  • And explain how you feel about knowing this person who you think is so happy.

Band 6.5

Simple contrastive linking with 'but' and plain reasoning in 'because she is satisfied with the simple things in her life' keep the language clear and accurate but unadventurous, typical of Band 6.5.Cách nối tương phản đơn giản bằng 'but' và lý lẽ đơn giản trong 'because she is satisfied with the simple things in her life' (vì chị ấy hài lòng với những điều giản dị trong cuộc sống) giữ cho ngôn ngữ rõ ràng, chính xác nhưng không có gì mạo hiểm, điển hình của Band 6.5.

The happy person I want to talk about is my grandmother, who lives in Hue with my parents. She is almost eighty years old now.

My grandmother is small and quite thin, but she is always busy. She grows vegetables and flowers in the small garden behind the house, and she takes care of them every single morning. She isn't very rich, and her health isn't perfect either, but she never really complains about anything.

She shows her happiness mostly by singing. She sings old songs while she is cooking or watering her plants, and she smiles at almost everyone she meets, even strangers. Whenever I visit, she always cooks my favourite dishes and tells funny stories about when my mother was young, laughing loudly at her own jokes.

I think she is a happy person because she is satisfied with the simple things in her life. She doesn't need anything expensive to feel good, just her garden, her family, and her cooking. Every time I go back to Hue and see her, her happiness makes me feel calmer too, and I always leave feeling better than when I arrived. Honestly, I hope I can be as content as she is when I get older.

  • LRshe is always busy"Always busy" is about the most generic way possible to describe someone's active lifestyle, avoiding any more specific or vivid alternative ("constantly on the go," "never idle") that a higher-band speaker might reach for in the same spot. It functions as a simple thesis statement that the following sentences about gardening and singing then illustrate, so the plainness here is compensated for by concrete detail later in the paragraph.
  • FCI think she is a happy person because she is satisfied with the simple things in her life. This sentence directly answers the implicit "why do you think she's happy" question with one because-clause, front-loading the opinion ("I think she is a happy person") before the single supporting reason, a clear and efficient but linguistically modest way to structure an argument. There is no further layering — no example embedded in the same sentence, no concession — so the reasoning stays at the one-clause level the descriptor associates with Band 6.5. The phrase "satisfied with the simple things in her life" is common rather than reaching for a more precise term like "contentment," which would be more typical of a 7.0+ answer.Câu này trả lời trực tiếp câu hỏi ngầm "vì sao bạn nghĩ cô ấy hạnh phúc" bằng một mệnh đề because, đặt quan điểm lên trước ("I think she is a happy person") trước lý do hỗ trợ duy nhất, một cách xây dựng lập luận rõ ràng và hiệu quả nhưng khiêm tốn về mặt ngôn ngữ.
  • GRAShe isn't very rich, and her health isn't perfect either, but she never really complains about anything.Three short clauses are joined with "and" and "but" into one sentence, building a simple additive-then-contrastive structure rather than subordinating the first two ideas under a single concessive clause ("although she isn't rich and her health isn't perfect..."). The pattern is accurate and entirely clear, but it's the coordination-based sentence-building the descriptor flags as elementary for Band 6.5, since the two negative facts and the positive contrast are simply lined up rather than integrated. "Never really complains" is a common hedge-plus-verb combination, adding a small amount of nuance without needing more advanced vocabulary.
Band 7.0

The not-because-but-because contrast in the final sentence and the natural collocation 'turns it into a funny story' show a comfortable range of structure and phrasing that develops the answer with reasoning rather than just description, sitting clearly above 6.5.Cấu trúc tương phản 'not because... but because' trong câu cuối và cụm từ tự nhiên 'turns it into a funny story' (biến nó thành một câu chuyện hài hước) cho thấy phạm vi cấu trúc và cách diễn đạt thoải mái, phát triển câu trả lời bằng lý lẽ thay vì chỉ miêu tả, rõ ràng cao hơn mức 6.5.

The happy person I'd like to talk about is my older sister, Mai, who works as a primary school teacher here in Da Nang.

Mai is in her late twenties, quite tall, and always seems to have energy left over even after a long day at school. She's warm and easy-going, and she's the kind of person who remembers little details about people, like a friend's favourite drink or somebody's exam date, and asks about them without being asked to.

She shows her happiness mostly through how she talks to people, actually. She laughs a lot, sometimes at things that aren't even that funny, and she has this habit of humming songs while she's cooking dinner or marking homework at the kitchen table. Even when something goes wrong, like the time her motorbike broke down in the rain, she somehow turns it into a funny story rather than a complaint.

I think she's a genuinely happy person because she doesn't seem to compare her life to other people's very much. She earns a modest salary as a teacher, much less than some of her old university friends, but she never really talks about that. Instead, she focuses on small things, like a good lesson with her students or a nice meal with the family, and that seems to be enough for her.

Being around Mai definitely puts me in a better mood, honestly. Whenever I'm feeling stressed about work, I usually end up calling her, not because she gives amazing advice, but because her attitude towards life reminds me not to take everything so seriously.

  • LRturns it into a funny story rather than a complaintThe contrastive pairing 'a funny story rather than a complaint' works as a natural collocation that characterises Mai's attitude through contrast instead of a flat adjective like 'positive', which is the kind of flexible, topic-specific phrasing the 7.0 descriptor targets. A 6.5 answer would likely just say 'she doesn't complain', while a 7.5 script might push further into figurative language; here the comparison stays accurate and idiomatic without drawing attention to itself, fitting the motorbike-breakdown anecdote it describes.Cặp tương phản 'a funny story rather than a complaint' hoạt động như một cụm cố định tự nhiên, khắc họa thái độ của Mai thông qua sự tương phản thay vì một tính từ bằng phẳng như 'positive', đây chính là kiểu diễn đạt linh hoạt, mang tính chủ đề mà tiêu chí 7.0 hướng tới.
  • FCShe shows her happiness mostly through how she talks to people, actually. This topic sentence signals exactly what the following paragraph of detail will illustrate, and the spoken tag 'actually' softens it into natural speech rather than a scripted-sounding transition -- both features the 7.0 fluency descriptor rewards as natural linking. A 6.5 answer would more likely jump straight into examples without this organising sentence, while the discourse marker here keeps the paragraph about Mai's habits (humming while cooking, remembering small details) coherently signposted.Câu chủ đề này báo hiệu chính xác điều mà đoạn chi tiết tiếp theo sẽ minh họa, và từ đệm mang tính khẩu ngữ 'actually' làm mềm nó thành lời nói tự nhiên thay vì một sự chuyển ý nghe như học thuộc lòng — cả hai đặc điểm này đều được tiêu chí độ trôi chảy 7.0 đánh giá cao như sự liên kết tự nhiên.
  • GRAI usually end up calling her, not because she gives amazing advice, but because her attitude towards life reminds me not to take everything so seriously. The 'not because X, but because Y' frame is a genuinely complex structure, correctly balanced across two parallel because-clauses, which sits right at the comfortable-but-not-showy end of the 7.0 grammar range. A 6.5 script would most likely simplify this into two separate sentences, while the parallelism and precision here let the speaker explain a subtle distinction -- that comfort, not advice, is what she values in Mai -- without any grammatical strain.Khung 'not because X, but because Y' là một cấu trúc thực sự phức tạp, được cân bằng chính xác giữa hai mệnh đề because song song, nằm đúng ở đầu thoải mái-nhưng-không-phô-trương của phạm vi ngữ pháp 7.0.
Band 7.5

The concessive structure 'It's not that his life is particularly easy; actually... but he seems to genuinely enjoy...' balances contrasting ideas within one sentence, and the figurative 'his positive energy is almost contagious' shows the idiomatic reach typical of Band 7.5.Cấu trúc nhượng bộ 'It's not that his life is particularly easy; actually... but he seems to genuinely enjoy...'

One of the happiest people I know is my uncle, whose name is Nam. He runs a small family restaurant just outside of Hue, not far from where my parents and grandmother live. I see him every time I go back to visit, and honestly, his positive energy is almost contagious.

Uncle Nam is in his early forties, a bit round in the middle from years of taste-testing, and he's got this huge, booming laugh you can hear from across the street. He's outgoing, extremely friendly, and always remembers details about people's lives-even small things I forget, like what my friends do or what I mentioned eating last time. He's the type who greets every customer by name whenever possible and tells light-hearted stories, even when the restaurant gets super busy during lunch hours.

He shows his happiness mostly through small acts-like cracking jokes with his staff, singing along to songs playing on the radio while he works, or giving away free bowls of chè to kids who stop by after school. If something goes wrong in the kitchen, he just shrugs and finds a way to laugh about it. It's not that his life is particularly easy; actually, running a restaurant is stressful, but he seems to genuinely enjoy what he's doing and the people around him.

I think what makes Uncle Nam truly happy is his outlook-he finds pleasure in the simple routines, his food, and especially the community he's built. He's grateful for what he has, and that really comes across in how he treats people. Whenever I'm home, being around him just puts me in a good mood.

  • LRhis positive energy is almost contagious'Contagious' is used metaphorically here, borrowed from illness to describe an emotional effect, which is exactly the kind of natural figurative touch the 7.5 lexical descriptor calls for -- used once, and in service of meaning rather than as decoration. A 7.0 answer would likely settle for something safer like 'he's very positive', so the metaphor marks a genuine step up, while still reading as spoken rather than written language, appropriate for describing how Uncle Nam affects people around his restaurant."Contagious" ở đây được dùng theo nghĩa ẩn dụ, mượn từ lĩnh vực bệnh tật để mô tả một hiệu ứng cảm xúc, đây chính xác là kiểu chạm nhẹ vào ngôn ngữ hình tượng tự nhiên mà tiêu chí từ vựng Band 7.5 yêu cầu — chỉ dùng một lần, phục vụ cho ý nghĩa chứ không phải để trang trí.
  • FCIt's not that his life is particularly easy; actually, running a restaurant is stressful, but he seems to genuinely enjoy what he's doingThis sentence performs the single reflective, evaluative move the 7.5 fluency descriptor asks for: rather than just describing Uncle Nam as happy, it explicitly weighs the hardship of running a restaurant against his enjoyment of it, arriving at an interpretation rather than a fact. A 7.0 answer would more likely state the happiness and the difficulty as separate, unconnected observations; here the semicolon and 'but' actively construct the insight that his happiness is chosen despite stress, not the absence of it.Câu này thực hiện đúng một động tác phản tư, đánh giá duy nhất mà tiêu chí độ trôi chảy Band 7.5 yêu cầu: thay vì chỉ mô tả chú Nam là người hạnh phúc, nó cân nhắc rõ ràng giữa sự vất vả của việc kinh doanh nhà hàng với niềm vui mà ông có được từ đó, đi đến một cách diễn giải chứ không chỉ là một sự kiện.
  • GRAa bit round in the middle from years of taste-testingThe reduced phrase 'from years of taste-testing' compresses what could have been a full clause ('because he has tasted food for years') into an economical prepositional tag, giving a varied sentence structure without adding a whole new clause -- the kind of grammatical flexibility the 7.5 descriptor rewards. A 6.5 or 7.0 answer would likely spell this out as a separate 'because' sentence, whereas the compression here also lets the detail double as gentle humour about a restaurant owner's physique.Cụm rút gọn "from years of taste-testing" nén một thứ lẽ ra phải là cả một mệnh đề đầy đủ ("because he has tasted food for years") thành một cụm giới từ ngắn gọn, mang lại cấu trúc câu đa dạng mà không cần thêm hẳn một mệnh đề mới — đây chính là kiểu linh hoạt ngữ pháp mà tiêu chí Band 7.5 đánh giá cao.

    Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer gives a plain list of activities and one concrete family example, using simple connectors like 'because' and 'too' to move between points, ending with a direct comparison to 'formal lessons'.Câu trả lời band 6.5 đưa ra một danh sách hoạt động đơn giản và một ví dụ gia đình cụ thể, dùng các từ nối đơn giản như 'because' và 'too' để chuyển giữa các điểm, kết bằng một sự so sánh trực tiếp với 'formal lessons'.

Young children usually enjoy things that are hands-on and social, not sitting still at a desk — drawing, singing, playing outside at break time, that kind of thing. Group activities seem to be the most popular, because children that age like doing things together rather than alone. A friend of mine has a seven-year-old daughter who mostly talks about art class and playground games when she gets home, not maths or spelling. Storytelling and simple games with a bit of competition, like team quizzes, are popular too. Basically, anything that feels like play holds their attention much better than formal lessons.

    • FCBasically, anything that feels like play holds their attention much better than formal lessons.A plain closing summary introduced with the basic filler 'Basically'. A 7.0 or 7.5 answer would more likely fold this generalisation into the sentence describing the daughter, rather than tacking it on as a separate final line.Một câu tóm tắt kết luận đơn giản được giới thiệu bằng từ đệm cơ bản 'Basically'.
    • LRGroup activities seem to be the most popularA plain, generic phrase ('the most popular'). A higher band would likely use a more vivid noun such as group activities being 'the biggest draw', which conveys more pull or appeal than the flat 'popular'.Một cụm từ đơn giản, chung chung ('the most popular').
    • GRAA friend of mine has a seven-year-old daughter who mostly talks about art class and playground games when she gets home, not maths or spellingA relative clause tagged onto the main statement, clear but standard. A 7.5 answer would be more likely to compress this into an appositive phrase, such as 'A friend's seven-year-old daughter, for instance,' instead of the fuller 'A friend of mine has a...who' structure.Một mệnh đề quan hệ gắn vào câu chính, rõ ràng nhưng khá chuẩn mực. Một câu trả lời band 7.5 nhiều khả năng sẽ nén thành một cụm đồng vị, như 'A friend's seven-year-old daughter, for instance,' thay vì cấu trúc đầy đủ hơn 'A friend of mine has a...who'.
    Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer upgrades 'the most popular' to the more vivid 'the biggest draw' and softens the opening with 'honestly', while the final sentence adds the more developed contrast 'play rather than formal instruction'.Câu trả lời band 7.0 nâng cấp 'the most popular' thành cụm từ sinh động hơn 'the biggest draw' và làm mềm phần mở đầu bằng 'honestly', trong khi câu cuối thêm vào sự tương phản phát triển hơn 'play rather than formal instruction'.

Young children tend to enjoy anything hands-on and social rather than sitting still, honestly — drawing, singing, playing outside during break time, that sort of thing. Group activities seem to be the biggest draw, since children that age are naturally social and enjoy doing something together rather than alone. A friend of mine has a seven-year-old daughter who talks mostly about art class and playground games when she gets home, rarely about maths or spelling. Storytelling and simple games with some element of competition, like team quizzes, are also popular. Basically, anything that feels like play rather than formal instruction tends to hold their attention far better.

    Vì sao đạt band này

    • FCYoung children tend to enjoy anything hands-on and social rather than sitting still, honestlyThe spoken filler 'honestly' inserted into the opening statement gives it a more natural, conversational rhythm than the flatter, unhedged opening a 6.5 answer would use for the same claim.Từ đệm trong lời nói 'honestly' chèn vào phát biểu mở đầu mang lại nhịp điệu tự nhiên, giống lời nói hơn so với phần mở đầu phẳng hơn, không có cách nói giảm nhẹ mà câu trả lời band 6.5 sẽ dùng cho cùng khẳng định.
    • LRGroup activities seem to be the biggest drawThe noun phrase 'the biggest draw' is a more vivid, natural collocation than the plain 'the most popular' a 6.5 answer uses for the same idea, suggesting real pull rather than just frequency.Cụm danh từ 'the biggest draw' là một cách kết hợp từ sinh động, tự nhiên hơn so với 'the most popular' đơn giản mà câu trả lời band 6.5 dùng cho cùng ý, gợi ý sức hút thực sự chứ không chỉ là tần suất.
    • GRAanything that feels like play rather than formal instruction tends to hold their attention far betterA 'rather than' contrast is built directly into the closing generalisation, a more compact structure than the separate comparison ('holds their attention much better than formal lessons') the 6.5 answer tacks on at the end.Một sự tương phản 'rather than' được xây dựng trực tiếp vào câu khái quát kết luận, một cấu trúc gọn hơn so với sự so sánh tách biệt ('holds their attention much better than formal lessons') mà câu trả lời band 6.5 gắn thêm ở cuối.
    Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer uses the vivid verbs 'gravitate towards', 'tearing around' and 'relish', compressing the family example into an appositive phrase, and closes on the sharper comparison 'far longer than a worksheet ever could'.Câu trả lời band 7.5 dùng các động từ sinh động 'gravitate towards', 'tearing around' và 'relish', nén ví dụ gia đình thành một cụm đồng vị, và kết bằng sự so sánh sắc bén hơn 'far longer than a worksheet ever could'.

Young children gravitate towards anything hands-on and social rather than sitting still, honestly — drawing, singing, tearing around outside during break time, that sort of thing. Group activities seem to be the biggest draw, since children that age are naturally sociable and relish doing something together rather than alone. A friend's seven-year-old daughter, for instance, comes home talking almost exclusively about art class and playground games, rarely maths or spelling. Storytelling and simple games with a competitive edge, like team quizzes, go down well too. Recognising effort, not just results, makes a big difference, I think — children who feel they're always being compared to the top students tend to lose interest quickly. Teachers who mix lessons with games, group projects and some physical movement also keep the classroom feeling less like a chore. Building a bit of personal connection helps too, like remembering a child's favourite game or pet, which makes school feel less impersonal. Reducing exam pressure at a young age matters as well, since anxiety early on can put children off learning. So I think warmth and variety matter more than strict discipline.

Teachers who build in variety, mixing lessons with games, group projects and some physical movement, also keep classrooms feeling less like a chore. A little personal rapport goes a long way too; remembering something as small as a child's favourite game or pet is often enough to make school feel less impersonal. Not always, no, but it should be enjoyable most of the time. Some subjects need repetition and effort that isn't really fun, like memorising times tables, and I think it's good for children to learn to push through something a bit boring, because that builds patience for later. But if school feels joyless most of the time, children start connecting learning with stress, which can hurt their motivation in the long run. So I think the goal should be enjoyment most of the time, with a bit of tolerance for the less exciting, necessary parts.

Not the best way, no, though it obviously helps up to a point. Once someone earns enough to live comfortably, extra money seems to add less and less to how positive they feel about work. After that, things like recognition, purpose and getting along with colleagues seem to matter more. One of our senior designers, Huy, turned down a higher-paying job last year just because he preferred our team and the variety of projects we get. So I think money sets a baseline, but beyond that, it's really the working environment and the meaning of the work that matter most.

Not all decisions, but more than a lot of companies do now. Some decisions, like financial strategy or legal matters, need to stay with specialists or managers, because involving everyone would just slow things down. But decisions that affect daily work directly, like office layout or which tools the team uses, benefit a lot from employee input, because the people doing the work usually understand the practical problems better than managers do. At our studio, when the team was asked before switching to a new project management tool, it went much more smoothly than earlier changes that were just announced. Music works fast especially — putting on an upbeat playlist while I'm sketching ideas in the morning noticeably lifts my mood before I've even had coffee. I think they often do, at least indirectly. Positive people are usually easier to work and cooperate with, which makes group projects and everyday interactions go more smoothly. At work, we have a project manager, Phương, who stays calm and upbeat even during tight deadlines, and it clearly changes how the rest of the team handles pressure — people panic less around her. Being positive can also spread to others, encouraging them to help out rather than withdraw. That said, contribution isn't only about attitude — skill and effort matter just as much, so a positive but passive person wouldn't necessarily contribute more than a hardworking neutral one.

Probably somewhat, yes, though I don't think attitude alone can fix bigger problems like poverty or inequality. If people had a more positive attitude generally, communities might become more supportive and quicker to let go of small conflicts, which would improve everyday life. But there's also a risk in focusing too much on positivity — people going through real hardship can end up feeling pressured to hide their problems behind a cheerful face, which isn't healthy either. So I think a moderate shift towards positivity, along with honesty about real difficulties, would probably make society happier, rather than positivity being treated as some kind of universal fix.

Yes, I think good teachers can usually tell when a child is unhappy, especially if they know their students well. My friend Trang teaches fourth grade near Marble Mountains, and she once told me about a quiet boy in her class, Duy, who suddenly stopped joining group activities and barely spoke. At first she thought he was just shy, but she noticed he wasn't eating his lunch and always looked tired, so she asked him if something was wrong. It turned out he was having trouble at home. Some kids hide their feelings well, but teachers who notice small changes can usually sense when something is wrong.

Yes, I think it is partly a teacher's responsibility to manage how much students compete with each other. Too much competition can make school feel stressful instead of supportive. When I was in grade eleven in Hue, my literature teacher, Ms. Ha, noticed some of us were becoming obsessed with our class rankings. She started pairing top students with those who struggled more, not just for group projects but for small daily tasks too. This changed the mood in class a lot, and we ended up helping each other instead of comparing test scores all the time. A little friendly rivalry can be motivating, but teachers should step in if it becomes unhealthy.

Yes, I'd argue it's partly a teacher's responsibility to manage how much students compete with one another, since unchecked competition can turn school stressful rather than supportive. When I was in grade eleven in Hue, my literature teacher, Ms. Ha, noticed that some of us had become fairly obsessed with our class rankings. The closing claim ends flatly on 'matter just as much as salary', without the extra concessive twist ('if not more') that both higher bands add.Khẳng định kết luận kết thúc phẳng lặng ở 'matter just as much as salary', không có bước ngoặt nhượng bộ thêm ('if not more') mà cả hai band điểm cao hơn đều thêm vào.

I don't think higher salaries can fix every problem people have at work. More money definitely helps with things like rent or family expenses, but it doesn't make a stressful environment or bad management disappear. Last year, my colleague Minh got a generous raise after working late nights on a big app launch. At first he was thrilled, but after a few months he started feeling worn out because our team leader kept giving him extra tasks and never gave much feedback. He told me he was thinking about finding a different job where he'd feel more valued. I think feeling respected and having a reasonable workload matter just as much as salary.

I don't think higher salaries can fix every issue people have at work. More money certainly helps with immediate concerns, like paying rent or supporting family, but it doesn't make stressful environments or poor management magically disappear. For example, last year my colleague Minh got a pretty generous raise after working late nights on a big app launch. At first he was thrilled, but after a few months he started feeling worn out because our team leader kept piling on extra tasks and rarely gave feedback. He told me over lunch that, despite the bigger paycheck, he was considering looking for a different job where he'd feel more valued. Honestly, I think feeling respected and having reasonable workloads matter just as much as salary, if not more.

Personally, I don't think earning money should be the ultimate goal of work, even though it's obviously important. My friend Thao works as a primary school teacher in Da Nang. She could earn more if she moved to a private language centre, but she genuinely loves helping kids learn. Last month I visited her class and saw how excited she was when her students finally understood a tricky maths problem. She said moments like that made her feel truly happy, much more than any bonus would. Everyone needs a decent income to cover basics, of course, but I think real satisfaction comes from feeling you're making a difference.
