6.5 分

The 6.5 answer states its dislike directly and plainly ('I dislike this rule because design work isn't like that') with simple, comma-linked sentences describing the daily inconvenience.6.5分的答案直接、朴素地表达不满(如'我不喜欢这条规定,因为设计工作不是那样的'),用简单的逗号连接句描述日常的不便。

The rule I would like to change is at my studio: everyone must clock in by eight o'clock every morning, even though we're a creative company and don't really need fixed hours.

I think the reason for the rule is simply that our manager, Mai, wants to make sure everyone is working the same hours and nobody is being lazy. It probably also makes it easier to organise meetings if everyone arrives around the same time.

I dislike this rule because design work isn't like that. Some mornings I have good ideas early, other mornings I work much better late at night, but I still have to be at my desk by eight, tired and not really productive until later. I also live quite close to the river, and the roads are terrible at eight o'clock, so I waste time sitting in traffic for no real reason.

I would like to change the rule so that we just need to complete eight hours sometime between six in the morning and eight at night, rather than starting at a fixed time. I think people would actually work better and feel less tired. I've mentioned this to Mai a few times, but nothing has changed yet.

  • FCI dislike this rule because design work isn't like that. The reason is stated in one plain because-clause and then left to stand on its own, with no example or elaboration folded into the same sentence — a single, direct assertion is exactly the "one clear reason is enough" level of development Band 6.5 asks for. A 7.0 answer would typically follow this same reason immediately with a concrete instance (the way this speaker later does with the traffic complaint); here the reason is stated but not yet illustrated, which keeps the sentence plain rather than developed.
  • LRI waste time sitting in traffic for no real reason."Waste time" is about as basic as this idea can be phrased — a high-frequency verb plus a high-frequency noun, with no more vivid alternative like "stuck in gridlock" or "crawl through traffic" attempted. That's squarely Band 6.5 Lexical Resource: everyday words used clearly, with no reach for a livelier synonym even though the traffic complaint is a natural moment for one. It still communicates the frustration perfectly well, which is the point — plain doesn't mean unclear, just unambitious.“Waste time”是这个意思能被表达得最基本的方式了——一个高频动词加一个高频名词,完全没有尝试用更生动的说法,比如“stuck in gridlock”或“crawl through traffic”。这正是典型的 Band 6.5 Lexical Resource:日常词汇用得清楚明白,即便抱怨堵车本是一个用上更生动同义词的自然契机,却没有伸手去够。它依然把那种烦躁表达得完全清楚,而这正是关键所在——朴素不等于不清楚,只是不够有野心。
  • GRASome mornings I have good ideas early, other mornings I work much better late at night, but I still have to be at my desk by eight, tired and not really productive until later. The sentence is long, but its length comes from stringing clauses together with commas and "but" rather than from real subordination — "some mornings... other mornings... but I still have to..." is coordination stretched out, not embedding. That's the Band 6.5 grammar profile: accurate and fluent at sentence length, but structurally simple underneath. A 7.0 version would likely convert one of these comma-joined clauses into a true subordinate clause with "although" or a relative pronoun instead of relying on "but" to carry the whole contrast.这句话很长,但它的长度来自用逗号和“but”把各个分句串在一起,而不是来自真正的从属结构——“some mornings... other mornings... but I still have to...”是被拉长的并列,而不是嵌套。这正是 Band 6.5 的语法特征:句子长度上显得流畅、准确,但底层结构其实简单。Band 7.0 的版本很可能会把其中一个用逗号连接的分句改成用“although”或关系代词引导的真正从属句,而不是单靠“but”来承载整个对比。
7.0 分

The 7.0 answer uses a natural collocation ('bouncing ideas off my colleagues') and grounds its complaint in one specific example (the logo project deadline), matching the Band 7.0 target of reason plus concrete example.7.0分的答案使用了一个自然搭配('跟同事互相碰撞想法'),并用一个具体例子(logo项目的截止日期)来支撑自己的抱怨,符合7.0分'理由加具体例子'的目标模式。

The rule I'd like to change is at my studio: nobody's allowed to work from home more than one day a week, no matter what they're working on or how the project is going.

The reason for the rule, as far as I understand it, is that the manager wants everyone available for quick meetings and wants to keep a proper team atmosphere in the office. I can see why that matters for some kinds of work, especially when people are new and still learning how things run.

I dislike the rule mainly because design work isn't always something that needs a room full of people. Some days I need to be in the office bouncing ideas off my colleagues, but other days I just need several hours of quiet concentration, which is honestly much easier to get at home than in an open-plan office full of phone calls and conversations. Last month I had a tight deadline for a logo project, and I ended up getting far more done in one afternoon working from my apartment than I had in the entire previous week at my desk, constantly being interrupted.

How I'd like to change it is fairly simple. Instead of a fixed limit of one day, I think people should be allowed two or three days at home as long as their work is finished on time and they show up for anything important, like client meetings. I've brought this up with my manager once already, and although nothing's changed yet, she didn't dismiss the idea completely, so I'm hoping to bring it up again properly soon.

  • LRbouncing ideas off my colleagues"Bounce ideas off" is a genuine workplace collocation — a fixed phrasal pairing with "off" that a learner has to have absorbed rather than built from rules — and it's used here with total naturalness alongside plain vocabulary elsewhere. That's exactly the Band 7.0 target: mostly common words with one flexible collocation dropped in, not a whole paragraph of idiom. A 6.5 answer would more likely say "talking to my colleagues about my ideas", which is accurate but flatter."Bounce ideas off" 是一个真正的职场固定搭配——一个必须靠积累习得、而非凭规则构造出来的与 "off" 搭配的固定组合——在这里与其他地方平实的词汇并置使用,显得十分自然。这正是7.0分的目标:大部分是常见词汇,穿插一个灵活的搭配,而不是通篇的习语。6.5分的答案更可能说 "talking to my colleagues about my ideas",虽然准确,但显得更平淡。
  • FCLast month I had a tight deadline for a logo project, and I ended up getting far more done in one afternoon working from my apartment than I had in the entire previous week at my desk, constantly being interrupted. The general complaint about needing quiet concentration is immediately backed by one dated, concrete anecdote — a specific project (a logo), a specific outcome (one productive afternoon beating a whole distracted week) — which is the reason-plus-example pattern Band 7.0 Fluency & Coherence is built around. A 6.5 answer might leave the complaint at the general level without a dated example; a 7.5 answer would likely add a further reflective comment on top of the anecdote, which this answer doesn't quite do.
  • GRAInstead of a fixed limit of one day, I think people should be allowed two or three days at home as long as their work is finished on time and they show up for anything important, like client meetings. This single sentence stacks three devices — a fronted contrastive phrase ("Instead of a fixed limit of one day"), a conditional-style "as long as" clause, and an exemplifying tag ("like client meetings") — and keeps them all accurate and easy to follow, which is what "comfortable" complexity looks like at Band 7.0. A 6.5 answer would likely break this into two or three shorter sentences rather than risk stacking that many clauses in one breath. The structure mirrors the content well too: one proposal, one condition attached to it, one example of what the condition means in practice.这一个句子叠加了三种手法——一个前置的对比短语("Instead of a fixed limit of one day")、一个类似条件句的 "as long as" 分句,以及一个举例标签("like client meetings")——并让它们全部保持准确、易于理解,这正是7.0分"从容"复杂度的样貌。6.5分的答案很可能会把这拆成两三个更短的句子,而不敢在一口气里叠加这么多分句。这一结构也很好地映照了内容本身:一个提议、一个附加的条件、一个说明该条件在实践中意味着什么的例子。
7.5 分

The 7.5 answer reaches for an idiomatic image ('a game of telephone') and a balanced, verbless closing line ('One rule for money, a different rule for meaning.'), both markers of more sophisticated Band 7.5 control.7.5分的答案用了一个习语式的形象说法('传话游戏'),并以一句结构对称、没有动词的收尾句('一条规矩管钱,另一条规矩管意义。')作结,两者都体现出7.5分更为精妙的语言掌控力。

The rule I'd like to change is one at my studio: designers are not allowed to talk to clients directly. Every question, every piece of feedback, every 'can you make the logo bigger' has to pass through the account manager, in both directions. I can sit in a meeting with a client, but I'm not supposed to email them afterwards, and if they message me, I forward it.

The reason for the rule is not stupid, which is the annoying part. The studio's founders wanted one consistent voice toward each client, and they wanted to protect designers from being pulled into endless small requests at eleven at night. There's also a commercial logic: the account manager knows what's in the contract and what's extra, and a designer who agrees to 'just one more version' has given away money.

Why I dislike it is that design is mostly a conversation, and the rule turns it into a game of telephone. Last spring a client said something to our account manager that reached me as 'make it pop'. I spent a week making it pop. When I finally sat in a room with the client, it turned out she meant the text was too small for her mother to read, and I'd have understood that in one sentence from her face. The rule also treats designers as slightly dangerous, as if we can't be trusted to say no, which is both untrue and bad for how we feel about the work.

How I'd change it is not by abolishing it. I'd keep the account manager as the owner of the relationship and the contract, but let the designer join every feedback call and reply to design questions directly, copying the manager in. One rule for money, a different rule for meaning. I've proposed it twice. The second time, they said they'd think about it, which in this studio is a kind of progress.

  • LRa game of telephone"A game of telephone" borrows the children's game where a message gets garbled as it passes person to person, turned into a precise metaphor for what happens to design feedback once it's filtered through an account manager. This is the idiomatic, figurative use of language Band 7.5 Lexical Resource rewards — a lower-band answer would more likely say something literal like "the information gets confused", accurate but losing the vivid, shared image. It also lands at exactly the moment the speaker needs to justify disliking the rule, so the metaphor is doing argumentative work, not just decoration."A game of telephone" 借用了那个孩子们玩的游戏——一条信息在人与人之间传递时会被逐渐扭曲——把它变成了一个精准的比喻,来形容设计反馈一旦经过客户经理层层过滤后会发生什么。这正是7.5分"词汇资源"所看重的习语化、比喻性语言运用——分数较低的答案很可能会用类似 "the information gets confused" 这样字面化的说法,虽然准确,却失去了那种生动、共通的画面感。而且它恰好出现在说话者需要为自己不喜欢这条规则辩护的那个节点上,所以这个比喻是在承担论证的功能,而不只是装饰。
  • GRAOne rule for money, a different rule for meaning."One rule for money, a different rule for meaning" drops the verb entirely — a deliberate ellipsis that turns a proposal into an aphorism, the kind of confident, verbless sentence a writer only risks once they're sure the rhythm will land. Band 7.5 grammar is usually illustrated with cleft sentences or relative clauses, but this is a different, equally advanced move: withholding grammar for rhetorical punch, something a 6.5 or 7.0 writer would typically avoid for fear the sentence reads as incomplete. It also compresses the whole preceding compromise proposal into six words, a lot of coherence packed into very little grammar."One rule for money, a different rule for meaning" 完全省去了动词——这是一种刻意的省略,把一个提议变成了一句格言,一种只有在确信节奏能够立住时,作者才敢冒险使用的、自信的无动词句子。7.5分的语法通常用分裂句或关系从句来举例说明,但这是另一种同样高阶的手法:为了修辞效果而刻意省略语法,这是6.5或7.0分的写作者通常会因担心句子显得不完整而回避的做法。它同时也把前文整个妥协提议压缩进短短六个词里,以极少的语法承载了大量的连贯性。
  • FCThe second time, they said they'd think about it, which in this studio is a kind of progress. The relative clause "which in this studio is a kind of progress" doesn't just report what happened — it reframes it, layering a wry, almost cynical evaluation over a literally hopeful-sounding fact ("they said they'd think about it"). That double attitude, hope and mild scepticism held at once, is a more demanding form of the "one reflective point" Band 7.5 asks for than straightforward reflection, since the reader has to catch the irony rather than have it spelled out. A 7.0 closing would more likely state the outcome and a single plain feeling about it, without this layer of self-aware scepticism.关系从句 "which in this studio is a kind of progress" 不只是转述发生了什么——它重新定义了这件事,在一个字面上听起来充满希望的事实("they said they'd think about it")之上,覆盖了一层俏皮、近乎讥诮的评价。这种希望与轻微怀疑并存的双重态度,比直白的反思更能体现7.5分所要求的"一个反思点",因为读者必须自己领会其中的讽刺意味,而不是被明确点明。7.0分的收尾更可能只是陈述结果和一种简单的感受,而不带这种自省式的怀疑色彩。

Gives the position in one plain sentence and lists the exceptions with simple connectors like 'also' and 'but'.用一句平实的话给出立场,并用 'also' 和 'but' 这样简单的连接词列举例外情况。

Not always, but there are not many exceptions. Last year, a driver near my house rode his motorbike on the pavement to get a neighbour's injured child to hospital fast, and nobody I know thinks he did something wrong. A law can be broken if following it would cause much more harm. Some laws are also unfair, and people are sometimes right to break them. But most law-breaking is not heroic — it is just convenient, like riding on the pavement to save two minutes. The reason behind the act matters more than the act itself.

    • FCNot always, but there are not many exceptions. This short opening states the balanced position directly, which is clear but a little abrupt. The 7.0 band softens it with 'to be honest', and 7.5 keeps almost the same words but the surrounding sentence flows into the example more smoothly.这个简短的开头直接陈述了一个平衡的立场,清楚但略显突兀。7.0分段用 'to be honest' 软化了它,而7.5虽然用词几乎一样,但周围的句子能更流畅地过渡到例子里。
    • LRit is just convenientThis is plain, everyday vocabulary for describing minor law-breaking. The higher bands keep the same word but place it inside a longer, more fluent contrast, as in 7.5's 'it's simply convenient, and the driver who cuts across the pavement...'.这是描述轻微违法行为的平实、日常词汇。更高分段保留了同一个词,但把它放进了一个更长、更流畅的对比句里,比如7.5中的 'it's simply convenient, and the driver who cuts across the pavement...'。
    • GRAA law can be broken if following it would cause much more harm. This is a short, simple conditional sentence. The 7.5 version instead uses a dash to attach the same idea directly onto the example sentence, creating one longer, more integrated structure.这是一个简短、简单的条件句。7.5版本则用破折号把同样的想法直接接到例子句上,形成一个更长、更融合的结构。

Adds the hedge 'to be honest' and folds the exception directly into the example sentence using a dash rather than a separate sentence.加上了缓和语 'to be honest',并用破折号把例外情况直接融入了例子句,而不是另起一句。

Not always, to be honest, though the exceptions are narrower than people like to think. Last year a driver on my street rode his motorbike the wrong way down a pavement to get an injured child to hospital, and nobody I know thinks he did anything wrong — a law can reasonably be broken when following it would clearly cause more harm. Unjust laws are another case; there are plenty of people in history who were right to disobey them. But I'd say most law-breaking isn't heroic at all, it's simply convenient, and someone riding on the pavement to save two minutes looks identical to someone saving a child. It's the reason that really matters, not the act.

    • FCthough the exceptions are narrower than people like to thinkThis clause, added onto the opening sentence, gives an extra layer of nuance the plainer 6.5 opening lacks. It's close to the 7.5 phrasing, though 7.5 removes the hedge entirely and states the same idea as a flat, confident fact.这个加在开头句上的分句,增添了一层6.5更平实的开头所缺少的细腻感。它和7.5的措辞接近,不过7.5完全去掉了缓和语,把同样的想法当作一个平铺直叙、自信的事实来陈述。
    • LRUnjust laws are another case; there are plenty of people in history who were right to disobey them.'Unjust laws' and 'disobey' are more precise, slightly formal terms than the plainer 'unfair' and 'break' used at 6.5. The 7.5 band uses very similar vocabulary here, showing the two top bands often converge on lexis but differ in sentence architecture.'Unjust laws' 和 'disobey' 是比6.5中更平实的 'unfair' 和 'break' 更精确、略微更正式的词汇。7.5分段在这里用了非常相似的词汇,说明这两个最高分段经常在用词上趋同,但在句子结构上有所不同。
    • GRAand nobody I know thinks he did anything wrong — a law can reasonably be broken when following it would clearly cause more harmThe dash here attaches the general principle directly onto the specific example within one sentence, more ambitious than the separate sentences at 6.5. It's very close to the 7.5 structure, though 7.5 extends the sentence even further with an added clause about the bleeding child.这里的破折号在一个句子里把普遍原则直接接到了具体例子上,比6.5中独立的句子更有野心。它和7.5的结构非常接近,不过7.5又通过加上关于“受伤流血的孩子”这个分句,把句子延伸得更远。

Unjust laws are another matter entirely; history is full of people who were right to disobey them. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCthough the exceptions are narrower than people like to imagineDropping any hedge and stating this qualification as a plain fact, right inside the opening sentence, is more confident than the hedge-heavy openings at 6.5 and 7.0. It signals the whole answer's shape before any example is even given.不加任何缓和语,直接在开头句里把这个限定条件当作一个平实的事实来陈述,比6.5和7.0中缓和语堆砌的开头更自信。它在给出任何例子之前,就先标示出了整个回答的走向。
    • LRshave two minutes off his journey'Shave two minutes off' is a more idiomatic, economical phrase than the plainer 'save two minutes' used at 6.5 and 7.0. This kind of small figurative upgrade across the answer is typical of what lifts it into the top band.'Shave two minutes off' 是一个比6.5和7.0中更平实的 'save two minutes' 更地道、更简洁的短语。这种贯穿全文的小小比喻性升级,正是把回答推向最高分段的典型特征。
    • GRAThe act looks identical from the outside; the reason behind it is everything. This closing pair of short balanced clauses, joined by a semicolon, is a deliberately crafted final flourish that neither lower band attempts in this compact a form — both end on a fuller, more explanatory sentence instead. The compression itself signals control.这对由分号连接的、简短平衡的结尾分句,是一种刻意打造的收尾点缀,两个较低分段都没有以这么紧凑的形式尝试过——它们都以一个更完整、更具解释性的句子收尾。这种压缩感本身就是掌控力的体现。

That's one purpose, and I think it's the best test of a good law. My grandmother kept her flat when a new landlord tried to push her out, because a tenancy law existed and someone helped her use it. That's the law doing what it should — protecting a weak person from a stronger one. But the law also keeps order and makes agreements work, and it punishes harm too. Honestly, some laws protect powerful people more, because they write the rules. I'd say the main purpose is to make life predictable.

    • FCThat's one purpose, and I think it's the best test of a good law. This opening states the whole judgement in one plain sentence. The 7.0 band adds 'honestly' for a more conversational tone, and 7.5 extends the same idea into a longer sentence with 'to my mind', showing a wider range of ways to open a nuanced opinion.这个开头用一句平实的话陈述了整个判断。7.0分段加了 'honestly' 让语气更有对话感,7.5则用 'to my mind' 把同样的想法延伸成了一个更长的句子,展现出开启一个细腻观点的更多方式。
    • LRprotecting a weak person from a stronger oneThis is plain, direct phrasing. The higher bands keep almost the same words but embed them inside a longer, more fluent sentence built around a dash, as in 'standing between a strong party and a weak one', a slightly more formal collocation.这是平实、直接的措辞。更高分段保留了几乎相同的用词,但把它们嵌入了一个围绕破折号构建的、更长、更流畅的句子里,比如 'standing between a strong party and a weak one',是一个略微更正式的搭配。

Adds 'honestly I'd say' before the main claim and uses a dash to attach the evaluative point directly onto the grandmother's story.在主要论断前加上了 'honestly I'd say',并用破折号把带评价色彩的观点直接接到了奶奶的故事上。

That's one of its purposes, and honestly I'd say it's the most important test of whether a law is working. My grandmother kept her flat when a new landlord tried to push her out, simply because a tenancy law existed and someone helped her use it — that's the law standing between a strong party and a weak one, exactly as it should. But the law also exists to keep order, to make agreements enforceable so people can do business, and to punish harm. And to be fair, a lot of law actually protects the powerful, since they have most influence over writing it. I'd say the main purpose is to make life predictable.

    • FChonestly I'd say it's the most important test of whether a law is workingThe hedge 'honestly I'd say' frames this as a considered personal judgement, more natural than the flatter '6.5' claim. It's close to the 7.5 phrasing 'to my mind the most important test of whether it's working', which is slightly more compact.缓和语 'honestly I'd say' 把这句话框定成了一个经过深思熟虑的个人判断,比6.5更平淡的论断更自然。它和7.5的措辞 'to my mind the most important test of whether it's working' 接近,后者略微更紧凑。
    • LRstanding between a strong party and a weak oneThis is a more precise, image-based phrase than the plainer 'protecting a weak person from a stronger one' at 6.5. It is shared almost word for word with the 7.5 version, showing the two top bands converge here in vocabulary.这是一个比6.5中更平实的 'protecting a weak person from a stronger one' 更精确、更有画面感的短语。它和7.5版本几乎逐字相同,说明这两个最高分段在这里的词汇上趋同了。
    • GRAthat's the law standing between a strong party and a weak one, exactly as it shouldThe dash attaches this evaluative clause directly onto the grandmother's story within one sentence, more integrated than the separate sentence used at 6.5. It's close to the 7.5 structure, though 7.5 goes on to link a further semicolon clause onto the same sentence.破折号在一个句子里把这个带评价色彩的分句直接接到了奶奶的故事上,比6.5中独立的句子更融合。它和7.5的结构接近,不过7.5又在同一个句子上接了一个用分号连接的分句。

That's one of its purposes, and to my mind the most important test of whether it's working. My grandmother kept her flat when a new landlord tried to push her out because a tenancy law existed and someone helped her use it — that's the law doing exactly what it should, standing between a strong party and a weak one. But the law also exists to keep order, to make agreements enforceable so people can do business, and to punish harm; and honestly, a great deal of law protects the powerful, since they have the most influence over writing it in the first place. I'd say the main purpose is to make life predictable, and protecting the weak is the measure of whether a law is good rather than merely effective.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCto my mind the most important test of whether it's workingThis compact hedge, placed mid-sentence rather than as a full opening clause, is a more economical arrangement than the fuller hedges used at 6.5 and 7.0. It shows the same judgement delivered with less scaffolding.这个紧凑的缓和语被放在了句中,而不是作为一个完整的开头分句,比6.5和7.0中更完整的缓和语更简洁。它展现出同样的判断,用更少的支撑结构表达了出来。
    • LRa great deal of law protects the powerful'A great deal of law' is a more precise, slightly formal quantifier than the plainer 'some laws' at 6.5 and 'a lot of law' at 7.0. This kind of exact calibration is typical of the top band's vocabulary choices.'A great deal of law' 是一个比6.5中更平实的 'some laws' 和7.0中的 'a lot of law' 都更精确、略微更正式的量词。这种精准的校准正是最高分段词汇选择的典型特征。
    • GRAprotecting the weak is the measure of whether a law is good rather than merely effectiveThis closing sentence balances 'good' against 'merely effective' in a single controlled clause, more ambitious than the plain final sentence at 6.5 and 7.0. The rather/merely contrast is the kind of compact grammatical flourish that marks the higher band.这句结尾在一个有掌控力的分句里,把“好”和“仅仅有效”进行了平衡对比,比6.5和7.0中平实的结尾句更有野心。这种 rather/merely 的对比,正是标示更高分段的那种紧凑语法修饰。

Opens with a plain 'because' clause and lists the benefits of rules in short, separate sentences.以一个平实的 'because' 分句开头,并用简短、独立的句子列举规矩的好处。

Because thirty children in one room cannot decide everything themselves every day. My sister teaches secondary school, and her rule that phones go in a box by the door means she doesn't waste every lesson stopping students using their phones. Rules save the energy that would otherwise go into small arguments. They keep children safe, make treatment fair, and teach that a group has expectations. But my sister quietly stopped her rule about raising hands, because it was making shy students too quiet. A good school keeps the rules that help learning and removes the ones that only control children.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCBecause thirty children in one room cannot decide everything themselves every day. This opening states the reason in one plain sentence, functional but blunt as a standalone answer opener. The higher bands extend the same idea with an added clause — 'and rules are simply the shortcut' at 7.5 — creating a smoother lead into the example.这个开头用一句平实的话陈述了理由,有功能性,但作为一个独立的回答开头显得有点生硬。更高分段用一个附加的分句延伸了同样的想法——7.5中的 'and rules are simply the shortcut'——为过渡到例子创造了更流畅的引导。
    • LRstopping students using their phonesThis is plain, literal phrasing for what the phone rule prevents. The higher bands upgrade this to the more vivid 'policing screens', a more economical and slightly idiomatic collocation.这是对手机规矩所防止的事情的平实、字面化措辞。更高分段把它升级成了更生动的 'policing screens',是一个更简洁、略带地道色彩的搭配。
    • GRABut my sister quietly stopped her rule about raising hands, because it was making shy students too quiet. This is a plain sentence joined with 'because'. The 7.5 version instead uses 'once she noticed', a participle-style time clause that integrates cause and moment of realisation more tightly into one sentence.这是一个用 'because' 连接的平实句子。7.5版本则用了 'once she noticed',一个分词式的时间分句,把原因和意识到问题的那一刻更紧密地融合进了一个句子里。

Because thirty children in one room can't really negotiate everything from scratch every day. My sister teaches secondary school, and her rule that phones go in a box by the door exists so she doesn't spend each lesson policing screens — rules save the energy that would otherwise go into a hundred small arguments. They keep children safe, make treatment fair and predictable, and teach that a community has expectations of its members. It matches the 7.5 phrasing closely, showing the two higher bands share this exact upgrade.这是一个比6.5中平实的 'decide everything themselves' 更精确、略带地道色彩的短语。它和7.5的措辞十分吻合,说明这两个更高分段共享了同样的升级。
    • LRpolicing screensThis compact, vivid verb-noun pairing replaces the plainer 'stopping students using their phones' at 6.5 with something more economical and image-based. It's identical to the phrasing used at 7.5, showing shared vocabulary across the top two bands.这个紧凑、生动的动词-名词搭配,取代了6.5中更平实的 'stopping students using their phones',变成了一个更简洁、更有画面感的表达。它和7.5使用的措辞一致,说明这两个最高分段共享了词汇。
    • GRAThat said, she quietly dropped the rule about raising hands, because honestly it was silencing the shyer students. The discourse marker 'That said' signals a turn in the argument more smoothly than the plain 'But' at 6.5. It's slightly less integrated than the 7.5 version, which folds the same cause into a 'once she noticed' time clause within a longer sentence.话语标记词 'That said' 比6.5中平实的 'But' 更流畅地标示出了论证的转向。它比7.5版本略微不那么融合,后者把同样的原因融进了一个更长句子里的 'once she noticed' 时间分句。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCand rules are simply the shortcutAdding this clause onto the opening reason creates a tighter, more self-contained opening than the plain single-clause openers at 6.5 and 7.0. It signals the whole argument's direction in the very first sentence.在开头的理由上加上这个分句,创造出了一个比6.5和7.0中平实的单分句开头更紧凑、更自成一体的开头。它在第一句话里就标示出了整个论证的方向。
    • LRwhich tells you something importantThis phrase frames the sister's decision as evidence for a wider claim, a more sophisticated rhetorical move than the plain 'That said' transitions used at the lower bands. It shows the anecdote being used deliberately to support an argument.这个短语把妹妹的决定框定成了支撑一个更宏观论断的证据,比低分段使用的平实的 'That said' 过渡更精妙。它展现出这个轶事是被有意用来支撑一个论证的。

In my childhood in Hue, the rules were about respect and time. Greet every adult who came to the house before doing anything else, do homework before watching television, be home when the street lights came on, and never leave rice in the bowl. Those are fairly common rules here — about manners toward elders, about study, about chores and safety. Modern families also add rules about screen time and phone bedtimes, which didn't exist when I was young. Rules usually get looser as children grow up. I still greet every adult who enters a room, which my colleagues find a bit strange.

In my childhood in Hue the rules were mostly about respect and time. Greet every adult who came into the house properly before doing anything else, homework before television, be home when the street lights came on, and never leave rice in the bowl. Greet every adult who came into the house, properly, before doing anything else; homework before television; be home when the street lights came on; and never leave rice in the bowl. Those are fairly typical here: rules about manners toward elders, about study, about chores and about safety. Modern families add screen-time rules and phone bedtimes, which simply didn't exist for me. The rules loosen as children grow, or at least they should, and the best ones tend to come with reasons rather than bare commands. I still greet every adult who enters a room, a habit my colleagues find quaint and which I can't seem to shake.

    • FCThose are fairly typical here:Dropping the hedge 'I'd say' before the colon, unlike the 7.0 version, makes this a more confident, economical transition into the list of categories. It reads as a settled observation rather than a tentative one.和7.0版本不同,这里在冒号前去掉了缓和语 'I'd say',让这个过渡到类别列表的方式更自信、更简洁。它读起来像是一个已经确定的观察,而不是一个试探性的观察。
    • LRrather than bare commands'Bare commands' is a more precise, slightly abstract phrase than anything the lower bands use to describe rule-giving without explanation. It adds a genuinely new contrast that sharpens the point about reasons mattering.'Bare commands' 是一个比低分段用来描述“不带解释地下命令”的任何说法都更精确、略带抽象色彩的短语。它加上了一个真正全新的对比,让“理由很重要”这个论点更犀利。
    • GRAGreet every adult who came into the house, properly, before doing anything else; homework before television; be home when the street lights came on; and never leave rice in the bowl. This list uses semicolons between each item instead of commas, a more formal and controlled punctuation choice than the comma-and-'and' list used at 6.5 and 7.0. The consistent semicolon rhythm signals confident control of list structure.这个列表在每一项之间用了分号,而不是逗号,是一种比6.5和7.0中逗号加 'and' 的列表更正式、更有掌控力的标点选择。这种一致的分号节奏,标示出对列表结构自信的掌控。

It's one of the biggest challenges, and I've felt this myself. Two years ago, I designed a feature that used people's location, and when I asked what we were legally allowed to store and for how long, nobody — not our lawyer, not the client's — could give a clear answer, because the rules hadn't caught up with the technology. That lag is real, and things like AI, data, and online fraud move faster than governments. But I would hesitate to call it the biggest challenge. Enforcing the laws that already exist fairly, for everyone, is a bigger problem in most countries.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCIt's one of the biggest challenges, and I've felt this myself. This opening states the claim and the personal connection in one plain sentence joined by 'and'. The higher bands both add 'I'd say' and 'certainly' respectively, small but genuine hedging upgrades to the same idea.这个开头用一句由 'and' 连接的平实句子,陈述了论断和个人联系。更高分段分别加上了 'I'd say' 和 'certainly',对同一个想法做了虽小但真实的缓和语升级。
    • LRThat lag is realThis is a short, plain summary phrase. The higher bands keep the exact same phrase, showing that at this point the wording itself doesn't need to change — what changes is the sentence built around it.这是一个简短、平实的总结短语。更高分段完全保留了同一个短语,说明到这个地步,措辞本身并不需要变化——变化的是围绕它构建起来的句子。
    • GRABut I would hesitate to call it the biggest challenge. This is a short, simple sentence stating the qualification. The 7.5 version instead extends the equivalent idea into a longer sentence ending with 'strikes me as the bigger problem in most countries — new technology creates gaps...', adding a further explanatory clause.这是一个简短、简单的、陈述限定条件的句子。7.5版本则把这个想法延伸成了一个更长的句子,以 'strikes me as the bigger problem in most countries — new technology creates gaps...' 收尾,加上了一个进一步的解释性分句。

It's one of the biggest, I'd say, and I've felt it from the inside. Two years ago I designed a feature that used people's location, and when I asked what we were legally allowed to store and for how long, nobody — not our lawyer, not the client's — could give a straight answer, simply because the rules hadn't caught up with the technology yet. That lag is real: AI, data, drones, online fraud all move faster than parliaments can react. But honestly, I'd hesitate to call it the biggest challenge. Enforcing the laws that already exist, fairly and for everyone, strikes me as a bigger issue in most countries.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI've felt it from the insideThis idiomatic phrase for direct personal experience is more vivid than the plainer 'I've felt this myself' at 6.5. It is shared word for word with the 7.5 version, showing convergence in phrasing between the two top bands.这个用来表达亲身经历的地道短语,比6.5中更平实的 'I've felt this myself' 更生动。它和7.5版本逐字相同,说明这两个最高分段在措辞上出现了趋同。
    • LRAI, data, drones, online fraud all move faster than parliaments can reactThis list, introduced by a colon, names four specific areas rather than the vaguer 'things like AI, data, and online fraud' at 6.5. The added precision of naming 'drones' and 'parliaments' specifically is a small but real lexical upgrade.这个由冒号引出的列表,点出了四个具体的领域,而不是6.5中更模糊的 'things like AI, data, and online fraud'。明确点出 'drones' 和 'parliaments' 所增添的精确度,是一个虽小但真实的词汇升级。
    • GRAsimply because the rules hadn't caught up with the technology yetAdding 'simply' and 'yet' to this clause gives it a slightly more natural, spoken rhythm than the plainer version at 6.5. It's close to the 7.5 phrasing, which drops 'yet' for a marginally more economical sentence.在这个分句里加上 'simply' 和 'yet',让它比6.5中更平实的版本多了一点自然的口语节奏。它和7.5的措辞接近,后者去掉了 'yet',句子略微更简洁。

Closes with a dash-marked contrast between what 'creates gaps' and what 'creates the sense that the law belongs to someone else'.以一个破折号标记的对比收尾,对比的是“制造漏洞”和“让人觉得法律属于别人”这两件事。

It's one of the biggest, certainly, and I've felt it from the inside. Two years ago I designed a feature that used people's location, and when I asked what we were legally allowed to store and for how long, nobody — not our lawyer, not the client's — could give a straight answer, because the rules simply hadn't caught up with the technology. That lag is real: AI, data, drones and online fraud all move faster than parliaments can legislate. But I'd hesitate to call it the biggest challenge of all. Enforcing the laws that already exist, fairly and consistently for everyone, strikes me as the bigger problem in most countries — new technology creates gaps, while unequal enforcement creates the sense that the law belongs to someone else entirely.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCIt's one of the biggest, certainly, and I've felt it from the inside.Replacing the hedge 'I'd say' with the more confident 'certainly' makes this opening firmer than the equivalent line at 7.0. It signals a settled judgement rather than a tentative one from the very first clause.用更自信的 'certainly' 取代缓和语 'I'd say',让这个开头比7.0中对应的那句话更坚定。它从第一个分句起,就标示出这是一个已经确定的判断,而不是一个试探性的判断。
    • LRunequal enforcement creates the sense that the law belongs to someone else entirelyThis is a more abstract, precisely worded closing idea than anything the lower bands attempt; neither 6.5 nor 7.0 develops the enforcement point this far. It shows a wider range of abstract vocabulary being used to add genuinely new content.这是一个比低分段尝试过的任何说法都更抽象、措辞更精确的收尾想法;6.5和7.0都没有把“执法”这一点展开到这个程度。它展现出用更广泛的抽象词汇,来增添真正全新的内容。
    • GRAnew technology creates gaps, while unequal enforcement creates the sense that the law belongs to someone else entirelyThis closing sentence balances two parallel 'creates...' clauses joined by 'while', more ambitious than the shorter final sentences at 6.5 and 7.0. The parallel structure itself creates a considered, rounded conclusion.这句结尾用 'while' 连接了两个平行的 'creates...' 分句,进行了平衡对比,比6.5和7.0中更简短的结尾句更有野心。这种平行结构本身,就营造出了一种经过深思熟虑、圆满的结论。

Opens with a short direct answer ('Fines, I think') and gives the reasoning through a simple comparison joined by 'but'.以一个简短直接的答案开头('Fines, I think'),并通过一个用 'but' 连接的简单比较给出理由。

Fines, I think, but scaled to what they mean to the person. A café owner near me pays her parking fines as a monthly cost and parks wherever she wants, but for a delivery driver, one fine is a whole day's pay. The same penalty feels like nothing to one person and a crisis to another, so fines based on income seem fairer to me. Besides money, penalties that fix the harm also work well, like points on a licence or simply towing the car. What isn't appropriate is a penalty that follows someone for years. A parking mistake should cost something, not a future.

    • FCFines, I think, but scaled to what they mean to the person. This one-word-plus-hedge opening states the answer immediately, clear and economical. Both higher bands keep this exact structure, swapping only the hedge verb, showing that this opening pattern itself is already near the ceiling of what changes across bands.这个一词加缓和语的开头立刻给出了答案,清楚、简洁。两个更高分段都保留了完全相同的结构,只是换了缓和语动词,说明这个开头模式本身已经接近了各分段间变化的上限。
    • LRfeels like nothing to one person and a crisis to anotherThis is plain, direct phrasing for the contrast in impact. The higher bands tighten it to 'a shrug for one and a crisis for the other' (7.0) and 'a shrug for one and a small crisis for the other' (7.5), using the more vivid, economical noun 'shrug'.这是对影响力差异的平实、直接的措辞。更高分段把它收紧成了 'a shrug for one and a crisis for the other'(7.0)和 'a shrug for one and a small crisis for the other'(7.5),用了更生动、更简洁的名词 'shrug'。
    • GRAWhat isn't appropriate is a penalty that follows someone for years. This is a short, simple sentence stating the final point. The 7.5 version instead extends this into a longer sentence with a dash, adding the closing generalisation 'a parking mistake should cost something, not a future' within the same flowing structure.这是一个简短、简单的、陈述最后一点的句子。7.5版本则用破折号把它延伸成了一个更长的句子,在同一个流畅的结构里加上了收尾的概括 'a parking mistake should cost something, not a future'。

Fines, I'd say, but scaled to what they actually mean to the person paying them. A café owner near me pays her parking fines as a monthly business cost and parks wherever she likes, whereas for a delivery driver, a single fine can be a whole day's income. The same penalty is basically a shrug for one person and a crisis for the other, so income-based fines, which some countries already use, seem fairer to me. Beyond money, penalties that fix the harm directly also work well — points on a licence for repeat offences, community service, or simply towing the vehicle. What's inappropriate is anything that follows a person for years over a minor mistake.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCwhereas for a delivery driver'Whereas' creates a tighter formal contrast than the plain 'but' used at 6.5 for the same comparison. It's a step toward the semicolon used at 7.5 for an even more compact version of the same contrast.'Whereas' 为同样的比较营造出了一种比6.5中平实的 'but' 更紧凑、更正式的对比。这是朝着7.5中使用的分号迈进的一步,把同样的对比变得更紧凑。
    • LRa shrug for one person and a crisis for the other'A shrug' is a more vivid, economical noun than the plainer 'feels like nothing' used at 6.5. It's nearly identical to the 7.5 phrasing, which adds only the word 'small' before 'crisis'.'A shrug' 是一个比6.5中更平实的 'feels like nothing' 更生动、更简洁的名词。它和7.5的措辞几乎一模一样,后者只是在 'crisis' 前加了个 'small'。
    • GRAWhat's inappropriate is anything that follows a person for years over a minor mistake. This sentence adds the phrase 'over a minor mistake' onto the basic structure used at 6.5, giving slightly more precision. It's still a standalone final sentence, unlike the 7.5 version, which folds the same idea into a longer dash-linked sentence.这句话在6.5使用的基本结构上加上了短语 'over a minor mistake',使得表达略微更精确。它仍然是一个独立的结尾句,不像7.5版本那样把同样的想法融入了一个更长的、用破折号连接的句子里。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCA café owner near me treats her parking fines as a monthly business cost and parks wherever she likes; for a delivery driver, one fine is a day's income. The semicolon here replaces the connecting word used at the lower bands ('but' at 6.5, 'whereas' at 7.0), creating a tighter, more compact contrast between the two people. This punctuation choice itself is a marker of confident sentence control.这里的分号取代了低分段使用的连接词('but' 用于6.5,'whereas' 用于7.0),在两个人之间营造出更紧凑的对比。这种标点选择本身,就标示出了对句子的自信掌控。
    • LRstrike me as considerably fairer'Strike me as' is a more natural, slightly idiomatic way of expressing a judgement than the plainer 'seem fairer to me' used at 6.5 and 7.0. Paired with 'considerably', it adds precise calibration that the lower bands don't attempt.'Strike me as' 是一种比6.5和7.0中更平实的 'seem fairer to me' 更自然、略带地道色彩的表达判断的方式。搭配 'considerably',它增添了一种低分段没有尝试过的精确校准。
    • GRAWhat's genuinely inappropriate is anything that follows a person for years — a parking mistake should cost something, not a future. This closing sentence uses a dash to attach the final generalisation directly onto the main clause, more compact than the separate final sentence used at 6.5 and 7.0 for the same idea. The single continuous structure gives the ending more punch.这句结尾用破折号把最后的概括直接接到了主句上,比6.5和7.0中就同一想法使用的独立结尾句更紧凑。这种单一连贯的结构,让结尾更有冲击力。

More rules, I think, and less freedom, which is not really the same thing. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCMore rules, I think, and less freedom, which is not really the same thing. This opening states the key distinction in one plain sentence with a simple hedge. • LRso they watch them more closelyThis is plain, direct phrasing for the consequence of smaller families and more risk-awareness. • GRAinvolved running free until dark with almost no rules beyond a few sharp ones about the river and respect for elders; my niece's week, by contrast, is scheduled, supervised and tracked by phoneThe semicolon plus 'by contrast' creates an even more compact join between the two childhoods than the 'whereas' clause used at 7.0. This punctuation-based contrast is a clear marker of higher grammatical control.分号加上 'by contrast',在两代人的童年之间创造出了一种比7.0使用的 'whereas' 分句更紧凑的连接。这种以标点为基础的对比,是更高语法掌控力的明确标志。

States agreement directly and lists the personal examples in one sentence joined with commas and a dash.直接表明同意,并在一个句子里用逗号和破折号列举了个人经历的例子。

I agree, and I'll include myself here. I've ridden on a pavement to escape a flood, photocopied a whole textbook at university, and gone through a red light at two in the morning on an empty road — none of it serious, but all of it illegal. Laws cover so much of daily life that living completely inside them needs either unusual care or unusual luck. Most people break small rules where enforcement is weak and no real harm is done, while still seeing themselves as law-abiding. The real difference isn't between people who break laws and people who don't, but between small breaches and real harm to others.

    • FCI agree, and I'll include myself here. This short opening states the position and the personal stake in one plain sentence. Both higher bands add 'honestly' or repeat the same idea with slightly more natural phrasing, such as 'I'll happily include myself in the count' at 7.5.这个简短的开头用一句平实的话陈述了立场和个人的牵涉。两个更高分段都加上了 'honestly',或者用略微更自然的措辞重复了同样的想法,比如7.5中的 'I'll happily include myself in the count'。
    • LRno real harm is doneThis is plain, direct phrasing for the absence of consequences. The higher bands upgrade this to 'harm seems absent', a slightly more precise and formal phrasing shared by both 7.0 and 7.5.这是对“没有后果”这一状态的平实、直接的措辞。更高分段把它升级成了 'harm seems absent',这是7.0和7.5共用的一种略微更精确、更正式的措辞。
    • GRAThe real difference isn't between people who break laws and people who don't, but between small breaches and real harm to others. This closing sentence uses a 'not... but' contrast, which is accurate but stated as a single flat structure. The 7.5 version extends the same contrast with a semicolon and an added final clause about 'almost everyone... sits firmly in the first group', giving the ending more weight.这句结尾用了一个 'not... but' 的对比结构,准确但显得是一个单一、平淡的结构。7.5版本用分号延伸了同样的对比,并加上了一个关于 'almost everyone... sits firmly in the first group' 的结尾分句,让结尾更有分量。

Adds 'honestly' before the personal admission and uses 'technically illegal' rather than the plain 'illegal' of the 6.5 band.在个人的坦白之前加上了 'honestly',并用 'technically illegal' 代替了6.5分段中平实的 'illegal'。

I agree, and honestly I'll include myself in that. I've ridden on a pavement to escape a flood, photocopied an entire textbook at university, and gone through a red light at two in the morning on an empty road — none of it serious, all of it technically illegal. Laws cover so much of daily life that living entirely inside them requires either unusual care or unusual luck. Most people, I'd say, break small rules where enforcement is loose and harm seems absent, while still thinking of themselves, fairly accurately, as law-abiding citizens. The real distinction isn't between people who break laws and people who don't; it's between minor, occasional breaches and genuine harm done to others.

    • FCall of it technically illegal'Technically' is a small but precise qualifier that neither the 6.5 nor the 7.5 answer includes, subtly softening the claim while keeping it accurate. It's a good example of a single well-placed word doing real work.'Technically' 是一个虽小但精确的限定词,6.5和7.5的回答都没有用到,它微妙地软化了论断,同时又保持了准确性。这是一个单个词精准放置、发挥真正作用的好例子。
    • LRharm seems absentThis is a more precise, slightly formal phrase than the plain 'no real harm is done' used at 6.5. It is repeated almost exactly at 7.5, showing the two higher bands converge on this exact vocabulary choice.这是一个比6.5中平实的 'no real harm is done' 更精确、略微更正式的短语。它在7.5中几乎被逐字重复,说明这两个更高分段在这个具体的词汇选择上出现了趋同。
    • GRAThe real distinction isn't between people who break laws and people who don't; it's between minor, occasional breaches and genuine harm done to others. This closing sentence uses a semicolon to join the two halves of the contrast into one continuous structure, a step up from the single 'not... but' clause used at 6.5. It's very close to the 7.5 version, which adds one further clause naming who falls into the first group.这句结尾用分号把对比的两半连接进了一个连贯的结构里,比6.5使用的单一 'not... but' 分句更进一步。它和7.5版本非常接近,后者又加了一个分句,点明了谁属于第一类人。

Opens with the idiomatic 'I'll happily include myself in the count' and closes with a dash-marked final clause naming the speaker as part of the group.以地道的 'I'll happily include myself in the count' 开头,并以一个破折号标记的结尾分句收尾,点明说话者也是这个群体的一部分。

I agree, and I'll happily include myself in the count. I've ridden on a pavement to escape a flood, photocopied an entire textbook at university, and gone through a red light at two in the morning on an empty road — none of it serious, all of it illegal. Laws cover so much of daily life that living entirely inside them requires either unusual care or unusual luck. Most people break small rules where enforcement is loose and harm seems absent, while thinking of themselves, quite accurately, as law-abiding. The real distinction isn't between people who break laws and people who don't; it's between minor, occasional breaches and harm actually done to others — and almost everyone, myself included, sits firmly in the first group.

    • FCI'll happily include myself in the count'Include myself in the count' is a more vivid, idiomatic phrase than the plain 'include myself here' at 6.5 or 'include myself in that' at 7.0. It turns a functional admission into a small, self-aware joke.'Include myself in the count' 是一个比6.5中平实的 'include myself here' 或7.0中的 'include myself in that' 都更生动、更地道的短语。它把一个功能性的坦白,变成了一个小小的、带自我意识的玩笑。
    • LRwhile thinking of themselves, quite accurately, as law-abidingInserting 'quite accurately' as a mid-clause aside is a more compact, natural way of adding the same evaluative point than the fuller phrase 'fairly accurately, as law-abiding citizens' used at 7.0. The trimmed noun 'law-abiding' alone, without 'citizens', is also slightly more economical.把 'quite accurately' 作为一个句中插入语,是一种比7.0使用的更完整的短语 'fairly accurately, as law-abiding citizens' 更紧凑、更自然的方式,来加上同样带评价色彩的论点。单独精简的形容词 'law-abiding',不带 'citizens',也略微更简洁。
    • GRAand almost everyone, myself included, sits firmly in the first groupThis final dash-marked clause extends the closing sentence one step further than the 7.0 version, adding a self-inclusive aside and a vivid closing image ('sits firmly'). The extra clause is what gives this ending its rounded, conclusive feel.这个最后由破折号标记的分句,比7.0版本把结尾句又延伸了一步,加上了一个把自己也包括进去的插入语,以及一个生动的收尾意象('sits firmly')。正是这个额外的分句,让这个结尾有了一种圆满、有定论的感觉。
