题卡

Describe the perfect job for you

You should say:

  • What the job is
  • How you know about this job
  • What skills or training you would need for this job
  • And explain why it would be the perfect job for you

The 6.5 answer answers each cue-card point directly and in order with plain vocabulary ('a favour', 'much better now'), giving one straightforward reason without deeper reflection.6.5分的答案按顺序直接回答题卡上的每一点,用词朴素(如'帮个忙'、'现在好多了'),给出一个直白的理由,没有深入的反思。

The perfect job for me would be running my own small design studio here in Da Nang, working only for small family businesses like my uncle's restaurant in Hue.

I know about this kind of job because I helped my uncle redesign his restaurant's menu and simple signboard last year, just as a favour. It wasn't part of my normal work, but I enjoyed it more than most of my usual projects at the studio.

For this job, I would need most of the design skills I already have, like using design software and working with clients. But I would also need business skills I don't really have yet, such as managing money, finding new clients, and doing everything myself instead of having a team around me. I think I would need to take a short course in small business management.

This would be the perfect job for me because I could choose who I work for and really help small business owners who can't afford a big studio. My uncle's restaurant looks much better now, and more customers come in because of it. I would like to do that for many small shops around the city, not just big company clients.

  • FCFor this job, I would need most of the design skills I already have, like using design software and working with clients. The sentence directly answers one of the cue card's bullet points ('what skills would you need') with a concrete, itemised answer (software use, client work), following the cue card's structure closely rather than weaving the skills discussion into a more free-flowing narrative. This point-by-point, in-order development is simple and reliably coherent, though it stays close to the prompt's own wording rather than the kind of reframed, personally-angled response a 7.0 answer might produce. It fully and clearly answers what was asked, meeting the 6.5 bar for staying on topic.
  • LRa favour'A favour' is the simplest, most generic term for unpaid help done for someone informally, chosen over more specific framing (a personal project, pro bono work, a side job) that a higher-band answer might use to characterise the same menu-redesign work for the uncle. The word is doing minimal descriptive work — it just marks the task as informal and unpaid — which is sufficient for clarity but doesn't add nuance about the relationship or motivation, consistent with the 6.5 target of plain, functional vocabulary.'A favour'是表示非正式、无偿帮助某人时最简单、最泛化的用词,而没有选用更具体的表述方式(a personal project、pro bono work、a side job)——更高分段的答案可能会用这些来描述同样这份帮叔叔重新设计菜单的工作。
  • GRAMy uncle's restaurant looks much better now, and more customers come in because of it.Two separate observable outcomes — improved appearance and increased customers — are joined with a single 'and', with 'because of it' at the end providing the only causal link between the two clauses, rather than integrating cause and effect into one tighter structure. This is accurate and easy to follow, presenting the result of the redesign in the plainest possible cause-then-effect order, which matches the 6.5 grammar target of basic coordination over the more compressed subordinate structures a 7.0 answer might use.

The 7.0 answer supports its argument with one specific example (redesigning the old school's library signs) and a comfortable complex sentence about needing to 'learn a little about how schools are actually run', matching the 7.0 target of reason plus example.7.0分的答案用一个具体例子(重新设计母校图书馆的标牌)来支撑论点,并用一个运用自如的复杂句谈到需要'多了解一点学校实际是怎么运作的',符合7.0分'理由加例子'的目标模式。

The perfect job for me would be running a small studio that designs things for schools, like signs, timetables, and the information boards you see in the corridors, rather than working for big companies like I do now.

What the job would involve, basically, is taking the same design skills I already use and applying them somewhere that actually needs help. Most schools I've visited have confusing noticeboards and forms that even I find hard to understand, and I think that's a real problem, especially for younger students and parents who aren't confident readers.

I first thought about this seriously after helping my old secondary school redesign its library signs as a small favour last year. It wasn't a big project, but I noticed straight away how much calmer the space felt once things were organised clearly, and a few teachers told me students were finding books faster.

To do this properly, I think I'd need most of the design skills I have now, plus a bit more patience, since schools move much more slowly than companies and everything has to be approved by several people. I'd probably also need to learn a little about how schools are actually run, so I understand what teachers and students really need instead of just guessing.

I think it would be the perfect job for me because, unlike my current work, I'd get to see the direct effect of what I make almost immediately, in the corridors and classrooms themselves. Most of my projects at the moment disappear into an app that I never see anyone actually use, so this would feel more real and, honestly, more satisfying.

  • LRconfident readers'Confident readers' is a natural collocation that packages an idea — people who read fluently and without anxiety — into two words, rather than the more basic paraphrase 'people who are good at reading' a 6.5 answer would likely use. This kind of compact, topic-appropriate phrasing is the modestly flexible vocabulary Band 7.0 lexical resource is aiming for.'Confident readers' 是一个自然的搭配,把一个概念——那些阅读流利、没有焦虑感的人——打包进两个词里,而不是像6.5水平答案很可能会用的更基础的释义'people who are good at reading'。
  • FCI first thought about this seriously after helping my old secondary school redesign its library signs as a small favour last year.Rather than leaving the claim about confusing school signage general, the speaker anchors it in one specific, real example — redesigning library signs at their old school as a favour — and reports a concrete observed effect (students finding books faster). Supporting a general claim with exactly one short, real example is the Band 7.0 development pattern the descriptor specifies, as opposed to either no example (6.5) or a more elaborately extended one (7.5).
  • GRAI'd probably also need to learn a little about how schools are actually run, so I understand what teachers and students really need instead of just guessing. The sentence combines a purpose clause ('so I understand what teachers and students really need') with a trailing contrast ('instead of just guessing'), meaning the speaker doesn't just state a goal but also specifies what failing to reach it currently looks like. Packing a purpose clause and a contrastive tail onto the same sentence, while keeping both clauses accurate, is the comfortable range of complex structures Band 7.0 grammar expects.

The 7.5 answer reaches for abstract, precise vocabulary ('a captive audience') and a rare correlative structure ('the better I am, the fewer hours strangers lose'), closing with a deliberately clipped reflective pair of sentences.7.5分的答案追求抽象而精准的词汇(如'被迫聚集的观众'这种说法),并用了一个罕见的相关结构句式('我做得越好,陌生人浪费的时间就越少'),最后以一对刻意简练、带反思意味的句子收尾。

The perfect job for me would be running a small studio that designs only public services: the forms people fill in at the tax office, the results screen at the hospital, the ticket system in the vehicle registration office where I once waited five hours with my father.

What the job is, more precisely, is applying the skills I use now for companies to the things everyone has to use and nobody chose. Public design has a captive audience — you can't take your driving licence elsewhere — and so it's usually terrible, and the cost of that falls on the people with the least time and patience: the old, the poor, the frightened.

How I know about it is the hospital app my studio built last year. It was the first project where the users hadn't chosen the product, and the first where a good screen visibly changed someone's day rather than someone's sales. I've since discovered that a few countries have small government design teams doing exactly this.

What skills or training I'd need: most of the design skills I have, plus two I don't. One is research with people who aren't like me — I'd need to spend far more time in waiting rooms and far less in the studio. The other is patience with bureaucracy, since the hardest part isn't the design but persuading an office that's done something one way for thirty years to try another. I'd probably need to learn how government budgets and procurement work.

Why it would be perfect is that it's the only version of my job where the better I am, the fewer hours strangers lose. I've spent ten years making apps slightly more pleasant. I'd like to spend the next twenty making a queue shorter, a form clearer, and a screen an old man can read in his kitchen. The work is the same. The point is different, and the point is what I've been missing.

  • LRa captive audience'A captive audience' is a precise, pre-existing English collocation (normally used about people with no real alternative, like theatre-goers stuck in their seats) that the speaker applies here to citizens who have no choice but to use a badly designed government service. Reusing a fixed idiomatic phrase from a different domain to make an abstract point about public design, rather than explaining the same idea in plain words, is exactly the kind of natural figurative deployment the Band 7.5 descriptor rewards.'A captive audience' 是英语中一个精准的固定搭配(通常用来形容那些没有真正其他选择的人,比如被困在座位上的剧院观众),说话者在这里把它套用到那些别无选择、只能使用设计糟糕的政府服务的公民身上。
  • GRAthe better I am, the fewer hours strangers lose'The better I am, the fewer hours strangers lose' is a correlative comparative structure — the classic 'the X, the Y' pattern — which is genuinely uncommon in spontaneous spoken English because it requires holding two parallel comparative clauses in mind at once. Producing this pattern correctly and fluently, rather than falling back on a simpler 'if I'm good at this job, people will save time', is a strong, specific marker of the wide grammatical range the Band 7.5 descriptor singles out.'The better I am, the fewer hours strangers lose' 是一个相关比较结构——经典的 "the X, the Y" 句型——在自发的英语口语中确实相当罕见,因为它要求说话者同时在脑中并列驾驭两个比较分句。能够准确、流畅地产出这一句型,而不是退回到更简单的说法 "if I'm good at this job, people will save time",这是7.5分描述所特别指出的宽广语法范围的一个有力、具体的标志。
  • FCThe work is the same. The point is different, and the point is what I've been missing. The three short, clipped sentences at the very end — 'The work is the same. The point is different, and the point is what I've been missing.' — deliberately abandon the longer, flowing sentences used earlier in the answer, using repetition of 'the point' to land the final insight with rhetorical weight. This kind of controlled stylistic shift for emphasis, building to a genuinely evaluative conclusion about the speaker's career, goes beyond the reflective-but-more-conventional closing a 7.0 answer on the same topic would produce.结尾处三个短促、干净利落的句子——'The work is the same. The point is different, and the point is what I've been missing.'——刻意舍弃了回答前文使用的那种较长、流畅的句子,用 'the point' 的重复来以修辞上的分量凸显最后的领悟。

The plain closing claim "Most of these ideas disappear by the teenage years" states the outcome directly, without the added observation the higher bands attach about how the surviving ones began.

If you ask the children near my friend Vy's café, you get a list of whatever they can see from the street. A delivery rider, because the motorbike looks exciting; the woman who sells ice cream; a pilot; one boy who says he wants to 'own a dog' as a job; and a girl who wants to build bridges, like her father does. Young children choose jobs they can actually see, and adults they admire. By age ten or eleven, money and screens start to matter more, so singers and gamers appear. Most of these ideas disappear by the teenage years.

    • FCIf you ask the children near my friend Vy's café, you get a list of whatever they can see from the street.A plain, direct opening that states the method and the result in one simple sentence, without the hedge 7.0 adds or the more literary image 7.5 uses instead.
    • LRthe motorbike looks excitingPlain, functional phrasing for the appeal of the job, compared with 7.5's more vivid "the motorbike with the oversized box looks heroic".这是描述这份工作吸引力时朴素、实用的措辞,相比之下7.5版本用了更生动的说法 "the motorbike with the oversized box looks heroic"。
    • GRAYoung children choose jobs they can actually see, and adults they admire.A short, simple sentence with one "and" — correct and clear, but far less layered than the long sentence built on the same idea at 7.0 and 7.5.

The hedge "Honestly" and the closing "to be fair" frame the observation about children's job choices as a personal, considered reading rather than flat fact.

Honestly, if you ask the children who hang around my friend Vy's café, the answers are basically a map of what they can see from where they're sitting. A delivery rider, because the motorbike with the big box looks heroic; the ice-cream seller; a pilot; one boy who's decided he'll 'own a dog' as a career; and a girl who wants to build bridges because her father does. I'd say small children pick from the jobs that pass their window and the adults who impress them, more than from any real plan. By ten or eleven, money and screens start creeping in, so singers and gamers show up too. Almost none of it, to be fair, survives adolescence.

    • FCHonestly, if you ask the children who hang around my friend Vy's café, the answers are basically a map of what they can see from where they're sitting.A hedge-opened metaphor ("a map of what they can see") that frames the whole answer as personal reflection, more considered than 6.5's flatter opening statement.
    • LRpick from the jobs that pass their window and the adults who impress them, more than from any real planA more developed, reflective phrase than 6.5's plain account, though less pointed than 7.5's closing observation about street versus future.
    • GRAA delivery rider, because the motorbike with the big box looks heroic; the ice-cream seller; a pilot; one boy who's decided he'll 'own a dog' as a career; and a girl who wants to build bridges because her father does.A semicolon-chained list of five fragments, a more flexible structure than 6.5's fully verbed listing sentence for the same five children.

The closing observation "the choice says more about their street than about their future" turns the anecdote into a general claim the other bands don't make.结尾那句观察 "the choice says more about their street than about their future" 把这段轶事升华成了一个普遍性的论断,这是其他分数段没有做到的。

Ask the children who hang around my friend Vy's café and the answers read like a map of whatever passes their window. A delivery rider, because the motorbike with the oversized box looks heroic; the woman selling ice cream from a cart, for obvious reasons; a pilot; one boy who has decided he'll 'own a dog' as a career; and a girl who'll build bridges one day, because her father does. Small children choose from the jobs that pass in front of them and the adults who happen to impress them, and the choice says more about their street than about their future. By ten or eleven, money and screens creep in, and singers and gamers start appearing on the list. Almost none of it survives adolescence, and what little does usually began with one adult who let a child simply watch them work.

    • FCAsk the children who hang around my friend Vy's café and the answers read like a map of whatever passes their window.A confident, imperative-led opening that states the metaphor without a hedge, sharper than 7.0's hedge-softened version of the same image.
    • LRthe choice says more about their street than about their futureA precise, evaluative closing observation that upgrades 7.0's plainer "more than from any real plan" and 6.5's absence of this point entirely.
    • GRAA delivery rider, because the motorbike with the oversized box looks heroic; the woman selling ice cream from a cart, for obvious reasons; a pilot; one boy who has decided he'll 'own a dog' as a career; and a girl who'll build bridges one day, because her father does.A longer, more elaborated version of the same semicolon-chained list used at 7.0, with fuller detail in each fragment.

Mostly because of how they look, not how useful they are. My design studio got forty people applying for one job last year, while a ward hospital needed a night nurse for three months and only got two people. Money matters too — jobs that pay well attract more people. Working conditions matter, like hours and safety. TV shows also affect this — a drama about lawyers makes more people want to be lawyers. And parents often push their children toward jobs that were respected in their own generation.

    • FCMostly because of how they look, not how useful they are.A plain, direct topic sentence stating the answer's core claim immediately, simpler than 7.0's hedge-opened version and 7.5's unhedged but more idiomatic one.

    • GRAMy design studio got forty people applying for one job last year, while a ward hospital needed a night nurse for three months and only got two people.A single "while"-clause sentence — correct and clear, but simpler than the dash-linked version of the same contrast built at 7.0 and 7.5.

The hedge "Honestly" opens the answer as personal judgement, and the dash-linked clause turns the studio-versus-nursing numbers directly into a general claim.

Honestly, mostly visibility and status, far more than how useful the job actually is. My design studio received forty applications for a single post last year, while a ward hospital advertised for a night nurse for three months and got only two — the jobs people chase tend to be the ones that sound good, not the ones society most needs. Money obviously plays a role, since well-paid jobs attract crowds regardless of anything else. Conditions matter too — hours, safety, whether you're on your feet all day. Media, I'd say, shapes it heavily; every drama about doctors or chefs produces a small wave of applications. And parents keep pushing the jobs their own generation respected.

    • LRthe jobs people chase tend to be the ones that sound good, not the ones society most needsA more developed, natural phrase for the same contrast, less pointed than 7.5's "sound good in conversation" but well above 6.5's plain account.
    • GRAMy design studio received forty applications for a single post last year, while a ward hospital advertised for a night nurse for three months and got only two — the jobs people chase tend to be the ones that sound good, not the ones society most needs.A long dash-linked sentence turning the anecdote directly into a general claim, more complex than 6.5's plainer "while"-clause sentence on the same numbers.

The closing qualifier "whether or not it still deserves that respect" adds an evaluative twist to the point about parental influence that the other bands leave out.结尾的限定语 "whether or not it still deserves that respect" 给关于父母影响的这一点加上了评价性的转折,而其他分数段都没有这一层。

Mostly visibility and status, well ahead of how useful the job actually is. My design studio received forty applications for a single post last year, while a ward hospital advertised for a night nurse for three months and landed exactly two — the jobs people chase are the ones that sound good in conversation, not the ones a society most urgently needs. Money obviously plays its part, since well-paid roles attract crowds almost regardless of anything else. Conditions matter too: hours, safety, whether the job has you standing or sitting all day. Media shapes it more than people admit; every drama built around doctors or chefs sends a small wave of applications in that direction. And parents keep steering their children toward whatever their own generation once respected, whether or not it still deserves that respect.

    • FCMostly visibility and status, well ahead of how useful the job actually is.A confident, unhedged opening fragment that states the claim in one breath, sharper than 7.0's hedge-softened version of the identical idea.
    • LRthe jobs people chase are the ones that sound good in conversation, not the ones a society most urgently needsA more precise, idiomatic phrase ("sound good in conversation") than 7.0's plainer "sound good", with a stronger adverb ("urgently") sharpening the contrast.
    • GRAparents keep steering their children toward whatever their own generation once respected, whether or not it still deserves that respectA closing sentence extended with a concessive "whether or not" clause, a more flexible structure than 7.0's shorter, unqualified closing sentence on the same point.

The plain contrast "want excitement and status" versus "want stability and time" states the age shift directly, without the reflective idiom the higher bands build around the same idea.

Because what people want from work changes as their life changes. At twenty-two, my perfect job was working at a famous design studio with my name on beautiful projects. Now, at thirty-four, I just want something useful and calmer. Young people want excitement and status because they don't have any yet. Older people want stability and time, because they know what work really costs. Having children changes everything too — a perfect job becomes one that finishes early enough to see them. What seemed exciting at twenty can feel boring by fifty.

    • FCBecause what people want from work changes as their life changes.A plain, direct topic sentence stating the cause immediately, simpler than 7.0 and 7.5's near-identical but more reflective opening clause.

The hedge "Honestly" and the inserted "which I suspect is common" frame the personal shift in priorities as a considered, generalisable observation.

Honestly, because what people want from work shifts along with what they've already had. At twenty-two my perfect job was a famous design studio with my name attached to something beautiful; at thirty-four it's something calmer and more useful, and the shift really is from wanting to be seen to wanting to be useful, which I suspect is common. Young people value excitement, status and growth, mainly because they have none of it yet. In middle life, I'd say, people start valuing stability, meaning and time instead, having discovered what work actually costs them. Family changes everything too — a perfect job with children is simply one that ends early. What looked glamorous at twenty often looks exhausting by ten at night.

Because what people want from work shifts in step with what they've already had. At twenty-two my perfect job was a famous design studio with my name attached to something beautiful; at thirty-four it's something calmer with a clearer purpose, and the shift is really from wanting to be seen to wanting to be useful, which I suspect is fairly universal. The young value excitement, status and growth, mainly because they haven't had any of it yet. In middle life, people start valuing stability, meaning and time instead, having discovered exactly what work costs them. Having children changes everything else — a perfect job simply becomes one that ends by six. And experience strips away the illusions; you learn what the glamorous job actually feels like at ten at night. The perfect job at fifty is often the one you'd have found deadly dull at twenty.

I disagree, although money is almost never completely absent from the decision. My cousin chose a low-paid night job in a hospital because she wanted to help people directly. A friend of mine took a bank job he doesn't enjoy, just for the salary. Both choices are real. Money decides which jobs people can even consider, especially if they support a family. But after that, people choose based on interest, hours, location, or what they enjoy. I think people who say money is the only reason have never had to choose between money and something they wanted more.

    • FCI disagree, although money is almost never completely absent from the decision.A plain, direct statement of position joined by "although", simpler than 7.0's hedge-opened version and 7.5's unhedged but more compact one.

Honestly, I'd disagree, though money is rarely completely absent from the picture. My cousin chose an underpaid night ward because she wanted to be the person actually in the room; a friend of mine took a bank job he dislikes purely for the salary — both choices are genuine, and I'd say most people sit somewhere between the two. Money decides what jobs people can afford to even consider, especially once a family enters the picture. But within that limit, people choose for meaning, interest, hours, location, and who they'll be working alongside. To be fair, the idea that only money matters is usually held by people who've never had to choose between money and something they wanted more.

My cousin chose an underpaid night ward because she wanted to be the person actually in the room when it mattered; a friend of mine took a bank job he dislikes purely for the salary — both choices are genuine, and most people sit somewhere between the two. Money decides what jobs people can even afford to consider, and for anyone supporting a family, it's usually the first filter applied. But within that filter, people choose for meaning, status, interest, hours, location, and who they'll actually be sitting beside all day. The idea that only money matters, frankly, is mostly held by people who've never had to choose between money and something they wanted more.

Usually because their effort stopped making a difference. A designer at our studio had his three best ideas rejected without any real reason, and now he just does exactly what's asked, nothing more. He didn't become lazy — it just stopped feeling worth the extra effort. People lose motivation when they can't see the result of their work, or when nobody notices it, or when the goals keep changing. Bad management causes most of this. Sometimes it's simple tiredness after years of hard work. And sometimes life changes, like a sick parent or a new baby, and work just isn't the centre anymore.

    • LRit just stopped feeling worth the extra effortPlain phrasing for the designer's changed behaviour, compared with 7.0 and 7.5's sharper contrast "he didn't become lazy, he became rational".
    • GRAA designer at our studio had his three best ideas rejected without any real reason, and now he just does exactly what's asked, nothing more.A simple sentence joined by "and" — correct and clear, but plainer than the dash-linked contrastive sentence built on the same anecdote at 7.0 and 7.5.

The hedge "Honestly" opens the answer, and the dash-linked contrast "he didn't become lazy, he became rational" reframes the anecdote as a considered judgement.

Honestly, usually because effort simply stopped producing anything. A designer at our studio had his three best ideas rejected without any real explanation, and he now does precisely what's asked and not a line more — he didn't become lazy, he became rational about it. People lose motivation, I'd say, when they can't see the result of their work, when it goes unnoticed, or when the goal keeps shifting under them. Bad management is behind most of it. Some of it is plain exhaustion, since someone who's been sprinting for years eventually can't keep going. And some of it is simply life — a sick parent or a new baby moves the centre of a person's energy, and the job quietly feels it.

    • FCHonestly, usually because effort simply stopped producing anything.A hedge-opened claim that reads as personal reflection, more considered than 6.5's flatter version of the identical idea.
    • LRhe didn't become lazy, he became rational about itA sharp, analytical contrast that upgrades 6.5's plain "it just stopped feeling worth the extra effort" with a more precise psychological distinction.一个犀利、带分析性的对比,用更精准的心理层面的区分,升级了6.5版本朴素的 "it just stopped feeling worth the extra effort"。
    • GRAA designer at our studio had his three best ideas rejected without any real explanation, and he now does precisely what's asked and not a line more — he didn't become lazy, he became rational about it.A dash-linked sentence turning the anecdote into a pointed contrast, more complex than 6.5's plainer coordinated sentence on the same story.

Usually because effort simply stopped producing anything worth having. A designer at our studio had his three best ideas rejected without a reason ever given, and he now does precisely what's asked and not a line more — he didn't become lazy, he became rational. People lose motivation when they can't see where their effort has gone, when it goes unnoticed, when the goal keeps shifting under them, or when effort and reward quietly come apart. Bad management accounts for most of it. Some of it is plain exhaustion, since anyone who's been sprinting for years eventually can't. Some of it is that the work itself stopped meaning anything, which happens to almost everyone in a job that never changes. And some of it is simply life — a sick parent or a new baby moves the centre of a person's energy, and the job feels it.

The plain closing recommendation "a mix of some days at home and some in the office works best" states the conclusion directly, without the image of a closing door the higher bands add.朴素的结尾建议 "a mix of some days at home and some in the office works best" 直接说出了结论,没有更高分数段加上的那种关上的门的意象。

The advantages showed up for me while I was sitting in a hospital corridor — no interruptions, no commute, and actually the best design work I'd done in a year. The disadvantages appeared the month after, when I realised I'd stopped talking to people, and my ideas felt smaller because of it. Working from home gives you focus and freedom, and it suits people with families or long commutes. But it removes the small conversations where good ideas usually start. Junior staff suffer most, since they learn by watching others. I think a mix of some days at home and some in the office works best.

    • FCThe advantages showed up for me while I was sitting in a hospital corridorA plain, direct way of introducing the personal anecdote, simpler than 7.0's hedge-opened version and 7.5's more reflective "oddly enough".

    • GRAWorking from home gives you focus and freedom, and it suits people with families or long commutes.A simple sentence joined by "and" — correct and clear, but plainer than the longer two-clause sentence built on the same idea at 7.0 and 7.5.

The hedge "Honestly" and the aside "of all places" frame the hospital-corridor anecdote as a slightly ironic personal discovery.

Honestly, the advantages turned up for me in a hospital corridor of all places — no interruptions, no commute, work fitted around life instead of the other way round, and the best design I'd produced in a year. The disadvantages arrived the month after, when I realised I'd stopped talking to anyone and my ideas had quietly got smaller for it. Working from home gives focus, time and freedom, and it suits people with families or long commutes well. What it takes away, though, are the accidental conversations where most careers actually get built, and it blurs the line between work and rest until neither feels complete. Junior people, I'd say, suffer the most, since they learn largely by watching others.

    • FCHonestly, the advantages turned up for me in a hospital corridor of all placesA hedge-opened anecdote with an ironic aside ("of all places"), more reflective than 6.5's plainer statement of the same fact.
    • LRthe accidental conversations where most careers actually get builtA developed, natural phrase for informal workplace interaction, more vivid than 6.5's plain "the small conversations where good ideas usually start".一个更成熟、更自然的表达来描述非正式的职场互动,比6.5版本朴素的 "the small conversations where good ideas usually start" 更生动。
    • GRAWhat it takes away, though, are the accidental conversations where most careers actually get built, and it blurs the line between work and rest until neither feels complete.A two-clause sentence joined by "and", building the disadvantage into a single, layered statement rather than 6.5's two separate short sentences.

The closing image "a door that closes at six" gives the final recommendation a concrete, memorable shape the other bands' plainer conclusion lacks.

The advantages, oddly enough, turned up for me in a hospital corridor — no interruptions, no commute, work finally fitted around life instead of the reverse, and the best design work I'd produced in a year. The disadvantages arrived the month after, when I realised I'd quietly stopped talking to anyone and my ideas had shrunk for it. Working from home gives focus, time and freedom, and suits anyone with a family or a punishing commute. What it strips away are the accidental conversations where most ideas, and most careers, actually get built, and it blurs the line between work and rest until neither one is ever quite complete. Junior staff suffer most, since they learn largely by watching. The right dose, for most people, seems to be some days rather than all of them — and a door that closes at six.

The plain phrase "a problem for everyone else" states the core idea directly, without the sharper "friction" metaphor the higher bands use instead.

Mainly that one person's flexibility becomes a problem for everyone else. A colleague with fully flexible hours is never really at work and never really off it — messages arrive at midnight, then silence until ten in the morning, and the team can't find a time when everyone is available. Flexible hours can make work spread into every part of the day. They also make people less visible, which can hurt their chances of promotion. It's harder for junior staff, who need more structure to learn. And sometimes employers use 'flexibility' to mean unpredictable hours that suit the company, not the worker.

Partly agree, and it really depends on the type of work. Most young men from a village near my friend's hometown have moved to the city, because the only jobs at home are farming jobs — for them, moving isn't really a choice. But for someone in my field, it's different. I did some of my best work from a hospital corridor while I was away from my usual office, so remote work is making location matter less. Moving is still necessary for manual and service jobs, but less necessary for jobs done through a screen.

    • FCPartly agree, and it depends heavily on the kind of work involved. The same basic opener used at 7.0 but delivered without the hedge "Honestly", a slightly more confident, unqualified statement of the same nuanced position.
    • LRthe people most forced to move are usually those with the least to move with in the first placeA vivid, paradoxical closing phrase that upgrades 7.0's plainer, more procedural closing sentence about pressure rising and falling.
    • GRAFor someone in my line of work, the opposite increasingly holds true; some of my best design work has come from a hospital corridor, and remote work is steadily loosening the tie between a job and a place.A semicolon links a general claim to the personal anecdote supporting it, a compact structure matching 7.0's but trimmed of the softer "though it's increasingly" framing.
