The video I want to talk about is a short clip of an old woman making bánh bèo at a stall near Han Market. I watched it on my phone one Saturday night, at home in my apartment, after I finished work.

The video was about her hands. She makes the little rice cakes so fast, filling each tiny bowl, steaming them, and topping them with shrimp and crispy pork skin, one after another without stopping. It only lasts about two minutes, but you can watch her make maybe thirty cakes in that time.

I found out about it because my friend Khoa sent it to me on Zalo. He knows I like watching cooking videos, and he said it reminded him of my uncle's restaurant kitchen in Hue.

I thought it was interesting mainly because of her speed and skill. She has clearly made these cakes for many years, and her hands move without her even looking. I also liked that there was no music or talking, just the sounds of the kitchen. It made me want to visit that stall myself, and it made me appreciate how much practice is behind something that looks so simple.

I watched it on a rainy evening last November, sitting on my balcony in Da Nang. I only planned to watch a few minutes before bed, but I got completely caught up in it and stayed up much later than I meant to.

The video was basically about fixing something that looked beyond saving. The typewriter arrived covered in rust, with keys that wouldn't move at all. The man, and you never actually see his face, took the whole machine apart piece by piece, cleaned everything by hand, and then slowly put it back together.
