Describe something you can't live without-not a mobile/cell phone or computer

You should say:

  • what this thing is
  • what you use it for
  • how long you have had it
  • and explain why you can't live without this thing

范文:6.5、7.0、7.5 三档

同一题目的三个版本,分别写到对应分数的真实水平——对比着看,能清楚看到分数之间到底差在哪里。

6.5 分

The answer relies on short, direct statements ('A computer is good for making things look finished, but it doesn't help me think — paper does') that state a plain contrast without much elaboration, typical of Band 6.5's clear but modest style.这段回答依靠简短直接的陈述句('电脑能让东西看起来完成度高,但它没法帮我思考——纸才可以')来给出一个简单的对比,没有太多展开,体现出Band 6.5清晰却朴素的风格。

The thing I can't live without is my sketchbook.

It's a plain notebook with thick paper, a bit worn now at the corners, that I carry in my bag almost every day. My colleague Minh actually gave it to me as a small gift when I started my job, and I liked it so much that I kept buying the same brand afterwards.

I use it mainly for sketching ideas for app designs before I put anything on the computer. When a client explains what they want, I draw quick boxes and arrows and rough screens on paper first, because it's faster than opening a design program, and I can think more freely. I also use it during meetings, just to write notes or doodle while people are talking.

I've had this current one for about eight months, but I've been using notebooks like it since university in Hanoi, so really it's been part of my work for years.

Why I can't live without it is that it's where my ideas actually start. A computer is good for making things look finished, but it doesn't help me think — paper does. If I lose my sketchbook, I feel a bit lost at work, almost unable to begin anything new. It's a simple object, but for my job, it's honestly the most important thing I own.

  • FCI use it mainly for sketching ideas for app designs before I put anything on the computer. The purpose of the sketchbook is stated directly in one sentence, sketching app-design ideas before using the computer, with no example of an actual sketch or client moment to illustrate it. That single, direct statement of purpose, without an accompanying concrete instance, is the Band 6.5 fluency pattern; a 7.0 answer would be more likely to follow this immediately with a specific remembered example.素描本的用途在一句话里就被直接陈述出来——在使用电脑之前先勾勒应用设计的想法——却没有配上任何实际速写或与客户互动的具体例子来加以说明。这种单一、直接的目的陈述,不搭配具体实例,正是Band 6.5的流利度模式;Band 7.0的答案更有可能紧接着补充一个具体的、被回忆起来的例子。
  • LRA computer is good for making things look finished, but it doesn't help me think — paper does."A computer is good for making things look finished, but it doesn't help me think — paper does" states a fairly interesting contrast using entirely plain, everyday vocabulary ("good for", "help me think"), with no more distinctive phrase attempted even though the idea itself is a genuinely thoughtful one. That gap between an interesting idea and plain language expressing it is characteristic Band 6.5, the content can be more sophisticated than the vocabulary carrying it."A computer is good for making things look finished, but it doesn't help me think — paper does"(电脑擅长让东西看起来完成度高,但它帮不了我思考——纸能)用完全简单、常见的词汇('good for'、'help me think')表达了一个相当有趣的对比,尽管这个想法本身颇具思考深度,却没有尝试用更别致的措辞来表达。这种有趣的想法与承载它的朴素语言之间的落差,正是Band 6.5的典型特征——内容可以比承载它的词汇更为精妙。
  • GRAIf I lose my sketchbook, I feel a bit lost at work, almost unable to begin anything new."If I lose my sketchbook, I feel a bit lost at work, almost unable to begin anything new" uses a basic first-conditional structure, accurate and natural but the most direct way available to express this hypothetical, without any embedding or a more varied conditional form. That correct-but-unambitious conditional is squarely within the Band 6.5 grammar range."If I lose my sketchbook, I feel a bit lost at work, almost unable to begin anything new"(如果我丢了素描本,我在工作中会感到有点迷失,几乎无法开始任何新东西)使用了基本的第一条件句结构,准确自然,但也是表达这种假设情境最直接的方式,没有任何嵌套或更丰富的条件句形式。这种正确却不算有野心的条件句,正稳稳落在Band 6.5的语法范围内。
7.0 分

The answer gives a clear reason ('mostly about freedom') backed by a concrete supporting example (the colleague who felt 'strangely trapped' without her bike for a week), linked with natural spoken hedging, matching Band 7.0's comfortable development.这段回答给出一个清晰的理由('主要是因为自由这两个字'),并用一个具体的例子来支撑(那位没有摩托车用了一周、感到'莫名被困住'的同事),再用自然的口语化缓冲语衔接起来,符合Band 7.0那种运用自如的展开方式。

The thing I can't really live without, other than my phone or computer, is my motorbike.

It's a fairly ordinary Honda, nothing special to look at, silver and a bit scratched along one side from a small accident a couple of years ago. My father helped me choose it when I first moved to Da Nang for work, mostly because he trusted the brand more than anything trendier.

I use it for pretty much everything. I ride it to the studio every morning, to meetings with clients, to the market, and most weekends down to the beach before it gets too hot. It's also how I get around when a friend needs picking up, or when I just want to clear my head after a stressful day at work, riding along the river with no particular destination in mind.

I've had this one for about seven years now, which is longer than I've kept almost anything else I own, including several phones and at least two laptops.

The reason I can't live without it is mostly about freedom, if that doesn't sound too dramatic. Da Nang isn't really built for walking everywhere, and buses don't go where I need to go at the times I need them, so without a motorbike I'd genuinely struggle to do my job properly, let alone see friends or get to the coast. There's also something about being outside, feeling the weather change on the ride home, that I'd genuinely miss if I only ever travelled by car or taxi. My colleague Linh once lent hers to a friend for a week and told me she felt strangely trapped the whole time, and I completely understood what she meant. It's not glamorous, but it's honestly closer to independence than anything else I own.

  • FCThe reason I can't live without it is mostly about freedom, if that doesn't sound too dramatic."If that doesn't sound too dramatic" is a natural spoken hedge, softening an abstract, slightly grand claim, that a motorbike represents "freedom", the way a speaker genuinely would in conversation, checking themselves rather than stating the claim flatly. That kind of self-aware softening is part of what makes Band 7.0 fluency sound unforced and natural rather than like a rehearsed statement."If that doesn't sound too dramatic"是一个自然的口语缓冲语,软化了一个抽象、略显夸张的说法——摩托车代表着"freedom"——就像说话者在真实对话中会做的那样,自我审视一下,而不是直白地抛出这个论断。这种有自我意识的软化处理,正是让 Band 7.0 流利度听起来自然不做作、而不像背诵稿的部分原因。
  • LRclear my head"Clear my head" is a natural, everyday collocation for relieving stress, more idiomatic than a literal phrase like "relax" or "feel less stressed", used here without any special emphasis, as if it were the obvious word choice. That kind of flexible, slightly figurative phrase used with total ease is exactly the Band 7.0 vocabulary profile."Clear my head"是一个自然的日常搭配,用来形容缓解压力,比"relax"或"feel less stressed"这种字面表达更具惯用语色彩,这里用得毫不刻意强调,仿佛这就是理所当然的用词选择。这种灵活、略带比喻色彩、却运用得毫不费力的短语,正是 Band 7.0 词汇画像的典型体现。
  • GRAwithout a motorbike I'd genuinely struggle to do my job properly, let alone see friends or get to the coastThe sentence builds an implied conditional ("without a motorbike I'd genuinely struggle...") and then extends it with the escalating "let alone" structure, adding a second, more extreme consequence on top of the first. That combination, conditional plus escalation, is a comfortably complex structure well within Band 7.0's range, more ambitious than the simple coordinated sentences a 6.5 answer would use to list the same two consequences separately.这句话先构建了一个隐含的条件句("without a motorbike I'd genuinely struggle..."),然后用递进结构"let alone"加以延伸,在第一个后果之上又叠加了一个更极端的第二个后果。这种"条件+递进"的组合,是一种恰到好处的复杂结构,完全落在 Band 7.0 的范围内,比 Band 6.5 的答案会用来分别列出这两个后果的简单并列句更有野心。
7.5 分

The extended simile - 'my friend Đức had to lead me by the sleeve to a repair shop like an elderly relative' - and the compressed, almost poetic closing metaphor about turning 'the blur into a place I can live in' show the vivid, idiomatic imagery typical of Band 7.5.那个延展开来的明喻——'我朋友阿德不得不像扶一位年长的亲戚那样,拽着我的袖子把我带去修理店'——以及结尾那句凝练、近乎诗意的隐喻,讲的是把'模糊一片的世界变成一个我能安住的地方',都展现出Band 7.5典型的生动、地道的意象运用。

The thing I can't live without is my glasses.

What they are: a thin pair with black frames, the current pair about three years old, though I've worn glasses since I was twelve, when a teacher in Hue noticed I was copying the board from the boy beside me. My eyes are quite bad — without glasses, everything past my hand becomes shapes and colours, and faces stop being faces at about two metres.

What I use them for is, honestly, everything, which is why the question is slightly strange for me. I work all day on details a millimetre wide. I ride a motorbike in a city where the traffic arrives from every direction. I read, I draw, I recognise my friends in cafés. I sometimes forget I'm wearing them, and then I take them off to clean them and the world goes soft and I remember.

How long I've had them, then, is twenty-two years in one form or another — perhaps eight pairs, each one slightly stronger than the last. I keep a spare pair in every bag I own, and one in the studio drawer, and one at my parents' house, because I've learned what happens without them. On a motorbike trip in the north last year, I stepped on my only pair at six in the morning in a guesthouse, and my friend Đức had to lead me by the sleeve to a repair shop like an elderly relative.

Why I can't live without them is not really about the objects. It's that they're the border between me and a world I can't use. Without them I can't work, can't travel safely, can't read a menu or a face. A phone I could give up with some pain. The glasses are the thing that turns the blur into a place I can live in, and I've never once put them on in the morning without a small feeling of relief.

  • FCThe glasses are the thing that turns the blur into a place I can live inThe metaphor recasts blurred vision as an uninhabitable state and the glasses as what makes the world 'a place I can live in' — an original image built specifically for this answer, not a stock phrase, which is what separates 7.5 reflection from mere description. A 7.0 answer would likely state the same idea literally ('without them I can't do anything'), while this line does the work of the whole cue-card point — why the object matters — in a single compressed sentence rather than spelling the reasoning out. It also closes the loop with the answer's opening claim that the question is 'slightly strange' for someone this dependent on glasses.
  • LRmy friend Đức had to lead me by the sleeve to a repair shop like an elderly relativeThe simile 'like an elderly relative' reframes a mundane inconvenience — a broken pair of glasses — as physical dependence, and it's extended rather than a single adjective, built through the concrete detail of being led 'by the sleeve'. This is a genuinely creative image rather than a memorised idiom, which is what the 7.5 lexical descriptor means by 'figurative touch if it fits the moment': it isn't inserted for effect, it's the most economical way to convey how helpless the speaker was without vision. A 7.0 answer would more likely report the same event plainly, missing the self-deprecating humour the simile adds.
  • GRAA phone I could give up with some pain.Fronting the object — 'A phone I could give up' instead of the neutral 'I could give up a phone' — throws contrastive stress onto 'phone' right before the sentence pivots to glasses, which the surrounding text treats as non-negotiable. This is a marked word order that a 7.0 or 6.5 answer would be unlikely to risk, since it departs from default SVO structure and only works if handled with confidence; it's exactly the kind of unusual-but-accurate construction the 7.5 grammar descriptor names explicitly. The payoff is rhetorical as much as grammatical: it sets up an implicit ranking of what the speaker values without a single explicit comparative word.把宾语前置——"A phone I could give up"而不是中性的"I could give up a phone"——在句子转向眼镜之前,把对比重音放在了"phone"上,而周围的文字把眼镜当作不可商量的东西。这是一种标记性的语序,Band 7.0 或 6.5 的答案不太可能冒险去用,因为它偏离了默认的主谓宾结构,只有在有把握地驾驭时才行得通;这正是 Band 7.5 语法评分描述明确点名的那种不寻常但准确的结构。它的收获既是修辞上的,也是语法上的:它在没有一个明确比较词的情况下,暗中确立了说话者的价值排序。

'Most unnecessary buying is emotional and quickly regretted' closes with a short, plain summary sentence.'Most unnecessary buying is emotional and quickly regretted' 以一句简短、朴素的总结句收尾。

I think people often buy things they don't need to feel something, not to have something. I own four spare glasses cases in colours I will never use, which I bought on days when I wanted the small feeling of buying something. People buy for comfort, status, boredom, or just the pleasure of the moment of buying, and the object itself doesn't really matter much. Advertising is also good at turning wants into needs. Social pressure makes people buy what their friends have. And sales make people afraid of missing a good deal. Most unnecessary buying is emotional and quickly regretted.

    • FCMost unnecessary buying is emotional and quickly regretted.A short final sentence restates the whole answer's point directly. The 7.5 answer instead extends the identical idea into a longer, more specific closing image involving a drawer, giving the conclusion more texture.一个简短的结尾句直接重申了整个回答的观点。相比之下,7.5分的回答把同样的想法延展成一个更长、更具体的关于抽屉的结尾意象,让结论更有质感。
    • LRthe small feeling of buying somethingPlain, generic phrasing. The 7.5 answer's 'the small lift of a purchase' uses 'lift' as a more precise, almost physical metaphor for the same emotional boost.这是朴素、笼统的措辞。7.5分回答中的 'the small lift of a purchase' 用 'lift' 这个词,为同样的情绪提升赋予了一个更精确、近乎具象的隐喻。
    • GRAI own four spare glasses cases in colours I will never use, which I bought on days when I wanted the small feeling of buying something.A single sentence with one relative clause — clear and controlled. The 7.5 answer instead uses a dash to attach a further explanatory clause about the case being 'the cheapest thing available', a more layered structure.这是一个只带一个定语从句的单句——清晰而克制。7.5分的回答则用破折号附加了一个进一步的解释性分句,说明那个眼镜盒是'the cheapest thing available',结构更有层次。
    7.0 分

'the case itself was almost incidental' reflects on the object's unimportance rather than just describing the purchase.'the case itself was almost incidental' 反思了物品本身的不重要,而不仅仅是描述这次购买行为。

Honestly, I'd say it's usually to feel something rather than to have something. I own four spare glasses cases in colours I'll never actually use, bought on days when I wanted the small lift of a purchase, and the case itself was almost incidental. To be fair, people buy for comfort, status, boredom, or simply the pleasure of the moment of buying — advertising is remarkably skilled at turning wants into needs, and social pressure makes people match what their friends and colleagues have. Sales create a fear of missing a bargain that didn't need to be caught in the first place. I'd say most unnecessary buying is emotional, brief, and regretted only later.

    • FCTo be fair, people buy for comfort, status, boredom, or simply the pleasure of the moment of buying'To be fair' introduces the general list of motives as a considered claim, a more developed transition than the plain listing sentence at 6.5.'To be fair' 把这份笼统的动机清单引入为一个经过思考的主张,比6.5分中朴素的列举句是更成熟的过渡。
    • LRadvertising is remarkably skilled at turning wants into needs'Remarkably skilled' adds an intensifier for emphasis, a step up from the plain 'good at' used at 6.5, though it's a shade less compact than the unadorned 7.5 phrase for the same idea.'Remarkably skilled' 加上了强调语来突出重点,比6.5分中朴素的 'good at' 是一种提升,不过比7.5分中更朴素直接的同类表达略微不那么紧凑。
    • GRAbought on days when I wanted the small lift of a purchase, and the case itself was almost incidentalA coordinated clause ('and the case itself was...') extends the main sentence with a reflective aside, a more integrated structure than the separate short sentence used for a similar idea at 6.5.一个并列分句('and the case itself was...')以一句反思性的插话延伸了主句,比6.5分中用于类似想法的独立短句结构更为融合。

Usually to feel something rather than to have something. I own four spare glasses cases in colours I'll never use, bought on days when I wanted the small lift of a purchase and a case was the cheapest thing available — people buy for comfort, status, boredom, or the pleasure of the moment of buying, and the object is almost incidental. Advertising is skilled at turning wants into needs; social pressure makes people match what friends and colleagues have; sales create the fear of missing a bargain that didn't need to be caught. And ease matters too: a purchase that takes one tap gets no thought at all. Most unnecessary buying is emotional, brief, and regretted only when the drawer won't close.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCAdvertising is skilled at turning wants into needs; social pressure makes people match what friends and colleagues have; sales create the fear of missing a bargain that didn't need to be caught.Three parallel clauses are joined by semicolons without any connecting word, a considerably more economical structure than the separate sentences the lower bands use to list the same causes.三个平行分句用分号连接,不用任何连接词,比低分段用来列举同样原因的分开句子要简洁得多。
    • LRregretted only when the drawer won't closeThis concrete, slightly comic image is far more vivid than the abstract 'quickly regretted' at 6.5 or 'regretted only later' at 7.0, turning an abstract claim into a physical, memorable detail.这个具体、略带喜感的意象,比6.5分中抽象的 'quickly regretted' 或7.0分中的 'regretted only later' 生动得多,把一个抽象的主张变成了一个具体、令人难忘的细节。

'More choice sounds like freedom, but it often feels like extra work' states the paradox in one plain contrastive sentence.'More choice sounds like freedom, but it often feels like extra work' 用一句朴素的对比句陈述了这一悖论。

I agree that people have too much choice when buying things today. Choosing my last pair of glasses proved this — I spent forty minutes in front of three hundred frames, and I felt less sure with every pair I tried. My grandmother's optician in Hue used to offer just two choices, and she was happy with either. More choice sounds like freedom, but it often feels like extra work. It also raises our expectations, because with so many options, we think the perfect one must exist somewhere. I think most people would prefer five good choices to a hundred confusing ones.

    • FCMore choice sounds like freedom, but it often feels like extra work.'But' signals the paradox directly, a clear and basic device. The 7.5 answer instead separates the same paradox into two short sentences with no connector, letting the contrast land more starkly.'But' 直接标示出这一悖论,是一种清晰而基础的手法。相比之下,7.5分的回答把同样的悖论拆成两个没有连接词的短句,让对比显得更强烈。
    • LRI felt less sure with every pair I triedPlain and literal. The 7.5 answer's 'growing less sure with each one' compresses the same idea into a participle phrase, a more economical and natural-sounding construction.朴素而直白。7.5分回答中的 'growing less sure with each one' 把同样的想法压缩成一个分词短语,是一种更简洁、更自然的表达。
    • GRAI think most people would prefer five good choices to a hundred confusing ones.A single comparative sentence closes the answer — clear and safe. The 7.5 answer instead extends a similar idea with 'someone honest to ask', adding a further, more specific element to the comparison.一个单一的比较句为整个回答收尾——清晰而稳妥。7.5分的回答则用 'someone honest to ask' 延伸了类似的想法,为这个比较增添了一个更具体的元素。

'the perfect one must apparently exist' inserts the hedge 'apparently' into an otherwise confident claim.'the perfect one must apparently exist' 在一个原本相当自信的论断中插入了限制语 'apparently'。

Agree, and choosing my last pair of frames proved it: forty minutes in front of three hundred pairs, growing less sure with each one, while my grandmother's optician in Hue used to offer two and she was happy with either. Honestly, more choice sounds like freedom and often feels like work — it raises expectations, since with so many options the perfect one must apparently exist, and it creates regret, since whatever you chose, another was possible. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCTo be fair, some choice is genuinely good, and nobody wants to go back to one kind of everything.'To be fair' introduces a genuine concession about the benefits of choice, a more balanced move than the single-direction argument at 6.5.'To be fair' 引出了一个关于选择好处的真实让步,比6.5分中单向的论证更为平衡。
    • LRit raises expectations, since with so many options the perfect one must apparently exist'Apparently exist' softens the claim with a hedge, a more considered phrasing than the flatter 6.5 equivalent, though less confident than the unhedged 7.5 version of the same clause.'Apparently exist' 用限制语让论断变得柔和,比6.5分中更平淡的对应表达更为审慎,不过比7.5分中同一分句不加限制语的版本略显不够自信。
    • GRAforty minutes in front of three hundred pairs, growing less sure with each one, while my grandmother's optician in Hue used to offer two and she was happy with eitherA 'while' clause links the writer's experience to the grandmother's directly within one sentence, a more integrated structure than a separate comparison sentence would be, matching the structure used at 7.5 almost exactly.一个 'while' 从句在同一个句子内把作者自己的经历和祖母的经历直接连接起来,比用单独一个比较句要更融合,这与7.5分中使用的结构几乎一致。
    7.5 分

'Research on this seems fairly clear' introduces outside evidence with a hedge before stating the finding directly.'Research on this seems fairly clear' 用一个带限制语的表达引入外部证据,然后再直接陈述发现。

Agree, and choosing my last frames proved it: forty minutes in front of three hundred pairs, growing less sure with each one, while my grandmother's optician in Hue used to offer two and she was happy with either. More choice sounds like freedom and often feels like work. It raises expectations, since with so many options the perfect one must exist, and it creates regret, since whatever you chose, another was possible. Research on this seems fairly clear: past a modest number of options, satisfaction actually falls. Some choice is genuinely good, and nobody wants to go back to one kind of everything. But the market has confused variety with value, and most people would trade a hundred options for five good ones and someone honest to ask.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCIt raises expectations, since with so many options the perfect one must exist, and it creates regret, since whatever you chose, another was possible. Two parallel 'it... since...' clauses are joined by 'and' into one balanced sentence, a tighter structure than the single sentence used for a similar idea at 6.5 or the hedged version at 7.0.两个平行的 'it... since...' 分句用 'and' 连接成一个平衡的句子,比6.5分中用于类似想法的单一句子或7.0分中带限制语的版本更紧凑。
    • LRpast a modest number of options, satisfaction actually falls'A modest number' and the intensifier 'actually' give this claim more precision and confidence than the plainer restatement at 6.5, drawing on the language of research rather than personal impression.'A modest number' 以及强调词 'actually' 让这个论断比6.5分中更朴素的复述更精确、更自信,借用的是研究性的语言,而不是个人印象。
    • GRAmost people would trade a hundred options for five good ones and someone honest to askThis closing clause adds a third, unexpected element ('someone honest to ask') to what could have been a simple two-part comparison, a more ambitious structure than the plain comparative sentence used to close the 6.5 answer.这个结尾分句为原本可能只是简单两部分比较的内容,加入了第三个出人意料的元素('someone honest to ask'),比6.5分回答结尾用的朴素比较句更有野心。

The three life stages (twelve, twenty, thirty-four) are told as three separate simple sentences.三个人生阶段(十二岁、二十岁、三十四岁)是用三个独立的简单句分别讲述的。

I think people value different things because their needs change over time. At twelve, I hid my glasses because they made me look different. At twenty, I bought fashionable frames because they made me look interesting. Now, at thirty-four, I just value the pair that doesn't slip when I am cycling. Young people value things that show who they are, because they are still building their identity. In middle age, people value things that save time or help their family. Older people usually value comfort, health, and things connected to memory. Life stage and money also decide what people value most.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCAt twelve, I hid my glasses because they made me look different. At twenty, I bought fashionable frames because they made me look interesting. Two nearly identical sentence patterns are repeated back to back, a basic but functional cohesive device. The 7.5 answer instead fuses all three life stages into one sentence using dashes, a considerably tighter structure.两个几乎相同的句式被连续重复使用,是一种基础但实用的衔接手法。7.5分的回答则用破折号把三个人生阶段全部融合进一个句子里,结构紧凑得多。
    • LRI just value the pair that doesn't slip when I am cyclingPlain and literal. The 7.5 answer's 'the pair that doesn't slip when I'm sweating on a bicycle' adds the sensory detail 'sweating', making the same claim more vivid.朴素而直白。7.5分回答中的 'the pair that doesn't slip when I'm sweating on a bicycle' 加上了 'sweating' 这个感官细节,让同样的论断更加生动。
    • GRALife stage and money also decide what people value most.A short final sentence adds a new factor. The 7.5 answer instead expands this into two parallel clauses about a person with no money and no time, a more developed structure for the same idea.一个简短的结尾句添加了一个新因素。7.5分的回答则把这一点扩展成两个关于没钱和没时间的人的平行分句,是同一想法的更成熟结构。

'same object, three completely different values, one person' compresses the three life stages into a three-part noun phrase.'same object, three completely different values, one person' 把三个人生阶段压缩成一个三部分的名词短语。

Honestly, I think it's because what people need from things changes at every stage. At twelve I hid my glasses because they made me look different; at twenty I bought fashionable frames because they made me look interesting; at thirty-four I just value the pair that doesn't slip when I'm sweating on a bicycle — same object, three completely different values, one person. To be fair, young people value what signals identity and belonging, since they're building both, while people in middle life value what saves time and serves the family. Older people, meanwhile, tend to value comfort and the things that hold memory. I'd say experience just teaches us what actually matters.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCsame object, three completely different values, one personThis three-part noun phrase, with no verb, summarises the whole preceding sentence in a single beat, a more economical device than the plain listing sentences used at 6.5.这个不带动词的三部分名词短语,在一拍之内总结了前面整个句子,比6.5分中朴素的列举句更为简洁。
    • LRat thirty-four I just value the pair that doesn't slip when I'm sweating on a bicycle'Sweating on a bicycle' adds a sensory detail beyond the plain 'cycling' at 6.5, though it's identical to the phrase used at 7.5, showing this specific image is accessible from 7.0 upward.'Sweating on a bicycle' 比6.5分中朴素的 'cycling' 增添了一个感官细节,不过它与7.5分使用的短语完全相同,说明这个具体的意象从7.0分起就可以出现。
    • GRAAt twelve I hid my glasses because they made me look different; at twenty I bought fashionable frames because they made me look interesting; at thirty-four I just value the pair that doesn't slip when I'm sweating on a bicycleThree parallel clauses are joined by semicolons into one long sentence, a considerably more ambitious structure than the three separate sentences used at 6.5, matching the 7.5 structure almost exactly but with an added 'just'.三个平行分句用分号连接成一个长句,比6.5分中三个独立句子的结构要有野心得多,几乎与7.5分的结构一致,只是多加了一个 'just'。

Older people value comfort, health, and the things that hold memory. Circumstances drive it too: a person with no money values what's cheap, a person with no time values what's fast. And experience teaches what actually matters, which is usually less than we thought and closer to home.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCCircumstances drive it too: a person with no money values what's cheap, a person with no time values what's fast.A colon introduces a parallel two-part illustration of 'circumstances', a more integrated device than the short standalone final sentence used at 6.5 to introduce a similar idea.冒号引出了一个关于 'circumstances' 的平行两部分举例,比6.5分中用来引入类似想法的简短独立结尾句更为融合。

I agree that society is becoming too materialistic, but people were always somewhat materialistic. A luxury eyewear shop has opened where my old optician used to be, and it sells frames by brand and price, not by whether you can actually see through them. This shows how objects are now valued for what they say about us, not what they do. Advertising and social media have turned buying things into a kind of identity for many people. My grandmother's generation was also materialistic, but they had fewer things and valued them more carefully. I think the real change is how quickly we now want and throw things away.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI agree that society is becoming too materialistic, but people were always somewhat materialistic. The concession 'but people were always somewhat materialistic' opens right after the position statement, a fairly basic structure. The 7.5 answer instead delays this same concession to its own sentence beginning with 'The caveat is', giving it more standalone weight.让步句 'but people were always somewhat materialistic' 紧跟在立场陈述之后就出现了,这是一种相当基础的结构。7.5分的回答则把同样的让步延后,放到一个以 'The caveat is' 开头的独立句子里,让它显得更有分量。

Agree, with a caveat about what came before. A luxury eyewear shop has opened where my old optician used to be, and it sells frames by brand and price rather than by whether you can see through them, which seems like a small picture of the larger change — objects valued for what they say rather than what they do. To be fair, advertising, social media and easy credit have turned consumption into identity for a lot of people, and possessions into a kind of scoreboard. The caveat is that my grandmother's generation was intensely material too — they just had less material, and valued it more carefully. Disposable materialism is the modern version, and it's worse.Repeating 'materialism' across two short sentences creates a deliberate rhetorical echo, a more polished closing device than the single explanatory sentence used at 6.5 or 7.0.在两个短句中重复 'materialism' 制造出一种刻意的修辞回响,比6.5分或7.0分中单一的解释性结尾句更精致。

'I think people who let things go easily trust that the memory survives without the object' closes with a generalisation about other people.'I think people who let things go easily trust that the memory survives without the object' 以一个关于其他人的概括性判断收尾。

I think some people find it hard to throw things away because the object holds a memory for them. I have a box in my wardrobe with eight old pairs of glasses that are useless to anyone, but I can't get rid of them because each pair has a year of my life attached to it. Some people keep things because they are afraid they might need them later, especially if they grew up without much money. Some people keep things because of the money already spent, or because the object belonged to someone who has died. I think people who let things go easily trust that the memory survives without the object.

    • FCI think people who let things go easily trust that the memory survives without the object.A single closing sentence generalises from the box example. The 7.5 answer instead adds a further short sentence turning the generalisation back onto the speaker, for a more personal close.一个单一的结尾句从盒子的例子中得出一般性结论。7.5分的回答则又加了一句简短的话,把这个概括反过来落回说话者自己身上,营造出更个人化的结尾。
    • LReach pair has a year of my life attached to itPlain and literal. The 7.5 answer's 'each has a year of my face attached' is a slightly stranger, more specific image, giving the same idea more particularity.朴素而直白。7.5分回答中的 'each has a year of my face attached' 是一个略显奇特、更具体的意象,让同样的想法更具个体性。
    • GRASome people keep things because they are afraid they might need them later, especially if they grew up without much money.A single 'because... especially if' sentence — clear and controlled. The 7.5 answer instead separates similar reasons into short standalone sentences, a more fragmented, rhetorical structure.一个单一的 'because... especially if' 句子——清晰而克制。7.5分的回答则把类似的理由拆成一个个简短的独立句子,结构更破碎,也更具修辞性。

'the object holds the memory, and throwing it away feels like throwing that away too' repeats 'throwing... away' deliberately for effect.'the object holds the memory, and throwing it away feels like throwing that away too' 有意地重复了 'throwing... away',以取得修辞效果。

Honestly, I'd say it's because the thing has become a container for something else. I have a box in my wardrobe holding eight old pairs of glasses that are useless to anyone, and I can't discard them because each one has a year of my face attached — the object holds the memory, and throwing it away feels like throwing that away too. To be fair, some people keep things out of fear, since it might be needed and their childhood taught them scarcity, as my grandmother's did. Others hold on because the object belonged to someone who's gone, or simply because they never learned to decide, so keeping becomes the default option.

    • FCTo be fair, some people keep things out of fear, since it might be needed and their childhood taught them scarcity, as my grandmother's did.'To be fair' introduces a further reason as a considered addition, a more developed move than the plain 'because' sentence at 6.5.'To be fair' 把又一个理由引入为一个经过思考的补充,比6.5分中朴素的 'because' 句子是更成熟的过渡。
    • LReach one has a year of my face attached'A year of my face attached' is a precise, slightly strange image shared with the 7.5 answer, more specific than the plainer 'a year of my life' at 6.5.'A year of my face attached' 是一个精确、略显奇特的意象,与7.5分的回答共用,比6.5分中更朴素的 'a year of my life' 更具体。
    • GRAthe object holds the memory, and throwing it away feels like throwing that away tooThe deliberate repetition of 'throwing... away' across the clause is a controlled rhetorical device, more ambitious than the plain vocabulary at 6.5, though the 7.5 version uses the identical construction without 'too', showing an even tighter economy.'throwing... away' 在分句中的刻意重复,是一种有控制的修辞手法,比6.5分中朴素的用词更有野心,不过7.5分的版本使用了相同的结构却省去了 'too',显示出更进一步的简洁。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI don't yet, and the box knows it.This short personifying final sentence turns the whole answer's generalisation back onto the speaker in just six words, a far more economical and characterful close than the plain generalising sentence used at 6.5.这个简短、拟人化的结尾句,只用六个词就把整个回答的概括反过来落回说话者自己身上,比6.5分中朴素的概括性结尾句要简洁、有个性得多。
    • LReach has a year of my face attachedShared closely with the 7.0 phrase, but here it closes the sentence directly rather than being followed by 'too', giving it slightly more weight as the sentence's final image.与7.0分的短语几乎相同,但在这里它直接作为句子的结尾,而不是后面再跟一个 'too',这让它作为句子最后意象时显得分量更重一些。

Some hold on because the object belonged to someone gone.Three short sentences, each opening with 'Some', build a list through repetition rather than coordination within one sentence, a more rhetorical, higher-risk structure than the single combined sentence used for similar content at 6.5.三个都以 'Some' 开头的短句,通过重复而不是在一个句子内并列的方式构建出一份列举,比6.5分中用于类似内容的单一合并句更具修辞性,也更冒险。

I think young people want the latest technology because it is a way to belong to a group. Two juniors at my studio waited outside overnight for a new phone that only had one new feature, and when I asked why, they said everyone in their group would have it by Monday. For young people, technology is where a lot of their social life happens, so owning the newest one shows they are current. There is also real pleasure in trying new tools, and young people are quick to find new uses for them. Marketing also targets them directly. I think it is more about belonging than showing off.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI think it is more about belonging than showing off.A short closing sentence states the conclusion plainly. The 7.5 answer instead closes with a more compact and slightly paradoxical version of the same idea about cost.一个简短的结尾句朴素地陈述了结论。7.5分的回答则以一个更紧凑、略带悖论意味的版本来收尾,表达关于代价的同样想法。

To be fair, there's also genuine pleasure in new tools, and young people are quickest to find uses for them. Status plays a part too, since a phone is the most visible thing a twenty-year-old owns. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCTo be fair, there's also genuine pleasure in new tools, and young people are quickest to find uses for them.'To be fair' introduces a genuine additional motive, a more developed move than the single-cause explanation implied at 6.5.'To be fair' 引出了一个真实的额外动机,比6.5分中暗示的单一原因解释是更成熟的过渡。

I think the media influences buying decisions more than people realise. An actor in a popular series wore thin round glasses one season, and within a month every optician's window in Da Nang was full of them, worn by people who would swear they chose the style themselves. The media shapes what looks normal and desirable, and people choose from inside that idea without noticing. • LRthe media shapes what looks normal, desirable and currentA three-item list ('normal, desirable and current') is more precise than the plain two-item list at 6.5, matching the list used at 7.5 exactly.三项列举('normal, desirable and current')比6.5分中朴素的两项列举更精确,与7.5分使用的列举完全相同。
    • GRAworn by people who'd swear they'd chosen the style themselves — the media shapes what looks normal, desirable and current, and people choose from inside that frameA dash introduces a generalisation extending the specific example into an abstract claim within one sentence, a more integrated structure than the separate sentences used at 6.5 for example and generalisation.破折号引出了一个概括性论断,在一个句子内把具体的例子延伸成一个抽象的主张,比6.5分中把例子和概括分成两个独立句子的结构更为融合。
    7.5 分

The four short parallel sentences 'Advertising does it directly. Films... News... Social media...' build a list through repetition rather than coordination.四个平行的短句'Advertising does it directly. Films... News... Social media...'通过重复而不是并列来构建这份列举。

More than people admit and usually without their noticing. An actor in a popular series wore thin round glasses one season, and within a month every optician's window in Da Nang was full of them, worn by people who'd swear they chose the style themselves — the media shapes what looks normal, desirable and current, and people choose from inside that frame. Advertising does it directly. Films, series and influencers do it sideways, by showing a life and letting the objects in it become wants. Reviews and rankings decide which options people even consider. News creates panics and rushes. Social media adds the constant sight of what others have. Almost nobody thinks they're influenced. Almost everyone buys what the season showed them.

    • FCAdvertising does it directly. Films, series and influencers do it sideways, by showing a life and letting the objects in it become wants. Reviews and rankings decide which options people even consider. News creates panics and rushes. Social media adds the constant sight of what others have.Four short sentences, each naming a different channel, build the list through repeated sentence openings rather than coordination within one sentence, a considerably more rhetorical and confident structure than the single coordinated sentence used at 6.5.四个短句,每一句都点出一种不同的渠道,通过重复句子开头而不是在一句话内并列来构建这份列举,比6.5分中单一的并列句结构更具修辞性、也更自信。
    • LRthe media shapes what looks normal, desirable and currentThis three-item list matches the 7.0 version closely, but here it's followed immediately by four short illustrative sentences rather than a single further clause, showing the same vocabulary given more room to do its work.这个三项列举与7.0分的版本非常接近,但在这里它紧接着跟了四个简短的举例句,而不是再加一个分句,说明同样的词汇被赋予了更大的发挥空间。
    • GRAAlmost nobody thinks they're influenced. Almost everyone buys what the season showed them. Two short parallel sentences, both opening with 'Almost', replace the single 'but'-joined sentence used at 6.5, letting the irony of the contrast stand without any connecting word at all.两个都以 'Almost' 开头的平行短句,取代了6.5分中用 'but' 连接的单一句子,让这种对比中的反讽意味完全不借助任何连接词就能凸显出来。
