IELTS Speaking Part 2

A Famous Person You Would Like to Meet

Gần nhất ra thi tháng 5–8/2026

Đề bài (cue card)

Describe a famous person you would like to meet

You should say:

  • Who he/she is
  • How you knew him/her
  • How/where you would like to meet him/her

Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer stays close to simple description and one plain reason ('the lyrics are very simple and honest'), moving through the four cue-card points without much elaboration, typical of controlled Band 6.5 fluency.Câu trả lời band 6.5 bám sát vào mô tả đơn giản và một lý do mộc mạc ('ca từ rất giản dị và chân thật'), đi qua bốn điểm gợi ý trên thẻ đề mà không triển khai nhiều, đặc trưng cho sự trôi chảy có kiểm soát của Band 6.5.

The famous person I would like to meet is Đen Vâu, a Vietnamese rapper. He is very popular in Vietnam now, and I think almost everyone my age knows his songs.

I first knew about him a few years ago, when a colleague at my studio played one of his songs in the office. I didn't like rap music much before that, but his songs are different, because the lyrics are very simple and honest, and they talk about ordinary life, like family, hometown, and small struggles. After that, I started listening to his albums on my way to work.

If I could meet him, I would like it to be somewhere quiet, maybe backstage after a concert, not in a big crowd. I don't think I would ask for a photo straight away. I would just like to tell him how his music helped me during a hard year, and ask him how he writes such simple but meaningful lyrics.

I would like to meet him because his songs feel very real, not fake like a lot of pop music. He talks about things like missing your hometown, which I really understand, since I moved away from Hue myself. Meeting him would feel like meeting someone who already understands me a little.

  • FCI first knew about him a few years ago, when a colleague at my studio played one of his songs in the office. This sentence narrates the origin of the interest in strict chronological order — time marker, then event — using a single 'when'-clause, without embedding any evaluation or reflection about why the moment mattered. A 7.0 answer would likely follow this immediately with a reason clause in the same sentence; a 7.5 answer might open with a more reflective framing instead of a plain timeline. Here the direct, sequential narration clearly establishes the facts of how the speaker discovered Đen Vâu, the 'direct chronological' style that defines Band 6.5 development.Câu này tường thuật nguồn gốc của niềm đam mê theo đúng trình tự thời gian nghiêm ngặt — mốc thời gian, rồi đến sự kiện — dùng một mệnh đề 'when' duy nhất, không lồng vào bất kỳ sự đánh giá hay suy ngẫm nào về lý do vì sao khoảnh khắc đó quan trọng.
  • LRvery real, not fake like a lot of pop musicThe evaluation uses simple, high-frequency vocabulary ('very real, not fake') rather than more precise or varied wording, fitting the modest Band 6.5 lexical target.Lời đánh giá dùng từ vựng đơn giản, thường gặp ('rất thật, không giả tạo') thay vì cách diễn đạt chính xác hay đa dạng hơn, phù hợp với mục tiêu từ vựng khiêm tốn của Band 6.5.
  • GRAbecause the lyrics are very simple and honest, and they talk about ordinary life, like family, hometown, and small strugglesA single 'because'-clause is extended with a coordinated list of topics — 'family, hometown, and small struggles' — joined by 'and,' giving one reason plenty of supporting detail without introducing further subordination or a second independent clause. A 7.0 answer would likely tighten this into a more varied structure, perhaps splitting the list into its own clause; a 7.5 answer might use a more selective, figurative description instead of a plain list. This because-clause-plus-list pattern is accurate and communicative, fitting the basic-to-moderate complexity ceiling of Band 6.5 while still conveying genuine, specific content.Một mệnh đề 'because' duy nhất được mở rộng bằng một danh sách chủ đề được phối hợp — 'family, hometown, and small struggles' — nối bằng 'and,' mang lại cho một lý do khá nhiều chi tiết bổ trợ mà không cần thêm mệnh đề phụ hay một mệnh đề độc lập thứ hai.
Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer develops each cue-card point with one added reason and a concrete detail (discovering the book because 'the cover was completely plain white'), and links ideas with natural spoken connectors like 'As for meeting him', without reaching for idiomatic language.Câu trả lời band 7.0 phát triển mỗi điểm trên thẻ đề bằng một lý do bổ sung và một chi tiết cụ thể (biết đến cuốn sách vì 'bìa sách trắng tinh không có gì'), và nối các ý bằng những từ nối tự nhiên trong văn nói như 'Còn về việc gặp ông', mà không cần dùng ngôn ngữ thành ngữ.

The famous person I'd like to meet is Kenya Hara, a Japanese designer who has been the art director of MUJI for many years. He isn't really a celebrity in the normal sense - most people wouldn't recognise his face - but in the design world, he's someone almost everyone respects.

I found out about him quite by chance. During my second year at university in Hanoi, I was putting off an assignment in the library and picked up a book called Designing Design, mainly because the cover was completely plain white. I ended up reading a good chunk of it standing right there. His main idea is that empty space isn't really empty - it's more like an invitation, a space where the viewer can add their own meaning. It sounded a bit abstract at first, but it actually changed the way I design app screens. I stopped trying to fill every single corner of a page.

As for meeting him, I wouldn't want it to be a formal interview, because I'd probably get too nervous to speak properly. He gives talks occasionally, and there was one in Tokyo last year that a friend of mine went to and described in a lot of detail afterwards. I'd love to be in the audience for something like that, and then, if I was lucky, ask him one question at the end - whether he thinks his idea of quiet, simple design can really work on a phone screen, where everything is competing for attention.

The reason I'd choose him over someone more famous is that he's the only well-known person whose work has genuinely made me better at my job. Meeting an actor or a singer would be exciting for one afternoon, but meeting him could actually change how I design for years to come.

  • FCI ended up reading a good chunk of it standing right thereThis sentence adds a small, vivid physical detail — reading while standing in the library aisle rather than sitting down — that makes the discovery of the book feel spontaneous and immediate, rather than a flat statement like 'I found the book interesting.' A 6.5 answer would likely skip this physical detail entirely; a 7.5 answer might push further into a reflective aside about what that moment felt like. Grounding the story in this specific concrete action, rather than just stating a fact, is the fuller development 7.0 rewards, and it sets up the abstract idea about empty space that follows.Câu này thêm một chi tiết vật lý nhỏ, sống động — đứng đọc trong lối đi của thư viện thay vì ngồi xuống — khiến việc phát hiện ra cuốn sách có cảm giác tự phát, tức thời, thay vì một phát biểu bằng phẳng như 'I found the book interesting.'
  • LRputting off an assignmentThe natural, everyday collocation 'putting off an assignment' is a flexible phrase slightly beyond the plainest vocabulary, matching the Band 7.0 target.Cụm từ tự nhiên, thường ngày 'putting off an assignment' (trì hoãn làm bài tập) là một cách diễn đạt linh hoạt, vượt nhẹ ra ngoài vốn từ đơn giản nhất, đúng với mục tiêu của Band 7.0.
  • GRAmainly because the cover was completely plain whiteThe because-clause is modified by the intensifying adverb 'completely,' sharpening a fairly mundane reason — picking up a book for its cover — into a specific, almost ironic detail: the plainness of the cover foreshadows the designer's whole philosophy about empty space discussed a sentence later. A 6.5 answer would likely give the reason without the intensifier, as a flatter statement; a 7.5 answer might integrate this reason into a more complex sentence altogether.
Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer closes with a sharp, reflective contrast ('Meeting an actor or a footballer would be exciting for an afternoon. Meeting him might change what I do for the next twenty years.'), the kind of evaluative payoff that marks Band 7.5 fluency and coherence.Câu trả lời band 7.5 kết thúc bằng một sự tương phản sắc bén, giàu suy ngẫm ('Gặp một diễn viên hay cầu thủ bóng đá có thể thú vị trong một buổi chiều. Gặp ông ấy có thể thay đổi việc tôi làm trong hai mươi năm tới.'), đúng kiểu điểm nhấn đánh giá đánh dấu sự trôi chảy và mạch lạc của Band 7.5.

The famous person I'd like to meet is Kenya Hara, the Japanese designer who's been the art director of MUJI for years. He's not a celebrity in the usual sense — most people wouldn't recognise him in the street — but in my field he's something close to a legend.

I came across him by accident. In my second year at university in Hanoi, I was avoiding a deadline in the library and pulled out a book called Designing Design, mostly because the cover was completely white. I ended up reading half of it standing up. His whole idea is that emptiness isn't nothing — a blank space is an invitation, a place where the person looking at it can put their own meaning. That sounds abstract, but it changed how I design screens. I stopped trying to fill every corner.

As for how I'd like to meet him, not in a formal interview, honestly, because I'd freeze. He gives lectures occasionally, and there was one in Tokyo last year that a friend attended and described in painful detail. I'd love to be in that room, and then maybe, if I got lucky, ask him one question at the end. I know exactly what it would be: whether he thinks his idea of quiet, empty design can survive on a phone screen, where everything is fighting for attention.

Why him rather than someone more glamorous? I think it's because he's the only famous person whose work has actually made me better at my job. Meeting an actor or a footballer would be exciting for an afternoon. Meeting him might change what I do for the next twenty years.

• LRsomething close to a legend"Something close to a legend" hedges the word "legend" rather than stating it outright, which is a more sophisticated move than simply saying "he's famous" or even "he's a legend" — the hedge signals precision about status within a niche field rather than fame in general. This kind of figurative, carefully calibrated phrase is what the 7.5 tier means by "less-common words and collocations used naturally"; a 7.0 answer would likely settle for a plainer "he's very respected in my field." It also sets up the next paragraph's clarification that he isn't recognisable on the street, so the hedge is doing real logical work, not just sounding impressive.“Something close to a legend” rào đón từ “legend” thay vì khẳng định thẳng thừng, đây là một động thái tinh tế hơn nhiều so với chỉ nói “he's famous” hay thậm chí “he's a legend” -- lời rào đón này báo hiệu sự chính xác về địa vị trong một lĩnh vực ngách, chứ không phải sự nổi tiếng nói chung.
  • GRAand then maybe, if I got lucky, ask him one question at the endThe conditional "if I got lucky" is dropped into the middle of the sentence rather than placed at the front in the standard "If I got lucky, I would ask..." position, which takes more grammatical control to pull off without breaking the flow. This mid-sentence embedding is the kind of flexible clause placement the 7.5 tier's "wider grammatical range" targets, going beyond the safer, front-loaded conditionals a 7.0 answer would typically use. It also mirrors natural hesitant speech — the speaker sounds like they're genuinely working out the scenario as they talk, which supports fluency as well as grammar.Mệnh đề điều kiện "if I got lucky" được chèn vào giữa câu thay vì đặt ở đầu theo vị trí tiêu chuẩn "If I got lucky, I would ask...", điều này đòi hỏi nhiều khả năng kiểm soát ngữ pháp hơn để thực hiện mà không làm gãy mạch câu.
  • FCMeeting an actor or a footballer would be exciting for an afternoon. Meeting him might change what I do for the next twenty years. The two sentences are built on identical grammar (a gerund subject plus a modal verb) but pull in opposite directions on scale — "an afternoon" against "twenty years" — which is a deliberately constructed parallel contrast rather than a spontaneous afterthought. This kind of engineered rhetorical payoff, closing the whole answer on a reflective value judgement, is exactly the evaluative depth the 7.5 tier expects beyond description; a 7.0 answer would likely end on a simpler single statement like "I'd really like to meet him because his work inspires me." The parallelism also gives the ending real rhythm, which supports the delivery side of a strong spoken response.

    Band 6.5

This answer lists categories in short, plainly connected sentences using 'and' and 'because', giving concrete examples in everyday vocabulary such as 'important national news' and 'more attention'.Câu trả lời này liệt kê các nhóm bằng những câu ngắn, được nối đơn giản bằng "and" và "because", đưa ra ví dụ cụ thể bằng từ vựng đời thường như "important national news" và "more attention".

Singers and actors are the main ones, and then footballers, especially the national team's coach right now, because every press conference he gives becomes news. Business people also appear a lot, like a couple of billionaires whose company announcements get treated like important national news. Politicians are in the news too, of course, but the coverage of them is more formal and less about gossip. One thing that has changed recently is that online personalities are becoming more famous, like a beauty influencer or a funny TikToker, who can get more attention in one week than a serious writer gets in their whole career. If I look at my news feed, it is mostly the same fifteen faces again and again.

    • FCOne thing that has changed recently is that online personalities are becoming more famousThis transition is introduced with the plain, fairly generic phrase 'One thing that has changed recently is that'. A band 7 answer would more likely mark this shift more naturally, framing it as 'What's changed in the last few years' to sound more like spoken reflection.Sự chuyển ý này được mở đầu bằng cụm từ bình thường, khá chung chung "One thing that has changed recently is that". Một câu trả lời band 7 nhiều khả năng sẽ đánh dấu sự chuyển đổi này tự nhiên hơn, diễn đạt thành "What's changed in the last few years" để nghe giống như một suy ngẫm khi nói hơn.
    • LRget more attention in one week than a serious writer gets in their whole careerThis is a clear but fairly literal comparison. A higher band answer would likely phrase this contrast more sharply, for instance saying someone can 'generate more headlines in a week than a serious writer does in a career', tightening the comparison with more precise vocabulary.Đây là một phép so sánh rõ ràng nhưng khá theo nghĩa đen. Một câu trả lời band cao hơn nhiều khả năng sẽ diễn đạt sự tương phản này sắc bén hơn, chẳng hạn nói ai đó có thể "generate more headlines in a week than a serious writer does in a career", làm cho phép so sánh chặt chẽ hơn bằng từ vựng chính xác hơn.
    • GRABusiness people also appear a lot, like a couple of billionaires whose company announcements get treated like important national news. This sentence adds an example with the connector 'like' inside a fairly long single clause. A 7.5 answer would likely break this into two shorter linked ideas using a comma and 'a couple of billionaires whose...', avoiding the slightly heavy single-clause structure.Câu này thêm một ví dụ bằng liên từ "like" trong một mệnh đề đơn khá dài. Một câu trả lời 7.5 nhiều khả năng sẽ tách nó thành hai ý ngắn hơn, nối bằng dấu phẩy và "a couple of billionaires whose...", tránh cấu trúc một mệnh đề hơi nặng nề.
    Band 7.0

The verb 'dominate' and the dash-set example give this answer more precise, flexible phrasing than a 6.5 response's plainer listing, while the aside 'to be honest' adds natural spoken reflection to the closing line.Động từ "dominate" cùng ví dụ được đặt sau dấu gạch ngang khiến câu trả lời này có cách diễn đạt chính xác, linh hoạt hơn so với cách liệt kê đơn giản hơn của câu trả lời 6.5, trong khi cụm chêm "to be honest" thêm vào câu kết một sắc thái suy ngẫm tự nhiên khi nói.

Singers and actors dominate, then footballers and, at the moment, the national team's coach, whose every press conference seems to be news. Business figures come up a lot too — a couple of billionaires whose company announcements get treated like national events. Politicians appear, of course, but coverage of them is more formal and less gossipy. What's changed in the last few years, I'd say, is the rise of online personalities: a beauty influencer or a comedy TikToker can now generate more headlines in a week than a serious writer does in a career. If I scroll my news feed, it's roughly the same fifteen faces rotating, to be honest.

• FCWhat's changed in the last few years, I'd say, is the rise of online personalities:The aside 'I'd say' is folded into the middle of this transition sentence rather than placed at the start, giving it a more natural, spoken rhythm. A 6.5 answer would more likely open this same point with the plainer, more generic phrase 'One thing that has changed recently is that'.Cụm chêm "I'd say" được lồng vào giữa câu chuyển ý này thay vì đặt ở đầu câu, tạo nhịp điệu tự nhiên hơn khi nói. Một câu trả lời 6.5 nhiều khả năng sẽ mở ý này bằng cụm bình thường, chung chung hơn "One thing that has changed recently is that".
    • LRcan now generate more headlines in a week than a serious writer does in a career'Generate more headlines' is a more precise, media-specific phrase than the plainer 'get more attention' a 6.5 answer would use, fitting the topic of news coverage more exactly.
    • GRABusiness figures come up a lot too — a couple of billionaires whose company announcements get treated like national events. The dash attaches the example directly to the general claim without a connecting word like 'like', showing a more flexible way of adding illustrative detail than a 6.5 answer's fuller single-clause version.
    Band 7.5

The imperative-conditional 'Scroll my news feed and it's...' and the closing evaluative clause 'which says something about what actually gets clicks' give this answer compressed grammar and a sharp final observation typical of band 7.5.Cấu trúc mệnh lệnh-điều kiện "Scroll my news feed and it's..." cùng mệnh đề đánh giá kết thúc "which says something about what actually gets clicks" mang lại cho câu trả lời này ngữ pháp cô đọng và một nhận xét kết thúc sắc bén, đặc trưng của band 7.5.

    • FCwhich says something about what actually gets clicksThis closing clause draws a wider, slightly cynical conclusion about the media system itself, going beyond simply describing the pattern of names. I think there are far more now, but most of them are famous for less. My grandmother can name maybe ten celebrities from her youth, just a few singers and a couple of film stars, and they stayed famous for decades. I could probably name hundreds of famous people, but half of them will probably be forgotten by next year. The internet made it cheaper to become known, because now you just need a phone and one lucky week, instead of a record label or a film studio. So the number of famous people has grown a lot, but fame itself has become thinner and shorter. The truly famous people, the ones everyone from every generation knows, are probably not more common than before.

Not anymore, and I am not sure they ever really did. A woman who sells bánh xèo in Da Nang became famous all over the country last year because of a ten-second video of her scolding a rude customer. • LRthe singers who are still around in ten years can actually sing'Still around' is a natural, moderately idiomatic way of describing lasting relevance, more compact than a fuller phrase like 'still famous after ten years'. It shows developing fluency in natural collocation."Still around" là một cách diễn đạt tự nhiên, khá thành ngữ để mô tả sự liên quan lâu dài, gọn hơn một cụm đầy đủ hơn như "still famous after ten years".

Not any more, and I'm not sure they ever did entirely. A woman who sells bánh xèo in Da Nang became nationally known last year over a ten-second clip of her scolding a rude customer — funny, it went viral, and for a month she was doing the rounds on talk shows. No talent involved beyond being herself at the right moment. That said, lasting fame still seems to need something underneath it: the singers still standing a decade on can actually sing. So talent isn't required to become famous, but it does seem required to stay famous; the internet has simply made the first part close to random.

I think it is because fame looks like the fastest way to get everything else they want, like money, respect, and being chosen for things. My cousin Nam, who is sixteen, checks his follower count the way my parents' generation checked exam results, and I do not think he wants fame exactly, he wants proof that he matters. There is also a visibility problem, because young people see famous people every single day but almost never see ordinary successful people, so fame looks like the only kind of success that exists. It also looks easy from the outside, because nobody shows the years of failure, so it looks like something lucky that just happens to some people.

Some do, but it depends what they are famous for. My sister followed a Vietnamese Paralympic swimmer for years, and his story about training, setbacks, and refusing to be pitied really shaped how she deals with difficulty now. She also followed pop idols at the same time, but they mostly taught her about skincare. I think the problem is that fame usually depends on looks, luck, and charisma rather than character, so treating famous people as role models in general is a bit like a lottery. I would prefer young people to admire specific things famous people do, like their discipline or their craft, rather than admiring the whole person. Admire the work, not the person, is probably a safer rule.

Some do, but it depends on what they're famous for. My sister followed a Vietnamese Paralympic swimmer for years, and his story — the training, the setbacks, the refusal to be pitied — genuinely shaped how she handles difficulty. The problem is that fame selects for looks, luck and charisma rather than for character, so treating famous people as role models by default is a lottery. I think it is a reasonable expectation, but not a good rule. A few years ago, a well-known singer raised money for flood victims in central Vietnam, and she collected more money in one day than the local charity managed in a whole year, which shows what fame can achieve when it is used for something. So I understand why people expect famous people to help. But obligation is a very strong word. Famous people did not agree to a contract with society, many of them are famous just for singing, and forcing them to also be moral leaders often creates clumsy activism that feels fake. I would say they have a chance most of us do not have, and it is admirable when they take it, but it is also fine when they do not.
