6.5 分

The answer uses plain, direct description of the problem and result ('My shoulders don't hurt as much anymore, and I feel calmer during the day, especially before meetings'), staying clear but linguistically simple, as typical of Band 6.5.这段回答用平实直接的方式描述问题和结果('我的肩膀不再像以前那么疼了,白天也感觉更平静,尤其是开会之前'),保持了清晰度但语言表现简单,是Band 6.5的典型特征。

The change I want to talk about is that I started doing yoga three mornings a week. I began this about four months ago, in May.

Before that, I always felt stiff and tired after sitting at my desk all day designing apps. My neck and shoulders hurt a lot, and I didn't sleep very well either. I decided something had to change, so I started looking for a solution.

My colleague Linh was the one who actually helped me. She has been doing yoga for years, and she told me about a small studio in Vincom mall, not far from my office. She took me to my first class and showed me some basic poses so I wouldn't feel embarrassed in front of everyone else. Now I go by myself most weeks, but sometimes she still joins me.

This change has been very positive for me. My shoulders don't hurt as much anymore, and I feel calmer during the day, especially before meetings. I also sleep better at night now. It's a small change, but it has made a real difference to how I feel every day, and I'm glad Linh pushed me to try it.

  • FCBefore that, I always felt stiff and tired after sitting at my desk all day designing apps. This sentence opens the "before" section of the narrative with a straightforward statement of physical discomfort, using the time marker "before that" to signal the timeline shift without any more sophisticated discourse marker. The two adjectives "stiff and tired" name the problem plainly rather than building toward it with an anecdote or example, consistent with the one-reason, direct-answer pattern the descriptor associates with Band 6.5 fluency. A stronger answer might instead open this section with a specific moment ("there was one evening when...") rather than a general statement of how things used to feel.这句话用一个直白的身体不适陈述开启了叙述中"之前"的部分,用时间标记"before that"来示意时间线的转换,而没有使用任何更精巧的话语标记。两个形容词"stiff and tired"直白地点出了问题,而不是通过轶事或例子逐步铺垫,符合描述语与Band 6.5流利度相关联的"一个理由、直接作答"模式。更强的答案可能会改用一个具体的时刻开启这一部分("there was one evening when..."),而不是一句关于过去感觉如何的笼统陈述。
  • LRMy shoulders don't hurt as much anymore, and I feel calmer during the dayThe vocabulary here — "hurt," "calmer," "during the day" — is entirely common, high-frequency wording with no attempt at a more specific or medical-sounding alternative like "less tense" or "more centred," exactly the ceiling the Band 6.5 descriptor sets for lexical resource. The comparative "as much anymore" is a simple, functional way to mark improvement over time rather than a more precise degree expression. Reporting two separate results side by side with "and" also keeps the sentence additive rather than integrated, reinforcing the plain, list-like quality typical of this band.
  • GRAIt's a small change, but it has made a real difference to how I feel every dayThe sentence uses "but" to set up a simple size-versus-impact contrast ("small change" vs. "real difference"), an accurate and natural way to close the story but one that relies on coordination rather than subordination. A Band 7.0 or higher version might nest the second clause inside a more complex frame ("even though it's a small change, it's made...") or use a cleft structure to emphasise the outcome. Here, the noun phrase "how I feel every day" functions as the object of "difference to," a small but useful piece of grammatical control within an otherwise simple sentence.这句话用"but"构建了一个简单的规模对比影响的对照("small change"对"real difference"),这是一种准确而自然的收尾方式,但它依赖的是并列而不是从属结构。Band 7.0或更高分段的版本可能会把第二个分句嵌套进一个更复杂的框架里("even though it's a small change, it's made..."),或者用强调句结构来突出这个结果。这里,名词短语"how I feel every day"充当"difference to"的宾语,是这个原本简单的句子中一个虽小却有用的语法控制细节。
7.0 分

The answer develops a clear personal reason ('being in my thirties and still that reliant on her') and a specific supporting detail (the notebook from a colleague), closing with a natural, hedged reflection, matching Band 7.0's comfortable balance of narration and reasoning.这段回答用一个清晰的个人理由('都三十多岁的人了,还这么依赖妈妈')和一个具体的支撑细节(同事借的笔记本)来展开,并以一句自然、带有缓冲语气的反思收尾,符合Band 7.0在叙述与说理之间运用自如的平衡。

The change I'd like to talk about is that since around February I've been going back to my mother's kitchen every other Sunday to learn how she cooks, instead of just eating whatever's quickest during the week.

I decided to make this change mainly because I realised I could barely cook anything beyond instant noodles and fried eggs, and every time I visited my parents I'd end up asking my mother the same questions about a dish, then forgetting the answer within a week. It felt a bit embarrassing, being in my thirties and still that reliant on her.

My mother is obviously the person who's helped me most, though not always patiently - she gets a bit frustrated when I don't measure things properly, since she cooks by instinct rather than following any recipe. My colleague Linh also helped indirectly, by lending me a notebook to actually write down the steps each time, which was something I'd never thought to do before.

This change has been a genuinely positive one for a few reasons. Practically, I eat better now, because I bring home leftovers and cook simple versions of her dishes during the week instead of ordering food constantly. But honestly, the bigger benefit has been spending those Sunday afternoons with her, just the two of us in the kitchen, which we didn't really do much before. She's getting older, and I think part of me wanted to learn these recipes while I still can, before they only exist in her memory. It's a small, fairly ordinary change, but it's given me something I didn't expect - not just a few new dishes, but a better relationship with my mother along the way.

  • FCBut honestly, the bigger benefit has been spending those Sunday afternoons with her, just the two of us in the kitchen, which we didn't really do much before.'But honestly' functions as a natural spoken pivot, signalling that the speaker is about to correct or refine what they just said — moving from the practical benefit (eating better) to what they consider the real, more personal one (time with their mother). This kind of self-correcting move, using a natural connector rather than a formal transition, is the spoken-style development the Band 7.0 descriptor calls for, and it's what turns a simple list of benefits into an answer with a clear priority.'But honestly' 起到了一个自然的口语转折作用,标示出说话者即将修正或深化刚才所说的内容——从实际的好处(吃得更健康)转向他们认为真正、更私人的好处(与母亲相处的时光)。这种运用自然连接词而非正式过渡语的自我修正手法,正是7.0分描述所要求的那种口语化发展,也正是它把一份简单的好处清单变成了一个有明确主次的回答。
  • LRcooks by instinct'Cooks by instinct' captures, in two words, a whole approach to cooking — no measurements, no recipe — that contrasts implicitly with the notebook the speaker later describes using themselves. This kind of compact, natural collocation doing more descriptive work than its length suggests is the flexible vocabulary Band 7.0 rewards, over a more literal phrase like 'cooks without following instructions'.'Cooks by instinct' 仅用两个词就概括了一整套烹饪方式——不用量具,不看食谱——与说话者后来描述自己使用的笔记本形成了隐含的对比。这种紧凑、自然的搭配所承载的描述作用远超其字面长度所暗示的,正是7.0分所奖励的灵活词汇运用,胜过 'cooks without following instructions' 这种更字面化的表达。
  • GRAI think part of me wanted to learn these recipes while I still can, before they only exist in her memory. The sentence layers two time-based subordinate clauses onto one main idea — 'while I still can' and 'before they only exist in her memory' — giving the wish a double time pressure (limited opportunity now, and an implied loss later). Combining two different subordinators to build that layered urgency in a single sentence, rather than stating the two ideas separately, is the comfortable complexity typical of Band 7.0 grammar.这句话在一个主要想法上叠加了两个基于时间的从属分句——'while I still can' 和 'before they only exist in her memory'——为这个愿望赋予了双重的时间压力(当下机会有限,以及未来隐含的失落)。在一个句子里结合两种不同的从属连词来构建这种层层递进的紧迫感,而不是把两个想法分开陈述,正是7.0分语法典型的从容复杂度。
7.5 分

The dry, understated closing line - 'My work hasn't changed at all — but the person doing it has, a little' - and the wry aside about being treated 'as a very young child' show the reflective, idiomatic economy typical of Band 7.5.结尾那句克制而干脆的话——'我的工作本身一点都没变——但做这份工作的人,变了一点点'——加上那句关于被当作'一个很小的孩子'对待的诙谐插话,都展现出Band 7.5那种反思性、地道简练的表达。

The change I'd talk about is that since March I've been swimming in the sea at six in the morning, three or four days a week, at Mỹ Khê beach, which is ten minutes from my flat by bicycle.

I made the change for a boring reason: my back. Ten years of sitting at a desk drawing rectangles had given me a dull ache that turned into a sharp one in February, and the physiotherapist I saw gave me a choice between a long list of exercises I knew I wouldn't do and swimming, which she said would do most of the same work without feeling like homework. I hadn't swum properly since school, and I was slightly afraid of the sea, so I chose it partly to prove something.

The person who actually made it happen was my neighbour, Mr Bảy, who is seventy-one and has swum at that beach every morning for thirty years. When he heard I'd started, he simply told me to be at the gate at ten to six and then taught me, over a few weeks, how to read the waves, how to breathe without swallowing half the bay, and how to get out when the current changes. There's a whole community of retired people down there at dawn who treated me, at thirty-four, as a very young child, which I found strangely comforting.

Why it's been positive goes beyond my back, which is fine now. Starting the day in cold water and silence, with the sun coming up over the sea, makes everything that happens afterwards feel smaller and more manageable. I sleep better, I eat breakfast properly for the first time in years, and I've made friends who are forty years older than me and much wiser about most things. My work hasn't changed at all — but the person doing it has, a little.

  • FCMy work hasn't changed at all — but the person doing it has, a little. This dry, understated closing contrast plays the literal fact (the work itself is unchanged) against the deeper truth (the person has changed), using minimal words and a self-correcting dash rather than spelling the contrast out explicitly the way a Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would ("my work is the same, but I feel like a different person now"). The understatement -- "a little" -- is itself a considered rhetorical choice, avoiding overstatement after a story about back pain, fear of the sea, and a new daily ritual. This kind of restrained, ironic reflection is exactly the evaluative depth the 7.5 descriptor rewards over plain summary.
  • LRtreated me, at thirty-four, as a very young child, which I found strangely comfortingThe phrase pairs an unexpected adjective combination -- "strangely comforting," where a feeling that might normally read as patronising instead reads as reassuring -- showing precise, idiomatic control of tone rather than literal description like "they were kind to me even though I was older than them," which a Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would more likely produce. The inserted age detail ("at thirty-four") dropped into the middle of the clause also adds a self-aware, slightly comic touch about being treated as a beginner as an adult. This precision in emotional vocabulary lets the sentence convey a complex, slightly contradictory feeling in a single breath.
  • GRAthe physiotherapist I saw gave me a choice between a long list of exercises I knew I wouldn't do and swimmingTwo relative clauses are embedded here -- "I saw" modifying "physiotherapist," and "I knew I wouldn't do" modifying "exercises" -- nested inside a larger parallel structure contrasting two options, a sustained level of grammatical complexity beyond the single relative or subordinate clause a Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would typically manage. The self-aware admission embedded in the second relative clause ("exercises I knew I wouldn't do") also adds honest, specific characterisation rather than a neutral list, so the grammar and the content reinforce each other rather than the structure feeling like empty complexity.

This band states a clear opinion ('I think it can be good, but only sometimes') and gives one plain reason and one short example, using simple linking words like 'but' and 'because' throughout.这个分段陈述了一个清晰的观点(‘I think it can be good, but only sometimes’),给出了一个朴素的理由和一个简短的例子,全篇使用‘but’、‘because’这类简单的连接词。

I think it can be good, but only sometimes. I know a designer who changed studios every year and a half for six years. His salary went up fast, but he never saw one of his designs actually used by real people. Changing jobs can bring new skills and more money, and it stops you feeling bored. But if you move too fast, you don't learn from your mistakes. In my opinion, staying three to five years is better, because you finish things and still keep growing.

    查看中文翻译

    我认为这可以是件好事,但只是有时候。我认识一位设计师,六年里每一年半就换一次工作室。他的薪水涨得很快,但他从来没有见过自己设计的哪一件作品真正被普通人使用过。换工作能带来新技能和更多的钱,也能让你不觉得无聊。但如果换得太频繁,你就没法从自己的错误中吸取教训。我认为,待三到五年更好,因为这样你既能把事情做完,又能继续成长。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI think it can be good, but only sometimes. This short opening sentence gives the position immediately, which keeps the answer easy to follow, but the link between the two clauses relies on the simple contrast word 'but' rather than any developed reasoning. A 7.0 answer would soften this same idea with a hedge like 'honestly, I'd say', and the 7.5 version opens with an even more confident, almost aphoristic claim.这个简短的开场句立刻给出了立场,让答案容易理解,但两个分句之间的联系依赖于简单的对比词‘but’,而不是任何成熟的推理。7.0分答案会用像‘honestly, I'd say’这样的缓冲语来软化同样的想法,而7.5版本则以一个更自信、近乎格言式的论断开头。
    • LRChanging jobs can bring new skills and more moneyThe vocabulary here is entirely common and safe, which keeps the meaning clear but flat. The 7.0 band upgrades this to 'moving jobs does bring new skills, wider contacts and usually more money', adding 'wider contacts' as a slightly less obvious collocation, while 7.5 uses 'job-hopping undeniably widens your skill set and your network'.这里的词汇完全常见且安全,让意思清晰但平淡。7.0分段把它升级为‘moving jobs does bring new skills, wider contacts and usually more money’,加入了‘wider contacts’这个略微不那么显而易见的搭配,而7.5分则使用‘job-hopping undeniably widens your skill set and your network’。
    • GRABut if you move too fast, you don't learn from your mistakes. This is a basic conditional clause, accurate but grammatically simple, kept as its own separate sentence rather than integrated into a longer structure. The 7.5 band folds an equivalent idea into a much longer sentence built on coordinated clauses and a dash-marked aside, showing far greater range.这是一个基础的条件从句,准确但语法简单,作为独立的句子存在,而不是融入一个更长的结构。7.5分段把一个对等的想法融入了一个长得多的句子,构建在并列分句和破折号标注的插入语之上,展现出更强的语言范围。
    7.0 分

This band adds a spoken hedge ('Honestly, I'd say') and one longer, more complex sentence describing the designer, moving beyond the flat statements of the 6.5 version.这个分段加入了一个口语化缓冲语(‘Honestly, I'd say’),以及一个描述设计师的更长、更复杂的句子,超越了6.5版本平淡的陈述。

Honestly, I'd say it depends on how often. A designer I know switched studios every eighteen months for six years, and although his salary rose faster than most people's, he's never actually seen a product he worked on reach real users, which is a bit sad when you think about it. To be fair, moving jobs does bring new skills, wider contacts and usually more money, and it keeps people from getting stale. But the deepest learning in most careers comes from staying long enough to live with your own mistakes. I'd say three to five years is roughly the sweet spot.

    • FCHonestly, I'd say it depends on how often. The hedge 'Honestly, I'd say' softens the claim and sounds more like natural spoken opinion than the blunt 'I think it can be good' of the 6.5 band. It's not as fluent as the 7.5 opening, which drops the hedge in favour of a confident aphorism, but it marks a clear step up in natural cohesion.缓冲语‘Honestly, I'd say’软化了论断,听起来比6.5分段直白的‘I think it can be good’更像自然的口语观点。它不如7.5分开头那样流畅——后者舍弃了缓冲语,转而使用一个自信的格言——但它标志着自然连贯性上的明显进步。
    • LRwhich is a bit sad when you think about itThis phrase adds a personal, reflective comment that the 6.5 band never attempts, showing the speaker processing the story rather than just reporting it. It's still fairly casual compared with the 7.5 band's sharper 'he's brilliant at starting things and hopeless at finishing them', which pairs two precise, contrasting adjectives.这个短语加入了一个个人化的反思性评论,是6.5分段从不尝试的,展现出说话者在消化这个故事,而不只是转述它。相比7.5分段更犀利的‘he's brilliant at starting things and hopeless at finishing them’——它配对了两个精确、对比鲜明的形容词——这仍然相当随意。
    • GRAand although his salary rose faster than most people's, he's never actually seen a product he worked on reach real usersThis sentence uses a subordinate 'although' clause embedded inside a longer structure, more ambitious than anything in the 6.5 answer. It's accurate but a little linear compared with the 7.5 version, which achieves the same contrast through a dash within one continuous sentence.这个句子用了一个嵌入更长结构中的从属‘although’从句,比6.5分答案里的任何句子都更有野心。它是准确的,但相比7.5版本略显线性——后者通过一个破折号在一个连贯的句子里达到了同样的对比效果。
    7.5 分

This band opens with a compact, confident claim ('Regularly, within reason, I'd argue') and builds one long, flexible sentence held together by dashes and a semicolon, closing with an evaluative, almost aphoristic final line.这个分段以一个紧凑、自信的论断开头(‘Regularly, within reason, I'd argue’),构建了一个由破折号和分号串联起来的长句、灵活的句子,并以一句评价性的、近乎格言式的结语收尾。

Regularly, within reason, I'd argue. Take a designer I know, who hopped between studios every eighteen months for six years and saw his salary climb faster than almost anyone's — yet he's never once watched a product he designed actually reach users, and it shows in his work; he's brilliant at starting things and hopeless at finishing them. Job-hopping undeniably widens your skill set and your network, and keeps you from going stale, but the deepest learning in most careers only comes from sticking around long enough to live with your own mistakes. My own sweet spot would be three to five years — long enough to see something through, short enough to keep growing. Anything faster than that tends to be a red flag in disguise.

    • FCRegularly, within reason, I'd argue. This compressed opening is far more economical than the fuller sentences of the lower bands, immediately signalling a nuanced position without spelling out every step. Where the 6.5 band needs a full sentence for the same idea and 7.0 adds 'Honestly, I'd say', this version trusts the reader to follow a much tighter opening.这个压缩式的开头,比低分段更完整的句子简练得多,立刻示意了一个细腻的立场,而无需把每一步都说清楚。6.5分段需要一个完整的句子来表达同样的想法,7.0分加上了‘Honestly, I'd say’,而这个版本则相信读者能跟上一个更紧凑的开头。
    • LRhopped between studios every eighteen months'Hopped between studios' is a vivid, slightly idiomatic collocation that replaces the plain 'changed studios' used in the lower bands with something more precise and image-rich. Paired later with 'a red flag in disguise', it shows a wider range of lexis than the safer vocabulary of the 6.5 and 7.0 versions.‘Hopped between studios’是一个生动、略带地道色彩的搭配,取代了低分段使用的朴素说法‘changed studios’,换成了更精确、更具画面感的表达。后面再配上‘a red flag in disguise’,展现出比6.5和7.0版本更安全的词汇范围更宽广的词汇。
    • GRAyet he's never once watched a product he designed actually reach users, and it shows in his work; he's brilliant at starting things and hopeless at finishing themThis single sentence chains a relative clause, a coordinated clause and a semicolon-linked contrast together, considerably more ambitious than the separate short sentences of 6.5 or the single subordinate clause of 7.0. The semicolon signals confident control of punctuation-based structure lower bands avoid entirely.这个单一的句子把一个关系从句、一个并列分句和一个用分号连接的对比串联在一起,比6.5分段独立的短句或7.0分段单一的从属从句都更有野心。分号标志着一种对基于标点符号的结构的自信掌控,是低分段完全会避免的。

This band gives a direct answer ('Not always, I think') followed by simple linked sentences with 'but' and 'so', using plain vocabulary throughout.这个分段给出了一个直接的回答(‘Not always, I think’),后面跟着用‘but’和‘so’连接的简单句子,全篇使用朴素的词汇。

Not always, I think. The best illustrator in our studio became a manager, but she stopped drawing for a whole year and spent her days in meetings. In the end, she asked to go back to her old job, even for less money, and now she is happier. A promotion usually brings more money and respect, but it also means a different kind of job. Sometimes the skills that got you promoted are not the skills the new job needs. So promotion is only good if you really want that new role.

    我觉得不总是这样。我们工作室里最好的插画师当上了经理,但她整整一年没有画画,每天都泡在会议里。最后,她要求调回原来的岗位,即使薪水更低也无所谓,现在她过得更开心了。升职通常会带来更多的钱和尊重,但也意味着一份完全不同的工作。有时候,让你获得升职的那些技能,并不是新岗位所需要的技能。所以,升职只有在你真心想要那个新角色时才是好事。

    • FCNot always, I think.A short, direct opening states the position with no hedging, which is clear but blunt compared with the softer openings of the higher bands. The 7.0 version adds 'to be honest' for a more conversational tone, and 7.5 adds a justifying clause, showing a fuller range of ways to open an opinion.一个简短、直接的开场,不加任何缓冲地陈述了立场,这清晰但直白,相比高分段更柔和的开头。7.0版本加了‘to be honest’以获得更对话化的语气,7.5则加了一个论证性从句,展现出开启一个观点更丰富的方式。
    • LReven for less moneyThe phrasing here is plain and functional. The 7.0 band upgrades this to 'even at a lower salary', a slightly more formal collocation, while 7.5 keeps the same phrase but embeds it inside a much longer, more fluent sentence.这里的措辞朴素且功能性。7.0分段把它升级为‘even at a lower salary’,这是一个略微更正式的搭配,而7.5分保留了同样的短语,但把它嵌入了一个长得多、更流畅的句子里。
    • GRAIn the end, she asked to go back to her old job, even for less money, and now she is happier. This sentence strings together three short ideas with commas and 'and', accurate but additive rather than genuinely complex. Compare the 7.5 version, where the same content is compressed into one flowing sentence built around a single dash.这个句子用逗号和‘and’把三个简短的想法串联在一起,准确但只是累加,而不是真正的复杂。相比之下,7.5版本把同样的内容压缩进了一个围绕单一破折号构建的流畅句子。
    7.0 分

This band softens the opening with 'to be honest' and links the illustrator's story into one longer sentence using a dash, moving beyond the short separate sentences of 6.5.这个分段用‘to be honest’软化了开头,并用一个破折号把插画师的故事连接成一个更长的句子,超越了6.5分那种简短独立的句子。

Not always, to be honest. Our studio's best illustrator was promoted to run a team, and she basically drew nothing for a year, spending her days stuck in budget meetings instead — eventually she asked to go back to her old role, even at a lower salary, and she seems happier now than she ever was in between. I'd say promotion usually brings more money and more respect, but it also changes the job completely, and the skills that earned the promotion aren't always the ones the new position actually needs. Some people genuinely love managing others; a lot of people, it turns out, just loved the work itself.

    • FCeventually she asked to go back to her old role, even at a lower salary, and she seems happier now than she ever was in betweenThe phrase 'happier now than she ever was in between' adds a reflective comparison across time that the flatter 6.5 sentence doesn't attempt. It's a step toward the more polished closing evaluation of the 7.5 band, though it's still delivered as a fairly plain observation.短语‘happier now than she ever was in between’加入了一个跨越时间的反思性比较,这是6.5更平淡的句子不曾尝试的。这是朝着7.5分段更精致的结尾评价迈出的一步,不过它依然是以相当朴素的观察方式呈现的。
    • LRSome people genuinely love managing others; a lot of people, it turns out, just loved the work itself. The phrase 'it turns out' adds a natural, spoken discovery-tone that lower-band writing lacks, and 'genuinely love' is a more precise collocation than a plain 'really want'. It doesn't yet reach the idiomatic compactness of the 7.5 close, but it shows clear movement beyond safe, literal vocabulary.短语‘it turns out’加入了一种自然、口语化的‘发现’语气,这是低分段写作所缺乏的,而‘genuinely love’也是一个比朴素的‘really want’更精确的搭配。它还没有达到7.5分结尾那种地道的简练,但展现出明显超越安全、字面化词汇的进步。
    • GRAspending her days stuck in budget meetings insteadThis participle clause adds a subordinate structure onto the main sentence, more ambitious than the comma-chained sentence in the 6.5 band. It's still a single embedded clause, rather than the layered dash-and-semicolon construction the 7.5 band achieves.这个分词从句在主句上添加了一个从属结构,比6.5分段用逗号串联的句子更有野心。它仍然是一个单一的嵌入分句,而不是7.5分段所达到的那种分层的破折号加分号结构。
    7.5 分

This band opens with an evaluative claim ('our studio's own history proves it rather neatly') and closes with a crafted, generalising final sentence, using a long dash-linked sentence to hold the whole story together.这个分段以一个评价性的论断开头(‘our studio's own history proves it rather neatly’),并以一句精心构造的、概括性的结语收尾,用一个由破折号连接的长句子把整个故事串联在一起。

Not always, and our studio's own history proves it rather neatly. The best illustrator we had was promoted to run a team, drew nothing for an entire year, spent her days buried in budget meetings, and eventually asked to step back down to her old role at a lower salary — and she's visibly happier now than at any point in between. Promotion usually comes bundled with more money and more respect, but it's also, quietly, a completely different job, and the very skills that earned it are often not the ones it demands. Some people discover they genuinely love managing; plenty more discover they only ever loved the work. To my mind, a promotion is a change for the better only when it's chosen with open eyes, not simply accepted because turning it down felt unthinkable.

    • FCour studio's own history proves it rather neatlyThis opening frames the personal anecdote as evidence for an argument, a more sophisticated rhetorical move than the plain 'Not always, I think' of 6.5 or 'to be honest' of 7.0. It signals from the first line that the answer will be structured around proof rather than just opinion.这个开头把个人的小故事框定成了论证的证据,这是一种比6.5分朴素的‘Not always, I think’或7.0分的‘to be honest’更精妙的修辞手法。它从第一句话就示意,整个答案将围绕证据而不只是观点来构建。
    • LRa completely different job, and the very skills that earned it are often not the ones it demands'The very skills' and 'it demands' are more precise and slightly formal choices than the plainer 'the skills that got you promoted' used in the 6.5 band. This kind of exact, almost written-register phrasing is typical of what separates a 7.5 response from a simpler 6.5 one.‘The very skills’和‘it demands’是比6.5分段使用的更朴素的‘the skills that got you promoted’更精确、略微更正式的选择。这种精确、近乎书面语域的措辞,正是7.5分答案和更简单的6.5分答案之间的典型区别所在。
    • GRAa promotion is a change for the better only when it's chosen with open eyes, not simply accepted because turning it down felt unthinkableThis final sentence uses a balanced 'only when... not simply... because' structure across one long, controlled sentence, considerably more complex than the short conditional-style sentences in 6.5. The sentence-final balance here is what examiners associate with genuine flexibility, not just length.这个结尾句子在一个长长的、受控的句子里,使用了一个平衡的‘only when... not simply... because’结构,比6.5分中那种简短的条件式句子复杂得多。这里句尾的平衡感,正是考官会将其与真正的灵活性联系起来的东西,而不仅仅是长度。

I think small changes are good, but changing everything all the time is not. Mr Bảy has swum at the same beach at the same time for thirty years, and he is one of the calmest people I know. I used to change my morning routine every month, looking for the perfect one, and I never found it. A routine that stays the same saves your energy for important things. But if nothing ever changes, life can feel boring. I think the best way is to keep a stable frame, like sleep and exercise times, but change small details inside it.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI think small changes are good, but changing everything all the time is not. This opening states the whole position in one plain contrastive sentence, clear but blunt. The 7.0 version reaches the same contrast through 'honestly, I'd say', and 7.5 compresses it even further into a two-part opening line, showing a wider range of ways to signal the same stance.这个开头用一个朴素的对比句陈述了整个立场,清晰但直白。7.0版本通过‘honestly, I'd say’达到了同样的对比效果,7.5则把它压缩成一个两部分组成的开场句,展现出示意同一立场的更丰富的方式。
    • LRlooking for the perfect oneThis is plain, common phrasing for describing the search for an ideal routine. The 7.0 band upgrades it slightly to 'searching for the "perfect" routine', using quotation marks for a knowing tone, while 7.5 keeps the phrase but embeds it in a longer, more fluent sentence.这是描述寻找理想作息时使用的朴素、常见措辞。7.0分段把它稍微升级为‘searching for the "perfect" routine’,用引号来营造一种心照不宣的语气,而7.5分保留了这个短语,但把它嵌入了一个更长、更流畅的句子里。
    • GRAI used to change my morning routine every month, looking for the perfect one, and I never found it.This sentence chains ideas with commas and 'and', accurate but additive. The 7.5 version achieves the same content inside one longer sentence built around 'while', showing tighter subordination.这个句子用逗号和‘and’把想法串联起来,准确但只是累加。7.5版本在一个围绕‘while’构建的更长句子里达到了同样的内容,展现出更紧密的从属结构。

Uses the hedge 'honestly, I'd say' and links two contrasting people's routines in one longer sentence built with 'whereas'.使用了缓冲语‘honestly, I'd say’,并用‘whereas’把两个对比人物的作息连接进一个更长的句子里。

Honestly, I'd say small changes are good, but constant change isn't. Mr Bảy has swum at the same beach, at the same hour, for thirty years, and he's one of the calmest people I've ever met, whereas I used to rearrange my mornings every single month searching for the 'perfect' routine and never actually landed on one. A stable routine removes small decisions and frees your mind for things that actually matter, but a routine that never changes at all can start to feel like a cage. To be fair, the balance I've found works best is keeping the big structure fixed while changing small details inside it.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCHonestly, I'd say small changes are good, but constant change isn't.The hedge softens what would otherwise be a flat claim, matching the natural spoken tone this band aims for. It's a smaller move than the 7.5 opening, which drops the hedge for a more confident, almost aphoristic statement of the same contrast.这个缓冲语软化了本会是平淡论断的表述,符合这个分段所追求的自然口语语气。这比7.5分开头的手法要小——后者舍弃了缓冲语,转而使用一个更自信、近乎格言式的同样对比陈述。
    • LRsearching for the 'perfect' routineThe quotation marks around 'perfect' add a light, knowing irony that the plain 6.5 phrasing lacks. It doesn't yet reach the vivid framing embedded in 7.5's longer sentence, but it shows more control of tone.‘perfect’周围的引号增添了一丝轻巧、心照不宣的讽刺意味,是6.5分朴素的措辞所缺乏的。它还没有达到7.5分更长句子中所嵌入的那种生动框架,但展现出更强的语气掌控。
    • GRAMr Bảy has swum at the same beach, at the same hour, for thirty years, and he's one of the calmest people I've ever met, whereas I used to rearrange my mornings every single monthThe 'whereas' contrast links two people's routines inside one long sentence, a step up from the shorter, separated sentences in 6.5. It's still fairly linear compared with 7.5, which folds the same contrast into a single sentence using 'while' plus a further clause.‘whereas’对比在一个长句子里把两个人的作息连接了起来,比6.5更短、分开的句子前进了一步。它仍然相当线性,相比之下,7.5用‘while’加上一个进一步的分句,把同样的对比折叠进了一个句子。

Small changes, yes; constant change, no — that's the distinction I've come to trust. Mr Bảy has swum at the same beach at the same hour for thirty years and is one of the calmest people I've ever met, while I used to rearrange my mornings every month in search of some perfect routine and never once landed on it. A stable routine removes decisions and frees the mind for things that genuinely matter, yet a routine that never budges can quietly turn into a cage, and people stop noticing their own lives inside it. The balance I've settled on is a fixed frame — sleep, exercise, work hours — with small, deliberate variations inside it: a different route, a new dish, a walk instead of a scroll. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCSmall changes, yes; constant change, no — that's the distinction I've come to trust. This semicolon-and-dash opening states the whole position in a single compact line, more economical than the full sentence used at 6.5 or the hedge-led sentence at 7.0. It signals confident, practised fluency from the very first line.这个用分号和破折号构成的开头,在单一紧凑的一行里陈述了整个立场,比6.5使用的完整句子,或7.0以缓冲语引导的句子更简练。它从第一行开始就示意了自信、娴熟的流畅度。
    • LRa routine that never budges can quietly turn into a cage'Budges' and the cage metaphor are more vivid and idiomatic than the plain 'never changes' and 'can feel like a cage' used at the lower bands. This kind of figurative precision is typical of what lifts an answer from 7.0 to 7.5.‘Budges’(动摇、改变)和牢笼这个隐喻,比低分段使用的朴素说法‘never changes’和‘can feel like a cage’更生动、更地道。这种比喻式的精确度,正是把答案从7.0提升到7.5的典型标志。
    • GRAChange the details; protect the structure. This closing pair of short parallel imperatives, joined by a semicolon, is a deliberately crafted final flourish that neither lower band attempts — both end on a plain declarative sentence instead. The parallelism itself signals control, not just length.这一对简短、平行的祈使句,用分号连接,作为结尾,是一种刻意构造的最后修饰,是两个较低分段都没有尝试过的——它们都以一个朴素的陈述句结尾。这种平行结构本身,标志着掌控力,而不仅仅是长度。

I think it's mostly positive, but the speed has a cost for some people. The old swimmers at my beach learned to use QR payments easily. But when the city hospital moved its appointments online, some of them just stopped going until a family member could help them. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCI think it's mostly positive, but the speed has a cost for some people. This single opening sentence states the whole balanced position at once, clear but leaving the rest of the answer to unpack it in short separate steps. The 7.0 band reaches the same balance through 'on balance', and 7.5 through 'positive on balance, I'd argue', both slightly more natural framings.这个单独的开场句一次性陈述了整个平衡的立场,清晰,但把剩下的展开留给了答案后面短小、独立的步骤。7.0分段通过‘on balance’达到了同样的平衡,7.5则通过‘positive on balance, I'd argue’,两者都是略微更自然的表述方式。
    • LRsome of them just stopped goingThis is plain, functional narrative vocabulary. The higher bands keep the same basic story but frame the consequence a touch more precisely, as in 7.0's 'a few of them simply stopped going' and 7.5's 'several of them simply stopped going', sitting inside more fluent surrounding sentences.这是朴素、功能性的叙事词汇。高分段保留了同样的基本故事,但把后果表述得更精确一点,比如7.0的‘a few of them simply stopped going’和7.5的‘several of them simply stopped going’,被放置在更流畅的周围句子中。
    • GRABut it also destroys some jobs and skills before people can adapt. This is a short, accurate sentence with a simple 'before' clause. The 7.5 version expands the same idea into a longer sentence joined by 'and', packing in an extra consequence about society having no time to think.这是一个简短、准确的句子,带有一个简单的‘before’从句。7.5版本把同样的想法扩展成了一个用‘and’连接的更长句子,塞进了一个额外的后果——社会没有时间去思考。

On balance, I'd say it's positive, but honestly the speed itself has a real cost that falls on particular people. The retired swimmers at my beach have all learned QR payments quite happily, but when the city hospital moved its appointments online, a few of them simply stopped going until a relative could help them out. Fast change brings cheaper goods, better medicine and opportunities that didn't exist a decade ago, but it also destroys certain skills and jobs before people can adjust, and it gives society little time to think about whether it actually wanted each change. I'd say slightly slower, with more care for those left behind, would suit everyone better.

    • FCOn balance, I'd say it's positive, but honestly the speed itself has a real cost'On balance' and 'honestly' work together to frame this as a weighed, personal judgement rather than a flat statement, going beyond the plain 'I think it's mostly positive' at 6.5. It's a smaller rhetorical move than 7.5's 'Positive on balance, I'd argue', which compresses the same idea into fewer words.‘On balance’和‘honestly’共同把这个观点框定成了一个权衡过的、个人化的判断,而不是一个平淡的陈述,超越了6.5分朴素的‘I think it's mostly positive’。这比7.5的‘Positive on balance, I'd argue’这种修辞手法要小——后者用更少的词压缩了同样的想法。
    • LRquite happilyThis is a mildly more natural adverb choice than the plain 'easily' used at 6.5 to describe how the swimmers learned QR payments. It sits below the more precise 'cheerfully enough' used at 7.5, which adds a note of grudging admiration.这是一个比6.5用来描述泳客学会扫码支付所使用的朴素副词‘easily’稍微更自然一点的副词选择。它比7.5使用的更精确的‘cheerfully enough’要逊色一些——后者增添了一丝勉强的赞许意味。
    • GRAFast change brings cheaper goods, better medicine and opportunities that didn't exist a decade ago, but it also destroys certain skills and jobs before people can adjust, and it gives society little time to think about whether it actually wanted each change. This one long sentence chains three coordinated ideas with 'but' and 'and', more ambitious than the separated short sentences at 6.5. It's accurate throughout, though slightly less compact than the 7.5 version's equivalent sentence, which uses a dash-marked aside instead of a third 'and' clause.这一个长句子用‘but’和‘and’把三个并列的想法串联起来,比6.5分那种分开的短句更有野心。它全篇准确,不过比7.5版本对应的句子稍微不那么紧凑——后者用一个破折号标注的插入语代替了第三个‘and’分句。

Positive on balance, I'd argue, but the speed itself carries a cost that falls disproportionately on particular people. The retired swimmers at my beach have all picked up QR payments cheerfully enough, yet when the city hospital moved its appointments online, several of them simply stopped going until a relative could step in and help — the change itself was good; it was the pace that left them behind. Fast change brings cheaper goods, better medicine and opportunities that didn't exist a decade ago, but it also destroys skills and jobs before people can adjust, and it gives society almost no time to ask whether it actually wanted each particular change. My honest view is that slightly slower, paired with more care for those who can't keep up, would beat faster every time.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCPositive on balance, I'd argue, but the speed itself carries a cost that falls disproportionately on particular people. This opening compresses the balanced judgement into a single sentence with the hedge 'I'd argue' placed mid-sentence, a more fluent arrangement than the front-loaded hedges used at 6.5 and 7.0. It signals the argument's shape immediately, before any example is given.这个开头把平衡的判断压缩进了一个句子,缓冲语‘I'd argue’被放在句子中间,这是一种比6.5和7.0前置的缓冲语更流畅的安排。它在给出任何例子之前,就立刻示意了论证的形状。
    • LRfalls disproportionately on particular people'Disproportionately' is a precise, almost academic word choice that neither lower band attempts; 6.5 says simply 'has a cost for some people' and 7.0 says 'a real cost that falls on particular people'. This kind of exact vocabulary is a clear marker of the top band here.‘Disproportionately’是一个精确、近乎学术化的词汇选择,两个较低分段都没有尝试过;6.5只是说‘has a cost for some people’,7.0说‘a real cost that falls on particular people’。这种精确的词汇,正是此处最高分段的明显标志。
    • GRAthe change itself was good; it was the pace that left them behindThis semicolon-linked pair of clauses creates a neat, balanced contrast that neither lower band attempts in this compact a form; both instead spread the same idea across a longer, more loosely joined sentence. The balance itself is what signals the higher grammatical range.这对用分号连接的分句创造了一种整洁、平衡的对比,两个较低分段都没有以这种紧凑的形式尝试过;两者都是把同样的想法铺陈在一个更长、连接更松散的句子里。这种平衡感本身,正是更高语法范围的标志。

I don't think so, not completely. Mr Bảy ignores a lot of modern life — no social media, cash only, the same small café for years — but he belongs to this city more than anyone I know. For him, belonging comes from people and places, not from keeping up with everything new. But some change is hard to avoid. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCI don't think so, not completely. This short, plain denial states the position immediately but without much nuance. The higher bands intensify it slightly with 'more completely than almost anyone I know' at 7.0 and 7.5, adding 'completely' and 'almost' for more precise calibration.这是准确但朴素的比较性措辞。高分段用‘more completely than almost anyone I know’(在7.0和7.5都是如此)略微加强了这一点,加入了‘completely’和‘almost’以获得更精确的校准。
    • GRABut some change is hard to avoid. This is a short, simple sentence stating the concession. The 7.5 version instead builds the same concession into a longer sentence beginning 'That said, some adaptation is genuinely unavoidable', integrating the concession with its explanation rather than stating it as a bare fact.这是一个简短、简单的句子,陈述了让步。7.5版本则把同样的让步构建进了一个更长的句子,以‘That said, some adaptation is genuinely unavoidable’开头,把让步和它的解释整合在了一起,而不是作为一个赤裸的事实来陈述。

Softens the claim with 'Less than we usually assume, I'd say' and links the concession with 'that said' rather than a plain 'but'.用‘Less than we usually assume, I'd say’软化了论断,并用‘that said’而不是朴素的‘but’来连接让步。

Less than we usually assume, I'd say. Mr Bảy ignores most of modern life — no social media, cash wherever he can, the same café for decades — and yet he belongs to this city more completely than almost anyone I know, because for him belonging comes from people and places, not from keeping up with trends. That said, some adaptation really is unavoidable: if the whole society shifts to digital payments or online forms, refusing eventually means exclusion from ordinary life rather than some stylish personal choice. So I'd say people need to adapt to changes that touch practical life, and can safely ignore the ones that are only about fashion.

    • FCLess than we usually assume, I'd say. This hedge frames the answer as a considered correction of a common assumption, more sophisticated than the flat denial at 6.5. It's close to the 7.5 phrasing but 7.5 removes the comma-hedge entirely and lets 'honestly' do the same job mid-sentence, a slightly more fluent arrangement.这个缓冲语把答案框定成了对一个常见假设的深思熟虑式修正,比6.5那种平淡的否定更精妙。它接近7.5的措辞,但7.5完全去掉了逗号式的缓冲语,让‘honestly’在句子中间承担同样的功能,这是一种略微更流畅的安排。
    • LRbelongs to this city more completely than almost anyone I knowAdding 'completely' and 'almost' makes the comparison more carefully calibrated than the plain version at 6.5. It matches the 7.5 phrasing almost exactly, showing that at this level the gap between bands is more about sentence flow than single-word vocabulary.加入‘completely’和‘almost’让这个比较比6.5的朴素版本校准得更细致。它几乎完全匹配7.5的措辞,说明在这个水平上,分段之间的差距更多在于句子的流畅度,而不是单个词汇。
    • GRAif the whole society shifts to digital payments or online forms, refusing eventually means exclusion from ordinary life rather than some stylish personal choiceThis conditional clause followed by a 'rather than' contrast is more ambitious than the short, separate concession sentence at 6.5. It's very close in structure to the 7.5 version, though 7.5 tightens 'some stylish personal choice' to 'a stylish holdout', a more economical noun phrase.这个条件从句后面跟着一个‘rather than’对比,比6.5分那个简短、独立的让步句更有野心。它在结构上和7.5版本非常接近,不过7.5把‘some stylish personal choice’收紧成了‘a stylish holdout’,这是一个更简练的名词短语。

Less than we tend to assume, honestly. Mr Bảy ignores most of modern life — no social media, cash wherever he can manage it, the same café for decades — and belongs to this city more completely than almost anyone I know, because for him belonging comes from people and places, not from keeping up. That said, some adaptation is genuinely unavoidable: once a whole society moves to digital payments or online forms, refusing eventually means exclusion from ordinary life rather than a stylish holdout. So people need to adapt to the changes that carry practical life, and can safely ignore the ones that only carry fashion. If anything, the people who feel they don't belong are usually those forced to change against their will, not those who simply chose not to.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCLess than we tend to assume, honestly.Placing 'honestly' at the very end of this short opening line, rather than as a full hedge phrase up front, is a more fluent, spoken-sounding arrangement than the equivalent openings at 6.5 and 7.0. It reads as an aside rather than a formula.把‘honestly’放在这个简短开场句的最末尾,而不是作为一个完整的缓冲短语放在前面,这是一种比6.5和7.0对应开头更流畅、更具口语感的安排。它读起来像是一句插话,而不是一个公式化的套语。
    • LRexclusion from ordinary life rather than a stylish holdout'A stylish holdout' is a compact, idiomatic noun phrase that replaces the more literal 'a stylish personal choice' used at 7.0 and the plainer idea implied at 6.5. This kind of economical phrasing is a clear marker of the top band.‘A stylish holdout’是一个紧凑、地道的名词短语,取代了7.0使用的更字面化的‘a stylish personal choice’,以及6.5所暗示的更朴素的想法。这种简练的措辞,正是最高分段的明显标志。
    • GRAthe people who feel they don't belong are usually those forced to change against their will, not those who simply chose not toThis closing sentence balances two parallel 'those...' clauses against each other, a more ambitious structure than the plain declarative endings used at 6.5 and 7.0. The parallelism itself creates the sense of a considered, rounded conclusion.这个结尾句子在两个平行的‘those...’分句之间取得了平衡,这是一种比6.5和7.0使用的朴素陈述式结尾更有野心的结构。这种平行结构本身,创造出了一种经过深思熟虑、圆满收束的结论感。

Generally yes, I think. My colleagues in their twenties change their whole life every few months — a new diet, a new gym, a new plan for work. But the older swimmers at the beach get annoyed if even a bench is moved. Younger people have fewer fixed responsibilities and more energy to try new things. Older people have usually already found what works for them, so they prefer stability. But I don't think it's only about age. A young parent can be very routine-based too, and an older retired person can become adventurous again.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCGenerally yes, I think. This short opening states the answer plainly before any evidence is given. The 7.0 and 7.5 versions both add a clause linking the opinion directly to the personal evidence that follows, which creates smoother cohesion.这个简短的开头在给出任何证据之前,平淡地陈述了答案。7.0和7.5版本都加入了一个把观点和后面的个人证据直接连接起来的分句,创造出更顺畅的连贯性。
    • LRchange their whole life every few monthsThis is plain, general phrasing for the colleagues' behaviour. The higher bands sharpen it to 'redesign their lives every few months' (7.0) and 'redesign their lives every quarter' (7.5), using the more precise verb 'redesign' and, at 7.5, the more exact time expression.这是关于同事行为的朴素、笼统的措辞。高分段把它精炼为‘redesign their lives every few months’(7.0)和‘redesign their lives every quarter’(7.5),使用了更精确的动词‘redesign’,7.5还使用了更精确的时间表达。
    • GRABut I don't think it's only about age. This is a short, simple sentence introducing the final qualification. Younger people tend to have fewer fixed commitments, more energy for novelty, and a sense that the 'right' routine is still out there waiting to be found. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCand I've seen both ends of itThis phrase links the opinion directly to personal experience, creating a smoother transition into the examples than the plain 'I think' at 6.5. It's almost identical to the 7.5 phrasing 'and I've watched both ends of the spectrum up close', which is slightly more vivid.这个短语把观点和个人经验直接联系了起来,比6.5朴素的‘I think’创造出更顺畅的过渡,进入例子部分。它和7.5的措辞‘and I've watched both ends of the spectrum up close’几乎相同,后者略微更生动。
    • LRredesign their lives every few months'Redesign' is a more precise, almost professional verb choice than the plain 'change their whole life' at 6.5. The 7.5 band uses the identical verb but with the more exact 'every quarter'.‘Redesign’是一个比6.5朴素的‘change their whole life’更精确、近乎专业化的动词选择。7.5分段使用了相同的动词,但配上了更精确的‘every quarter’。
    • GRAwhile the older swimmers at the beach get visibly annoyed if the council so much as moves a benchThe 'while' clause packs the contrast between the two groups into one sentence, more ambitious than the separate sentences at 6.5. It is very close to the 7.5 version, which extends the same sentence further with an additional clause about the 'right' routine.‘while’从句把两个群体之间的对比塞进了一个句子,比6.5那种独立的句子更有野心。它非常接近7.5版本,后者用一个关于‘正确’作息的额外分句进一步延展了同一个句子。

Younger people simply have fewer fixed commitments, more energy for novelty, and a lingering sense that the perfect routine is still out there to be discovered. Older people have usually already found what works and rightly value the stability that comes with it. But it isn't purely about age; it's about how much of your life has already settled. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCI've watched both ends of the spectrum up closeThis phrase frames the whole answer as drawn from direct, close observation, slightly more vivid than the near-identical 7.0 phrase 'I've seen both ends of it'. It sets up the extended contrast sentence that follows more confidently than the shorter openings at the lower bands.这个短语把整个答案框定为来自直接、近距离的观察,比7.0几乎相同的短语‘I've seen both ends of it’略微更生动。它比低分段更短的开头更自信地为后面延展的对比句做好了铺垫。
    • LRa lingering sense that the perfect routine is still out there to be discovered'Lingering sense' and 'to be discovered' are more literary, precise choices than the plainer 'a sense that the right routine is still out there' used at 7.0. This kind of layered descriptive phrasing is typical of the top band.‘Lingering sense’和‘to be discovered’是比7.0使用的更朴素的‘a sense that the right routine is still out there’更具文学性、更精确的选择。这种有层次的描述性措辞,是最高分段的典型特征。
    • GRAA young parent can be as routine-bound as any pensioner, just as a retired person with time on their hands can become surprisingly adventurous again. This closing sentence balances two parallel 'as... as' and 'just as... can' clauses against each other, more ambitious than the simpler two-sentence version at 6.5. It shows you that your own way of life is just one choice among many. My cousin worked in Australia for two years, and now he thinks our meetings are too long and our silences too short. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCHe can't stop noticing it.This short sentence adds a small personal detail about the cousin but stands somewhat disconnected from the sentence before it. The 7.0 and 7.5 versions instead fold the same idea directly into the sentence about the cousin, creating tighter cohesion.这个简短的句子加入了一个关于表哥的小小个人细节,但和前面的句子有些脱节。7.0和7.5版本则把同样的想法直接融入了关于表哥的句子,创造出更紧密的连贯性。

Honestly, it shows you that what feels 'normal' to you is really just one choice among many. My cousin came back after two years working in Australia and now finds our meetings too long and our silences too short, and he genuinely can't unsee it — he's realised the way his own country works is just one option among several. Working abroad also breaks stereotypes in both directions: the foreigners you meet become individuals, and your own people start to look a little stranger from a distance. It builds a certain humility too, since for a while you're the one who doesn't understand the local rules. I'd say it tends to make people both more critical of home and more grateful for it at once.

    • FCand he genuinely can't unsee itFolding this reaction directly into the sentence about the cousin, rather than giving it a separate sentence as at 6.5, creates smoother cohesion. It matches the 7.5 phrasing closely, though 7.5 adds a further clause for extra weight.把这种反应直接融入关于表哥的句子,而不是像6.5那样给它一个独立的句子,创造出更顺畅的连贯性。它和7.5的措辞十分接近,不过7.5加入了一个进一步的分句以增添分量。
    • LRcan't unsee itThis idiom is more natural and vivid than the plain 'can't stop noticing it' used at 6.5. It shows a wider range of everyday idiomatic language than the safer, literal phrasing of the lower band.这个习语比6.5使用的朴素说法‘can't stop noticing it’更自然、更生动。它展现出比低分段更安全、字面化的措辞更宽广的日常地道语言范围。
    • GRAhe's realised the way his own country works is just one option among severalThis is a clause introduced by 'that' embedded after 'realised', a moderately complex structure. The 7.5 version achieves something similar but inserts an extra adverb mid-sentence, showing slightly more flexible placement of ideas within one sentence.这是一个由‘that’引出、嵌套在‘realised’之后的分句,是一种复杂度适中的结构。7.5版本达到了类似的效果,但在句子中间插入了一个额外的副词,展现出在一个句子内部对想法安排略微更灵活的位置。

It shows you that what feels normal is really just a choice, and once you see that, you can't unsee it. My cousin came back from two years working in Australia and now finds our meetings too long and our silences too short — he's learned, uncomfortably, that the way his own country operates is one option among many, not the natural order of things. Working abroad also breaks stereotypes in both directions: the foreigners around you become individuals, and your own people look faintly stranger from a distance. It builds a quiet humility too, because for a while you're the one who doesn't understand the rules. And, rather usefully, it tends to make people simultaneously more critical of home and more grateful for it — an uncomfortable but valuable combination.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCand once you see that, you can't unsee itThis clause builds directly on the abstract opening idea before the example is even introduced, creating a tighter logical chain than the lower bands, which introduce the abstract idea and the idiom separately. It shows the answer's structure is planned as a whole.这个分句在例子还没被引入之前,就直接建立在了抽象的开场想法之上,创造出比低分段更紧密的逻辑链条——低分段是分别引入抽象想法和习语的。它展现出这份答案的结构是作为一个整体被规划出来的。
    • LRnot the natural order of thingsThis is a more abstract, literary phrase than anything attempted at the lower bands, which stop at 'just one option among many/several'. This extra contrastive phrase shows a wider vocabulary range being used for genuine rhetorical effect, not just decoration.这是一个比低分段尝试过的任何表达都更抽象、更具文学性的短语——低分段停留在‘just one option among many/several’。这个额外的对比性短语展现出更宽广的词汇范围被用于真正的修辞效果,而不仅仅是装饰。
    • GRAan uncomfortable but valuable combinationThis compact final noun phrase closes the answer with a two-adjective evaluative summary, a more economical device than the plainer closing sentences at 6.5 and 7.0, which state the same idea across a fuller clause. The compression itself signals higher fluency.这个紧凑的结尾名词短语,用一个双形容词的评价性总结为答案收尾,这是一种比6.5和7.0更朴素的结尾句子更简练的手法——后两者是把同样的想法用一个更完整的分句表达出来的。这种压缩本身,标志着更高的流畅度。

People tend to make the same changes every year, I think. Every January, the beach fills with new people who promise to swim every morning, but by March most of them have stopped. Exercise is probably the most common change, and also the one people give up on fastest. Diet comes next — less sugar, more vegetables. Then sleep, usually a promise to go to bed earlier. People also change their commute when they change jobs, and their evenings when they get tired of their phone. I've noticed the changes that actually last are usually connected to a person or a place, not just willpower.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCDiet comes next — less sugar, more vegetables. The dash here introduces a short, listed example, which is clear but minimal. The higher bands use the same dash device but attach it to longer surrounding sentences, as in 7.5's version, showing more developed context around the same technique.这里的破折号引出了一个简短、罗列式的例子,清晰但极简。高分段使用了相同的破折号手段,但把它附加在更长的周围句子上,比如7.5版本,展现出围绕同一手法更成熟的语境。
    • LRthe one people give up on fastestThis is plain, functional phrasing for describing abandoned resolutions. The 7.0 band tightens it to 'the most commonly abandoned one', and 7.5 to 'just as reliably the most commonly abandoned', both more precise and less colloquial.这是用来描述被放弃的决心时使用的朴素、功能性措辞。7.0分段把它收紧为‘the most commonly abandoned one’,7.5则收紧为‘just as reliably the most commonly abandoned’,两者都更精确、更不口语化。

The 7.5 version restructures the same content around a dash and a conditional framing device that this band doesn't attempt.这个句子用‘but’连接了两个想法,准确但简单。7.5版本围绕一个破折号和一个条件式的框架手法,重新组织了同样的内容,这是这个分段没有尝试过的。

Honestly, it's often the same changes, year after year. Every January the beach fills with new faces who've resolved to swim at dawn, and by March it's back to the same regulars — exercise really is the most common routine change, and probably the most commonly abandoned one too. Diet comes next, with the usual promises of less sugar and more vegetables, followed by sleep, usually a vow to go to bed earlier. People also tend to change their commute when they change jobs, and their evenings when they get sick of their phone. I'd say the changes that actually stick are the ones tied to a person or a place, rather than to willpower alone.

It's less crafted than the 7.5 opening, which adds a conditional frame.结尾重复的时间短语‘year after year’,以一种节奏感强化了这一点,这是超越6.5朴素开头的一个小文体点缀。它不如7.5分开头那样精心构造——后者加入了一个条件式框架。
    • LRthe most commonly abandoned one tooThis is a more precise, slightly formal phrasing than the 6.5 band's 'the one people give up on fastest'. It is nearly identical to the 7.5 phrasing, showing that at this level the two top bands often share vocabulary but differ in surrounding sentence construction.这是一种比6.5分段的‘the one people give up on fastest’更精确、略微更正式的措辞。它和7.5的措辞几乎相同,说明在这个水平上,两个最高分段经常共享词汇,但在周围句子的构造上有所不同。
    • GRAexercise really is the most common routine change, and probably the most commonly abandoned one tooThis sentence coordinates two related claims with 'and', a step up from the two separate sentences used for the same content at 6.5. It's slightly less integrated than the 7.5 version, which achieves a similar effect using a colon rather than 'and'.这个句子用‘and’把两个相关的论断并列了起来,比6.5用来表达同样内容的两个独立句子前进了一步。它比7.5版本略微不那么整合——后者用冒号而不是‘and’达到了类似的效果。

Opens with a conditional frame ('if my local beach is anything to go by') and closes with a reflective generalisation about what changes actually stick.以一个条件式框架开头(‘if my local beach is anything to go by’),并以一句关于哪些改变真正能坚持下来的反思性概括收尾。

The same ones, pretty much every year, if my local beach is anything to go by. Each January it fills with new faces who've resolved to swim at dawn, and by March it's back down to the regulars — exercise is easily the most common routine change, and just as reliably the most commonly abandoned. Diet runs a close second: less sugar, more vegetables, no eating after eight. Sleep follows, usually as a vague promise to turn in earlier. People also shuffle their commute when they change jobs, their mornings once they have children, and their evenings once they finally tire of their phone. If there's a pattern worth noticing, it's that the changes which actually stick tend to be anchored to a person or a place — like the beach itself — rather than to willpower alone.

    • FCif my local beach is anything to go byThis conditional framing device signals that the observation is drawn from limited personal evidence, a more self-aware move than the flat generalisations at 6.5 and 7.0. It adds a layer of honest hedging that neither lower band attempts in this form.这个条件式的框架手法示意,这个观察是从有限的个人证据中得出的,这是一种比6.5和7.0那种平淡的概括更具自我觉察的手法。它增添了一层诚实的缓冲,是两个较低分段都不曾以这种形式尝试过的。
    • LRshuffle their commute when they change jobs'Shuffle' is a more vivid, slightly figurative verb than the plain 'change their commute' used at 6.5 and 7.0. This kind of small figurative upgrade across several verbs is typical of what separates 7.5 from the bands below.‘Shuffle’是一个比6.5和7.0使用的朴素说法‘change their commute’更生动、略带比喻色彩的动词。这种在多个动词上进行的小型比喻式升级,正是把7.5和以下分段区分开来的典型特征。
    • GRAIf there's a pattern worth noticing, it's that the changes which actually stick tend to be anchored to a person or a place — like the beach itself — rather than to willpower alone. This closing sentence uses a conditional frame, a relative clause and a dash-marked aside all within one sentence, considerably more complex than the plainer closing sentences at 6.5 and 7.0. The layering of structures is what marks the higher band.这个结尾句子在一个句子里同时使用了一个条件式框架、一个关系从句和一个破折号标注的插入语,比6.5和7.0更朴素的结尾句子复杂得多。这种结构上的分层,正是更高分段的标志。
  9. 9. Why are many people resistant to changes in society?

States the cause plainly ('I think it's because change usually takes something away before it gives something back') and lists further reasons with 'People also resist because...'.平铺直叙地陈述了原因(‘I think it's because change usually takes something away before it gives something back’),并用‘People also resist because...’罗列了更多的理由。

I think it's because change usually takes something away before it gives something back. When the old market in my parents' area of Hue was rebuilt, they were not really against the new building. They were sad about losing forty years of knowing exactly where everything and everyone was. People also resist change because they were disappointed before — past changes were promised as improvements but weren't. And sometimes the benefits go to other people while ordinary people deal with the disruption. So resistance often looks like stubbornness, but it is really a kind of loss.

    • FCPeople also resist change because they were disappointed before'Also' plainly signals a new, additional reason, which is clear but mechanical. The higher bands replace this with smoother phrasing like 'People also resist because they've been burned before', keeping the same connector but embedding more natural idiom around it.‘Also’直白地示意了一个新的、额外的理由,清晰但机械化。高分段用更顺畅的措辞替换了这一点,比如‘People also resist because they've been burned before’,保留了同样的连接词,但在周围嵌入了更自然的习语。
    • LRthey were disappointed beforeThis is plain, general phrasing for the idea of being let down by past change. The higher bands both upgrade this to the more idiomatic 'they've been burned before', a vivid figurative expression this band avoids.这是关于被过去的改变辜负这一想法的朴素、笼统措辞。高分段都把它升级为更地道的‘they've been burned before’,这是一个生动的比喻性表达,这个分段避免使用它。
    • GRAThey were sad about losing forty years of knowing exactly where everything and everyone was. This is a plain, single-clause sentence. The 7.5 version instead builds the same content into a longer sentence using a semicolon to link two contrasting halves within one sentence.这是一个朴素的单分句句子。7.5版本则把同样的内容构建进了一个更长的句子,用一个分号把两个对比的部分连接在了一个句子内。
    7.0 分

Uses the idiom 'they've been burned before' and closes with the reflective final line 'Understanding that makes resistance look less like ignorance and more like memory.'使用了习语‘they've been burned before’,并以反思性的结语——‘Understanding that makes resistance look less like ignorance and more like memory.’——收尾。

I'd say it's because change usually takes something away before it gives something back. When the old market in my parents' district of Hue was redeveloped, they honestly weren't against the new building itself — they were grieving forty years of knowing exactly where everything and everyone was. Resistance is often loss disguised as stubbornness, if you think about it. People also resist because they've been burned before, when previous changes were promised as improvements and simply weren't, and because the benefits tend to go to others while the disruption lands squarely on them. Understanding that makes resistance look less like ignorance and more like memory.

    • FCif you think about itThis aside invites the listener to reconsider the claim just made, adding a reflective, conversational tone the plainer 6.5 version lacks. It's a smaller move than the fuller closing reflection both this band and 7.5 share at the very end of the answer.这个插入语邀请听者重新审视刚刚提出的论断,增添了一种反思性、对话式的语气,这是更朴素的6.5版本所缺乏的。这比这个分段和7.5在答案末尾共享的那种更完整的结尾反思要小一些。
    • LRthey've been burned beforeThis idiom for having been let down by past experience is more vivid and natural than the plain 6.5 phrasing 'they were disappointed before'. It is shared with the 7.5 version, showing that idiomatic density here matters as much as originality.这个表示被过去的经历辜负的习语,比6.5朴素的措辞‘they were disappointed before’更生动、更自然。它和7.5版本共享,说明这里习语的密度和独创性同样重要。
    • GRAResistance is often loss disguised as stubbornness, if you think about it.The metaphor 'loss disguised as stubbornness' packed into a single clause, followed by a reflective tag, is more ambitious than the plain declarative sentences used at 6.5 for similar content. It matches the 7.5 version's core metaphor closely but without the additional layered reasons that follow it there.隐喻‘loss disguised as stubbornness’被塞进了一个单一的分句里,后面跟着一个反思性的标签,这比6.5针对类似内容使用的朴素陈述句更有野心。它和7.5版本的核心隐喻十分接近,但没有后者那里紧跟着的额外分层理由。
    7.5 分

Opens directly with the causal claim and closes with two additional, more abstract reasons — identity and fatigue — before the final reflective line.直接以因果论断开头,并在最后的反思性结语之前,加入了两个额外的、更抽象的理由——身份认同和疲惫。

Because change usually takes something away before it gives anything back, in my experience. When the old market in my parents' district of Hue was redeveloped, they weren't really against the new building at all; they were grieving forty years of knowing exactly where everything and everyone was. Resistance, more often than not, is loss disguised as stubbornness. People also resist because they've been burned before — earlier changes were sold as improvements and simply weren't — and because the benefits tend to land on others while the disruption lands squarely on them. Some resistance is pure identity, since a change in society can feel like a quiet judgement on how you've lived; some of it is just plain fatigue. Seen this way, resistance looks less like ignorance and more like memory.

    • FCSeen this way, resistance looks less like ignorance and more like memory. This closing sentence explicitly signals a reframing of the whole answer ('Seen this way'), a more deliberate rhetorical close than the similar but less explicitly framed ending at 7.0. It ties the whole answer together as a single argument rather than a list of reasons.这个结尾句子明确示意了对整个答案的重新框定(‘Seen this way’),这是一种比7.0类似但没有明确框定的结尾更用心的修辞收尾。它把整个答案作为一个单一的论证串联在了一起,而不是一份理由清单。
    • LRSome resistance is pure identityUsing 'identity' as a one-word abstract category is a more economical and precise move than a fuller explanatory phrase would be, and neither lower band introduces this concept at all. It shows a wider range of abstract vocabulary being deployed to add a genuinely new point, not just reword existing ones.用‘identity’这一个词来作为一个抽象类别,这比一个更完整的解释性短语要更简练、更精确,而且两个较低分段都完全没有引入这个概念。它展现出更宽广的抽象词汇范围被用来增添一个真正全新的观点,而不只是重新措辞已有的观点。
    • GRAearlier changes were sold as improvements and simply weren't — and because the benefits tend to land on others while the disruption lands squarely on themThis sentence links a dash-marked aside to a further 'because' clause, building a longer, more layered structure than the equivalent single 'because' clause used at 6.5 and 7.0. The repetition of 'land(s)' across both halves also creates a subtle internal echo neither lower band attempts.这个句子把一个破折号标注的插入语和一个进一步的‘because’分句连接了起来,构建出一个比6.5和7.0使用的对应单一‘because’分句更长、更有层次的结构。‘land(s)’这个词在两个部分中的重复,也创造出一种微妙的内部呼应,是两个较低分段都没有尝试过的。
