6.5 分

A plain comparative sentence and the simple statement 'How easy it was to decide is a difficult question' keep the answer correct but linguistically modest, Band 6.5 level.一个朴素的比较句以及一句简单的陈述 'How easy it was to decide is a difficult question'(这个决定有多容易,本身就是个难说清的问题),让答案表达正确但语言上比较普通,处于6.5分水平。

The decision I want to talk about is my decision to move from Hue to Da Nang after I finished university in Hanoi, about six years ago. Instead of going back to live near my family in Hue, I chose to move alone to Da Nang and look for a job there as a UI designer.

Why I chose this was because Da Nang had more design studios and more modern companies than Hue at that time, and I wanted to work on bigger projects, like mobile apps for international clients. I also liked the idea of living near the beach and starting a life on my own.

How easy it was to decide is a difficult question. The decision itself came quite quickly, in just a few days, because I really wanted this kind of job. But it wasn't easy in my heart, because my parents worried about me living alone in a new city, and my grandmother didn't understand why I couldn't just work near home.

I'm very pleased with the result now. I found a good job at a small studio here, I've made close friends, and I really enjoy my life by the river. Every time I visit Hue, I feel proud that I made that decision by myself, even though it was hard at the beginning.

  • GRADa Nang had more design studios and more modern companies than Hue at that timeThis is a straightforward comparative structure, repeating "more... than" across two parallel nouns, studios and companies, used correctly but without any additional subordination or variation layered on. It's accurate and gets the comparison across clearly, matching the mostly-simple-sentence profile expected at 6.5. The comparison also directly supports the reason given for the move, keeping the grammar tied closely to the content rather than being decorative.这是一个直白的比较结构,在两个并列的名词——工作室和公司——之间重复使用"more... than",使用得正确,但没有叠加任何额外的从属或变化结构。这样的表达准确,清楚地传达了比较的意思,符合6.5水平所预期的以简单句为主的特征。这个比较也直接支撑了搬迁所给出的理由,使语法与内容紧密相连,而非流于装饰。
  • FCHow easy it was to decide is a difficult question. This short, plain statement directly acknowledges the complexity of the question without elaborating on it much beyond the following two sentences, which is a clear but minimal way to signal a nuanced answer is coming. At 6.5, this kind of direct topic sentence keeps the answer coherent and on-task; a 7.5 answer might instead open with a more evaluative or figurative framing. It's functional rather than stylish, doing exactly the organizational job it needs to and no more.这句简短、平实的话直接承认了这个问题的复杂性,而没有在接下来的两句话之外做更多阐述,这是一种清晰但极简的方式,预示着一个有细微差别的答案即将到来。在6.5水平,这种直接的主题句让答案保持连贯、紧扣任务;而Band 7.5的答案可能会以一个更具评价性或比喻性的框架开场。这句话是功能性的而非风格化的,恰好完成了所需要的组织任务,不多不少。
  • LRI'm very pleased with the result now"Very pleased" is plain, high-frequency vocabulary stating the outcome directly, with no more varied or specific alternative like "genuinely relieved" or "proud of how it turned out." It's accurate and appropriately positive, summing up the paragraph before the specific details of job, friends, and life by the river that follow. This kind of unembellished summary phrase is typical of 6.5, where clarity is prioritized over lexical variety."Very pleased"是平实、高频的词汇,直接陈述了结果,而没有使用像"genuinely relieved"或"proud of how it turned out"这样更多样或更具体的替代词。这样的表达准确,积极的程度也恰如其分,在接下来关于工作、朋友和河边生活的具体细节展开之前,先总结了这个段落。这种不加修饰的总结性用语,是Band 6.5的典型特征,清晰度在这里被置于词汇多样性之上。
7.0 分

The 'not just...but' structure explaining what makes the outcome pleasing shows reasoned, comfortable development typical of Band 7.0, without idiomatic reach.'not just...but'(不只是……而是)的结构用来解释是什么让这个结果令人满意,展现出7.0分典型的有理有据、运用自如的展开方式,同时没有刻意追求习语化表达。

The decision I'd like to talk about is my decision to switch from studying architecture to working in UI design, which I made about four years ago, halfway through a training course in architecture.

I chose to make this decision because, while I was doing an internship at an architecture firm, I realised I actually enjoyed the digital design software side of the work far more than the physical building side. A friend suggested I try a short online course in UI design just to see if I liked it, and within a few weeks I was pretty sure I'd found something I was genuinely more suited to.

It wasn't an easy decision to make, if I'm honest. I'd already spent a couple of years studying architecture, and part of me worried I'd be wasting that time if I switched. My parents were also a little concerned at first, since UI design wasn't something they knew much about, and it felt like a less stable choice compared to a more traditional career path.

I'm really pleased with how it turned out, though. I found a junior position at a design studio not long after finishing the course, and within a year or so I was already leading small projects myself. I think what makes me most pleased isn't just the job itself, but the fact that I actually look forward to going to work most days now, which wasn't really true when I was studying architecture. Whenever I doubt myself, I remind myself how much more confident and capable I feel in this field compared to before, and that usually reassures me I made the right call.

  • GRApart of me worried I'd be wasting that time if I switchedA conditional clause, "if I switched," is embedded inside a reported-thought structure, "part of me worried I'd be...," handling the hypothetical worry naturally within the larger sentence rather than as a standalone if-clause. This is the comfortable, accurate complex grammar the 7.0 descriptor describes, more ambitious than a plain statement of worry but not layered with additional subordination the way a 7.5 sentence might be. It also gives weight to the "wasn't an easy decision" claim made just before it, showing the genuine hesitation behind the change.一个条件从句"if I switched"被嵌入在一个转述想法的结构"part of me worried I'd be..."内部,在更大的句子框架内自然地处理了这种假设性的担忧,而不是作为一个独立的if从句出现。这是Band 7.0描述所提到的那种自如、准确的复合语法,比平铺直叙地陈述担忧更有野心,但还没有像Band 7.5句子那样叠加额外的从属结构。它也为前面刚提到的"wasn't an easy decision"这一说法增添了分量,展现出这次转变背后真实的犹豫。
  • FCwhat makes me most pleased isn't just the job itself, but the fact that I actually look forward to going to work most days nowThe "not just X but Y" structure develops the answer with a reflective distinction, separating the job itself from the daily feeling of looking forward to it, rather than simply restating that the career change worked out well. This is the kind of development beyond plain description the 7.0 fluency descriptor calls for; a 6.5 answer would likely just say "I'm happy with my job now." It also sharpens the contrast drawn in the final sentence with how the speaker felt studying architecture."not just X but Y"这一结构以一种反思性的区分来发展答案,把工作本身与每天期待去上班的那种感受区分开来,而不是简单地重申转行的结果很好。这正是Band 7.0流利度描述所要求的那种超越平白描述的发展方式;Band 6.5的答案很可能只会说"I'm happy with my job now"。它也让最后一句与说话者当年学建筑时的感受之间的对比更加鲜明。
  • LRI realised I actually enjoyed the digital design software side of the work far more than the physical building side"Far more than" is a natural, flexible way of intensifying a comparison, stronger and more idiomatic-sounding than a plain "much more than," used here to contrast two concrete aspects of architectural work, the digital software side versus the physical building side. This is the step slightly above plain vocabulary that 7.0 lexical resource calls for, without reaching for a genuinely rare word. It also identifies precisely the moment of realization that triggered the whole career change described in the rest of the answer."Far more than"是一种自然、灵活地加强比较语气的方式,比"much more than"这样平淡的说法更有力、也更具习语色彩,在这里被用来对比建筑工作的两个具体方面——数字软件那一面与实体建筑那一面。这是超越简单词汇、向上迈出的一小步,正是Band 7.0词汇资源所要求的水平,而无需去寻找一个真正生僻的词。它也精确地指出了触发答案其余部分所描述的整个职业转变的那个顿悟时刻。
7.5 分

The balanced parallel structure 'I couldn't see a way to do the work well without doing harm, and I couldn't see a way to do it badly and stay proud of the studio' shows the sophisticated, controlled grammar of Band 7.5.工整对称的句式 'I couldn't see a way to do the work well without doing harm, and I couldn't see a way to do it badly and stay proud of the studio'(我想不出一种既能把工作做好又不造成伤害的办法,也想不出一种把工作做差了还能为工作室感到自豪的办法),展现出7.5分那种精巧而收放自如的语法。

The decision I'd describe was one I made at the studio last year, when I was the design lead on a project we hadn't yet accepted: I recommended that we turn down the biggest contract we'd ever been offered.

What the decision was, specifically: a company approached us to design an online gambling app, with a budget roughly three times our usual project fee. The founders were polite, and the money would have paid the studio's salaries for most of a year.

Why I chose to make the decision was that I'd spent a month looking at how these apps work. They're designed to keep people playing when they should stop, and the design skill required — the part they wanted us for — is exactly the skill of making it hard to leave. I couldn't see a way to do the work well without doing harm, and I couldn't see a way to do it badly and stay proud of the studio. I also thought about my uncle, who lost a motorbike and most of a year to card games on his phone, and about how a version of me would have designed the screens he couldn't close.

How easy it was to decide: the principle was easy, and everything else was hard. Two of the founders argued for taking it. We had a slow quarter ahead. I had to stand in a meeting and say that I'd rather the studio was smaller than that. We voted, and it was close.

The result, which is why I'm pleased, took eight months to show. The quarter was as slow as feared. Then a hospital group chose us for the project I've been describing all year, and their director told me afterwards that one reason was a story he'd heard about a studio that turned down a gambling client. We were, apparently, the ones who'd say no. It's the best thing anyone's said about my work.

  • GRAI couldn't see a way to do the work well without doing harm, and I couldn't see a way to do it badly and stay proud of the studio. Both clauses open with the identical frame 'I couldn't see a way to,' then diverge into two different consequences — doing the work well but causing harm, versus doing it badly but keeping pride — a deliberately engineered parallelism, not an accidental repetition. Sustaining that kind of balanced, symmetrical structure across a long sentence without an error is the sophisticated grammatical control the Band 7.5 target rewards, well beyond the single simple contrast a 6.5 answer would offer. The parallelism also mirrors the genuine ethical bind the speaker is describing — there was no good option — so the grammar enacts the dilemma rather than just describing it.
  • LRI'd rather the studio was smaller than that'I'd rather the studio was smaller than that' uses the idiomatic 'would rather + past subjunctive' pattern naturally and briefly, rather than a more textbook-sounding paraphrase like 'I would prefer the company to remain small.' Deploying this kind of native-like structure smoothly, in the middle of reported speech from a tense meeting, is the natural collocation and idiomatic flexibility the Band 7.5 target rewards over the plainer, more literal phrasing a 6.5 or 7.0 answer would reach for. It also captures the emotional register of the moment — a blunt, almost defiant line actually said out loud in a meeting.'I'd rather the studio was smaller than that'自然而简洁地使用了'would rather + 过去式虚拟语气'这一习语句型,而不是像"我更希望公司保持小规模"这样听起来像教科书式的转述。在一场紧张会议的转述话语中如此流畅地运用这种近乎母语者水准的结构,正是7.5分目标所看重的自然搭配与习语灵活性,胜过6.5分或7.0分答案会采用的更平实、更字面化的措辞。它也捕捉到了那一刻的情绪基调——一句在会议上真实说出口的、直率近乎挑衅的话。
  • FCWe were, apparently, the ones who'd say no. It's the best thing anyone's said about my work. After eight months of narrated consequence, the answer resolves into two short, almost clipped sentences rather than one long summarising statement, and the word 'apparently' signals the speaker only learned this secondhand, adding a layer of understated surprise. This kind of compressed, reflective payoff — stating what the decision came to mean rather than just what happened — is the evaluative closing move the Band 7.5 coherence target expects, in contrast to a plainer answer that would end on a flat statement like 'I was happy with my decision.' The shift to short sentences also gives the ending real rhetorical weight, letting the final line land without being buried in additional clauses.

This 6.5 answer stays at band level through short, plainly connected sentences and the basic linker "So I think routines are useful, because", rather than any more complex construction.这篇6.5分范文之所以停留在该分数段,是因为它使用了简短、平铺直叙连接的句子,以及"So I think routines are useful, because"这种基础连接词,而没有使用更复杂的句式结构。

People make many small decisions every day. In my morning, I decide what to wear, whether to swim or sleep more, and which route to take to work. I also decide what to eat and how to reply to messages. These choices feel small, but there are so many of them that they can be tiring. So I think routines are useful, because they turn small decisions into habits and save energy for bigger choices.

    人们每天都要做很多小决定。早上我要决定穿什么、是去游泳还是多睡一会儿,还有上班走哪条路。我还要决定吃什么、怎么回复消息。这些选择看起来很小,但数量太多,累积起来也会让人疲惫。所以我认为习惯很有用,因为它们把小决定变成习惯,从而为更重要的选择省下精力。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCSo I think routines are useful, becauseThe simple linking word "so" gives a direct, mechanical connection between the example and the conclusion. A higher band would vary cohesion with a phrase like "that's why" or fold the reasoning into a single flowing sentence instead of starting a new one with "so".简单的连接词"so"在例子和结论之间建立了一种直接、机械的联系。更高分数段会用类似"that's why"这样的短语来变换衔接方式,或者把推理融入同一个流畅的句子里,而不是用"so"另起一句。
    • LRsmall decisionsThis phrase is lifted straight from the question, showing limited paraphrase. Higher bands would substitute synonyms like "minor choices" or "everyday calls" to demonstrate lexical range.这个短语几乎直接照搬了题目原文,说明改述能力有限。更高分数段会替换成"minor choices"或"everyday calls"之类的同义表达,以展示词汇的广度。
    • GRAThese choices feel small, but there are so many of them that they can be tiring.A single compound-complex sentence, but built from simple clauses joined mechanically with "but" and "that". A 7.5 answer would compress this into a participial or fronted structure for more flexibility.这是一个复合复杂句,但其实是由简单分句用"but"和"that"机械连接而成的。7.5分范文会把它压缩成分词结构或前置结构,以获得更强的灵活性。
    7.0 分

The spoken hedge "Honestly, people make dozens" and the correlative "until you're tired, and then suddenly they all do" mark this as a 7.0 answer, reflective but still built from fairly linear sentences.口语化的缓和语"Honestly, people make dozens"以及关联结构"until you're tired, and then suddenly they all do",体现出这是一篇7.0分范文——有反思性,但句子结构仍然比较线性。

Honestly, people make dozens of small decisions before they even leave the house. My own mornings involve deciding what to wear, whether to swim or sleep a bit longer, which route to take, and whether the rain radar means I should leave now. Then there's what to eat, what to reply to first, and whether coffee happens at the café or the studio. I'd say none of these feel like real decisions until you're tired, and then suddenly they all do. That's why I think having a routine matters, because it turns these small choices into habits and saves your energy for the ones that actually count.

    • FCHonestly, people make dozensThe hedge "Honestly" opens the answer with a natural spoken register, a feature rare at 6.5. Still, the paragraph relies on straightforward chronological listing rather than the tighter, woven cohesion of a 7.5 response.缓和语"Honestly"让答案以自然的口语语域开篇,这在6.5分中很少见。不过整段仍然依赖简单的按时间顺序罗列,而不是7.5分答案那种更紧密交织的衔接方式。
    • LRwhether the rain radar means I should leave nowThis shows more precise, personalised vocabulary than a generic "what to wear" list alone would. A 7.5 band would push further into idiomatic compactness, e.g. "the rain radar says go".这里展示了比单纯罗列"what to wear"更精确、更个性化的词汇。7.5分会更进一步,追求地道而紧凑的表达,例如"the rain radar says go"。
    • GRAI'd say none of these feel like real decisions until you're tired, and then suddenly they all doThis correlative structure ("until... then") shows more grammatical range than plain simple sentences, though it still uses two independent clauses joined by "and" rather than a subordinated or fronted structure.这种关联结构("until... then")比单纯的简单句展示了更丰富的语法范围,不过它仍然是用"and"连接两个独立分句,而不是使用从属结构或前置结构。
    7.5 分

The cleft structure "What routines do, I think, is convert small decisions into habits" and the image "stitched together from small choices" push this into 7.5 territory through compact, idiomatic phrasing.分裂句结构"What routines do, I think, is convert small decisions into habits"以及意象"stitched together from small choices",通过紧凑而地道的措辞,把这篇答案推向了7.5分的水平。

Dozens of decisions get made before breakfast, most of them invisible until fatigue makes them loud. My own mornings are stitched together from small choices — what to wear, whether to swim or sleep in, which route beats the traffic, whether the rain radar means leaving now, and whether coffee happens at the café or the studio. People decide what to eat, what to spend, whether to say something or quietly let it go. Parents, meanwhile, are making these calls for two people at once. What routines do, I think, is convert small decisions into habits, freeing up mental energy for the choices that genuinely matter. A day with absolutely no routine is a day built from a thousand tiny choices, and that is simply exhausting.

    • FCmost of them invisible until fatigue makes them loudThis participial phrase folds a whole extra idea into the opening sentence rather than starting a new one, giving tighter cohesion than a more sequential listing would.这个分词短语把一整个额外的想法融入开篇句,而不是另起一句,因此比按顺序罗列的写法衔接更紧密。
    • LRstitched together from small choicesThe metaphor "stitched together" is genuinely idiomatic and precise, well beyond the plain "involve deciding" of a lower band; a 6.5 answer would use no figurative language at all here.隐喻"stitched together"地道且精准,远超低分段中平淡的"involve deciding";6.5分答案在这里根本不会用任何修辞手法。
    • GRAWhat routines do, I think, is convert small decisions into habits, freeing up mental energyA fronted "what...is" cleft structure plus a participial clause ("freeing up") shows flexible, exam-topping grammar; a 6.5 response would instead write two short separate sentences joined by "so".前置的"what...is"分裂句结构加上分词从句("freeing up"),展示了灵活、顶尖水平的语法运用;而6.5分答案则会写成两个用"so"连接的独立短句。

Simple listing punctuated by the plain connector "So early decisions are about study and work" keeps this answer at 6.5, with ideas presented one after another rather than fused.简单的罗列,加上平淡的连接词"So early decisions are about study and work",让这篇答案停留在6.5分——各个想法一个接一个地呈现,而不是融合在一起。

People make different important decisions as they get older. My sister chose her subject to study at eighteen, then chose a city to work in at twenty-two, and got married at twenty-seven. Later she decided to have children. Now, at thirty-eight, she is deciding whether to move back to Hue to be near our parents. So early decisions are about study and work, and later ones are about family and taking care of parents.

    人们随着年龄增长会做出不同的重要决定。我姐姐十八岁时选了大学专业,二十二岁时选了工作的城市,二十七岁结婚。后来她决定要孩子。现在三十八岁的她正在考虑要不要搬回顺化,好离父母近一些。所以早期的决定大多和学业、工作有关,而后期的决定则更多和家庭、照顾父母有关。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCSo early decisions are about study and work, and later ones are about family and taking care of parents. The summary sentence is tacked on at the end with the basic connector "so", giving a listed rather than integrated structure. A 7.5 response would weave this generalisation earlier and link it more tightly to the example with a dash or colon.总结句是用基础连接词"so"加在句末的,呈现出罗列式而非融合式的结构。7.5分答案会把这个概括提前融入文中,并用破折号或冒号与例子更紧密地连接起来。
    • LRimportant decisionsThis phrase simply repeats the question wording without paraphrase. Higher bands substitute terms like "life-stage choices" or "major turning points" to show lexical flexibility.这个短语只是原样重复了题目的措辞,没有改述。更高分数段会替换成"life-stage choices"或"major turning points"之类的说法,以展示词汇的灵活性。
    • GRALater she decided to have children.A short, simple past-tense sentence typical of 6.5 control. A higher band would fold this into a longer list using a colon or dash, as the 7.5 answer does with "which subject... whom to marry... when to have children".一个简短的过去式简单句,是6.5分典型的语言控制水平。更高分数段会把它并入更长的列表,用冒号或破折号连接,就像7.5分答案中的"which subject... whom to marry... when to have children"那样。
    7.0 分

The hedge "To be fair, there's also a quieter decision" and the colon-led list in "Take my sister: she chose which subject..." show the more natural, reflective register typical of 7.0.缓和语"To be fair, there's also a quieter decision"以及冒号引导的列表"Take my sister: she chose which subject...",展现出7.0分典型的更自然、更具反思性的语域。

I'd say important decisions tend to come in a sequence, and each one narrows the next. Take my sister: she chose which subject to study at eighteen, which city to work in at twenty-two, and who to marry at twenty-seven, and now, at thirty-eight, she's deciding whether to move back to Hue to be near our ageing parents. Early decisions are usually about direction, like education and career, while later ones are more about commitment, such as a partner or a family. To be fair, there's also a quieter decision running through all of it, which is what to say no to.

    • FCTo be fair, there's also a quieter decision running through all of itThe hedge "to be fair" signals a spoken, reflective tone that lower bands lack, though the idea is still added on as an afterthought rather than being woven through the whole answer as tightly as a 7.5 version would.缓和语"to be fair"传递出低分数段所缺乏的口语化、反思性语气,不过这个想法仍然是作为事后补充加进来的,而不像7.5分版本那样紧密地贯穿全文。
    • LRnarrows the next"Narrows" is a more precise, slightly abstract verb choice than a plain "chose" would be; it shows developing lexical control without yet reaching the more idiomatic density of a 7.5 answer."Narrows"是一个比平淡的"chose"更精确、略带抽象色彩的动词选择;它展示出正在发展中的词汇掌控力,但还没有达到7.5分答案那种地道而密集的程度。
    • GRATake my sister: she chose which subject to study at eighteen, which city to work in at twenty-two, and who to marry at twenty-sevenThe imperative opener "Take my sister" plus a colon shows some structural variety beyond simple sentences, though the list itself is still joined with plain "and" rather than a more compact dash construction.祈使句开头"Take my sister"加上冒号,展示出超越简单句的一些结构变化,不过列表本身仍然是用平淡的"and"连接,而不是更紧凑的破折号结构。
    7.5 分

Ellipsis after the colon in "Middle-life ones are about commitment: a partner, children, perhaps a business" and the participial "each choice closing some doors while opening others" mark the compact, flexible grammar of 7.5.冒号后面的省略结构"Middle-life ones are about commitment: a partner, children, perhaps a business",以及分词结构"each choice closing some doors while opening others",体现出7.5分紧凑而灵活的语法。

Important decisions arrive in a sequence, and each one quietly narrows the next. My sister's went like this: which subject to study at eighteen, which city to work in at twenty-two, whom to marry at twenty-seven, when to have children, and now, at thirty-eight, whether to move back to Hue as our parents age — each choice closing some doors while opening others. Early decisions tend to be about direction: education, career, where to live. Middle-life ones are about commitment: a partner, children, perhaps a business. Later ones shift toward care and letting go, including retirement and health. And running beneath every stage is the quieter decision of what to say no to, something people rarely count as a decision at all.

    • FCeach choice closing some doors while opening othersThis participial phrase is appended directly onto the long list without a new sentence, achieving denser cohesion than a separate "and now" clause would give.这个分词短语直接附加在长长的列表之后,而不是另起一句,因此比单独用"and now"分句实现了更紧密的衔接。
    • LRshift toward care and letting go"Shift toward" paired with "care and letting go" is vivid, near-idiomatic phrasing that a lower band would render more plainly as "decide about retirement"; it shows precise, topic-specific vocabulary."Shift toward"搭配"care and letting go",是一种生动、接近地道表达的措辞,而低分数段可能会更平淡地写成"decide about retirement";这体现出精确的、贴合主题的词汇运用。
    • GRAMiddle-life ones are about commitment: a partner, children, perhaps a business. The colon-plus-noun-phrase-list construction, with the verb dropped after the colon, is a compact, flexible structure that avoids the repetitive "she chose... she chose" pattern of lower bands and marks high-band grammatical control.冒号加名词短语列表的结构,冒号后面省略了动词,是一种紧凑而灵活的句式,避免了低分数段那种"she chose... she chose"的重复模式,体现出高分数段的语法掌控力。

The flat opener "People ask for advice for different reasons" and the simple "so" clause at the end keep this response at 6.5, with each point stated separately.平淡的开篇"People ask for advice for different reasons"以及结尾简单的"so"分句,让这篇答案停留在6.5分——每个论点都是分别陈述的。

People ask for advice for different reasons. Before I voted on a gambling client, I called my old studio director, not because I needed her opinion, but because I wanted to think out loud with someone. People also ask for advice because other people have more experience, like someone who has changed jobs before. Some people just want someone to share the responsibility with, so if it goes wrong, it isn't only their fault.

    人们寻求建议的原因各不相同。在就一个博彩类客户投票表态之前,我给以前工作室的总监打了电话,并不是因为我需要她的意见,而是因为我想找个人一起把想法说出来。人们寻求建议,也是因为别人经验更丰富,比如那些换过工作的人。有些人只是想找人分担责任,这样万一出了差错,也不全是自己的错。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCPeople ask for advice for different reasons. This generic topic sentence simply restates the question and adds little forward momentum. A 7.5 answer opens instead with a specific claim that immediately signals a position, rather than a restatement.这个泛泛的主题句只是重述了题目,几乎没有推动论述前进。7.5分答案则会以一个具体的论断开篇,立刻表明立场,而不是简单地重述题目。
    • LRnot because I needed her opinion, but because I wanted to think out loud"Think out loud" is a reasonable everyday phrase but used plainly with no further development. Higher bands extend it into a fuller image like "thinking with a witness" for more precision."Think out loud"是一个还算恰当的日常表达,但用得比较平淡,没有进一步展开。更高分数段会把它扩展成更完整的意象,比如"thinking with a witness",以获得更强的精确性。
    • GRASome people just want someone to share the responsibility with, so if it goes wrong, it isn't only their fault. Two clauses joined with the basic connector "so" show adequate but simple control. A 7.5 response would use a participial or reduced clause to compress the same idea more elegantly.用基础连接词"so"连接的两个分句展示出尚可但简单的语言控制力。7.5分答案会使用分词结构或简化从句,把同样的想法更优雅地压缩表达。

The hedge "Honestly, I don't think people always want an actual answer" and the balanced "wasn't her opinion but a chance to think out loud" structure are typical 7.0 features, more natural than 6.5 but not yet fully compact.缓和语"Honestly, I don't think people always want an actual answer"以及平衡结构"wasn't her opinion but a chance to think out loud",都是典型的7.0特征——比6.5更自然,但还没有完全紧凑。

Honestly, I don't think people always want an actual answer when they ask for advice. Before the vote on a gambling client, I called my old studio director, and what I really needed wasn't her opinion but a chance to think out loud with someone who would push back a little. People also ask because someone else has already been through the same thing, like a career change, and that experience is hard to get just by thinking alone. I'd say some people are also hoping to share the responsibility, so a bad result isn't entirely theirs to carry.

    说实话,我不认为人们寻求建议时总是想要一个真正的答案。在就一个博彩类客户投票之前,我给以前工作室的总监打了电话,而我真正需要的并不是她的意见,而是一个能和会稍微反驳自己的人一起把想法说出来的机会。人们寻求建议,也是因为别人已经经历过同样的事情,比如换工作,而这种经验光靠自己想是很难得到的。我想说,有些人也是希望能分担责任,这样万一结果不好,也不用完全由自己承担。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCHonestly, I don't think people always want an actual answerThe hedge "Honestly" and the personal stance "I don't think" create a more natural spoken register than a flat topic sentence, though the paragraph still moves through ideas in a fairly linear list.缓和语"Honestly"和个人立场表达"I don't think"营造出比平淡主题句更自然的口语语域,不过整段内容仍然是按比较线性的顺序罗列想法。
    • LRsomeone who would push back a little"Push back" is an idiomatic, precise collocation for the topic; it is slightly less developed than a fuller version folded into a longer sentence, as a 7.5 answer would do."Push back"是一个贴合主题、地道而精准的搭配;不过它的展开程度略逊于融入更长句子的完整版本,而7.5分答案会这样处理。
    • GRAwhat I really needed wasn't her opinion but a chance to think out loud with someone who would push back a littleThe "wasn't X but Y" contrastive structure shows good control of balanced grammar; a 6.5 answer would likely split this into two shorter, separate sentences instead."wasn't X but Y"这种对比结构展示出良好的平衡语法掌控力;而6.5分答案很可能会把它拆成两个更短的独立句子。
    7.5 分

The appositive "advice, in that sense, is a way of thinking with a witness" and the idiomatic "knows things no amount of solitary thinking supplies" give this answer its 7.5 precision and cohesion.同位语结构"advice, in that sense, is a way of thinking with a witness"以及地道表达"knows things no amount of solitary thinking supplies",赋予这篇答案7.5分应有的精确性和衔接性。

Often it isn't the answer people are really after. Before the vote on a gambling client, I called my old studio director, and what I needed wasn't her opinion so much as a chance to hear my own reasoning spoken aloud to someone willing to push back — advice, in that sense, is a way of thinking with a witness. People also ask because others have lived through it, and someone who has changed careers or raised children simply knows things no amount of solitary thinking supplies. Some are quietly hoping for permission to do what they've already decided, while others genuinely don't know, and a second mind catches what theirs has missed.

    • FCadvice, in that sense, is a way of thinking with a witnessThe appositive "in that sense" ties the abstract claim directly back to the concrete anecdote just given, creating tighter cohesion than a more sequential "I'd say some people are also..." transition.同位语"in that sense"把抽象的论断直接和前面刚讲的具体轶事联系起来,比"I'd say some people are also..."这种顺序式的过渡衔接得更紧密。
    • LRknows things no amount of solitary thinking suppliesThis is a genuinely idiomatic, compact way of expressing a common idea, more precise than a plainer "that experience is hard to get just by thinking alone".这是一种真正地道、紧凑的表达常见想法的方式,比平淡的"that experience is hard to get just by thinking alone"更精确。
    • GRAwhat I needed wasn't her opinion so much as a chance to hear my own reasoning spoken aloud to someone willing to push backThe "not X so much as Y" construction plus an embedded passive participial ("reasoning spoken aloud") shows flexible, exam-topping grammar rarely attempted at lower bands, which tend to keep clauses short and separate."not X so much as Y"结构,加上内嵌的被动分词结构("reasoning spoken aloud"),展示出灵活、顶尖水平的语法运用,而低分数段很少会尝试这种结构,它们更倾向于把分句写得又短又分开。

This answer sticks to short, separately stated sentences, closing with the basic connector in "So people should not waste time deciding things that do not really matter," which is characteristic of 6.5.这篇答案坚持使用简短、分别陈述的句子,并以带有基础连接词的"So people should not waste time deciding things that do not really matter"收尾,这是6.5分的典型特征。

I think it depends on the decision. I took a month to decide about the gambling client because it was a big decision, but I decided to hire Linh in only five seconds after her interview, and both were right. Slow decisions are better for big things like marriage or buying a house. Quick decisions are fine for small things that can be changed later. So people should not waste time deciding things that do not really matter.

    我觉得这要看是什么决定。关于要不要接那个博彩类客户,我花了一个月才做决定,因为那是个大决定;但雇用玲这件事,我在面试结束后五秒钟就决定了,而且两个决定后来都证明是对的。对于婚姻或买房这类大事,慢慢做决定比较好。对于以后还能改变的小事,快速决定就没问题。所以人们不应该在那些其实并不重要的事情上浪费时间做决定。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCSo people should not waste time deciding things that do not really matter. The closing generalisation is bolted on with "so" as a separate short sentence. A 7.5 answer integrates the same idea into a longer sentence with a connecting clause rather than stopping and restarting.结尾的概括性总结是用"so"作为一个独立短句"硬接"上去的。7.5分答案会把同样的想法融入一个带连接分句的更长句子中,而不是停下来再重新开始。
    • LRSlow decisions are better for big things like marriage or buying a house."Big things" is vague, everyday vocabulary. Higher bands replace it with more precise, topic-specific terms such as "irreversible and expensive" choices."Big things"是模糊、日常化的词汇。更高分数段会替换成更精确、贴合主题的表达,比如"irreversible and expensive"的选择。
    • GRAI took a month to decide about the gambling client because it was a big decision, but I decided to hire Linh in only five seconds after her interview, and both were right. This long sentence strings three clauses together with "but" and "and" in a fairly mechanical way. A 7.5 response achieves the same content with a dash and tighter subordination for more variety.这个长句用"but"和"and"把三个分句比较机械地串在一起。7.5分答案会用破折号和更紧密的从属结构来表达同样的内容,从而获得更多的句式变化。

Honestly, I'd say it depends on whether the decision can be reversed. I spent a whole month deciding about the gambling client, because the effects would last for years, but I hired Linh in about five seconds at the end of her interview, and both decisions turned out fine. Slow decisions suit things that are expensive or irreversible, like a marriage or a business direction, while quick ones suit almost everything else, since most choices can be corrected later. I think the real problem is when a slow decision is actually just avoidance, and the delay becomes the decision itself.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCHonestly, I'd say it depends on whether the decision can be reversed. The hedge "Honestly, I'd say" softens the claim in a natural spoken way, an improvement on a flatter "I think it depends" opener, though the rest of the answer still moves fairly sequentially rather than looping back to the opening claim.缓和语"Honestly, I'd say"以自然的口语方式软化了论断,比平淡的"I think it depends"开头有所进步,不过答案的其余部分仍然比较顺序化,没有回扣开头的论点。
    • LRSlow decisions suit things that are expensive or irreversible"Suit" is a nicely precise verb choice here, more developed than a plain "are better for"; it stops just short of the fuller idiomatic phrasing used at 7.5."Suit"在这里是一个用得很精准的动词,比平淡的"are better for"更成熟;不过它还没有完全达到7.5分那种更地道的表达方式。
    • GRAI think the real problem is when a slow decision is actually just avoidance, and the delay becomes the decision itselfThe noun clause after "is" shows reasonable complexity, though joining the final idea with "and" is simpler than a fronted "What's worst... is" cleft structure."is"后面的名词从句展示出合理的复杂度,不过用"and"来连接最后的想法,比前置的"What's worst... is"分裂句结构要简单。
    7.5 分

The dash-linked contrast "at the end of her interview — and both turned out right" and the fronted cleft "What's worst, I think, is the slow decision that's really just avoidance in disguise" mark this as 7.5.破折号连接的对比"at the end of her interview — and both turned out right",以及前置分裂句"What's worst, I think, is the slow decision that's really just avoidance in disguise",标志着这是一篇7.5分答案。

It really depends on whether the decision can be undone. I took a month over the gambling client, since the consequences would last years, yet I hired Linh in five seconds flat at the end of her interview — and both turned out right. Slow decisions suit the irreversible and the expensive: a marriage, a house, a business direction. Quick ones suit almost everything else, which is most things, and people waste huge amounts of energy agonising over choices that barely matter. Speed even has a hidden benefit, giving you time left over to learn from the result. What's worst, I think, is the slow decision that's really just avoidance in disguise, where the delay becomes the choice.

    • FCyet I hired Linh in five seconds flat at the end of her interview — and both turned out rightThe dash lets the second half of the contrast land as a punchy aside rather than a new sentence, giving tighter, more spoken-sounding cohesion than a plain "but" clause would.破折号让对比的后半部分以简短有力的插入语形式出现,而不是另起一句,这比平淡的"but"分句实现了更紧密、更接近口语的衔接。
    • LRpeople waste huge amounts of energy agonising over choices that barely matter"Agonising over" is a vivid, precise collocation well beyond a flat "waste time deciding"; it captures the emotional texture of the idea, not just the fact of it."Agonising over"是一个生动、精准的搭配,远超平淡的"waste time deciding";它捕捉到了这个想法的情感质地,而不只是陈述事实。
    • GRAWhat's worst, I think, is the slow decision that's really just avoidance in disguise, where the delay becomes the choice. The fronted cleft "What's worst... is" plus an embedded relative clause demonstrates flexible, high-band syntax; a 6.5 answer would simply state this as two short separate sentences.前置分裂句"What's worst... is"加上内嵌的定语从句,展示出灵活的高分句法;而6.5分答案只会把这个意思简单地写成两个独立的短句。

Yes, I think it is possible, but only if there is a clear process. Eleven people at my studio made a difficult decision in just one meeting, because someone asked the question clearly, everyone spoke, and then we voted. But sixty people in my street's group chat took a whole month to choose a paint colour, and in the end one person just decided anyway. So large groups can be good at decisions, but without a clear process, they usually fail.

    是的,我觉得是可能的,但前提是要有一套清晰的流程。我们工作室的十一个人在一次会议里就做出了一个很难的决定,因为有人把问题讲清楚了,每个人都发了言,然后我们投票表决。但我家那条街的群聊里六十个人,花了整整一个月才选出一个油漆颜色,最后还是有一个人自己拍板决定了。所以大群体是可以做出好决定的,但如果没有清晰的流程,通常都会失败。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCSo large groups can be good at decisions, but without a clear process, they usually fail. This closing sentence restates the point already made rather than adding anything new, a pattern typical of lower-band conclusions. A 7.5 answer would close with a more specific, forward-moving condition instead.这个结尾句只是重述了已经提过的观点,而没有增加任何新内容,这是低分数段结论的典型模式。7.5分答案则会以更具体、更向前推进的条件作为结尾。
    • LRmade a difficult decisionThis is plain, general vocabulary. Higher bands substitute a more evaluative phrase such as "reached a hard, good decision", combining precision with judgement in fewer words.这是平淡、笼统的词汇。更高分数段会替换成更具评价性的表达,比如"reached a hard, good decision",用更少的词兼顾精确性和判断力。
    • GRAbecause someone asked the question clearly, everyone spoke, and then we votedA simple three-item list joined with commas and "and" shows adequate coordination. A 7.5 band achieves the same content but links it with a semicolon to a contrasting clause, producing a more complex single sentence.用逗号和"and"连接的简单三项列表展示出尚可的并列结构。7.5分会用同样的内容,但用分号把它和一个对比性分句连接起来,构成一个更复杂的单句。

On the other hand, sixty people in my alley's group chat spent a whole month failing to choose a paint colour, and eventually let one person decide anyway. To be fair, large groups often know more between them than any one person does, but what they lack is coherence, so without a clear process, the loudest voices tend to win.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCTo be fair, large groups often know more between them than any one person doesThe hedge "To be fair" signals balanced, natural reasoning that lower bands lack, though the sentence is still linked to the rest with the simple connector "so" rather than the semicolon-based contrast used at 7.5.缓和语"To be fair"传递出低分数段所缺乏的平衡、自然的推理方式,不过这句话仍然是用简单的连接词"so"与其余部分相连,而不是7.5分使用的基于分号的对比结构。
    • LRwhat they lack is coherence"Coherence" is precise, slightly abstract vocabulary appropriate to the topic, a step up from a vaguer "fail"; this phrase already sits near top-band level."Coherence"是精确、略带抽象色彩且贴合主题的词汇,比模糊的"fail"更进一步;这个表达已经接近顶尖分数段的水平。
    • GRAOn the other hand, sixty people in my alley's group chat spent a whole month failing to choose a paint colour, and eventually let one person decide anyway. This sentence relies on "on the other hand" plus "and" to link ideas, a workable but fairly linear structure. A 7.5 version instead uses a semicolon to fuse two contrasting examples into one sentence, which is more compact.这句话依靠"on the other hand"加上"and"来连接想法,这是一种可行但比较线性的结构。7.5分版本则会用分号把两个对比性例子融合成一句话,更加紧凑。

The fragment opener "Yes, with structure, and badly without it" and the long semicolon-joined sentence contrasting the two meetings show the compact, confident grammar of 7.5.片段式开头"Yes, with structure, and badly without it",以及用分号连接、对比两场会议的长句,展示出7.5分紧凑而自信的语法。

Yes, with structure, and badly without it. Eleven people at my studio reached a hard, good decision in a single meeting, because someone framed the question, everyone spoke once, and a vote followed; sixty people in my alley's group chat, by contrast, took a month to choose a paint colour and then let one person decide anyway. Large groups genuinely hold more knowledge and more perspectives than any individual, so on questions of fact or of what people actually want, they can be wiser than experts. What they lack is coherence — without a process, the loudest voices win, discussion loops endlessly, and responsibility quietly dissolves. So large groups reach good decisions when the question is clear, the process is fair, and someone is willing to end it.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCYes, with structure, and badly without it.This clipped opening fragment immediately states the whole argument in miniature, a confident, economical move well beyond a fuller but more conventional opening sentence.这个简短的开头片段立刻以浓缩的形式表明了整个论点,是一种自信、精简的写法,远超更完整但更常规的开篇句。
    • LRthe loudest voices win, discussion loops endlessly, and responsibility quietly dissolvesThe triad of vivid verbs paints a precise picture of dysfunction, considerably more evocative than a flatter "the loudest voices tend to win".这三个生动的动词组合描绘出一幅精确的功能失调图景,比平淡的"the loudest voices tend to win"更有画面感。
    • GRAEleven people at my studio reached a hard, good decision in a single meeting, because someone framed the question, everyone spoke once, and a vote followed; sixty people in my alley's group chat, by contrast, took a month to choose a paint colour and then let one person decide anyway. The semicolon fuses two parallel, contrasting examples into a single long sentence, a mark of genuine control over complex punctuation that lower bands avoid by keeping such examples in separate sentences.分号把两个平行、对比性的例子融合成一个长句,体现出对复杂标点符号真正的掌控力,而低分数段会通过把这类例子分开写成独立句子来回避这种用法。

The spreadsheet said I should take a certain contract, but I remembered my uncle, who lost a whole year to card games, and that memory told me it was risky. So I think the best decisions use both logic and emotion. Logic helps you compare options, but emotion helps you know what you really care about in the first place. Without emotion, logic can lead you to the wrong goal.

    我不认为最好的决定只靠逻辑就能得出。表格数据显示我应该接下某个合同,但我想起了我叔叔,他曾经因为打牌输掉了整整一年,那段记忆告诉我这样做有风险。所以我认为最好的决定要同时用到逻辑和情感。逻辑能帮你比较各个选项,但情感能帮你先弄清楚自己真正在意的是什么。没有情感的引导,逻辑可能会把你带向错误的目标。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCSo I think the best decisions use both logic and emotion. The thesis statement is delayed until after the example and introduced with the basic connector "so". A 7.5 answer states a similar claim more assertively earlier and threads it directly to the anecdote with a semicolon rather than a new sentence.论点句被推迟到举完例子之后才出现,并用基础连接词"so"引出。7.5分答案会更早、更有把握地提出类似的论点,并用分号而不是新句子把它和轶事直接串联起来。
    • LRthat memory told me it was risky"Told me it was risky" is functional but plain. Higher bands render the same idea more vividly, personifying the memory for effect, as in "the memory turned out to be the better analyst"."Told me it was risky"表意清楚但比较平淡。更高分数段会把同样的意思写得更生动,通过拟人化记忆来达到修辞效果,比如"the memory turned out to be the better analyst"。
    • GRALogic helps you compare options, but emotion helps you know what you really care about in the first place.A balanced sentence using "but" to contrast two simple clauses. A 7.5 band achieves a similar contrast with two full sentences joined by "and", each carrying an extra subordinate clause, showing greater range.这是一个用"but"对比两个简单分句的平衡句。7.5分会用两个由"and"连接的完整句子来实现类似的对比,每个句子都带有一个额外的从属分句,展示出更大的语言范围。

The reframing hedge "Honestly, I don't think it's really logic versus emotion at all" and the parallel "while purely emotional ones can just be reckless" are typical 7.0 features.重新定性的缓和语"Honestly, I don't think it's really logic versus emotion at all"以及平行结构"while purely emotional ones can just be reckless",是7.0分的典型特征。

Honestly, I don't think it's really logic versus emotion at all. The spreadsheet said take the contract, but the memory of my uncle losing a whole year to card games said no, and that memory turned out to be the better judge. I'd say logic is great for comparing options once you already know what you value, but emotion is often how you find out what you value in the first place. Purely logical decisions can be reasoned very carefully toward completely the wrong goal, while purely emotional ones can just be reckless.

    • FCHonestly, I don't think it's really logic versus emotion at all.The hedge "Honestly" plus the direct reframing of the question shows confident, natural spoken cohesion, an improvement on a flatter opening; the rest of the answer still lists points with "I'd say" and "while" rather than fusing them as tightly as a 7.5 version.缓和语"Honestly"加上对问题的直接重新定性,展示出自信、自然的口语衔接,比平淡的开头有所进步;不过答案的其余部分仍然是用"I'd say"和"while"来罗列观点,而不是像7.5分版本那样紧密融合。
    • LRthat memory turned out to be the better judge"The better judge" is a nice personification, similar in spirit to "the better analyst" but slightly less precise in context; it shows developing but not yet fully idiomatic control."The better judge"是一个不错的拟人化表达,在精神上类似"the better analyst",但在语境中略欠精确;它展示出正在发展、但还没有完全地道的语言掌控力。
    • GRAPurely logical decisions can be reasoned very carefully toward completely the wrong goal, while purely emotional ones can just be reckless. The parallel structure "purely X... while purely Y..." is a solid complex sentence, though a 7.5 band would tighten the same idea into two shorter clauses joined by a semicolon instead, removing padding like "very carefully" and "completely".平行结构"purely X... while purely Y..."是一个扎实的复杂句,不过7.5分会把同样的想法收紧成两个用分号连接的更短分句,去掉像"very carefully"和"completely"这样的填充词。
    7.5 分

The semicolon-joined opening "The spreadsheet said take the contract; the memory of my uncle... said no" and the vivid "unease about a deal is often a pattern recognised before it's understood" mark this as 7.5.用分号连接的开头"The spreadsheet said take the contract; the memory of my uncle... said no",以及生动的表达"unease about a deal is often a pattern recognised before it's understood",标志着这是一篇7.5分答案。

The spreadsheet said take the contract; the memory of my uncle losing a year to card games said no, and the memory turned out to be the better analyst. I'd argue the best decisions use both, and that the split between logic and emotion is largely false. Logic excels at comparing options once you already know what you value, and it guards against panic and wishful thinking. Emotion is how you discover what you value in the first place, and it carries real information — unease about a deal is often a pattern recognised before it's understood. Purely logical decisions can be perfectly reasoned toward the wrong goal; purely emotional ones can be reckless. The good ones let feeling set the direction while reasoning checks the route.

    • FCThe spreadsheet said take the contract; the memory of my uncle losing a year to card games said noOpening directly with a semicolon-linked contrast, with no framing sentence beforehand, throws the reader straight into the anecdote — a more confident, economical opening than a softer "Honestly, I don't think..." lead-in.直接以分号连接的对比开篇,前面没有铺垫句,直接把读者带入轶事——这是一种比更委婉的"Honestly, I don't think..."式开头更自信、更精简的写法。
    • LRunease about a deal is often a pattern recognised before it's understoodThis is a precise, almost aphoristic formulation of a common idea, well beyond a plainer "emotion is often how you find out what you value" phrasing; it shows genuine idiomatic density.这是对一个常见想法的精确、近乎格言式的表述,远超平淡的"emotion is often how you find out what you value"这种说法;它展示出真正地道、密集的表达。
    • GRAPurely logical decisions can be perfectly reasoned toward the wrong goal; purely emotional ones can be reckless. The semicolon joins two grammatically parallel independent clauses without any connector at all, a compact structure that requires confident control of punctuation; lower bands would default to "while" or "but" to join the same two ideas.分号把两个语法上平行的独立分句连接起来,中间没有使用任何连接词,这是一种需要对标点符号有自信掌控力的紧凑结构;低分数段则会默认使用"while"或"but"来连接同样的两个想法。

Leaders often make decisions that nobody else wants to make. Two years ago, the mayor of my city ordered coastal areas to evacuate before a typhoon, but the typhoon turned away, and the mayor was criticised for a week. The decision was still correct with the information he had at the time. Leaders also decide where money goes, and that means deciding who does not get it. They must choose between safety and freedom, like during a pandemic, and sometimes they must decide fast, without enough time to wait.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCThe decision was still correct with the information he had at the time. This justification is stated as a flat, separate fact after the story rather than being folded into the sentence describing the criticism. A 7.5 answer links the two ideas in one sentence with a semicolon, tying cause and consequence together.这个理由是在故事讲完之后,作为一个平淡、独立的事实陈述出来的,而不是被融入描述批评的那句话里。7.5分答案会用分号把这两个想法连在同一句话里,把原因和结果绑在一起。
    • LRLeaders often make decisions that nobody else wants to make. This is a serviceable but literal phrasing. A 7.5 band compresses the same idea into the punchier fragment "The ones nobody else wants", which is more economical and idiomatic.这是一种可用但比较直白的表达。7.5分会把同样的想法压缩成更有力的片段"The ones nobody else wants",更精简、也更地道。
    • GRAThey must choose between safety and freedom, like during a pandemic, and sometimes they must decide fast, without enough time to wait.Repeating "must" twice across the sentence is grammatically correct but slightly repetitive; a higher band would vary the verbs, as with "weigh", "hire and fire", and "choose".在句子里重复使用两次"must"在语法上没错,但略显重复;更高分数段会变换动词,比如用"weigh"、"hire and fire"和"choose"。

I'd say leaders often have to make the decisions nobody else wants to. Two years ago, the mayor ordered the coastal districts evacuated a day before a typhoon that then turned away, and he was criticised for a week, even though the decision was right given the information he had at the time. Leaders decide where money goes, which really means deciding who doesn't get it. They have to weigh safety against freedom, as happened during the pandemic, and they hire and fire people too. To be fair, the hardest kind is probably deciding under pressure with a deadline, when even waiting for better information counts as a decision in itself.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCTo be fair, the hardest kind is probably deciding under pressure with a deadlineThe hedge "To be fair" and the ranking "the hardest kind" show a more evaluative, reflective stance than a plain listing of examples, though it is still introduced as a fairly separate final point rather than woven into the flow as tightly as a 7.5 closing sentence.缓和语"To be fair"和排序性表达"the hardest kind",展现出比单纯罗列例子更具评价性、反思性的立场,不过它仍然是作为一个比较独立的收尾观点被提出的,而不像7.5分收尾句那样紧密融入行文。
    • LRwhich really means deciding who doesn't get it"Which really means" is a natural spoken hedge that adds precision to the plain fact stated; it is close to a near-identical phrase used at 7.5, showing this level of lexical control is already emerging."Which really means"是一个自然的口语化缓和语,为已经陈述的平淡事实增添了精确性;它和7.5分中几乎一模一样的表达很接近,说明这种词汇掌控力已经初现端倪。
    • GRAeven though the decision was right given the information he had at the timeThe concessive clause "even though" shows good subordination; a 7.5 band achieves a similar concession but fuses it into an even longer sentence using a semicolon to add a further consequence clause, showing an extra level of structural ambition.让步分句"even though"展示出良好的从属结构运用;7.5分会实现类似的让步效果,但用分号把它融入一个更长的句子,再加上一个结果分句,展示出更高层次的结构追求。

The ones nobody else wants — that's often what leadership decisions boil down to. Two years ago the city ordered the coastal districts evacuated a day before a typhoon that then turned away, and the mayor was criticised for a week, even though the decision was correct given the information available; leaders make those calls knowing they'll be judged on the outcome. Leaders decide where money goes, which quietly means deciding who doesn't get it. They weigh safety against freedom, as during a pandemic, hire and fire, and choose between two goods, or sometimes two harms. In business, they decide what the company is for, which sounds abstract yet determines everything. Hardest of all is deciding under uncertainty with a deadline looming, when even waiting for better information is itself a decision.

    • FCThe ones nobody else wants — that's often what leadership decisions boil down to.Opening with a fragment and a dash creates an immediate, confident hook, far more striking than a more conventional "I'd say leaders often have to make..." opening sentence.用片段加破折号开篇,立刻制造出一种自信的悬念感,比更常规的"I'd say leaders often have to make..."这种开篇句要抓人得多。
    • LRwhich sounds abstract yet determines everythingThis concise contrast packs a full evaluative judgement into a short relative clause, more compact and idiomatic than a plainer equivalent phrasing.这个简洁的对比把完整的评价性判断压缩进了一个短短的定语从句里,比平淡的对应表达更紧凑、更地道。
    • GRAeven though the decision was correct given the information available; leaders make those calls knowing they'll be judged on the outcomeThe semicolon fuses a concessive clause with a fresh independent clause containing its own participial phrase ("knowing they'll be judged"), a layered structure well beyond the simpler subordination seen at 7.0 or the short separate sentences at 6.5.分号把一个让步分句和一个新的独立分句融合在一起,而这个独立分句本身还带有一个分词短语("knowing they'll be judged"),这种层层叠加的结构远超7.0分中较简单的从属结构,也远超6.5分中简短独立的句子。

I think leaders should listen to public opinion, but not always follow it completely. The evacuation before the typhoon was unpopular, but it was the right decision. Before that, a road project was very popular, but it caused flooding in one area, because people wanted the road and did not think about drainage. Public opinion shows leaders what people care about, but the public does not always have all the information. So leaders should listen carefully, but then make the final decision themselves.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCSo leaders should listen carefully, but then make the final decision themselves. The conclusion is presented as a short, separate final sentence introduced by "so", rather than being integrated into a longer closing statement. A 7.5 answer folds a similar idea into one flowing sentence using a participial clause instead of stopping there.结论是以一个由"so"引出的简短独立句呈现的,而不是被整合进一个更长的收尾陈述里。7.5分答案会用分词从句把类似的想法融入一句流畅的话里,而不是就此打住。

The correlative structure "listen closely enough to understand what people need, but not so closely that they only do whatever is popular" reflects 7.0's moderate complexity.关联结构"listen closely enough to understand what people need, but not so closely that they only do whatever is popular"体现出7.0分中等复杂度的特点。

I'd say leaders should listen closely enough to understand what people need, but not so closely that they only do whatever is popular. The evacuation was unpopular but correct, while a road scheme a few years earlier was popular and ended up flooding a whole district, because everyone wanted the road and nobody wanted to hear about drainage. Public opinion tells leaders where the pain points are and what people will accept, and a leader who completely ignores it risks becoming either a tyrant or unemployed. But the public usually lacks the information and time that leaders have, so in the end, leaders should listen, explain honestly, and then decide.

    • FCBut the public usually lacks the information and time that leaders have, so in the end, leaders should listen, explain honestly, and then decide. The concluding sentence chains three ideas with "so... and then", giving reasonable but fairly linear cohesion; a 7.5 version achieves a similarly layered ending but attaches an extra participial clause for a more integrated finish.结尾句用"so... and then"把三个想法串联起来,呈现出合理但比较线性的衔接;7.5分版本会实现类似的层次感收尾,但会再加上一个分词从句,让结尾更加融合。

    • GRAI'd say leaders should listen closely enough to understand what people need, but not so closely that they only do whatever is popularThe "enough... that... not so... that" correlative pattern shows solid complex grammar; a 7.5 answer opens with the same idea but strips it down to a bare fragment, requiring even more confident control of ellipsis."enough... that... not so... that"这种关联句式展示出扎实的复杂语法;7.5分答案会以同样的想法开篇,但把它精简成一个几乎没有多余成分的片段,需要对省略结构有更强的掌控自信。

The verbless fragment opener "Just enough to know where people are hurting, not so much that policy becomes whatever is popular this week" and the simile "its mood shifts like the weather" mark this as 7.5.无动词片段式开头"Just enough to know where people are hurting, not so much that policy becomes whatever is popular this week",以及明喻"its mood shifts like the weather",标志着这是一篇7.5分答案。

Just enough to know where people are hurting, not so much that policy becomes whatever is popular this week. The evacuation was unpopular yet correct; a road scheme a few years earlier was the opposite — popular, and it went on to flood an entire district, because everyone wanted the road and nobody wanted to hear about drainage. Public opinion is useful precisely because it reveals what matters to people and what they're willing to tolerate, and a leader who dismisses it outright tends to become either a tyrant or a former leader. Yet the public seldom has the information or the time a leader has, and its mood shifts like the weather. The honest approach is to listen, explain plainly, and then decide anyway, accepting that being right might still cost the next election.

    • FCJust enough to know where people are hurting, not so much that policy becomes whatever is popular this week.Opening with a verbless fragment that directly answers the question's "to what extent" phrasing shows an economical, confident cohesion device that lower bands avoid, both of which open instead with a fuller subject-verb sentence.用一个无动词片段开篇,直接回应了题目"to what extent"的问法,这是一种精简而自信的衔接手法,低分数段会避免这样做,而是用更完整的主谓句开篇。
    • LRits mood shifts like the weatherThe simile "shifts like the weather" is vivid and idiomatic, more evocative than a flatter equivalent like "opinion changes"; it shows genuine figurative control rather than literal description.明喻"shifts like the weather"生动而地道,比"opinion changes"这类平淡的说法更有画面感;它展示出真正的修辞掌控力,而不只是字面描述。
    • GRAa road scheme a few years earlier was the opposite — popular, and it went on to flood an entire districtThe dash introduces an appositive contrast ("the opposite — popular") before the clause continues, a flexible punctuation-driven structure; a lower band would more simply write "but it was popular" as a separate clause joined with "but".破折号引出一个同位式对比("the opposite — popular"),然后分句继续展开,这是一种灵活的、依靠标点符号驱动的结构;低分数段则会更简单地写成用"but"连接的独立分句"but it was popular"。

I think business leaders should think about the impact on society, and in my experience it is not really a sacrifice. When we turned down a gambling client, it cost us money for three months, but we got a better reputation, and that brought us better work later. Businesses need society, because society gives them workers, customers, and roads. Small businesses cannot always think about everything, but at least they should avoid causing clear harm. The best leaders also think about what kind of world their company is helping to create.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCThe best leaders also think about what kind of world their company is helping to create. This final idea is added as a new, separate sentence at the end rather than being connected back to the earlier point about avoiding harm. A 7.5 answer links the two with "and" inside one longer sentence, showing tighter overall cohesion.这个最后的想法是作为一个新的、独立的句子加在结尾的,而不是与前面关于"避免伤害"的观点联系起来。7.5分答案会用"and"把这两点连在一个更长的句子里,展示出更紧密的整体衔接。
    • LRit cost us money for three monthsThis is a literal, low-precision way of expressing lost income. Higher bands use the more idiomatic, business-register phrase "cost us a quarter's income".这是一种字面、精确度较低的表达失去收入的方式。更高分数段会使用更地道、更贴合商业语域的表达"cost us a quarter's income"。
    • GRABusinesses need society, because society gives them workers, customers, and roads.Repeating "society" as both subject and object in two clauses is grammatically correct but slightly clumsy. A 7.5 band avoids this repetition with a relative clause instead: "a society that supplies their workers, customers, roads and laws".在两个分句里把"society"既当主语又当宾语重复使用,语法上没错,但略显笨拙。7.5分会用一个定语从句来避免这种重复:"a society that supplies their workers, customers, roads and laws"。

I'd say yes, and honestly it's less of a sacrifice than people assume. Turning down a gambling client cost us a quarter's income, but it gained us a reputation that brought better work afterwards, so the interests of the business and of society lined up, just on different timescales. Businesses exist inside a society that supplies their workers, customers, roads and laws, so damaging that society really means damaging their own foundation. Of course, 'always' is a strong word, and a small business under pressure can't weigh every decision like a philosopher, but at minimum leaders should avoid clear harm.

    • FCOf course, 'always' is a strong word, and a small business under pressure can't weigh every decision like a philosopher, but at minimum leaders should avoid clear harm. The hedge "Of course" concedes a counterpoint smoothly before returning to the main argument, a more sophisticated move than simply listing points; the sentence is, however, quite long and relies on repeated "and... but" coordination rather than the varied punctuation a 7.5 answer uses for the equivalent idea.缓和语"Of course"很顺畅地先让步承认了一个反面观点,然后再回到主论点,这比单纯罗列观点要高明;不过这句话相当长,而且依靠反复的"and... but"并列结构,而不是7.5分答案针对同样想法所使用的多样化标点。
    • LRthe interests of the business and of society lined up, just on different timescales"Lined up... on different timescales" is a precise, slightly abstract way of expressing alignment, more developed than a plain "we got a better reputation"; it approaches but doesn't quite match the more vivid "turned out to be identical" phrasing used at 7.5."Lined up... on different timescales"是一种精确、略带抽象色彩的方式来表达"一致性",比平淡的"we got a better reputation"更成熟;它已经接近但还没有完全达到7.5分中更生动的"turned out to be identical"这种表达。
    • GRAso damaging that society really means damaging their own foundationThe parallel repetition of "damaging" across a cause-and-effect clause is a controlled rhetorical device; a 7.5 band achieves a similar effect but with a relative clause and the adverb "quietly" inserted mid-clause, showing slightly more flexible word placement.在因果分句中平行重复使用"damaging",是一种有控制力的修辞手法;7.5分会实现类似的效果,但会用一个定语从句,并在分句中间插入副词"quietly",展示出稍微更灵活的词序安排。
    7.5 分

The vivid closing image "turned out to be identical, just running on different timescales" and the compact noun phrase "the leaders worth admiring" mark this as 7.5.生动的收尾意象"turned out to be identical, just running on different timescales",以及紧凑的名词短语"the leaders worth admiring",标志着这是一篇7.5分答案。

Yes, and in my experience it's less of a sacrifice than it looks from the outside. Turning down a gambling client cost us a quarter's income and earned us a reputation that brought in better work — the interests of society and the business turned out to be identical, just running on different timescales. Businesses exist inside a society that supplies their workers, customers, roads and laws, and a company that damages that society is quietly damaging its own foundation. 'Always' is admittedly a strong word, and a small business under financial pressure can't weigh every decision like a philosopher. But the minimum is avoiding obvious harm, and the leaders worth admiring go further, asking what their company is making the world more like. Profit without that question tends to be short-lived.

    • FCthe interests of society and the business turned out to be identical, just running on different timescalesDescribing the two interests as "identical... on different timescales" resolves the whole argument in a single vivid image, a more unified and memorable closing move than a plainer "lined up" phrasing for the same idea.把两种利益描述为"identical... on different timescales",用一个生动的意象把整个论点收束起来,这比用平淡的"lined up"表达同样的想法要更统一、更令人印象深刻。
    • LRthe leaders worth admiring go further, asking what their company is making the world more like"The leaders worth admiring" is a compact, evaluative noun phrase doing the job that a lower band would need a full relative clause for, e.g. "leaders that I admire"; it shows economical, idiomatic control of English."The leaders worth admiring"是一个紧凑、带有评价色彩的名词短语,起到了低分数段需要用完整定语从句才能达到的效果,比如"leaders that I admire";它展示出精简、地道的英语掌控力。
    • GRAa company that damages that society is quietly damaging its own foundationInserting the adverb "quietly" between the auxiliary and main verb is a subtle, natural placement that shows fine-grained control of word order; lower bands tend to place adverbs only at clause boundaries.把副词"quietly"插入助动词和主要动词之间,是一种微妙而自然的位置安排,展示出对词序精细的掌控力;低分数段往往只会把副词放在分句边界处。
