IELTS Speaking Part 2

A City That You Really Enjoyed Visiting

Gần nhất ra thi tháng 5–8/2026

Đề bài (cue card)

Describe a city that you really enjoyed visiting

You should say:

  • Where the city is
  • What you did in this city
  • How much time you spent there
  • And explain why you really enjoyed visiting this city

Band 6.5

Simple, high-frequency adjectives in a list ('quieter, older, and more colourful') and a basic even-though/because sentence keep the description clear but linguistically plain, typical Band 6.5.Danh sách các tính từ đơn giản, tần suất cao ('quieter, older, and more colourful') cùng một câu 'even though/because' cơ bản giữ cho phần miêu tả rõ ràng nhưng đơn giản về mặt ngôn ngữ, điển hình cho Band 6.5.

The city I want to talk about is Hoi An, which is an old town about thirty minutes from Da Nang, where I live. I went there earlier this year with my friend Trang, and we spent just one weekend there, two days and one night, because it's so close to home.

We mostly walked around the ancient town, looking at the old yellow houses and the small shops selling lanterns and clothes. In the evening, we bought paper lanterns and put them on the river, which is something a lot of visitors do there. We also ate a lot, especially cao lầu, which is a noodle dish you can only really find in Hoi An, and we tried on some clothes at the tailor shops, although we didn't buy anything in the end.

Even though we only spent two days there, it felt like enough time to enjoy the city properly, because it isn't very big.

I really enjoyed visiting Hoi An because it feels completely different from Da Nang, even though it's so close. It's quieter, older, and more colourful, especially at night when all the lanterns are lit up. Walking around with Trang, just talking and taking photos, was really relaxing, and it made me forget about work completely for a whole weekend.

Tôi thực sự rất thích Hội An vì nơi đó mang cảm giác hoàn toàn khác so với Đà Nẵng, dù khoảng cách rất gần.

  • LRIt's quieter, older, and more colourfulThis is a three-item adjective list — "quieter, older, and more colourful" — all high-frequency comparative adjectives with no attempt at more specific or vivid vocabulary. That flat but accurate listing is exactly the 6.5 ceiling: a 7.0 answer would likely reach for one more specific word here (e.g. "atmospheric" or "lantern-lit"), while a genuinely lower-band speaker might drop the comparative "-er" forms altogether. In context, this is the candidate's payoff line for why Hoi An felt different from Da Nang, so the plainness of the language sits right against the sophistication of the observation.Đây là một danh sách ba tính từ — 'quieter, older, and more colourful' — toàn bộ đều là những tính từ so sánh tần suất cao, không hề cố gắng dùng vốn từ cụ thể hoặc sinh động hơn.
  • GRAEven though we only spent two days there, it felt like enough time to enjoy the city properly, because it isn't very big. This sentence stacks two subordinate clauses — a concession ("Even though...") and a reason ("because...") — onto one main clause, which is the kind of controlled complex-sentence building that separates 6.5 from a lower band, but the two clauses are simply added rather than nested or varied, with no relative clause layered in. A 7.0 answer would likely vary the connector or embed one clause inside the other, while a genuine 6.0 speaker might instead produce two separate simple sentences. It's accurate and does real work justifying the short stay, but it's the only structural trick used, which is characteristic of a 6.5 answer that plays it safe.Câu này chồng hai mệnh đề phụ thuộc — một mệnh đề nhượng bộ ('Even though...') và một mệnh đề lý do ('because...')
  • FCit made me forget about work completely for a whole weekend. This closing line directly answers "why you enjoyed it" with a single, concrete consequence — forgetting about work — rather than pausing to reflect on what that break meant or drawing a wider conclusion. At 6.5, one clear reason delivered plainly is sufficient for coherence, whereas a 7.5 answer would likely turn this into an evaluative aside about what the weekend revealed about work-life balance. Given that the whole answer builds toward this payoff about relaxing with Trang, ending on a flat factual statement rather than a reflective one keeps the fluency solid but unremarkable, exactly the 6.5 target.Câu kết này trả lời trực tiếp câu hỏi 'vì sao bạn thích chuyến đi đó' bằng một hệ quả cụ thể, đơn lẻ — quên đi công việc — thay vì dừng lại để suy ngẫm về ý nghĩa của kỳ nghỉ đó hay rút ra một kết luận rộng hơn.
Band 7.0

A short evaluative contrast about the streets feeling 'normal, everyday Hue rather than a place built purely for visitors' shows the reasoned development and comfortable complex grammar expected at Band 7.0.Một sự đối lập mang tính đánh giá ngắn gọn về việc những con phố mang cảm giác 'bình dị, đời thường của Huế chứ không phải một nơi được xây riêng cho du khách' cho thấy sự phát triển ý có lý lẽ và ngữ pháp phức tự nhiên như mong đợi ở Band 7.0.

The city I'd like to talk about is Hue, the old imperial capital, which is about two and a half hours north of Da Nang by car. I went there last winter with two colleagues from work, and we ended up spending three days there, which felt just about right.

While we were there, we visited the Imperial City and a couple of the royal tombs outside town, which I found surprisingly peaceful compared to how busy I expected them to be. We also took a boat trip along the Perfume River one evening, which was probably my favourite part of the whole trip. Food-wise, we tried a lot of the local specialities, like bún bò Huế and these small savoury cakes that Hue is famous for, and honestly I think I ate better there than I have anywhere else in Vietnam.

Three days was enough to see the main sights without rushing too much, though I do feel like there's more of the city I'd like to explore if I went back.

I really enjoyed visiting Hue because it has a completely different atmosphere from Da Nang. It's calmer, a bit more traditional, and there's a real sense of history in the architecture that you don't get in a newer coastal city. I also liked that it wasn't overly touristy — a lot of the streets still felt like normal, everyday Hue rather than a place built purely for visitors. Walking around the citadel at sunset with my colleagues, just talking and taking it all in, is a memory I still think back on fairly often.

  • FCit wasn't overly touristy — a lot of the streets still felt like normal, everyday Hue rather than a place built purely for visitorsThe dash introduces an elaboration that explicitly contrasts two states -- "normal, everyday Hue" versus "a place built purely for visitors" -- moving from a simple evaluative claim ("wasn't overly touristy") to the specific observation that supports it. This reason-then-evidence structure within one sentence is the coherent development the Band 7.0 fluency and coherence target rewards, going a step beyond just listing what was visited.Dấu gạch ngang dẫn vào một phần diễn giải tương phản rõ ràng hai trạng thái -- "normal, everyday Hue" so với "a place built purely for visitors" -- chuyển từ một nhận định đánh giá đơn giản ("wasn't overly touristy") sang quan sát cụ thể hỗ trợ cho nó.
  • LRrather than a place built purely for visitors"A place built purely for visitors" is a topic-specific descriptive phrase that precisely names the contrast being drawn, rather than a plainer word like "touristy" repeated, or a more idiomatic phrase like "a tourist trap" that a Band 7.5 answer might reach for.
  • GRAWalking around the citadel at sunset with my colleagues, just talking and taking it all in, is a memory I still think back on fairly often.A fronted participial phrase ("Walking around the citadel at sunset...") functions as the sentence's subject, further elaborated by an embedded phrase ("just talking and taking it all in") before the main verb "is" finally arrives, and the sentence closes with a relative clause ("that I still think back on"). This is an ambitious but accurate structure for Band 7.0, using participial subject fronting -- more typically a 7.5-level feature -- though without the additional idiomatic or figurative layering that would confirm a full 7.5 ceiling elsewhere in the answer.Một cụm phân từ được đặt trước ("Walking around the citadel at sunset...") đóng vai trò chủ ngữ của câu, được diễn giải thêm bằng một cụm từ lồng bên trong ("just talking and taking it all in") trước khi động từ chính "is" cuối cùng xuất hiện, và câu văn khép lại bằng một mệnh đề quan hệ ("that I still think back on").
Band 7.5

Personifying the city ('Da Lat is a city that doesn't seem to be in a hurry to be anything') and the vivid physical image of shoulders dropping 'two centimetres' reflect confident, idiomatic Band 7.5 language.Việc nhân cách hóa thành phố ('Đà Lạt là một thành phố dường như chẳng vội trở thành bất cứ điều gì') cùng với hình ảnh sống động về đôi vai 'chùng xuống hai xăng-ti-mét' phản ánh ngôn ngữ tự tin, mang tính thành ngữ của Band 7.5.

The city I'd pick is Da Lat, up in the Central Highlands. I went there last April with my younger sister Vy, who was on a break from university in Ho Chi Minh City, and we spent four days there — which sounds like a lot for a small city, but honestly it wasn't enough.

The first thing you notice is the temperature. Coming from Da Nang, where April already feels like standing next to an oven, stepping off the bus into fourteen degrees and mist was almost funny. We'd get up early and walk around Xuân Hương lake before the traffic started, buy hot soy milk from a lady with a cart, and then just sit on a bench feeling smug about how well we'd chosen. We rented a scooter and drove out to the pine forests and a strawberry farm, and in the evenings we ate far too much at the night market — grilled rice paper, the sweet potato cakes, everything.

What made it special, I think, was the pace. Da Lat is a city that doesn't seem to be in a hurry to be anything. The houses are these slightly faded French villas, the coffee shops are half hidden in gardens, and nobody honks. For someone whose job involves staring at a screen and worrying about pixels, it was like my shoulders dropped two centimetres for four days.

And being there with Vy mattered too. We don't get much time together now that she's studying in another city, so those long, slow days were as much about that as about the place.

  • LRDa Lat is a city that doesn't seem to be in a hurry to be anything. This sentence personifies the city, giving it the human quality of not being "in a hurry," which is a genuinely idiomatic, figurative way of capturing atmosphere rather than a literal description like "Da Lat is a quiet, slow-paced city." The 7.5 tier's descriptor for "one figurative or idiomatic touch if it fits the moment" is a good match here because the personification lands naturally as a thesis statement for the paragraph that follows, rather than as an isolated flourish. A 7.0 answer would more likely state the pace directly and plainly, without reaching for personification.Câu này nhân cách hóa thành phố, gán cho nó phẩm chất con người là không "in a hurry," đây là một cách thực sự mang tính thành ngữ, giàu hình ảnh để nắm bắt không khí thay vì một mô tả theo nghĩa đen như "Da Lat is a quiet, slow-paced city."
  • GRAstepping off the bus into fourteen degrees and mist was almost funnyThe -ing clause "stepping off the bus into fourteen degrees and mist" functions as the grammatical subject of the sentence, a less common and more literary structure than the safer "When I stepped off the bus... it was almost funny" a 7.0 answer would likely default to. Using a gerund-phrase subject accurately here is exactly the "flexible, less-common structure handled accurately" the 7.5 tier rewards under Grammatical Range. It also compresses the sensory contrast, leaving the heat of Da Nang for cold, misty Da Lat, into one fluid sentence rather than spreading it across two.Mệnh đề -ing "stepping off the bus into fourteen degrees and mist" đóng vai trò chủ ngữ ngữ pháp của câu, một cấu trúc ít phổ biến hơn và mang tính văn chương hơn so với cách nói an toàn hơn "When I stepped off the bus... it was almost funny" mà một câu trả lời band 7.0 nhiều khả năng sẽ mặc định dùng.
  • FCit was like my shoulders dropped two centimetres for four daysRather than simply stating that the trip was relaxing, the speaker converts the feeling into a specific, slightly exaggerated physical image ("shoulders dropped two centimetres"), which evaluates the effect of the trip rather than just describing what happened. This kind of vivid, reflective figuring of an emotional state is the "clear reflective or evaluative point" the 7.5 tier expects beyond plain description; a 7.0 answer would more likely settle for a flatter claim like "I felt really relaxed there." The specificity of "two centimetres" also makes the exaggeration read as playful rather than clichéd, which supports natural delivery. I felt really relaxed there." Sự cụ thể của "two centimetres" cũng khiến sự phóng đại đọc lên có vẻ dí dỏm thay vì sáo rỗng, hỗ trợ cho lối trình bày tự nhiên.

  1. 1. Why do tourists choose to visit certain cities?

    tháng 5–8/2026
    So sánh Band 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 cho câu hỏi này
    Band 6.5

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain closing summary 'But usually, people choose a city because of one clear reason', which simply restates the opening idea.Đây là câu trả lời 6.5 vì phần tổng kết cuối đơn thuần “But usually, people choose a city because of one clear reason” chỉ đơn giản nhắc lại ý mở đầu.

I think tourists usually choose a city because it is famous for one thing. For example, Hoi An, near where I live, is famous for its lantern-lit old town, and this image brings most of the tourists there. Other things matter too, like how easy and cheap it is to travel there, and whether it looks good on social media. It is interesting that people often talk about something different after their trip, like the food, even if they came for the lanterns. But usually, people choose a city because of one clear reason.

    • FCBut usually, people choose a city because of one clear reason. This closing sentence repeats the opening claim almost word for word, using the basic connector 'But', with no new insight added. A 7.0 answer would restate this with the more confident 'honestly, the initial choice is nearly always driven by one strong, simple association', and a 7.5 answer would compress the idea into an even tighter closing phrase.Câu kết này lặp lại nhận định mở đầu gần như nguyên văn, dùng liên từ cơ bản “But”, không thêm hiểu biết mới nào. Một câu trả lời 7.0 sẽ diễn đạt lại điều này bằng cách tự tin hơn “honestly, the initial choice is nearly always driven by one strong, simple association”, và một câu trả lời 7.5 sẽ nén ý này thành một cụm kết thúc chặt chẽ hơn nữa.
    • LRfamous for one thingThis is a plain, generic phrase describing the city's appeal, without any more vivid or specific wording. A 7.0 answer would restate this as 'a good example' of a city with 'one strong, simple association', and a 7.5 answer would use the more vivid phrase 'owns one image'.Đây là một cụm đơn giản, chung chung mô tả sức hút của thành phố, không có câu chữ sống động hoặc cụ thể hơn nào.
    • GRAthis image brings most of the tourists thereThis is a short, simple active sentence in plain subject-verb-object order. A 7.0 answer would extend this into a longer sentence using 'basically carries the whole tourism industry there', and a 7.5 answer would use the more vivid metaphor 'carries the entire tourism industry on its back'.Đây là một câu chủ động ngắn, đơn giản theo trật tự chủ ngữ-động từ-tân ngữ bình thường. Một câu trả lời 7.0 sẽ mở rộng nó thành một câu dài hơn bằng “basically carries the whole tourism industry there”, và một câu trả lời 7.5 sẽ dùng phép ẩn dụ sống động hơn “carries the entire tourism industry on its back”.
    Band 7.0

This is a 7.0 answer because of the reflective observation 'What's interesting is that the reasons people give afterwards are often different', which adds a genuine layer of nuance before the closing statement.Đây là câu trả lời 7.0 vì có nhận xét mang tính suy ngẫm “What's interesting is that the reasons people give afterwards are often different”, thêm vào một tầng sắc thái thực sự trước phát biểu kết thúc.

Usually because the city has one thing it's known for that they can picture before they arrive, I'd say. Hoi An, just down the road from me, is a good example, everyone comes for the lantern-lit old town, and that single image basically carries the whole tourism industry there. Practical factors matter too, how easy it is to get to, whether it's affordable, and increasingly whether it photographs well on social media. What's interesting is that the reasons people give afterwards are often different, they came for the lanterns and left talking about the food. But honestly, the initial choice is nearly always driven by one strong, simple association.

    • FCWhat's interesting is that the reasons people give afterwards are often differentThis sentence uses a cleft construction ('What's interesting is that...') to highlight an observation, a more reflective move than simply stating the fact plainly. A 6.5 answer would state this more flatly as 'It is interesting that people often talk about something different after their trip', and a 7.5 answer would rephrase this as 'What's genuinely interesting is how the story shifts afterwards'.Câu này dùng cấu trúc nhấn mạnh (“What's interesting is that...”) Một câu trả lời 6.5 sẽ nêu điều này phẳng hơn là “It is interesting that people often talk about something different after their trip”, và một câu trả lời 7.5 sẽ diễn đạt lại thành “What's genuinely interesting is how the story shifts afterwards”.
    • LRcarries the whole tourism industry thereThis phrase personifies the city's image as something that 'carries' an entire industry, a more vivid collocation than the plain 'brings most of the tourists there' used at 6.5.Cụm này nhân cách hóa hình ảnh của thành phố như thứ “carries” cả một ngành công nghiệp, một cách kết hợp từ sống động hơn so với “brings most of the tourists there” đơn giản được dùng ở 6.5.
    • GRAeveryone comes for the lantern-lit old town, and that single image basically carries the whole tourism industry thereThis sentence coordinates two clauses with 'and', the second one built around a vivid personifying verb, showing more developed sentence construction than the plain version at 6.5. A 6.5 answer would state these as two separate shorter sentences.Câu này phối hợp hai mệnh đề bằng “and”, mệnh đề thứ hai xây dựng quanh một động từ nhân cách hóa sống động, cho thấy cách xây dựng câu phát triển hơn so với phiên bản đơn giản ở 6.5.
    Band 7.5

This reaches 7.5 through the vivid metaphor 'carries the entire tourism industry on its back' and the parallel participial contrast 'arrive chasing lanterns and leave raving about the food instead'.Câu trả lời này đạt 7.5 nhờ phép ẩn dụ sống động “carries the entire tourism industry on its back” và sự tương phản phân từ song song “arrive chasing lanterns and leave raving about the food instead”.

Usually because a city owns one image people can picture long before they ever arrive. Hoi An, just down the road from me, is the textbook case, everyone comes for the lantern-lit old town, and that single postcard shot carries the entire tourism industry on its back. Practical factors weigh in too, ease of access, affordability, and increasingly how well a place photographs for social media. What's genuinely interesting is how the story shifts afterwards, visitors arrive chasing lanterns and leave raving about the food instead. But the initial pull, almost without exception, comes down to one strong, uncomplicated association.

    • FCWhat's genuinely interesting is how the story shifts afterwardsThis sentence adds the intensifying adverb 'genuinely' and the more abstract noun 'the story' to sharpen the observation beyond the 7.0 version's plainer wording. A 6.5 answer states this idea with no such reflective framing device at all.Câu này thêm phó từ nhấn mạnh “genuinely” và danh từ trừu tượng hơn “the story” để làm sắc nét nhận xét vượt qua câu chữ đơn giản hơn của phiên bản 7.0. • GRAvisitors arrive chasing lanterns and leave raving about the food insteadThis sentence uses two parallel participial phrases ('chasing lanterns', 'raving about the food') attached to contrasting verbs ('arrive', 'leave'), a compact and flexible structure. A 7.0 answer would use the plainer finite clause 'they came for the lanterns and left talking about the food', and a 6.5 answer would state this even more simply.Câu này dùng hai cụm phân từ song song (“chasing lanterns”, “raving about the food”) gắn với các động từ tương phản (“arrive”, “leave”), một cấu trúc gọn gàng, linh hoạt. Một câu trả lời 7.0 sẽ dùng mệnh đề chia đơn giản hơn “they came for the lanterns and left talking about the food”, và một câu trả lời 6.5 sẽ nêu điều này còn đơn giản hơn nữa.

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain comparison and the simple closing conditional sentence 'But if I could only travel once a year, I would choose a place with history'.Đây là câu trả lời 6.5 vì phép so sánh đơn thuần và câu điều kiện kết thúc đơn giản “But if I could only travel once a year, I would choose a place with history”.

I think historical cities are usually more interesting for tourists, though it depends on what you like. I spent a weekend in Singapore once, and I found it nice but easy to forget, because glass towers look similar everywhere. But walking around the old citadel in Hue, my hometown, feels different because it could not be anywhere else. Historical cities give you something unique, which is what travel is usually about. Some people still like modern cities for shopping or nightlife, and they are often more comfortable. But if I could only travel once a year, I would choose a place with history.

    • FCBut if I could only travel once a year, I would choose a place with history. This closing sentence uses a plain second conditional structure in a straightforward way, with no added emphasis. A 7.0 answer would restate this with 'if I only had one trip a year, honestly, I'd choose the place with a story', adding a spoken hedge and a more vivid noun, and a 7.5 answer would use the intensifier 'every time' at the end.Câu kết này dùng cấu trúc điều kiện loại hai đơn giản theo cách trực tiếp, không thêm nhấn mạnh gì. Một câu trả lời 7.0 sẽ diễn đạt lại bằng “if I only had one trip a year, honestly, I'd choose the place with a story”, thêm một cách rào đón khi nói và một danh từ sống động hơn, và một câu trả lời 7.5 sẽ dùng từ nhấn mạnh “every time” ở cuối.
    • LReasy to forgetThis is a plain, literal adjective phrase describing the impression Singapore left. A 7.0 answer would use the more natural 'oddly forgettable', and a 7.5 answer would compress this into 'strangely unable to recall much of it afterwards'.Đây là một cụm tính từ đơn giản, theo nghĩa đen mô tả ấn tượng mà Singapore để lại. Một câu trả lời 7.0 sẽ dùng “oddly forgettable” tự nhiên hơn, và một câu trả lời 7.5 sẽ nén điều này thành “strangely unable to recall much of it afterwards”.
    • GRAI found it nice but easy to forget, because glass towers look similar everywhereThis sentence joins two clauses with the simple connector 'because' in a plain causal structure. A 7.0 answer would restate the reason as a separate reflective aside, 'glass towers look much the same wherever you are', and a 7.5 answer would compress the whole idea into a single, more elegant sentence.Câu này nối hai mệnh đề bằng liên từ đơn giản “because” trong một cấu trúc nhân quả đơn thuần. Một câu trả lời 7.0 sẽ nêu lại lý do như một cụm chêm suy ngẫm riêng, “glass towers look much the same wherever you are”, và một câu trả lời 7.5 sẽ nén toàn bộ ý thành một câu duy nhất, thanh lịch hơn.
    Band 7.0

This is a 7.0 answer because of the natural hedge 'though it depends what you're after' right after the opening claim and the spoken tag 'honestly' in the closing sentence.Đây là câu trả lời 7.0 vì cách rào đón tự nhiên “though it depends what you're after” ngay sau nhận định mở đầu và thẻ khẩu ngữ “honestly” trong câu kết.

For most tourists, I'd say historical cities win, though it depends what you're after. I spent a weekend in Singapore once and found it impressive but oddly forgettable, glass towers look much the same wherever you are. Whereas walking around the old citadel in Hue, my hometown, you're standing somewhere that couldn't be anywhere else. Historical cities offer difference, which is what travel is usually about. Modern cities do have their fans, people who love architecture, shopping or nightlife, and they tend to be more comfortable overall. Một câu trả lời 6.5 sẽ nêu quan điểm đó đơn thuần bằng “though it depends on what you like” như một mệnh đề riêng với nhịp điệu kém tự nhiên hơn, trong khi một câu trả lời 7.5 tái cấu trúc toàn bộ phần mở đầu bằng “though it hinges on what you're actually after”.

A 6.5 answer would use the simpler connector 'But' followed by a plain 'because' clause.Câu này mở đầu bằng liên từ phụ thuộc “Whereas” theo sau bằng một cụm danh động từ và một cấu trúc tồn tại (“you're standing somewhere that...”), một cấu trúc linh hoạt hơn so với mệnh đề nhân quả đơn thuần ở 6.5. Một câu trả lời 6.5 sẽ dùng liên từ đơn giản hơn “But” theo sau bằng một mệnh đề “because” đơn thuần.
    Band 7.5

This reaches 7.5 through the inanimate subject construction 'A weekend in Singapore left me impressed' and the closing intensifier 'every time', a more idiomatic closing than a plain conditional statement.Câu trả lời này đạt 7.5 nhờ cấu trúc chủ ngữ vô tri “A weekend in Singapore left me impressed” và từ nhấn mạnh kết thúc “every time”, một cái kết mang tính thành ngữ hơn so với một phát biểu điều kiện đơn thuần.

For most tourists, historical cities probably win out, though it hinges on what you're actually after. A weekend in Singapore left me impressed yet strangely unable to recall much of it afterwards, glass towers, after all, look much the same wherever you land. Wandering the old citadel in Hue, my hometown, by contrast, you're standing somewhere that couldn't exist anywhere else on earth. Historical cities trade in difference, which is arguably what travel is for in the first place. Modern cities have their devotees too, those drawn to architecture, shopping or nightlife, and they're generally the more comfortable option. But given only one trip a year, I'd take the place with a story every time.

I think the main reason people move to cities is work, and then everything else that comes with it. I moved from Hue to Da Nang because there was only one design studio in my hometown, but there are many here. When you live somewhere with more jobs, you also get better hospitals, universities, and more restaurants. Another reason, especially for young people, is that cities give you more freedom, because nobody knows your family like in a small town. Of course, rent and noise are higher in cities, but for most people in their twenties, it is still worth it.

Work, mostly, and then everything that gathers around work, I'd say. I left Hue for Da Nang because there was exactly one design studio in my hometown and there are dozens here. Once you're somewhere with jobs, you also get the hospitals, the universities, the choice of restaurants, and a bigger pool of people to become friends with. There's a quieter reason too, especially for younger people, anonymity. In a small town everyone knows whose child you are; in a city you can figure out who you want to be. This reaches 7.5 through the vivid metaphor 'the whole ecosystem that clusters around it' and the closing evaluative phrase 'that trade is clearly worth paying', a more precise verb choice than the plain 'worth it'.Câu trả lời này đạt 7.5 nhờ phép ẩn dụ sống động “the whole ecosystem that clusters around it” và cụm đánh giá kết thúc “that trade is clearly worth paying”, một lựa chọn động từ chính xác hơn so với “worth it” đơn thuần.

Work, mostly, and then the whole ecosystem that clusters around it. I left Hue for Da Nang simply because my hometown had exactly one design studio and this city has dozens. Once you've landed somewhere with jobs, the hospitals, universities, restaurant choices, and a far wider pool of potential friends all come bundled in. There's a quieter draw too, especially for the young, anonymity: in a small town everyone knows whose child you are, whereas in a city you get to decide who you'd rather be. The price is steep rent and constant noise, but for most people in their twenties, that trade is clearly worth paying.

    • FCOnce you've landed somewhere with jobs, the hospitals, universities, restaurant choices, and a far wider pool of potential friends all come bundled in.This sentence uses the vivid idiom 'come bundled in' to describe how various city benefits arrive together, a more image-based construction than the plainer 'you also get' used at lower bands. A 7.0 answer uses the more literal verb 'get', and a 6.5 answer states this even more plainly.Câu này dùng thành ngữ sống động “come bundled in” để mô tả các lợi ích của thành phố đến cùng nhau ra sao, một cấu trúc dựa trên hình ảnh hơn so với “you also get” đơn giản hơn được dùng ở các band thấp hơn.
    • LRthe whole ecosystem that clusters around itThis is a vivid, scientific metaphor ('ecosystem', 'clusters') applied to city life, considerably more distinctive than the plainer 'everything that gathers around work' used at 7.0.Đây là một phép ẩn dụ sống động, mang tính khoa học (“ecosystem”, “clusters”) áp dụng cho đời sống thành phố, đặc sắc hơn nhiều so với “everything that gathers around work” đơn giản hơn được dùng ở 7.0.
    • GRAin a small town everyone knows whose child you are, whereas in a city you get to decide who you'd rather beThis sentence uses the subordinating connector 'whereas' instead of a semicolon to join the two balanced clauses, and replaces 'figure out' with the more idiomatic 'get to decide', a slightly more polished version of the 7.0 structure. A 6.5 answer would use only a single short clause with no matching city-side comparison at all.Câu này dùng liên từ phụ thuộc “whereas” thay vì dấu chấm phẩy để nối hai mệnh đề cân bằng, và thay “figure out” bằng “get to decide” mang tính thành ngữ hơn, một phiên bản trau chuốt hơn một chút của cấu trúc 7.0.

    Band 6.5

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain listing sentence about city demands and the simple closing summary 'So it depends on whether someone already has friends and family nearby or not'.Đây là câu trả lời 6.5 vì câu liệt kê đơn thuần về những đòi hỏi của thành phố và phần tổng kết cuối đơn giản “So it depends on whether someone already has friends and family nearby or not”.

I think cities are usually better for younger people. City life needs energy to deal with long commutes, crowded buildings, and constant change, and younger people can handle that more easily while they are still building their life. My grandmother, for example, has always refused to move from Hue to Da Nang, even though the hospitals here are better. She likes that everything she needs is within a ten-minute walk. But cities can also be good for older people who live alone, because services and company are close by. So it depends on whether someone already has friends and family nearby or not.

Một câu trả lời 7.0 sẽ diễn đạt lại bằng “It really comes down to whether the person already has a strong local network or needs to find one”, và một câu trả lời 7.5 sẽ mở rộng điều này bằng “or is still hunting for one”.
    • LRhandle that more easilyThis is a plain, generic verb phrase describing adaptability, without any more vivid or precise alternative. A 7.0 answer would restate this idea as 'suit someone who's still building a life', a more natural collocation, and a 7.5 answer would extend this with 'in the process of building a life'.Đây là một cụm động từ đơn giản, chung chung mô tả khả năng thích nghi, không có lựa chọn thay thế nào sống động hoặc chính xác hơn. Một câu trả lời 7.0 sẽ diễn đạt lại ý này thành “suit someone who's still building a life”, một cách kết hợp từ tự nhiên hơn, và một câu trả lời 7.5 sẽ mở rộng điều này bằng “in the process of building a life”.
    • GRACity life needs energy to deal with long commutes, crowded buildings, and constant change, and younger people can handle that more easily while they are still building their life. This long sentence coordinates two clauses with 'and' in a fairly plain structure, listing the demands separately from the response to them.
    Band 7.0

This is a 7.0 answer because of the compact opening fragment 'Younger people, on balance, I'd say' and the sentence where the list of city demands itself becomes the subject, 'the long commutes, the crowded buildings, the constant change all suit...'.Đây là câu trả lời 7.0 vì câu mảnh mở đầu gọn gàng “Younger people, on balance, I'd say” và câu trong đó chính danh sách các đòi hỏi của thành phố trở thành chủ ngữ, “the long commutes, the crowded buildings, the constant change all suit...”.

Younger people, on balance, I'd say. Cities reward energy and flexibility, the long commutes, the crowded buildings, the constant change all suit someone who's still building a life. Her whole world is within a ten-minute walk, and that's what she values. That said, cities can be very good for older people who are on their own, because services and company are close by. • GRAthe long commutes, the crowded buildings, the constant change all suit someone who's still building a lifeThis sentence uses a three-item list as its grammatical subject, taking a plural verb 'suit', a more advanced and compact construction than the 6.5 version, which lists the demands and then separately describes the response.

Younger people, on balance, tend to get the better end of the deal. Cities reward energy and flexibility, the long commutes, the crowded buildings, the relentless churn of change all suit someone still in the process of building a life. My grandmother, by contrast, has flatly rebuffed every suggestion of moving from Hue to Da Nang, even with better hospitals on offer here. Her entire world fits within a ten-minute walk, and that's precisely what she values about it. That said, cities can genuinely serve older people living alone well, given how close services and company sit. It really hinges on whether someone already has a strong local network or is still hunting for one.

I mostly agree, and I have seen it happen myself. In the five years I have lived in Da Nang, the riverfront has filled up with tall glass buildings that could be in any city in Asia, and my own office is actually in one of them. When cities grow, they often get the same developers, the same shops, and it becomes expensive to keep things different. But I do not think it always has to happen. Places like old markets or local food streets can keep their character if the city protects them. Ha Noi, for example, is very big but still feels unique. So growth makes it easier to lose character, but it is not automatic.

I mostly agree, having watched it unfold firsthand. Over the five years I've lived in Da Nang, the riverfront has sprouted tall glass buildings indistinguishable from any other city in Asia, my own office sits in one of them, fittingly enough. Growth tends to import the same developers, the same chains, the same off-the-shelf solutions, and difference becomes an expensive thing to preserve. Yet it isn't inevitable. I think we should start with small things that people experience every day. For example, my daily ride along the Han River is much better on parts with shade and a good pavement, and this is much cheaper to fix than building a new metro line. Besides that, cities need public transport that people actually want to use instead of driving, affordable housing near workplaces, and green spaces close to home instead of just one big park far away. I would also say cities should keep local markets alive, because buying breakfast from someone who knows you makes a city feel more liveable.

My commute along the Han River is bearable on the stretches with shade and a proper pavement and pretty miserable on the stretches without, and that's a cheap fix compared with a new metro line. Beyond that, the big levers are public transport that people actually prefer to driving, housing that ordinary workers can afford near where they work, and green space within walking distance rather than in one big park across town. I'd also argue for keeping neighbourhood markets alive. A city where you can buy breakfast from someone who knows your name feels liveable in a way that infrastructure alone can't replace.

    • FCI'd also argue for keeping neighbourhood markets alive. This sentence uses the natural framing verb 'argue for' rather than the plainer 'I would also say', a slightly more assertive and fluent way of introducing a personal recommendation. A 6.5 answer would use the flatter 'I would also say cities should keep local markets alive'.Câu này dùng động từ đóng khung tự nhiên “argue for” thay vì “I would also say” đơn giản hơn, một cách giới thiệu khuyến nghị cá nhân quyết đoán, trôi chảy hơn một chút. Một câu trả lời 6.5 sẽ dùng “I would also say cities should keep local markets alive” phẳng hơn.
    • LRthe big leversThis is a moderately abstract, figurative noun phrase describing the main policy tools, more distinctive than the plain listing structure used at 6.5 with no such organising metaphor.Đây là một cụm danh từ trừu tượng, giàu hình tượng vừa phải mô tả các công cụ chính sách chính, đặc sắc hơn cấu trúc liệt kê đơn thuần được dùng ở 6.5 vốn không có phép ẩn dụ tổ chức như vậy.
    • GRAMy commute along the Han River is bearable on the stretches with shade and a proper pavement and pretty miserable on the stretches withoutThis sentence uses ellipsis, dropping the repeated noun 'stretches' in the second half, a more compact and fluent parallel structure than the plain single comparative sentence at 6.5. A 6.5 answer would state this as a single simple comparative sentence without the parallel construction.Câu này dùng phép tỉnh lược, bỏ danh từ lặp lại “stretches” ở nửa sau, một cấu trúc song song gọn gàng, trôi chảy hơn so với câu so sánh đơn giản đơn thuần ở 6.5.
    Band 7.5

This reaches 7.5 through the vivid noun phrase 'the small, everyday frictions' and the compressed verb 'swings from... to', which replaces the parallel ellipsis structure of the 7.0 answer with an even tighter single-verb construction.Câu trả lời này đạt 7.5 nhờ cụm danh từ sống động “the small, everyday frictions” và động từ nén “swings from... to”, thay thế cấu trúc tỉnh lược song song của câu trả lời 7.0 bằng một cấu trúc một động từ còn chặt chẽ hơn nữa.

Start with the small, everyday frictions people actually touch, I'd argue, not the grand projects. My commute along the Han River swings from perfectly bearable on shaded, well-paved stretches to genuinely miserable where those things vanish, and fixing that costs a fraction of a new metro line. Beyond that, the real levers are public transport people genuinely prefer over driving, housing ordinary workers can afford near their jobs, and green space within walking distance rather than concentrated in one distant park. I'd also make the case for keeping neighbourhood markets alive. A city where you can buy breakfast from someone who knows your name is liveable in a way no amount of infrastructure can substitute for.

A 6.5 answer opens with the flattest possible framing, 'I think we should start with small things that people experience every day'.Phần mở đầu này thêm thẻ tương phản “not the grand projects” sau cụm chêm “I'd argue”, làm sắc nét nhận định bằng một sự tương phản rõ ràng, một động thái quyết đoán hơn so với phần mở đầu đơn giản hơn ở 7.0. Một câu trả lời 6.5 mở đầu bằng khung phẳng nhất có thể, “I think we should start with small things that people experience every day”.

    • GRAMy commute along the Han River swings from perfectly bearable on shaded, well-paved stretches to genuinely miserable where those things vanishThis sentence uses the single vivid verb 'swings from...to' to compress the contrast into one clause, instead of the parallel ellipsis structure with two separate adjective phrases used at 7.0. A 6.5 answer would use the plainest single comparative sentence with no such compression.Câu này dùng động từ sống động duy nhất “swings from...to” để nén sự tương phản vào một mệnh đề, thay vì cấu trúc tỉnh lược song song với hai cụm tính từ riêng biệt được dùng ở 7.0.
  8. 8. Does moving from cities to the countryside benefit society?

    So sánh Band 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 cho câu hỏi này
    Band 6.5

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain conditional framing 'but only if the people moving bring something useful with them' and the simple closing summary 'So it depends on whether people connect with the place or just use it'.Đây là câu trả lời 6.5 vì khung điều kiện đơn thuần “but only if the people moving bring something useful with them” và phần tổng kết cuối đơn giản “So it depends on whether people connect with the place or just use it”.

I think it can benefit society, but only if the people moving bring something useful with them. For example, a designer I used to work with moved back to his family's farm in Quang Nam, and instead of just growing peppers, he built an online business and now gives jobs to six people from the village. That is a real benefit because skills and money go out to the countryside. But if people move just to escape the city and still work remotely for city companies, it might only make house prices go up without giving much back. So it depends on whether people connect with the place or just use it.

    • FCSo it depends on whether people connect with the place or just use it.This closing sentence uses the plain connector 'So' before a basic 'whether...or' contrast. A 7.0 answer would restate this with the more precise 'the movement itself is neutral; what matters is whether the newcomers connect with the place or just consume it', and a 7.5 answer would use the stronger verb 'engage with' instead of 'connect with'.Câu kết này dùng liên từ đơn giản “So” trước một sự tương phản “whether...or” cơ bản. Một câu trả lời 7.0 sẽ diễn đạt lại bằng “the movement itself is neutral; what matters is whether the newcomers connect with the place or just consume it” chính xác hơn, và một câu trả lời 7.5 sẽ dùng động từ mạnh hơn “engage with” thay cho “connect with”.
    • LRgives jobs toThis is a plain, basic verb phrase describing employment creation, without any more precise or formal alternative. A 7.0 answer would use the more standard 'employs', and a 7.5 answer keeps this same precise verb within a more compressed sentence.Đây là một cụm động từ đơn giản, cơ bản mô tả việc tạo việc làm, không có lựa chọn thay thế nào chính xác hoặc trang trọng hơn.
    • GRAinstead of just growing peppers, he built an online business and now gives jobs to six people from the villageThis sentence uses the subordinate contrastive phrase 'instead of' followed by two coordinated clauses joined with 'and', in a fairly plain structure. A 7.0 answer would use the more precise verb 'employs' in place of 'gives jobs to', and a 7.5 answer would restructure the ending into an appositive summary phrase.Câu này dùng cụm tương phản phụ thuộc “instead of” theo sau bằng hai mệnh đề đẳng lập nối bằng “and”, trong một cấu trúc khá đơn thuần.
    Band 7.0

This is a 7.0 answer because of the compact appositive summary 'That's a real benefit, skills and money flowing outward' and the closing semicolon-linked reflective sentence about the movement being 'neutral'.Đây là câu trả lời 7.0 vì phần tóm tắt đồng vị ngữ gọn gàng “That's a real benefit, skills and money flowing outward” và câu suy ngẫm kết thúc nối bằng dấu chấm phẩy về việc sự dịch chuyển là “neutral”.

It can, if the people moving bring something with them, I'd say. A designer I used to work with moved back to his family's farm in Quảng Nam, and instead of just growing peppers he built an online brand and now employs six people from the village. That's a real benefit, skills and money flowing outward. • FCSo the movement itself is neutral; what matters is whether the newcomers connect with the place or just consume it.This closing sentence uses a semicolon to join a short evaluative claim with a cleft explanation, a more sophisticated and reflective structure than a flat 'So it depends on' sentence. A 6.5 answer would state this more simply as 'So it depends on whether people connect with the place or just use it', with no semicolon or reflective framing.Câu kết này dùng dấu chấm phẩy để nối một nhận định đánh giá ngắn với một lời giải thích kiểu nhấn mạnh, một cấu trúc tinh vi, mang tính suy ngẫm hơn so với câu “So it depends on” phẳng lặng. Một câu trả lời 6.5 sẽ nêu điều này đơn giản hơn là “So it depends on whether people connect with the place or just use it”, không có dấu chấm phẩy hay khung suy ngẫm.
    • LRskills and money flowing outwardThis is an appositive noun phrase using the participle 'flowing', a more compact and vivid image than the plain causal clause 'because skills and money go out to the countryside' used at 6.5.Đây là một cụm danh từ đồng vị ngữ dùng phân từ “flowing”, một hình ảnh gọn gàng, sống động hơn so với mệnh đề nhân quả đơn thuần “because skills and money go out to the countryside” được dùng ở 6.5.
    • GRAThat's a real benefit, skills and money flowing outward. This sentence attaches an absolute construction (noun plus participle, 'skills and money flowing outward') after a comma, standing in for a full finite clause, a more compact and flexible structure than the plain causal sentence at 6.5. A 6.5 answer would use the finite clause 'That is a real benefit because skills and money go out to the countryside'.Câu này gắn một cấu trúc độc lập (danh từ cộng phân từ, “skills and money flowing outward”) sau dấu phẩy, thay cho một mệnh đề chia đầy đủ, một cấu trúc gọn gàng, linh hoạt hơn so với câu nhân quả đơn thuần ở 6.5. Một câu trả lời 6.5 sẽ dùng mệnh đề chia “That is a real benefit because skills and money go out to the countryside”.
    Band 7.5

This reaches 7.5 through the more formal opening connector 'provided' and the compressed appositive closing 'instead of just in', which sharpens the image of outward flow beyond the plainer version at 7.0.Câu trả lời này đạt 7.5 nhờ liên từ mở đầu trang trọng hơn “provided” và phần kết đồng vị ngữ nén “instead of just in”, làm sắc nét hình ảnh dòng chảy ra ngoài vượt qua phiên bản đơn giản hơn ở 7.0.

It can, provided the people moving actually bring something with them. A designer I once worked with moved back to his family's farm in Quảng Nam, and rather than simply growing peppers, he built an online brand that now employs six people from the village, a genuine benefit, skills and money flowing outward instead of just in. This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain cause-and-effect explanation about flooding and the simple closing statement 'I think the real goal should be managing these problems well, not making a perfect city'.Đây là câu trả lời 6.5 vì lời giải thích nhân quả đơn thuần về lũ lụt và phát biểu kết thúc đơn giản “I think the real goal should be managing these problems well, not making a perfect city”.

I think some problems will be solved, but new ones will also appear. For example, Da Nang floods every October, even though the city has built many drainage projects, because they keep covering the land that used to absorb the rain water with buildings. In some wealthy cities, problems like air pollution and traffic have already been solved, so I think these problems can be solved with enough money and effort. But cities are always full of people wanting the same space, so this kind of problem will probably never completely go away. I think the real goal should be managing these problems well, not making a perfect city.

• FCwe're basically creating the problem faster than we fix itThis reflective aside, attached after a comma with no connector, offers a genuine interpretive observation rather than simply stating the cause and effect. A 6.5 answer would not attempt this kind of reflective summary, stopping instead at the plain causal explanation about covering land with buildings.Cụm chêm suy ngẫm này, gắn sau một dấu phẩy mà không có từ nối, đưa ra một nhận xét mang tính diễn giải thực sự thay vì chỉ nêu quan hệ nhân quả.
    • LRpaving over the landThis phrasal verb is a more natural, idiomatic collocation than the plain 'covering the land' used at 6.5, specifically evoking the image of concrete over soil.Cụm động từ này là một cách kết hợp từ tự nhiên, mang tính thành ngữ hơn so với “covering the land” đơn thuần được dùng ở 6.5, gợi lên cụ thể hình ảnh bê tông phủ lên đất.

But cities are, at bottom, too many people competing for the same patch of ground, and that tension never fully dissolves.
