In many countries, young people are moving from rural areas to cities to study or to find work. What are the reasons for this? Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Every year, many young Vietnamese people leave rural areas, such as the Mekong Delta or the central coast, to study or work in big cities like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Although this movement causes some problems, I believe the advantages are greater than the disadvantages, especially for people's personal and career development.每年,许多越南年轻人离开湄公河三角洲或中部沿海等农村地区,前往胡志明市、河内等大城市求学或工作。尽管这种迁移带来了一些问题,我仍认为其优点大于缺点,尤其是在个人和职业发展方面。

One main reason for this movement is that cities have far more universities, jobs and companies than rural areas. A student from a rural province usually has more choices of university courses in Ho Chi Minh City, and it is easier to find work in fields like marketing or technology there. When I moved from Ben Tre to Ho Chi Minh City for a marketing job, I also noticed a better quality of life, because I could take the new metro train to work instead of sitting in heavy motorbike traffic every day, which saved me a lot of time and energy.这种迁移的一个主要原因是,城市拥有比农村地区多得多的大学、工作机会和公司。来自农村省份的学生在胡志明市通常有更多的大学课程可供选择,而在市场营销或科技等领域也更容易找到工作。当我从槟椥搬到胡志明市从事市场营销工作时,我也注意到生活质量有所提高,因为我可以乘坐新地铁上班,而不必每天在拥堵的摩托车车流中穿行,这为我节省了大量的时间和精力。

However, this migration also brings real problems. Competition for jobs is high, and room prices near the city centre keep rising, so many newcomers spend a large part of their income just on rent, often sharing small rooms with several roommates. Despite these problems, I still think the long-term advantages of moving to the city are bigger. Cities offer higher salaries, more training opportunities and better career growth, which are usually not available in rural areas. A student from a Mekong Delta province typically has access to far more degree programmes in Ho Chi Minh City, and graduates stand a much better chance of finding work in sectors such as marketing or technology there than in a small district town. Cities remain centres of innovation, higher wages and career advancement, offering training, networks and amenities rarely available in rural districts.
