Short, plain statements like 'It was not easy at all' and 'My first ten cakes were failures' keep the description clear but simple, which is characteristic of Band 6.5.像'It was not easy at all'(一点也不容易)和'My first ten cakes were failures'(我做的头十个蛋糕全都失败了)这样简短朴素的句子,让描述清楚但简单,这是6.5分的典型特征。

The older person I want to talk about is my grandmother, who lives in Hue. The skill she taught me was how to make banh beo, a small steamed rice cake that is famous in our hometown.

I learned this when I was about sixteen, during a summer holiday. My grandmother makes banh beo every week to sell to neighbours, and one day I asked if I could help her instead of just eating them. She said yes, but she didn't explain much. She just showed me once and then watched me try.

It was not easy at all. The rice batter has to be the right thickness, and you steam it in tiny dishes for exactly the right time, or the cake breaks when you take it out. My first ten cakes were failures. My grandmother didn't get angry, she just told me to do it again. After about two weeks of practising almost every day, my cakes finally looked like hers.

This skill has been useful because now I can cook something from my hometown wherever I live, even in Da Nang. Sometimes I make banh beo for my friends, and it always makes me think of my grandmother's kitchen. It's a small skill, but it connects me to home.

  • LRMy first ten cakes were failures.'Failures' is a common, everyday noun used in its most literal sense, with no attempt at a more specific or colourful alternative like 'disasters' or 'flops' that a 7.5 answer might reach for. That plainness matches the Band 6.5 lexical target precisely, which calls for 'everyday, high-frequency words' and explicitly warns against idioms or clever phrasing at this tier. The specific number 'ten' does add a small concrete detail that keeps the sentence from being purely abstract, which is enough to make the statement feel personal and credible without needing more advanced vocabulary.'Failures'是一个常见的日常名词,按最字面的意思使用,没有尝试用像'disasters'或'flops'这样更具体或更生动的替代词——那是7.5分答案可能会去追求的。这种朴实恰好精准地对应了6.5分词汇目标,该目标要求"日常高频词汇",并明确警告在这一档不要使用习语或巧妙的措辞。具体的数字'ten'确实增添了一个小小的具体细节,让句子不至于完全抽象,这足以让这句话显得个人化、可信,而不需要更高阶的词汇。
  • FCIt was not easy at all.The sentence states the difficulty of learning to make banh beo in the plainest possible terms, without elaborating on why or giving a figurative comparison, before the following sentences fill in the specific technical challenges. That kind of simple, direct topic sentence — stating the point and then supporting it with concrete detail — is exactly the 'answer directly, stay on topic' approach the Band 6.5 fluency target expects, rather than the more woven-in evaluative style a 7.5 answer would use. It's a basic but effective coherence device, clearly signalling that a description of difficulty is coming next.这句话用最朴实的措辞陈述了学做越南薄饼(bánh bèo)的困难,没有展开解释原因,也没有给出比喻性的比较,然后后面的句子才补充具体的技术难点。这种简单直接的主题句——先给出要点,再用具体细节支撑——正是6.5分流利度目标所期待的"直接作答、紧扣主题"的方式,而不是7.5分答案会采用的那种更融会贯通的评价式风格。这是一个基本但有效的连贯性手段,清楚地预示接下来将会描述这个难点。
  • GRAAfter about two weeks of practising almost every day, my cakes finally looked like hers.Fronting the time phrase 'After about two weeks of practising almost every day' before the main clause is a small but genuine grammatical choice, since the more basic version would simply place it at the end: 'my cakes finally looked like hers after two weeks.' That fronted structure is the kind of modest variety the Band 6.5 grammar target expects — 'a few basic complex ones' beyond plain simple sentences — without attempting the more elaborate embedded clauses a 7.5 answer would use. The specific detail of 'almost every day' also grounds the improvement in real, sustained effort rather than a vague claim of getting better.把时间短语'After about two weeks of practising almost every day'前置到主句之前,是一个虽小但确实存在的语法选择,因为更基础的版本会简单地把它放在句末:"两周后我做的蛋糕终于看起来像她做的了。"这种前置结构正是6.5分语法目标所期待的那种适度的多样性——在纯简单句之外加上"少量基本复合句"——而没有尝试7.5分答案会用的那种更精细的嵌套从句。'almost every day'这一具体细节也把进步落实在真实、持续的努力之上,而不是一句含糊的"变得更好了"。
7.0 分

The relative clause 'which meant I had to pay close attention every single time' extends a simple observation into a fuller explanation, and the natural collocation 'wasting my pocket money' shows comfortable, flexible word choice typical of Band 7.0.定语从句'which meant I had to pay close attention every single time'(这意味着我每次都得非常专注)把一个简单的观察扩展成了更完整的解释,而自然搭配'wasting my pocket money'(浪费零花钱)展现出7.0分典型的从容、灵活的用词选择。

The older person I want to talk about is a man called Mr Tan, who used to run a tiny bicycle repair stall near where I grew up, and the skill he taught me was how to fix a punctured tyre and adjust brakes properly.

I was about fourteen when I started hanging around his stall after school, mostly because my own bike kept breaking down and I got tired of paying him every single time. One afternoon he just handed me a spanner and said I might as well learn to do it myself instead of wasting my pocket money.

It wasn't easy at first, to be honest. Finding the exact spot where the tyre was leaking took me ages, because you have to submerge the tube in water and watch carefully for tiny bubbles, and my first few patches kept coming loose because I hadn't roughened the rubber enough before gluing it. Mr Tan didn't really explain things in detail, he mostly just watched and corrected me when I got something wrong, which meant I had to pay close attention every single time.

After a couple of months of practising on my own bike and occasionally my friends', I finally got reasonably confident, and I could fix a puncture in about ten minutes without really thinking about it.

This skill has been genuinely useful for me since then. I still ride a bike sometimes now, and whenever something goes wrong, I can usually sort it out myself rather than paying someone else or waiting around at a shop. More than that, though, I think Mr Tan taught me that you learn things properly by doing them badly a few times first, which is something I still remind myself of whenever I'm trying to pick up a new skill as an adult.

  • LRwasting my pocket money"Wasting my pocket money" pairs the verb "waste" with the specific, age-appropriate noun "pocket money" rather than a vaguer phrase like "spending my money badly," giving the anecdote concrete, relatable texture -- the kind of flexible, topic-specific collocation the Band 7.0 lexical target calls for, used naturally here within reported speech (Mr Tan's own words) rather than as decoration. It also economically explains Mr Tan's motive for teaching the skill in the first place."Wasting my pocket money"把动词"waste"与具体、贴合年龄特点的名词"pocket money"搭配在一起,而不是用"spending my money badly"这样含糊的说法,让这段轶事有了具体、可感的质感——这正是Band 7.0词汇标准所要求的灵活、贴合话题的搭配,在这里作为转述话语(陈先生自己的原话)中自然使用,而非刻意装饰。它也简洁地解释了陈先生当初教这项技能的动机。
  • FCIt wasn't easy at first, to be honest."To be honest" is a natural spoken hedge that frames the admission of difficulty as a candid aside rather than a scripted transition, and its placement at the end of the sentence rather than the more formal front-loaded "Honestly," adds to the conversational rhythm -- this kind of natural linking device, rather than IELTS-Writing transitions like "However," is exactly what the shared band guidance asks speakers to use. It also sets up the concrete difficulties (finding the leak, poor patches) described immediately afterward."To be honest"是一种自然的口语缓和语,把承认困难这件事处理成一句真诚的补充说明,而非事先写好的过渡语;把它放在句末,而不是更正式的、前置的"Honestly,",更增添了口语的节奏感——这种自然的连接方式,而非"However,"这类IELTS写作式的过渡词,正是各band共通的评分说明所要求说话者使用的。它也顺势引出紧接着描述的具体困难(找漏水点、劣质的补丁)。
  • GRAMr Tan didn't really explain things in detail, he mostly just watched and corrected me when I got something wrong, which meant I had to pay close attention every single time.A comma-spliced pair of independent clauses is extended by a "which" relative clause referring back to the whole preceding idea -- Mr Tan's hands-off teaching style -- to state its consequence (having to pay close attention every time). This long but accurately controlled chain stays within Band 7.0's "comfortable mix... generally accurate" range rather than reaching for more deliberately varied structures like a cleft sentence, and it captures something specific about the teaching method rather than just that a skill was learned.一对用逗号连接的独立分句(逗号粘连)后面又接上一个"which"引导的关系从句,回指前面整个想法——陈先生放手型的教学风格——并说明其后果(每次都必须格外留意)。这个虽长但控制得当的句子链,仍属于Band 7.0"自如结合……总体准确"的范围,而没有伸展到像分裂句那样更刻意求变的结构,而且它捕捉到的是关于教学方法本身的具体信息,而不只是"学会了一项技能"这么简单。
7.5 分

The paradoxical phrase 'the boring part is the part' captures an insight in compact, idiomatic language, and the result clause 'well enough that he let me do the price board' shows the varied complex grammar expected at Band 7.5.带有悖论意味的短语'the boring part is the part'(无聊的那部分恰恰才是关键的那部分)用凝练、地道的语言捕捉到了一种洞见,而结果状语从句'well enough that he let me do the price board'(做得足够好,好到他让我来做价目板)则展现出7.5分所期待的多样化复杂语法。

The older person was Mr Lộc, a retired sign painter who lived two doors from us in Hue, and the skill was lettering with a brush — painting letters by hand, the way shop signs were made before printers existed.

I was fifteen, bored in the summer holidays, and I'd been watching him repaint the name on a neighbour's pharmacy, one letter at a time, with a brush the width of my finger and no ruler. I asked how he kept the lines straight. He said, 'Come at seven tomorrow,' and that was the beginning.

How difficult it was: much harder than it looked, and he made it harder on purpose. For the first three weeks I wasn't allowed to paint a letter. I painted straight lines on old newspaper, hundreds a morning, then curves, then the same curve until it was identical ten times in a row. He'd look, say nothing, and hand me another sheet. When he finally let me paint an 'O', I understood why: my hand had learned to move from the shoulder, not the wrist, and the brush did what I meant. By the end of that summer I could letter a small sign well enough that he let me do the price board for the noodle shop.

Why it was useful, and why it mattered that I learned it from him rather than from a video: I'm a designer now, and half my job is typography. Everything I know about the weight of a line and the space inside a letter started on his newspaper. But the real skill was patience — he taught me that the boring part is the part, and that you earn the interesting work by doing the dull work identically a thousand times. No video would have made me wait three weeks. He did, by simply not being in a hurry. He died a few years ago. I still have the brush.

  • LRthe boring part is the partThe phrase plays on repeating 'part' with two different meanings — first as 'the tedious portion' and then, more provocatively, as 'the essential, defining portion' — compressing a philosophy of skill-learning into five words rather than spelling it out in a full sentence. That kind of compact, paradoxical wordplay is the natural, idiomatic economy the Band 7.5 lexical target rewards, since it requires real confidence with English rhythm to land a repeated word as a turn of phrase rather than a mistake. It also crystallises the whole point of the anecdote — that patience with dull repetition, not talent, was the real lesson from Mr Lộc — into a single memorable line.
  • FCHe did, by simply not being in a hurry. The sentence answers an implied question — how did Mr Lộc teach patience without a video or a formal method? — in the shortest way possible, adding only one small prepositional phrase ('by simply not being in a hurry') rather than a fuller explanation. That kind of compressed, confident close, trusting the reader to supply the connection to what came before, is a more sophisticated coherence move than the fuller restatement a lower-band answer would need to make its point clear. Coming right after the rhetorical claim that 'no video would have made me wait three weeks,' the short sentence delivers the answer with real economy.
  • GRABy the end of that summer I could letter a small sign well enough that he let me do the price board for the noodle shop.'Well enough that' is a result structure showing the skill reached a specific, testable threshold — good enough to earn a real task — rather than a vaguer claim like 'I got quite good at it.' Building the sentence around this kind of degree-plus-result clause, and fronting it with the time marker 'by the end of that summer,' is the flexible grammar the Band 7.5 target expects over the simpler main-clause statements a 6.5 answer would rely on. The specific reward that follows — being trusted with the noodle shop's actual price board — also gives the abstract idea of 'improvement' a concrete, verifiable marker.'Well enough that'是一个结果结构,表明这项技能达到了一个具体、可检验的门槛——好到足以承担一项真正的任务——而不是像"我练得相当不错了"这样含糊的说法。围绕这种"程度+结果"从句来构建句子,并用时间标记'by the end of that summer'把它前置,正是7.5分目标所期待的灵活语法,胜过6.5分答案会依赖的更简单的主句陈述。随后而来的那个具体的回报——被信任负责面馆真正的价目表——也为"进步"这一抽象概念提供了一个具体、可核实的标志。

  1. 1. Why do children often enjoy learning from older people?

Sticks to short, self-contained sentences joined by plain connectors like 'For example' and 'also', which keeps the reasoning easy to follow but flat.全篇使用简短、独立的句子,用'For example'和'also'这类朴素的连接词衔接,使论证容易理解,但显得平淡。

I think children enjoy learning from older people because they are patient and not in a hurry. For example, Mr Lộc taught me a skill that took a whole summer, but he never rushed me and treated me like an apprentice, not just a child. Older people also have interesting stories and knowledge about things from the past, like old tools or old songs. Parents are often too busy with work to explain things slowly. Children can also feel when someone is really interested in teaching them, and they enjoy that attention.

    我觉得孩子们喜欢跟年长的人学东西,是因为他们有耐心,不会急躁。比如说,禄先生教我一门手艺,花了整整一个夏天,但他从不催我,还把我当成学徒看待,而不仅仅是个孩子。老年人往往还有很多有趣的故事和关于过去的知识,比如老工具或者老歌。父母常常忙于工作,没时间慢慢讲解。孩子们也能感觉到什么时候有人是真心想教他们的,他们很享受那种关注。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCFor example, Mr Lộc taught me a skillThe 6.5 answer signals its example with the basic, formulaic connector 'For example'. The 7.0 version instead opens with a spoken hedge ('Honestly, I think'), and 7.5 drops the signpost altogether and folds the example straight into the sentence, reading as more naturally connected rather than mechanically listed.6.5分答案用基础、套路化的连接词'For example'引出例子。7.0版本改用口语化的缓冲语('Honestly, I think')开头,而7.5干脆去掉这种提示标记,把例子直接融入句子,读起来更自然连贯,而非机械罗列。
    • LRtreated me like an apprentice, not just a childThe phrasing here is plain and literal. At 7.0 this becomes 'spoke to me almost like an apprentice', softened with a hedge, while 7.5 sharpens it into 'addressed me as an apprentice rather than a boy' plus the idiomatic 'intoxicating' — noticeably more precise and evaluative.这里的措辞朴实直白。到了7.0,变成了带缓冲语气的'spoke to me almost like an apprentice',而7.5则把它锐化为'addressed me as an apprentice rather than a boy',再加上地道的'intoxicating'一词——明显更精准、更具评价性。
    • GRAChildren can also feel when someone is really interested in teaching them, and they enjoy that attention. This is a simple compound sentence joined with 'and'. The 7.5 version fuses a similar idea with a semicolon and a relative clause ('that kind of attention is rare, and kids gravitate toward it instinctively'), showing a wider range of clause-linking devices.这是一个用'and'连接的简单并列句。7.5版本用分号和一个关系从句('that kind of attention is rare, and kids gravitate toward it instinctively')把类似的意思融合起来,展现出更丰富的分句衔接手法。

Uses spoken hedges such as 'Honestly' and 'To be fair' to soften claims, and links the example with 'for instance' inside a longer, more natural-sounding sentence.使用了'Honestly'和'To be fair'这类口语化的缓冲语来软化论断,并用'for instance'把例子衔接进一个更长、听起来更自然的句子里。

Honestly, I think it's mainly because older people aren't in a rush and don't treat children like children. Mr Lộc, for instance, gave me a whole summer for a skill a school would have covered in a single afternoon, and he spoke to me almost like an apprentice, which felt quite special at fifteen. To be fair, parents are usually rushing between jobs and don't have that same patience. Older people also carry stories and knowledge from a world that seems a bit exotic now, like old tools or songs from the past. I'd say children simply go wherever that kind of genuine attention is.

    • FCTo be fair, parents are usually rushing between jobsThe hedge 'To be fair' marks a concession before returning to the main argument, a cohesive move the 6.5 answer doesn't attempt — it just states parents are busy as a flat fact. The 7.5 version achieves the same concession more compactly with 'by contrast'.缓冲语'To be fair'标示出一个让步,然后再回到主论点,这是6.5分答案没有尝试的衔接手法——它只是平铺直叙地陈述父母很忙这一事实。7.5版本则用更简洁的'by contrast'实现了同样的让步效果。
    • LRa world that seems a bit exotic nowThe hedge 'a bit' softens the claim in a natural spoken way. The 6.5 answer avoids this kind of evaluative colouring entirely, while 7.5 commits fully to the image with 'a whole exotic world that seems to have vanished', trading caution for a more vivid, idiomatic phrase.缓冲词'a bit'以自然的口语方式软化了论断。6.5分答案完全避开了这种带评价色彩的表达,而7.5则完全投入到这个意象中,用'a whole exotic world that seems to have vanished'这样的说法,以谨慎换取更生动、更地道的表达。
    • GRAMr Lộc, for instance, gave me a whole summer for a skill a school would have covered in a single afternoon, and he spoke to me almost like an apprentice, which felt quite special at fifteen. This one sentence chains a main clause, a coordinated clause with 'and', and a non-defining relative clause ('which felt quite special'), noticeably more complex than the two short sentences the 6.5 answer uses for the same content.这一句串联了一个主句、一个用'and'连接的并列分句,以及一个非限定性关系从句('which felt quite special'),明显比6.5分答案用两个短句表达同样内容要复杂得多。

Opens with the idiomatic image 'racing the clock' and closes on the evaluative touch 'kids gravitate toward it instinctively', giving the answer a shaped, reflective ending rather than just stopping.以富有画面感的习语'racing the clock'开篇,并以带评价意味的'kids gravitate toward it instinctively'收尾,使答案有了经过雕琢、发人深省的结尾,而不是戛然而止。

Mostly, I'd say, because older people aren't racing the clock and they don't reduce a child to just a child. Mr Lộc handed me an entire summer for a skill a school would have crammed into an afternoon, and he addressed me as an apprentice rather than a boy, which at fifteen was genuinely intoxicating. Parents, by contrast, are shuttling between jobs and rarely have that same unhurried patience. Older people also come bearing stories, hand tools, old songs — a whole exotic world that seems to have vanished. And children have a sixth sense for when an adult is truly invested in passing something on; that kind of attention is rare, and kids gravitate toward it instinctively.

    • FCOlder people also come bearing stories, hand tools, old songs — a whole exotic world that seems to have vanished. The dash lets the list of images stand apart from the sentence as a kind of aside, a cohesion device neither lower band attempts. The 6.5 answer would simply list these items after 'like', and the 7.0 answer keeps them inside the main clause.破折号让这一串意象作为一种旁白独立于句子之外,这是两个较低分段都没有尝试的衔接手法。6.5分答案只会简单地在'like'后面罗列这些内容,而7.0分答案把它们保留在主句之内。
    • LRracing the clockThis idiom replaces the plain 6.5 phrasing 'not in a hurry' with a vivid, natural collocation. The 7.0 answer sits in between with the more literal 'aren't in a rush', showing a clear step up in idiomaticity.这个习语用一个生动自然的搭配取代了6.5分朴素的表达'not in a hurry'。7.0答案处于中间位置,用了更直白的'aren't in a rush',显示出习语化程度上明显的提升。
    • GRAAnd children have a sixth sense for when an adult is truly invested in passing something on; that kind of attention is rare, and kids gravitate toward it instinctively. The semicolon fuses two related independent clauses into one flowing thought, and the sentence opens with 'And' for spoken-style cohesion — more flexible than the 6.5 answer's plain compound sentence or the 7.0 answer's single hedge-led statement.分号把两个相关的独立分句融合成一个流畅的思路,句子以'And'开头,呈现出口语式的衔接——比6.5分答案朴素的并列句或7.0答案单一的、由缓冲语引导的陈述都更灵活。

Builds each idea as its own short sentence, signposted plainly with 'For example' and 'also', which is clear but somewhat mechanical.把每个想法都写成独立的短句,用'For example'和'also'这类朴素的标记词引出,清晰易懂,但略显机械。

I think a society loses things it doesn't even realise it had. For example, hand lettering almost disappeared in Hue because nobody younger thought the old sign painters were worth asking. Lonely old people also get sick, and hospitals end up paying more for it later. It teaches the young something bleak too, since everyone gets old eventually. I believe societies that respect their elders stay steadier, while the ones that don't repeat mistakes their grandparents already knew to avoid.

    • FCFor example, hand lettering almost disappeared in HueThe 6.5 answer uses the stock connector 'For example' to introduce its story. • LRhospitals end up paying more for it laterThis is a plain, literal way of describing who bears the cost. The 7.0 and 7.5 answers instead use the more idiomatic phrasal verb 'lands on' ('the cost eventually lands on hospitals and their own children'), a subtler, more indirect way of saying the same thing.这是描述谁来承担代价的一种朴素、直白的方式。7.0和7.5答案则改用更地道的短语动词'lands on'('the cost eventually lands on hospitals and their own children'),用一种更含蓄、更间接的方式表达同样的意思。

The 7.5 answer builds a similar contrast with a semicolon and adds a participial phrase ('carrying more memory and less panic'), packing in more grammar without more words.这个'while'从句在一句话中对比了两类群体——这是该分数段所能达到的最复杂结构。7.5答案则用分号构建出类似的对比,并加上一个分词短语('carrying more memory and less panic'),在不增加篇幅的情况下塞入了更多语法结构。

Opens with the reflective hedge 'without even knowing it had them' and uses 'To be fair' to pivot into the harder, more critical point about practical cruelty.以带有反思意味的缓冲语'without even knowing it had them'开篇,并用'To be fair'转入更尖锐、更具批判性的关于现实残酷性的论点。

Honestly, I think a society like that loses things without even knowing it had them. The hand-lettering skill nearly disappeared in Hue in just one generation, because nobody younger thought the old sign painters had anything worth asking about. To be fair, it's also cruel in a practical sense — older people who are left alone tend to get sick, lonely and poor, and the cost eventually lands on hospitals and their own children. I'd say societies that respect their elders tend to be steadier, while the ones that don't end up repeating mistakes their grandparents had already solved.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCTo be fair, it's also cruel in a practical senseThe hedge 'To be fair' signals a shift to a tougher claim, a cohesive move absent from the 6.5 answer's flatter 'also get sick'. The 7.5 answer achieves a similar pivot with the more compact 'There's also a more practical cruelty at work:'.缓冲语'To be fair'标示出向更尖锐论断的转折,这是6.5分答案那句平淡的'also get sick'所没有的衔接手法。7.5答案用更简洁的'There's also a more practical cruelty at work:'实现了类似的转折。
    • LRloses things without even knowing it had themThis phrasing captures a slightly abstract, reflective idea in natural spoken English. The 6.5 answer states the same point more baldly as 'loses things it doesn't even realise it had', while 7.5 tightens it further into 'quietly loses things it doesn't even know it once had'.这种措辞用自然的口语英语捕捉了一个略带抽象、反思意味的想法。6.5分答案则更直白地表达为'loses things it doesn't even realise it had',而7.5则进一步收紧为'quietly loses things it doesn't even know it once had'。
    • GRAolder people who are left alone tend to get sick, lonely and poor, and the cost eventually lands on hospitals and their own children.A relative clause ('who are left alone') plus a coordinated result clause gives this sentence more internal structure than the 6.5 version's simple 'and hospitals end up paying' chain, though it still falls short of the semicolon-based balance in the 7.5 answer.一个关系从句('who are left alone')加上一个并列的结果分句,使这句话比6.5版本简单的'and hospitals end up paying'链条式结构更有内部层次,不过仍不及7.5答案中基于分号的平衡结构。

Closes with a semicolon-balanced sentence and the idiomatic verb 'blindsided', giving the final judgement more rhetorical weight than a plain statement would.以一个用分号平衡的句子和习语化的动词'blindsided'收尾,使最终的论断比平铺直叙的陈述更具修辞分量。

I'd say it quietly loses things it doesn't even know it once had. Hand lettering nearly vanished from Hue with a single generation of sign painters, simply because nobody younger imagined the old men had anything worth asking about. There's also a more practical cruelty at work: elderly people left to fend for themselves get sick, lonely and poor, and that cost eventually lands on hospitals and on their own children. It teaches the young something rather bleak about their own future too, given that everyone is heading the same way. Societies that respect their elders tend to be steadier, carrying more memory and less panic; the ones that don't get faster and shallower, then find themselves blindsided by mistakes their grandparents had already made.

    • FCThere's also a more practical cruelty at work:The colon here promises an explanation and delivers it in the next clause, a tighter cohesive device than the 6.5 answer's looser 'also get sick' chain or the 7.0 answer's dash aside.这里的冒号预示了一个解释,并在下一个分句中兑现,这是比6.5分答案那松散的'also get sick'链条,或7.0答案的破折号旁白更紧凑的衔接手法。
    • LRget faster and shallower, then find themselves blindsided by mistakes their grandparents had already made'Blindsided' is a vivid, idiomatic verb choice that the lower bands avoid entirely — the 6.5 answer settles for the plain 'repeat mistakes', and the 7.0 answer for 'repeating mistakes'.'Blindsided'是一个生动、地道的动词选择,而较低分段完全避开了这种表达——6.5分答案满足于朴素的'repeat mistakes',7.0答案则是'repeating mistakes'。
    • GRASocieties that respect their elders tend to be steadier, carrying more memory and less panic; the ones that don't get faster and shallower, then find themselves blindsided by mistakes their grandparents had already made.A participial phrase ('carrying more memory and less panic') plus a semicolon joining two contrasted clauses makes this a genuinely complex sentence, well beyond the 6.5 answer's simple 'while' contrast.一个分词短语('carrying more memory and less panic')加上用分号连接的两个对比分句,使这成为一个真正复杂的句子,远超6.5分答案简单的'while'对比结构。

I partly agree, but there are also real costs. For example, Mr Lộc taught me for free, the retired swimmers near my beach keep three cafés busy every morning, and my cousin's whole job is caring for older people. This shows that an ageing population creates jobs and demand in health, housing and services. But there are real problems too, like fewer workers and rising pension costs. I think the benefits come when older people stay active, but the costs are bigger when they're pushed out too early.

    • FCThis shows that an ageing population creates jobs and demand in health, housing and services.'This shows that' is a basic, slightly mechanical way to draw a conclusion from the example. The 7.5 answer instead folds the same conclusion straight into the example sentence with a dash, which reads as more fluently connected.'This shows that'是一种基础、略显机械的方式,用来从例子中得出结论。7.5答案则用破折号把同样的结论直接融入例子句中,读起来衔接更流畅。
    • LRkeep three cafés busy every morning'Busy' is a plain, general adjective. The 7.5 answer upgrades this to 'keep three cafés alive at dawn', where 'alive' and 'at dawn' add a more vivid, specific image of the same fact.'Busy'是一个朴素、笼统的形容词。7.5答案将其升级为'keep three cafés alive at dawn','alive'和'at dawn'为同一事实增添了更生动、具体的画面感。
    • GRABut there are real problems too, like fewer workers and rising pension costs. This lists two problems loosely joined with 'and' after 'like'. The 7.5 answer instead uses a colon followed by three parallel noun phrases, a more compact and controlled way to list similar ideas.这里在'like'之后用'and'松散地连接了两个问题。7.5答案则用冒号加三个并列的名词短语,以更紧凑、更有条理的方式列出类似的想法。

I'd say I partly agree, though the costs are definitely real too. Mr Lộc taught me for nothing, the retired swimmers at my beach keep three cafés running at dawn, and my cousin's entire career is caring for older people, so an ageing population clearly creates demand for health, housing and services, plus a lot of accumulated skill. That said, the problems are just as clear — fewer workers supporting more retirees, and rising pension and medical costs. Honestly, I think the benefits show up when older people are kept active and included, while the costs dominate when they're pushed out at sixty.

    • FCThat said, the problems are just as clear'That said' pivots cleanly from the benefits back to the costs, a concession move the 6.5 answer only manages with a bare 'But'. The 7.5 answer achieves the same pivot even more economically inside a single long sentence.'That said'干净利落地把话题从好处转回代价,这是一种让步手法,而6.5分答案只用了一个光秃秃的'But'来实现。7.5答案则在一个长句内部更经济地实现了同样的转折。
    • LRa lot of accumulated skillThis is a reasonable but fairly generic quantity phrase. The 7.5 answer sharpens it to 'a surprising amount of accumulated skill and savings', adding both a stronger quantifier and an extra precise noun.这是一个合理但相当笼统的数量短语。7.5答案将其锐化为'a surprising amount of accumulated skill and savings',既加强了数量词,又增加了一个更精确的名词。
    • GRAso an ageing population clearly creates demand for health, housing and services, plus a lot of accumulated skill. The result clause introduced by 'so' links the examples to the claim within one sentence, more integrated than the 6.5 answer's separate 'This shows that' sentence, though still simpler than the 7.5 answer's dash-fused version.由'so'引出的结果分句在一句话内把例子和论点联系起来,比6.5分答案单独成句的'This shows that'更为融合,不过仍比7.5答案用破折号融合的版本简单。

Partly agree, though the costs are every bit as real as the benefits. Mr Lộc taught me for nothing, the retired swimmers at my beach keep three cafés alive at dawn, and my cousin's whole career now revolves around caring for older people — an ageing population creates demand for health, housing, leisure and services, and it holds a surprising amount of accumulated skill and savings. Older people volunteer, mind grandchildren so parents can work, and spend rather than hoard. The problems are equally plain: fewer workers propping up more retirees, climbing pension and medical bills, slower growth. The benefits surface when older people are kept active and included; the costs take over when they're simply pushed out at sixty. It's less a fact about ageing than a choice about how we handle it.

    • FCThe problems are equally plain: fewer workers propping up more retirees, climbing pension and medical bills, slower growth. The colon introduces a tight, parallel list without needing a connector like 'like' or 'such as', a more economical cohesive device than either lower band uses for the same content.冒号引出一个紧凑、并列的列表,不需要'like'或'such as'这样的连接词,这是一种比两个较低分段所用手法更经济的衔接方式。
    • LRspend rather than hoard'Hoard' is a precise, slightly unexpected word choice where the lower bands simply say 'saving'. Pairing it with 'rather than' also creates a neat contrast in very few words.'Hoard'是一个精准、略带意外感的词语选择,而较低分段只是简单地说'saving'。将它与'rather than'搭配,还用极少的词创造出一种巧妙的对比。
    • GRAThe benefits surface when older people are kept active and included; the costs take over when they're simply pushed out at sixty. The semicolon balances two mirrored clauses of similar length and structure, a controlled parallelism that neither the 6.5 answer's separate sentences nor the 7.0 answer's dash aside quite achieves.分号平衡了两个长度和结构相近、彼此呼应的分句,这种有控制的对称结构,是6.5分答案的独立句子或7.0答案的破折号旁白都未能完全实现的。

But Mr Lộc taught me almost the same thing at fifteen, and it worked well. I think the difference was that I could make mistakes in front of Mr Lộc without it affecting our relationship. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCBut I still think the most important lessonsThe plain contrastive connector 'But' returns to the counterpoint at the end. The 7.0 answer softens this into the more natural spoken hedge 'That said', and 7.5 keeps the same hedge but embeds it inside a denser sentence.朴素的转折连接词'But'在结尾处引出反方观点。7.0答案将其软化为更自然的口语缓冲语'That said',而7.5保留了同样的缓冲语,但把它嵌入一个更密集的句子中。

    • GRAMy father once tried to teach me to draw when I was ten, and it ended in tears for both of us.A simple compound sentence with 'and'. I think the real difference was that failing in front of Mr Lộc meant nothing about our relationship. To be fair, parents carry too much history and hope, so children sometimes resist them. • LRit actually stuck'Stuck' used this way is an informal, idiomatic collocation for a lesson being remembered — more natural than a plain phrase like 'it worked well' in the 6.5 answer, though 7.5 goes further by dropping the intensifier entirely for a leaner 'it stuck'.这样用的'stuck'是一个非正式、地道的搭配,表示一段道理被记住了——比6.5分答案中'it worked well'这样朴素的表达更自然,不过7.5更进一步,干脆去掉强调语,用更精简的'it stuck'。

Parents carry too much history and too much hope, and children resist them partly just because they're parents. Outside adults, by contrast, can be patient without worrying, honest without wounding, and admired without complication. 为什么是这个分数

This made me feel needed, which my job doesn't give me. Helpers gain something too, like patience and a better understanding of what getting old is really like. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCSo calling it only 'charity' isn't really fair. The connector 'So' announces the conclusion as a separate final step. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCThere's even research suggesting people who help others tend to live longer and feel better.Bringing in outside evidence after the personal anecdote is a cohesive move the 6.5 answer doesn't make — it stays entirely inside the anecdote and general statements. This widens the argument without a separate topic sentence.在个人轶事之后引入外部证据,是6.5分答案没有做到的衔接手法——它完全局限于轶事和泛泛的陈述之内。这在不用单独主题句的情况下拓宽了论证。

It's more even than it looks, I'd say. In Mr Lộc's last years I carried his shopping and fixed his phone, and in return I got stories about Hue in the 1970s that nobody else was listening to, along with a sense of being needed that my job doesn't give — the helper gets something the person being helped may not even realise they're handing over. Older people gain the practical things: safety, company, dignity, a life that stays possible. Helpers gain perspective, patience, and something like a preview of their own age. Studies even suggest people who help others live longer and feel better. I'd say the older person benefits more in the moment and the helper more over a lifetime — calling it charity misses half the exchange.

    • FCthe helper gets something the person being helped may not even realise they're handing overThe dash lets the answer add a reflective aside mid-sentence rather than starting a new sentence for it, keeping the argument flowing in a way the more segmented 6.5 answer doesn't attempt.破折号让答案在句子中间加入一个反思性的旁白,而不是为此另起一句,使论证保持流畅,这是分段较多的6.5答案没有尝试的方式。
    • LRcalling it charity misses half the exchangeThis closing phrase is compact and idiomatic, treating 'the exchange' as a single economical noun for the whole two-way relationship just described — more efficient than the 6.5 answer's longer, more literal 'calling it only charity isn't really fair'.这个结尾短语简洁而地道,用'the exchange'这一个经济的名词来概括刚刚描述的整个双向关系——比6.5答案那句更长、更直白的'calling it only charity isn't really fair'更高效。
    • GRAI'd say the older person benefits more in the moment and the helper more over a lifetime — calling it charity misses half the exchange. The verb 'benefits' is understood rather than repeated before 'more over a lifetime', an ellipsis that makes the sentence leaner than the 6.5 answer's fully spelled-out 'but the helper benefits more over a longer time'.动词'benefits'在'more over a lifetime'之前被省略而非重复,这种省略使句子比6.5答案完整拼写出的'but the helper benefits more over a longer time'更精炼。

I think different people help in different ways, and no single person can do it all. For example, Mr Lộc's daughter in Saigon sent money, the neighbours checked on him daily, and a nurse visited monthly. Each of them did something the others couldn't. Family is best for love and important decisions because they know the person well. Neighbours help with everyday things since they are close by, and professionals give medical care that untrained people might get wrong. I think leaving everything to one family member, like daughters often do, makes them exhausted and doesn't really help the older person enough.

    • FCFor example, Mr Lộc's daughter in Saigon sent moneyThe example is introduced with the plain connector 'For example'. Both higher bands drop this signpost and simply state the three examples one after another, which reads as more naturally connected.例子由朴素的连接词'For example'引出。两个较高分段都去掉了这个提示,直接依次陈述三个例子,读起来衔接更自然。
    • LREach of them did something the others couldn't.This is a correct but plain summary sentence. The 7.5 answer expresses the same idea more compactly inside the example sentence itself, with 'each did what the others simply couldn't' following a dash.这是一个正确但平淡的总结句。7.5答案则在例子句本身内部更简洁地表达了同样的想法,用破折号后接'each did what the others simply couldn't'。
    • GRAFamily is best for love and important decisions because they know the person well.A single 'because' clause, one idea per sentence. Honestly, I think it depends on the need, and the mistake is expecting one person to cover everything. Mr Lộc's daughter in Saigon sent money, the neighbours looked in daily, and a nurse visited monthly — each did something the others couldn't. To be fair, family is usually best for love and decisions, since they know the person, while neighbours are best for everyday things because they're close by; a family two hours away might not notice a fall. I'd say a society that leaves it all to daughters, as mine largely does, ends up exhausting them without really serving the parents.

    • LRends up exhausting them without really serving the parents'Ends up exhausting' is a more idiomatic phrasal choice than the 6.5 answer's plain 'makes them exhausted', and pairing it with 'without really serving' creates a neater contrast.'Ends up exhausting'是比6.5分答案朴素的'makes them exhausted'更地道的短语选择,与'without really serving'搭配,形成了更巧妙的对比。

Mr Lộc's daughter lived in Saigon and sent money; the neighbours on our street looked in daily; a nurse visited monthly — each did what the others simply couldn't. Family tends to be best for love and decisions, because they know the person; neighbours are best for the everyday, since they're already there — a family member two hours away can't notice a fall. Professionals are needed for medical care and the physical work that untrained love can get wrong, and other older people help in ways nobody else quite can, because they understand from the inside. A society that leaves it all to daughters, as mine largely does, exhausts the daughters and still shortchanges the parents.

I think it's mainly because the contributions have become invisible once they succeed. For example, my colleagues cross a bridge every day that Mr Lộc's generation built by hand, but a finished bridge just looks like any other bridge. Young people also live apart from older people now, in different neighbourhoods and online, so they know old people as a group, not as individuals. And schools teach kings and wars, not who actually built things like the water system. I think recognising their contributions needs real contact and stories, and both have become rarer.

    • FCFor example, my colleagues cross a bridge every dayThe bridge example is flagged with the plain connector 'For example'. The 7.5 answer removes this signpost entirely and simply states the fact, which lets the argument flow more naturally into the example.桥的例子由朴素的连接词'For example'标出。7.5答案完全去掉了这个提示,直接陈述事实,让论证更自然地流入例子。
    • LRinvisible once they succeedThis is accurate but slightly literal. The 7.5 answer compresses the same idea into 'invisible by succeeding', a more economical and idiomatic phrase for the same cause-and-effect relationship.这个说法准确,但略显直白。7.5答案把同样的想法压缩为'invisible by succeeding',用更经济、更地道的短语表达同样的因果关系。
    • GRAYoung people also live apart from older people now, in different neighbourhoods and online, so they know old people as a group, not as individuals.A single 'so' clause links cause and effect, with a plain 'not as' contrast at the end. Both higher bands rebuild this with a dash-set-off aside for 'different neighbourhoods, different screens', a more polished way to present the same list.一个单独的'so'分句连接了因果,结尾处用了一个朴素的'not as'对比。两个较高分段都用破折号隔开的旁白'different neighbourhoods, different screens'重新组织了这一部分,以更精致的方式呈现同样的列表。
    7.0 分

Sets off 'different neighbourhoods, different screens' between two dashes as a compressed aside, and uses 'To be fair' and 'And honestly' to keep the tone conversational across several reasons.用两个破折号把'different neighbourhoods, different screens'隔开,作为一个精简的旁白,并用'To be fair'和'And honestly'在多个理由之间保持对话式的语气。

Honestly, I think it's partly because their contributions have become invisible simply by succeeding. My colleagues cross a bridge every day that Mr Lộc's generation built largely by hand, and they've never once thought about it, because a finished bridge just looks like a bridge. To be fair, young people also live more separately from older people now — different neighbourhoods, different screens — so they end up knowing the elderly as a category rather than as people with real histories. And honestly, nobody really tells them — schools teach kings and wars, not who built the water system. I'd say recognition needs contact and story, and both have thinned quite a lot.

    • FCTo be fair, young people also live more separately from older people now'To be fair' introduces this reason as a considered concession within a longer chain of reasons, a more connected move than the 6.5 answer's plain 'Young people also live apart...'.'To be fair'把这个理由作为一个在较长的理由链条中经过考虑的让步引出,这比6.5答案朴素的'Young people also live apart...'更具衔接性。
    • LRknowing the elderly as a category rather than as people with real historiesThis precisely contrasts 'category' with 'people with real histories' in parallel phrasing. The 6.5 answer expresses a similar idea more plainly as 'know old people as a group, not as individuals'.这里用平行结构精确地对比了'category'和'people with real histories'。6.5答案更朴素地表达了类似的想法,即'know old people as a group, not as individuals'。
    • GRAyoung people also live more separately from older people now — different neighbourhoods, different screens — so they end up knowing the elderly as a category rather than as people with real histories. Two dashes set off a parallel two-item aside in the middle of the sentence before the 'so' clause continues, a more elaborate structure than the 6.5 answer's single flat 'so' clause.两个破折号在句子中间隔开一个平行的两项旁白,然后'so'分句继续,这是一种比6.5答案单一平淡的'so'分句更精巧的结构。
    7.5 分

Opens with the reason itself as the whole sentence ('Because the contributions have become invisible by succeeding, I'd say'), a bolder structure than the fuller subject-first sentences the lower bands use to start.以理由本身作为整个开头句('Because the contributions have become invisible by succeeding, I'd say'),这比较低分段用来开头的、更完整的主语在前的句子更大胆。

Because the contributions have become invisible by succeeding, I'd say. My colleagues cross the river every day on a bridge that Mr Lộc's generation built largely by hand, and they've never once thought about it, because a finished bridge just looks like a bridge. Young people live inside a world older people made, and the making itself is hidden. They also live apart from the old now — different neighbourhoods, different screens — so they know the elderly as a category rather than as people with histories. The sheer speed of change makes old knowledge look obsolete rather than foundational, and honestly nobody tells them otherwise: schools teach kings and wars, not who built the water system. Recognition needs contact and story, and both have worn rather thin.

    • FCYoung people live inside a world older people made, and the making itself is hidden. This short, balanced pair of clauses works almost like a mini-thesis statement placed mid-answer, a rhetorical device neither lower band uses — they keep building their argument through separate, more literal reasons instead.这一对简短、对称的分句几乎像是放在答案中段的一个迷你论点陈述句,这是两个较低分段都没有使用的修辞手法——它们反而是通过一个个独立、更直白的理由来构建论证。
    • LRinvisible by succeedingThis compact phrase packs cause and effect into three words. The 6.5 answer needs the fuller, more literal 'invisible once they succeed', and the 7.0 answer sits between the two with 'invisible simply by succeeding'.这个简洁的短语用三个词就浓缩了因果关系。6.5答案需要更完整、更直白的'invisible once they succeed',而7.0答案则介于两者之间,用的是'invisible simply by succeeding'。
    • GRAThey also live apart from the old now — different neighbourhoods, different screens — so they know the elderly as a category rather than as people with histories. The dash-set-off pair 'different neighbourhoods, different screens' is even more condensed here than in the 7.0 answer, with the definite article dropped ('as people with histories' rather than 'with real histories'), tightening the sentence further.用破折号隔开的这对短语'different neighbourhoods, different screens'在这里比7.0答案中更凝练,并且省去了修饰语('as people with histories'而不是'with real histories'),使句子进一步收紧。
