6.5 分

A simple reported-speech sentence and a plain because-clause explain the change clearly but without grammatical variation, typical Band 6.5.一个简单的间接引语句子和一个朴素的 because 从句,清楚地解释了计划变更的原因,但没有语法上的变化,是6.5分的典型特征。

The plan I had to change was a short trip to Hoi An with my friend Hà. We had planned it for almost a month — we booked a small hotel near the river and planned to rent bicycles and eat at a few restaurants we had seen on TikTok.

The reason I had to change it was work. Two days before the trip, my boss told me that a client had moved our project deadline forward by one week, because they needed to launch the app earlier than planned. As the UI designer, I had to finish several screens by Monday, which was exactly when we were supposed to travel.

It wasn't too difficult to change, honestly, because Hoi An is close to Da Nang and the hotel let us cancel without losing much money. The harder part was telling Hà, because she had already asked for time off work. In the end, she went with another friend instead, and I stayed in the office most of the weekend.

How I felt about it was mixed. I was disappointed, because I had been looking forward to a slow weekend by the river. But I also understood that the deadline was important for the studio, so I didn't feel too upset. We are planning to go to Hoi An again next month instead.

  • GRAmy boss told me that a client had moved our project deadline forward by one weekThis is a standard reported-speech sentence — "told me that..." followed by a past perfect clause ("had moved") to correctly mark the deadline change as happening before the telling — showing accurate control of one specific grammatical pattern without extending into further complexity within the same sentence. The precise detail "by one week" adds useful specificity without requiring any additional clause, and the whole structure stays self-contained rather than linking to a consequence or reaction in the same breath. This single, accurately handled structure is representative of the basic-but-correct complex grammar the descriptor expects at Band 6.5.
  • FCIt wasn't too difficult to change, honestly, because Hoi An is close to Da NangThe speaker answers the implicit "was it hard to change?" question directly, softened by the natural spoken interjection "honestly," and then supports it with exactly one concrete reason (geographic proximity). This single-reason pattern is enough to satisfy the question without layering in the other reason (the hotel's flexible cancellation policy) into the same sentence — that detail arrives separately afterward — consistent with the "one clear reason or example is enough" standard for Band 6.5 fluency. "Honestly" itself is a common but genuinely natural piece of spoken discourse marking.说话人直接回答了隐含的问题"was it hard to change?",用自然的口语插入语"honestly"加以软化,然后用恰好一个具体理由(地理位置近)来支撑它。这种单一理由的模式足以满足这个问题,而不需要把另一个理由(酒店灵活的取消政策)也叠加进同一句话里——那个细节是在后面单独出现的——符合Band 6.5流利度"一个清楚的理由或例子就足够了"这一标准。"Honestly"本身是一个常见却又确实自然的口语话语标记。
  • LRI was disappointed, because I had been looking forward to a slow weekend by the river."Disappointed" and "looking forward to" are both common, easily accessible phrases for describing anticipation and its frustration, rather than more specific or vivid alternatives ("gutted," "had been counting down to") that a higher band might reach for in the same emotional beat. The past perfect continuous "had been looking forward to" is grammatically appropriate and adds a small sense of duration, but the vocabulary itself stays firmly within the everyday register the Band 6.5 descriptor expects, even as the detail "a slow weekend by the river" gives the sentence some concrete texture."Disappointed"和"looking forward to"都是描述期待及其落空时常见、易懂的表达,而不是更高分段在同样的情感节点上可能会用的更具体或更生动的替代说法("gutted"、"had been counting down to")。过去完成进行时"had been looking forward to"在语法上恰当,也增添了一点持续时间感,但词汇本身仍然牢牢停留在Band 6.5描述语所期待的日常语域内,即便细节"a slow weekend by the river"为这句话增添了一些具体的质感。
7.0 分

The contrastive clause 'rather than several hours away on a beach' and the reflective line 'family came first, and there wasn't really any other option in my mind' show natural, reasoned development fitting Band 7.0.对比从句 'rather than several hours away on a beach'(而不是待在几小时车程外的海滩),以及反思性的一句'家人永远摆在第一位,我心里其实没有别的选择',都展现出符合7.0分水平的自然而有理有据的展开。

The plan I had to change was a weekend trip to Nha Trang that I'd arranged with two university friends to celebrate finishing a big project at work. We'd booked the hotel, the bus tickets, everything, about three weeks in advance.

The reason I needed to change it was that my grandmother was admitted to hospital just two days before we were supposed to leave. It wasn't anything life-threatening in the end, but at the time nobody in the family knew exactly how serious it was, so I felt like I needed to be around rather than several hours away on a beach.

Changing the plan wasn't too difficult in a practical sense — the bus tickets were refundable, and the hotel let us move the booking to a later date without much trouble. The harder part was telling my friends, because we'd all been looking forward to it for weeks, and I felt bad cancelling on them at such short notice, especially since one of them had already taken the day off work.

In terms of how I felt about it, I was disappointed, obviously, but honestly it wasn't a difficult decision to make once I knew my grandmother was in hospital — family came first, and there wasn't really any other option in my mind. My friends were understanding about it too, which helped a lot, and we ended up rearranging the trip for the following month instead, with my grandmother back home and doing much better by then. Looking back, I think it actually made me appreciate that weekend away even more when we finally did go.

  • GRAnobody in the family knew exactly how serious it was, so I felt like I needed to be around rather than several hours away on a beachThis sentence combines a result clause, "so I felt like...," with a rejected-alternative phrase, "rather than several hours away on a beach," handling two distinct grammatical moves in one accurate, naturally-paced sentence. It's the comfortable complex-sentence mix the 7.0 descriptor targets, without the added layering, like a conditional or a cleft, that would push it to 7.5. The contrast with "on a beach" also vividly captures exactly what the trip would have looked like, grounding the abstract decision in a concrete image.这句话把一个结果从句"so I felt like..."与一个被否定的替代方案短语"rather than several hours away on a beach"结合在一起,在一句准确、节奏自然的话里处理了两个不同的语法动作。这正是Band 7.0描述所追求的那种自如的复合句混合,没有像条件句或分裂句那样的额外叠加,而那种叠加才会把它推向7.5水平。与"on a beach"的对比也生动地捕捉到这趟旅行原本会是什么样子,用一个具体的画面为这个抽象的决定提供了依据。
  • FCfamily came first, and there wasn't really any other option in my mindThis gives a short, reflective justification for why cancelling wasn't actually a difficult decision, going beyond simply stating the fact of cancellation to explain the reasoning behind it, which is the kind of development the 7.0 descriptor asks for. A 6.5 answer might just say "I decided to stay because of my grandmother" without this added interpretive layer. It also sets up the slight tension resolved in the next sentence, where the friends turn out to be understanding.这段话给出了一个简短、反思性的理由,说明为什么取消行程其实并不是一个艰难的决定,超越了单纯陈述取消这一事实,去解释背后的推理过程,这正是Band 7.0描述所要求的那种发展方式。Band 6.5的答案可能只会说"I decided to stay because of my grandmother",而没有这层额外的阐释。它也埋下了在下一句得到化解的一丝小小张力——朋友们后来证明是很能理解的。
  • LRsuch short notice"Short notice" is a fixed, natural collocation that a fluent English speaker reaches for automatically in this exact situation — cancelling plans late — rather than a more awkward paraphrase like "telling them very late." It's the single natural collocation the 7.0 lexical descriptor specifically calls for, sitting among otherwise plain vocabulary. It also captures why telling the friends felt harder than the logistics of cancelling, since it's the lateness of the notice, not just the cancellation itself."Short notice"是一个固定的自然搭配,流利的英语使用者在这种情境下——临时取消计划——会自然而然地想到它,而不是像"telling them very late"这样笨拙的转述。这正是Band 7.0词汇描述特别要求的那"一个自然搭配",出现在其余平实的词汇之中。它也捕捉到了为什么告诉朋友们这件事比取消行程本身的后勤安排更让人为难的原因——真正的问题在于通知得太晚,而不仅仅是取消这件事本身。
7.5 分

The pointed contrast 'the plan had been ours, and now it was nobody's' and the hypothetical about a plan 'built on one friend giving up a chance like that' show the precision and grammatical range of Band 7.5.犀利的对比句 'the plan had been ours, and now it was nobody's'(这计划原本是我们的,如今却不属于任何人了),以及关于一个'建立在朋友放弃这样一个机会之上'的计划的假设性论述,都展现出7.5分的精准度与语法广度。

The plan I had to change was the biggest one I'd made in years. For most of last year, a friend, Tuấn, and I were preparing to leave our jobs and start our own small design studio together. He'd handle clients and business; I'd handle design. We had a name, a spreadsheet of how long our savings would last, and, by November, a deposit on a small office above a café near the river. The plan was to hand in our notices on the same Monday in January.

Why I needed to change it was that in early December, Tuấn was offered a job in Singapore — a senior role at a company he'd admired for years, at roughly three times his salary. He asked me what he should do, and I told him the honest thing, which was that he should take it, because a plan built on one friend giving up a chance like that would never have felt clean.

How difficult it was depends on which part. Practically, it was easy: I sent one email to the landlord and lost the deposit, and the spreadsheet simply stopped mattering. Emotionally, it was harder than I expected, because I'd been living inside the plan for a year. I'd stopped caring about my job on the assumption that I'd be leaving it, and now I had to care again, which is a strange thing to have to do on purpose.

How I felt was a mixture I'm still slightly embarrassed by. There was disappointment, obviously, and some loneliness — the plan had been ours, and now it was nobody's. But underneath it there was a relief I hadn't admitted to, because I'd been more frightened of the risk than I'd let Tuấn see. He's happy in Singapore. I'm still at the studio, and I've kept the name. It might be a plan again one day, and I've noticed I'm less scared of it now.

  • GRAa plan built on one friend giving up a chance like that would never have felt cleanThis sentence uses a hypothetical structure (an unreal conditional idea, "would never have felt clean") built around a participial clause ("one friend giving up a chance like that") acting almost as the condition itself, rather than a standard if-clause. That density of sophisticated, mostly error-free grammar packed into one compact sentence is what the 7.5 tier means by "varied complex structures... mostly error-free"; a 7.0 answer would more likely state this as a simpler "I didn't think it was fair to ask him to give up the job." The abstract phrasing also captures a moral judgement rather than a plain fact, adding real weight to the decision being explained.这句话用了一个假设结构(一个非真实条件的设想,"would never have felt clean"),建立在一个分词短语("one friend giving up a chance like that")之上,这个分词短语几乎充当了条件本身,而不是一个标准的if从句。这种压缩在一个简短句子里、精妙且几乎无误的语法密度,正是7.5档位所说的"多样的复杂结构……基本无误";Band 7.0的答案更可能把这表达成更简单的一句"I didn't think it was fair to ask him to give up the job."这种抽象的措辞也捕捉到的是一种道德判断,而不是单纯的事实,为正在解释的这个决定增添了真正的分量。
  • LRthe plan had been ours, and now it was nobody'sThe pointed grammatical contrast between the possessive pronouns "ours" and "nobody's" does the emotional work here economically, without needing extra descriptive vocabulary — a precise, compact way of expressing loss rather than a longer explanation like "we don't own the plan together anymore." This kind of economical, well-chosen contrast is what the 7.5 tier's Lexical Resource descriptor means by "precise... words and collocations used naturally"; a 7.0 answer would be more likely to spell the feeling out in more words rather than trust a single grammatical opposition to carry it. It also lands right after "a mixture I'm still slightly embarrassed by," reinforcing the reflective, honest tone of that whole paragraph. 它也紧接在"a mixture I'm still slightly embarrassed by"之后出现,强化了那整段反思、坦诚的语气。
  • FCThere was disappointment, obviously, and some lonelinessNaming two distinct, specific emotions rather than a single vague feeling like "sad" shows the speaker genuinely examining their own reaction rather than summarising it in one word. This kind of honest, itemised emotional reflection is the evaluative depth the 7.5 tier expects beyond plain narration; a 7.0 answer would more likely offer a single blanket statement such as "I felt quite sad about it." The word "obviously" also does quiet work here, implying the speaker assumes the listener already expects disappointment, which leaves room to introduce the less expected feeling of loneliness.说出两种具体、不同的情绪,而不是像"sad"这样单一、模糊的感受,说明说话人真正在审视自己的反应,而不是用一个词把它概括了事。这种诚实、条分缕析的情感反思,正是7.5档位所期待的、超越单纯叙事的评价深度;Band 7.0的答案更可能给出一句笼统的陈述,比如"I felt quite sad about it.""obviously"(显然)这个词在这里也默默地发挥着作用,暗示说话人认为听者已经预料到了失望的情绪,这就留出了空间来引入那种不那么被预期的孤独感。

The 6.5 answer moves from small examples to big ones ("from small to big") using plain connectors like "and" and "so", closing with a direct observation about long-term plans.这篇6.5分答案从小例子过渡到大例子("from small to big"),使用"and"和"so"这类平淡的连接词,并以一个关于长期计划的直接观察收尾。

People make plans at every level. My mother writes a weekly market plan on the fridge, and my studio writes a quarterly plan on a wall, so both are really just lists of what to do and when. Daily plans, like meals or the route to work, are so normal we do not even call them plans. Weekly plans usually cover work, exercise and who collects the children. Then there are yearly plans, like holidays or savings. Long plans about a career or a house are made too, but people change them often and rarely write them down.

    • FCso both are really just lists of what to do and whenThis clause states the comparison plainly and directly with "so", rather than building toward it. A 7.5 answer would more likely delay this observation for effect instead of stating it immediately.这个分句用"so"平淡而直接地陈述了这个比较,而不是逐步铺垫到这个结论。7.5分答案更可能会为了效果而延迟这个观察,而不是立刻说出来。
    • LRso normal we do not even call them plansThis is plain, everyday phrasing for the idea of routine, without any more distinctive or figurative vocabulary.这是表达"routine"这个想法时平淡、日常化的措辞,没有更独特或更具修辞色彩的词汇。
    • GRALong plans about a career or a house are made too, but people change them often and rarely write them down. This sentence chains three ideas with "but" and "and", accurate but structurally plain compared to the dash-linked constructions of higher bands.这个句子用"but"和"and"把三个想法串联起来,准确但结构平淡,相比之下更高分数段会使用破折号连接的结构。
    7.0 分

The 7.0 answer opens with the compact fragment "Plans at every scale" and uses a semicolon plus dash to link the mother's and the studio's plans directly, giving the comparison more natural flow than the 6.5 list.这篇7.0分答案以紧凑的片段"Plans at every scale"开篇,并用分号加破折号直接连接了母亲的计划和工作室的计划,比6.5分的列表式写法更有自然的流动感。

Plans at every scale, honestly, and they look surprisingly alike. My mother writes a weekly market plan on the fridge; my studio writes a quarterly roadmap on a wall — both lists of what to buy or do, in what order, by when. Daily plans, like meals or the route to work, are so routine we don't even call them plans. Weekly ones cover work, exercise and who's collecting the children, and then there's the annual layer: holidays, savings targets, the year's big purchase. The long, vague plans about career or a house get revised constantly and are rarely written down at all.

    • FCPlans at every scale, honestly, and they look surprisingly alikeThe spoken connector "honestly" is dropped into a clipped opening fragment, a more conversational rhythm than the fuller opening sentence a 6.5 answer would use.口语化的连接词"honestly"被放进了一个简短的开头片段里,比6.5分答案会用的更完整的开篇句更有对话式的节奏感。
    • LRthe annual layer: holidays, savings targets, the year's big purchase"The annual layer" is a more precise, structural noun phrase than the plain "yearly plans" a 6.5 answer would use for the same category."The annual layer"是一个比6.5分答案会用的平淡的"yearly plans"更精确、更具结构感的名词短语,用来表达同一个类别。
    • GRAMy mother writes a weekly market plan on the fridge; my studio writes a quarterly roadmap on a wall — both lists of what to buy or do, in what order, by whenA semicolon and a dash chain three clauses into one sentence, compressing the comparison, a moderately complex structure beyond the separate "and"-joined sentences of a 6.5 answer.分号和破折号把三个分句串联成一个句子,压缩了这个比较,是一种超越6.5分答案中用"and"连接的独立句子的中等复杂结构。

The 7.5 answer closes with the compact aphorism "a mix of habit and hope, and only the habits reliably happen", a sharper evaluative distinction than the plainer observations of the 6.5 and 7.0 bands.这篇7.5分答案以紧凑的格言式表达"a mix of habit and hope, and only the habits reliably happen"收尾,是一个比6.5分和7.0分更平淡的观察更犀利的评价性区分。

I think it is because planning is the stage where nothing has gone wrong yet. The year I enjoyed most was the year my friend Tuấn and I planned our studio, with the spreadsheet and the imagined office, before we had to deal with any real problems. Plans give people a feeling of control over a future that is actually uncertain, and this is calming for people who worry a lot. Planning also lets you imagine a better version of your life before it happens. For some people, it is simply satisfying, like a good plan is a tidy room.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCFor some people, it is simply satisfying, like a good plan is a tidy room. This closing sentence uses a plain, direct simile ("like a good plan is a tidy room") stated as its own separate idea. A 7.0 answer would more likely fold this comparison more smoothly into the flow of the sentence.这个结尾句用了一个平淡、直接的明喻("like a good plan is a tidy room"),作为一个独立的想法陈述出来。7.0分答案更可能会把这个比较更顺畅地融入句子的行文中。

Because planning is the part where nothing's gone wrong yet, honestly. The 6.5 answer gives a direct "important for some, not for others" opinion supported by one clear contrast (sister vs. father), using plain connectors like "but" and "because".这篇6.5分答案给出了一个直接的"对某些人重要,对另一些人不重要"的观点,配有一个清晰的对比(姐姐对父亲),使用"but"和"because"这类平淡的连接词。

I think it is important for some people, but not really necessary for others. My sister has two children, a job and a house, and she uses a colour-coded calendar, or she would not manage. My father has never planned a single day in his life, and he has never been late for anything, because his life has a fixed shape. The need for planning gets bigger with more responsibilities, like children or other people depending on you. A student with a regular routine can live well without planning much. But everyone needs some sense of what is important.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCBut everyone needs some sense of what is important. This short closing sentence restates a general rule plainly and directly, without further development. A 7.5 answer would more likely add a qualifying clause about how that sense is achieved.这个简短的结尾句平淡而直接地重述了一条一般性规则,没有进一步展开。7.5分答案更可能会加入一个限定分句,说明这种认识是如何达成的。
    • LRbecause his life has a fixed shape"A fixed shape" is a plain, slightly abstract phrase, though it lacks the more vivid extension a higher band might add to the same image."A fixed shape"是一个平淡、略带抽象色彩的短语,不过它缺少更高分数段可能会为同一意象添加的更生动的延伸。
    • GRAMy sister has two children, a job and a house, and she uses a colour-coded calendar, or she would not manage. This sentence lists three items with "and" before adding a conditional clause with "or", accurate but structurally plain compared to higher bands.这个句子用"and"列出了三个项目,然后又加了一个用"or"引出的条件分句,准确但结构平淡,相比更高分数段而言。
    7.0 分

Important for some lives, honestly, and pretty unnecessary for others. My sister runs two children, a job and a household on a colour-coded calendar and would genuinely struggle without it; my father has never planned a day in his life and has never once been late, because his life has a fixed shape that does the planning for him. The need for planning really rises with the number of moving parts — children, multiple jobs, people depending on you. A student or someone with regular hours can live well on habit alone. What everyone needs, I'd say, is some sense of priority, so the important things don't get buried under the urgent ones.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FChis life has a fixed shape that does the planning for himThis personifying metaphor extends the plain phrase "a fixed shape" a 6.5 answer uses into a fuller, more reflective image, giving the idea a natural spoken elaboration.这个拟人化的隐喻,把6.5分答案使用的平淡短语"a fixed shape"扩展成了一个更完整、更具反思性的意象,给这个想法赋予了自然的口语化阐述。

Important for some lives, unnecessary for others. My sister runs two children, a job and a household on a colour-coded calendar and would drown without it; my father has never planned a day in his life and has never been late to anything, because his life has a fixed shape that does the planning for him. The need for planning rises with the number of moving parts — children, multiple jobs, other people depending on you. A student or a single person with regular hours can live well on habit. What everyone needs is some sense of priority, so the important things don't get lost under the urgent ones. Whether that takes a calendar or just attention depends entirely on the person.

    为什么是这个分数

A 7.0 answer would more likely add a reflective aside onto this same claim.这个句子用"and"列出了两个相关的事实,直接陈述,没有进一步展开。7.0分答案更可能会在同样的论断上加一个反思性的插入语。

I would choose the things my own family has needed most: a hospital that is easy to reach, a school that is actually good, and streets that are safe enough for my sister to walk home at night. Health, education and safety are the base, because without them nothing else is really possible. After that, fairness, meaning effort is rewarded and rules apply to everyone. Then the environment, because a society that pollutes its own air and water is not really improving. Public debate often focuses on things above these basics, but the basics decide most people's lives.

    • FCSocieties also tend to build institutions to steady themselves after periods of upheaval. This extra sentence adds a broader historical pattern absent from the more limited 6.5 and 7.0 versions, deepening the reasoning before the final guess.这个额外的句子加入了一个更宏观的历史模式,是更有限的6.5分和7.0分版本所没有的,在最终的猜测之前深化了推理。
    • LRbuild institutions to steady themselves after periods of upheaval"Upheaval" is a precise, weighty noun choice, more distinctive than the plainer phrase "periods of big change" a 6.5 answer uses for the same idea."Upheaval"是一个精确、有分量的名词选择,比6.5分答案用来表达同样想法的更平淡的短语"periods of big change"更独特。
    • GRAthere's a visible reaction already, with people choosing slower food, slower travel, older toolsA "with"-phrase attaches a list of examples to the main clause without a separate verb, a more compact construction than a full relative clause listing the same examples.一个"with"短语把一份例子列表附加到主句上,而不需要单独的动词,比列出同样例子的完整定语从句更紧凑。
