Gần nhất ra thi tháng 5–8/2026

Đề bài (cue card)

Describe a child you know who enjoys painting or drawing

You should say:

  • How you know this child
  • How often this child paints or draws
  • What types of things this child paints or draws
  • And explain why you think this child enjoys painting or drawing

Band 6.5

The answer introduces Bin and his habit in short, plain sentences ('he asks for paper and crayons as soon as he gets home from kindergarten') and ends with a simple stated conclusion.Câu trả lời giới thiệu bé Bin và thói quen của bé bằng những câu ngắn gọn, đơn giản ('bé xin giấy và bút sáp ngay khi vừa về nhà từ trường mẫu giáo') và kết thúc bằng một kết luận được nêu ra đơn giản.

The child I want to talk about is Bin. He is the son of my neighbour, and he lives two floors below me in my apartment building in Da Nang. I have known him since he was a baby, and now he is six years old. Sometimes his mother is busy, so I look after him for an hour or two, and that is when I really got to know him.

Bin draws almost every day, I think. His mother told me he asks for paper and crayons as soon as he gets home from kindergarten. He doesn't draw for very long, maybe twenty minutes, but he does it very often, even before dinner.

He mostly draws simple things, like his family, his cat, and motorbikes, because he loves watching the traffic from the balcony. Sometimes he draws Dragon Bridge too, because he can see it from his window, and he always adds too many lights on it.

I think Bin enjoys drawing because it makes him feel proud. Every time he finishes a picture, he runs to show his mother and me, and we always say it's beautiful. I think that makes him want to draw more and more. It's a simple hobby, but it makes him really happy.

  • LRThe child I want to talk about is Bin.A bare formulaic opener names the topic and the child directly, using the simplest possible construction ("The child I want to talk about is X") with no elaboration or hedging -- exactly the plain, functional opening the Band 6.5 descriptor expects, prioritizing clarity over any stylistic variation. Compare this with the Band 7.5 version of the same prompt, which opens instead with "One child who comes to mind is..." -- a noticeably more considered, less formulaic phrasing choice.Một câu mở đầu mang tính khuôn mẫu, trần trụi nêu thẳng chủ đề và đứa trẻ được nhắc đến, sử dụng cấu trúc đơn giản nhất có thể ("The child I want to talk about is X") không có sự triển khai hay rào đón nào — đúng là kiểu mở đầu đơn giản, mang tính chức năng mà tiêu chí Band 6.5 kỳ vọng, ưu tiên sự rõ ràng hơn bất kỳ sự biến tấu phong cách nào. So sánh điều này với phiên bản Band 7.5 của cùng đề bài, vốn mở đầu bằng "One child who comes to mind is..."
  • GRAhe asks for paper and crayons as soon as he gets home from kindergarten"As soon as" introduces a basic time clause that is grammatically accurate but structurally unambitious -- a single subordinate clause of the kind the Band 6.5 grammar descriptor explicitly permits ("a few basic complex ones... when/that"), stopping well short of the layered relative-plus-participial constructions seen in this same topic's 7.0 and 7.5 versions.
  • FCIt's a simple hobby, but it makes him really happy.A short coordinated sentence with "but" states the conclusion directly with no further elaboration or reflection, closing the answer functionally rather than memorably -- this matches Band 6.5's expectation of staying "modest and natural... not impressive," in clear contrast to how the Band 7.5 version of the same topic closes with a more analytical claim about art helping the child "share what she's thinking without having to talk too much."Một câu ngắn nối bằng "but" nêu kết luận trực tiếp mà không có sự triển khai hay suy ngẫm thêm nào, khép lại câu trả lời một cách mang tính chức năng chứ không đáng nhớ — điều này khớp với kỳ vọng của Band 6.5 về việc giữ sự 'khiêm tốn và tự nhiên... không gây ấn tượng mạnh,' trái ngược rõ rệt với cách phiên bản Band 7.5 của cùng chủ đề khép lại bằng một nhận định mang tính phân tích hơn về việc nghệ thuật giúp đứa trẻ 'chia sẻ những gì con bé đang nghĩ mà không phải nói quá nhiều.'
Band 7.0

The answer develops the habit with a concessive-result sentence ('even though he usually only sits still... he does it so consistently') and the natural phrase 'a little obsessed with,' staying fluent without unusual vocabulary.Câu trả lời phát triển thói quen đó bằng một câu nhượng bộ-kết quả ('dù bé thường chỉ ngồi yên được... nhưng bé làm điều đó đều đặn đến mức') và cụm từ tự nhiên 'hơi mê mẩn,' vẫn giữ được sự trôi chảy mà không cần từ ngữ gì đặc biệt.

The child I'd like to talk about is Minh, the son of one of my neighbours, who lives just below me in the same apartment building here in Da Nang. I've known him since he was a toddler, and he's about six now — his mum sometimes asks me to keep an eye on him for an hour or so, which is really how I got to know him properly.

From what I can tell, he draws almost every single day. According to his mum, he asks for paper and crayons more or less as soon as he gets back from kindergarten, and even though he usually only sits still for fifteen or twenty minutes at a time, he does it so consistently that it's clearly become a proper habit rather than just a passing interest.

He mostly draws fairly ordinary things — his family, the family cat, and motorbikes, which he's a little obsessed with because he spends ages watching the traffic from the balcony. He also quite often draws the Dragon Bridge, since he can see it from his bedroom window, though he always adds far more lights onto it than actually exist.

I think the main reason Minh enjoys drawing is that it makes him feel genuinely proud of himself. Every time he finishes even a simple picture, he comes running to show his mum or me, and we always make a point of telling him how good it looks. That reaction seems to be exactly what keeps him coming back to it, and I suspect that small, regular sense of achievement matters more to him at this age than the drawing itself.

  • GRAhis mum sometimes asks me to keep an eye on him for an hour or so, which is really how I got to know him properlyThe non-defining relative clause "which is really how I got to know him properly" attaches a reflective aside to the factual babysitting statement, using "which" to refer back to the whole preceding clause rather than a single noun -- a naturally accurate extension typical of the "comfortable mix... generally accurate" Band 7.0 grammar target, adding personal context without breaking into two sentences. The idiomatic phrase "keep an eye on" also does useful, unforced work here.Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định "which is really how I got to know him properly" gắn thêm một lời suy ngẫm vào câu nêu sự kiện trông trẻ, dùng "which" để chỉ lại toàn bộ mệnh đề trước đó chứ không phải một danh từ đơn lẻ -- đây là một cách mở rộng tự nhiên, chính xác, điển hình của tiêu chí ngữ pháp Band 7.0 "kết hợp thoải mái... nhìn chung chính xác", thêm bối cảnh cá nhân mà không phải tách thành hai câu. Cụm thành ngữ "keep an eye on" cũng phát huy tác dụng một cách hữu ích, tự nhiên ở đây.
  • LRhe's a little obsessed with because he spends ages watching the traffic from the balcony"A little obsessed with," softened by the hedge "a little," is more vivid and natural than a plain phrase like "he really likes," and it's followed by "spends ages," another informal collocation for spending a long time -- two flexible, topic-appropriate choices stacked together, consistent with the Band 7.0 target's "a few flexible or topic-specific" vocabulary items rather than a single isolated one.
  • FCeven though he usually only sits still for fifteen or twenty minutes at a time, he does it so consistently that it's clearly become a proper habitThe "even though X, Y" concessive frame anticipates a possible objection (his short attention span) before resolving it with a "so...that" result clause concluding it's "a proper habit," modeling a genuine two-step argument rather than a flat assertion -- this is the reason-and-development the Band 7.0 fluency and coherence target rewards, using natural linking rather than formal transitions like "however." It converts the raw observation (15-20 minutes) into an interpretive claim about consistency.Khung nhượng bộ "even though X, Y" dự đoán trước một sự phản bác có thể xảy ra (khoảng thời gian tập trung ngắn của cậu bé) trước khi giải quyết nó bằng một mệnh đề kết quả "so...that" kết luận rằng đó là "a proper habit", mô hình hóa một lập luận thực sự gồm hai bước thay vì một khẳng định bằng phẳng -- đây chính là kiểu lý do và phát triển ý mà tiêu chí độ trôi chảy và mạch lạc Band 7.0 đánh giá cao, sử dụng liên kết tự nhiên thay vì các từ chuyển ý trang trọng như "however". Nó biến quan sát thô (15-20 phút) thành một nhận định mang tính diễn giải về sự đều đặn.
  • LRthat small, regular sense of achievement matters more to him at this age than the drawing itself"Sense of achievement" is an abstract noun phrase naming the underlying psychological motivation, more analytical than a plain restatement like "he feels happy," and the comparative structure ("matters more... than the drawing itself") draws a genuinely interpretive distinction between process and motivation -- this is the topic-specific, slightly more abstract vocabulary Band 7.0 allows, a clear step up from what the parallel Band 6.5 answer on this same topic (Bin) settles for: simply "it makes him feel proud.""Sense of achievement" là một cụm danh từ trừu tượng gọi tên động lực tâm lý bên dưới, mang tính phân tích hơn một cách diễn đạt lại đơn giản như "he feels happy", và cấu trúc so sánh ("matters more... than the drawing itself") vẽ ra một sự phân biệt mang tính diễn giải thực sự giữa quá trình và động lực -- đây là vốn từ hơi trừu tượng hơn, gắn với chủ đề mà Band 7.0 cho phép, một bước tiến rõ rệt so với những gì bài Band 6.5 song song về cùng chủ đề (Bin) dừng lại: đơn giản là "it makes him feel proud".
Band 7.5

The answer uses the idiomatic phrasal verb 'pull out' and an embedded participial clause describing the drawings, closing with the genuinely reflective explanation that art may be Ha's way of communicating without talking.Câu trả lời sử dụng cụm động từ mang tính thành ngữ 'lôi ra' và một mệnh đề phân từ được lồng ghép miêu tả các bức vẽ, kết thúc bằng lời giải thích thực sự giàu suy ngẫm rằng có lẽ hội họa là cách bé Hà giao tiếp mà không cần lời nói.

One child who comes to mind is my cousin's daughter, Ha, who is eight years old and lives with her parents in Hue. I only see her a few times a year, usually when I travel back home for holidays, but we always end up spending time together-especially if there's something creative to do.

Ha is honestly obsessed with drawing and painting. According to her mom, she'll pull out her crayons or watercolors almost every day after finishing her schoolwork, sometimes for an hour or more. The last time I visited, during Tet, she showed me a whole folder of her latest art. Some days, she'll do quick sketches on scrap paper, but on weekends, she sits at the kitchen table with a proper sketchbook and really focuses.

She draws a lot of different things, but her favorites seem to be animals and scenes from things she's watched. There were so many cats and dogs in her folder, some wearing hats or glasses, and I spotted several pages where she'd recreated scenes from a cartoon she loves. She also drew pictures of her school friends, and even tried to draw the view from her bedroom window, which I thought was impressive for her age.

I think Ha enjoys painting and drawing because it gives her a way to express herself and escape into her own world for a while. She's a bit shy around new people, so art is probably a way for her to share what she's thinking without having to talk too much. Plus, her parents always praise her efforts, and I think that encouragement makes her love it even more.

  • LRshe'll pull out her crayons or watercolors almost every day after finishing her schoolworkThe phrasal verb "pull out" (rather than the plain "get" or "take") suggests a quick, habitual, almost reflexive action, giving the routine more vivid, idiomatic texture than a neutral verb would -- this is the "several precise or less-common words" the Band 7.5 lexical target wants used naturally rather than showily. Compare the parallel Band 7.0 sentence on this same topic ("he asks for paper and crayons"), which uses the plainer "asks for" instead.Cụm động từ "pull out" (thay vì "get" hay "take" đơn giản) gợi ý một hành động nhanh, mang tính thói quen, gần như phản xạ tự nhiên, mang lại cho thói quen này một sắc thái sinh động, mang tính thành ngữ hơn so với một động từ trung tính.
  • GRAThere were so many cats and dogs in her folder, some wearing hats or glasses, and I spotted several pages where she'd recreated scenes from a cartoon she loves. An existential "there were" clause is extended by a reduced participial clause ("some wearing hats or glasses") modifying "cats and dogs" without a separate relative pronoun, then coordinated with a second independent clause containing its own relative clause ("where she'd recreated...") -- three distinct structural devices working together accurately, exactly the "varied complex structures... mostly error-free" the Band 7.5 grammar target specifies, going beyond the single relative-or-participial-clause pattern typical of the Band 7.0 answer on this same topic.Một mệnh đề tồn tại "there were" được mở rộng bằng một mệnh đề phân từ rút gọn ("some wearing hats or glasses") bổ nghĩa cho "cats and dogs" mà không có đại từ quan hệ riêng, sau đó được nối song song với một mệnh đề độc lập thứ hai có chứa mệnh đề quan hệ riêng của nó ("where she'd recreated...").
  • FCart is probably a way for her to share what she's thinking without having to talk too muchRather than simply stating a cause ("because she likes drawing"), the sentence offers a considered psychological interpretation -- linking the child's shyness to art as an alternative channel of communication -- which is the single clear reflective or evaluative point the Band 7.5 fluency and coherence target asks for. The hedge "probably" also signals this is the speaker's own inference rather than a stated fact, adding a layer of thoughtful uncertainty a flatter lower-band answer wouldn't include.

    Band 6.5

This is a 6.5 answer because of its clear, plainly listed stages of development and the simple final example 'sometimes they use the wrong surface, like a wall'.Đây là một bài mẫu 6.5 vì cách liệt kê các giai đoạn phát triển rõ ràng, đơn giản, và ví dụ kết thúc giản dị "sometimes they use the wrong surface, like a wall".

I think children start drawing very early, almost as soon as they can hold a crayon. My nephew made his first marks on my sister's wall when he was about eighteen months old, and he drew his first person, just a circle with legs, at around four. Most children follow a similar pattern: scribbling at one or two years old, then shapes at three, and people or houses by four or five. Children usually teach themselves to draw if they have crayons and paper, but sometimes they use the wrong surface, like a wall.

    • FCMost children follow a similar patternThis is a plain, generic transitional sentence introducing the list of stages, without any distinctive framing. A 7.0 answer would use the closer paraphrase 'Most children follow that path', and a 7.5 answer would use the slightly more formal 'Most children trace that same arc'.Đây là một câu chuyển tiếp đơn giản, chung chung để dẫn vào danh sách các giai đoạn, không có cách diễn đạt gì đặc biệt. Bài 7.0 sẽ dùng cách diễn giải gần hơn "Most children follow that path", còn bài 7.5 sẽ dùng cách nói trang trọng hơn một chút "Most children trace that same arc".
    • LRa circle with legsThis is a plain, literal descriptive phrase with no elaboration. A 7.5 answer would extend this with the more vivid verb phrase 'a circle sprouting legs', showing a livelier image for the same idea.Đây là một cụm từ miêu tả đơn giản, trực nghĩa, không có sự khai triển gì thêm.
    • GRAhe drew his first person, just a circle with legs, at around fourThis sentence uses a simple appositive phrase set off by commas, in an otherwise plain past-tense structure. A 7.0 answer would extend this into a longer sentence joined by 'and' describing both the first marks and the first person together, and a 7.5 answer would use a more literary appositive, 'a circle sprouting legs'.Câu này dùng một cụm đồng vị đơn giản được tách ra bằng dấu phẩy, trong một cấu trúc thì quá khứ đơn giản nói chung.
    Band 7.0

This is a 7.0 answer because of the reflective closing observation 'it's one of the few skills children seem to teach themselves', which adds a mild evaluative comment beyond a plain description.Đây là một bài mẫu 7.0 vì có nhận xét mang tính suy ngẫm ở cuối "it's one of the few skills children seem to teach themselves", thêm vào một bình luận mang tính đánh giá nhẹ vượt trên một sự miêu tả đơn thuần.

Almost as soon as they can hold something that makes a mark, I'd say. My nephew produced his first drawings on my sister's wall at about eighteen months, lines and loops that were pure pleasure in the movement, and his first recognisable person, a circle with legs, arrived around four. Most children follow that path: scribbling from one or two, shapes and symbols by three, and people or houses by four or five. Honestly, it's one of the few skills children seem to teach themselves, given crayons and any surface, though the surface they pick isn't always the right one.

    • FCHonestly, it's one of the few skills children seem to teach themselvesThis sentence opens with the spoken marker 'Honestly' before making a reflective, generalised observation, rather than simply stating a fact. A 6.5 answer would state this more flatly as 'Children usually teach themselves to draw', with no such framing, and a 7.5 answer might drop the hedge 'seem to' for a more confident claim.Câu này mở đầu bằng dấu hiệu khẩu ngữ "Honestly" trước khi đưa ra một nhận xét mang tính suy ngẫm, khái quát, thay vì chỉ nêu một sự thật đơn thuần.
    • LRpure pleasure in the movementThis is a moderately abstract, evocative phrase describing the physical joy of drawing, more distinctive than the plain description at 6.5. A 7.5 answer keeps a similar phrase but embeds it in a more literary sentence structure.Đây là một cụm từ trừu tượng vừa phải, gợi cảm xúc, miêu tả niềm vui thể chất của việc vẽ, đặc sắc hơn cách miêu tả đơn giản ở band 6.5.
    • GRAhis first recognisable person, a circle with legs, arrived around fourThis sentence uses a delayed subject with the verb 'arrived' instead of a simple 'he drew', personifying the milestone as something that happens to the child. A 6.5 answer would use the plainer active construction 'he drew his first person... at around four', and a 7.5 answer would extend the appositive with more vivid wording.Câu này dùng động từ "arrived" với chủ ngữ bị trì hoãn thay vì cách nói đơn giản "he drew", nhân cách hóa cột mốc này như một điều xảy đến với đứa trẻ. Bài 6.5 sẽ dùng cấu trúc chủ động đơn giản hơn "he drew his first person... at around four", còn bài 7.5 sẽ mở rộng cụm đồng vị bằng những từ ngữ sinh động hơn.
    Band 7.5

This reaches 7.5 through the vivid image 'a circle sprouting legs' and the closing parenthetical insertion 'more often than not', which adds a wry, compact evaluative touch rather than a plain statement.Bài này đạt 7.5 nhờ hình ảnh sinh động "a circle sprouting legs" và cụm chèn ở cuối "more often than not", thêm vào một nét đánh giá dí dỏm, súc tích thay vì một phát biểu đơn thuần.

Almost as soon as they can hold something that makes a mark. My nephew produced his first drawings on my sister's wall at about eighteen months, lines and loops that were pure pleasure in the movement, and his first recognisable person, a circle sprouting legs, arrived around four. Most children trace that same arc: scribbling from one or two, shapes and symbols by three, then a long stretch of drawing the same handful of things with steadily growing detail. It's one of the few skills children teach themselves entirely unprompted, given only crayons and a surface, and the surface, more often than not, turns out to be the wrong one.

    • FCIt's one of the few skills children teach themselves entirely unpromptedThis sentence adds the precise adverb 'entirely unprompted' to sharpen the claim, going beyond the hedged 'seem to teach themselves' used at 7.0. A 6.5 answer would state this fact plainly with 'Children usually teach themselves to draw', without any such intensifying detail.Câu này thêm trạng từ chính xác "entirely unprompted" để làm sắc nét thêm luận điểm, vượt qua cách nói có rào đón "seem to teach themselves" được dùng ở band 7.0.
    • LRa circle sprouting legsThis is a vivid, slightly playful verb choice ('sprouting') applied to a simple drawing, more distinctive and image-based than the plain 'a circle with legs' used at 6.5.Đây là một lựa chọn động từ sinh động, hơi tinh nghịch ("sprouting") áp dụng cho một bức vẽ đơn giản, đặc sắc và giàu hình ảnh hơn cách nói đơn giản "a circle with legs" được dùng ở band 6.5.
    • GRAthe surface, more often than not, turns out to be the wrong oneThis sentence uses a parenthetical phrase ('more often than not') inserted mid-clause, a flexible structure that adds wry emphasis without a separate sentence. A 7.0 answer would use the simpler concessive clause 'though the surface they pick isn't always the right one', and a 6.5 answer would state this as a short separate final sentence.Câu này chèn cụm từ "more often than not" vào giữa mệnh đề, một cấu trúc linh hoạt tạo thêm sự nhấn mạnh dí dỏm mà không cần một câu riêng. Bài 7.0 sẽ dùng mệnh đề nhượng bộ đơn giản hơn "though the surface they pick isn't always the right one", còn bài 6.5 sẽ phát biểu điều này thành một câu kết ngắn, riêng biệt.

    So sánh Band 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 cho câu hỏi này
    Band 6.5

This is a 6.5 answer because of its short, separated sentences describing the two teachers and the plain closing warning 'children may stop enjoying it'.Đây là một bài mẫu 6.5 vì các câu ngắn, tách biệt miêu tả hai giáo viên, và lời cảnh báo kết thúc đơn giản "children may stop enjoying it".

Yes, I think children should have art lessons, but the type of teaching matters a lot. I had two art teachers in Hue. One teacher did not let us copy her drawing and told us to draw the room from our own corner. The other teacher only gave good marks if we copied her drawing exactly. I think only the first teacher was really teaching art. Lessons can give children freedom to create without a correct answer and help them notice things carefully. But if schools only give grades for drawing, children may stop enjoying it.

    • FCI think only the first teacher was really teaching art. This sentence states a plain personal judgement using the simple verb 'was really teaching', without any stronger or more idiomatic framing. A 7.0 answer would rephrase this as 'Only one of those, I'd say, was actually teaching art', and a 7.5 answer would use the more formal 'it's fair to say'.Câu này nêu một phán đoán cá nhân đơn giản bằng động từ giản dị "was really teaching", không có cách diễn đạt mạnh mẽ hay mang tính thành ngữ hơn. Bài 7.0 sẽ diễn giải lại thành "Only one of those, I'd say, was actually teaching art", còn bài 7.5 sẽ dùng cách nói trang trọng hơn "it's fair to say".
    • LRdid not let us copyThis is a plain, literal negative verb phrase describing the teacher's rule. A 7.0 answer would use the stronger verb 'forbade' instead, and a 7.5 answer might use the same verb within a more compressed sentence.Đây là một cụm động từ phủ định đơn giản, trực nghĩa, miêu tả quy định của giáo viên.
    • GRAOne teacher did not let us copy her drawing and told us to draw the room from our own corner. This sentence joins two actions with the simple connector 'and' in a plain coordinated structure. A 7.0 answer would use the more formal verb 'forbade' followed by a relative clause, and a 7.5 answer would compress this into a semicolon-linked structure describing both teachers in one sentence.Câu này nối hai hành động bằng liên từ đơn giản "and" trong một cấu trúc song song giản dị.
    Band 7.0

This is a 7.0 answer because of the natural closing tag 'honestly' after the opening opinion and the moderately complex sentence joining both teachers with 'while' inside a single structure.Đây là một bài mẫu 7.0 vì có từ đệm tự nhiên "honestly" sau quan điểm mở đầu, và câu văn phức tạp vừa phải nối cả hai giáo viên bằng "while" trong một cấu trúc duy nhất.

Yes, and the kind matters more than the number, honestly. I had two art teachers in Hue: one forbade us from copying her drawing on the board and sent us off to draw the room from a corner nobody had chosen, while the other simply marked us on how precisely we reproduced hers. Only one of those, I'd say, was actually teaching art. Lessons give children permission to make things without a right answer, practice in looking carefully, and a way to express what they can't yet put into words. The risk, though, is turning drawing into just another graded subject, which is usually how children learn to stop.

    • FCOnly one of those, I'd say, was actually teaching art.The parenthetical hedge 'I'd say' inserted mid-sentence softens the judgement in a natural, spoken way. A 6.5 answer would state the same judgement flatly as 'I think only the first teacher was really teaching art', with no such insertion, and a 7.5 answer might drop the hedge for the more assured 'it's fair to say'.Từ đệm chèn giữa câu "I'd say" làm dịu đi phán đoán theo một cách nói tự nhiên. Bài 6.5 sẽ phát biểu cùng phán đoán đó một cách phẳng lặng như "I think only the first teacher was really teaching art", không có sự chèn vào như vậy, còn bài 7.5 có thể bỏ từ đệm để dùng cách nói chắc chắn hơn "it's fair to say".
    • LRforbade us from copyingThis uses the more formal, precise verb 'forbade' rather than the plain 'did not let us copy' used at 6.5. A 7.5 answer keeps this same verb but compresses the surrounding sentence further.Ở đây dùng động từ trang trọng, chính xác hơn "forbade" thay vì cách nói đơn giản "did not let us copy" được dùng ở band 6.5.
    • GRAone forbade us from copying her drawing on the board and sent us off to draw the room from a corner nobody had chosen, while the other simply marked us on how precisely we reproduced hersThis sentence uses a contrastive 'while' clause to combine descriptions of both teachers into one long, balanced sentence with an embedded relative clause ('nobody had chosen'). A 6.5 answer would describe the two teachers in two entirely separate sentences, and a 7.5 answer would use a semicolon instead of 'while' for tighter compression.Câu này dùng mệnh đề đối lập "while" để kết hợp miêu tả về cả hai giáo viên thành một câu dài, cân bằng, có lồng một mệnh đề quan hệ ("nobody had chosen").
    Band 7.5

This reaches 7.5 through the semicolon-linked contrast between the two teachers and the vivid closing verb 'abandon', replacing the plainer 'stop' used at lower bands.Bài này đạt 7.5 nhờ sự đối lập giữa hai giáo viên được nối bằng dấu chấm phẩy, và động từ sinh động ở cuối "abandon", thay cho từ đơn giản hơn "stop" được dùng ở các band thấp hơn.

Yes, though what kind of lessons matters far more than how many. I had two art teachers in Hue: one forbade copying her drawing off the board and packed us off to sketch the room from whichever corner we'd claimed; the other graded us purely on how faithfully we'd reproduced hers. Only one of those, it's fair to say, was teaching art at all. Good lessons grant children permission to create without a single correct answer, sharpen the habit of looking closely, and give shape to feelings they can't yet articulate in words. The danger lies in reducing drawing to yet another graded subject, which is precisely how most children learn to abandon it.

    • FCit's fair to say, was teaching art at allThe compact parenthetical 'it's fair to say' inserted mid-clause, paired with the intensifying tag 'at all', gives a more confident, idiomatic judgement than a plain statement. A 7.0 answer would use the similar but slightly less compressed 'I'd say', and a 6.5 answer would state the judgement with no hedge at all.Cụm chèn súc tích "it's fair to say" chèn vào giữa mệnh đề, kết hợp với từ nhấn mạnh "at all", đưa ra một phán đoán tự tin, mang tính thành ngữ hơn so với một phát biểu đơn thuần.
    • LRpacked us off to sketchThis is a vivid, idiomatic phrasal verb ('packed us off') paired with the more formal 'sketch', considerably more distinctive than the plain 'told us to draw' used at 6.5.Đây là một cụm động từ sinh động, mang tính thành ngữ ("packed us off"), kết hợp với từ trang trọng hơn "sketch", đặc sắc hơn nhiều so với cách nói đơn giản "told us to draw" được dùng ở band 6.5.
    • GRAone forbade copying her drawing off the board and packed us off to sketch the room from whichever corner we'd claimed; the other graded us purely on how faithfully we'd reproduced hersThis sentence uses a semicolon to join two balanced, mirrored descriptions of the teachers instead of the subordinating 'while' used at 7.0, a more compact and literary structure. A 6.5 answer would use two entirely separate sentences for the two teachers.Câu này dùng dấu chấm phẩy để nối hai miêu tả cân bằng, đối xứng về hai giáo viên thay vì liên từ phụ thuộc "while" được dùng ở band 7.0, một cấu trúc súc tích và mang tính văn chương hơn. I think children draw more because they are not embarrassed yet. My niece used to draw all the time until she was eleven. Then a classmate laughed at one of her horse drawings, and she has not drawn since that day. Children draw because it is a way to think, play, and tell stories, without worrying about other people watching. Adults have learned that people judge drawings, and they think their own work is not good enough. Also, children have more free time and materials like paper and crayons ready to use.

    Vì sao đạt band này

    • FCChildren draw because it is a way to think, play, and tell stories, without worrying about other people watching. This sentence lists three simple reasons joined by commas and 'and', using the plain phrase 'without worrying about'. A 7.0 answer would rephrase this as 'with no audience in mind', a more compact and idiomatic ending, and a 7.5 answer would push this further to 'conducted with no audience in mind whatsoever'.Câu này liệt kê ba lý do đơn giản nối bằng dấu phẩy và "and", dùng cụm từ giản dị "without worrying about". Bài 7.0 sẽ diễn giải lại thành "with no audience in mind", một cách kết thúc súc tích, mang tính thành ngữ hơn, còn bài 7.5 sẽ đẩy xa hơn nữa thành "conducted with no audience in mind whatsoever".
    • LRnot embarrassed yetThis is a basic negated adjective phrase explaining the reason, without any more vivid or specific wording. A 7.0 answer would restate this as 'nobody has taught them yet to be embarrassed', a fuller and more natural construction, and a 7.5 answer would use the same idea with tighter phrasing.Đây là một cụm tính từ phủ định cơ bản để giải thích lý do, không có từ ngữ sinh động hay cụ thể hơn. Bài 7.0 sẽ diễn đạt lại thành "nobody has taught them yet to be embarrassed", một cấu trúc đầy đủ và tự nhiên hơn, còn bài 7.5 sẽ dùng cùng ý đó với cách diễn đạt chặt chẽ hơn.
    • GRAshe has not drawn since that dayThis is a short, simple negative sentence in a plain structure. A 7.0 answer would compress this into the phrase 'she hasn't drawn since', attached directly to the earlier clause, and a 7.5 answer would add the reflective appositive 'the day judgement arrived was the day the drawing stopped'.Đây là một câu phủ định ngắn, đơn giản với cấu trúc giản dị. Bài 7.0 sẽ nén thành cụm từ "she hasn't drawn since", gắn trực tiếp vào mệnh đề trước đó, còn bài 7.5 sẽ thêm cụm đồng vị mang tính suy ngẫm "the day judgement arrived was the day the drawing stopped".
    Band 7.0

This is a 7.0 answer because of the reflective appositive clause 'the day judgement arrived was the day the drawing stopped' and the closing conditional 'if the fear left and the afternoon came back', which shows more nuance than a flat conclusion.Đây là một bài mẫu 7.0 vì mệnh đề đồng vị mang tính suy ngẫm "the day judgement arrived was the day the drawing stopped" và câu điều kiện kết thúc "if the fear left and the afternoon came back", thể hiện sự tinh tế hơn một kết luận phẳng lặng.

Because nobody has taught them yet to be embarrassed, I'd say. My niece drew constantly until eleven, when a classmate laughed at a horse, and she hasn't drawn since, the day judgement arrived was the day the drawing stopped. Children draw because it's a way of thinking, playing and telling stories with no audience in mind. Adults, on the other hand, have learned that drawings get judged, that their own aren't 'good', and that time should produce something useful. There's also simple access: a child has paper and crayons within reach and an afternoon with nothing in it. Honestly, most adults would probably draw again if the fear left and the afternoon came back.

    • FCthe day judgement arrived was the day the drawing stoppedThis appositive clause reflects on the anecdote with a balanced, almost poetic structure, rather than simply stating the fact plainly. A 6.5 answer would state the fact plainly as 'she has not drawn since that day', with no such reflective framing, while a 7.5 answer keeps a very similar structure, showing this device already sits near the top of the band range.Mệnh đề đồng vị này suy ngẫm về câu chuyện bằng một cấu trúc cân bằng, gần như mang tính thơ ca, thay vì chỉ nêu sự thật một cách đơn giản. Bài 6.5 sẽ nêu sự thật một cách phẳng lặng là "she has not drawn since that day", không có sự dẫn dắt mang tính suy ngẫm như vậy, trong khi bài 7.5 vẫn giữ một cấu trúc rất tương tự, cho thấy thủ pháp này đã ở gần đỉnh của dải band điểm này.
    • LRwith no audience in mindThis is a more compact, idiomatic phrase than the plainer 'without worrying about other people watching' used at 6.5. A 7.5 answer intensifies this further to 'conducted with no audience in mind whatsoever'.Đây là một cụm từ súc tích, mang tính thành ngữ hơn cách nói đơn giản hơn "without worrying about other people watching" được dùng ở band 6.5. Bài 7.5 tăng cường thêm nữa thành "conducted with no audience in mind whatsoever".
    • GRAa child has paper and crayons within reach and an afternoon with nothing in itThis sentence uses two parallel noun phrases joined by 'and', both built around abstract nouns of availability ('within reach', 'with nothing in it'), a more flexible structure than a simple listing sentence. A 6.5 answer would state this as 'children have more free time and materials... ready to use', a flatter parallel list.Câu này dùng "and" nối hai cụm danh từ song song, cả hai đều xoay quanh những danh từ trừu tượng về tính sẵn có ("within reach", "with nothing in it"), một cấu trúc linh hoạt hơn câu liệt kê đơn giản. Bài 6.5 sẽ phát biểu điều này là "children have more free time and materials... ready to use", một danh sách song song phẳng hơn.

Because nobody has yet taught them to be embarrassed. My niece drew constantly until eleven, when a classmate laughed at a horse, and she hasn't drawn since, the day judgement arrived was the day the drawing stopped. For children, drawing is a form of thinking, playing and storytelling conducted with no audience in mind whatsoever. Adults, by contrast, have internalised the idea that drawings get judged, that theirs aren't 'good enough', and that time ought to yield something useful. There's a simpler factor too: access, a child has paper and crayons within arm's reach and an afternoon with nothing scheduled into it. Strip away the fear and hand back the afternoon, and most adults would probably start drawing again.

    • FCStrip away the fear and hand back the afternoon, and most adults would probably start drawing again. This closing sentence uses two imperative verb phrases joined by 'and' before the main clause, a distinctive rhetorical structure instead of a standard conditional 'if' clause. A 7.0 answer would use the plainer conditional 'if the fear left and the afternoon came back', and a 6.5 answer would not attempt this kind of closing device at all.Câu kết này dùng "and" nối hai cụm động từ mệnh lệnh trước mệnh đề chính, một cấu trúc tu từ đặc sắc thay vì mệnh đề điều kiện "if" thông thường. Bài 7.0 sẽ dùng mệnh đề điều kiện đơn giản hơn "if the fear left and the afternoon came back", còn bài 6.5 sẽ không thử dùng thủ pháp kết thúc kiểu này chút nào.
    • LRconducted with no audience in mind whatsoeverThe intensifying tag 'whatsoever' added onto the already moderately idiomatic phrase pushes this further than the 7.0 version, showing a more emphatic, polished register. Bài 6.5 chỉ đạt được cụm từ cơ bản "without worrying about other people watching".
    • GRAa child has paper and crayons within arm's reach and an afternoon with nothing scheduled into itThis sentence uses the more idiomatic 'within arm's reach' and the precise passive participle 'scheduled into it', both elevating the register beyond the 7.0 version's plainer 'within reach' and 'with nothing in it'. A 6.5 answer states this idea with the flattest possible list structure.Câu này dùng cụm mang tính thành ngữ hơn "within arm's reach" và phân từ bị động chính xác "scheduled into it", cả hai đều nâng văn phong vượt trên cách nói đơn giản hơn "within reach" và "with nothing in it" của phiên bản 7.0. I think people enjoy galleries and museums for different reasons. At the Cham sculpture museum in Da Nang, I have seen tourists taking photos, students sketching, and some old men from the neighbourhood just sitting quietly near one stone statue they visit often. Museums offer beauty and quiet, which is hard to find in a busy city. They let people see old things made by hand a long time ago. They are also social places, somewhere to walk and talk with a friend. Some people even go just for the coffee shop, and that is fine too.

For several reasons that all share one building, I'd say. At the Cham sculpture museum in Da Nang, tourists photograph everything, students sketch, and a few old men from the neighbourhood simply sit with a particular stone figure they've been visiting for years, each enjoying something quite different. Galleries offer beauty, obviously, and a kind of quiet that cities generally lack. They let people see something made by hand centuries ago and feel a strange connection across time. • FCeach enjoying something quite differentThis trailing participial phrase adds a reflective observation onto the list of visitors, rather than simply ending the list, showing a mild evaluative move typical of 7.0. A 6.5 answer would end the list without this kind of reflective tag, while a 7.5 answer would extend the same idea into a fuller clause, 'each drawing something entirely different from the same room'.Cụm phân từ đuôi câu này thêm một nhận xét mang tính suy ngẫm vào danh sách những người đến thăm, thay vì chỉ đơn thuần kết thúc danh sách, thể hiện một động thái đánh giá nhẹ điển hình của band 7.0. Bài 6.5 sẽ kết thúc danh sách mà không có cụm suy ngẫm kiểu này, còn bài 7.5 sẽ mở rộng cùng ý đó thành một mệnh đề đầy đủ hơn, "each drawing something entirely different from the same room".

This reaches 7.5 through the vivid idiom 'brush up against something made by hand' and the closing sentence fragment 'And, not unreasonably, some people simply go for the café', a compact and confident closer.Bài này đạt 7.5 nhờ thành ngữ sinh động "brush up against something made by hand" và mảnh câu kết "And, not unreasonably, some people simply go for the café", một cách kết thúc súc tích, tự tin.

For several reasons that happen to share one building. At the Cham sculpture museum in Da Nang, tourists photograph everything in sight, students sketch quietly in corners, and a handful of old men from the neighbourhood simply sit with one particular stone figure they've been visiting for years, each drawing something entirely different from the same room. Galleries offer beauty, obviously, and a rare pocket of quiet that cities otherwise lack. They let people brush up against something made by hand centuries ago and feel, however briefly, a connection across time. They're social spaces too, somewhere to walk and talk with a friend while the art supplies the conversation. And, not unreasonably, some people simply go for the café.

    • FCAnd, not unreasonably, some people simply go for the café.This closing sentence opens with the coordinating conjunction 'And' plus the parenthetical hedge 'not unreasonably', a more compact and idiomatic construction than a full independent sentence. A 7.0 answer would use the fuller opener 'Honestly, some people just go for the café, and that's allowed too', and a 6.5 answer would state this even more plainly.Câu kết này mở đầu bằng liên từ kết hợp "And" cộng với từ đệm "not unreasonably", một cấu trúc súc tích, mang tính thành ngữ hơn một câu độc lập đầy đủ. Bài 7.0 sẽ dùng cách mở đầu đầy đủ hơn "Honestly, some people just go for the café, and that's allowed too", còn bài 6.5 sẽ phát biểu điều này một cách giản dị hơn nữa.
    • LRbrush up against something made by hand centuries agoThis is a vivid, idiomatic verb phrase ('brush up against') describing the experience of seeing old art, considerably more distinctive than the plain 'see old things made by hand' used at 6.5.Đây là một cụm động từ sinh động, mang tính thành ngữ ("brush up against") miêu tả trải nghiệm nhìn thấy nghệ thuật cổ xưa, đặc sắc hơn nhiều so với cách nói đơn giản "see old things made by hand" được dùng ở band 6.5.
    • GRAeach drawing something entirely different from the same roomThis sentence uses a participial phrase ('drawing...') as a compressed summary clause attached to the list, rather than a full finite clause. A 7.0 answer would use the finite participial tag 'each enjoying something quite different', and a 6.5 answer would end the list with no such summarising phrase at all.Câu này dùng cụm phân từ ("drawing...") như một mệnh đề tổng kết được nén lại gắn vào danh sách, thay vì một mệnh đề hoàn chỉnh.

    Band 6.5

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain factual sentences and the simple closing suggestion 'Maybe tourists could pay, but local people, especially children, should not have to pay'.Đây là một bài mẫu 6.5 vì các câu văn giản dị, nêu sự thật, và đề xuất kết thúc đơn giản "Maybe tourists could pay, but local people, especially children, should not have to pay".

Yes, I think public museums should be free, at least for local people. Near my home, there is a museum that is free on one Sunday every month, and on that day, many local families come who never visit on other days. This shows that even a small ticket price is a big problem for them. Free entry also helps children build a habit of visiting museums when they grow up. Of course, museums need money for staff and to take care of the art. Maybe tourists could pay, but local people, especially children, should not have to pay.

    • FCThis shows that even a small ticket price is a big problem for them. This sentence states the conclusion plainly using the basic phrase 'a big problem', without any more precise or idiomatic wording. A 7.0 answer would rephrase this as 'the fee, even a small one, turns out to be the whole barrier', with a more specific noun, and a 7.5 answer would use the more literary 'the entire barrier'.Câu này nêu kết luận một cách giản dị bằng cụm từ cơ bản "a big problem", không có từ ngữ chính xác hay mang tính thành ngữ hơn. Bài 7.0 sẽ diễn giải lại thành "the fee, even a small one, turns out to be the whole barrier", với một danh từ cụ thể hơn, còn bài 7.5 sẽ dùng cách nói mang tính văn chương hơn "the entire barrier".
    • LRhelps children build a habitThis is a plain, literal verb phrase describing the long-term benefit. A 7.0 answer would restate this with the more natural 'builds the habit early, in children who then return as adults', and a 7.5 answer would use the more vivid verb 'plants the habit early'.Đây là một cụm động từ đơn giản, trực nghĩa miêu tả lợi ích lâu dài. Bài 7.0 sẽ diễn đạt lại bằng cách tự nhiên hơn "builds the habit early, in children who then return as adults", còn bài 7.5 sẽ dùng động từ sinh động hơn "plants the habit early".
    • GRAmany local families come who never visit on other daysThis sentence uses a relative clause attached to a plain main clause, in a straightforward structure. A 7.0 answer would restate this using the more precise phrase 'who never appear on paid days', and a 7.5 answer would compress this further within a longer, more literary sentence.Câu này dùng một mệnh đề quan hệ gắn vào một mệnh đề chính giản dị, cấu trúc thẳng thắn. Bài 7.0 sẽ diễn đạt lại bằng cụm từ chính xác hơn "who never appear on paid days", còn bài 7.5 sẽ nén điều này chặt hơn nữa trong một câu dài hơn, mang tính văn chương hơn.
    Band 7.0

This is a 7.0 answer because of the natural opening framing 'and one detail persuades me' and the closing concession 'The counter-argument is funding, and it's a fair one', which acknowledges an opposing view before responding to it.Đây là một bài mẫu 7.0 vì cách mở đầu tự nhiên "and one detail persuades me" và sự nhượng bộ ở cuối "The counter-argument is funding, and it's a fair one", thừa nhận một quan điểm đối lập trước khi phản hồi nó.

For public collections, yes, and one detail persuades me. The museum near me has one free Sunday a month, and on that day it fills with local families who never appear on paid days, the fee, even a small one, turns out to be the whole barrier. Art that a nation owns should really be seen by the nation, not just by tourists and the well-off. Free entry also builds the habit early, in children who then return as adults. The counter-argument is funding, and it's a fair one, museums need money for conservation and staff. Charging tourists while letting locals in free, as some countries do, seems like a reasonable compromise.

    • FCThe counter-argument is funding, and it's a fair one, museums need money for conservation and staff. This sentence explicitly names and validates an opposing argument, 'and it's a fair one', before addressing it, a more balanced and reflective structure than simply stating a fact. A 6.5 answer would state the same idea more flatly as 'Of course, museums need money for staff and to take care of the art', without explicitly acknowledging the argument as fair.Câu này nêu rõ và công nhận một luận điểm đối lập, "and it's a fair one", trước khi phản hồi nó, một cấu trúc cân bằng và mang tính suy ngẫm hơn là chỉ nêu một sự thật đơn thuần. Bài 6.5 sẽ phát biểu cùng ý đó một cách phẳng hơn như "Of course, museums need money for staff and to take care of the art", không thừa nhận rõ ràng rằng luận điểm đó là công bằng.
    • LRthe whole barrierThis phrase uses the more emphatic and specific noun 'barrier' rather than the vaguer 'a big problem' used at 6.5. A 7.5 answer intensifies this further to 'the entire barrier'.Cụm từ này dùng danh từ nhấn mạnh và cụ thể hơn "barrier" thay vì cách nói mơ hồ hơn "a big problem" được dùng ở band 6.5. Bài 7.5 tăng cường thêm nữa thành "the entire barrier".
    • GRAthe fee, even a small one, turns out to be the whole barrierThis sentence uses a parenthetical phrase ('even a small one') inserted mid-clause, a flexible structure adding emphasis without a separate sentence. A 6.5 answer would state this as a separate summary sentence, 'This shows that even a small ticket price is a big problem for them', and a 7.5 answer would use the adverb 'however modest' in the same position for a more formal register.Câu này chèn cụm từ "even a small one" vào giữa mệnh đề, một cấu trúc linh hoạt thêm sự nhấn mạnh mà không cần một câu riêng. Bài 6.5 sẽ phát biểu điều này thành một câu tổng kết riêng, "This shows that even a small ticket price is a big problem for them", còn bài 7.5 sẽ dùng trạng từ "however modest" ở cùng vị trí đó để có văn phong trang trọng hơn.
    Band 7.5

This reaches 7.5 through the idiomatic verb phrase 'waving locals through' and the closing personified clause 'conservation and staff don't pay for themselves', a livelier way of stating the funding argument.Bài này đạt 7.5 nhờ cụm động từ mang tính thành ngữ "waving locals through" và mệnh đề nhân cách hóa ở cuối "conservation and staff don't pay for themselves", một cách phát biểu luận điểm tài chính sinh động hơn.

For public collections, yes, and one small detail settles it for me. The museum near me runs one free Sunday a month, and that single day fills with local families who never turn up on paid days, the fee, however modest, turns out to be the entire barrier. Art a nation owns ought to be seen by the nation, not reserved for tourists and the comfortably off. Free entry also plants the habit early, in children who then return as adults without a second thought. Funding is the obvious counter-argument, and a legitimate one, since conservation and staff don't pay for themselves. Charging tourists while waving locals through, as some countries already do, strikes me as a sensible compromise.

A 7.0 answer would use the similar but less vivid 'The counter-argument is funding, and it's a fair one, museums need money for conservation and staff'.Câu này gọi luận điểm phản bác là "obvious" và "legitimate" trước khi biện minh cho nó bằng mệnh đề nhân cách hóa "don't pay for themselves", một cấu trúc tự tin, mang tính thành ngữ hơn cách diễn đạt đơn giản hơn của phiên bản 7.0. Bài 7.0 sẽ dùng cách nói tương tự nhưng kém sinh động hơn "The counter-argument is funding, and it's a fair one, museums need money for conservation and staff".

    • GRAconservation and staff don't pay for themselvesThis clause personifies abstract nouns with a colloquial idiom ('don't pay for themselves'), a more sophisticated construction than a literal statement of need. A 7.0 answer would state this literally as 'museums need money for conservation and staff', and a 6.5 answer would use the plainest version, 'museums need money for staff and to take care of the art'.Mệnh đề này nhân cách hóa các danh từ trừu tượng bằng một thành ngữ khẩu ngữ ("don't pay for themselves"), một cấu trúc tinh vi hơn một phát biểu trực nghĩa về nhu cầu. Bài 7.0 sẽ phát biểu điều này một cách trực nghĩa là "museums need money for conservation and staff", còn bài 6.5 sẽ dùng phiên bản giản dị nhất, "museums need money for staff and to take care of the art".

A thousand-year-old carving of a mother and child in the Cham museum told me more about how those people felt about family than any caption or history book, art carries the feeling of a time, and feeling is most of what life is. Paintings show what people valued, feared, wore and worshipped, and portraits reveal faces that are entirely modern in their boredom or pride. Looking closely at anything is itself a skill for life. • FCart carries the feeling of a time, and feeling is most of what life isThis is a reflective, almost aphoristic aside added onto the main clause, offering genuine interpretation rather than a plain fact. A 6.5 answer would not attempt this kind of reflective generalisation, stopping instead at the plain comparison with a book, while a 7.5 answer keeps a very similar structure, showing this device already sits near the top of the band range.Đây là một lời bình luận mang tính suy ngẫm, gần như mang tính châm ngôn, được thêm vào mệnh đề chính, đưa ra một sự diễn giải thực sự thay vì chỉ một sự thật đơn thuần.

A 6.5 answer would state the limitation as a short separate sentence with a plain list, 'like how a society really worked or who had power'.Câu dài này dùng một danh sách các mảnh câu ngắn không liên từ ("how a society worked, who paid, who suffered") gắn vào một cấu trúc nhấn mạnh ("What galleries can't teach is..."), theo sau là một mệnh đề kết quả với "so". Bài 6.5 sẽ nêu hạn chế này thành một câu ngắn riêng biệt với một danh sách giản dị, "like how a society really worked or who had power".

Agree, though the learning is indirect rather than instructive. A thousand-year-old carving of a mother and child in the Cham museum told me more about how those people felt about family than any caption or history book managed, art carries the feeling of a time, and feeling, arguably, is most of what life amounts to. Paintings betray what people valued, feared, wore and worshipped, while portraits reveal faces entirely modern in their boredom or pride. Looking closely at anything, for that matter, is itself a transferable skill. What galleries can't teach is the practical machinery of a society, how it worked, who paid, who suffered, leaving anyone schooled on art alone with a strange, beautiful, partial picture.

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain descriptive sentences and the simple closing contrast 'talent decides if other people like the result, but it does not matter for the person making it'.Đây là một bài mẫu 6.5 vì các câu văn miêu tả giản dị, và sự đối lập kết thúc đơn giản "talent decides if other people like the result, but it does not matter for the person making it".

I completely agree, and I saw a good example in my neighbourhood. When our neighbours repainted the walls together, some retired men with no artistic skill at all spent the whole weekend painting, laughing, and feeling proud of their crooked lines. The benefit was not about how good the painting looked. Making something gives people a feeling close to rest and helps build confidence, because making something shows you can do it. Art also helps people express feelings when words are not enough. So talent decides if other people like the result, but it does not matter for the person making it.

A 7.0 answer would add the comparative clause 'prouder of their crooked lines than I've ever been of a finished design', embedding a further comparison into the same sentence.Câu này liệt kê ba phân từ song song nối bằng dấu phẩy và "and" trong một cấu trúc khá giản dị. Bài 7.0 sẽ thêm mệnh đề so sánh "prouder of their crooked lines than I've ever been of a finished design", lồng thêm một sự so sánh vào cùng một câu.
    Band 7.0

This is a 7.0 answer because of the embedded comparative clause 'prouder of their crooked lines than I've ever been of a finished design' and the short, punchy closing pair of sentences for emphasis.Đây là một bài mẫu 7.0 vì có mệnh đề so sánh lồng ghép "prouder of their crooked lines than I've ever been of a finished design" và cặp câu kết ngắn, mạnh mẽ để nhấn mạnh.

I agree completely, and the alley proved it. When our neighbours repainted the walls together, the retired men with no artistic ability whatsoever spent a weekend absorbed, laughing and prouder of their crooked lines than I've ever been of a finished design, the benefit had nothing to do with the quality of the result. Making something puts a person into a state of attention that's close to rest. It builds confidence, since a made thing is evidence of capability. It gives feelings a shape when words fail, which is part of why art gets used in hospitals and with children who've been through hard things. Talent decides whether other people enjoy the result. It has nothing to do with whether the maker does.

    • FCthe benefit had nothing to do with the quality of the resultThis clause states the reflective conclusion directly within the same sentence as the anecdote, rather than as a separate flat sentence. A 6.5 answer would state this as its own simple sentence, 'The benefit was not about how good the painting looked', while a 7.5 answer inserts a similar clause but with the added adverb 'clearly' for extra emphasis.Mệnh đề này nêu kết luận mang tính suy ngẫm ngay trong cùng câu với câu chuyện, thay vì là một câu riêng, phẳng lặng. Bài 6.5 sẽ phát biểu điều này thành một câu đơn giản riêng, "The benefit was not about how good the painting looked", còn bài 7.5 sẽ chèn một mệnh đề tương tự nhưng thêm trạng từ "clearly" để nhấn mạnh hơn.
    • LRa state of attention that's close to restThis phrase is a more abstract, precise construction than the plain 'a feeling close to rest' used at 6.5, adding the noun 'attention' for extra specificity.Cụm từ này là một cấu trúc trừu tượng, chính xác hơn cách nói đơn giản "a feeling close to rest" được dùng ở band 6.5, thêm danh từ "attention" để có tính cụ thể hơn.
    • GRAthe retired men with no artistic ability whatsoever spent a weekend absorbed, laughing and prouder of their crooked lines than I've ever been of a finished designThis sentence embeds a comparative clause ('prouder... than I've ever been') directly into the list of participles, a more complex single-sentence structure than the plain three-item list at 6.5. A 6.5 answer would end the list with 'feeling proud of their crooked lines' with no further comparison attached.Câu này lồng một mệnh đề so sánh ("prouder... than I've ever been") trực tiếp vào danh sách các phân từ, một cấu trúc câu đơn phức tạp hơn danh sách ba mục giản dị ở band 6.5. Bài 6.5 sẽ kết thúc danh sách bằng "feeling proud of their crooked lines" mà không có sự so sánh nào thêm vào.
    Band 7.5

This reaches 7.5 through the vivid opening verb 'drops a person into' and the closing inverted sentence 'Whether the maker does is an entirely separate matter', a more sophisticated structure than a plain repeated negative.Bài này đạt 7.5 nhờ động từ mở đầu sinh động "drops a person into" và câu đảo ngữ kết thúc "Whether the maker does is an entirely separate matter", một cấu trúc tinh vi hơn một câu phủ định lặp lại đơn thuần.

I agree completely, and the alley made the case for me. When our neighbours repainted the walls together, the retired men with zero artistic ability spent a weekend thoroughly absorbed, laughing and visibly prouder of their crooked lines than I've ever been of a finished design, the benefit, clearly, had nothing to do with the quality of the result. Making something drops a person into a state of attention verging on rest. It builds confidence, since a finished thing stands as evidence of capability. It also lends feelings a shape when words fail, which is precisely why art turns up in hospitals and with children recovering from hard experiences. Talent decides whether other people enjoy the result. Whether the maker does is an entirely separate matter.

    • FCWhether the maker does is an entirely separate matter. This closing sentence uses a subject clause beginning with 'Whether...' functioning as the grammatical subject of the sentence, a more advanced construction than a plain negative statement. A 7.0 answer would state this more simply as 'It has nothing to do with whether the maker does', and a 6.5 answer would use the plainest version, joined with 'but' to the previous clause.Câu kết này dùng một mệnh đề chủ ngữ bắt đầu bằng "Whether..." Bài 7.0 sẽ phát biểu điều này đơn giản hơn là "It has nothing to do with whether the maker does", còn bài 6.5 sẽ dùng phiên bản giản dị nhất, nối bằng "but" với mệnh đề trước đó.
    • LRverging on restThis is a precise, less-common phrase ('verging on') describing a state approaching but not quite reaching rest, more distinctive than the plainer 'close to rest' used at lower bands.Đây là một cụm từ chính xác, ít gặp ("verging on") miêu tả một trạng thái đang tiến gần nhưng chưa hẳn đạt đến sự nghỉ ngơi, đặc sắc hơn cách nói đơn giản hơn "close to rest" được dùng ở các band thấp hơn.
    • GRAthe benefit, clearly, had nothing to do with the quality of the resultThis sentence inserts the parenthetical adverb 'clearly' mid-clause, interrupting the flow for emphasis, a more flexible construction than the plain version at 7.0. A 6.5 answer states this idea as its own separate, unembedded sentence.Câu này chèn trạng từ "clearly" vào giữa mệnh đề, ngắt mạch câu để nhấn mạnh, một cấu trúc linh hoạt hơn phiên bản giản dị ở band 7.0. Band 6.5

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain factual sentences and the simple closing contrast 'It does not mean treating them like heroes, just noticing their work'.Đây là một bài mẫu 6.5 vì các câu văn giản dị, nêu sự thật, và sự đối lập kết thúc đơn giản "It does not mean treating them like heroes, just noticing their work".

Yes, I agree that artists should be valued more by society. For example, the old sign painter who taught me how to letter by hand earned less money than a plumber his whole life, and now only a few of his students remember him. But every shop on his street looked more beautiful because of his work. Society only really values a few famous artists, but most working artists are not valued much at all. Valuing artists more means paying them fairly for their design or music work, and helping fund art education. It does not mean treating them like heroes, just noticing their work.

    • FCSociety only really values a few famous artists, but most working artists are not valued much at all. This sentence uses the simple connector 'but' to state a plain contrast, without any more literary or precise vocabulary. A 7.0 answer would rephrase this as 'Society values a handful of famous artists enormously and the working majority barely at all', using more precise quantifying language, and a 7.5 answer would use the verb 'lavishes' for a more vivid image.Câu này dùng liên từ đơn giản "but" để phát biểu một sự đối lập giản dị, không có từ vựng mang tính văn chương hay chính xác hơn. Bài 7.0 sẽ diễn giải lại thành "Society values a handful of famous artists enormously and the working majority barely at all", dùng ngôn ngữ định lượng chính xác hơn, còn bài 7.5 sẽ dùng động từ "lavishes" để có hình ảnh sinh động hơn.
    • LRearned less money than a plumberThis is a plain, literal comparison using basic vocabulary. A 7.0 answer would compress this into 'earned less than a plumber his whole life', and a 7.5 answer would restructure the whole sentence around a relative clause for a more literary effect.Đây là một sự so sánh giản dị, trực nghĩa, dùng từ vựng cơ bản. Bài 7.0 sẽ nén thành "earned less than a plumber his whole life", còn bài 7.5 sẽ tái cấu trúc toàn bộ câu quanh một mệnh đề quan hệ để có hiệu ứng văn chương hơn.
    • GRAthe old sign painter who taught me how to letter by hand earned less money than a plumber his whole life, and now only a few of his students remember himThis sentence joins two ideas with the simple connector 'and' in a fairly plain relative-clause structure. A 7.0 answer would use the more precise verb 'is remembered' in a compressed passive, and a 7.5 answer would restructure the whole sentence into a semicolon-linked comparison.Câu này nối hai ý bằng liên từ đơn giản "and" trong một cấu trúc mệnh đề quan hệ khá giản dị. Bài 7.0 sẽ dùng động từ chính xác hơn "is remembered" ở dạng bị động được nén lại, còn bài 7.5 sẽ tái cấu trúc toàn bộ câu thành một sự so sánh nối bằng dấu chấm phẩy.
    Band 7.0

This is a 7.0 answer because of the reflective opening qualifier 'with a note about what 'valued' actually means' and the closing idiomatic phrase 'noticing who made the things that make places worth living in'.Đây là một bài mẫu 7.0 vì có lời hạn định mở đầu mang tính suy ngẫm "with a note about what 'valued' actually means" và cụm từ mang tính thành ngữ ở cuối "noticing who made the things that make places worth living in".

Agree, with a note about what 'valued' actually means. The old sign painter who taught me to letter by brush earned less than a plumber his whole life and is remembered now only by the few of us he taught, and yet every shop in his street was more beautiful because of him, that kind of artist is undervalued in money and in memory. Society values a handful of famous artists enormously and the working majority barely at all. Valuing them more means paying fairly for design, music and craft rather than expecting it for free, funding art education, and treating an illustrator as a professional. It doesn't mean worship, it just means noticing who made the things that make places worth living in.

    • FCAgree, with a note about what 'valued' actually means. This opening uses a compact fragment structure, 'Agree, with a note about...', rather than a full sentence, immediately signalling a nuanced position. A 6.5 answer would open with the plain full sentence 'Yes, I agree that artists should be valued more by society', with no such nuance flagged up front.Phần mở đầu này dùng cấu trúc mảnh câu súc tích, "Agree, with a note about...", thay vì một câu hoàn chỉnh, báo hiệu ngay lập tức một lập trường tinh tế. Bài 6.5 sẽ mở đầu bằng câu hoàn chỉnh giản dị "Yes, I agree that artists should be valued more by society", không báo trước sắc thái tinh tế nào như vậy.
    • LRundervalued in money and in memoryThis phrase uses a neat parallel structure ('in money and in memory') to make an abstract point vividly, more distinctive than the plainer contrastive sentence used at 6.5.Cụm từ này dùng một cấu trúc song song khéo léo ("in money and in memory") để diễn đạt một ý trừu tượng một cách sinh động, đặc sắc hơn câu đối lập giản dị hơn được dùng ở band 6.5.
    • GRAThe old sign painter who taught me to letter by brush earned less than a plumber his whole life and is remembered now only by the few of us he taughtThis sentence uses a relative clause plus a compound predicate joined by 'and', combining two ideas about pay and memory into one flowing sentence. A 6.5 answer would present these as two separate ideas joined loosely by 'and now', and a 7.5 answer would use a semicolon to link an even more compressed pair of clauses.Câu này dùng một mệnh đề quan hệ cộng với một vị ngữ ghép nối bằng "and", kết hợp hai ý về tiền công và ký ức thành một câu trôi chảy. Bài 6.5 sẽ trình bày đây là hai ý tách biệt nối lỏng lẻo bằng "and now", còn bài 7.5 sẽ dùng dấu chấm phẩy để nối một cặp mệnh đề được nén chặt hơn nữa.
    Band 7.5

This reaches 7.5 through the idiomatic verb 'lavishes esteem' and the closing pair of short parallel sentences, 'It's not about worship. It's about noticing...', a compact rhetorical structure.Bài này đạt 7.5 nhờ động từ mang tính thành ngữ "lavishes esteem" và cặp câu song song ngắn ở cuối, "It's not about worship. It's about noticing...", một cấu trúc tu từ súc tích.

Agree, with a caveat about what 'valued' should actually mean. The old sign painter who taught me to letter by brush earned less across a lifetime than a plumber, and is remembered now only by the handful of us he trained, yet every shopfront on his street was the better for his hand, that's an artist undervalued both in money and in memory. Society lavishes esteem on a handful of famous names while the working majority go largely unnoticed. Valuing them properly means paying fairly for design, music and craft rather than assuming it should come free, funding art education, and treating an illustrator as a professional rather than a hobbyist. It's not about worship. It's about noticing who actually made the places worth living in.

I think AI art can be useful, but I do not think it will be valued the same as human art. For example, one of my clients loved a set of posters until he found out they were made by a computer in one minute. After that, he lost interest, even though the pictures did not change at all. What he really valued was knowing a real person made them with effort. AI can make a lot of good and useful pictures, but the value of art is also about who made it and why. A machine cannot copy that part, so human art will probably stay more special.

AI will produce enormous amounts of competent, useful, even beautiful imagery, and a lot of commercial illustration will probably go that way. A 7.5 answer keeps this same verb, showing it as an established feature at this level.Cụm từ này dùng động từ chính xác, mang tính kỹ thuật hơn "generated" thay vì cách nói đơn giản hơn "made by a computer" được dùng ở band 6.5.
    • GRAHe loved a set of posters until he learned they'd been generated by a machine in a minute, and his interest collapsed at that single wordThis sentence chains a subordinate 'until' clause with a coordinated result clause using the vivid verb 'collapsed', showing more advanced sentence-building than the plain version at 6.5. A 6.5 answer would state the two ideas as separate short sentences with plainer verbs.Câu này nối một mệnh đề phụ thuộc "until" với một mệnh đề kết quả song song dùng động từ sinh động "collapsed", thể hiện khả năng dựng câu cao cấp hơn phiên bản giản dị ở band 6.5.

He'd loved a set of posters until he discovered they were machine-generated in under a minute, and his enthusiasm collapsed at that single word, nothing about the images themselves had changed, yet what he'd prized all along was the sense of a person having meant them. AI will churn out vast quantities of competent, useful, even genuinely beautiful imagery, and swathes of commercial illustration will likely go that route. • GRAnothing about the images themselves had changed, yet what he'd prized all along was the sense of a person having meant themThis sentence uses the reflexive intensifier 'themselves' and the more literary verb 'prized' within a cleft construction, a slightly more polished version of the same structure used at 7.0.
