she genuinely enjoys capturing moments-she says it helps her remember how things felt, not just how they looked.

I actually admire her for this, even though I'm not nearly as enthusiastic about photos myself. Her energy can be a bit much sometimes, especially when she insists on taking group pictures before anyone eats, but I get that it's her way of appreciating the moment. Plus, thanks to her, our family has a great visual record of all sorts of memories I probably would've forgotten. It's made me realize how valuable it can be to look back and see those little slices of everyday life.

  • LRShe has a knack for spotting little things most people would miss"Has a knack for" is a genuinely idiomatic collocation describing natural talent, chosen instead of a more literal phrase like "is good at noticing" — precisely the "less literal way of describing a skill" that marks 7.5 Lexical Resource. A 7.0 answer would be more likely to use a safer, more common phrase such as "she's really good at noticing small details." The idiom also fits naturally into spoken register here, following straight after a concrete example (the two hundred photos before lunch), so it reads as genuine praise rather than a memorised phrase.“Has a knack for” là một sự kết hợp từ mang tính thành ngữ thực sự, mô tả năng khiếu tự nhiên, được chọn thay vì một cụm từ mang nghĩa đen hơn như “is good at noticing” — chính xác là “cách diễn đạt một kỹ năng ít mang nghĩa đen hơn” đánh dấu Lexical Resource ở bậc 7.5.
  • FCIt's made me realize how valuable it can be to look back and see those little slices of everyday life. The answer closes on a generalised reflection about the value of everyday memories rather than a plain fact about Vy's hobby, converting the whole anecdote into a small personal insight. This evaluative closing move — stepping back from the specific story to a broader takeaway — is exactly the reflective development the 7.5 tier rewards; a 7.0 answer would more likely end with a simpler statement such as "I think it's a good hobby for her to have." "Little slices of everyday life" is also a mildly figurative phrase for photographs, adding a touch of lexical sophistication to the closing thought.Câu trả lời kết thúc bằng một suy ngẫm mang tính khái quát về giá trị của những ký ức đời thường, thay vì một sự kiện trần trụi về sở thích của Vy, biến toàn bộ câu chuyện thành một nhận thức cá nhân nhỏ bé. Động thái kết bài mang tính đánh giá này — lùi lại từ câu chuyện cụ thể để đi tới một bài học rộng hơn — chính xác là sự phát triển mang tính suy ngẫm mà bậc 7.5 đánh giá cao; một bài Band 7.0 nhiều khả năng sẽ kết thúc bằng một câu đơn giản hơn như “I think it's a good hobby for her to have”. “Little slices of everyday life” cũng là một cách diễn đạt mang chút hình tượng cho những bức ảnh, thêm một chút tinh tế về từ vựng cho ý kết bài.
  • GRAshe says it helps her remember how things felt, not just how they lookedThe parallel contrast between "felt" and "looked," both governed by the same reported clause structure, shows controlled, flexible grammar — building a balanced opposition inside a single reported-speech sentence rather than two separate statements. This kind of parallel construction under reported speech is part of the "varied complex structures... mostly error-free" the 7.5 tier expects; a 7.0 answer would more likely simplify this to "she says she likes remembering how things felt." The contrast itself also deepens the characterisation of Vy's motivation, distinguishing emotional memory from mere documentation.Sự tương phản song song giữa “felt” và “looked”, cả hai đều chịu chung một cấu trúc mệnh đề tường thuật, cho thấy ngữ pháp có kiểm soát, linh hoạt — xây dựng một thế đối lập cân bằng trong cùng một câu tường thuật gián tiếp thay vì hai phát biểu tách biệt. Kiểu cấu trúc song song dưới hình thức lời nói gián tiếp này là một phần của “varied complex structures... mostly error-free” mà bậc 7.5 kỳ vọng; một bài Band 7.0 nhiều khả năng sẽ đơn giản hóa điều này thành “she says she likes remembering how things felt”. Bản thân sự tương phản cũng đào sâu thêm việc khắc họa động cơ của Vy, phân biệt ký ức cảm xúc với việc chỉ đơn thuần ghi lại tư liệu.

    Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer lists categories one after another using the plain connector 'also' and simple present-tense verbs like 'takes' and 'get photographed', ending in a short, general summary sentence.Câu trả lời band 6.5 liệt kê từng danh mục một, dùng liên từ đơn giản 'also' và các động từ ở thì hiện tại đơn giản như 'takes' và 'get photographed', kết thúc bằng một câu tóm tắt ngắn, chung chung.

Food is probably the most common thing here. Almost everyone I know takes a photo of their meal before eating it, whether it's a fancy dinner or just bánh xèo from a street stall. People also take photos of their pets, their children, and small daily moments, like a nice sunset or a coffee cup. Travel and famous places get photographed a lot too. Work photos are common too - I often photograph whiteboard sketches in meetings so I don't lose an idea before drawing it in Figma. So it's really a mix of small and big moments.

    • GRAAlmost everyone I know takes a photo of their meal before eating it, whether it's a fancy dinner or just bánh xèo from a street stall.A single sentence with one 'whether...or' clause, a simple way of giving two examples. A band 7.5 answer would likely compress the examples into a shorter appositive phrase instead of a full 'whether' clause.Một câu duy nhất với một mệnh đề 'whether...or', một cách đơn giản để đưa ra hai ví dụ.
    • LRsmall daily momentsA general, plain description. A higher band answer would likely choose a more specific or vivid phrase to describe the same idea, rather than this all-purpose label.Một mô tả chung chung, đơn giản.
    • FCSo it's really a mix of small and big moments.A short, generic closing sentence that restates the point without adding anything new. A band 7 answer would more likely close with a slightly more reflective remark instead of a flat summary.Một câu kết ngắn, chung chung, nhắc lại ý mà không thêm điều gì mới.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer opens with the natural marker 'honestly' and links the balcony sunset example with the qualifying phrase 'small but personal', showing a bit more reflection than the plain listing of band 6.5.Câu trả lời band 7.0 mở đầu bằng từ đánh dấu tự nhiên 'honestly' và liên kết ví dụ hoàng hôn ban công bằng cụm từ giới hạn 'small but personal', thể hiện suy ngẫm hơn một chút so với cách liệt kê đơn giản ở band 6.5.

Food is probably the most common one here, honestly - almost everyone I know photographs their meal before eating it, whether it's a fancy dinner or just bánh xèo from a street stall. People also photograph their pets, their children, and everyday moments that feel small but personal, like a nice sunset from their balcony or a coffee cup with good light. Travel and landmarks obviously get photographed a lot too. Work-related photos are common as well, at least in my field - I often snap quick photos of whiteboard sketches during brainstorms so I don't lose an idea before it's properly drawn out in Figma. So it ranges from the mundane to the memorable, really.

• FCFood is probably the most common one here, honestlyThe discourse marker 'honestly' is added directly after the claim rather than left out, giving a more conversational, considered tone than the bare statement a band 6.5 answer would use.Từ đánh dấu diễn ngôn 'honestly' được thêm trực tiếp sau nhận định thay vì bỏ qua, mang lại giọng điệu mang tính hội thoại, cân nhắc hơn so với câu khẳng định trần trụi mà câu trả lời band 6.5 sẽ dùng.
    • LReveryday moments that feel small but personalA more precise, nuanced phrase than the plain 'small daily moments' used at band 6.5, though it's not yet the more distinctive vocabulary a 7.5 answer would reach for.Một cụm từ chính xác, tinh tế hơn 'small daily moments' đơn giản được dùng ở band 6.5, dù chưa đạt đến từ vựng đặc trưng hơn mà câu trả lời band 7.5 sẽ chọn.
    • GRAat least in my field - I often snap quick photos of whiteboard sketches during brainstorms so I don't lose an idea before it's properly drawn out in FigmaAn inserted qualifying phrase ('at least in my field') plus a 'so' clause explaining purpose, combined in one longer sentence rather than the shorter, separate sentences a band 6.5 answer would use for the same content.Một cụm từ giới hạn được chèn vào ('at least in my field') cộng với một mệnh đề 'so' giải thích mục đích, kết hợp trong một câu dài hơn thay vì các câu ngắn hơn, riêng biệt mà câu trả lời band 6.5 sẽ dùng cho cùng nội dung.
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer opens with the compact, idiomatic 'Food wins easily' and closes on the parallel phrase 'from the utterly mundane to the genuinely memorable', showing more vivid, deliberate word choice than the plainer band 7.0 ending.Câu trả lời band 7.5 mở đầu bằng cụm từ súc tích, tự nhiên 'Food wins easily' và kết thúc bằng cụm từ song song 'from the utterly mundane to the genuinely memorable', thể hiện lựa chọn từ sống động, có chủ đích hơn kết thúc đơn giản hơn ở band 7.0.

Food wins easily, I'd say - almost everyone I know photographs their meal before eating it, be it a fancy dinner or just bánh xèo from a street stall. Pets, children and small personal moments get their share too, a balcony sunset or a coffee cup catching good light, the kind of thing that means nothing to anyone else. Travel and landmarks are an obvious category. Work throws up its own version of this habit - I regularly snap whiteboard sketches mid-brainstorm so an idea survives long enough to be properly drawn out in Figma. So it spans everything from the utterly mundane to the genuinely memorable.

    • LRFood wins easilyA vivid, idiomatic opener replacing the plainer 'Food is probably the most common one' phrasing at band 7.0, an example of the less-common, punchier word choice expected at 7.5.Một cách mở đầu sống động, mang tính thành ngữ, thay thế cho cách diễn đạt đơn giản hơn 'Food is probably the most common one' ở band 7.0, một ví dụ về lựa chọn từ ít thông dụng, mạnh mẽ hơn mà band 7.5 kỳ vọng.

I think it's mostly about staying connected. Sharing small moments lets friends and family feel involved in your life even when you're far away, which matters to me because my parents and grandmother are still in Hue while I live in Da Nang. It's also a way to remember things, since posting a photo makes an ordinary moment feel worth noticing. For some people, there's also a wish for likes or comments, which isn't always healthy. But for most people, I think it's just a simple way to stay close to each other from far away.

It's also a way of processing and remembering things; posting a photo almost turns an ordinary moment into something worth noticing. For some people, there's a social validation element too, waiting for likes or comments, which can become a bit unhealthy if it goes too far. Overall, though, I think for most people it's simpler than that - just a low-effort way to stay present in each other's lives from a distance.

    Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer states a direct 'yes, definitely' opinion, gives one clear example, and closes by restating the main idea using the plain connector 'but'.Câu trả lời band 6.5 nêu quan điểm 'vâng, chắc chắn rồi' trực tiếp, đưa ra một ví dụ rõ ràng, và khép lại bằng cách nhắc lại ý chính, dùng liên từ đơn giản 'but'.

Yes, definitely, although what counts as 'interesting' is different for everyone. I have a coworker, Khánh, who takes a photo of almost every meal he eats, even ordinary lunches from the same three restaurants. I used to think it was strange, until I realised it's just a personal habit for him, not something to impress people. Some boring-looking photos actually mean something to the person who took them - a plain photo of an empty apartment might mark moving day. So many photos really are boring, but 'uninteresting' often depends on information the viewer lacks.

    • GRAI used to think it was strange, until I realised it's just a personal habit for him, not something to impress people.A main clause followed by an 'until' clause, a fairly simple way to show a change of opinion. A 7.5 answer would likely compress this shift into a single tighter clause instead of two full sentences joined by 'until'.Một mệnh đề chính theo sau bởi một mệnh đề 'until', một cách khá đơn giản để thể hiện sự thay đổi quan điểm.
    • LRnot something to impress peopleA plain, functional phrase. A higher band answer would likely use a more specific word, such as describing it as documentation rather than an attempt 'to impress people'.Một cụm từ đơn giản, mang tính chức năng.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer replaces the plain 'strange' with the more precise 'a bit excessive', and links the coworker example to the wider point with the phrase 'personal habit of documentation', showing more elaborated reasoning than band 6.5.Câu trả lời band 7.0 thay 'strange' đơn giản bằng 'a bit excessive' chính xác hơn, và liên kết ví dụ về đồng nghiệp với ý rộng hơn bằng cụm từ 'personal habit of documentation', thể hiện lập luận chi tiết hơn band 6.5.

I have a coworker, Khánh, who photographs almost every meal he eats, even fairly ordinary lunches from the same three restaurants near our office, and I used to find it a bit excessive until I realised it's really just a personal habit of documentation for him, not something meant to impress anyone. Some photos that look boring to an outsider can carry real meaning for the person taking them - a plain photo of an empty apartment might mark the day someone moved in, for instance. So while plenty of photos genuinely are mundane, 'uninteresting' often depends on context the viewer doesn't have.

A coworker of mine, Khánh, photographs almost every meal he eats, even fairly ordinary lunches from the same three restaurants near our office, something I found faintly excessive until I realised it's simply his own quiet form of documentation, not an attempt to impress anyone. Plenty of photos that read as dull to an outsider carry real weight for whoever took them - a plain shot of an empty apartment might mark the exact day someone moved in. Not everywhere, no. Some places don't allow photography for good reasons - inside some temples or museums, flash photography can damage old objects, and in religious places, taking photos of people praying can feel disrespectful. Privacy is also important, because taking photos of strangers, especially children, without asking can be a real problem even in public places. That said, in most normal tourist places, like a street market or a famous bridge, I don't think rules are necessary. So I think the general rule should be freedom to take photos, with clear exceptions where there's a real risk of harm.

Not entirely, no. Some places restrict photography for good reasons - inside certain temples or museums, flash photography can damage artefacts, and in some religious or sacred spaces, photographing people at prayer feels disrespectful regardless of legality. Privacy matters too; photographing strangers, especially children, without permission raises real concerns even in public spaces. That said, in most everyday tourist settings, like a street market or a famous bridge, I don't think restrictions are necessary or practical. I'd say the general rule should be reasonable freedom with clear, specific exceptions, rather than either a blanket ban or completely unrestricted photography everywhere.

Not entirely, no. Certain places restrict photography for good reason - inside some temples or museums, flash can damage artefacts, and in sacred spaces, photographing people mid-prayer feels disrespectful whatever the legal position. Privacy matters just as much; photographing strangers, children especially, without permission raises real concerns even out in public. That said, across most everyday tourist settings - a street market, a famous bridge - restrictions strike me as unnecessary and impractical. It's really a matter of proportion, not blanket rules. The general rule, I'd say, should be reasonable freedom hedged by clear, specific exceptions, rather than swinging between a blanket ban and a free-for-all.

Yes, I think that happens to some people. I've seen visitors at Dragon Bridge spend the whole fire show looking at their phone screen trying to get a perfect video, instead of watching the show right in front of them, which seems like a strange choice. There does seem to be more awareness of this now, though, since some tourists put their phones away on purpose to be present. To some extent, yes, particularly around graphic or violent content, and images of identifiable victims, children especially, who never consented to being shown. News organisations carry a duty to inform without tipping into needless exploitation, and some outlets clearly cross that line chasing attention. That said, I wouldn't want rules so tight they choke off legitimate, important images - photographs of real suffering in war or disaster have, historically, shifted public opinion and policy precisely because they were shown rather than hidden away. So the rules should lean more towards dignity and consent than towards simply sanitising anything hard to look at.

Yes, definitely - there are famous examples of this, where one powerful image changed opinion more than pages of written articles ever could. I think photos work this way because they skip a lot of complicated explanation and affect people emotionally right away. I've seen a small version of this - a before-and-after clean-up photo near My Khe Beach did more to convince friends to cut plastic use than any article we'd all read and forgotten. Of course, a photo alone doesn't usually create lasting change without more action afterwards, but it can definitely be the spark that starts it.

I think the honest answer is that people photograph the moments they suspect they'll want proof of later - the ones that feel too good, or too rare, to simply trust to memory. When I hiked up the Marble Mountains with my colleagues last November, phones came out the second we hit the summit, because the sight of Da Nang unspooling below us, city lights just flickering on, felt like exactly that kind of moment. Yet I can't remember the last time I saw someone photographing their commute or a grocery run - nobody's rushing to immortalise the mundane. There seems to be an unspoken filter at work: beauty or significance gets the camera, routine simply gets lived through.

I think for some people, a camera doesn't capture a moment so much as interrupt it, which is reason enough to avoid one. My old university roommate in Hanoi, Minh, was a perfect example - he'd duck behind someone or pull an exaggerated face rather than sit for a serious shot, and he once admitted he'd rather trust the memory to his own head than to a photo that always felt slightly staged once he looked back on it. To be fair, I've come to see his point. There's also a quieter reason some people opt out entirely: a growing wariness about how easily a photo can end up circulating online without their say. So it's less that they dislike photography, more that they're guarding something private.

I don't think appropriateness lives in the location at all - it lives in whether a camera adds to a moment or quietly steals something from it. At a spot like My Khe Beach or Han Market, a camera adds nothing but fun, especially surrounded by friends. But last month, at a hushed memorial ceremony for a colleague's relative in Hue, someone started snapping photos mid-speech, and the click of a phone camera against that silence felt almost violent - certainly disrespectful to a family that was grieving in real time. So while I love what photos preserve, I'd argue the real skill is reading a room before you ever raise the phone, not deciding in advance that some places are simply off-limits.
