6.5 分

The 6.5 answer covers all four cue-card points with short, plain sentences ('She came to my desk looking very worried') and simple time connectors, giving a clear but modest account typical of Band 6.5.这篇6.5分的答案用简短、朴素的句子('She came to my desk looking very worried')和简单的时间连接词,覆盖了提示卡的全部四个要点,给出了一个清晰但朴素的叙述,是6.5分典型的特征。

I'll talk about a time when I helped a new intern at my design studio in Da Nang. She was called Vy, and it was her second week when she accidentally deleted the main folder for a client project the night before we had to show it to them.

She came to my desk looking very worried and told me what happened. I could see she was close to panicking, so I told her to calm down first. Then I checked our cloud backup system, and luckily I found an earlier version of the files from that morning. It wasn't the newest version, but it saved most of her work.

It wasn't too difficult to solve in the end, mainly because we had backups set up already. I just had to explain the backup system to her calmly and help her find the right folder.

I felt quite good about helping her, honestly. She was very relieved and thanked me a lot afterwards, and I remember thinking that this was exactly the kind of situation where a bit of calm experience really helps a stressed new colleague.

  • LRclose to panickingThis common collocation pairs a simple preposition phrase with an everyday noun to describe Vy's emotional state plainly, without reaching for a more varied description. A 7.0 answer might add a specific physical detail instead; a 7.5 answer might use a more figurative description. Here the phrase accurately conveys the urgency of the situation using the safe, familiar lexical choices typical of Band 6.5.这个常见的搭配把一个简单的介词短语和一个日常名词配对在一起,朴素地描述了阿薇的情绪状态,没有追求更丰富的描述。7.0分答案可能会转而加入一个具体的身体细节;7.5分答案可能会使用更具比喻性的描述。这里这个短语准确传达了局势的紧迫感,使用的是6.5分典型的安全、熟悉的词汇选择。
  • FCI checked our cloud backup system, and luckily I found an earlier version of the files from that morningThis sentence reports two sequential actions joined simply with 'and', delivering the key turning point of the story in a single straightforward clause without pausing to add reflection. A 7.0 answer would likely add a brief reaction to finding the backup; a 7.5 answer might restructure the sentence around the relief itself. The plain, sequential narration here gives clear but minimal development, matching Band 6.5's direct storytelling style.这个句子用'and'简单地连接了两个先后发生的动作,用一个直白的单一分句交代了故事的关键转折点,没有停下来加入反思。7.0分答案可能会加入一句对找到备份的简短反应;7.5分答案可能会围绕那种如释重负的感觉重新组织句子。这里这种朴素的顺叙给出了清晰但极少展开的叙述,符合6.5分直白的讲故事风格。
  • GRAI just had to explain the backup system to her calmlyThe adverb 'calmly' is added onto a simple 'had to' structure as the only extra detail, without further subordination or restructuring the sentence. A 7.0 answer would likely combine this with a reason clause in the same sentence; a 7.5 answer might integrate the calmness more centrally into the description. This modest addition is accurate and functional, representing the basic-to-moderate complexity Band 6.5 grammar typically reaches.副词'calmly'作为唯一的额外细节被添加到了一个简单的'had to'结构上,没有进一步的从属结构或句子重组。7.0分答案可能会把这和一个理由从句结合进同一个句子;7.5分答案可能会把“从容”这一特质更核心地融入描述之中。这个不起眼的添加是准确且功能性的,代表了6.5分语法通常能达到的基础到中等的复杂度。
7.0 分

The 7.0 answer adds reflection, such as noting the real task 'was calming her down enough to think clearly', and links ideas with natural connectors like 'honestly' and 'mainly because', while grammar stays accurate but not highly varied.这篇7.0分的答案加入了反思,比如指出真正的任务“was calming her down enough to think clearly”,并用“honestly”、“mainly because”这类自然的连接词把想法连接起来,同时语法保持准确,但没有高度的多样性。

This is about a new intern at my design studio, Vy, who'd only been with us about two weeks when she accidentally deleted the main folder for a client project — the night before we were due to present it.

She came straight to my desk, clearly panicking, and explained what had happened. My first instinct was just to get her to breathe and stop apologising, because that wasn't going to fix anything. Then I checked our cloud backup, and thankfully found a version from earlier that morning — not perfect, but it saved most of her work.

It honestly wasn't that hard to fix, mainly because we already had decent backups in place; the real task was calming her down enough to think clearly and walking her through where everything was.

I felt genuinely good about it afterwards. She thanked me more times than necessary, and it reminded me that when you're new somewhere, having one person who stays calm and just quietly fixes things with you can matter more than the actual solution itself.

  • FCMy first instinct was just to get her to breathe and stop apologising, because that wasn't going to fix anythingThis sentence interrupts a simple narrative report with a brief piece of interpretation — explaining WHY the speaker prioritised calming Vy down — rather than just stating the action taken. A 6.5 answer would likely state only 'I told her to calm down' without this reasoning; a 7.5 answer might develop the reasoning into a broader observation. This kind of small but genuine reflective addition is exactly the fuller development 7.0 rewards.这个句子打断了一个简单的叙述性陈述,插入了一小段解读——解释说话者为什么优先让阿薇冷静下来——而不只是陈述所采取的行动。6.5分答案可能只会陈述'I told her to calm down',不加这层推理;7.5分答案可能会把这层推理发展成一个更宽泛的观察。这种虽小但真实的反思性补充,正是7.0分所奖励的那种更充分的展开。
  • LRthanked me more times than necessaryThis mildly wry comparative phrase ('more...than necessary') implies gentle amusement at Vy's over-thanking rather than a flat statement like 'she thanked me a lot'. A 6.5 answer would likely use that plainer alternative; a 7.5 answer might extend the humour further. Here the phrase adds a touch of personality and natural, flexible vocabulary beyond the plainest lexical choices, typical of 7.0.这个略带诙谐意味的比较短语('more...than necessary')暗示了对阿薇过度道谢的一种温和的会心一笑,而不是像'she thanked me a lot'这样平淡的陈述。6.5分答案很可能会使用那种更朴素的说法;7.5分答案可能会把幽默感进一步延展。这里这个短语增添了一丝个性色彩和自然、灵活的词汇,超越了最朴素的词汇选择,是7.0分的典型特征。
  • GRAhaving one person who stays calm and just quietly fixes things with you can matter more than the actual solution itselfThis long noun clause, headed by the gerund 'having', functions as the subject of 'can matter more than', packing a generalised observation into one extended, accurately controlled sentence rather than several short ones. A 6.5 answer would likely simplify this into separate plain sentences; a 7.5 answer might restructure it with more varied punctuation. This comfortable, accurate complexity is typical of the grammatical range Band 7.0 targets.这个由动名词'having'引导的长名词分句,充当了'can matter more than'的主语,把一个概括性的观察塞进了一个延展、精确掌控的句子,而不是几个短句。6.5分答案可能会把这简化成独立的朴素句子;7.5分答案可能会用更丰富的标点符号重新组织它。这种从容、准确的复杂度是Band 7.0所瞄准的语法范围的典型特征。
7.5 分

The 7.5 answer uses vivid, precise detail ('practically ran to my desk, mid-apology before she'd even sat down') and a reflective closing generalisation about starting a new job, the kind of developed, evaluative writing typical of Band 7.5.这篇7.5分的答案使用了生动、精确的细节('practically ran to my desk, mid-apology before she'd even sat down')和一个关于初入新工作的反思性总结收尾,这是Band 7.5典型的那种成熟、评价性的写作。

I'll describe a moment with Vy, a new intern at my design studio in Da Nang, who'd been with us barely two weeks when she accidentally wiped the main folder for a client project the night before we were due to present it.

She practically ran to my desk, mid-apology before she'd even sat down, and blurted out what had happened. My first move wasn't to fix anything — it was just to get her to stop apologising long enough to breathe. Then I dug through our cloud backup and, thankfully, turned up a version from that morning; not the very latest, but close enough to save most of her work.

Fixing it was actually the easy part, since we already had solid backups in place. The harder job was talking her down enough that she could think straight and follow me through where everything lived.

Honestly, I still think about it fondly. She thanked me about ten times more than the situation warranted, and it left me with this quiet realisation that being new somewhere is less about avoiding mistakes and more about knowing someone will stay calm and sort it out alongside you when they inevitably happen.

修复其实是最简单的部分,因为我们本来就设置了可靠的备份。更难的部分是安抚她,让她冷静到能理清思路,然后跟着我一步步搞清楚所有东西都在哪里。

199 词 · 约 2 分钟

为什么是这个分数

  • GRApractically ran to my desk, mid-apology before she'd even sat downThe participial phrase 'mid-apology before she'd even sat down' is folded directly into the main clause as an extra descriptive layer rather than expressed as a separate sentence, compressing two simultaneous actions — arriving and apologising — into one economical, vividly staged image. A Band 6.5 or 7.0 speaker would more likely split this into two plain sentences. The physical staging also does narrative work, showing Vy's panic rather than simply naming it.分词短语'mid-apology before she'd even sat down'被直接折叠进主句,作为一层额外的描述性细节,而不是表达成一个独立的句子,把两个同时发生的动作——到达和道歉——压缩进一个简练、画面感十足的意象里。Band 6.5或7.0的答案更可能把这拆成两个朴素的句子。这种画面调度也承担了叙事功能,展现出了阿薇的恐慌,而不只是简单地点出它。
  • FCless about avoiding mistakes and more about knowing someone will stay calm and sort it out alongside youThis parallel 'less about X, more about Y' construction reframes the whole anecdote into a general truth about starting a new job, a genuinely less-common rhetorical move rather than a flat closing statement like 'I was happy I could help her.' A 6.5 or 7.0 answer would be far more likely to end on the plain feeling rather than this reframing. It gives the answer's ending real weight, tying the specific backup-folder incident to a broader idea about workplace mentorship.这个平行的'less about X, more about Y'结构,把整个小故事重新框定成了一条关于初入新工作的普遍真理,这是一种真正不常见的修辞手法,而不是像'I was happy I could help her'这样平淡的收尾陈述。6.5或7.0分答案更可能以这种朴素的感受来结尾,而不是进行这种重新框定。这为答案的结尾带来了真正的分量,把这个具体的备份文件夹事件和一个关于职场引导的更宽泛的想法联系了起来。
  • LRthanked me about ten times more than the situation warrantedThe exaggerated but controlled phrase 'ten times more than the situation warranted' is a wry, precise way of describing over-gratitude, a genuinely less-common construction compared to a safe pairing like 'thanked me a lot'. A 6.5 or 7.0 speaker would very likely default to that plainer alternative. The slightly ironic tone also signals the narrator's self-aware, understated personality, consistent with the reflective close that follows.这个夸张但克制的短语'ten times more than the situation warranted',是一种诙谐、精确的方式来描述过度的感激,与'thanked me a lot'这样安全的搭配相比,是一种真正不常见的结构。6.5或7.0分的说话者很可能会默认使用那种更朴素的说法。这种略带反讽的语气也标志着叙述者那种自我觉察、含蓄的个性,与后面的反思性收尾相呼应。

  1. 1. What types of jobs do people do that help other people?

    6.5 分

The 6.5 answer opens with a plain list and closes with a direct summary sentence starting with "So", giving a simple opinion and one plain example without much elaboration.这篇6.5分的答案以一个朴素的清单开头,并以一句用“So”开头的直接总结句结尾,给出了一个简单的观点和一个朴素的例子,没有太多展开。

Doctors, nurses and teachers are the most obvious jobs that help people, but there are many others too, like social workers and firefighters. I think these jobs need patience, because the people they help are often stressed or in trouble. For example, my uncle has a small restaurant in Hue, and he sometimes gives free meals to old regular customers who don't have much money. So helping people isn't only about a job title, it's about how someone treats others.

    查看中文翻译

    医生、护士和教师是最明显的助人职业,但还有很多其他的,比如社工和消防员。我认为这些职业都需要耐心,因为他们所帮助的人往往处于压力或困境之中。比如说,我叔叔在顺化开了一家小餐馆,他有时候会给那些手头拮据的老熟客提供免费的餐食。所以帮助别人不只是关乎职业头衔,而是关乎一个人对待他人的方式。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCSo helping people isn't only about a job titleThis short summarising sentence, opened with the plain connector "So", is exactly how a 6.5 answer wraps up: it restates the point in the most basic linking word available. A 7.0 or 7.5 answer would more likely use a softer, spoken hedge like "honestly" or "I'd argue" instead of jumping straight to a bare conclusion.这个以朴素连接词“So”开头的简短总结句,正是6.5分答案惯常的收尾方式:用现有最基础的连接词重述论点。7.0或7.5分答案更可能使用更柔和的口语化缓冲语,比如“honestly”或“I'd argue”,而不是直接跳到一个赤裸裸的结论。
    • LRdon't have much money"Don't have much money" is plain, everyday vocabulary doing an adequate but unremarkable job. A higher band would reach for a more specific collocation, such as "short on cash", which is exactly what the 7.0/7.5 versions use instead.“Don't have much money”是朴素的日常词汇,能够胜任但并不出彩。更高分段会选用更具体的搭配,比如“short on cash”,这正是7.0/7.5版本所使用的表达。
    • GRAFor example, my uncle has a small restaurant in Hue, and he sometimes gives free meals to old regular customers who don't have much money. This is a simple compound sentence joined with "and", the kind of coordination a 6.5 answer relies on instead of embedding ideas. A 7.5 answer would likely compress this into a single sentence with a participial phrase, such as "running a modest restaurant in Hue".这是一个用“and”连接的简单并列句,是6.5分答案依赖的那种并列结构,而不是把想法嵌套起来。7.5分答案很可能会把这压缩成一个带有分词短语的单句,比如“running a modest restaurant in Hue”。
    7.0 分

The 7.0 answer adds a mild qualifying remark with "even though it's not officially a caring profession" and closes on the natural spoken hedge "To be fair", both signs of comfortable, reflective spoken English.这篇7.0分的答案加入了一句温和的限定说明——“even though it's not officially a caring profession”——并以自然的口语化缓冲语“To be fair”收尾,两者都体现出从容、反思性的口语英语。

Doctors, nurses and teachers are probably the most obvious examples, but honestly there are loads of jobs like that, social workers and firefighters included. I'd say the common thread is patience, because you're usually dealing with someone who's stressed or in trouble. My uncle runs a small restaurant in Hue, and even though it's not officially a caring profession, he still gives free meals to elderly regulars who are short on cash some weeks. To be fair, I think helping isn't really limited to a job title, it's more about how people choose to treat each other.

    • FChonestly there are loads of jobs like thatThe spoken filler "honestly" signals natural, conversational fluency rather than the flatter, plainer connectors a 6.5 answer relies on. A 6.5 answer would likely just say "there are many others too" without this kind of natural hedge.口语化的填充词“honestly”标志着自然的对话流畅度,而不是6.5分答案所依赖的那种更平淡、更朴素的连接词。6.5分答案很可能只会说“there are many others too”,没有这种自然的缓冲语。
    • LRshort on cash"Short on cash" is a natural, slightly informal collocation that sits a notch above the plainer "don't have much money" used in the 6.5 version, without being as unusual as the idiomatic phrasing a 7.5 answer reaches for.“Short on cash”是一个自然、略微非正式的搭配,比6.5分版本使用的更朴素的“don't have much money”高出一个层次,但又不像7.5分答案那样追求不寻常的地道表达。
    • GRAeven though it's not officially a caring profession, he still gives free meals to elderly regulars who are short on cash some weeksThis is a single sentence built around a concessive clause ("even though..."), a moderately complex structure a 6.5 answer would likely split into two separate plain sentences instead.这是一个围绕让步从句(“even though...”)构建的单句,这种中等复杂度的结构,6.5分答案很可能会拆成两个独立的朴素句子。
    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer opens with the idiomatic "spring to mind" and "scratch the surface", then compresses a whole biography into a fronted participial phrase, "Take my uncle, running a modest restaurant in Hue", the kind of flexible, economical grammar that marks the top band.这篇7.5分的答案以地道习语“spring to mind”和“scratch the surface”开头,然后把整个人物背景压缩进一个前置的分词短语——“Take my uncle, running a modest restaurant in Hue”——这正是最高分段所具备的那种灵活、简练的语法。

Doctors, nurses and teachers spring to mind first, but scratch the surface and there's a whole tier of jobs quietly doing the same work — social workers, firefighters, even customer service staff, all in the business of untangling other people's problems. What ties them together, I'd argue, is patience, since you're constantly dealing with someone stressed or out of their depth. Take my uncle, running a modest restaurant in Hue: not officially a caring profession, yet he ends up feeding elderly regulars who are short on cash some weeks, quietly and without any fuss. Helping, then, isn't confined to a job title at all — it's really a disposition, a way certain people simply choose to treat others.

    • FCHelping, then, isn't confined to a job title at allThe fronted discourse marker "then" signals a considered, almost essay-like closing move rather than the bare "So" a 6.5 answer would use, showing controlled, sophisticated management of the argument's final turn.前置的话语标记词“then”标志着一个经过深思熟虑、近乎论说文式的收尾动作,而不是6.5分答案会使用的赤裸裸的“So”,展现出对论证最后转折的克制、成熟的掌控。
    • LRin the business of untangling other people's problems"In the business of untangling" is a genuinely less-common, vivid collocation — well beyond the plain "solve people's problems" a 6.5 or 7.0 answer would default to, and it shows deliberate lexical choice rather than the first available word.“In the business of untangling”是一个真正不常见、生动的搭配——远超6.5或7.0分答案默认会使用的朴素说法“solve people's problems”,展现出经过深思熟虑的词汇选择,而不是随手拿来的第一个词。
    • GRATake my uncle, running a modest restaurant in Hue: not officially a caring profession, yet he ends up feeding elderly regulars who are short on cash some weeks, quietly and without any fuss. This sentence fronts an imperative-style "Take my uncle" and folds a whole clause into a participial phrase ("running a modest restaurant"), a compact construction a lower band would unpack into two or three separate coordinated sentences instead.这个句子把祈使句式的“Take my uncle”前置,并把整个分句折叠进一个分词短语(“running a modest restaurant”)之中,这是一种紧凑的结构,低分段会把它拆成两三个独立的并列句子。
  2. 2. Do you agree that people should always help their neighbours?

    查看这道题的6.5 / 7.0 / 7.5三档对比
    6.5 分

The 6.5 answer gives a direct opinion ("No, I don't agree") with one simple supporting reason and a brief plain example, linked mainly with "but" and "so".这篇6.5分的答案给出了一个直接的观点(“No, I don't agree”),配上一个简单的支持理由和一个简短朴素的例子,主要用“but”和“so”来连接。

No, I don't agree with that, it depends on the situation. Small things, like watering plants for a neighbour, are easy and I would do them. But if a neighbour keeps asking for money, that is different. A man in my building once asked to borrow three million dong for his motorbike, and I said no because I didn't know him well. So I think people should help in small ways, but there should be a limit.

    查看中文翻译

    不,我不同意这个说法,这要看情况而定。像帮邻居浇花这种小事,很简单,我会去做。但如果一个邻居总是找你借钱,那就不一样了。我楼里有个男人有一次问我能不能借三百万越南盾修摩托车,我拒绝了,因为我不太了解他。所以我认为人们应该在力所能及的小事上互相帮助,但应该有个限度。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCSo I think people should help in small ways, but there should be a limitThe plain connector "So" launching the final sentence is typical of a 6.5 closing move, stacking the opinion and its limit in one basic coordinated sentence rather than a more nuanced construction.用朴素的连接词“So”来引出最后一句,这是6.5分典型的收尾方式,把观点和它的限度堆叠进一个基础的并列句,而不是更细腻的结构。
    • LRI didn't know him wellThis is a modest, entirely ordinary phrase doing its job without any particular precision. A higher band would likely sharpen it to something like "barely knew him", which carries a slightly stronger, more specific sense.这是一个朴素、十分普通的短语,能完成任务,但没有任何特别的精确度。更高分段可能会把它锐化为类似“barely knew him”的表达,这带有稍微更强烈、更具体的意味。
    • GRAA man in my building once asked to borrow three million dong for his motorbike, and I said no because I didn't know him well. Two ideas are simply coordinated with "and" here rather than embedded into one flowing sentence, which is characteristic of 6.5-level grammar that keeps clauses separate and short.这里两个想法只是简单地用“and”并列在一起,而不是嵌套进一个流畅的句子,这是6.5分语法的特征,把分句保持得分离而简短。
    7.0 分

The 7.0 answer adds a small reflective aside on the word "always" itself and closes with the natural hedge "To be fair", showing the kind of self-aware commentary that separates it from a purely direct 6.5 opinion.这篇7.0分的答案加入了一句关于“always”这个词本身的小小反思性插入语,并以自然的缓冲语“To be fair”收尾,展现出那种把它与纯粹直接的6.5分观点区分开来的自我觉察式评论。

Not always, no, I think it really depends on the situation. Small things, like watering a neighbour's plants while they're away, are easy and I'd do them without much thought. But 'always' is a strong word, and if a neighbour keeps asking for money or favours, that's a different story. A guy in my building near the Han River once asked to borrow three million dong for a motorbike repair, and I said no since I barely knew him. To be fair, I think people should help in small, low-cost ways, though there has to be some kind of limit.

    • FCBut 'always' is a strong wordStopping to comment on the wording of the question itself is a mild reflective move, showing awareness of nuance that a 6.5 answer, which just states a flat "No, I don't agree", doesn't bother with.停下来评论问题本身的措辞,这是一种温和的反思性举动,展现出对细微差别的觉察,而6.5分答案只会平淡地陈述“No, I don't agree”,不会费心考虑这一点。
    • LRI barely knew him"Barely knew him" is a step up from the plain "didn't know him well" of the 6.5 answer, a modestly more natural collocation without being especially unusual.“Barely knew him”比6.5分答案朴素的“didn't know him well”更进一步,是一个略微更自然的搭配,但又没有特别不寻常。
    • GRABut 'always' is a strong word, and if a neighbour keeps asking for money or favours, that's a different story. This links a comment clause to a conditional clause within one sentence, a moderately complex structure that a 6.5 answer would likely split into two shorter, plainer sentences instead.这把一个评论性分句和一个条件分句连接在同一个句子中,这是一种复杂度适中的结构,6.5分答案很可能会拆成两个更短、更朴素的句子。
    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer opens with the idiomatic "is doing a lot of work" and uses a fronted conditional ("treat it as an unconditional rule and you risk...") in place of a plain "if" clause, both marks of confident, flexible top-band grammar.这篇7.5分的答案以地道的“is doing a lot of work”开头,并使用了一个前置的条件结构(“treat it as an unconditional rule and you risk...”)来代替朴素的“if”从句,两者都体现出最高分段那种自信、灵活的语法。

Not always, and 'always' is doing a lot of work in that question. The small stuff — watering a neighbour's plants, taking in a parcel — costs nothing and I'll do it without a second thought. It's the bigger asks that change the calculation: a man on the fourth floor of my building near the Han River once tried to borrow three million dong off me for a motorbike repair, and, barely knowing him, I turned him down.

    • FCIt's the bigger asks that change the calculationThis fronted, slightly abstract phrasing ("the bigger asks", "the calculation") manages the topic shift with more sophistication than a 6.5 or 7.0 answer's plain "But if a neighbour keeps asking...", signalling controlled, essay-like coherence.这种前置、略带抽象的措辞(“the bigger asks”、“the calculation”)比6.5或7.0分答案朴素的“But if a neighbour keeps asking...”更巧妙地处理了话题的转换,标志着一种克制的、论说文式的连贯性。
    • LR'always' is doing a lot of work in that question"Doing a lot of work" applied to a single word is a genuinely idiomatic, slightly unusual collocation, well beyond the plainer comment on "always" made at 7.0, and shows deliberate, creative lexical choice.“Doing a lot of work”被用来形容一个单独的词,这是一个真正地道、略微不寻常的搭配,远超7.0分对“always”所做的更朴素的评论,展现出经过深思熟虑、富有创意的词汇选择。
    • GRAtreat it as an unconditional rule and you risk being quietly taken advantage of by whoever leans on it hardestThis compresses a conditional meaning into an imperative-plus-consequence structure ("treat X and you risk Y") rather than a plain "if...then" clause, the kind of flexible, economical grammar a 6.5 answer wouldn't attempt.这里把一个条件性的含义压缩进了一个“祈使句+后果”的结构(“treat X and you risk Y”),而不是一个朴素的“if...then”从句,这正是6.5分答案不会去尝试的那种灵活、简练的语法。

The 6.5 answer states a direct reason ("kindness doesn't come naturally") and closes with a plain "So" summary, keeping sentences short and the vocabulary modest throughout.这篇6.5分的答案陈述了一个直接的理由(“kindness doesn't come naturally”),并以一句朴素的“So”总结句收尾,全篇句子简短,词汇朴素。

I think it's important because kindness doesn't come naturally to everyone, children learn it by watching. If parents ignore people who need help, their children will probably copy that. My parents in Hue used to bring extra bánh bèo to our old neighbour every Tết, and that small habit taught me more about kindness than any lecture. Children who learn this when they are young often grow up to help others too. So I think it's one of the most important things parents can teach.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCSo I think it's one of the most important things parents can teachThe closing "So" sentence delivers a flat restatement of the opinion, the simplest possible way to wrap up an answer and typical of the 6.5 band's plain coherence devices.结尾的“So”句子给出了一个平淡的观点重述,这是收尾答案最简单的方式,也是6.5分典型的朴素连贯手段。

    • GRAIf parents ignore people who need help, their children will probably copy that. This is a simple, textbook-style conditional ("If X, Y will probably...") stated in isolation, the kind of clear but basic grammar a 6.5 answer relies on rather than folding into a longer sentence.这是一个简单、教科书式的条件句(“If X, Y will probably...”),独立陈述,是6.5分答案依赖的那种清晰但基础的语法,而不是把它融入一个更长的句子。
    7.0 分

The 7.0 answer softens its claim with "To be fair" and "I'd say", and builds one moderately complex sentence around "without even realising it", showing natural spoken hedging rather than flat statement.这篇7.0分的答案用“To be fair”和“I'd say”软化了自己的论断,并围绕“without even realising it”构建了一个复杂度适中的句子,展现出自然的口语化缓冲,而不是平淡的陈述。

Because kindness honestly doesn't come naturally to everyone, it has to be modelled early on, I'd say. If a child grows up watching their parents ignore people who need help, they'll probably copy that pattern without even realising it. My own parents in Hue used to bring extra bánh bèo to our elderly neighbour every Tết, and that small habit taught me more about generosity than any lecture could. Kids who learn this young tend to grow into adults who actually check in on people, rather than just focusing on themselves. To be fair, it might be one of the most important things a family passes down.

    • LRthat small habit taught me more about generosity than any lecture could"Generosity" is a slightly more precise word choice than the plainer "kindness" repeated throughout the 6.5 version, showing a modest widening of vocabulary range.“Generosity”是一个比6.5分版本全篇反复使用的更朴素的“kindness”略微更精确的词汇选择,展现出词汇范围的适度拓宽。
    • GRAIf a child grows up watching their parents ignore people who need help, they'll probably copy that pattern without even realising it.This conditional sentence is extended with the trailing clause "without even realising it", adding a layer of complexity beyond the bare if-then structure a 6.5 answer would use.这个条件句用尾随分句“without even realising it”进行了延展,在6.5分答案会使用的赤裸的if-then结构之外,增添了一层复杂度。

The 7.5 answer opens with a dash-marked aside and fronts an imperative condition, "Grow up watching parents walk past people who need help, and you absorb that pattern", a compact construction well beyond the plain if-clauses of the lower bands.这篇7.5分的答案以一个破折号标注的插入语开头,并前置了一个祈使式条件句——“Grow up watching parents walk past people who need help, and you absorb that pattern”——这是一种紧凑的结构,远超低分段朴素的if从句。

Kindness doesn't exactly come naturally to everyone — it has to be modelled early, long before a child can explain why it matters. Grow up watching parents walk past people who need help, and you absorb that pattern without ever consciously choosing it. My own parents, back in Hue, used to bring extra bánh bèo round to our elderly neighbour every Tết without fail, and that quiet habit taught me more about generosity than any lecture ever managed. Children raised on habits like that tend to become adults who check in on a struggling colleague rather than simply looking out for themselves. Arguably, it's one of the more valuable things a family can hand down, academic skills included.

I think people usually ask for help after they have already tried to solve the problem themselves. At work, for example, I only ask a senior developer for help after I have spent about an hour trying to fix something in Figma by myself. People also ask for help during big events, like moving house or when something breaks suddenly, such as a laptop dying before a deadline. I think there is an unwritten rule that you should not ask too early, because it can look like you have not tried.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI think there is an unwritten rule that you should not ask too early, because it can look like you have not triedThe plain causal connector "because" links the claim to its reason in the most direct way available, typical of 6.5's straightforward, one-reason-at-a-time coherence rather than a more layered explanation.朴素的因果连接词“because”以现有最直接的方式把论断和它的理由连接起来,这是6.5分典型的直白、一次一个理由的连贯方式,而不是更有层次的解释。

    • GRAPeople also ask for help during big events, like moving house or when something breaks suddenly, such as a laptop dying before a deadline. This sentence strings three examples together with simple commas and "like"/"such as", a basic listing structure rather than the more integrated phrasing a higher band would use.这个句子用简单的逗号和“like”/“such as”把三个例子串联在一起,这是一种基础的罗列结构,而不是更高分段会使用的更融合的措辞。

The 7.0 answer opens with the spoken hedge "I'd say" and uses the natural collocation "hit a wall", a mild step beyond the plain, literal phrasing of the 6.5 version.这篇7.0分的答案以口语化缓冲语“I'd say”开头,并使用了自然的搭配“hit a wall”,这比6.5分版本朴素、字面化的措辞前进了温和的一步。

Usually when they've already tried to solve something themselves and hit a wall, I'd say. At work, for instance, I only ask a senior developer for help after I've spent maybe an hour struggling with a broken layout in Figma on my own. People also tend to ask for help during big life events, moving apartments, dealing with paperwork, or when something breaks unexpectedly, like a laptop dying right before a deadline. Honestly, there's almost an unspoken rule that you shouldn't ask too early, since it can look like you haven't made an effort yourself.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCHonestly, there's almost an unspoken rule that you shouldn't ask too earlyThe spoken discourse marker "Honestly" framing a mild concession shows natural conversational fluency, something the 6.5 answer's flatter "I think there is an unwritten rule" doesn't include.用口语化的话语标记词“Honestly”来引出一个温和的让步,展现出自然的对话流畅度,这是6.5分答案更平淡的“I think there is an unwritten rule”所不具备的。
    • LRhit a wall"Hit a wall" is a natural spoken collocation for getting stuck, a step up from the very literal "tried to solve the problem" used throughout the 6.5 answer.“Hit a wall”是一个自然的口语化搭配,用来形容陷入困境,比6.5分答案全篇使用的十分字面化的“tried to solve the problem”更进一步。
    • GRAUsually when they've already tried to solve something themselves and hit a wall, I'd say.Opening the answer with a subordinate "when" clause before the main comment ("I'd say") is a slightly more flexible structure than the 6.5 answer's plain subject-first sentence.以一个从属的“when”从句作为答案的开头,然后再给出主要评论(“I'd say”),这是一种比6.5分答案朴素的主语开头句略微更灵活的结构。

Usually once people have already hit a wall on their own, having quietly exhausted whatever they could try first. At work, that means I won't go near a senior developer about a broken Figma layout until I've wrestled with it myself for a good hour. People lean on others most during the big disruptive moments too — moving apartments, wading through paperwork, a laptop dying the night before a deadline. There's an almost unspoken rule at play: ask too early and it reads as not having made a genuine effort, so most of us hold out until we're properly stuck before reaching for someone else.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCThere's an almost unspoken rule at play: ask too early and it reads as not having made a genuine effortThe colon introducing a compressed explanatory clause manages the answer's internal logic more elegantly than the plainer "because" clauses of the lower bands, a hallmark of confident top-band discourse control.用冒号引出一个压缩式的解释性分句,比低分段更朴素的“because”从句更优雅地管理了答案的内部逻辑,这是最高分段自信话语掌控力的标志。

Some people also worry about being a burden, especially if the person they'd ask is already busy. In certain workplaces, asking for help even gets quietly judged as a weakness, which just pushes people to hide their struggles more. Pride, mostly, laced with a fear of looking incompetent. I'm not immune to it either: when a client flagged a design file I'd botched last year, my first instinct was to quietly patch it up rather than admit to my manager that I needed guidance. There's also the worry of being a burden, especially when the person you'd ask is visibly drowning in their own work already. In some workplaces asking gets quietly read as weakness, which only pushes people further into hiding their struggles. A shame, really, because in my experience it's the colleagues who ask early who finish tasks fastest, not the ones who stay silent and stuck.

    • FCto be honestThis natural spoken hedge opening the answer signals comfortable, conversational fluency, something the plainer, unhedged 6.5 opening doesn't attempt.这个开启答案的自然口语化缓冲语,标志着从容的对话流畅度,这是更朴素、不加缓冲的6.5分开头不会去尝试的。
    • LRwhich saved me the callout fee"The callout fee" is a more specific, slightly technical collocation than the vague "saved me money" used as a separate sentence at 6.5, showing more precise vocabulary.“The callout fee”是一个比6.5分作为独立句子使用的模糊说法“saved me money”更具体、略带技术性的搭配,展现出更精确的词汇。
    • GRASo self-reliance probably shouldn't be treated as a fixed rule.Adding the hedging adverb "probably" and the passive "be treated as" makes this closing sentence a little more layered than the 6.5 answer's flat "I don't think self-reliance should always be the rule".加入缓冲性副词“probably”和被动语态“be treated as”,让这个结尾句子比6.5分答案平淡的“I don't think self-reliance should always be the rule”更有层次一点。
    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer fronts a compact time phrase, "a couple of repair videos later", instead of a full clause, and closes with the sophisticated contrast "isn't a fixed rule so much as a judgment call", both signs of confident, flexible top-band grammar.这篇7.5分的答案前置了一个紧凑的时间短语——“a couple of repair videos later”——而不是一个完整的分句,并以精妙的对比结尾——“isn't a fixed rule so much as a judgment call”——两者都是最高分段自信、灵活语法的标志。

It really depends on the problem at hand. With small, everyday snags, yes — having a go yourself first tends to build confidence, and you usually pick up something useful in the process. When my washing machine sprang a leak last year, a couple of repair videos later I'd worked out it was just a loose hose I could tighten myself, sparing me the callout fee entirely. Anything more serious, though — a legal tangle, a medical issue — and stubbornly refusing help can waste precious time and make things worse. So self-reliance, to my mind, isn't a fixed rule so much as a judgment call on what's genuinely within your own ability to handle.

    • FCSo self-reliance, to my mind, isn't a fixed rule so much as a judgment call on what's genuinely within your own ability to handleThe "not X so much as Y" construction manages a nuanced final distinction far more elegantly than the flatter "shouldn't always be the rule" phrasing at the lower bands, a hallmark of sophisticated closing coherence.“not X so much as Y”结构比低分段更平淡的“shouldn't always be the rule”措辞更优雅地处理了一个细腻的最终区分,这是精妙的结尾连贯性的标志。
    • LRsparing me the callout fee entirely"Sparing me" is a more elegant, slightly less common verb choice than the plainer "saved me" used at the lower bands, doing the same job with more precision.“Sparing me”是一个比低分段使用的更朴素的“saved me”更优雅、略微不常见的动词选择,用更高的精确度完成了同样的任务。
    • GRAa couple of repair videos later I'd worked out it was just a loose hose I could tighten myselfFronting the compact time phrase "a couple of repair videos later" instead of a full "after I watched a couple of repair videos" clause is a more economical, flexible construction than either lower band attempts.前置紧凑的时间短语“a couple of repair videos later”,而不是一个完整的“after I watched a couple of repair videos”从句,这是一种比两个较低分段所尝试的都更简练、更灵活的结构。

The 6.5 answer gives a balanced "not always more valuable" opinion with one plain workplace example and closes with the simple summary "So I think society needs both".这篇6.5分的答案给出了一个平衡的“not always more valuable”观点,配上一个朴素的职场例子,并以简单的总结“So I think society needs both”收尾。

I don't think one is always more valuable than the other, they just help in different ways. Money can solve urgent problems quickly, like paying for medicine or rent. But time can build relationships that money cannot. For example, a colleague of mine spent a whole Saturday helping her elderly relative learn how to use an online banking app, and that meant a lot to her. Not everyone has spare time though, especially people who work long hours. So I think society needs both.

    我不认为其中一个总是比另一个更有价值,它们只是以不同的方式发挥作用。金钱能迅速解决紧急问题,比如支付医药费或房租。但时间能建立起金钱无法建立的关系。比如说,我的一位同事花了整整一个星期六,帮她年迈的亲戚学习如何使用网上银行应用,这对她意义重大。不过并不是每个人都有空闲时间,尤其是那些工作时间很长的人。所以我认为社会两者都需要。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCSo I think society needs bothThis short, flat closing sentence uses the plainest possible connector "So" to wrap up the balanced opinion, typical of the direct, unembellished coherence expected at 6.5.这个简短、平淡的结尾句子使用了现有最朴素的连接词“So”来收束这个平衡的观点,这是6.5分所期望的直接、不加修饰的连贯性的典型特征。
    • LRthat meant a lot to her"Meant a lot to her" is a vague, general phrase; a higher band would specify what exactly it meant, such as feeling "less alone", which the 7.0/7.5 versions include.“Meant a lot to her”是一个模糊、笼统的短语;更高分段会具体说明这到底意味着什么,比如感觉“less alone”,这正是7.0/7.5版本所包含的内容。
    • GRANot everyone has spare time though, especially people who work long hours. This short, separate sentence added with "though" at the end is a simple way of qualifying the point, rather than integrating the qualification into a longer, more complex sentence.这个用“though”结尾添加上去的简短、独立句子,是一种简单的限定方式,而不是把限定融入一个更长、更复杂的句子。
    7.0 分

The 7.0 answer includes a mild comparative reflection, "that mattered more to her than a transfer would have", a moderately complex structure beyond the simpler claims of the 6.5 answer.这篇7.0分的答案加入了一句温和的比较性反思——“that mattered more to her than a transfer would have”——这是一种复杂度适中的结构,超越了6.5分答案更简单的论断。

I don't think one is automatically more valuable, honestly, they just help in different ways. Money can solve urgent problems quickly, like buying medicine or covering rent for a family in a tough spot. But time builds relationships in a way money can't — when a colleague of mine spent a whole Saturday helping an elderly relative set up an online banking app, that mattered more to her than a transfer would have. To be fair, not everyone has spare time, especially people working long hours, so money is sometimes the only practical option. I'd say society probably needs both in balance.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FChonestly, they just help in different waysThe spoken filler "honestly" placed mid-sentence signals natural, conversational ease, something the 6.5 answer's plainer, unhedged phrasing doesn't include.放在句子中间的口语化填充词“honestly”标志着自然、从容的对话感,这是6.5分答案更朴素、不加缓冲的措辞所不具备的。
    • LRa family in a tough spot"A tough spot" is a natural, slightly informal collocation, a step above the very plain "urgent problems" repeated without variation in the 6.5 answer.“A tough spot”是一个自然、略微非正式的搭配,比6.5分答案中反复出现、没有变化的十分朴素的“urgent problems”高出一个层次。
    • GRAthat mattered more to her than a transfer would haveThis comparative clause ("more... than a transfer would have") is a moderately complex structure using an implied conditional, beyond the simpler flat statements the 6.5 answer relies on.这个比较分句(“more... than a transfer would have”)使用了隐含的条件句,是一种复杂度适中的结构,超越了6.5分答案所依赖的更简单的平淡陈述。
    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer opens with the vivid metaphor "a bill that can't wait" and closes with the idiomatic "I'd wager", both marks of the precise, slightly idiomatic phrasing expected at the top band.这篇7.5分的答案以生动的隐喻“a bill that can't wait”开头,并以地道的“I'd wager”收尾,两者都是最高分段所期望的那种精确、略带地道色彩的措辞标志。

Neither is automatically the more valuable one — they just do different jobs. Money solves the urgent problems fast: medicine, rent, a bill that can't wait. Time, though, builds something money simply can't buy — when a colleague of mine gave up an entire Saturday to walk an elderly relative through setting up online banking, what stuck with her afterwards wasn't the help itself so much as feeling less alone. That said, spare time is a luxury not everyone has, particularly people clocking long hours, so money remains the only realistic option for plenty of people. Society, I'd wager, needs a fairly careful balance of both.

I largely agree with this. When people take small actions locally, like keeping shared spaces clean or checking on older neighbours, it builds trust that is hard to create in other ways. In my apartment block, a resident started a group chat on Zalo just for reporting things like broken lifts or lost keys, and after a few months the whole building felt more connected. If one country cuts emissions and others do not, it will not make much difference, so agreements between governments are needed. For the biggest issues, cooperation isn't optional — climate change and pandemics simply don't respect borders, so one country cutting emissions while others carry on regardless achieves next to nothing. Agreements between governments are the necessary starting point, then. What they aren't, though, is sufficient on their own; plenty of international agreements get signed with great fanfare and then quietly shelved once the cameras leave. Real progress, I'd argue, needs cooperation at the top matched by pressure from ordinary people and local businesses holding their own governments to the commitments they've made. So it's less that cooperation solves everything, and more that nothing gets solved without it.
