Band 6.5

The answer states the film's details and effect in plain, direct sentences ('It's a simple film, but it stayed with me for a long time') with points simply added using 'also.'Câu trả lời nêu chi tiết bộ phim và cảm nhận về nó bằng những câu đơn giản, trực tiếp ('Đây là một bộ phim đơn giản, nhưng nó đọng lại trong mình rất lâu') với các ý được thêm vào một cách đơn giản bằng từ 'ngoài ra.'

A film I really enjoyed was a Vietnamese film called Mắt Biếc, which I watched at CGV cinema in Vincom Mall in Da Nang.

I saw it with my younger sister, who was visiting from Ho Chi Minh City for a few days. We didn't have a specific plan for the evening, so we decided to watch whatever was showing, and she picked this one because she had read the original book.

The film is about a young man who loves the same woman his whole life, from childhood until they are both adults, even though she never really loves him back in the same way. It moves between the countryside where they grew up and the city where they later live separate lives.

Why I enjoyed it is that it reminded me a lot of Hue, where I grew up, with the old houses, the rivers, and the slow pace of life in the countryside scenes. The story is quite sad, and by the end both my sister and I were crying a little in the cinema, which felt a bit embarrassing but also nice to share with her. It also made us talk about our own childhood in Hue on the way home, which we don't usually do. It's a simple film, but it stayed with me for a long time.

  • LRA film I really enjoyed was a Vietnamese film called Mắt Biếc, which I watched at CGV cinema in Vincom Mall in Da Nang. The opening sentence states the film's title, genre, and viewing location factually, using simple vocabulary and a basic relative clause purely to add the cinema location, with no evaluative or descriptive language yet.
  • FCIt also made us talk about our own childhood in Hue on the way home, which we don't usually do.The additional point about the film prompting a conversation about their own childhood is introduced with the simple connector "also", tacking it on as one more fact rather than developing why that conversation mattered. That kind of straightforward, connector-led addition, without further elaboration, is a typical Band 6.5 linking strategy, the ideas are connected, but only loosely.Ý bổ sung về việc bộ phim khơi gợi một cuộc trò chuyện về tuổi thơ của chính họ được đưa vào bằng liên từ đơn giản "also", gắn thêm như một sự kiện nữa thay vì phát triển lý do vì sao cuộc trò chuyện đó lại quan trọng.
  • GRAIt's a simple film, but it stayed with me for a long time."It's a simple film, but it stayed with me for a long time" is a short sentence joined by a single "but", correct and clear but structurally as basic as a complex sentence gets. That minimal, coordinated closing is the Band 6.5 grammar ceiling, it wraps up the answer accurately without attempting any more ambitious structure.“It's a simple film, but it stayed with me for a long time” là một câu ngắn được nối bằng một liên từ "but" duy nhất, đúng và rõ ràng nhưng về mặt cấu trúc thì đơn giản gần như mức tối thiểu của một câu phức.
Band 7.0

The answer links the film's structure and the shared emotional reaction with comfortable complex sentences and paired contrasting adjectives ('embarrassing... strangely nice'), staying fluent without unusual vocabulary.Câu trả lời liên kết cấu trúc bộ phim và phản ứng cảm xúc được chia sẻ bằng những câu phức tự nhiên và cặp tính từ đối lập nhau ('ngại...

A film I really enjoyed watching was a Vietnamese film called Mắt Biếc, which I saw at a CGV cinema in one of the malls in Da Nang, not too long after it came out.

I went with my younger sister, who happened to be visiting from Ho Chi Minh City for a few days. We didn't really plan the evening in advance — we just checked what was showing and picked this one, mainly because she'd already read the original novel and wanted to see how it compared.

The film follows a young man who's in love with the same woman for practically his whole life, from childhood right through adulthood, even though she never quite feels the same way about him. It shifts back and forth between the countryside where they grew up and the city, where they end up living fairly separate lives.

The reason I enjoyed it so much is that it reminded me a lot of Hue, where I'm originally from — the old houses, the river, the generally slower pace of life in the countryside scenes felt very familiar. The story itself is quite sad, and by the end my sister and I were both a bit teary in the cinema, which felt slightly embarrassing at the time but also strangely nice to share with her. Afterwards, on the way home, we ended up talking about our own childhood in Hue in a way we don't usually get around to, which was probably the best part of the evening. It's not a flashy or complicated film, but it's stayed with me longer than most things I've watched recently.

  • GRAWe didn't really plan the evening in advance — we just checked what was showing and picked this one, mainly because she'd already read the original novelA dash introduces an elaborating clause ("we just checked what was showing and picked this one"), itself extended by a because-clause giving the specific reason (the sister had read the novel) -- three ideas chained together accurately in one breath, the "comfortable mix of simple and complex sentences" the Band 7.0 grammar target describes, without the more deliberate rhetorical shaping a 7.5 answer might use.
  • FCIt shifts back and forth between the countryside where they grew up and the city, where they end up living fairly separate livesTwo relative clauses ("where they grew up," "where they end up living...") attach concrete detail to "countryside" and "city" respectively, letting the sentence summarize the film's structure and its emotional outcome (separate lives) in one continuous flow rather than a list of separate facts. This is the reason-plus-concrete-detail development the Band 7.0 fluency and coherence target rewards, moving the plot summary forward efficiently instead of stalling on description.Hai mệnh đề quan hệ ("where they grew up," "where they end up living...") lần lượt gắn thêm chi tiết cụ thể vào "countryside" và "city", cho phép câu văn tóm tắt cả cấu trúc bộ phim lẫn kết cục cảm xúc của nó (những cuộc đời tách biệt) trong một mạch liên tục thay vì một danh sách các sự kiện rời rạc. Đây chính là kiểu phát triển ý bằng lý do cộng chi tiết cụ thể mà tiêu chí độ trôi chảy và mạch lạc Band 7.0 đánh giá cao, giúp phần tóm tắt cốt truyện tiến triển hiệu quả thay vì bị mắc kẹt ở khâu mô tả.
  • LRwhich felt slightly embarrassing at the time but also strangely nice to share with herPairing two contrasting emotional adjectives, "embarrassing" and "strangely nice," each hedged with an intensifier ("slightly," "strangely"), shows more nuanced emotional vocabulary than a single flat word like "emotional" would -- the flexible, topic-specific vocabulary the Band 7.0 lexical target wants, capturing a genuinely mixed feeling rather than a simple one. It also mirrors the real ambivalence of crying in public with a sibling, which the surrounding context describes directly.
  • FCIt's not a flashy or complicated film, but it's stayed with me longer than most things I've watched recently. The "not X, but Y" contrastive frame sets a negative expectation (flashy, complicated) against the actual outcome (staying power), turning a simple recommendation into a small reflective judgment about the film's lasting effect -- exactly the reason-and-reflection close the Band 7.0 fluency and coherence target wants, rather than a flat "I really liked it." A 6.5 closing would likely just restate liking the film without this comparative framing.
Band 7.5

The answer is carried by a witty, self-correcting aside about fish-sauce popcorn and an embedded appositive describing the film's key scene, closing on the understated 'made it one of my better Saturdays.'Câu trả lời được dẫn dắt bởi một lời chêm dí dỏm, tự sửa lại ý mình về món bỏng ngô nước mắm, cùng một cụm đồng vị được lồng ghép miêu tả cảnh phim then chốt, kết thúc bằng câu văn kín đáo 'khiến đó trở thành một trong những ngày thứ Bảy đáng nhớ nhất của mình.'

A film I really enjoyed was Everything Everywhere All at Once. I didn't see it at the cinema — I saw it on the wall of my colleague Trang's apartment, on a rainy Saturday last year, with four of us from the studio squeezed onto a sofa built for two. Trang has a cheap projector and a white wall and takes film nights very seriously; she'd even made popcorn with fish sauce, which sounds terrible and wasn't.

The film is about a middle-aged woman who runs a laundromat and is drowning in tax problems and family arguments, and then finds out she can jump between parallel versions of her own life — versions where she's a film star, a chef, a woman with hot dogs for fingers. It's completely chaotic on the surface. But underneath all that noise it's really about her relationship with her daughter, and about the moment a parent decides to actually see their child rather than the version they wanted.

Why I enjoyed it so much is a bit personal. My relationship with my mum has had a version of that argument — she wanted me to study medicine, I chose design — and there's a scene near the end, two rocks sitting on a cliff with subtitles, that had all four of us silent. Nobody expected to cry at a film with a raccoon chef in it.

As a designer I also loved the sheer inventiveness. Every universe has its own colours and rhythm, and the editing is so fast you feel it in your chest. It's the rare film that's genuinely fun and genuinely about something, and watching it with people I like, in a room that smelled of fish-sauce popcorn, made it one of my better Saturdays.

Một bộ phim tôi thực sự rất thích là "Everything Everywhere All at Once".

  • LRTrang has a cheap projector and a white wall and takes film nights very seriously; she'd even made popcorn with fish sauce, which sounds terrible and wasn't.The witty self-correcting clause "which sounds terrible and wasn't" anticipates the listener's likely reaction and pre-empts it with dry understatement, a genuinely natural piece of humour rather than a straightforward description like "she made unusual popcorn" that a Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would give. The word choice throughout is also precise and economical -- "takes film nights very seriously" captures a whole personality trait in five words.
  • GRAthere's a scene near the end, two rocks sitting on a cliff with subtitles, that had all four of us silentAn appositive noun phrase ("two rocks sitting on a cliff with subtitles") is inserted mid-sentence to describe the scene, before the main relative clause ("that had all four of us silent") resumes and completes the thought -- a confident, varied grammatical structure that interrupts and resumes a sentence smoothly, which a Band 6.5 or 7.0 speaker would more likely avoid in favour of two separate, simpler sentences. The causative structure "had... silent" (rather than "made us go silent") is also a slightly more compact, less common way of expressing the same idea. This grammatical control matches the emotional weight of the moment it describes, letting the sentence pause and continue the way the described scene affected the viewers.Một cụm danh từ đồng vị ("two rocks sitting on a cliff with subtitles") được chèn vào giữa câu để mô tả cảnh tượng, trước khi mệnh đề quan hệ chính ("that had all four of us silent") tiếp tục và hoàn thành ý -- một cấu trúc ngữ pháp tự tin, đa dạng, ngắt và tiếp tục câu một cách trơn tru, điều mà một thí sinh Band 6.5 hoặc 7.0 nhiều khả năng sẽ tránh, thay vào đó dùng hai câu riêng biệt, đơn giản hơn.
  • FCmade it one of my better SaturdaysThis understated closing phrase -- "one of my better Saturdays" rather than "the best Saturday of my life" -- delivers genuine, low-key reflection rather than an overstated summary, a more mature evaluative move than the flatter, more literal closing statement a Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would likely produce ("it was a really fun evening"). The comparative form also implies a whole set of remembered Saturdays being weighed against each other, suggesting the speaker has a habit of noticing good moments rather than this being an isolated exceptional event. It ties the sensory detail from earlier in the answer (the smell of fish-sauce popcorn) into the closing judgment, grounding the reflection in something concrete rather than abstract praise.Cụm từ kết bài mang tính giảm nhẹ này -- "one of my better Saturdays" (một trong những ngày thứ Bảy tốt hơn của tôi) thay vì "the best Saturday of my life" -- mang lại sự suy ngẫm chân thực, kín đáo thay vì một bản tóm tắt bị phóng đại, một động thái đánh giá trưởng thành hơn so với câu kết bài phẳng lặng, theo nghĩa đen hơn mà một câu trả lời Band 6.5 hoặc 7.0 nhiều khả năng sẽ đưa ra ("it was a really fun evening").

This answer joins short, plain sentences with 'and' and 'but' to list film types with concrete examples, using everyday vocabulary throughout.Câu trả lời này dùng 'and' và 'but' để nối các câu ngắn gọn, đơn giản nhằm liệt kê các thể loại phim kèm ví dụ cụ thể, sử dụng từ vựng đời thường xuyên suốt.

Comedies are the most popular, especially the Vietnamese ones released around Tết, because every cinema in Da Nang is full for those, and the whole family goes together. Horror films also do surprisingly well with younger people, and the big American action franchises have a loyal audience too. Romantic dramas from Korea are also very popular, but mostly at home rather than in the cinema. What does not do well is anything slow or serious. My friend and I once watched a beautiful Vietnamese art film, and there were only six people in the whole screening. I think here, people see cinema as something to do in a group, rather than something to do alone, so films that work well with a crowd tend to win.

    • FCWhat does not do well is anything slow or serious. This sentence introduces the contrast plainly, as a short, fresh statement. A band 7 answer would more likely fold this into the flow more naturally with the word 'struggles' instead of the fuller 'does not do well', tightening the transition.Câu này nêu ra sự đối lập một cách trực tiếp, như một phát biểu ngắn gọn, mới mẻ. Một câu trả lời band 7 nhiều khả năng sẽ lồng ghép ý này vào mạch văn tự nhiên hơn bằng cách dùng từ 'struggles' thay vì cụm đầy đủ hơn 'does not do well', giúp phần chuyển ý gọn hơn.
    • LRthere were only six people in the whole screeningThis is plain, literal phrasing. A higher band answer would likely rephrase this more naturally as 'a screening with six people in it', which reads more like an authentic spoken observation than the fuller, slightly more formal version here.Đây là cách diễn đạt đơn giản, khá sát nghĩa đen. Một câu trả lời band cao hơn nhiều khả năng sẽ diễn đạt tự nhiên hơn thành 'a screening with six people in it', nghe giống một nhận xét thật ngoài đời hơn là phiên bản đầy đủ, hơi trang trọng hơn ở đây.
    • GRAI think here, people see cinema as something to do in a group, rather than something to do alone, so films that work well with a crowd tend to win. This closing sentence repeats the phrase 'something to do' twice within one clause, which is accurate but slightly repetitive. A 7.5 answer would likely vary this, describing cinema as a 'group outing' instead of repeating the same structure twice.Câu kết này lặp lại cụm 'something to do' hai lần trong cùng một mệnh đề, chính xác nhưng hơi lặp.

    • FCWhat struggles is anything slow or serious:The single verb 'struggles' names the contrast more efficiently than the 6.5 answer's fuller 'does not do well', and the colon launches directly into the supporting example. This more economical transition is typical of band 7 coherence.
    • LRin a screening with six people in itThis natural, compact phrasing reads more like an authentic spoken observation than the fuller 'there were only six people in the whole screening' a 6.5 answer uses. It shows developing fluency in natural sentence construction.Cách diễn đạt tự nhiên, gọn gàng này nghe giống một nhận xét thật ngoài đời hơn so với cụm đầy đủ 'there were only six people in the whole screening' mà câu trả lời 6.5 sử dụng. • GRApeople here treat cinema as a group outing rather than a solitary experienceThis sentence uses two distinct, precisely contrasted nouns ('a group outing', 'a solitary experience') rather than repeating the phrase 'something to do' as a 6.5 answer does. This shows more grammatical and lexical variety in building the same contrast.Câu này dùng hai danh từ khác nhau, đối lập chính xác với nhau ('a group outing', 'a solitary experience') thay vì lặp lại cụm 'something to do' như câu trả lời 6.5.

I think it depends on the film. Something big and loud is a very different experience in a cinema. I saw an action film at CGV last year, and the seats actually shook, which no home setup can do. The cinema also forces you to pay attention, because you cannot check your phone or pause to make tea. But for a quiet drama, or anything I want to think about, home is better. I can rewind a scene, watch with subtitles in two languages, and talk about it with whoever is on the sofa. Cost matters too, because a cinema night for two people in Da Nang costs about the same as a nice dinner. So cinema is good for big films, and home is better for everything else.

    • FCThe cinema also forces you to pay attention, because you cannot check your phone or pause to make tea. This point is added with the plain word 'also' followed by 'because'. A band 7 answer would more likely tighten this into one flowing clause without the extra connector, describing the cinema as forcing attention because 'you can't check your phone or pause to make tea', joined directly with a semicolon or dash.Ý này được thêm vào bằng từ 'also' đơn giản rồi tới 'because'. Một câu trả lời band 7 nhiều khả năng sẽ gói gọn thành một mệnh đề liền mạch, bỏ bớt từ nối thừa, mô tả rạp chiếu phim buộc người xem tập trung vì 'you can't check your phone or pause to make tea', nối trực tiếp bằng dấu chấm phẩy hoặc dấu gạch ngang.
    • LRthe seats actually shook, which no home setup can doThis is clear but fairly plain phrasing. A higher band answer would likely use a more natural, idiomatic way to express the same idea, describing it as something 'no home setup is doing that', matching authentic informal spoken grammar.Cách diễn đạt này rõ ràng nhưng khá đơn giản. Một câu trả lời band cao hơn nhiều khả năng sẽ dùng cách diễn đạt tự nhiên, thành ngữ hơn cho cùng một ý, nói là 'no home setup is doing that', khớp với ngữ pháp khẩu ngữ không trang trọng thực thụ.
    • GRASo cinema is good for big films, and home is better for everything else. This closing sentence uses the plain connector 'and' to join two parallel claims.

    • GRAThe cinema also forces attention; no phones, no pausing for tea.The semicolon here introduces a verbless, parallel two-item list ('no phones, no pausing for tea') rather than a fuller clause with 'you can't', dropping the subject and verb entirely for maximum economy. For some people, it is simply the format. A friend of mine who acts in theatre in Hanoi spends more time sitting in cafés watching how people hold their cups and avoid eye contact than she does practising her lines, because that is where the truth of a character comes from.

I think it is true, but not in the way most people imagine. For my friend in Hanoi, the performing itself is not really the hard part, it is that she teaches English all day to pay rent, rehearses until midnight, and still gets rejected at most auditions even after ten years. The difficulty is the instability, because there is no guaranteed income, no clear career ladder, and her face is her main asset as she gets older. On film sets, there is also the physical tiredness of very long days repeating the same two minutes again and again. The glamorous version people imagine probably applies to about one actor in a thousand. For everyone else, it is a difficult job mostly because it rarely even looks like a job at all.

I think they are less important than the film industry believes, but not unimportant. A Vietnamese film a couple of years ago broke the domestic box office record with two almost unknown lead actors, purely because people told their friends the film was good. So a good story and word of mouth can beat star power. But famous actors do lower the risk for a film, because they get it financed in the first place and they guarantee a good opening weekend, which is why studios keep paying for them. I think people need quite a lot of entertainment, but I would define it more broadly than just films and games. My grandmother has never streamed anything in her life. Her entertainment is gossiping on the doorstep, the moon festival, and arguing with the fruit seller, and she is one of the most content people I know. I think what people need is a break from effort and some pleasure that is not productive, because the brain seems to need that to keep working well. The modern problem is that we have turned entertainment into a product we consume alone, which meets the need for rest but not the need for connection. So people need entertainment, but not necessarily in the form that companies try to sell it in.

Quite a lot, but I'd define entertainment far more broadly than films and games. My grandmother has never streamed anything in her life; her entertainment is gossip on the doorstep, the moon festival, and arguing with the fruit seller, and she's one of the most contented people I know. What people need is a break from effort and some pleasure that isn't productive — the brain seems to require that to keep functioning well. The modern problem is that we've turned entertainment into something consumed alone, which meets the need for rest but not the need for connection. So people need it, but not necessarily in the form the industry sells it.

I think there is something to this view, and I admit I am guilty of it myself. I once realised I had spent three evenings in a row watching short videos while my sister's messages sat unanswered, and entertainment had quietly replaced a relationship instead of just sitting beside it. I do not think entertainment itself is the problem, it is that it is now designed to be endless, so it takes up the time that used to be left over for other things. On the other hand, entertainment and important things are not always separate, because watching a film with friends is a relationship, and a documentary is a form of learning. So I think the view is right about the danger, but a little too simple about the solution. The real fix is boundaries, not giving up pleasure completely.

    • FCI do not think entertainment itself is the problem, it is that it is now designed to be endless, so it takes up the time that used to be left over for other things. This long sentence chains three ideas together with commas and 'so', which is accurate but somewhat linear. A band 7 answer would more likely break the middle idea off with a semicolon, giving the sentence a sharper, more deliberate structural pause.Câu dài này nối ba ý bằng dấu phẩy và 'so', chính xác nhưng hơi tuyến tính.
    • LRit takes up the time that used to be left over for other thingsThis is clear but fairly wordy phrasing. A higher band answer would likely tighten this comparative idea into a more compact phrase, describing entertainment as taking 'the time that used to be left over', which reads more naturally in spoken English.Đây là cách diễn đạt rõ ràng nhưng khá dài dòng.
