The plain statement 'because I think that's important' and the simple chronological structure of the story keep the account clear and correct but linguistically modest, typical of Band 6.5.朴实的一句'because I think that's important',加上简单的时间顺序叙事结构,使整段叙述清晰准确但语言层面比较朴素,是Band 6.5的典型表现。

The person I want to talk about is my younger sister, Vy. She is studying in Ho Chi Minh City, and about two months ago she called me on Zalo late at night. She sounded really stressed.

Her problem was her final exams. She had four exams in one week, and she also had a part-time job at a coffee shop. She felt she didn't have enough time to study, and she was scared of failing one of her subjects.

I listened to her for a while first, because I think that's important. Then I gave her some advice. I told her to make a simple study timetable, just for one week, and to study a little every day instead of everything at the last minute. I also told her to ask her manager for fewer shifts during exam week, which she was a bit afraid to do.

In the end, my advice really helped her. She made the timetable, she talked to her manager, and her manager understood and gave her more free time. She passed all four exams, and she told me she felt much calmer during the exam week. Now she still uses a timetable every semester, and she says it was the best advice I ever gave her.

  • GRAI told her to make a simple study timetable, just for one week, and to study a little every day instead of everything at the last minute. Two infinitive clauses ('to make a simple study timetable' and 'to study a little every day') are coordinated under the single reporting verb 'told her' — accurate, but relying on listing rather than genuine subordination or varied clause types. A 7.0 answer might embed a reason clause inside the same sentence ('so that she wouldn't leave everything until the last minute'); a 7.5 answer might restructure it around a contrast entirely. Here the grammar stays within the 'mostly simple sentences plus a few basic complex ones' ceiling of 6.5 while clearly reporting the concrete advice given.两个不定式从句('to make a simple study timetable' 和 'to study a little every day')在同一个转述动词 'told her' 之下并列出现——表达准确,但依赖的是罗列,而非真正的从属结构或多样的从句类型。Band 7.0的答案可能会在同一句话中嵌入一个原因从句('so that she wouldn't leave everything until the last minute');Band 7.5的答案则可能围绕一个对比关系完全重构整句。这里的语法仍停留在Band 6.5“大多是简单句,外加少数基本复合句”的上限之内,同时清楚地转述了所给出的具体建议。
  • LRshe felt much calmer during the exam week'Calmer' is a plain, high-frequency comparative adjective describing emotion, chosen instead of a more specific alternative like 'more at ease' or a figurative one a 7.5 answer might use. A 7.0 answer might reach for a slightly more flexible phrase to describe the feeling; here the choice is correct and communicative but deliberately unadorned, matching the 'everyday, high-frequency words... at most one slightly less-common word' ceiling of Band 6.5, keeping focus on clearly reporting the outcome rather than showcasing vocabulary.'Calmer' 是一个平实、高频的比较级形容词,用来描述情绪,说话人没有选用像 'more at ease' 这样更具体的替代词,也没有用Band 7.5答案可能会用的比喻性说法。Band 7.0的答案可能会用稍微灵活一点的说法来描述这种感受;而这里的选词准确、能传达意思,却是刻意保持朴素,符合Band 6.5“日常高频词汇……最多一个稍不常见的词”的上限,把重点放在清楚地交代结果上,而不是展示词汇量。
  • FCIn the end, my advice really helped her. This sentence introduces the outcome with a simple time marker, 'In the end,' and a flat evaluative claim, functioning as a topic sentence for the details that follow rather than a nuanced or hedged reflection. A 7.0 answer would likely follow this claim immediately with a specific reason woven into the same sentence; a 7.5 answer might hedge the claim itself, e.g. 'I'd like to think my advice helped, though she also worked hard herself.' Here the statement is clear and sufficient, exactly the 'one clear reason or example is enough' standard for 6.5, before the answer moves into the concrete supporting facts about the timetable and the manager.这句话用一个简单的时间标记 'In the end' 引出结果,并给出一个平铺直叙的评价性论断,起到了统领后续细节的主题句作用,而非细腻或带有保留意味的反思。Band 7.0的答案很可能会紧接着在同一句话中织入一个具体理由;Band 7.5的答案则可能对这个论断本身加以保留,例如 'I'd like to think my advice helped, though she also worked hard herself.'。这里的陈述清晰且足够,正好符合Band 6.5“一个清晰的理由或例子就足够”的标准,随后答案才转向关于时间表和经理的具体佐证事实。

The comparative structure 'rather than trying to handle everything at once' and the reflective closing about asking for support show natural development and a comfortable range of grammar typical of Band 7.0.比较结构'rather than trying to handle everything at once',加上结尾处关于寻求帮助的反思,展现出Band 7.0典型的自然内容展开和运用自如的语法范围。

A time I gave advice to someone was about four months ago, when my friend Linh messaged me late one evening sounding really stressed. She'd just started a new job at a marketing agency, and she was struggling to keep up with the workload in her first few weeks.

Her main problem was that she felt she had to say yes to every task her manager gave her, even when she already had too much on her plate, because she didn't want to seem incapable so early in the job. She was staying at the office until nine or ten most nights, and she told me she was barely sleeping properly.

I listened to her for a while first, since I think that's usually more helpful than jumping straight to advice. After that, I suggested she try keeping a simple list each morning of what actually needed to be done that day, rather than trying to handle everything at once. I also encouraged her to talk to her manager honestly about her workload, instead of just quietly struggling and hoping things would improve on their own.

A couple of weeks later, Linh told me she'd finally had that conversation with her manager, and it turned out he hadn't even realised how much she was taking on. Since then, her hours have become more reasonable, and she says she feels far less overwhelmed. I think my advice helped her see that asking for support wasn't a sign of weakness, and she still thanks me for pushing her to speak up. Looking back, I think the timing of that conversation mattered too, since she might not have listened as openly if I'd brought it up before she'd already reached her limit.

  • GRArather than trying to handle everything at onceThe non-finite 'rather than + gerund' clause attaches a contrast directly onto the main verb without needing a second finite clause ('instead of she tried to handle everything'), which a lower band would likely require. A 6.5 answer would probably split this into 'She tried to make a list. She didn't try to do everything at once,' losing the compact comparison; a 7.5 answer might vary the structure further with a fronted contrastive clause. This non-finite construction is accurate and unshowy, matching 7.0's 'comfortable mix of simple and complex sentences,' and it captures the specific prioritising advice given to Linh.非限定的 'rather than + 动名词' 从句把一个对比直接附加在主要动词上,而不需要第二个限定从句('instead of she tried to handle everything'),而较低分数段很可能需要用到后者。Band 6.5 的答案大概会把这拆成 'She tried to make a list. She didn't try to do everything at once,',从而失去了这种紧凑的比较;Band 7.5 的答案可能会用一个前置的对比从句进一步变换结构。这个非限定结构准确而不张扬,符合 Band 7.0 简单句与复合句自如混合的特征,它也精准捕捉到了给 Linh 的具体的优先级排序建议。
  • LRquietly strugglingPairing the adverb 'quietly' with 'struggling' creates a small but vivid picture of Linh's coping style — suffering in silence rather than asking for help — instead of a flatter phrase like 'having a hard time.' A 6.5 answer would likely use only 'struggling' without the modifier; a 7.5 answer might replace the whole phrase with something more idiomatic, like 'suffering in silence.' Here the two-word combination adds real nuance without drawing attention to itself, the flexible-but-natural vocabulary 7.0 rewards, and it directly explains why the advice to speak up mattered.
  • FCI think my advice helped her see that asking for support wasn't a sign of weaknessThis closing sentence reframes the concrete outcome (shorter hours, better sleep) into an abstract insight about Linh's mindset, moving the answer from what happened to what it meant rather than simply summarising events already given. A 6.5 answer would likely just restate the result plainly ('She feels less stressed now'); this one draws a broader lesson from the specific situation. That shift from narration to reflection is the developed coherence 7.0 targets, reinforced by the final sentence about timing, which adds a second layer of reflection on top of it.

The precise phrase 'a sense of control and a bit of encouragement' and the hedged opener 'I think my advice helped, at least to...' show the flexible, evaluative language typical of Band 7.5.精准的短语'a sense of control and a bit of encouragement',加上带有缓和语气的开头'I think my advice helped, at least to...',展现出Band 7.5典型的灵活评价性语言。

A time when I gave advice to someone was actually just a few months ago, when my younger cousin Quân called me from Hue. He'd just finished his first year at university, and honestly, he sounded pretty stressed out. The main problem was that he was struggling to keep up with his coursework, especially his computer programming classes. He was feeling overwhelmed and a bit lost, since his background was mostly in maths, not coding.

Quân knows I work in tech, so I guess he thought I might have some ideas. I listened to him vent for a while-I could really tell he was under pressure. After hearing him out, I suggested that instead of trying to tackle everything at once, he should focus on building a daily routine and breaking his studies into smaller, manageable chunks. I recommended using an app like Notion to organize his assignments, and I told him about some online resources that had helped me back in university, like YouTube tutorials and the freeCodecamp website. I also reminded him not to compare himself too harshly with classmates-everyone learns at a different pace.

A few weeks later, Quân sent me a message saying he'd started following my advice. He was using Notion and setting up a weekly plan, which apparently helped him see his progress more clearly. He said he still found some of the coursework tough, but at least he didn't feel as panicked anymore. I think my advice helped, at least to give him a sense of control and a bit of encouragement. We still check in every now and then, and it's nice to see he's finding his own way now.

  • LRsounded pretty stressed out'Stressed out' is a two-word phrasal collocation intensified by 'pretty' rather than a plain single adjective like 'stressed,' giving the opening a natural spoken register from the first sentence. A 7.0 answer might use just 'stressed'; a 6.5 answer would almost certainly use a bare, plain word. This casually precise phrasing, deployed without drawing attention to itself, is what 'several precise or less-common words and collocations used naturally' looks like at 7.5, and it signals the emotional stakes of Quân's situation before any detail is given.'Stressed out' 是一个由 'pretty' 加强语气的两词搭配,而不是像 'stressed' 这样单一平淡的形容词,从第一句话起就为开篇赋予了自然的口语语域。Band 7.0的答案可能只会用 'stressed';Band 6.5的答案则几乎肯定会用一个朴素的单词。这种不张扬却又恰到好处的精准措辞,正是7.5分“自然使用多个精准或不太常见的词汇与搭配”的体现,并在给出任何细节之前,就先传递出阮的处境所带来的情感分量。
  • FCI think my advice helped, at least to give him a sense of control and a bit of encouragement. The hedge 'I think' plus the qualifier 'at least' deliberately scale back what could have been a flat claim of success ('my advice helped'), separating emotional benefit (a sense of control, encouragement) from full resolution of the coding struggle mentioned a sentence earlier. A 7.0 answer would likely make the flatter, unhedged claim; this measured, self-aware framing is exactly the evaluative depth the 7.5 tier rewards over plain description of outcomes.缓和语 'I think' 加上限定词 'at least' 有意地收敛了原本可能是一句平铺直叙的成功宣称('my advice helped'),把情感上的收获(掌控感、受到鼓励)与前一句提到的编程困境是否得到彻底解决区分开来。Band 7.0的答案很可能会给出更平直、不加保留的断言;而这种分寸得当、具有自我意识的措辞方式,正是Band 7.5层级所奖励的那种评价深度,胜过对结果的单纯描述。
  • GRAAfter hearing him out, I suggested that instead of trying to tackle everything at once, he should focus on building a daily routine and breaking his studies into smaller, manageable chunks. The sentence opens with a fronted participial phrase ('After hearing him out'), embeds a contrastive 'instead of trying to X, he should Y' structure, and closes with two parallel present-participle phrases ('building a daily routine and breaking his studies into smaller, manageable chunks') — three distinct devices working together without error. A 7.0 answer would likely deliver this advice across two or three shorter sentences; this single controlled, varied-opening sentence is the 'wide range of complex structures... mostly error-free' descriptor for 7.5 in action, and it reports the actual advice given in one breath.这句话以一个前置的分词短语开头('After hearing him out'),嵌入了一个对比结构 'instead of trying to X, he should Y',并以两个并列的现在分词短语结尾('building a daily routine and breaking his studies into smaller, manageable chunks')——三种不同的语法手段协同运作且全程无误。Band 7.0的答案很可能会把这条建议拆成两三句较短的句子来表达;而这句掌控得当、开头富于变化的长句,正是Band 7.5“复杂结构范围广……基本无误”这一描述语的实际体现,并且一气呵成地转述了实际给出的建议。

Uses the plain connector "so" twice to move from situation to action, keeping the story in short, linear steps.两次使用平实的连接词'so',从情境过渡到行动,让整个故事保持在简短、线性的步骤中。

I think people usually ask for help when they face a situation that's new or a bit overwhelming. Last month my friend Thao was preparing for her first job interview at a design agency in Hoi An, and she was quite anxious about it. She messaged me late one evening asking about what questions to expect, so I gave her some tips and did a mock interview with her over video call. I'd say moments like that, when the stakes feel high, are the most common times people ask for help. Sometimes it's just about needing a second opinion, but big transitions bring it out the most.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI think people usually ask for help when they face a situation that's new or a bit overwhelming.A plain topic sentence states the claim directly, without a transition word before the example. The 7.5 band adds "For example" before the story, signalling the shift from claim to evidence more explicitly, a small but real fluency marker.一个平实的主题句直接陈述了论断,在举例之前没有过渡词。7.5分版本在故事前加了'For example',更明确地标示出从论断到例证的转换,这是一个虽小但真实的流畅度标志。
    • LRso I gave her some tips and did a mock interview with her over video call"Gave her some tips" is plain, functional phrasing. The 7.5 band upgrades this to "I shared some practical tips", a slightly more precise and natural collocation for the same action.'Gave her some tips'是平实、功能性的表达。7.5分版本把它升级成'I shared some practical tips',对同一动作用了略微更精确、更自然的搭配。
    • GRAShe messaged me late one evening asking about what questions to expect, so I gave her some tips and did a mock interview with her over video call.A single sentence links two actions with "so", correct but linear. The 7.5 band splits the equivalent content into two sentences and adds a reason clause with "Since" before the second action, a more layered structure.一个句子用'so'连接了两个动作,正确但呈线性。7.5分版本把相应的内容拆成两句话,并在第二个动作前加了一个用'Since'引出的理由从句,结构更有层次。

Adds the hedge "honestly" and the phrase "For example" to introduce the story a little more naturally than the bare list at 6.5.加入了缓和语'honestly'和短语'For example',比6.5版本单纯的陈述更自然地引出了故事。

I think people usually reach out for help when they're facing something unfamiliar or a bit overwhelming. For example, last month my friend Thao was preparing for her very first job interview at a design agency in Hoi An, and she was honestly pretty anxious about it. She messaged me late one evening asking what kinds of questions to expect and how to present her portfolio, so I shared some practical tips and even did a mock interview with her over video call. I'd say moments like that, when the stakes feel high and people want a bit of reassurance, are the most common times to ask for help. Of course, sometimes it's just about needing a second opinion, but big transitions seem to bring it out the most.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI think people usually reach out for help when they're facing something unfamiliar or a bit overwhelming."Reach out for help" is a more natural collocation than the plain "ask for help" at 6.5. The 7.5 band uses an almost identical opening, showing this phrasing already performs well by 7.0.'Reach out for help'比6.5版本平实的'ask for help'是更自然的搭配。7.5分版本用了几乎一样的开头,说明这种表达在7.0分时就已经表现得很好了。
    • LRShe messaged me late one evening asking what kinds of questions to expect and how to present her portfolioClear and specific, but without naming the platform used. The 7.5 band adds "on Zalo", a concrete, locally specific detail that makes the story feel more grounded and authentic.清楚具体,但没有点明使用的平台。7.5分版本加入了'on Zalo',这是一个具体、有本地特色的细节,让故事显得更有根据、更真实。
    • GRAso I shared some practical tips and even did a mock interview with her over video callA cause-effect clause with "so", correct and fluent. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCShe messaged me on Zalo late one evening, asking for advice on what kinds of questions to expect and how to present her portfolio.Naming the specific app, "on Zalo", grounds the story in a concrete, locally recognisable detail. Neither lower band names the platform, leaving the story slightly more generic.点明具体的App名字'on Zalo',让故事有了一个具体、本地读者能一眼认出的细节。两个低分版本都没有点明平台,使故事显得更笼统一些。

Introduces the anecdote with a plain "For example", and closes on a single sentence combining both the reason and its consequence with "even though".用平实的'For example'引出了这个小故事,并以一句用'even though'结合原因与后果的句子收尾。

I'd say people who are quite independent or a bit self-conscious often avoid asking for help. Some feel uncomfortable admitting they don't know something, especially at work. For example, my colleague Quân is really talented but keeps problems to himself. Last month he was struggling with a tricky animation on a client project, but instead of asking for help, he spent several late nights trying to solve it alone. He eventually asked for feedback, almost as a last resort. I think for people like him, it's less about pride and more about not wanting to seem less capable, even though that can make things harder.

    • FCI'd say people who are quite independent or a bit self-conscious often avoid asking for help.A confident hedge opens the answer directly. All three bands actually share a near-identical opening here, showing this particular structure already works well even at 6.5, with the real differentiation appearing later in the story's detail and the closing sentence.一个自信的缓和语直接开启了整个回答。三个分数段其实在这里都用了几乎一样的开头,说明这种结构在6.5分时就已经表现得不错,真正的差异出现在后面故事的细节和结尾句上。
    • LRhe was struggling with a tricky animation on a client project"Animation" is accurate but generic. The 7.0 and 7.5 bands both specify "UI animation", a more precise, industry-specific term that makes the anecdote feel more authentic and detailed.'Animation'准确但笼统。7.0和7.5分版本都具体说明为'UI animation',这是一个更精确、更具行业特色的术语,让小故事显得更真实、更细致。
    • GRAI think for people like him, it's less about pride and more about not wanting to seem less capable, even though that can make things harder.A single sentence tacks a concessive "even though" clause onto the end, correct but slightly dense. Extends the opening with "maybe" as a softer hedge, and the anecdote gains a second precise detail, "UI animation", in place of the plainer "animation".在开头加入了更柔和的缓和语'maybe',小故事也多了一个精确细节'UI animation',取代了更平实的'animation'。

I'd say people who are quite independent or maybe a bit self-conscious often avoid asking others for help. Some just feel uncomfortable admitting they don't know something, especially in a work context. For example, one of my colleagues, Quân, is really talented but tends to keep problems to himself. Last month, he was struggling with a tricky UI animation on a client project, but instead of reaching out, he spent several late nights trying to solve it alone. Eventually, he did ask for feedback, almost as a last resort. I think for people like him, it's less about pride and more about not wanting to burden others or appear less capable, though that mindset can actually make things harder in the long run.

    • GRAthough that mindset can actually make things harder in the long runA concessive "though" clause is tacked onto the end of an already long sentence, correct but a little heavy. The 7.5 band gives the identical idea its own separate sentence instead, opened with "Of course", a lighter and more natural final beat.一个让步性的'though'从句附加在一个已经很长的句子末尾,正确但略显冗重。7.5分版本给相同的想法单独成句,以'Of course'开头,结尾更轻盈、更自然。
    • LRit's less about pride and more about not wanting to burden others or appear less capableA precise, well-balanced contrast between two possible motivations. The 7.5 band uses the identical phrase, showing this wording already performs at the ceiling of the range by 7.0, with the main 7.5 refinement being the punctuation and sentence division around it.在两种可能的动机之间做出了精确、平衡的对比。7.5分版本用了完全相同的短语,说明这种措辞在7.0分时就已经达到了这个分数段的上限,7.5分的主要改进在于周围的标点和分句方式。
    • FCEventually, he did ask for feedback, almost as a last resort. This short closing sentence resolves the anecdote with a plain time marker ('Eventually') rather than a more developed reflective wrap-up. A 6.5 answer would likely stop one sentence earlier without this resolution; a 7.5 answer might extend it into a broader observation. Here it gives the mini-story a clear, minimal ending, the kind of adequate but not elaborated coherence typical of Band 7.0.这个简短的结尾句用一个平实的时间标记词('Eventually')来结束这个小故事,而不是更充分的反思性总结。6.5分的回答很可能会在前一句就停下,没有这个收尾;7.5分的回答可能会把它扩展成更宏观的观察。在这里,它给这个小故事一个清晰、简洁的结尾,是Band 7.0典型的那种足够但未充分展开的连贯性。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCEventually, he did ask for feedback — almost as a last resort.A dash creates a more emphatic pause before the closing qualifier than the plainer comma used for the same sentence at 6.5 and 7.0. This small punctuation choice gives the final phrase a touch more weight.破折号在结尾的限定语之前制造了一个更有强调意味的停顿,比6.5和7.0版本同一句话中用的更平实的逗号更有力度。这个小小的标点选择让最后的短语多了一点分量。
    • GRAOf course, sometimes that can actually make things harder in the long run.A short, standalone closing sentence opened with "Of course" gives the final reflection its own beat. The 7.0 band instead folds the identical idea into the previous sentence with "though", a more compressed but less rhythmically varied ending.一个以'Of course'开头的简短独立结尾句,让最后的反思有了自己的节奏。7.0分版本则是用'though'把相同的想法并入前一句,结尾更压缩,但节奏变化较少。
    • LRnot wanting to burden others or appear less capableThis precise phrase already appears at 7.0 too, showing that particular piece of lexis performs well from 7.0 upward, with the 7.5 answer distinguishing itself mainly through the tighter, more varied sentence structure surrounding it rather than through new vocabulary here.这个精确的短语在7.0分版本中也已经出现了,说明这个词汇从7.0分起就表现良好,7.5分的回答主要是通过周围更紧凑、更多样的句子结构来体现区别,而不是靠这里的新词汇。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI think it's usually better to deal with your own issues first, at least a little, before trying to help others.A full sentence spells out the claim with "I think". The 7.5 band drops the framing verb entirely and opens on the bare fragment "Usually better, at least to some extent", trusting the listener to supply the missing subject and verb.一个完整的句子用'I think'明确表达了论断。7.5分版本完全省略了这个引导动词,直接以片段'Usually better, at least to some extent'开头,交由听者自己补上缺失的主语和动词。
    • LRI was also under a lot of pressure with a big project"A big project" is vague. The 7.5 band specifies "a big app redesign", a concrete, industry-specific detail folded into the same sentence as the colleague's burnout rather than given its own sentence.'A big project'比较模糊。7.5分版本具体说明为'a big app redesign',这是一个具体、有行业特色的细节,被并入了描述同事职业倦怠的同一句话中,而不是单独成句。
    • GRAI tried to support her by listening and giving advice, but I found it hard to be present because I hadn't managed my own stress yet.A single long sentence with one "but... because" chain, correct and clear. The 7.5 band folds this same content into an even longer sentence using a dash after the workload detail, then adds the hedge "honestly" mid-sentence, a more integrated structure.一个长句用'but... because'这一条链式结构,正确清楚。7.5分版本把相同的内容并入了一个更长的句子,在工作量细节之后用破折号,然后在句中加入缓和语'honestly',结构更加融合。

    为什么是这个分数

    • LRmy colleague An was struggling with burnout from juggling client deadlines and her personal life"Juggling client deadlines" is a precise, natural collocation for describing overlapping pressures. The 7.5 band keeps this same collocation but compresses "her personal life" to "her own life" within a tighter, dash-linked sentence.'Juggling client deadlines'是描述多重压力交叠时的一个精确、自然的搭配。7.5分版本保留了同样的搭配,但把'her personal life'压缩成'her own life',放进了一个更紧凑、用破折号连接的句子里。
    • GRAif I'd taken some time to sort out my own workload first, I could've given her much better supportA conditional sentence with "could've" and the intensifier "much", fluent and natural. The 7.5 band restates the same idea as a small paradox instead — "would have made me a better listener for her, not a worse one" — a more deliberately crafted closing structure.一个用'could've'和加强语'much'构成的条件句,流畅自然。7.5分版本则把相同的想法重新表达成一个小小的悖论——'would have made me a better listener for her, not a worse one'——是一种更用心打造的收尾结构。
    • FCI was also under a lot of pressure with a big redesign projectThe connector 'also' links this new piece of context back to the point just made about the colleague, keeping the discourse moving forward without a more varied linking device. A 6.5 answer might just start a new sentence with no explicit link; a 7.5 answer might use a more integrated construction. Here the plain additive link is enough to keep the story coherent, matching Band 7.0's adequate but simple cohesion.连接词'also'把这条新的背景信息和刚才关于同事的论点连接起来,让论述继续往前推进,但没有用更多样的连接方式。6.5分的回答可能只是另起一句,没有明确的连接;7.5分的回答可能会用更融合的结构。在这里,这个简单的叠加连接足以让故事保持连贯,符合Band 7.0那种够用但简单的连贯性。

Looking back, sorting my own workload out first would have made me a better listener for her, not a worse one. This kind of confident opening line is a recognisable higher-band habit.一个没有动词的片段开启了整个回答,比6.5和7.0版本完整的句子更紧凑。这种自信的开场方式是高分回答里一个可识别的习惯。
    • LRbeing in a slightly better place yourself tends to make you more useful to the people around you, not lessThe closing "not less" turns a simple claim into a small, deliberate paradox, a more crafted rhetorical move than the flatter closing claims at 6.5 and 7.0, which both simply state that being sorted "makes you more helpful".结尾的'not less'把一个简单的论断变成了一个小小的、刻意打造的悖论,比6.5和7.0版本更平淡的结尾论断——两者都只是简单地说打理好自己'makes you more helpful'——更用心的修辞手法。

This integration is a consistent stylistic feature across the 7.5 answers in this set.一个破折号把说话者自己的处境直接连进了描述帮助行动的同一句话,避免了6.5和7.0版本用的单独的'At the same time'句子。这种融合是这一组7.5分回答中一以贯之的风格特点。

Strong listening skills and empathy, mostly — it's not just about giving advice; sometimes people just want to be heard. Last March, my colleague Vy was really stressed about a challenging design project, and instead of jumping in with solutions, I asked her to walk me through her process and simply listened without interrupting. She told me afterwards that having someone genuinely listen made her feel less alone and, oddly, more capable of finding her own answers. Practical knowledge and problem-solving matter too, of course, but patience and genuine interest are what actually move the needle in moments like that.

    为什么是这个分数

    • GRAStrong listening skills and empathy, mostly — it's not just about giving advice; sometimes people just want to be heard.A dash and a semicolon together link three separate ideas into one sentence with no conjunction at all, more compact than the full framing sentence at 6.5 or the comma splice repeated at 7.0.破折号和分号一起把三个不同的想法连成了一句话,完全没有用连词,比6.5版本完整的引导句或7.0版本重复的逗号粘连更紧凑。
    • LRpatience and genuine interest are what actually move the needle in moments like that"Move the needle" is a genuinely idiomatic collocation for making a noticeable difference, well beyond the plain "make the biggest difference" used at 6.5 and 7.0 for the same closing claim.'Move the needle'是一个真正地道的、用来表达带来明显改变的搭配,远超6.5和7.0版本同一个收尾论断中用的平实的'make the biggest difference'。
    • FCShe told me afterwards that having someone genuinely listen made her feel less alone and, oddly, more capable of finding her own answersThe inserted aside "oddly" adds a small reflective, almost surprised note to the observation, a more developed piece of commentary than the flatter reporting used for the same moment at 6.5 and 7.0.插入的语气词'oddly'给这个观察增添了一丝反思性、近乎惊讶的意味,比6.5和7.0版本同一个时刻用的更平淡的陈述更有展开度的评论。

Yes, I think parents should definitely encourage their children to help others. It builds empathy and teaches them to be responsible members of their community. When I was about ten, my mum would take me along when she visited our elderly neighbour, Mrs Lan, in Hue. We'd bring her some food or help water her plants. I remember feeling a bit awkward at first, but over time it just became normal. Kids might grumble at first, but if parents set the example and explain why it matters, most children pick it up naturally.

    为什么是这个分数

    • LRWe'd bring her some food or help water her plants."Some food" is vague and generic. The 7.0 band specifies "homemade bánh bèo", a concrete, locally specific dish, and 7.5 keeps the same dish but drops the connective "We'd bring her" for a leaner colon-led list instead.'Some food'模糊笼统。7.0分版本具体说明为'homemade bánh bèo',这是一道具体、有本地特色的菜肴,7.5分版本保留了同样的菜肴,但去掉了连接词'We'd bring her',改用更精简、由冒号引出的列举。
    • GRAIt builds empathy and teaches them to be responsible members of their community.A single coordinated sentence with "and", correct and clear. The 7.0 band expands this into "not only... but also", and the 7.5 band instead compresses the whole claim into a four-word dash-led opener, "and it works best through doing rather than telling", a more economical structure than either.一个用'and'并列的句子,正确清楚。7.0分版本把它扩展成'not only... but also',7.5分版本则把整个论断压缩成一个四个词、由破折号引出的开场白'and it works best through doing rather than telling',比前两者都更精简。
    • FCKids might grumble at first, but if parents set the example and explain why it matters, most children pick it up naturally.A single long sentence with "but if... most", correct and reasonably fluent. The 7.5 band achieves a similar closing idea but splits it with a dash-set aside ("that's normal enough") and ends on the separate, reflective sentence "Empathy learned this way tends to stick", a more developed close.一个用'but if... most'构成的长句,正确、相当流畅。7.5分版本达成了类似的收尾想法,但用破折号插入语('that's normal enough')把它拆开,并以独立的反思性句子'Empathy learned this way tends to stick'收尾,收尾更充分。

    为什么是这个分数

    • LRWe'd bring her some homemade bánh bèo or help water her plants."Homemade bánh bèo" is a precise, culturally specific detail that grounds the anecdote in a real place and custom. The 6.5 band uses only the generic "some food" for the identical moment in the story.'Homemade bánh bèo'是一个精确、有文化特色的细节,让这个小故事扎根在一个真实的地方和习俗中。6.5分版本在故事中相同的时刻只用了笼统的'some food'。
    • GRAIt not only builds empathy, but also teaches them how to be responsible members of their community. The correlative "not only... but also" structure is more explicit than the simple "and" used for the same idea at 6.5. The 7.5 band drops this correlative structure entirely in favour of a compact dash-led thesis, showing that at the top band, compression can replace explicit signalling.关联结构'not only... but also'比6.5版本表达同一想法时用的简单的'and'更明确。7.5分版本完全放弃了这种关联结构,改用一个由破折号引出的紧凑论点,说明在最高分段,凝练可以取代明确的标示。
    • FCOf course, kids might grumble or feel shy at first, but if parents set the example and explain why it matters, most children pick it up naturally."Of course" opens the concession, and "grumble or feel shy" gives two possible reactions. The 7.5 band reworks this same concession with a dash-set aside instead of "Of course", and adds a further reflective closing sentence this version doesn't include.'Of course'开启了这个让步,'grumble or feel shy'给出了两种可能的反应。7.5分版本用破折号插入语代替了'Of course'来重新表达同样的让步,并加入了一句这个版本没有的反思性结尾句。

Yes — and it works best through doing rather than telling. When I was about ten, my mother used to take me along on her visits to our elderly neighbour, Mrs Lan, in Hue: homemade bánh bèo, watering the plants, sitting and listening to her talk. I felt a bit awkward about it at first, but it simply became part of how our family lived. Kids will grumble or feel shy to begin with — that's normal enough — but if parents lead by example rather than just explaining, most children absorb it without ever being formally taught. Empathy learned this way tends to stick.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCYes — and it works best through doing rather than telling.A dash-led opening states the whole method as a compact thesis before any story is told, more confident and economical than the fuller opening sentences at 6.5 and 7.0. This kind of upfront framing lets the anecdote that follows read as illustration rather than build-up.一个由破折号引出的开头,在还没讲故事之前就把整个方法陈述成一个紧凑的论点,比6.5和7.0版本更完整的开头句更自信、更精炼。这种开门见山的表述方式,让接下来的小故事读起来像是举例说明,而不是铺垫。
    • GRAKids will grumble or feel shy to begin with — that's normal enoughA dash sets off a short evaluative aside within the sentence, a more flexible structure than the "Of course" opener used for the equivalent concession at 7.0 or the plain "but" at 6.5. This lets the concession and its evaluation sit in the same breath.一个破折号在句子中隔开了一个简短的评价性插入语,比7.0版本相应让步用的'Of course'开头或6.5版本平实的'but'更灵活。这让让步和对它的评价能在同一句话里呈现。
    • LREmpathy learned this way tends to stick.A short, reflective closing sentence with the precise verb "stick", used idiomatically to mean "last" or "be retained". Neither lower band attempts a closing line like this; both end on the more literal claim that children "pick it up naturally".一个简短、反思性的结尾句,用了精确的动词'stick',在这里是地道用法,意思是'持久'或'被留存下来'。两个低分版本都没有尝试这样的结尾句;两者都以更字面化的论断——孩子们'pick it up naturally'——收尾。

    为什么是这个分数

    • GRAHonestly, teachers, coaches, or even neighbors can model these habits, sometimes in ways that parents can't, so it's definitely a shared responsibility across the community.A long sentence chains the closing claim, an added clause, and the conclusion together with commas and "so", ambitious but slightly dense for 7.0. The 7.5 band splits this into two sentences, moving "So, it's definitely a shared responsibility" onto its own line for a cleaner, more emphatic finish.一个长句用逗号和'so'把结尾的论断、一个附加从句和结论串联在一起,对7.0分来说有野心但略显密集。7.5分版本把它拆成了两句话,把'So, it's definitely a shared responsibility'单独放成一行,收尾更干净、更有力。
    • LRShe gave us guidance on how to actually approach people and listen to what they needed, not just donate things blindly."Gave us guidance on" is a precise, slightly formal phrase. The 7.5 band retains this exact wording, showing it already performs at the ceiling of the range by 7.0.'Gave us guidance on'是一个精确、略微正式的短语。7.5分版本保留了完全相同的措辞,说明它在7.0分时就已经达到了这个分数段的上限。
    • FCFor instance, when I was in secondary school in Hue, our literature teacher, Ms. Chi, organized a class project"For instance" signals the shift to the anecdote more explicitly than the bare "When" used at 6.5. The 7.5 band keeps this identical transition, showing it already reads naturally by 7.0.'For instance'比6.5版本单纯的'When'更明确地标示出转向小故事的部分。7.5分版本保留了完全相同的过渡,说明它在7.0分时读起来就已经很自然了。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCHonestly, teachers, coaches, or even neighbors can model these habits, sometimes in ways that parents can't.This sentence is shared with the 7.0 band up to this point, but the 7.5 version then breaks off into a new sentence rather than continuing with "so", giving the final claim more room to land on its own.这句话到这里为止都和7.0版本一样,但7.5版本接下来另起一句,而不是用'so'继续下去,让最后的论断有更多的独立空间。
    • GRASo, it's definitely a shared responsibility across the community.A short, standalone closing sentence follows the longer one before it, rather than being chained on with "so" inside the same sentence as at 7.0. This deliberate sentence break is the clearest structural distinction between the two versions of this closing point.一个简短、独立的结尾句跟在前面较长的句子之后,而不是像7.0版本那样用'so'串联在同一句话里。这种有意的断句是这一收尾要点两个版本之间最明显的结构区别。

    为什么是这个分数

    • GRAa bit embarrassed to ask, she was still waiting in the hallway when I came back from a run along My Khe Beach and noticed herA dash lets the description of Mrs Huong's embarrassment sit alongside the main action in one flowing clause, more integrated than the separate "She was a bit embarrassed to ask for help, but..." sentence used at 6.5 and 7.0.一个破折号让对香阿姨不好意思情绪的描述,与主要动作在同一个流畅的从句中并存,比6.5和7.0版本用的单独的'She was a bit embarrassed to ask for help, but...'句子更融合。

    • FCit cost me nothing, but she was visibly relievedThe contrastive 'but' pivots from the speaker's own low cost to the neighbour's emotional payoff, closing the anecdote on the other person's reaction rather than the speaker's. A 6.5 or 7.0 answer would more likely end flatly on the speaker's own feeling. This small perspective shift right at the end is the kind of developed, listener-aware closing move that Band 7.5 rewards.对比性的'but'把话题从说话者自己付出的很小的代价,转向了邻居在情感上的回报,让这个小故事以对方的反应而不是说话者自己的感受收尾。6.5或7.0分的回答更可能平淡地以说话者自己的感受结束。这种在结尾处的小小视角转换,正是Band 7.5看重的那种有发展、有听者意识的收尾方式。

Uses the plain verb "help each other", and closes the everyday-help sentence with a single example, "receiving packages".使用了平实的动词'help each other',并以单一的例子'receiving packages'结束了关于日常帮忙的句子。

I think neighbours usually help each other during emergencies or when someone has a sudden problem. Just last month, my neighbour Mr Quoc, who lives two doors down, had his motorbike break down right before an important job interview. He was pretty stressed and didn't know what to do, so I offered to let him borrow mine for the day. It was a simple thing for me, but he really appreciated it and kept thanking me later. Most people in my building are friendly but keep to themselves, so these moments of support stand out. In day-to-day life, people also help with small things like receiving packages, but emergencies really bring out that spirit.

    • FCI think neighbours usually help each other during emergencies or when someone has a sudden problem.A full framing sentence states the claim before any story. The 7.5 band drops "I think" and the full clause entirely, opening instead on the bare fragment "Mostly during emergencies", a tighter, more confident structure.一个完整的引导句在讲故事之前先陈述了论断。7.5分版本完全去掉了'I think'和整个从句,改以裸露的片段'Mostly during emergencies'开头,结构更紧凑、更自信。
    • GRAIn day-to-day life, people also help with small things like receiving packages, but emergencies really bring out that spirit.A single example, "receiving packages", supports the point about everyday help. The 7.5 band extends this to a two-item list set off by commas rather than "or" — "a parcel taken in, a plant watered" — a more rhythmic, list-like structure.一个单独的例子'receiving packages'支撑了关于日常帮助的观点。7.5分版本把它扩展成了一个用逗号而不是'or'隔开的两项列表——'a parcel taken in, a plant watered'——结构更有节奏感、更像列表。
    • LRMost people in my building are friendly but keep to themselves, so these moments of support stand out.Plain, functional phrasing for the concluding observation. The 7.5 band tightens this to "friendly enough but keep to themselves, which is exactly why", a slightly more precise and emphatic way of making the same point.对这个总结性观察用了平实、功能性的表达。7.5分版本把它收紧成'friendly enough but keep to themselves, which is exactly why',用略微更精确、更有力的方式表达了同一个观点。

Upgrades "help each other" to "step in to help each other", a more vivid phrasal verb, and extends the everyday-help list to two examples, "receiving packages or watering plants".把'help each other'升级成了更生动的短语动词'step in to help each other',并把日常帮助的列举扩展成了两个例子——'receiving packages or watering plants'。

I think neighbors usually step in to help each other during emergencies or when someone is dealing with a sudden problem. For example, just last month, I remember my neighbor Mr. Quoc, who lives two doors down from me, had his motorbike break down right before an important job interview. He was pretty stressed and didn't know what to do, so I offered to let him borrow mine for the day. It was a simple thing for me, but he really appreciated it and kept thanking me later. To be fair, most people in my building are friendly but keep to themselves, so these moments of support stand out. Of course, in day-to-day life, people also help with things like receiving packages or watering plants, but emergencies really bring out that spirit.

    • LRI think neighbors usually step in to help each other during emergencies or when someone is dealing with a sudden problem."Step in to help" is a precise, natural phrasal verb, a clear upgrade on the plain "help each other" at 6.5. The 7.5 band drops the phrasal verb and the framing sentence altogether, opening instead on a bare comparative fragment.'Step in to help'是一个精确、自然的短语动词,明显是对6.5版本平实的'help each other'的升级。7.5分版本完全去掉了这个短语动词和引导句,改以一个裸露的比较性片段开头。
    • GRAOf course, in day-to-day life, people also help with things like receiving packages or watering plants, but emergencies really bring out that spirit.A two-item list, "receiving packages or watering plants", joined by "or", gives fuller support than the single example at 6.5. The 7.5 band uses a similar two-item list but joins the items with a comma instead of "or", a subtly different rhythm for the same content.一个用'or'连接的两项列表'receiving packages or watering plants',比6.5版本单一的例子提供了更充分的支撑。7.5分版本用了类似的两项列表,但用逗号而不是'or'连接,节奏略有不同。
    • FCTo be fair, most people in my building are friendly but keep to themselves, so these moments of support stand out."To be fair" softens the generalisation, a natural spoken hedge absent from the direct 6.5 version. The 7.5 band removes the hedge and instead adds a relative clause, "which is exactly why moments like that stand out", a more integrated way of stating the same conclusion.'To be fair'柔化了这个概括性的说法,是一个6.5版本直接表达中没有的自然口语缓和语。7.5分版本去掉了这个缓和语,改用一个定语从句'which is exactly why moments like that stand out',用更融合的方式陈述了同样的结论。

Drops the framing sentence for a bare "Mostly during emergencies", and closes with the idiomatic "what a neighbourhood is made of" instead of a plain restatement.省略了引导句,直接用裸露的'Mostly during emergencies'开头,并以地道的'what a neighbourhood is made of'收尾,而不是平实的重述。

Mostly during emergencies, or whenever someone hits a problem they can't fix alone. Just last month my neighbour Mr Quoc, two doors down, had his motorbike break down right before an important job interview — stressed and out of options, so I lent him mine for the day. It cost me nothing, but he thanked me for weeks afterwards. Most people in my building are friendly enough but keep to themselves, which is exactly why moments like that stand out. Day-to-day life runs on smaller favours too, a parcel taken in, a plant watered, but it's the emergencies that really show what a neighbourhood is made of.

    • FCMostly during emergencies, or whenever someone hits a problem they can't fix alone.A verbless fragment opens the whole answer, more compact than the full sentences at 6.5 and 7.0. This kind of confident, economical opening line is a recognisable higher-band habit.一个没有动词的片段开启了整个回答,比6.5和7.0版本完整的句子更紧凑。这种自信、精炼的开场方式是高分回答里一个可识别的习惯。
    • LRwhat a neighbourhood is made ofAn idiomatic closing phrase that neither lower band reaches for; both end on the more literal claim that emergencies "bring out that spirit". This kind of compact, evaluative image is characteristic of the top band's closing lines.一个两个低分版本都没有触及的地道收尾短语;两者都以更字面化的论断——紧急情况'bring out that spirit'——收尾。这种紧凑、评价性的意象是最高分段结尾句的特色。
    • GRAstressed and out of options, so I lent him mine for the dayA dash lets the description of Mr Quoc's state feed directly into the main action with no separate sentence, tighter than the two full sentences ("He was pretty stressed and didn't know what to do, so I offered...") used at 6.5 and 7.0 for the same content.一个破折号让对国先生状态的描述,直接引入主要动作,不需要单独成句,比6.5和7.0版本用的两个完整句子('He was pretty stressed and didn't know what to do, so I offered...')表达同样内容更紧凑。
