The evaluation stays brief and plain ('quite successful, I think') and problems are reported in short, simply-linked sentences such as the one about the late flowers, giving a clear but modest account typical of Band 6.5.

The happy event I want to talk about was my cousin Vy's engagement ceremony in Hue, about six months ago. In Vietnam this is a big traditional event, so the whole family gets involved.

I prepared for about three weeks. My job was to design the invitation cards and a small photo board for the entrance, because I work in design. I also helped choose the colours for the decorations, mostly pink and gold, and I printed some photos of Vy and her fiance to put around the room.

My aunt helped me the most. She told me exactly what a traditional ceremony needs, because I didn't know all the rules, like how many trays of gifts there should be. My mother helped with the flowers, and my cousin Ha helped me carry everything from Da Nang to Hue the day before.

The preparations were quite successful, I think. The invitation cards looked nice, and everyone said the photo board was a good idea because guests took pictures next to it all day. There was a small problem with the flowers arriving late, but we fixed it in time. Vy was very happy with everything, and that made all the work worth it.

  • LRmostly pink and gold"Pink and gold" uses two of the most basic colour terms available rather than more specific or evocative alternatives (like "blush" or "champagne gold") that a designer describing her own colour choices might otherwise reach for, especially given her stated profession. The hedge "mostly" is the only qualifying word in the phrase, doing simple approximation work rather than any more precise scoping. This plainness is consistent with the Band 6.5 ceiling on lexical resource, even though the speaker's professional background could plausibly support richer colour vocabulary at a higher band."Pink and gold"用了两个最基础的颜色词,而不是一个设计师在描述自己的配色选择时——尤其考虑到她所说的职业——本可能会选用的更具体或更有画面感的说法(比如"blush"或"champagne gold")。
  • FCThe preparations were quite successful, I think. This sentence gives a direct, one-line evaluation of how the preparations went, using the hedge "I think" to soften the judgement rather than committing to a stronger or more specific claim. It functions as a topic sentence for the paragraph that follows, where the details (the cards, the photo board, the flower delay) actually substantiate the claim, so the plainness here is balanced by concrete support elsewhere. A Band 7.0 version might instead open with a more particular claim ("everyone said the photo board was the highlight") rather than a generic success statement, but this stating-then-supporting pattern is entirely functional at Band 6.5.
  • GRAThere was a small problem with the flowers arriving late, but we fixed it in time. The sentence sets up a problem-then-resolution structure using only the coordinator "but," rather than subordinating the problem ("although the flowers arrived late, we managed to fix it") or using a more complex time expression to show how the resolution happened. It's accurate and easy to follow, and "in time" is a useful, natural collocation, but the overall structure is the simple compound-sentence pattern the descriptor identifies as typical of Band 6.5 grammar. There's no elaboration on how the problem was fixed, which keeps the sentence short and self-contained.

The hedged, spoken opener 'How successful the preparations were, I'd say, was pretty good overall, though not perfect' develops a nuanced evaluation rather than a flat statement, and the understated phrase 'no small task' adds a touch of flexible vocabulary appropriate to Band 7.0. How successful the preparations were, I'd say, was pretty good overall, though not perfect'(要说准备工作有多成功,我觉得总体来说相当不错,虽然不算完美),展开的是一种有层次的评价,而不是一句平铺直叙的陈述;而带有轻描淡写意味的短语'no small task'(可不是件小事)则增添了一点符合7.0分水平的灵活词汇色彩。

The happy event I'd like to talk about was my younger brother's graduation party, which we held at our family home about a year ago, after he finished university.

I started preparing about two weeks beforehand, mostly in the evenings after work. My main job was decorating the living room and the small garden outside, since I'm reasonably good with that kind of thing. I bought balloons and fairy lights, printed some photos of him from over the years, and made a simple banner with his name and graduation year on it.

My mother helped me the most, honestly. She planned the whole menu and spent two full days cooking traditional dishes for around thirty guests, which is no small task in our kitchen. My father handled the drinks and borrowed extra chairs and tables from a neighbour, while my brother's best friend helped me hang the lights outside, since I'm not great with anything involving a ladder.

How successful the preparations were, I'd say, was pretty good overall, though not perfect. The banner I'd printed turned out slightly too small for the wall I'd planned to put it on, so I had to rearrange the whole layout of photos around it at the last minute, which was a bit stressful. Apart from that small hiccup, though, everything else went smoothly. The food was excellent, the garden looked genuinely festive once it got dark, and my brother said afterwards that it was one of the best days of his life.

Looking back, I think what made it work was mostly the fact that everyone took on a different job instead of all trying to do the same thing, which meant nothing got forgotten and nobody was completely exhausted by the end of it.

  • LRwhich is no small task in our kitchen'No small task' is an understated way of saying the cooking was a lot of work, chosen over a flatter phrase like 'it was a lot of work' that a 6.5 answer would use, which is the kind of flexible, natural collocation the 7.0 lexical descriptor rewards. The understatement also adds a light, appreciative tone toward the mother's effort feeding thirty guests, rather than stating the praise directly.'No small task'是一种含蓄的说法,用来表达"做饭是件大工程"这个意思,而不是用6.5分答案会用的平淡说法'it was a lot of work',这正是7.0分词汇描述所看重的那种自然、灵活的搭配。
  • FCHow successful the preparations were, I'd say, was pretty good overall, though not perfect. The hedge 'I'd say' softens the evaluation into a personal opinion rather than a flat fact, and 'though not perfect' immediately qualifies the positive verdict, together producing a nuanced, two-sided assessment rather than a simple 'it went well'. This kind of qualified, developed evaluation is exactly the reason-plus-example structure the 7.0 fluency descriptor rewards, setting up the specific banner problem described in the next sentence.
  • GRAApart from that small hiccup, though, everything else went smoothly.Fronting 'Apart from that small hiccup' rather than starting with the subject 'everything' varies the sentence's usual word order for emphasis, a small but genuine sign of comfortable grammatical control beyond the most basic subject-first patterns a 6.5 answer would stick to. It also efficiently ties this sentence back to the banner problem mentioned just before, showing the answer is structured as connected narrative rather than a list of separate facts.把'Apart from that small hiccup'放在句首,而不是以主语'everything'开头,改变了句子通常的词序以达到强调效果,这是一个虽小却真实的信号,表明说话者具备超越6.5分答案会固守的最基础主语在前句式的从容语法掌控力。

Reframing the evaluation as 'best measured by what went wrong, which was almost nothing' is a sophisticated, indirect way to answer the question, and the wry aside 'which sounded poetic in January and turned out to mean weeks of phoning relatives' shows confident, idiomatic control.把评价重新表述为'best measured by what went wrong, which was almost nothing'(最好的衡量标准其实是看出了什么岔子,而几乎什么岔子都没出),是一种巧妙、间接的作答方式;而带点自嘲意味的插入语'which sounded poetic in January and turned out to mean weeks of phoning relatives'(这话在一月份听起来挺诗意,结果却意味着好几个星期打电话给亲戚)则展现出自信、地道的语言掌控力。

The event I'd talk about was my grandmother's eighty-fifth birthday last February, which in Vietnam is a proper occasion — a longevity celebration, with the whole family, red clothes, and a formal ceremony where the children and grandchildren bow and offer wishes.

How I prepared for it took about two months, mostly in the evenings. My part was the album. I decided to collect eighty-five photographs of her life, one for each year, which sounded poetic in January and turned out to mean weeks of phoning relatives, scanning old prints in my parents' house, and once driving to an aunt in Quảng Trị to borrow a single photograph from 1962 that nobody else had. I designed the book myself, which was the one part of the whole event that fell inside my skills.

Who helped was, first, my sister, who ran everything else from a spreadsheet: the tent for the courtyard, the food for sixty people, the order of the ceremony, the seating of relatives who don't speak to each other. My mother handled the cooking with three neighbours. My father borrowed the tent from the pagoda and was in charge of chairs. And my grandmother's oldest friend, who is eighty-seven, quietly told me which photographs my grandmother would not want in the album, which saved me from two serious mistakes.

How successful the preparations were is best measured by what went wrong, which was almost nothing. It rained all week and stopped at eight on the morning itself. Sixty people were fed. The relatives who don't speak sat at opposite corners and were civil. When we gave her the album, she turned the pages very slowly, naming people, and cried at the 1962 photograph, which was of her own mother. She kept it on her lap for the rest of the day and wouldn't let anyone else hold it. I've designed a lot of things people have paid for. That's the only one I'd save from a fire.

  • LRwhich sounded poetic in January and turned out to mean weeks of phoning relativesThe contrast between "sounded poetic" and "turned out to mean weeks of phoning relatives" is a compact irony: elevated, almost literary language deliberately undercut by mundane, concrete drudgery -- precisely the kind of figurative touch "if it fits the moment" the Band 7.5 lexical target rewards, used with wit rather than decoration for its own sake. A 7.0 answer would more plainly state "it sounded nice but was actually a lot of work"; here the humour itself signals confident control of register."sounded poetic" 与 "turned out to mean weeks of phoning relatives" 之间的对比构成了一种精巧的反讽:华丽近乎文学化的措辞,被说话者自己用琐碎具体的苦差事轻轻拆穿——这正是Band 7.5词汇标准所奖励的那种"在合适的时机使用比喻色彩",用得机智而非纯粹为了装饰。Band 7.0的答案更可能直白地说"it sounded nice but was actually a lot of work";而这里的幽默本身就展现出对语域的自信掌控。
  • FCHow successful the preparations were is best measured by what went wrong, which was almost nothing.Instead of directly answering "how successful were the preparations" with an adjective, the speaker inverts the question into a measurement framework ("best measured by what went wrong") before immediately deflating it with "almost nothing" -- a genuinely evaluative, structurally unusual move that goes beyond the single reflective point the Band 7.5 fluency and coherence target asks for, since it reshapes the whole paragraph's organizing logic rather than just adding a comment at the end. A 7.0 speaker would likely just say "I think it went really well" and move straight to examples. I think it went really well",然后直接进入举例。
  • GRAIt rained all week and stopped at eight on the morning itself. Two short coordinated clauses of near-identical length sit side by side with minimal connective tissue, letting the dramatic irony -- rain stopping at exactly the right moment -- speak for itself instead of being explained. This deliberate pacing, choosing brevity over elaboration, is part of the "mostly error-free," confidently varied control the Band 7.5 grammar target rewards; a lower band would likely over-explain the coincidence ("Luckily, it stopped raining just before the event started").

The plain declarative 'Apps and tools don't matter that much' keeps the reasoning simple and direct, without any hedging or elaboration.平实的陈述句 'Apps and tools don't matter that much' 让论证保持简单直接,没有任何缓和语或详细阐述。

I think the best way is to copy someone who is already organised, and start with something small. I'm not naturally tidy, but when I made a photo album, I copied my sister's method — just one list, checked every morning. Being organised is really about a few simple habits, like writing things down instead of trying to remember them. Apps and tools don't matter that much. Doing one project properly teaches you more than reading a book about it.

    • FCI think the best way isThis states the position immediately with no hedging, typical of 6.5's directness. The 7.0 version opens with 'Honestly, I think most people learn by...', adding a spoken hedge, while 7.5 uses a more compact inverted structure ('By copying someone... I'd argue') showing more flexible sentence control. 7.0版本以 'Honestly, I think most people learn by...'
    • LRnot naturally tidyThe plain adjective 'tidy' stands in loosely for 'organised', showing limited vocabulary range. 7.0 uses the more precise 'never been naturally organised', and 7.5 pairs the same idea with the idiom 'got the knack' elsewhere, showing a wider lexical range. 7.0使用了更精确的 'never been naturally organised';7.5则在别处用习语 'got the knack' 来搭配同样的想法,展现出更宽广的词汇范围。
    • GRAApps and tools don't matter that much.A short simple sentence with no subordination, typical of 6.5's plain grammar. 7.0 embeds the same idea in a semicolon-linked complex sentence, and 7.5 extends it further with parallel structure and idiom, showing more sophisticated sentence architecture.

The hedge 'Honestly, I think' and the semicolon-linked reasoning in 'Tools help less than people assume; a good habit on paper beats a fancy app used badly' add a layer of natural spoken reflection.缓和语 'Honestly, I think' 以及分号连接的论证 'Tools help less than people assume; a good habit on paper beats a fancy app used badly',增添了一层自然的口语化反思。

Honestly, I think most people learn by copying someone who already has the skill, and starting small rather than trying to overhaul everything at once. I'd never been naturally organised, but when I put together a photo album, I copied my sister's method — one list, in one place, checked every morning. To be fair, organisation is mostly just a handful of habits: writing things down instead of trusting your memory, and breaking big tasks into pieces you can actually finish in an evening. Tools help less than people assume; a good habit on paper beats a fancy app used badly.

    • FCHonestly, I thinkThis spoken hedge opening signals natural reflection appropriate to 7.0, more developed than 6.5's flat statement but less compact than 7.5's inserted, mid-sentence hedge.
    • LRoverhaul everything at onceThis phrase shows more phrasal precision than 6.5's plain 'start with something small', though it is not as idiomatic as 7.5's 'personality overhaul'.
    • GRATools help less than people assume; a good habit on paper beats a fancy app used badly. The semicolon-linked complex sentence shows controlled subordination beyond 6.5's simple sentence, though it is less dense than 7.5's version, which adds further parallelism.

The idiomatic 'personality overhaul' and the closing observation that 'organised people aren't secretly list-lovers, they just dislike chaos a fraction more than the rest of us' give the answer a vivid, evaluative finish.地道的表达 'personality overhaul',以及收尾的观察 'organised people aren't secretly list-lovers, they just dislike chaos a fraction more than the rest of us',为答案带来了一个生动、具评价性的收尾。

By copying someone who's already got the knack, I'd argue, and starting small rather than attempting a total personality overhaul. I've never been naturally organised, and the album only came together because I borrowed my sister's system wholesale: one list, one place, checked religiously every morning. Organisation, stripped down, is mostly a handful of habits — writing things down instead of relying on memory, deciding when as well as what, chopping big tasks into evening-sized chunks. Tools help less than people imagine; a solid habit scrawled on paper beats a neglected app every time. And accepting you'll never actually enjoy it helps too — organised people aren't secretly list-lovers, they just dislike chaos a fraction more than the rest of us.

    • FCI'd argueThis evaluative hedge is inserted mid-sentence rather than placed at the front, showing more flexible integration of stance than 7.0's front-loaded 'Honestly, I think'.
    • LRborrowed my sister's system wholesaleThe idiomatic collocation 'wholesale' is precise and vivid, going beyond 7.0's plainer 'copied my sister's method'.
    • GRAorganised people aren't secretly list-lovers, they just dislike chaos a fraction more than the rest of usThis compact, comma-spliced spoken-register construction, with the compound noun 'list-lovers', shows flexible, idiomatic grammar control beyond the semicolon structures of 7.0.

The plain listing 'exams, interviews, weddings or flights' states the situations directly, with the simple connector 'because' doing all the reasoning work.

It's important when a mistake would be very costly and can't be fixed later. For example, cooking lunch for sixty people can't be done at the last minute, but a birthday speech can, and mine was. So situations like exams, interviews, weddings or flights need real preparation, because there's no second chance. It also matters when other people's safety depends on you, like a teacher or a pilot. But some things, like a normal conversation or a holiday, are actually better a bit unprepared.

    • FCFor example,This is a basic, front-loaded connector used to introduce the illustration, typical of 6.5's plain cohesion. 7.0 instead folds the example into the main sentence with a dash, and 7.5 opens directly with the example itself, showing more fluent integration.
    • LRvery costlyA simple intensifier plus adjective; adequate but generic, compared with 7.5's more precise 'steep'.
    • GRAIt's important when a mistake would be very costly and can't be fixed later.A simple compound sentence joined with 'and', with no subordination, typical of plain 6.5 grammar.

The hedge 'I'd say it matters most' and the subordinate clause 'since there's no second attempt' show more natural, reasoned spoken phrasing than a flat statement.缓和语 'I'd say it matters most' 以及从句 'since there's no second attempt',展现出比一个平铺直叙的陈述句更自然、更有理有据的口语化表达。

I'd say it matters most when the cost of getting it wrong is high and can't be fixed on the spot. Sixty people needing lunch at noon can't really be improvised, whereas a birthday speech can be, and honestly mine was. So anything with a fixed moment — an exam, a wedding, a flight, a surgery — needs proper preparation, since there's no second attempt. It also matters whenever other people's safety or wellbeing depends on you being ready, like teaching a class.

    • FCI'd say it matters mostThis hedge softens the opening claim in a natural spoken way, more developed than 6.5's blunt 'It's important when', though less compact than 7.5's mid-sentence 'to be honest'.
    • LRcan't really be improvisedThe intensifying adverb 'really' adds natural emphasis, a small but genuine step up in phrasing control from the plain 'can't be done at the last minute' in 6.5.强调副词 'really' 增添了自然的语气强调,比6.5分中平实的 'can't be done at the last minute',在措辞掌控力上有一个虽小却真实的提升。
    • GRAsince there's no second attemptA subordinate clause with 'since' replaces 6.5's coordinated 'because' clause, showing slightly more varied sentence construction, though still less packed than 7.5's parenthetical structures.

The mid-sentence hedge 'to be honest' and the closing 'the real skill lies in telling the two apart' give the answer a fluent, evaluative shape rather than a flat list.句中的缓和语 'to be honest' 以及收尾的 'the real skill lies in telling the two apart',让答案呈现出一种流畅、具评价性的结构,而不是一份平铺的列举。

Whenever the cost of failure is steep and can't be patched up on the day, to be honest. Sixty people expecting lunch at noon simply cannot be improvised; a birthday speech can, and mine certainly was. So anything with a fixed, unrepeatable moment — an exam, an interview, a wedding, a flight — demands real preparation, because there's no second attempt once it's underway. The same goes for anything involving other people's safety, or where others are relying on you to be ready, like leading a team. Curiously, though, some things are better left slightly unprepared — a conversation, a holiday, a rough first draft — and the real skill lies in telling the two apart, since most of us over-prepare the trivial and under-prepare the things that actually matter.

    • FCto be honestThis hedge sits mid-sentence rather than fronting the whole answer, a more fluid integration of stance than 7.0's sentence-initial 'I'd say'.
    • LRsteepThis precise, vivid adjective replaces the generic 'high' or 'very costly' used at lower bands, showing more natural lexical choice.
    • GRAthe real skill lies in telling the two apartThis idiomatic verb phrase in a compact final clause shows more flexible, natural grammar than 7.0's plainer closing 'so it's really about knowing which situation you're in'.这个地道的动词短语,放在一个紧凑的收尾分句中,比7.0分中更平淡的收尾 'so it's really about knowing which situation you're in' 展现出更灵活、更自然的语法。

Governments should avoid taking risks in areas where ordinary people would suffer if it went wrong. A nearby province tried a new flood-defence plan that failed in the first big storm, and it was the families whose homes flooded who paid, not the officials. So governments should be careful with public health, food safety, and people's savings and pensions. They should also avoid risks with things that can't be reversed, like the environment. But small experiments, like a new programme in one area, are fine because they can be stopped if they fail.

    • FCGovernments should avoid taking risks in areas whereThis restates the question directly as an opening, with no hedge, typical of plain 6.5 cohesion. 7.0 instead opens with the hedge 'I'd say governments should steer clear of risk', and 7.5 opens with a hedge inserted mid-clause, showing more integrated stance-taking. 7.0则以缓和语 'I'd say governments should steer clear of risk' 开篇;7.5的开场则把缓和语插入到分句中间,展现出更融合的立场表达方式。
    • LRflood-defence planThis is an adequate but generic collocation, compared with 7.5's more vivid pairing of 'flood-defence scheme' with the verbs 'rolled out' and 'collapsed'.
    • GRABut small experiments, like a new programme in one area, are fine because they can be stopped if they fail.A simple sentence with one embedded example and a single 'because' clause, showing limited subordination compared with the parenthetical, cleft structures used at 7.0 and 7.5.

The phrasal verb 'steer clear of' and the cleft structure 'Where governments can afford to gamble is with things that fail small' add natural, reasoned spoken phrasing.短语动词 'steer clear of' 以及分裂句结构 'Where governments can afford to gamble is with things that fail small',增添了自然、有理有据的口语化措辞。

I'd say governments should steer clear of risk wherever the people affected never actually chose it. A nearby province, for instance, tried an experimental flood-defence scheme a few years back, and when it failed in the first big storm, it was the families whose homes flooded who paid for it, not the officials who approved the plan. So public health, food and water safety, and the money people rely on for pensions clearly need caution, and so does anything irreversible, like the environment or heritage sites. Where governments can afford to gamble is with things that fail small and can be reversed — pilot programmes or limited trials, say — because nobody gets hurt badly if those don't work out.

    • FCI'd say governments should steer clear of riskThe hedge 'I'd say' is integrated naturally into the opening claim, a more developed move than 6.5's bare restatement of the question.
    • LRsteer clear ofThis idiomatic phrasal verb is more natural and native-sounding than 6.5's plain 'avoid', though not as colourful as 7.5's 'take a punt'.
    • GRAWhere governments can afford to gamble is with things that fail small and can be reversed — pilot programmes or limited trials, say — because nobody gets hurt badly if those don't work out. This cleft sentence ('Where... is with...') with a parenthetical aside shows more grammatical sophistication than 6.5's single coordinated clause.这个分裂句('Where... is with...')

Wherever the people bearing the risk never actually chose it, honestly. A nearby province rolled out an experimental flood-defence scheme a few years ago that collapsed in the first serious storm, and the ones who paid for that gamble were the families whose homes flooded, not the officials who'd signed off on it. So governments ought to tread carefully around public health, food and water safety, the savings and pensions people depend on, and anything irreversible, like the environment or cultural heritage — national security goes without saying. Where they can afford to take a punt is with things that fail small and bounce back: pilot programmes, limited trials, experiments that can be quietly shelved. The underlying principle, I'd say, is that the state can gamble with its own convenience, never with people's lives.

The main benefit is growth, and finding out what actually works. Taking risks lets a business try new markets and learn things that safer competitors never learn. It also attracts people who want to do something ambitious. They also tend to attract ambitious people, who rarely stick around in safe, stagnant places. Growth, mainly, and the discovery of what actually works — a business that never risks anything simply repeats last year until someone braver comes along and replaces it. A couple of years ago our studio took the risk of turning down easy commercial work to focus on healthcare, a field nobody there knew the first thing about, and that gamble now pays for half our salaries. Risk-taking lets companies break into new markets, try what competitors haven't dared, and learn from failures that their more cautious rivals never get to experience. It also draws in ambitious people, who simply don't linger in safe places. The trick, of course, is keeping the risk calculated: small enough to survive, big enough to matter, taken with eyes wide open. Earlier generations lived through war and hunger, so their idea of risk was shaped by having actually lost things, and security became the main goal. Young people now, by contrast, tend to have a safety net of family behind them, plus a culture that celebrates founders and travellers, so risk looks more like opportunity than danger. My grandmother, who spent eighty-five years within a single province and considered a train journey an adventure, and my cousin, who quit a stable job to sell coffee online with no savings and no plan whatsoever, are basically the two ends of the shift. Earlier generations lived through war and hunger, and that shaped an attitude to risk built on having lost things — security was the whole point. Young people nowadays tend to have a family safety net behind them, plus a culture that practically celebrates founders and travellers, so risk reads as opportunity rather than danger. At the same time, curiously, some risks people once simply put up with — physical danger at work, uncertain medicine — are now considered unacceptable. So, on balance, people take more chosen risks and tolerate fewer imposed ones, which is probably progress.

Honestly, the biggest help is deciding things the night before rather than in the morning. During the album weeks, I started writing my next day's three main tasks on a card each evening, and the mornings arrived already decided, which removed what used to be the worst hour of the day. Sleep is the real foundation, though — nothing else works properly without it. A fixed routine for the first hour also saves willpower for the actual work, and preparing physical things the night before, like your bag or lunch, sounds trivial but genuinely isn't. I'd also say leaving a bit of margin in your schedule is underrated, since a late bus shouldn't be able to ruin your whole morning.

The idiom 'nibbled away' and the compact opener 'more than anything else' give the answer a vivid, economical finish.

Deciding the day before it even starts, more than anything else. During the album weeks I got into the habit of writing the next day's three main tasks on a card each night, and the mornings would arrive already decided, which quietly removed what used to be the worst hour of the day — preparing for an ordinary day is mostly a matter of stripping decisions out of the morning. Sleep is the non-negotiable foundation underneath all of it. A fixed routine for the first hour saves willpower for the work that actually matters, and laying out the physical things the night before — bag, clothes, lunch — sounds trivial and genuinely isn't. Knowing what the one important task is stops the day being nibbled away by small ones. And a little margin built into the schedule, so a late bus doesn't derail everything, is the most underrated preparation of all.

I think the best way is to let children do things themselves and let them fail sometimes. My sister made her daughter pack her own school bag from the age of six, and for a year the girl forgot things, like her shoes once, but my sister never rescued her. Now at eleven she's the most organised person in the house. Parents can also help by showing good habits themselves, and by giving children real jobs, not just pretend ones. Checklists work well for younger children too. What doesn't work is preparing everything for them and then telling them to be more organised.

Beyond that, parents can teach preparation by modelling it themselves, by handing children real responsibility instead of pretend responsibility, and by clearly connecting the preparation to the result. I think it's partly natural but mostly learned, and I'm a good example of that. My sister was organised even as a small child, but I was messy until my thirties, and I only became organised for about two months when I was making the album. So some people naturally like order more than others. But things like making lists and planning ahead can be learned by anyone. I think what might be natural is how much chaos a person can stand — some people hate it and get organised, others don't really notice it.

I'd say it's partly natural, but mostly learned, and I'm honestly the evidence for the second part. My sister was organised as a child, always lining up her toys by size, whereas I was pretty chaotic until my thirties and only became organised for about two months, when the album forced me to. That suggests the ability was probably there all along, but the habit wasn't. To be fair, the actual methods — lists, planning, breaking big tasks down — can be learned by almost anyone, and plenty of organised adults were disorganised children who eventually found a system. What might genuinely be natural is a person's tolerance for chaos rather than the organising itself.

Partly natural, mostly learned, and I'm basically the evidence for the second half of that. My sister was organised from the start, lining up her toys by size as a toddler, while I was chaos incarnate until my thirties and only pulled myself together for about two months, precisely when the album demanded it — which suggests the ability was there all along, just not the habit. Some people clearly have a natural liking for order that makes the whole thing easier. But the methods themselves — lists, planning, breaking things into pieces — can be picked up by more or less anyone, and plenty of tidy adults were once disorganised children who stumbled onto a system. What may actually be innate is the tolerance for chaos: some people simply can't stand it, others barely register it. The skill, in other words, is available to everyone; the motivation isn't.

    • LRpick up the slackThis idiomatic phrase is more vivid and natural than 7.0's plainer 'carry the load'.
    • GRAPure chaos is entertaining for about a day, and then it just becomes everyone else's problem.A coordinated clause with the temporal shift 'and then' builds a punchy two-part closing structure, more rhetorically effective than 7.0's single plain closing sentence.
