Band 6.5

The description of guests and the grandmother's stories uses plain listing and a simple relative clause, accurate and clear but without much stylistic variety, typical of Band 6.5.Phần miêu tả khách mời và những câu chuyện của bà sử dụng cách liệt kê đơn giản cùng một mệnh đề quan hệ cơ bản, chính xác và rõ ràng nhưng không có nhiều biến hóa về văn phong, đặc trưng của Band 6.5.

A party I remember was held after my younger sister, Phuong, graduated from university in Ho Chi Minh City. This was around June this year. She came back to Hue for a few days, and our family decided to celebrate at my uncle's restaurant there.

Quite a lot of people attended - my parents, my grandmother, my uncle's family, and a few close relatives and neighbours. It was a small but warm gathering, maybe about fifteen people in total. My uncle cooked several traditional dishes himself, like bun bo Hue and banh beo, and there was also a big cake for Phuong.

During the party, people mostly sat together, ate, and talked about Phuong's plans for the future. My grandmother kept telling old stories about when Phuong was a child, which made everyone laugh. Later in the evening, we took a lot of family photos together, since it is rare for all of us to be in the same place at the same time.

I felt really happy and proud that evening. Seeing my sister achieve something so important, and having the whole family together to celebrate it, made me appreciate my family more. It was a simple party, but it felt very special to me.

  • LRQuite a lot of people attended - my parents, my grandmother, my uncle's family, and a few close relatives and neighbours. The guest list uses entirely plain, high-frequency kinship nouns ("parents," "grandmother," "uncle's family," "neighbours") with no attempt at more specific or varied phrasing -- a higher band might individualize a guest or use a phrase like "the whole extended family." This flat, functional listing is exactly the "everyday, high-frequency words... at most one slightly less-common word" the Band 6.5 lexical target specifies, prioritizing clarity over elaboration.
  • GRAMy grandmother kept telling old stories about when Phuong was a child, which made everyone laugh. The "which" clause tacks a simple result ("made everyone laugh") onto the main statement with no further elaboration on why the stories were funny or what they contained. This is accurate but structurally basic, in line with Band 6.5's "mostly simple sentences plus a few basic complex ones" ceiling, where a single relative clause is about as ambitious as the grammar needs to get.Mệnh đề "which" gắn thêm một kết quả đơn giản ("made everyone laugh") vào câu chính mà không giải thích thêm vì sao những câu chuyện lại hài hước hoặc chúng nói về điều gì.
  • FCI felt really happy and proud that evening. Two plain, common emotion adjectives ("happy," "proud") intensified only by "really," stated in a short standalone sentence with no attached example or reflection -- this direct, unembellished emotional statement matches Band 6.5's instruction to "answer directly... one clear reason or example is enough," and indeed the actual reason (seeing the sister succeed) follows only in the next sentence rather than being folded into this one.
Band 7.0

The past perfect in 'someone had brought a small cake... which made her laugh out loud' and the flexible collocation 'nearly given up' show accurate, natural complex language without the more literary flourishes of Band 7.5.Thì quá khứ hoàn thành trong câu 'có ai đó đã mang theo một chiếc bánh kem nhỏ... khiến cô ấy bật cười thành tiếng' cùng cụm từ linh hoạt 'nearly given up' (suýt bỏ cuộc) cho thấy ngôn ngữ phức tạp chính xác, tự nhiên nhưng chưa có những nét trau chuốt mang tính văn chương của Band 7.5.

One party I remember well was held after my close friend Mai finally passed the exam to become a licensed architect, which she'd been trying to pass for almost two years. This was back in March, and a group of us decided to celebrate at a small rooftop bar near the Han River the same evening she got the results.

There were around ten of us altogether, mostly friends from university plus a couple of her colleagues from the architecture firm she works at. Everyone showed up not long after work, still half in their office clothes, and we pushed a few tables together so the whole group could sit around one spot. We ordered a mix of grilled snacks and a few bottles of beer, and someone had brought a small cake with 'Congratulations, Architect Mai' written on it, which made her laugh out loud when she saw it.

Most of the evening was just people telling stories about how many times Mai had complained about that exam over the past two years, and she took it pretty well, laughing along with everyone else. A couple of her colleagues gave a short, slightly cheesy toast, and by around ten o'clock somebody put on music and a few people started dancing between the tables, even though there wasn't really enough space for it.

I felt genuinely happy for her that night, especially knowing how much effort she'd put in and how many times she'd nearly given up. Seeing her finally relax and enjoy the moment, instead of stressing about revision, made the whole evening feel worth celebrating.

  • GRAwhich she'd been trying to pass for almost two yearsThe relative clause uses the past perfect continuous ("she'd been trying to pass") to mark an action that continued right up to the point of the main clause ("finally passed") -- accurate handling of a genuinely tricky tense combination that a 6.5 speaker would likely sidestep ("she tried for two years and then passed"). This fits the "comfortable mix... generally accurate" Band 7.0 grammar target without the wider structural range (cleft sentences, conditionals) that would push it toward 7.5.Mệnh đề quan hệ sử dụng thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn ("she'd been trying to pass") để đánh dấu một hành động kéo dài liên tục cho tới đúng thời điểm của mệnh đề chính ("finally passed") — cách xử lý chính xác một sự kết hợp thì thực sự khó mà một người nói Band 6.5 nhiều khả năng sẽ né tránh ("she tried for two years and then passed").
  • GRAsomeone had brought a small cake with 'Congratulations, Architect Mai' written on it, which made her laugh out loudThree structures are layered into one sentence: past perfect ("had brought"), a reduced participial clause ("written on it"), and a non-defining relative clause ("which made her laugh out loud") -- adding detail without losing clarity, the comfortable-but-not-showy range the Band 7.0 grammar target rewards. A 6.5 version would likely break this into two or three short sentences; the quoted text on the cake also keeps the story vivid and specific rather than generic.
  • LRespecially knowing how much effort she'd put in and how many times she'd nearly given upTwo phrasal collocations, "put in" (effort) and "nearly given up," replace plainer equivalents like "worked hard" and "almost stopped trying" with more natural, idiomatic-adjacent phrasing -- the "few flexible... topic-specific" vocabulary the Band 7.0 lexical target calls for, common enough that it doesn't reach for the more deliberately figurative language reserved for 7.5. It also ties the party's emotional payoff directly back to the two years of exam struggle described earlier in the story.
Band 7.5

The embedded aside about the manager ('who's usually pretty reserved') and the precise collocation 'hard-won achievements' both mark the more sophisticated grammatical and lexical range of Band 7.5.Lời chú thích lồng vào về người quản lý ('người vốn khá kín tiếng') cùng cách kết hợp từ chính xác 'hard-won achievements' (thành quả gian nan mới có được) đều đánh dấu phạm vi ngữ pháp và từ vựng tinh tế hơn của Band 7.5.

One party that stands out for me was the celebration my team organized after we finally released our first major app for an overseas client. This was about nine months ago, back in September. The launch was a pretty big milestone because we'd spent almost half a year working late nights and weekends to get all the features finished and deal with last-minute bugs.

The party was held on the rooftop terrace of our office building, overlooking the Han River and the city lights. Everyone from our small studio was there-about fourteen of us, including our manager, Minh, and our client from Singapore who happened to be visiting Da Nang at the time. Some people even brought their partners or friends, so the group was bigger and livelier than usual.

We ordered a ton of food-mostly local dishes like bánh xèo, mì Quảng, and of course, plenty of cà phê sữa đá. There was music playing, mostly upbeat pop and a few 90s throwbacks, and someone had even set up a karaoke machine, which got a bit wild after a couple of beers. People took turns singing, and even our manager-who's usually pretty reserved-got up and sang a surprisingly decent version of a Trinh Cong Son song. We spent most of the night just chatting, eating, and laughing about all the stressful moments we'd survived together.

Honestly, I felt a real sense of relief and pride that night. It was such a contrast to all the pressure of the weeks before. Seeing everyone relaxed and genuinely happy, including our client, made me realise how important it is to take time to celebrate those hard-won achievements. It definitely made me more connected to my team.

  • GRAour manager-who's usually pretty reserved-got up and sang a surprisingly decent version of a Trinh Cong Son songThe dashes create a parenthetical relative clause ("our manager—who's usually pretty reserved—") inserted mid-sentence between subject and verb, a genuinely advanced structure because the speaker has to hold the main clause "got up and sang..." in suspension while adding the aside. A 7.0 speaker would more likely place this detail in a separate sentence ("Our manager is usually pretty reserved, but he got up and sang..."), which is safer but loses the single-breath fluency this interruption shows. The aside also does real narrative work, since it's what makes the karaoke moment feel surprising rather than just a list of who sang.Các dấu gạch ngang tạo ra một mệnh đề quan hệ chêm xen ("our manager—who's usually pretty reserved—") được chèn vào giữa câu, giữa chủ ngữ và động từ, một cấu trúc thực sự nâng cao vì người nói phải giữ mệnh đề chính "got up and sang..."
  • LRIt was such a contrast to all the pressure of the weeks before."Contrast" is chosen over a more obvious word like "different" or "change," and it's the more accurate noun because it captures an opposition between two states — pressure and relief — rather than a simple change over time. A 7.0 answer would likely settle for "it was really different from the weeks before," which is correct but flatter, while a 6.5 answer would almost certainly use "different."
  • LRmade me realise how important it is to take time to celebrate those hard-won achievements"Hard-won" is a compound modifier that isn't high-frequency vocabulary but also isn't obscure — it's precisely the kind of natural collocation a fluent speaker reaches for without sounding like they're showing off, which is what the 7.5 descriptor calls for. A plainer band would say "achievements we worked hard for," which is grammatically fine but loses the economy of the compound adjective.

    Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer gives a direct opinion with one simple supporting reason, using the plain connector 'so' to close, and modest, repeated vocabulary like 'special' and 'nice'.Câu trả lời band 6.5 đưa ra một quan điểm trực tiếp với một lý do hỗ trợ đơn giản, dùng từ nối bằng phẳng 'so' để kết, và từ vựng khiêm tốn, lặp lại như 'special' và 'nice'.

Yes, I think food is quite important at a party. It gives people something to do, especially at the start when nobody is talking much yet. Without food, a party can feel a bit boring, even if the people are nice. For example, when we had a birthday party for a colleague at the office, we just bought some bánh mì and drinks, but it still made the party feel special. So food isn't the main thing, but it really helps.

    • FCSo food isn't the main thing, but it really helps.A short, plain closing sentence using 'but' as the only linking device. A band 7 answer would likely soften this with a discourse marker like 'honestly' or 'I'd say', and a 7.5 answer would round it off with a more reflective, evaluative remark rather than a flat statement.Một câu kết ngắn gọn, bằng phẳng, chỉ dùng 'but' làm công cụ liên kết duy nhất.
    • LRa bit boringA very common, general adjective doing the descriptive work. A higher band would reach for something more specific or idiomatic, such as 'flat' or 'lacking energy', rather than the all-purpose 'boring'.Một tính từ rất thông dụng, chung chung đảm nhận công việc miêu tả.
    • GRAFor example, when we had a birthday party for a colleague at the office, we just bought some bánh mì and drinks, but it still made the party feel special.A single coordinated sentence joined with 'but', with no subordination or embedded clauses. A 7.5 answer would likely compress this into a participial or fronted structure instead of a plain subject-verb chain.Một câu phối hợp duy nhất nối bằng 'but', không có sự phụ thuộc hay mệnh đề lồng bên trong.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer opens with the natural spoken marker 'Honestly' and builds a conditional clause ('if there's nothing to eat...'), showing more reflection than a flat opinion while still staying fairly direct.Câu trả lời band 7.0 mở đầu bằng dấu hiệu nói tự nhiên 'Honestly' và xây dựng một mệnh đề điều kiện ('if there's nothing to eat...'), thể hiện nhiều suy ngẫm hơn một quan điểm bằng phẳng trong khi vẫn khá trực tiếp.

Honestly, yes — food matters more than people usually admit. It gives everyone something to do and talk about before the conversation really gets going, and if there's nothing to eat, the whole party can feel a little flat, no matter how good the company is. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, though: for a colleague's birthday at the office, we just ordered bánh mì and some drinks, and that alone was enough to make it feel festive rather than an ordinary after-work gathering. So while friendship is obviously the real point, food plays a bigger supporting role than we tend to notice.

    • FCHonestly, yesA natural spoken opener that signals a considered, slightly self-aware stance rather than a bare 'yes'. A 6.5 answer would simply state the opinion; a 7.5 answer would likely embed a similar attitude marker mid-sentence instead of using it as a standalone opener.Một phần mở đầu nói tự nhiên báo hiệu một lập trường được cân nhắc, hơi tự nhận thức thay vì một từ 'yes' trần trụi.
    • GRAand if there's nothing to eat, the whole party can feel a little flat, no matter how good the company isA conditional clause combined with a concessive 'no matter how' clause in the same sentence, showing more grammatical range than the simple coordinated sentences typical of band 6.5. A 7.5 answer would likely compress this further into a non-finite construction.Một mệnh đề điều kiện kết hợp với một mệnh đề nhượng bộ 'no matter how' trong cùng một câu, thể hiện phạm vi ngữ pháp rộng hơn những câu song song đơn giản điển hình của band 6.5.
    • LRordinary after-work gatheringA moderately precise collocation, more specific than a plain word like 'party' or 'boring'. It's not yet the more idiomatic, less-common phrasing a 7.5 answer would reach for, but it shows deliberate word choice beyond the most basic vocabulary.Một cụm từ chính xác vừa phải, cụ thể hơn một từ bằng phẳng như 'party' hay 'boring'.
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer opens with a fronted imperative-like clause, 'Strip a party of food entirely...', and closes with the evaluative aside 'I'd argue', both signs of more flexible, idiomatic control than the plainer band 7.0 phrasing.Câu trả lời band 7.5 mở đầu bằng một mệnh đề đặt trước, mang tính mệnh lệnh, 'Strip a party of food entirely...', và kết bằng lời chêm đánh giá 'I'd argue', cả hai đều là dấu hiệu của khả năng kiểm soát linh hoạt, mang tính thành ngữ hơn cách diễn đạt phẳng hơn của band 7.0.

Pretty important, I'd say — food gives people something to do with their hands and their attention before conversation has properly warmed up. Strip a party of food entirely and it can feel oddly flat, no matter how good the company is. It needn't be elaborate, either: gathered around nothing more than bánh mì and a few drinks for a colleague's office birthday, we still turned an ordinary after-work hangout into something that felt genuinely festive. There's also something about food that physically pulls people together around a table, which conversation alone rarely manages. So while friendship is really the whole point of the evening, food, I'd argue, does more of the quiet, supporting work than most of us give it credit for.

    • GRAStrip a party of food entirely and it can feel oddly flatA fronted imperative-style clause used hypothetically instead of the more ordinary 'if there's nothing to eat' conditional a band 7.0 answer would use. The 6.5 answer states a direct 'it depends' position with a simple reason and one plain example, using the basic connector 'because' twice and a repeated closing structure ('home is better... public place is better').Câu trả lời band 6.5 nêu một lập trường 'it depends' trực tiếp với một lý do đơn giản và một ví dụ bằng phẳng, dùng từ nối cơ bản 'because' hai lần và một cấu trúc kết lặp lại ('home is better... public place is better').

I think it depends on how many people are coming. A home is more relaxed because you can play your own music and stay as late as you like. But homes are usually small, so when my team wanted to celebrate finishing a project, we went to a rooftop bar near the river instead, because about twelve people would not fit in anyone's apartment. Also, nobody has to clean up afterwards in a public place, which is nice. So for a small group, home is better, but for a bigger party, a public place is better.

    • GRAA home is more relaxed because you can play your own music and stay as late as you like.A simple main clause plus one 'because' clause, the most basic way to give a reason. A band 7 answer would likely link two ideas together with a comma and 'which', showing more range.Một mệnh đề chính đơn giản cộng với một mệnh đề 'because', cách cơ bản nhất để đưa ra lý do.
    • LRwhich is niceA very general, low-information closing phrase. A higher band answer would replace this with a more specific evaluative word, such as 'underrated' or 'convenient'.Một cụm kết rất chung chung, ít thông tin.
    • FCSo for a small group, home is better, but for a bigger party, a public place is better. The closing sentence repeats the same 'is better' structure twice rather than varying the phrasing, which is typical of band 6.5's more mechanical cohesion. A 7.5 answer would likely vary the second half instead of repeating the exact frame.Câu kết lặp lại cùng cấu trúc 'is better' hai lần thay vì thay đổi cách diễn đạt, điển hình cho sự liên kết máy móc hơn của band 6.5.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer uses the natural connector 'Honestly' and a 'which is exactly why...since' clause to link the space problem to the actual example, showing more joined-up reasoning than a simple 'so' list.Câu trả lời band 7.0 dùng từ nối tự nhiên 'Honestly' và một mệnh đề 'which is exactly why...since' để nối vấn đề không gian với ví dụ thực tế, thể hiện lý lẽ liên kết hơn một danh sách 'so' đơn giản.

Honestly, it depends on the size and the mood you want. A home feels more relaxed and personal — you can control the music and stay as late as you like, without feeling like you have to be 'on' the way you sometimes do in public. But homes have their limits, which is exactly why our team's project-launch celebration ended up at a rooftop bar by the river rather than someone's flat, since a dozen of us plus partners just would not have fit. Public places also mean nobody has to clean up afterwards, which is genuinely underrated. So I'd say home works for a small, close group, and a public spot for anything bigger.

    • GRAwhich is exactly why our team's project-launch celebration ended up at a rooftop bar by the river rather than someone's flat, since a dozen of us plus partners just would not have fitA layered sentence combining a 'which' clause with a further 'since' clause, connecting cause and example in one structure.
    • LRgenuinely underratedA moderately natural collocation showing more precise evaluation than the plain 'which is nice' a lower band would use, though it stops short of the more vivid, idiomatic phrasing a 7.5 answer typically reaches for.Một cụm từ tự nhiên vừa phải cho thấy sự đánh giá chính xác hơn cụm 'which is nice' bằng phẳng mà band thấp hơn sẽ dùng, dù chưa đạt đến cách diễn đạt sống động, mang tính thành ngữ hơn mà câu trả lời band 7.5 thường tìm đến.
    • FCwithout feeling like you have to be 'on' the way you sometimes do in publicA natural, slightly reflective aside that adds nuance to the opinion rather than just stating it. A 6.5 answer would likely omit this kind of qualifying detail altogether.Một lời chêm tự nhiên, hơi mang tính suy ngẫm thêm sắc thái cho quan điểm thay vì chỉ nêu ra.
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer opens with the fronted, compact 'Space, though, is the obvious catch' and uses a vivid image, 'nobody's left scrubbing plates at midnight', in place of the more generic phrasing lower bands rely on.Câu trả lời band 7.5 mở đầu bằng cụm đặt trước, gọn gàng 'Space, though, is the obvious catch' và dùng một hình ảnh sống động, 'nobody's left scrubbing plates at midnight', thay cho cách diễn đạt chung chung hơn mà các band thấp hơn dựa vào.

It really comes down to scale and mood, I'd say. A home wins on intimacy — you control the music, linger as late as you like, free from the low-grade pressure to be 'on' that public spaces bring. Space, though, is the obvious catch, which is precisely why our team's project-launch bash ended up on a rooftop bar overlooking the river rather than crammed into someone's flat, a dozen of us plus partners never going to fit comfortably at my place. Public venues carry an underrated perk too: nobody's left scrubbing plates at midnight. So for a small, close-knit gathering, home has the edge; for anything larger, a public spot is simply the more sensible call.

    • GRAa dozen of us plus partners never going to fit comfortably at my placeA compressed participial-style clause with no finite verb, tacked onto the sentence instead of a full 'since we would not have fit' clause. This flexible, economical grammar is characteristic of the higher band.Một mệnh đề dạng phân từ cô đọng, không có động từ chia, được gắn thêm vào câu thay vì một mệnh đề đầy đủ 'since we would not have fit'.
    • LRnobody's left scrubbing plates at midnightA vivid, specific image replacing the plainer 'nobody has to clean up' phrasing used at lower bands, showing the kind of precise, slightly idiomatic word choice that marks band 7.5.Một hình ảnh sống động, cụ thể thay thế cho cách diễn đạt 'nobody has to clean up' bằng phẳng hơn được dùng ở các band thấp hơn, thể hiện kiểu lựa chọn từ ngữ chính xác, hơi mang tính thành ngữ đánh dấu band 7.5.
    • FCSpace, though, is the obvious catchA short, fronted evaluative clause that pivots the argument compactly. A band 7.0 answer would more likely use a fuller 'But homes have their limits' sentence instead of this terser, more idiomatic pivot.Một mệnh đề đánh giá ngắn, đặt trước xoay chuyển lập luận một cách gọn gàng. Câu trả lời band 7.0 nhiều khả năng sẽ dùng một câu đầy đủ hơn 'But homes have their limits' thay vì bước ngoặt ngắn gọn, mang tính thành ngữ hơn này.

I don't think one is really better, just different. Parties with friends are more relaxed because you don't worry about saying the wrong thing in front of an older relative. But family parties have their own warmth, like when my grandmother tells the same stories every Tet in Hue, and it never gets boring. Friends' parties are probably more lively, but family parties feel more meaningful over time. So I don't think enjoyment is the right way to compare them.

    • FCI don't think one is really better, just different.A short, direct opening statement of position with no hedging language.
    • GRAFriends' parties are probably more lively, but family parties feel more meaningful over time. Two short independent clauses joined only by 'but', with no subordination. A higher band would likely link these ideas with a more varied structure, such as a comma-separated contrast within one flowing sentence. A band 7.5 answer would likely reach for a more precise or idiomatic alternative, such as 'never wears thin', to describe the same idea.Một cụm từ đơn giản, rất thông dụng.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer inserts the spoken aside 'honestly' mid-sentence rather than as a simple opener, and links ideas with 'since' and 'though', giving more natural flow than the shorter, choppier band 6.5 sentences.Câu trả lời band 7.0 chèn lời nói chêm 'honestly' vào giữa câu thay vì dùng như một lời mở đầu đơn giản, và nối các ý bằng 'since' và 'though', mang lại dòng chảy tự nhiên hơn những câu ngắn hơn, rời rạc hơn của band 6.5.

I wouldn't say one is definitively better, honestly, just different in feel. Parties with friends tend to be a bit more relaxed and unpredictable, since there's less worry about saying the wrong thing in front of an older relative. Family parties, though, carry a different kind of warmth — the sort you get from hearing my grandmother tell the same stories every Tet in Hue, which somehow never gets old. Friends' parties are probably livelier on average, but family gatherings feel more meaningful over time, even if quieter. So I'd say it isn't really about which is more enjoyable, more that they meet different needs.

    • FCI wouldn't say one is definitively better, honestly, just different in feel. The discourse marker 'honestly' is placed inside the sentence rather than tacked on the front, giving a more natural, conversational rhythm. A band 6.5 answer would more likely place a similar marker plainly at the start, if it used one at all.Dấu hiệu diễn ngôn 'honestly' được đặt bên trong câu thay vì gắn ở đầu, mang lại nhịp điệu tự nhiên, đàm thoại hơn.
    • GRAParties with friends tend to be a bit more relaxed and unpredictable, since there's less worry about saying the wrong thing in front of an older relative.A main clause extended with a 'since' clause explaining the reason within the same sentence, rather than the separate short sentences a band 6.5 answer would use for the same content.Một mệnh đề chính được mở rộng bằng một mệnh đề 'since' giải thích lý do trong cùng một câu, thay vì những câu ngắn, riêng biệt mà câu trả lời band 6.5 sẽ dùng cho cùng nội dung đó.

I wouldn't call one definitively better — they're simply different registers of enjoyment. Gatherings with friends tend to be looser and more unpredictable, free of that faint worry about saying the wrong thing in front of an older relative. Family occasions carry a different kind of warmth instead, the sort you get watching my grandmother retell the same stories every Tet in Hue, which somehow never wears thin. Friends' parties probably edge it on sheer liveliness, but family gatherings, quieter as they are, tend to deepen in meaning the longer you sit with them. So enjoyment, I'd argue, is really the wrong yardstick — they're satisfying two different needs rather than competing for the same one.

    • LRnice clothesA very general adjective-noun pairing. A higher band would likely name the specific garment earlier or use a more precise word than 'nice' to describe the clothing.Một cặp tính từ-danh từ rất chung chung.

Fairly important, I'd say, though it depends on the event. For something formal, like a wedding, clothing signals respect for the occasion and the hosts, so most people make a genuine effort. For a casual party, it matters less, though people still dress a bit better than usual, almost as a way of marking the day as different from an ordinary one. I remember wearing an áo dài to a close friend's wedding in Hue, and it genuinely changed how I felt during the ceremony, more part of the occasion than if I'd just worn regular clothes. So while clothes aren't the core of a celebration, they do help set the mood.

Câu trả lời band 6.5 có khả năng sẽ chỉ nêu 'people still dress a little better' mà không có lý lẽ bổ sung này.
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer opens the anecdote with the participial phrase 'Slipping into an áo dài...' instead of 'I remember wearing', and closes with the compact, idiomatic 'quietly help set the right mood', marking noticeably more flexible grammar and precise word choice.Câu trả lời band 7.5 mở đầu câu chuyện bằng cụm phân từ 'Slipping into an áo dài...' thay vì 'I remember wearing', và kết bằng cụm ngắn gọn, mang tính thành ngữ 'quietly help set the right mood', đánh dấu ngữ pháp linh hoạt hơn rõ rệt và sự lựa chọn từ ngữ chính xác.

Fairly important, I'd say, though how much depends heavily on the occasion. At something formal, like a wedding, what you wear signals respect for the day and the hosts, so most people make a real effort rather than a token one. At a casual gathering among friends, it matters less, though people still tend to dress a notch above the everyday, almost marking the day out as special rather than ordinary. Slipping into an áo dài for a close friend's wedding back in Hue genuinely shifted how I felt during the ceremony — far more woven into the occasion than regular clothes would have left me. So while clothing isn't the heart of a celebration, it does quietly help set the right mood.

I think moderation is a good idea, but I wouldn't say people should just save instead of celebrating. Some events deserve extra spending, like a wedding, because they only happen once and the memory lasts a long time. But I do think many people spend too much because of social pressure, trying to match what other people did, which isn't a good reason. A friend of mine kept her thirtieth birthday small and simple, just dinner with six people, and she said it felt more meaningful than a big expensive party. So spending wisely is better than just spending less.

The 7.0 answer uses the natural connector 'That said' and the mild collocation 'genuinely deserve', plus a comparative conditional ('than a big party would have'), showing more reflective linking than the shorter band 6.5 sentences.Câu trả lời band 7.0 dùng từ nối tự nhiên 'That said' và cụm từ nhẹ nhàng 'genuinely deserve', cộng với một điều kiện so sánh ('than a big party would have'), thể hiện sự liên kết mang tính suy ngẫm hơn những câu ngắn hơn của band 6.5.

I think moderation makes sense, but I wouldn't go as far as saving instead of celebrating altogether. Some events genuinely deserve a bit of extra spending, since they only happen once, like a wedding or a big birthday, and the memory tends to outlast the cost. That said, I'd say a lot of people overspend out of social pressure rather than genuine desire, trying to match what others did, which seems like the wrong reason to spend. A close friend of mine kept her thirtieth birthday small, just dinner with six people, and told me afterwards it felt more meaningful than a big party would have. So thoughtful spending, not necessarily less spending, seems like the better goal.

Moderation strikes me as the right instinct, though I wouldn't go as far as saving instead of celebrating altogether. Certain events genuinely earn the extra spend — a wedding, a milestone birthday — precisely because they happen once, and the memory tends to outlive the cost by decades. What I'd push back on is spending driven by social pressure rather than genuine desire, people quietly trying to match whatever the last person did, which strikes me as exactly the wrong reason to open your wallet. A close friend kept her thirtieth deliberately small, just dinner with six people, and told me afterwards it felt far more meaningful than an expensive blowout would have. So thoughtful spending, rather than simply less spending, seems like the better target to aim for.

Mostly to build a sense of shared identity and pride, I think. Yes, I think so, generally. National holidays should give everyone the chance to take part in celebrations without worrying about losing money, and if workers aren't paid, it punishes them for something that isn't their fault. At my studio, holiday pay is normal, and I think most companies here do the same, partly because the law requires it and partly because it's just fair. Maybe for very short-term or informal jobs it's different. But for most normal jobs, I think paying workers on holidays is just basic respect.

    • GRAand if workers aren't paid, it punishes them for something that isn't their faultA conditional clause using simple, everyday vocabulary throughout. While grammatically correct, it stays close to basic subject-verb structures rather than the more layered conditionals a 7.5 answer would use.Một mệnh đề điều kiện dùng từ vựng đơn giản, đời thường xuyên suốt. Dù đúng ngữ pháp, nó vẫn bám sát cấu trúc chủ-vị cơ bản thay vì những mệnh đề điều kiện nhiều lớp hơn mà câu trả lời band 7.5 sẽ dùng.

A higher band answer would likely replace this with a more specific idea, such as calling it 'a basic form of respect', which the 6.5 answer only reaches at the very end.Một cụm đánh giá rất chung chung, bằng phẳng.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer expands the reasoning with the phrase 'regardless of income' and the more precise 'the norms are a bit murkier' for the exception, giving a fuller, more qualified argument than the terser band 6.5 version.Câu trả lời band 7.0 mở rộng lý lẽ bằng cụm 'regardless of income' và cụm chính xác hơn 'the norms are a bit murkier' cho ngoại lệ, đưa ra một lập luận đầy đủ hơn, có giới hạn hơn phiên bản ngắn gọn hơn của band 6.5.

Yes, I think so, generally. National holidays are meant to give everyone, regardless of income, the chance to take part in shared celebrations without worrying about lost wages, and unpaid closures would effectively punish workers for something outside their control. At our studio, holiday pay is standard, and most companies here follow that norm, partly because labour law requires it and partly because it's seen as fair. The exception might be short-term or informal work, where the norms are a bit murkier. But for most standard employment, paying workers through national holidays is a basic form of respect for their right to take part in cultural life like everyone else.

    Band 7.5

Yes, generally — national holidays exist to let everyone, regardless of income, take part in shared celebrations without fretting over lost wages, and an unpaid closure effectively penalises workers for something entirely outside their control. Holiday pay is simply standard at our studio, a norm most companies here seem to follow, partly because labour law demands it and partly because it's treated as basic fairness. Where the norms get murkier is short-term or informal work, arrangements that sit outside the usual rules. But for standard employment, paying people through national holidays strikes me as a baseline form of respect for their right to participate in cultural life like everyone else.

    Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer opens with a simple 'help a little, but not much alone' position and uses the plain connector 'but' three times, closing with the short, direct 'it's not useless, but it shouldn't be the only thing'.Câu trả lời band 6.5 mở đầu bằng một lập trường đơn giản 'help a little, but not much alone' và dùng từ nối bằng phẳng 'but' ba lần, kết bằng cụm ngắn gọn, trực tiếp 'it's not useless, but it shouldn't be the only thing'.

It could help a little, but I don't think one day alone would do much. It might raise awareness and make schools or workplaces do activities about other cultures, which is nice, but real understanding needs more than just one day a year. I think it works better as a small reminder for things that happen more often. At my studio, we sometimes have 'culture lunches' where someone shares food or a story from their background, and these small, regular moments probably help more than one big global day. So it's not useless, but it shouldn't be the only thing.

It could help a little, though I don't think a single day would achieve much on its own. Something like that might raise awareness and encourage schools or workplaces to run activities about other cultures for a day, which is a nice gesture, but genuine understanding usually needs sustained exposure, not an annual reminder. I think it works better as a symbolic anchor for things that happen more regularly — our studio has 'culture lunches' where someone shares food or a story from their background, and those small, repeated moments probably do more for real understanding than one big global date would. Still, a shared symbolic day isn't nothing; it shouldn't be treated as sufficient on its own.

I think the appeal of parties comes down to permission - permission to switch off and actually be present with people, rather than just coexisting with them. Take last December: once our studio finally wrapped a gruelling app project, my boss whisked the whole team off to a rooftop barbecue overlooking the Han River, and there was something almost cathartic about trading our desks for skewers and city lights. What really stuck with me was a spontaneous round of charades with Trang and Minh that dissolved into fits of laughter neither of us saw coming.

Honestly, I'd say most people my age lean towards parties with friends rather than family, at least for events that aren't strictly family occasions. Last August, for example, my colleagues and I headed to a rooftop bar near the Han River to celebrate wrapping up a tough redesign project, and everyone seemed noticeably more open once we didn't have to worry about behaving formally the way we might around parents or uncles. That said, I do know people who genuinely prefer family gatherings, especially when relatives are close in age or share similar interests. Personally, though, I find I can unwind more fully when it's just friends around.

I think there's a pretty clear generational tilt here: most people my age gravitate towards parties with friends, if only because friendship comes with fewer unspoken rules to observe. Last August, my colleagues and I marked the end of a punishing redesign project with drinks at a rooftop bar near the Han River, and what struck me was how much people loosened up simply because there was no parent or uncle in the room to perform politeness for. That's not to dismiss family gatherings entirely - I know plenty of people, especially those with relatives close in age, who find them just as freeing. But for me, at least, friends are where the guard genuinely comes down.

It really comes down to the trade-off between convenience and intimacy, and in my circle, convenience usually wins. A few months back, my team marked a colleague's promotion at a rooftop bar overlooking the Han River, and what I appreciated most was how effortless it all was - no cooking, no cleaning, and people free to drift in or slip away whenever they liked. That kind of flexibility is hard to replicate at home. That said, I know families in particular who still swear by hosting at home, where nobody's watching the clock and the gathering feels genuinely theirs. So it's less a national preference than a question of what each group is actually optimising for.

I think food is actually very important at a party. It's not just about eating - it sets the mood and gives people something to talk about. For example, a few months ago my team had a farewell party for our project manager, Linh, at a rooftop restaurant by the Han River. The food, like bánh xèo and mì Quảng, and even homemade bánh bèo from Linh's family, really brought everyone together. People started sharing stories about childhood meals. So good food helps people relax and connect, though the company matters too.

Family parties and friend parties operate on almost opposite logic, I've found - one runs on ritual, the other on release. My grandmother's birthday dinner in Hue this past March, held at my uncle's restaurant, was steeped in tradition: a long shared meal, old stories retold for the hundredth time, a few rounds of cards. Band 6.5

Gives a direct yes/no opinion and describes clothing plainly, using simple contrast with 'but'.Đưa ra một quan điểm yes/no trực tiếp và miêu tả trang phục một cách bằng phẳng, dùng sự đối lập đơn giản với 'but'.

Yes, I think people usually dress differently depending on the type of party. There's a big difference between a casual housewarming and a formal company party. For example, last spring I went to a farewell dinner for my colleague Nam at a restaurant near the Dragon Bridge, and most of us dressed a bit more nicely - the men wore button-down shirts and the women wore dresses. It felt right because we wanted to show respect. But when friends meet at someone's apartment for a birthday, people usually just wear jeans and a t-shirt.

    • FCYes, I think people usually dress differently depending on the type of party.A direct yes/opinion opener without further framing, unlike 7.5's abstract framing of clothing as a 'signal'.Một phần mở đầu yes/quan điểm trực tiếp mà không có sự tạo khung thêm, khác với cách xây dựng trừu tượng của band 7.5 khi coi trang phục như một 'signal'.
    • LRthe men wore button-down shirts and the women wore dressesA plain factual listing, less textured than 7.5's 'quietly upgraded their outfits'.Một danh sách sự việc bằng phẳng, kém chất liệu hơn cụm 'quietly upgraded their outfits' của band 7.5.
    • GRABut when friends meet at someone's apartment for a birthday, people usually just wear jeans and a t-shirt.A simple 'but' contrast sentence, functional but basic compared to the layered final sentence at 7.5.Một câu đối lập 'but' đơn giản, có chức năng nhưng cơ bản, so với câu kết nhiều lớp của band 7.5.
    Band 7.0

Elaborates slightly with a dash clause and the cohesive marker 'By contrast', staying close to literal description.

Honestly, I do think people usually dress differently depending on the type of party - there's a clear gap between something casual like a housewarming and something formal like a company year-end event. Last spring, for example, I went to a farewell dinner for my colleague Nam at a riverside restaurant near the Dragon Bridge, and most of us made a bit more effort, the guys in button-down shirts, the women in dresses, mainly because we wanted the evening to feel respectful for Nam. By contrast, at a friend's birthday in someone's apartment, people usually just show up in jeans and a t-shirt. So I'd say it's partly about mood, partly about comfort.

    • FCthere's a clear gap between something casual like a housewarming and something formal like a company year-end eventThe added dash clause elaborates the claim a little further than 6.5's bare statement, though it's still fairly literal next to 7.5's 'signal' metaphor.Mệnh đề dấu gạch ngang được thêm vào diễn giải luận điểm xa hơn một chút so với phát biểu trần trụi của band 6.5, dù vẫn khá theo nghĩa đen so với phép ẩn dụ 'signal' của band 7.5.

    • GRABy contrast, at a friend's birthday in someone's apartment, people usually just show up in jeans and a t-shirt.Uses the cohesive marker 'By contrast' for a cleaner link than 6.5's simple 'But', though the sentence itself stays a straightforward statement rather than the layered comparison at 7.5.Dùng dấu hiệu liên kết 'By contrast' để liên kết gọn gàng hơn từ 'But' đơn giản của band 6.5, dù bản thân câu vẫn là một phát biểu trực tiếp chứ không phải sự so sánh nhiều lớp của band 7.5.
    Band 7.5

Frames clothing as a 'signal' from the start and closes with a 'less a rule than an instinct' construction and the idiom 'misread the room'.Xây dựng trang phục thành một 'signal' ngay từ đầu và kết bằng cấu trúc 'less a rule than an instinct' cùng thành ngữ 'misread the room'.

Clothing at a party is basically a signal of how much the occasion is meant to matter, so yes, people dress accordingly, often without even thinking about it. Last spring, at a farewell dinner for my colleague Nam near the Dragon Bridge, the whole team quietly upgraded their outfits - button-down shirts, the odd dress - not because anyone demanded it, but because we wanted the evening to feel like it mattered to him. Compare that to a friend's birthday in someone's cramped apartment, where jeans and a t-shirt are practically the uniform and dressing up would almost seem like you'd misread the room. So I'd say it's less a rule than an instinct: we dress to match the emotional weight we want the occasion to carry.
