The plain phrase 'I felt quite shocked' and a simple comparative sentence describe the situation clearly but without linguistic ambition, Band 6.5 level.朴素的短语 'I felt quite shocked'(我感到相当震惊)以及一个简单的比较句,清楚地描述了当时的情况,但语言上没有太大野心,处于6.5分水平。

The thing I want to talk about is a haircut and hair dye I got at a new salon inside Vincom mall, about three months ago. My hair was getting long, and I also wanted to try a lighter colour for a change. I was paying for a haircut, a wash, and colouring my hair light brown, and the stylist, whose name was Trang, spent almost three hours on it using several different products.

When I saw the price on the bill, I felt quite shocked. It was almost two million đồng, about four times more than I usually pay at my normal salon near my apartment. My face must have shown something, because Trang quickly explained that the colouring products were imported and more expensive than usual.

What I did about it was just pay, because I had already agreed to the service and hadn't checked the price list carefully before starting. I didn't argue, but I felt annoyed with myself walking home.

Why it was unexpected is simple: the salon is in a big shopping mall, so I assumed the price would be similar to other salons, and I didn't ask about the colour treatment price first, which was my mistake. Now I always ask the full price before any new service.

  • LRI felt quite shocked"Quite shocked" is a plain, very common way to express surprise, built from a basic intensifier and a familiar adjective rather than a more vivid alternative like "I was taken aback" or "my jaw dropped." This directness without embellishment is exactly the 6.5 lexical target — "use everyday, high-frequency words... do NOT reach for idioms or clever phrasing." The phrase is also placed early and briefly, functioning as a simple emotional marker before the story moves on to explain why, rather than being developed into a longer descriptive passage."Quite shocked" 是一种平实、非常常见的表达惊讶的方式,由一个基础的程度副词和一个熟悉的形容词构成,而不是像 "I was taken aback" 或 "my jaw dropped" 这样更生动的说法。这种不加修饰的直白正是6.5分词汇目标所要求的——"使用日常、高频词汇……不要刻意使用习语或巧妙的措辞。"这个短语也被放在句子靠前、篇幅简短的位置,起到一个简单情感标记的作用,随后故事便转向解释原因,而不是被展开成一段更长的描述性段落。
  • GRAthe colouring products were imported and more expensive than usual. This uses a basic comparative structure ("more expensive than usual") joined to the first clause with a simple "and," correctly but without any further grammatical ambition — no relative clause, no conditional, no fronted phrase. That accurate-but-plain construction is precisely what the 6.5 tier expects: "mostly simple sentences plus a few basic complex ones," with the comparative here counting as one of those basic complex elements rather than anything more elaborate. A 7.0 answer at the same point would likely link this explanation into a longer sentence with a result clause showing why it mattered.
  • FCNow I always ask the full price before any new service. This closing sentence states the lesson learned directly and briefly, giving the story a plain resolution without extending it with reflection on how the experience changed the speaker's broader attitude toward spending or salons. That direct, unelaborated closing move is sufficient for the 6.5 tier's Fluency and Coherence target — "answer directly, stay on topic" — but it stops short of the evaluative or generalising close a 7.0 or 7.5 answer would add. The present-simple "always" does at least signal an ongoing habit change, giving the ending a small sense of consequence.

The natural collocation 'after the fact' and the multi-clause sentence weighing the mechanic's explanation against the price show accurate, comfortable Band 7.0 development.地道搭配 'after the fact'(事后)以及那个在师傅的解释和价格之间权衡的多从句句子,都展现出7.0分准确而运用自如的展开方式。

The thing I want to talk about is a motorbike repair I had done a few months ago. My bike had been making a strange noise for a while, so I took it to a mechanic near my apartment, thinking it would just be a simple, cheap fix.

When I first dropped it off, the mechanic quoted me a rough estimate of around four hundred thousand đồng, which sounded reasonable, so I left the bike with him and went to work. But when I came back to collect it that evening, he told me the actual problem was with a part inside the engine, not just something minor, and the total bill came to almost two million đồng.

Honestly, I felt pretty annoyed and a bit caught off guard when I saw the final price, especially since it was so much higher than what he'd originally told me. I did ask him to explain the difference, and he showed me the part that had been replaced, which did look genuinely worn out, so I didn't think he was lying to me, just that he'd underestimated the problem at the start.

What I did in the end was just pay it, since the bike was already fixed and I needed it for getting to work. There wasn't really much point arguing after the fact.

Why it was so unexpected, I think, comes down to the fact that I didn't ask him to confirm the price again once he found the real problem, and I probably should have. Now I always ask a mechanic to call me before doing any extra work, just so there are no surprises like that again.

  • GRAhe told me the actual problem was with a part inside the engine, not just something minor, and the total bill came to almost two million đồngThis sentence layers a contrastive phrase, "not just something minor," inside a reported-speech clause, then coordinates it with a second consequence clause about the bill, two separate grammatical moves combined smoothly in one extended sentence. It's the comfortable, accurate complex grammar the 7.0 descriptor describes, stopping short of anything like a cleft sentence or nested conditional that would mark 7.5. The specific number, "almost two million đồng" against the earlier "four hundred thousand," also does real argumentative work, making the scale of the surprise concrete.
  • LRThere wasn't really much point arguing after the fact."After the fact" is a natural, slightly idiomatic-leaning collocation meaning "once something has already happened," used here instead of a more literal phrase like "after it was already done." It's the flexible, topic-specific-adjacent phrase the 7.0 lexical descriptor targets, sitting comfortably among otherwise plain vocabulary rather than standing out as showy. It also economically closes the argument about why the speaker didn't push back on the mechanic's price."After the fact"是一个自然、略带习语倾向的搭配,意为"事情已经发生之后",这里用它而不是像"after it was already done"这样更字面的表达。这正是7.0分词汇描述语所瞄准的那种灵活、近乎话题相关的短语,自然地融入其余平实的词汇当中,而不显得突兀炫耀。它也简洁地收束了关于说话者为何没有对修车师傅的报价提出异议这一论证。
  • FCI did ask him to explain the difference, and he showed me the part that had been replaced, which did look genuinely worn out, so I didn't think he was lying to meRather than simply stating the outcome, that the speaker paid, this develops the reasoning with a concrete example, actually seeing the worn part, that leads to a specific conclusion about the mechanic's honesty. That's the kind of reason-plus-example development the 7.0 fluency descriptor calls for, going beyond the bare fact that the bill was higher than expected. A 6.5 answer would likely skip the verification step and just state that the price was paid.这段话没有只是陈述结果——说话者付了钱——而是用一个具体例子来展开推理过程:亲眼看到那个磨损的零件,从而得出一个关于修车师傅是否诚实的具体结论。这正是7.0分流利度描述语所要求的那种"理由加例子"的展开方式,超越了账单比预期高这一单纯事实。6.5分的答案很可能会略去这一验证步骤,只是陈述价钱已经付清。

The ironic image of walking out 'feeling like a man who'd been taught a lesson in the most pleasant possible way' and the repeated-'message' construction show the idiomatic, controlled sophistication of Band 7.5.那个带点反讽意味的画面——走出来时'感觉像个刚被以最令人愉快的方式上了一课的人'——以及重复使用'message'(信息/教训)一词的句式结构,都展现出7.5分那种地道而收放自如的老练笔法。

The time I'd describe was a dinner in Hội An last spring, when a colleague from our German client's team was visiting Vietnam for the first time, and I'd offered to take her, along with two people from my studio, to a restaurant on the river.

What I was paying for was the meal — a table by the water, lanterns, grilled fish, a whole crab, some local dishes I wanted her to try, and a couple of bottles of wine, which was the mistake. The restaurant was one I'd walked past many times but never eaten in. The menu had beautiful photographs and no prices, and I remember noticing that and deciding it would be rude to ask in front of a guest.

How I felt when the bill came was a small, cold shock. It was three million six hundred thousand đồng, roughly three times what I'd budgeted. I'm sure my face did something, because Linh, sitting beside me, quietly asked if I was all right.

What I did about it was nothing, in the moment. I could have questioned the bill, and part of me wanted to, but our guest was there, delighted with the evening, and arguing over money in front of her would have spoiled it and embarrassed everyone at the table. So I paid, smiled, and walked out along the river feeling like a man who'd been taught a lesson in the most pleasant possible way.

Why it was unexpected comes down to two things. First, I'd assumed a restaurant I'd walked past as a local was priced for locals, when it was clearly priced for tourists, and I'd stopped noticing the difference. Second, a menu with no prices is a message, and I'd read the message and ignored it. I now ask, always, before ordering wine anywhere, and I've found a much better restaurant one street back where the crab is half the price.

  • LRwalked out along the river feeling like a man who'd been taught a lesson in the most pleasant possible wayThis closing image is genuinely ironic and figurative — comparing an expensive, awkward moment to a "lesson" delivered "pleasantly" — which is precisely the kind of idiomatic, reflective touch the 7.5 lexical descriptor rewards over plain description. A 7.0 answer would more likely state directly that the experience taught him to check prices in future, without this wry self-portrait. The phrase also caps off the whole extended anecdote about the unpriced menu, turning an uncomfortable bill into a polished, faintly self-mocking observation.
  • GRAa menu with no prices is a message, and I'd read the message and ignored itThe deliberate repetition of 'message' across a coordinated clause is a stylistic, less-common structure handled with control, reflecting Band 7.5 grammar.在并列从句中刻意重复使用 'message' 一词,是一种风格化、不常见但控制得当的结构,体现了7.5分的语法水平。
  • FCI could have questioned the bill, and part of me wanted to, but our guest was there, delighted with the evening, and arguing over money in front of her would have spoiled itThe speaker weighs a hypothetical alternative, questioning the bill, against the real social cost of doing so, rather than simply stating what happened, which is exactly the reflective, evaluative depth the 7.5 fluency descriptor asks for beyond description. A 7.0 answer would more likely just say "I decided not to say anything because our guest was there," skipping the internal conflict. This moment also explains the emotional logic of the whole story, why an expensive mistake was absorbed silently rather than challenged.说话者权衡了一个假设性的选择——质疑账单——与这样做所要付出的真实社交代价之间的取舍,而不是单纯陈述发生了什么,这正是Band 7.5流利度描述所要求的、超越单纯描述的反思与评价深度。Band 7.0的答案更可能只是说"I decided not to say anything because our guest was there",跳过了内心的挣扎。这一刻也解释了整个故事的情感逻辑——为什么一个代价高昂的失误被默默承受,而没有被当面指出。

Opens with a plain "I think young people mostly spend money on", listing categories with simple "then" connectors.以平淡的 'I think young people mostly spend money on' 开头,用简单的 'then' 连接词列出各个类别。

I think young people mostly spend money on food and drink out, like bubble tea or dinner with friends. At our studio, I see this every month on salary day, the juniors' money goes on things like that first, then clothes and shoes, then experiences like concerts and trips, and then technology, usually a new phone they didn't really need. Gym memberships get bought with excitement but used maybe twice. Compared with my parents' generation, what's different is how much goes on experiences instead of objects, and how much is spent just to be seen by other people online.

    • FCI think young people mostly spend money on food and drink out, like bubble tea or dinner with friends.A full sentence frames the claim with "I think" before the list begins. The 7.5 band drops the framing entirely, opening directly on the concrete scene "I see it every month on salary day at the studio", a more vivid, confident opening.一个完整的句子用 'I think' 框定这个论断,然后才开始列举。7.5分完全去掉了这个框架,直接从具体的场景开始,'I see it every month on salary day at the studio',是一个更生动、更自信的开头。
    • LRthen technology, usually a new phone they didn't really needClear, functional phrasing. The 7.0 and 7.5 bands both tighten this to "a phone upgrade they didn't strictly need", a more precise noun ("upgrade") and a slightly more formal adverb ("strictly").清楚、功能性的措辞。7.0和7.5的分数段都把它收紧为'a phone upgrade they didn't strictly need',用一个更精准的名词('upgrade')和一个略微更正式的副词('strictly')。
    • GRAGym memberships get bought with excitement but used maybe twice.A single contrastive sentence with "but", correct and clear. The 7.5 band drops the conjunction and states the same contrast in two shorter clauses joined without "but" at all — "bought with enthusiasm and used twice" — a more compact structure.一个用 'but' 连接的对比句,正确且清楚。7.5的分数段去掉了连接词,用两个不加 'but' 的更短分句来表达同样的对比——'bought with enthusiasm and used twice'——结构更紧凑。

Adds the hedge "honestly" and extends the list with a fourth category, "Games and subscriptions", not present at 6.5.加上了委婉语 'honestly',并把列表延伸出第四个类别,'Games and subscriptions',这是6.5没有的。

I see it every month on salary day at the studio, honestly. The juniors' money goes, in roughly this order, on food and drink out, bubble tea, dinners, cafés with good lighting, then clothes and sneakers, then experiences like concerts, festivals and trips, then technology, usually a phone upgrade they didn't strictly need. Gym memberships get bought with real enthusiasm and used maybe twice. Games and subscriptions take a steady slice too. What's noticeable compared with my parents' generation is how much goes on experiences rather than objects, and how much is spent to be seen, a lot of youth spending is really spending on a version of yourself for other people to look at.

    • FCI see it every month on salary day at the studio, honestly. The hedge "honestly" is tacked onto the end of the opening sentence, giving it a slightly more spoken feel. The 7.5 band drops the hedge entirely, letting the concrete scene open the answer with no qualifier at all.委婉语 'honestly' 被添加在开场句的末尾,让它带上一丝更口语化的感觉。7.5的分数段完全去掉了这个委婉语,让具体的场景在没有任何限定语的情况下直接开启这个回答。
    • LRGames and subscriptions take a steady slice too."Steady slice" is a nice, natural collocation for describing a recurring but moderate expense. The 7.5 band keeps this identical phrase, showing this piece of lexis already performs well by 7.0.'Steady slice' 是一个不错的、自然的搭配,用来形容一种持续但适度的开支。7.5的分数段保留了完全相同的短语,说明这个词汇选择在7.0时就已经表现得很好了。
    • GRAa lot of youth spending is really spending on a version of yourself for other people to look atA comma splice attaches this closing reflection directly onto the previous clause with no linking word, functional but a little loose for 7.0. The 7.5 band fixes the equivalent sentence with a colon instead, "how much is spent to be seen: a great deal of youth spending is...", a cleaner link between claim and reflection.一个逗号拼接句把这个结尾的反思直接接在前一个分句后面,没有任何连接词,可行但对7.0来说略显松散。7.5的分数段用冒号修正了对应句子的问题,'how much is spent to be seen: a great deal of youth spending is...',在论断和反思之间的连接更干净。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI see it every month on salary day at the studio.A short, concrete opening sentence with no hedge and no framing verb like "I think", more direct than the hedged version at 7.0 or the framed claim at 6.5. This kind of scene-setting opener signals confidence from the first line.一个简短、具体的开场句,没有委婉语,也没有像 'I think' 这样的框定动词,比7.0带委婉语的版本或6.5带框定动词的版本都更直接。这种场景铺陈式的开头从第一句话就传达出自信。
    • GRAhow much is spent to be seen: a great deal of youth spending is really spending on a version of oneself for other people to look atA colon replaces the comma splice used for the equivalent closing reflection at 7.0, a small but genuine grammatical refinement. "Oneself" also replaces "yourself", a more formal register appropriate to the reflective register of the closing line.冒号代替了7.0中对应结尾反思所用的逗号拼接句,是一处虽小却真实的语法打磨。'Oneself' 也代替了 'yourself',语域更正式,适合结尾句反思性的语气。

Opens with "I think it's usually because", spelling out the claim before the anecdote arrives.以 'I think it's usually because' 开头,在轶事出现之前先把论断讲清楚。

I think it's usually because they're buying something other than just the object itself. Once I bought some wine to impress a guest, and it wasn't really about the drink, it was about looking like a generous host. People spend on things they don't need to feel a certain way, to show status, or just because buying itself feels good. Advertising is also good at making people think they need something they don't. It's also easier to spend without much thought when a purchase only takes one tap on your phone. I don't think it's usually about being silly, it's more about emotion with a price attached.

    • FCI think it's usually because they're buying something other than just the object itself.A full sentence frames the claim with "I think" before the anecdote. People spend on things they don't need to feel a certain way, to signal status, to relieve boredom or sadness, or simply because the buying itself is a pleasure that ends at the door of the shop. Advertising is expert at turning wants into needs, too. Ease matters as well, a purchase that takes one tap gets a lot less thought than one that required a trip to an actual shop. I'd say very little of it is stupidity, most of it is really just emotion with a price.

    • GRAThat wine I ordered once wasn't really a drink, it was an image of myself as a generous host, and I paid for the image, not the bottle.A long sentence links three clauses with commas and "and", ambitious but a little loose for 7.0. The 7.5 band achieves the same content with a semicolon after "drink" instead of a comma, a cleaner, more controlled version of the same sentence.一个用逗号和 'and' 连接三个分句的长句,对7.0来说算是有野心,但略显松散。7.5的分数段用 'drink' 后面的分号代替逗号,达到同样的内容,是一个更干净、更有掌控力的版本。
    • LRthe buying itself is a pleasure that ends at the door of the shopA vivid, slightly figurative phrase for the fleeting nature of the pleasure of buying. The 7.5 band uses the identical phrase, showing this wording already performs at the ceiling of the range by 7.0.一个生动、略带比喻性的短语,用来形容购物快感的转瞬即逝。7.5的分数段用了完全相同的短语,说明这个措辞在7.0时就已经表现出这个范围内的最高水平了。
    • FCI'd say very little of it is stupidity, most of it is really just emotion with a price. The hedge "I'd say" softens what follows into a personal judgement rather than a flat claim, a natural spoken marker for offering an opinion. A 6.5 answer would more likely state the same claim directly without this hedge; a 7.5 answer might vary the hedge or drop it for a more confident construction. Here it signals the speaker's own stance clearly while keeping the tone conversational, typical of Band 7.0.委婉语 'I'd say' 把接下来的内容软化成一种个人判断,而不是平铺直叙的论断,是提出观点时一种自然的口语标记,让语气保持对话感。6.5的回答更可能直接陈述同样的论断,不用这个委婉语;7.5的回答可能会改变这个委婉语,或者去掉它,换成更自信的结构。这里它清楚地表明了说话人自己的立场,同时保持了对话式的语气,是7.0典型的特征。

    • FCUsually because they're buying something other than the thing itself.A subordinate clause alone opens the whole answer, more compact than the full framing sentence at 6.5 or the hedged version at 7.0. This kind of confident fragment is a recognisable higher-band opening move.单独一个从属分句就开启了整个回答,比6.5的完整框定句或7.0带委婉语的版本都更紧凑。这种自信的片段式开头是高分回答中一个可辨识的标志性手法。
    • GRAThat wine in Hội An wasn't a drink; it was an image of myself as a generous host, and I paid for the image.A semicolon replaces the comma splice used for the equivalent sentence at 6.5 and 7.0, a small but genuine grammatical refinement. Naming the specific place, "Hội An", also grounds the anecdote more concretely than either lower band.分号代替了6.5和7.0对应句子中使用的逗号拼接句,是一处虽小却真实的语法打磨。指出具体地点'Hội An',也比两个较低分数段都更具体地为这个轶事提供了根基。
    • LRVery little of it, I'd say, is stupidity; most of it is emotion with a price. The hedge "I'd say" is inserted mid-sentence rather than at the start, a more integrated placement than the sentence-initial hedges used at 6.5 and 7.0. The semicolon also replaces the comma splice found in both lower bands for this exact closing contrast.委婉语 'I'd say' 被放在句子中间,而不是句首,是一种比6.5和7.0使用的句首委婉语更融入整体的位置安排。分号也代替了这两个较低分数段在这个确切结尾对比中都出现的逗号拼接句。

Opens with "I think it's very important", spelling the claim out fully before the anecdote begins.以 'I think it's very important' 开头,在轶事出现之前就把论断说得很完整。

I think it's very important, and I learned this a bit late myself. When my father needed eye treatment two years ago, my parents paid for it from their savings without borrowing any money, and watching that made me start saving properly at thirty. Savings turn a crisis into just an expense, illness, job loss, or a broken machine become problems instead of disasters. They also give freedom, like being able to leave a bad job or take a risk. And for old age, especially where pensions are thin, they make the difference between staying independent and depending on your children. Of course, saving everything and never spending isn't good either.

    • FCI think it's very important, and I learned this a bit late myself.A full sentence frames the claim with "I think" before the anecdote. The 7.5 band drops the framing entirely, opening on the bare two-word answer "Very, and I learned it late", a far more compact and confident structure.一个完整的句子用 'I think' 框定了这个论断,然后才引出轶事。7.5的分数段完全去掉了这个框架,直接从光秃的两个词开始,'Very, and I learned it late',结构远远更紧凑、更自信。
    • GRASavings turn a crisis into just an expense, illness, job loss, or a broken machine become problems instead of disasters.A comma splice attaches the list of examples to the main claim without a colon, functional but loose. The 7.5 band fixes the equivalent sentence with a colon, "turn a crisis into an expense: illness, job loss, a broken machine become problems", a cleaner link between claim and list.一个逗号拼接句把例子列表接在主要论断后面,没有用冒号,可行但松散。7.5的分数段用冒号修正了对应句子,'turn a crisis into an expense: illness, job loss, a broken machine become problems',让论断和列表之间的连接更干净。
    • LROf course, saving everything and never spending isn't good either.Plain, functional closing phrasing. The 7.5 band replaces this with the more precise metaphor "a life of pure saving is a life postponed", a more vivid, evaluative way of making the same closing point.平实、功能性的结尾措辞。7.5的分数段用更精准的比喻 'a life of pure saving is a life postponed' 代替了它,用一种更生动、更具评价性的方式表达了同样的结尾点。

Adds the hedge "I'd say" and "honestly", and extends the closing thought with "though" as a trailing qualifier.加上了委婉语 'I'd say' 和 'honestly',并用 'though' 作为一个尾随的限定语延伸了结尾的想法。

Very important, I'd say, and honestly I learned it a bit late. When my father needed eye treatment two years ago, my parents paid for it from savings without borrowing a single đồng, and watching that was what finally made me start saving properly at thirty. Savings turn a crisis into an expense, illness, job loss, a broken machine become problems rather than disasters. They also buy freedom, the ability to leave a bad job or take a risk when it matters. And for old age, in a country where pensions are pretty thin, they're really the difference between dignity and depending on your children. The balance matters too, though, a life of pure saving is a life postponed.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCVery important, I'd say, and honestly I learned it a bit late. The double hedge "I'd say... honestly" softens the claim, more natural than the flat 6.5 opener. The 7.5 band removes both hedges, arriving at the bare two-word opening "Very, and I learned it late", a more assertive register.双重委婉语 'I'd say... honestly' 软化了这个论断,比6.5那种平直的开头更自然。7.5的分数段去掉了这两个委婉语,直接以光秃的两词开头 'Very, and I learned it late',语域更果断。
    • GRASavings turn a crisis into an expense, illness, job loss, a broken machine become problems rather than disasters.A comma splice attaches the list of examples without a colon, the same looseness found at 6.5. The 7.5 band fixes this exact issue with a colon, showing the grammatical refinement happens specifically between 7.0 and 7.5 for this sentence.一个逗号拼接句把例子列表接在后面,没有用冒号,和6.5的松散程度一样。7.5的分数段正好修正了这个问题,说明这处语法打磨恰好发生在7.0到7.5之间。
    • LRThe balance matters too, though, a life of pure saving is a life postponed."A life of pure saving is a life postponed" already appears here at 7.0, a precise metaphor. The 7.5 band keeps this identical phrase but fixes the comma splice before it with a semicolon, and adds a further closing sentence this version doesn't include.'A life of pure saving is a life postponed' 在7.0就已经出现了,是一个精准的比喻。7.5的分数段保留了完全相同的短语,但在它前面用分号修正了逗号拼接的问题,并在后面又加了一句结尾句,这是7.0没有的。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCVery, and I learned it late.A four-word opening answers the question and adds a personal aside in the same breath, far more compact than the full sentences at 6.5 and 7.0. This kind of confident brevity is characteristic of the top band.一个四词的开头,在同一口气里既回答了问题,又加上了一句个人化的补充,比6.5和7.0的完整句子都紧凑得多。这种自信的简洁是最高分数段的典型特征。
    • LRBut a few months of expenses in reserve changes how a person walks through the world.A genuinely reflective closing image, "changes how a person walks through the world", that neither lower band attempts; both stop at the more literal claim about balance or not saving everything. This kind of evaluative closing touch distinguishes the top band.一个真正带有反思性的结尾画面,'changes how a person walks through the world',是两个较低分数段都没有尝试的;它们都止步于关于平衡或不把所有钱都存起来这个更字面的论断。这种评价性的结尾触感是最高分数段的显著特征。
    • GRASavings turn a crisis into an expense: illness, job loss, a broken machine become problems rather than disasters.A colon replaces the comma splice used for the identical list at both 6.5 and 7.0, a small but genuine grammatical refinement that recurs as a consistent pattern across the 7.5 answers in this set.冒号代替了6.5和7.0中同一份列表所使用的逗号拼接句,是一处虽小却真实的语法打磨,在这一组7.5回答中反复出现,是一个一致的模式。

When I was six, my mother used to give me coins to put in the pagoda's donation box myself, and doing it with my own hands taught me more than any explanation of charity could have. Children who learn early that some of what they have is for others grow up seeing kindness as normal instead of something special. Wealth is never entirely self-made, it depends on workers, roads, laws, and luck too, so giving some of it back seems fair rather than saintly. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCI agree, but how they do it matters a lot.A full clause with "but" states the qualification directly. • LRWealth is never entirely self-made, it depends on workers, roads, laws, and luck too, so giving some of it back seems fair rather than saintly. The phrase 'never entirely self-made' is a common, slightly abstract way of describing how wealth depends on other people, chosen over a more concrete or varied description of who specifically contributes. A 7.0 answer might name a more specific example first; a 7.5 answer might use a more figurative phrase. The plain, general wording here is accurate and functional, representing the modest lexical range typical of Band 6.5.短语 'never entirely self-made' 是一种常见的、相当抽象的方式,用来形容财富依赖于他人,而不是更具体或更多样的描述方式,来说明具体是谁做出了贡献。7.0的回答可能会先举出一个更具体的例子;7.5的回答可能会使用更具比喻性的短语。这里平实、笼统的措辞是准确、可行的,体现了6.5分典型的适度词汇广度。

Wealth is never entirely self-made, it depends on workers, roads, laws and a fair amount of luck, so returning some of it seems fair rather than saintly. Whether it should be a duty enforced by tax or purely a personal choice is a genuine debate, I'd say both, with tax covering the basics and giving covering the rest. What matters most is that the giving is real and aimed at actual need rather than at reputation.

The 7.5 band trims it further by cutting "it's done", showing the compression continues one step further at the top band.这个确切的开头在7.0就已经出现了,比6.5那种用 'but' 组成的完整分句更紧凑。7.5的分数段把它进一步精简,去掉了 'it's done',说明这种压缩在最高分数段还会继续下去。
    • GRAWealth is never entirely self-made, it depends on workers, roads, laws and a fair amount of luck, so returning some of it seems fair rather than saintly. The same comma splice found at 6.5 persists here at 7.0, showing this looseness isn't yet fixed. The 7.5 band resolves this exact issue with a semicolon, the clearest single grammatical distinction between these two versions.6.5中出现的同一个逗号拼接问题在7.0中依然存在,说明这种松散还没有被修正。7.5的分数段用分号解决了这个确切的问题,这是这两个版本之间最明显的一处语法区别。
    • LRWhat matters most is that the giving is real and aimed at actual need rather than at reputation."Aimed at actual need rather than at reputation" is precise and well-balanced. The 7.5 band tightens this slightly to "directed at need rather than reputation", cutting the repeated "at" and "actual" for a more economical final sentence.'Aimed at actual need rather than at reputation' 精准且平衡得很好。7.5的分数段把它略微收紧为 'directed at need rather than reputation',去掉了重复的 'at' 和 'actual',让最后一句更精简。

Drops "it's done" for the bare "Agree, with a preference for how", and uses semicolons throughout in place of commas and "while" to link the contrasting examples.去掉了 'it's done',改用光秃的 'Agree, with a preference for how',并全篇用分号代替逗号和 'while' 来连接这两个对比性的例子。

Agree, with a preference for how. A businessman in Da Nang quietly paid for the rescue boats our district used in the last floods, and nobody knew until a journalist found out; another put his name on a hospital wing and never completed the payment — both are 'giving', and only one is worth admiring. Wealth is never entirely self-made; it depends on workers, roads, laws and luck, and returning some of it is fair rather than saintly. Whether it should be a duty enforced by tax or a choice is a real debate; I'd say both, with tax for the basics and giving for the rest. What matters is that the giving is real and directed at need rather than reputation.

    • FCAgree, with a preference for how.A four-word fragment opens the whole answer, more compact than the fuller openings at 6.5 and 7.0. This kind of confident brevity, stating both the position and its qualification in one breath, is a recognisable higher-band habit.一个四词的片段就开启了整个回答,比6.5和7.0更完整的开头都更紧凑。这种在一口气里既表明立场又表明限定条件的自信简洁,是最高分数段中一种可辨识的习惯。
    • GRAWealth is never entirely self-made; it depends on workers, roads, laws and luck, and returning some of it is fair rather than saintly.A semicolon replaces the comma splice used for the identical sentence at both 6.5 and 7.0, a small but genuine grammatical refinement. This kind of consistent semicolon-based fix recurs across several answers in this set.分号代替了6.5和7.0中对同一句子使用的逗号拼接句,是一处虽小却真实的语法打磨。这种一致的分号式修正,在这一组回答中多次出现。
    • LRWhat matters is that the giving is real and directed at need rather than reputation.A tightened version of the closing claim, cutting "most", "actual" and the repeated "at" found in the equivalent 7.0 sentence. This kind of economical trimming without loss of meaning is characteristic of the top band's control.一个收紧后的结尾论断,去掉了7.0对应句子中的 'most'、'actual' 以及重复的 'at'。这种不损失意思的经济化修剪,正是最高分数段掌控力的特征。

I think skills, time, and attention matter just as much. Our studio built a website for a homeless shelter for free, which was probably worth more to them than the donation we could have afforded. A retired teacher on my street also tutors the neighbours' children every evening for nothing. People can give what they know, give their time, or give things like clothes, food, or a spare room after a flood. Employers can hire people who need a chance, and neighbours can just notice things, like checking on an old man who hasn't been seen lately. There's also speaking up for people who can't speak for themselves. Money is easy to give, but help that involves actually showing up often changes more.

    • LRMoney is easy to give and easy to waste, but help that involves showing up is harder and often changes far more. The parallel phrase 'easy to give and easy to waste' pairs two similar grammatical structures around the same word ('easy') to make a quick contrast, a mildly crafted piece of phrasing rather than the plainest possible wording. A 6.5 answer would more likely state this as two separate plain sentences; a 7.5 answer might push the parallelism further. This compact, parallel phrasing shows the flexible-but-not-yet-idiomatic vocabulary use typical of Band 7.0.平行短语 'easy to give and easy to waste' 把两个相似的语法结构围绕同一个词('easy')配对起来,制造出一种快速的对比,是一种经过轻微加工、而不是最平淡表达方式的措辞。6.5的回答更可能把这写成两个独立的平淡句子;7.5的回答可能会把这种平行结构推得更远。这种紧凑的平行措辞展现了7分水平典型的灵活但尚未完全地道的词汇运用。

I think they're a bit more likely to be happy, but it's not really about the money itself. A former colleague who left his job to keep bees is the most content person I know, and he earns very little. But a cousin of mine, who also doesn't care much about money, is broke, anxious, and unhappy. So not caring about wealth only helps if you have enough to live on and something else to give your life purpose. People who chase money hard tend to compare themselves to others constantly and never feel satisfied, which isn't good for them. Research also seems to say that beyond a certain point, more money doesn't add much happiness.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI think they're a bit more likely to be happy, but it's not really about the money itself.A full sentence frames the position with "I think" and "but". People who chase money hard tend to compare themselves constantly and never quite arrive, which is corrosive over time. People who don't chase it avoid that particular trap, but not necessarily the others. Research seems to say that beyond a fairly modest level, more money adds surprisingly little happiness.

The 7.5 band drops "surprisingly" and "fairly", trusting the plain claim "adds little happiness" to carry its own weight without extra qualifiers.'Surprisingly little' 加上了一个带评价性的强化词。7.5的分数段去掉了 'surprisingly' 和 'fairly',相信平实的论断 'adds little happiness' 本身就足够有分量,不需要额外的限定语。

Drops the framing for the bare "Often because of when they were poor", and uses a colon before "he was hungry as a child" instead of a comma splice.去掉了框定句,改用光秃的 'Often because of when they were poor',并在 'he was hungry as a child' 前用冒号代替逗号拼接。

Often because of when they were poor. There's a landlord in Hue who owns a whole street and still mends his own sandals, and the explanation is simple: he was hungry as a child, and no amount of money has ever felt safe to him. Some wealthy people see spending as loss rather than pleasure; the number in the account is the achievement, and reducing it hurts. Some fear that generosity invites requests without end. Some are simply used to a modest life and see no reason to change it. And a few are just mean, though fewer than the stories suggest. The saddest version is the person who spent a life accumulating and never learned what it was for.

    • FCOften because of when they were poor.A short subordinate clause alone opens the whole answer, more compact than the full sentence at 6.5 or the hedge-extended version at 7.0. This kind of confident fragment is a recognisable higher-band opening move.单独一个从属分句就开启了整个回答,比6.5的完整句子或7.0带委婉语延伸的版本都更紧凑。这种自信的片段式开头是最高分数段中一种可辨识的开场手法。
    • GRAthe explanation is simple: he was hungry as a child, and no amount of money has ever felt safe to himA colon replaces the comma splice used for the equivalent sentence at both 6.5 and 7.0, a small but genuine grammatical refinement that recurs consistently across the 7.5 answers in this set.冒号代替了6.5和7.0对应句子中使用的逗号拼接句,是一处虽小却真实的语法打磨,在这一组7.5回答中反复出现。
    • LRThe saddest version is the person who spent a life accumulating and never learned what it was for.A lean, unhedged closing sentence with no intensifiers, tighter than the softened version at 7.0 ("honestly", "whole life", "never quite learned"). This kind of economical final line is characteristic of confident, higher-band closing statements.一个精简、不加委婉语、没有强化词的结尾句,比7.0中被软化的版本('honestly'、'whole life'、'never quite learned')更紧凑。这种经济化的结尾句正是自信、高分数段结尾陈述的特征。

Opens with "For some people, I'd say yes, clearly", spelling the position out with full phrasing before the example.以 'For some people, I'd say yes, clearly' 开头,在例子出现之前用完整的措辞把立场讲清楚。

For some people, I'd say yes, clearly. A client of mine once described his second boat to me as a 'necessary upgrade', completely seriously, and I don't think any amount of money would have satisfied him, because each level of wealth just brings new neighbours to compare with. The desire for more is partly built in, humans measure themselves against the people nearest to them, and that group keeps moving as you get richer. But I think the word 'always' is too strong. Plenty of people do stop, decide they have enough, and change how they live, my own parents are a good example of that. The difference seems to be whether money is treated like a tool or like a score, and you can have enough of a tool, but a score never really has a top.

    • FCFor some people, I'd say yes, clearly. The hedge "I'd say" is placed between "yes" and "clearly", a fairly standard hedging position. The 7.5 band removes the hedge and replaces the final comma with a dash, "For some people, clearly yes —", moving straight into the evidence with more confidence.委婉语 'I'd say' 被放在 'yes' 和 'clearly' 之间,是一个相当标准的委婉语位置。7.5的分数段去掉了这个委婉语,并把最后的逗号换成破折号,'For some people, clearly yes —',更自信地直接进入证据。
    • GRABut I think the word 'always' is too strong.A full sentence with "I think" frames the counter-claim. The 7.5 band drops the framing verb entirely, stating the counter-claim as a bare fact, "But the 'always' is too strong", a more assertive, economical structure.一个用 'I think' 组成的完整句子框定了反驳论点。7.5的分数段完全去掉了这个框定动词,把反驳论点表达成一个光秃的事实,'But the 'always' is too strong',结构更果断、更经济。
    • LRThe difference seems to be whether money is treated like a tool or like a score, and you can have enough of a tool, but a score never really has a top.The comparison 'treated like a tool' versus its implied opposite is a common, accessible way of framing the distinction, rather than a more specific or varied description of the two mindsets. A 7.0 answer might add a concrete example to sharpen the contrast; a 7.5 answer might use a more figurative pairing. The plain comparative phrasing here is accurate and clear, matching the modest lexical range typical of Band 6.5.'treated like a tool' 这个比较,以及它隐含的反面,是一种常见、容易理解的方式来框定这个区别,而不是更具体或更多样的方式来描述这两种心态。7.0的回答可能会加上一个具体的例子来锐化这个对比;7.5的回答可能会用一个更具比喻性的配对。这里平实的比较措辞是准确、清楚的,与6.5典型的适度词汇广度相符。

The desire for more is partly built in, humans measure themselves against the nearest group, and the group moves as you rise. But I think 'always' is too strong a word.

    • GRAFor some people, clearly yes, I'd say, a client once described his second boat to me as a 'necessary upgrade', with complete sincerityA comma splice strings the hedge and the anecdote together with no dash or full stop, functional but loose for 7.0. The 7.5 band fixes this exact structure with a dash after "clearly yes", a cleaner transition into the evidence.一个逗号拼接句把委婉语和轶事串联在一起,没有用破折号或句号断开,对7.0来说可行但松散。7.5的分数段用 'clearly yes' 后面的破折号修正了这个确切的结构,让过渡到证据的方式更干净。
    • FCThe desire for more is partly built in, humans measure themselves against the nearest group, and the group moves as you rise. The generalising move from the specific client example to 'humans' broadens the discussion outward, a natural step from illustration back to the general claim the question asked about. A 6.5 answer would more likely stay with the specific example without this explicit widening; a 7.5 answer might integrate the two more smoothly. This plain but clear broadening move keeps the answer on-topic, typical of Band 7.0's adequate coherence.从具体的客户例子推广到'人类'这个概括,是一种自然的手法,把论证从举例拉回到问题本身所问的那个普遍性论断。6.5的回答更可能停留在具体例子上,不做这种明确的拓展;7.5的回答可能会把两者结合得更顺畅。这种平实但清楚的拓展手法让回答保持切题,是7.0恰当连贯性的典型体现。
    • LRtools you can have enough of, scores don't really have a topA comma splice joins the final contrast in one sentence, with the hedge "don't really" softening the second half. The 7.5 band splits this into two short, separate sentences and drops the hedge, "Tools you can have enough of. Scores have no top.", a more confident, punchier close.一个逗号拼接句把最后的对比连接在一起,后半句用委婉语 'don't really' 软化了语气。7.5的分数段把它拆成两个短的独立句子,并去掉了委婉语,'Tools you can have enough of. Scores have no top.',收尾更自信、更有力。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCFor some people, clearly yes — a client once described his second boat to me as a 'necessary upgrade'A dash replaces the comma splice used to join the same hedge and anecdote at 7.0, a cleaner, more deliberate transition into the evidence. This kind of dash-led move into a supporting story recurs across several of the 7.5 answers in this set.破折号代替了7.0中用来连接同样这句委婉语和轶事的逗号拼接句,是过渡到证据时更干净、更刻意的方式。这种用破折号引出支撑性故事的手法,在这一组7.5回答中反复出现。
    • GRATools you can have enough of. Scores have no top.Two short, separate sentences close the answer with no conjunction between them, more emphatic than the single comma-spliced sentence used for the same contrast at both 6.5 and 7.0. This kind of short, punchy closing pair is a distinctive higher-band rhetorical device.两个短的、独立的句子在结尾处没有用任何连接词,比6.5和7.0中用逗号拼接的同一对比句更有力度。这种简短、有力的结尾对句是一种独特的高分数段修辞手法。
    • LRThe desire for more is partly built in: humans measure themselves against the nearest group, and the group moves as you rise.A colon replaces the comma splice found in the equivalent sentence at 7.0, a small but genuine refinement. "Built in" itself is a nicely idiomatic way of describing an innate tendency, already present from 7.0 upward.冒号代替了7.0对应句子中的逗号拼接问题,是一处虽小却真实的打磨。'Built in' 本身是一个相当地道的短语,用来形容一种与生俱来的倾向,从7.0起就已经存在了。
