A Difficult Decision You Made That Had a Very Good Result

Gần nhất ra thi tháng 5–8/2026

Đề bài (cue card)

Describe a difficult decision you made that had a very good result

You should say:

  • what the decision was
  • why it was difficult to make the decision
  • what helped you to decide
  • and explain why the decision you made had such a good result

Band 6.5

The 6.5 answer gives one clear reason for the difficulty ('living alone in Da Nang is more expensive') and one straightforward source of help (a conversation with a friend), staying factual and direct throughout, typical of Band 6.5.Câu trả lời band 6.5 đưa ra một lý do rõ ràng cho sự khó khăn ('sống một mình ở Đà Nẵng tốn kém hơn') và một nguồn giúp đỡ đơn giản (một cuộc trò chuyện với bạn), giữ tính sự kiện và trực tiếp xuyên suốt, đặc trưng của Band 6.5.

The difficult decision I want to talk about is deciding to move out and live alone, about two years ago. Before that, I was sharing an apartment with two other girls near Han Market, and it was cheaper, but also quite noisy and crowded.

It was a difficult decision because living alone in Da Nang is more expensive, and I was a little worried about being lonely, since I had never lived by myself before. My roommates were also good friends, so I felt a bit guilty about leaving them.

What helped me decide was a long conversation with my friend Hà over coffee. She had already lived alone for a year, and she told me honestly about both the good and bad sides, like having more peace but sometimes feeling quiet in the evenings. Hearing her real experience made me feel braver about trying it myself.

The result was actually very good. I found a small one-bedroom apartment near the Han River, and I really enjoy having my own space now. I can focus better on my design work at home, and I sleep better without noise. I still meet my old roommates regularly, so I didn't really lose the friendship, I just gained some peace and independence.

  • LRI felt a bit guilty"A bit guilty" softens a fairly complex social emotion (leaving friends she lived with) down to a single common adjective with a minimising hedge, rather than a more specific description like "torn" or "conflicted" that might better capture the mix of relief and loyalty at play. This simplicity keeps the emotional register light and conversational, but it also means the sentence doesn't fully convey the nuance the surrounding story suggests (weighing independence against friendship).
  • FCWhat helped me decide was a long conversation with my friend Hà over coffee. The cleft-like structure "what helped me decide was..." directly answers the cue-card question about what influenced the decision, naming the deciding factor in a single sentence before the following sentences unpack what was actually said in that conversation. This is efficient and on-topic but doesn't build suspense or reflection into the sentence itself — it simply states the fact and moves on, the minimal-development pattern the Band 6.5 fluency descriptor associates with "one clear reason is enough."Cấu trúc gần giống câu chẻ "what helped me decide was..." trả lời trực tiếp câu hỏi của cue card về điều gì đã ảnh hưởng đến quyết định, nêu tên yếu tố quyết định trong một câu duy nhất trước khi các câu tiếp theo giải thích chi tiết những gì thực sự đã được nói trong cuộc trò chuyện đó.
  • GRAsince I had never lived by myself beforeThis is a single reason clause introduced by "since," tacked onto the end of the main statement about being worried, adding one layer of subordination without any further nesting or a second linked idea. The past perfect "had never lived" is used correctly to mark that this was true before the point in time being discussed, a small but genuine piece of grammatical control. Overall, though, one subordinate clause per sentence is the ceiling of complexity the descriptor expects at Band 6.5, rather than the multiple linked clauses a 7.0+ answer might combine.Đây là một mệnh đề lý do duy nhất mở đầu bằng "since," được gắn thêm vào cuối phát biểu chính về sự lo lắng, thêm một lớp phụ thuộc mà không có bất kỳ sự lồng ghép thêm nào hay một ý liên kết thứ hai.
Band 7.0

The 7.0 answer develops the decision with a two-sided comparison (what I'd gain versus what I'd lose) and natural connectors like 'on top of that' and 'once I saw it written down', showing comfortable development without idiomatic flourish.Câu trả lời band 7.0 triển khai quyết định bằng một sự so sánh hai chiều (những gì tôi sẽ được so với những gì tôi sẽ mất) và các từ nối tự nhiên như 'thêm vào đó' và 'khi nhìn thấy nó được viết ra giấy', thể hiện sự triển khai thoải mái mà không phô trương thành ngữ.

The decision I'd like to talk about is turning down a job offer about two years ago. A fintech company in Ho Chi Minh City offered me a position as a senior product designer, and the salary was around forty percent higher than what I was earning at the small studio in Da Nang, where I still work now.

It was a difficult decision for a few reasons. The money was obviously tempting - that kind of jump doesn't happen often when you're still in your twenties. My parents were quietly delighted too, because to them, working for a big company in the biggest city is what success looks like. On top of that, I had this nagging worry that turning it down meant I wasn't ambitious enough, and that I'd end up designing small apps for local businesses while my old classmates moved ahead.

What helped me decide was going back to Hue for a weekend and doing something simple: writing two columns on a piece of paper. On one side, what I'd gain - more money, a bigger name on my CV. On the other side, what I'd lose - the beach every morning, being close to my grandmother, and a boss who lets me take charge of whole products instead of one screen of a huge app. Once I saw it written down, the second list was not only longer but full of things I couldn't easily get back later.

The result turned out better than I expected. Within a year, the studio put me in charge of our first app for a hospital chain, which is exactly the kind of responsibility I might have waited years for. My salary caught up more than I thought it would too, and I learned that I make much better decisions when I write them down instead of thinking them over in my head.

  • FCOnce I saw it written down, the second list was not only longerThis sentence marks the narrative's turning point — the moment the two-column exercise actually changed the speaker's thinking — using the time clause 'Once I saw it written down' to show the realisation was triggered by a concrete action, not vague reflection. A 6.5 answer would likely state the conclusion flatly ('The second list was longer, so I stayed'); a 7.5 answer might push the insight into an explicit trade-off statement. Left deliberately incomplete here (continuing into 'but full of things I couldn't easily get back later'), it gives the answer real narrative shape rather than a list of facts, the fuller development 7.0 rewards.Câu này đánh dấu bước ngoặt của câu chuyện — thời điểm bài tập liệt kê hai cột thực sự làm thay đổi suy nghĩ của người nói — bằng cách dùng mệnh đề thời gian 'Once I saw it written down' để cho thấy nhận thức ấy được kích hoạt bởi một hành động cụ thể, chứ không phải một sự suy ngẫm mơ hồ. Một bài Band 6.5 có khả năng sẽ nêu kết luận một cách bằng phẳng ('The second list was longer, so I stayed'); còn bài Band 7.5 có thể đẩy nhận thức này thành một phát biểu đánh đổi rõ ràng. Được cố tình để dang dở ở đây (tiếp nối bằng 'but full of things I couldn't easily get back later'), câu này mang lại cho câu trả lời một hình dạng tự sự thực sự thay vì chỉ là một danh sách sự kiện, đúng là sự phát triển đầy đủ hơn mà Band 7.0 đánh giá cao.
  • LRcaught up more than I thought it would'Caught up' is used in its extended, non-literal sense — money catching up to an alternative path — rather than its literal meaning, showing flexible reuse of an everyday verb instead of reaching for a technical term like 'matched.' A 6.5 answer would likely state this more plainly ('My salary became good too'); a 7.5 answer might use a more idiomatic financial phrase. This natural, slightly extended use of common vocabulary is exactly the 'few flexible or topic-specific' words the 7.0 descriptor asks for, resolving the salary-gap worry raised at the start of the answer.'Caught up' được dùng theo nghĩa mở rộng, phi nghĩa đen — tiền bạc bắt kịp một con đường khác — chứ không phải theo nghĩa đen của nó, thể hiện cách tái sử dụng linh hoạt một động từ hằng ngày thay vì tìm đến một thuật ngữ chuyên môn như 'matched.'
  • GRAand that I'd end up designing small apps for local businesses while my old classmates moved aheadA reported-speech 'that'-clause expressing the narrator's fear is combined with a contrastive 'while'-clause comparing two parallel futures — staying small versus classmates advancing — inside one accurate sentence. A 6.5 answer would likely state the same fear as two separate plain sentences; a 7.5 answer might additionally invert or front the contrast for effect. This mix of reported thought plus simultaneous contrast is comfortable complexity squarely at 7.0, capturing the specific status anxiety that made the decision genuinely difficult.Một mệnh đề tường thuật gián tiếp dùng 'that' diễn tả nỗi sợ của người kể chuyện được kết hợp với một mệnh đề đối lập dùng 'while' so sánh hai viễn cảnh tương lai song song — mãi nhỏ bé so với việc các bạn cùng lớp tiến xa hơn — trong một câu chính xác duy nhất.
Band 7.5

The 7.5 answer uses the precise phrase 'that kind of jump doesn't come along often' and a wider range of complex structures, including the closing reflection on how the writer makes decisions, marking it as genuine Band 7.5 language.Câu trả lời band 7.5 dùng cụm từ chính xác 'that kind of jump doesn't come along often' (loại bước nhảy vọt như vậy không phải lúc nào cũng xuất hiện) và một phạm vi cấu trúc phức đa dạng hơn, bao gồm cả phần suy ngẫm ở cuối về cách người viết đưa ra quyết định, đánh dấu đây là ngôn ngữ Band 7.5 đích thực.

The decision I'd talk about is turning down a job offer about two years ago. A fintech company in Ho Chi Minh City wanted me as a senior product designer, and the salary was roughly forty percent more than I was earning at the small studio in Da Nang where I still work today.

It was difficult for a few reasons. The money, obviously — that kind of jump doesn't come along often when you're in your twenties. My parents were quietly thrilled, because to them a big company in the biggest city is simply what success looks like. And I had this nagging fear that saying no meant I wasn't ambitious enough, that I'd be stuck designing small apps for local businesses while my classmates from Hanoi moved up.

What helped, honestly, was going home to Hue for a weekend and doing something very unglamorous: writing two columns on a piece of paper. On one side, what I'd gain — money, a bigger name on my CV. On the other, what I'd lose — the beach every morning, being two hours from my grandmother, and, crucially, a boss who let me own whole products rather than one screen of a giant app. Seeing it written down, the second column was longer and, more importantly, it was full of things I couldn't buy back later.

The result was better than I'd hoped. Within a year the studio put me in charge of our first app for a hospital chain, which is exactly the kind of responsibility I'd have waited five years for at the fintech. My salary caught up more than I expected too. But mostly I learnt that I make better decisions when I write them down and look at them in daylight.

  • LRthat kind of jump doesn't come along often"Come along" here is used idiomatically to mean "occur" or "present itself," a natural collocation about opportunities that a Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would more likely express literally ("opportunities like that are rare"). Referring to the pay rise abstractly as "that kind of jump" also avoids simply repeating "the raise" or "the salary increase," showing some lexical variation rather than word repetition. The phrase captures the pull of temptation -- a rare, tantalising chance -- that the rest of the paragraph goes on to weigh against personal costs."Come along" ở đây được dùng theo nghĩa thành ngữ, nghĩa là "xảy ra" hoặc "xuất hiện," một sự kết hợp từ tự nhiên về các cơ hội mà một câu trả lời Band 6.5 hoặc 7.0 nhiều khả năng sẽ diễn đạt theo nghĩa đen ("opportunities like that are rare").
  • GRASeeing it written down, the second column was longer and, more importantly, it was full of things I couldn't buy back later. The participial opening 'Seeing it written down' combined with an inserted comment clause shows the flexible, wider grammatical range expected at Band 7.5.Phần mở đầu bằng phân từ 'Seeing it written down' (khi nhìn thấy nó được viết ra) kết hợp với một mệnh đề bình luận chêm vào cho thấy phạm vi ngữ pháp linh hoạt, rộng hơn mà Band 7.5 yêu cầu.
  • FCI learnt that I make better decisions when I write them down and look at them in daylightRather than simply stating the outcome of the decision, the speaker draws a broader, generalisable lesson about their own decision-making process, moving from this one specific story to a claim about how they operate in general -- exactly the evaluative depth beyond narration that the 7.5 fluency descriptor asks for. A Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would more likely end by restating the result (the job at the studio worked out well) rather than reflecting on the method that produced it. The image "look at them in daylight" is also a light metaphor for clarity and honesty, giving the closing line a memorable, almost proverbial quality.

  1. 1. What difficulties might a society face if all decisions were made collectively?

    Band 6.5

This answer sticks to short, plain sentences joined by simple connectors like 'and' and 'so', giving one direct reason (speed) and one everyday example (the lobby colour) without any hedging or complex clause-building.Bài trả lời này bám sát các câu ngắn, đơn giản, nối bằng các từ nối cơ bản như 'and' và 'so', đưa ra một lý do trực tiếp (tốc độ) và một ví dụ đời thường (màu sảnh) mà không có từ đệm hay cách xây dựng mệnh đề phức tạp nào.

I think the biggest problem would be speed. In my building, the residents' group took eight months just to choose a colour for the lobby, and that was only two hundred households talking about paint. If a whole country tried to decide everything together, something urgent like a flood would take too long to deal with. Also, when everyone decides together, people often pick the safest choice, not the best one. So collective decisions are fair, but they are usually too slow for real problems.

    • FCAlso, when everyone decides together,The answer moves between ideas using the plain linking word 'Also' rather than a more natural spoken discourse marker. A band 7 answer would likely use something like 'to be fair' or 'honestly' to signal a shift in the argument, while a band 6.5 candidate relies on the most basic additive connector available.Bài trả lời chuyển giữa các ý bằng từ nối đơn giản 'Also' thay vì một từ đánh dấu diễn ngôn tự nhiên hơn, gần với văn nói.
    • LRthe safest choice, not the best oneThe vocabulary here is entirely common, everyday word choice ('safest', 'best') with no attempt at a less frequent word or collocation. A higher band answer would likely reach for something like 'drift toward the least offensive option' instead of the flatter 'safest choice, not the best one'.Từ vựng ở đây hoàn toàn là những lựa chọn từ thông thường, đời thường ('safest', 'best'), không có nỗ lực nào để dùng một từ hay cách kết hợp từ ít phổ biến hơn. Một bài trả lời band cao hơn có khả năng sẽ dùng thứ gì đó như 'drift toward the least offensive option' thay vì cụm bằng phẳng hơn 'safest choice, not the best one'.
    • GRAIf a whole country tried to decide everything together, something urgent like a flood would take too long to deal with. This is a single, complete conditional sentence with one clause per idea, which is grammatically accurate but structurally simple. A band 7.5 response would likely compress this into a fronted or participial construction rather than laying out the condition and result as two plainly joined clauses.Đây là một câu điều kiện hoàn chỉnh, đơn giản với mỗi ý một mệnh đề, đúng ngữ pháp nhưng cấu trúc đơn giản.
    Band 7.0

The natural spoken openers 'Honestly, I'd say' and 'To be fair' give this answer a reflective, conversational tone beyond the plain declarative style of a 6.5 response, while one sentence stacks two subordinate ideas together without reaching the fully compressed grammar of a 7.5 answer.Các cách mở đầu tự nhiên gần với văn nói 'Honestly, I'd say' và 'To be fair' mang lại cho bài trả lời này giọng điệu suy ngẫm, trò chuyện vượt xa phong cách trần thuật bằng phẳng của bài trả lời band 6.5, trong khi một câu chồng hai ý phụ thuộc lại với nhau mà chưa đạt tới ngữ pháp được nén hoàn toàn của bài trả lời band 7.5.

Honestly, I'd say speed would be the biggest casualty. My building's residents' group needed eight months to agree on a colour for the lobby, and that was just two hundred households discussing paint, so imagine a whole society trying to agree on something urgent like a flood response. To be fair, there's also a quality issue, because collective decisions tend to drift toward whatever offends the fewest people rather than the boldest option. And someone still has to frame the question in the first place, which means power doesn't really disappear, it just becomes less visible. Collective input is useful, but deciding everything together would be paralysis.

    • FCTo be fair, there's also a quality issueThe discourse marker 'To be fair' signals the speaker weighing a second point against the first, which is the kind of natural hedging typical of band 7 fluency. A 6.5 answer would more likely just say 'Also' or 'And', while a 7.5 answer might integrate the concession even more seamlessly into a single sentence.Từ đánh dấu diễn ngôn 'To be fair' báo hiệu người nói đang cân nhắc ý thứ hai so với ý đầu, đây là kiểu đệm tự nhiên điển hình của độ trôi chảy band 7. Bài trả lời band 6.5 có khả năng chỉ nói 'Also' hoặc 'And', trong khi bài trả lời band 7.5 có thể tích hợp sự nhượng bộ này liền mạch hơn nữa vào một câu duy nhất.
    • LRdrift toward whatever offends the fewest peopleThe collocation 'drift toward' is a step above basic vocabulary like 'choose' or 'pick', showing some range without being a genuinely rare word. A 6.5 candidate would likely just say 'people choose the safest option', while a 7.5 answer might reach for an even more precise or idiomatic phrase.Cách kết hợp từ 'drift toward' cao hơn một bậc so với từ vựng cơ bản như 'choose' hay 'pick', cho thấy một phạm vi nhất định mà chưa phải là một từ thực sự hiếm gặp. Thí sinh band 6.5 có khả năng chỉ nói 'people choose the safest option', trong khi bài trả lời band 7.5 có thể dùng một cụm từ chính xác hoặc tự nhiên hơn nữa.
    • GRAwhich means power doesn't really disappear, it just becomes less visibleThis clause is attached to the previous idea with 'which', building one moderately complex sentence out of two related thoughts, which goes beyond the short, separate sentences of a 6.5 answer. It stops short of the more compressed apposition or fronted structures a 7.5 response tends to use.Mệnh đề này được gắn vào ý trước bằng 'which', xây dựng một câu có độ phức tạp vừa phải từ hai ý liên quan, vượt xa các câu ngắn, riêng biệt của bài trả lời band 6.5. Nó chưa đạt tới cấu trúc đồng vị nén chặt hơn hoặc cấu trúc đảo mà bài trả lời band 7.5 có xu hướng dùng.
    Band 7.5

The fronted imperative-style clause 'Scale that up to an entire society, and...' and the dash-interrupted opener show the flexible, compressed grammar of a 7.5 answer, reinforced by the less common word 'litigated' used figuratively and the evaluative semicolon closing the response.Mệnh đề đảo kiểu mệnh lệnh 'Scale that up to an entire society, and...' và phần mở đầu bị dấu gạch ngang cắt ngang thể hiện ngữ pháp linh hoạt, nén chặt của bài trả lời band 7.5, được củng cố thêm bởi từ ít phổ biến 'litigated' dùng theo nghĩa bóng và dấu chấm phẩy mang tính đánh giá khép lại câu trả lời.

Speed, I'd wager, would be the first casualty — my building's residents' group took a full eight months just to settle on a lobby colour, and that was two hundred households weighing in on paint. Scale that up to an entire society, and time-sensitive crises like floods or epidemics would be litigated into irrelevance before anyone acted. There's a subtler quality problem too: collective decisions tend to gravitate toward whatever offends the fewest people, which is rarely the boldest or wisest option. And someone still has to frame the question being voted on, so power never actually vanishes, it simply goes underground. Collective input, in moderation, sharpens decisions; collective decision-making on everything would be outright paralysis.

Written in short, plain sentences linked with 'but' and 'so', this answer gives a direct opinion, one concrete example (Ms Phương), and a simple reason, without any hedging language.Được viết bằng những câu ngắn, đơn giản, nối bằng 'but' và 'so', bài trả lời này đưa ra một quan điểm trực tiếp, một ví dụ cụ thể (cô Phương), và một lý do đơn giản, không có ngôn ngữ đệm nào.

I think the best people are those who know the teenager well but are not too close, like parents. For me, it was my art teacher in Hue, Ms Phương. My parents wanted me to study medicine, but she noticed I always drew phone designs at lunchtime, and she told me there were degrees for that. Teachers, cousins or coaches can see things clearly because they don't need the teenager to become anything special. Parents are important too, but they often want too much, so they give advice that is not always helpful.

I think the main decision is how open a country should be to money, people and ideas from outside. In Da Nang, foreign hotels have brought more jobs and made the city nicer, but prices went up and now local people cannot always use the beaches. So societies will need to decide how much of this they want. Climate change is another big decision, because no country can fix it alone. Technology is also important, because global companies now decide how people communicate. These are not easy questions, so many countries will probably try to avoid deciding.

So societies will have to work out how much of that trade-off they're willing to accept. The main benefit is that decisions fit the place better. In the lane behind my parents' house in Hue, residents were asked where to put new street lights and speed bumps, and they chose spots the city planners would never have picked, like the dark corner where motorbikes cut through. It worked well because the people who use the street every day designed it. It also makes people feel more responsible, so they do not damage things they helped to choose. The only problem is that it takes more time, but for small local matters, that is okay.

Mainly, it's that the decisions end up genuinely fitting the place, rather than following some plan drawn up far away. In the lane behind my parents' house in Hue, residents were asked where the new street lights and speed bumps should go, and they chose spots the city planners would never have picked — the dark corner where motorbikes cut through, the stretch where kids play. It works precisely because the people using it daily designed it. Involvement also breeds ownership, since nobody vandalises something they fought to have included, and it teaches communities that institutions are actually listening, which makes them far more willing to cooperate next time round. Slower, undeniably, but for local matters that's a small price worth paying.

  5. 5. How far does advertising influence people's everyday decisions?

    So sánh Band 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 cho câu hỏi này
    Band 6.5

Plain sentences with the basic connectors 'but' and 'so' present a direct claim, a personal example, and a simple contrast between big and small decisions, all in everyday vocabulary.

I think advertising has more influence than most people admit, especially on small everyday decisions. I used to think I ignored ads completely, but then I noticed I had bought the exact coffee brand that kept appearing in the Grab app. Advertising does not really change what we want, but it changes which brand we choose. For big decisions, like buying a house or choosing a job, advertising has less effect because people research more and ask other people. But small choices happen quickly, without much thinking, so advertising works well on them.

I'd have sworn I ignore ads completely, right up until I caught myself buying the exact coffee brand that had been trailing me around the Grab app for a week. Advertising rarely reshapes what we want; it just quietly decides which version of it we reach for. I spent three evenings reading reviews before buying a new monitor for work, and the hard part was not reading, it was finding out which reviews were honest. Too much information usually makes decisions slower, but it does not really make them better after a certain point. I think other young people have a very strong influence, especially on things other people can see. My cousin Nam is sixteen, and he stopped playing football, which he was good at, because his friends started skateboarding instead, and within a month he had changed completely. At that age, belonging to a group feels very important, so friends influence clothes, music, hobbies, and sometimes riskier things more than parents do. Parents are still more important for big decisions like university, because friends usually do not know much more than the teenager does. I think parents should try to make sure their child has good friends, instead of fighting against their influence.

The reflective opener 'Honestly, I'd say' and the dash-set aside show more natural spoken structure than a 6.5 answer's plain statements, while the phrase 'belonging feels almost like survival' adds a touch of figurative vocabulary.Cách mở đầu suy ngẫm 'Honestly, I'd say' và ý chêm tách bằng dấu gạch ngang thể hiện cấu trúc tự nhiên hơn, gần với văn nói hơn so với các câu phát biểu đơn giản của bài trả lời band 6.5, trong khi cụm 'belonging feels almost like survival' thêm một chút từ vựng giàu hình ảnh.

Honestly, I'd say it's enormous, especially on anything visible. My cousin Nam, who's sixteen, gave up football — a sport he was genuinely good at — because his group of friends got into skateboarding, and within a month his whole identity had shifted along with them. At that age, belonging feels almost like survival, so peer influence tends to beat parental influence on clothes, music, hobbies and, worryingly, riskier things too. Where parents still win out is on longer-term decisions like university, mostly because friends have no more idea than the teenager does. I think the healthiest thing adults can do is make sure the peer group is a good one, rather than trying to fight its influence directly.

    • FCWhere parents still win out is on longer-term decisions like universityThis fronted structure signals a shift to the counter-point in a slightly more sophisticated way than simply starting a new sentence with 'But'. A 6.5 answer would more likely just say 'Parents are still more important for big decisions like university' as a plain, separate statement.Cấu trúc đảo này báo hiệu sự chuyển sang ý phản biện theo cách tinh tế hơn một chút so với việc chỉ bắt đầu một câu mới bằng 'But'. Bài trả lời band 6.5 có khả năng chỉ nói 'Parents are still more important for big decisions like university' như một câu phát biểu bằng phẳng, riêng biệt.
    • LRbelonging feels almost like survivalThis is a moderately vivid, figurative comparison rather than plain description, showing some lexical reach beyond basic vocabulary. It's less startling than a genuinely rare word but goes further than the flat 'belonging to a group feels very important' a 6.5 answer uses.Đây là một phép so sánh giàu hình ảnh vừa phải thay vì mô tả đơn thuần, cho thấy một tầm với từ vựng nhất định vượt ngoài từ vựng cơ bản. Nó không gây bất ngờ bằng một từ thực sự hiếm nhưng đi xa hơn cụm bằng phẳng 'belonging to a group feels very important' mà bài trả lời band 6.5 dùng.
    • GRAMy cousin Nam, who's sixteen, gave up football — a sport he was genuinely good at — because his group of friends got into skateboarding, and within a month his whole identity had shifted along with them. The dash-set aside inserts extra information about the football skill without starting a new clause, showing more flexible sentence-building than a 6.5 answer's chain of clauses. It stops short of folding the biographical detail directly into an apposition the way a 7.5 answer does.Ý chêm tách bằng dấu gạch ngang chèn thêm thông tin về kỹ năng bóng đá mà không bắt đầu một mệnh đề mới, thể hiện cách xây dựng câu linh hoạt hơn chuỗi mệnh đề của bài trả lời band 6.5. Nó chưa gấp chi tiết tiểu sử trực tiếp vào một đồng vị theo cách mà bài trả lời band 7.5 làm.
    Band 7.5

The compact apposition 'sixteen and genuinely talented at football' and the vivid participial phrase 'his whole identity reshuffling itself' replace a full extra clause with compressed grammar, while 'eclipse' and 'hold sway' offer genuinely less common vocabulary for influence.Đồng vị cô đọng 'sixteen and genuinely talented at football' và cụm phân từ sống động 'his whole identity reshuffling itself' thay thế một mệnh đề bổ sung đầy đủ bằng ngữ pháp nén chặt, trong khi 'eclipse' và 'hold sway' cung cấp từ vựng thực sự ít phổ biến hơn cho khái niệm ảnh hưởng.

Enormous, I'd say, especially on anything visible. My cousin Nam, sixteen and genuinely talented at football, dropped the sport within a month of his friend group discovering skateboarding, his whole identity reshuffling itself to match theirs almost overnight. At that age, belonging feels like survival, so peer influence tends to eclipse parental influence on clothes, music, hobbies and, worryingly, riskier behaviour too. Where parents still hold sway is on long-horizon decisions like university, largely because friends know no more about that than the teenager does. The healthiest move adults can make, I think, is curating a good peer group rather than fighting its pull head-on.

• FCThe healthiest move adults can make, I think, is curating a good peer group rather than fighting its pull head-on.This closing sentence delivers a considered, generalised recommendation with the aside 'I think' folded naturally into the middle of the clause rather than tacked onto the front. A 6.5 or 7.0 answer would more likely place 'I think' at the very start as a simple, separate opener.Câu kết này đưa ra một khuyến nghị khái quát, đã được cân nhắc kỹ, với câu chêm 'I think' được gấp tự nhiên vào giữa mệnh đề thay vì gắn vào đầu.
    • LRpeer influence tends to eclipse parental influence'Eclipse' is a genuinely less common, vivid word for describing one influence overtaking another, well beyond the plain 'beat' or 'is stronger than' that a lower band would default to. It's a precise, slightly literary choice that fits the abstract comparison being made.'Eclipse' là một từ thực sự ít phổ biến, sống động để mô tả một ảnh hưởng lấn át một ảnh hưởng khác, vượt xa 'beat' hay 'is stronger than' đơn giản mà band thấp sẽ mặc định dùng.
    • GRAhis whole identity reshuffling itself to match theirs almost overnightThis participial phrase attaches directly to the previous clause without a connecting word, compressing what a lower band would likely express as a separate sentence with 'and'. This kind of absolute/participial construction is a hallmark of the flexible grammar expected at 7.5.Cụm phân từ này gắn trực tiếp vào mệnh đề trước mà không cần từ nối, nén lại điều mà band thấp có khả năng sẽ diễn đạt thành một câu riêng với 'and'. This answer lists points with the plain connectors 'but' and 'or' and states each idea as its own short sentence, using everyday vocabulary such as 'hardest one' and 'take a loan'.Bài trả lời này liệt kê các điểm bằng từ nối đơn giản 'but' và 'or' và nêu mỗi ý thành một câu ngắn riêng, dùng từ vựng đời thường như 'hardest one' và 'take a loan'.

The classic decisions are still there, like what to study, which job to choose, and whether to stay or move away. But I think the hardest one now is about location. Some of my friends are deciding whether to work abroad, in Japan or Australia, or stay in Vietnam near their family, and our parents did not usually have this choice. Young people also have to decide things earlier now, like what to share online, because it stays there forever, or whether to take a loan for education. There is also a quieter decision about what kind of adult to become, which used to be decided by the community but is now left to each person.

    • FCBut I think the hardest one now is about location. This shift to the main point is made with the basic connector 'But' at the start of a fresh, short sentence. A band 7 answer would more likely weave the same shift into a longer sentence with a marker like 'honestly, I think', showing smoother idea progression.Sự chuyển hướng sang ý chính này được tạo bằng từ nối cơ bản 'But' ở đầu một câu mới, ngắn.
    • LRbecause it stays there foreverThis is simple, literal phrasing. A higher band answer would likely use a more precise or slightly abstract word here, such as 'permanent', instead of the plainer 'stays there forever'.Đây là cách diễn đạt đơn giản, theo nghĩa đen.
    • GRASome of my friends are deciding whether to work abroad, in Japan or Australia, or stay in Vietnam near their family, and our parents did not usually have this choice. This sentence joins the example and the contrast with 'and', a straightforward additive structure. A 7.5 answer would likely turn the second half into an appositive noun phrase instead, avoiding the extra 'and' clause.Câu này nối ví dụ và sự đối lập bằng 'and', một cấu trúc bổ sung trực diện.

Several of my friends are currently deciding whether to work abroad, in Japan or Australia, or stay in Vietnam near family, which is a decision our parents' generation mostly never had to make. On top of that, young people now have to decide things earlier, like what to share online, which becomes permanent, or whether to take on debt for education. • FCOn top of that, young people now have to decide things earlierThis phrase signals the addition of a new category of point in a more natural, spoken way than a bare 'Also' or 'And'. A 6.5 answer would more likely just start the next sentence with 'Young people also have to decide things earlier now'.Cụm từ này báo hiệu việc thêm một nhóm điểm mới theo cách tự nhiên, gần với văn nói hơn so với 'Also' hay 'And' trơn. Bài trả lời band 6.5 có khả năng chỉ bắt đầu câu tiếp theo bằng 'Young people also have to decide things earlier now'.
    • LRour parents' generation mostly never had to makeReferring to 'our parents' generation' rather than simply 'our parents' shows a slightly more precise, sociological way of framing the comparison. It is a modest step up in register from the plainer phrasing a 6.5 answer tends to use.
    • GRAwhich is a decision our parents' generation mostly never had to makeThis relative clause attaches an evaluative comment directly onto the previous statement without starting a new sentence, showing more complex sentence-building than the short, separate sentences of a 6.5 response. It is not yet as compressed as the appositive noun phrase a 7.5 answer would use for the same idea.Mệnh đề quan hệ này gắn một bình luận mang tính đánh giá trực tiếp vào phát biểu trước đó mà không bắt đầu một câu mới, thể hiện cách xây dựng câu phức tạp hơn các câu ngắn, riêng biệt của bài trả lời band 6.5. Several of my friends are currently weighing up working abroad, in Japan or Australia, against staying in Vietnam near family, a choice our parents' generation mostly never had to face. Alongside that, young people now settle things earlier than they used to: what to share online, which becomes essentially permanent, and whether to take on debt for an education. Yes, but the decisions need to match the child's age. My sister Vy started choosing her own clothes at four years old, and the outfits were often strange, but I think that is why she is so confident now, because she was trusted to decide something every day. Children who never get to choose anything will have to make big decisions at eighteen with no practice. So the decisions should be small, like what to wear, which book to read, or how to spend pocket money. But letting a six-year-old decide whether to go to school is not respect, it is just not doing your job as a parent. Still, some real choice every day is necessary.
