The answer relies on plain time markers ('very early in the morning, around six') and a simple final cause-effect sentence ('I always feel calmer afterwards, and I think that's why I keep going back'), giving clear but modest development typical of Band 6.5.回答依赖简单的时间标记('一大早,大约六点')和一个简单的因果收尾句('之后我总觉得更平静,我想这就是我一直回去的原因'),展现出清晰但较为朴素的展开方式,是Band 6.5的典型特征。

The quiet place I like going to is a small bench along the Han River, not far from my apartment, near Dragon Bridge.

I usually go there very early in the morning, around six, before I go to work, or sometimes late at night when I can't sleep. At those times almost nobody is around.

When I'm there, I don't really do much. Sometimes I bring a coffee and just sit and look at the water, or I watch the fishermen who come out early with their small boats. Sometimes I just sit with my phone away and think about the day ahead, or about nothing in particular.

I like going there because my life is usually quite busy and noisy. I work in an open-plan office all day with people talking around me, and my apartment building has a lot of families in it, so it's never really silent there either. That bench by the river is one of the only places I can be completely alone with my thoughts. It only takes fifteen minutes, but I always feel calmer afterwards, and I think that's why I keep going back.

  • FCI usually go there very early in the morning, around six, before I go to work, or sometimes late at night when I can't sleep. The sentence lists two alternative time slots ("early morning... or sometimes late at night") joined by "or," each with a brief clarifying detail (before work; can't sleep), moving through the cue-card prompt directly without added interpretation -- this is the clear-but-simple, point-by-point development that matches Band 6.5's "answer directly, stay on topic" instruction rather than the more reflective linking a higher band would add between the two time slots.句子用"or"连接列出两个可替换的时间段("early morning... or sometimes late at night"),各自附带一个简短的说明(上班前;睡不着),直接按照卡片提示往下走,不加额外阐述——这是一种清晰但简单、逐点推进的发展方式,契合Band 6.5"直接作答、紧扣主题"的要求,而不是更高band会在两个时间段之间添加的那种反思性衔接。
  • LRI don't really do much"Don't really do much" is a vague, high-frequency hedge rather than a more specific description of the speaker's actual quiet activities, which the following sentences do supply, like watching fishermen. This deliberate plainness, using common words rather than reaching for something like "unwind" or "switch off," is exactly the restrained vocabulary the Band 6.5 lexical descriptor calls for."Don't really do much"是一种模糊、高频的缓和说法,而不是对说话者实际安静活动的具体描述——后面的句子确实提供了这些内容,比如看渔民工作。这种刻意的朴素,用常见词而不是去找像"unwind"或"switch off"这样的表达,正是Band 6.5词汇描述所要求的那种克制的词汇。
  • GRAIt only takes fifteen minutes, but I always feel calmer afterwards, and I think that's why I keep going back.Three independent clauses are strung together with the coordinators "but" and "and" rather than any subordinating structure -- a higher band might use "which is why I keep going back" as a relative clause instead. This coordination-over-subordination pattern is precisely the "mostly simple sentences plus a few basic complex ones" the Band 6.5 grammar target describes, still accurate and easy to follow despite the limited grammatical variety.三个独立分句用并列连词"but"和"and"串联在一起,而没有使用任何从属结构——更高band的答案可能会用"which is why I keep going back"这样的关系从句来代替。这种偏重并列而非从属的模式,正是Band 6.5语法标准所描述的"以简单句为主、外加少量基础复合句",虽然语法多样性有限,但依然准确、易于理解。

The answer develops the story with one concrete turning point (getting caught in the rain and finding the garden) and closes on a small reflective detail about the monk, giving it more narrative shape than the 6.5 answer while staying less layered than the 7.5 version.回答通过一个具体的转折点(被雨困住并发现花园)来展开故事,并以关于那位僧人的一个小小的反思性细节收尾,比Band 6.5的答案更具叙事结构,但层次感仍不及Band 7.5版本。

There's a tiny garden tucked behind one of the pagodas at Marble Mountains, just south of Da Nang, that I'd call my quiet place. The mountains are normally packed — tour groups, souvenir stalls, steps everywhere — but past the main pagoda there's a narrow opening in a wall that looks, at first glance, like it goes nowhere. Through it is a space no bigger than a tennis court, with a stone bench and a pond half covered in lily pads.

I stumbled on it purely by chance, about two years back. I'd set out for a beach run when the sky suddenly opened up, so I ducked into the mountains for cover and just kept drifting further from the crowds until I ended up there. Standing in that garden, completely drenched, I noticed the strangest thing — total silence. The stone blocks every bit of traffic noise from the road below, and my phone couldn't even find a signal, which felt oddly wonderful at the time.

These days I try to get there twice a month, always early on a Sunday, before the first tour bus shows up. I don't do much once I'm there — sit for an hour, maybe write something, maybe not — and then head home.

What draws me back is really about everything the place doesn't have. Between a job that never stops pinging for attention, an apartment block full of neighbours, and cafés that now play music right onto the beach, silence has become hard to find anywhere else in my life. I've noticed my thinking is sharper for a day or two after visiting, probably just because nothing's competing for my attention there. There's an elderly monk who tends the pond sometimes, and the one time our eyes met, he gave a small nod. It's a tiny thing, but I still think about it now and then.

  • FCI stumbled on it purely by chance, about two years back.Opening with "I stumbled on it purely by chance" promises a small narrative — how the place was found — rather than moving straight into a description of what it's like, and the specific time marker "about two years back" grounds that story in real time. Signalling a mini-story like this, and then actually delivering it in the sentences that follow (the sudden rain, ducking for cover), is the kind of narrative structuring that lifts an answer above the fact-list pattern typical of Band 6.5, matching Band 7.0's expectation of one short concrete example developed with a clear thread.
  • LRwhich felt oddly wonderful at the time"Oddly wonderful" pairs a slightly unexpected qualifier ("oddly") with a strong positive adjective, capturing the specific, faintly paradoxical feeling of losing phone signal — a detail more precise than a generic word like "nice" or "good." A Band 6.5 answer would likely use exactly that generic word, so this small stretch into a more particular emotional register is the flexible vocabulary choice Band 7.0 lexical resource is built around, without going as far as a genuinely idiomatic phrase."Oddly wonderful"把一个略显意外的修饰词("oddly")和一个语气强烈的正面形容词搭配在一起,捕捉到失去手机信号那种具体、略带悖论意味的感受——这个细节比"nice"或"good"这样笼统的词更精准。6.5分的答案很可能正是会用这类笼统的词,因此这一小步迈向更特定的情绪表达,正是7.0分词汇资源所依赖的那种灵活用词选择,虽然还没有达到真正习语化表达的程度。
  • GRAStanding in that garden, completely drenched, I noticed the strangest thing — total silence. The sentence opens with a participial phrase ("Standing in that garden, completely drenched") before the main clause, delaying the subject and verb to build a small moment of scene-setting first. Varying the sentence opening this way, rather than defaulting to subject-first order throughout, is a genuinely controlled grammatical choice that a Band 6.5 answer would be unlikely to attempt, and it's exactly the kind of comfortable structural variety — not yet the denser layering of Band 7.5 — that Band 7.0 grammar targets.这句话在主句之前先用一个分词短语开头("Standing in that garden, completely drenched"),延迟主语和动词的出现,先营造出一个小小的场景铺垫时刻。以这种方式变化句子的开头,而不是全程默认采用主语在前的语序,是一种真正受控的语法选择,6.5分的答案不太可能尝试,而这正是7.0分语法所瞄准的那种从容的结构多样性——还没到7.5分那种更密集的层叠程度。

The answer closes with the understated, slightly wry observation that a single nod from the monk is 'the extent of our relationship, and it's one of the ones I value most', a reflective, idiomatic move typical of Band 7.5.回答以一种含蓄、略带诙谐的观察收尾——僧人的一个点头就是'我们关系的全部,却是我最珍视的关系之一',这种反思性、地道的表达方式是Band 7.5的典型特征。

The quiet place I'd describe is a small garden behind one of the pagodas at Marble Mountains, on the southern edge of Da Nang. The mountains themselves are a tourist site — steps, caves, tour groups — but if you walk past the main pagoda and through a gap in a wall that most people take for a dead end, there's a garden the size of a tennis court, with a stone bench, a pond that's mostly lily pads, and a monk who occasionally waters things and never speaks to anyone.

I found it by accident about two years ago. I'd planned a long run along the beach, the rain came in sideways, and I ducked into the mountains for shelter and kept walking away from the crowds. I remember standing in that garden, soaked, and realising that I couldn't hear the city at all — the rock blocks the road noise completely — and that my phone had no signal, which at the time felt like a small miracle.

I go about twice a month now, usually early on a Sunday before the tour buses arrive. I sit on the bench for an hour, sometimes with a notebook and sometimes with nothing, and then I go home.

Why I like it is mostly about what's absent. My work is a screen that never stops asking for something, my apartment is in a tower of two hundred families, and even the beach has music from the cafés now. That garden is the only place in my life where nothing wants my attention. I've noticed I make better decisions in the days after I've been — the kind of thinking that only happens when there's no input at all. The monk once nodded at me. That's the extent of our relationship, and it's one of the ones I value most.

  • GRAthat most people take for a dead endThe relative clause 'that most people take for a dead end' is embedded directly after 'a gap in a wall,' adding a specific, almost narrative detail about how this hidden garden is overlooked, rather than explaining it in a separate sentence like 'Most people think it's a dead end, but it's not.' That kind of economical embedding, where a whole extra idea is folded into a noun phrase rather than given its own clause, is the varied complex grammar the Band 7.5 target rewards, since it keeps the sentence moving without sacrificing detail. It also builds anticipation before the reveal of the garden itself, mimicking the surprise the speaker describes feeling on first discovering the place.定语从句"that most people take for a dead end"直接嵌在"a gap in a wall"之后,增添了一个具体的、近乎叙事性的细节,说明这座隐蔽花园是如何被大多数人忽略的,而不是另起一句解释,比如"Most people think it's a dead end, but it's not."这种把一整层额外含义折叠进名词短语、而不是单独成句的简洁嵌入方式,正是7.5分所看重的多样化复杂语法,因为它能在不牺牲细节的情况下让句子保持流畅推进。它同时也在花园本身被揭晓之前营造出悬念,呼应了说话者描述自己第一次发现这个地方时那种惊喜之情。
  • LRnothing wants my attentionThe personification of 'attention' being wanted is a natural figurative touch rather than plain description, characteristic of Band 7.5 lexical resource.把'注意力'拟人化为被'索取'的对象,是一种自然的修辞手法,而非平铺直叙的描述,体现出Band 7.5的词汇运用特点。
  • FCThat's the extent of our relationship, and it's one of the ones I value most. The sentence takes a minimal fact — one nod from a monk who never speaks — and elevates it to something valued highly, creating a gentle irony between how little actually happened and how much the speaker claims to value it. That kind of understated, self-aware evaluation, openly acknowledging the modesty of the 'relationship' while still asserting its importance, is the developed reflective point the Band 7.5 coherence target rewards over a plainer closing statement like 'I really enjoy visiting this quiet garden.' It also closes the whole answer on the theme introduced earlier about wanting a place where 'nothing wants my attention.'这句话把一个极其微小的事实——一位从不开口的僧人的一次点头——提升为一件被高度珍视的事情,在"实际发生的事有多么少"与"说话者声称自己有多么珍视它"之间制造出一种温和的反讽。这种低调而带有自我觉察的评价,一方面坦然承认这段"关系"的分量微不足道,一方面又坚持它的重要性,正是7.5分连贯性标准所看重的、经过充分展开的反思性论点,胜过像"I really enjoy visiting this quiet garden."这样平淡的收尾句。它同时也用前文提到过的那个主题——想要一个"nothing wants my attention"的地方——来收束整个回答。

The plain closing sentence 'Most people do not notice it becomes costly for harder work' states the final point directly, with basic vocabulary.平实的结尾句“Most people do not notice it becomes costly for harder work”,用基础词汇直接陈述了最后一点。

For many people, background noise keeps other thoughts away. A colleague of mine cannot design without a lo-fi playlist, and when I asked why, she said silence lets her worries in — the music fills the part of her mind that would otherwise wander. Some people grew up in busy households and find quiet strange. Music can also mark time, since a certain playlist means work, and the brain learns that cue. For repetitive tasks, noise makes boredom easier to bear. Most people do not notice it becomes costly for harder work.

    • LRthe music fills the part of her mind that would otherwise wanderPlain, functional vocabulary. The 7.0 and 7.5 versions use the more precise verb 'occupies', a slightly more formal and specific choice than the generic 'fills'.平实、功能性的词汇。7.0和7.5分版本使用了更精确的动词“occupies”,比笼统的“fills”更正式、更具体一些。
    • GRASome people grew up in busy households and find quiet strangeA short, flat sentence. The 7.5 version intensifies this with 'grew up in genuinely busy households and find quiet almost unnatural as adults', adding precision about when the discomfort shows.一个简短、平淡的句子。7.5分版本用“grew up in genuinely busy households and find quiet almost unnatural as adults”来强化它,增加了关于这种不适感何时显现的精确度。
    • FCMost people do not notice it becomes costly for harder workA vague closing claim. The 7.0 and 7.5 versions sharpen this to 'quietly costly for anything hard, where the attention it eats would otherwise have been useful', explaining exactly what the cost is.一个模糊的结尾论断。7.0和7.5分版本把它精炼为“quietly costly for anything hard, where the attention it eats would otherwise have been useful”,精确地解释了这个代价究竟是什么。

The colon in 'Music can also mark time and mood: this playlist means work' introduces a small explanatory example within the same sentence, rather than starting a new one.“Music can also mark time and mood: this playlist means work”中的冒号,在同一个句子里引出了一个简短的解释性例子,而不是另起一句。

For a lot of people, honestly, background noise keeps other thoughts out. A colleague of mine can't design without a lo-fi playlist, and when I asked why, she said silence lets her worries in — the music occupies the part of her mind that would otherwise wander. Some people grew up in busy households and find quiet genuinely unnatural. Music can also mark time and mood: this playlist means work, and the brain learns the cue. For repetitive tasks, noise makes the boredom bearable, to be fair. What most people don't notice is that it's harmless for routine work and quietly costly for anything hard.

    为什么是这个分数

    • LRthe music occupies the part of her mind that would otherwise wander'Occupies' is a more precise, active verb than 6.5's plainer 'fills', suggesting the music takes deliberate possession of that mental space.“Occupies”是一个比6.5分更平淡的“fills”更精确、更主动的动词,暗示音乐是刻意地占据了那片心理空间。
    • FCMusic can also mark time and mood: this playlist means work, and the brain learns the cueThe colon introduces a concrete illustrative example within the sentence, more fluent than 6.5's separate, less connected sentence on the same idea.冒号在句子内引出了一个具体的示例,比6.5分对同一想法使用独立、连接较弱的句子更流畅。
    • GRAWhat most people don't notice is that it's harmless for routine work and quietly costly for anything hardThe paired contrast 'harmless... and quietly costly' is more grammatically developed than 6.5's single, vaguer closing clause.成对的对比“harmless... and quietly costly”,在语法上比6.5分单一、更模糊的结尾从句更为成熟。

The closing clause 'where the attention it eats would otherwise have been useful' explains the precise mechanism of cost, not just the fact of it.结尾从句“where the attention it eats would otherwise have been useful”,解释了这个代价的确切机制,而不仅仅是陈述这个事实。

For a lot of people, background noise simply keeps other thoughts out. A colleague of mine can't design without a lo-fi playlist running, and when I asked why, she said silence lets her worries in — the music occupies exactly the part of her mind that would otherwise wander off. Some people grew up in genuinely busy households and find quiet almost unnatural as adults. Music can also mark time and mood: this particular playlist means work, and the brain quickly learns the cue. For repetitive tasks, noise makes the boredom considerably more bearable. What most people never notice is that it's essentially harmless for routine work and quietly costly for anything demanding, where the attention it eats would otherwise have been useful.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCwhere the attention it eats would otherwise have been usefulThis closing relative clause explains exactly why the cost matters, a more developed piece of reasoning than 6.5's vague final claim and 7.0's version that names the cost but not its mechanism.这个结尾的关系从句精确地解释了这个代价为何重要,比6.5分模糊的最终论断,以及7.0分点明代价却未解释机制的版本,都更为成熟的推理。
    • LRthe music occupies exactly the part of her mind that would otherwise wander offThe added precision word 'exactly' and phrasal verb 'wander off' give more vivid, specific texture than 7.0's plainer 'occupies the part of her mind that would otherwise wander'.增加的精确词“exactly”和短语动词“wander off”,比7.0分更平淡的“occupies the part of her mind that would otherwise wander”具有更生动、更具体的质感。

    为什么是这个分数

    • GRAThings that make city noise are mostly products of densityA plain generalising sentence. The closing contrast 'sounds the human ear has evolved to filter out, while engines and horns are ones it simply can't' gives the answer a precise, almost scientific final distinction.结尾的对比“sounds the human ear has evolved to filter out, while engines and horns are ones it simply can't”,为整篇回答带来一个精确、近乎科学化的最终区分。

Fewer people, fewer machines, and considerably more space between them. At my uncle's farm, the loudest thing at night is a frog, because there are no cars, no neighbours' televisions humming through the walls, and no construction — the things that generate city noise are essentially all products of density. Cities also have hard surfaces that bounce sound endlessly around; a rice field simply absorbs it instead. Rural life runs on daylight and quietens after dark, whereas cities never fully switch off, day or night. And there's a psychological side too: the countryside isn't actually silent — it's full of wind and insects and animals — but those are sounds the human ear has evolved to filter out, while engines and horns are ones it simply can't.

    • FCsounds the human ear has evolved to filter out, while engines and horns are ones it simply can'tThis closing contrast draws a precise biological distinction, a more developed ending than 6.5's plain closing statement and 7.0's version that stops one clause short of the full contrast.这个结尾的对比划出了一条精确的生物学界限,比6.5分平实的结尾陈述,以及7.0分在完整对比前就止步的版本,都更为成熟。

Yes, and I know from about ninety seconds of experience. A friend let me sit in a soundproofed booth, and within a minute and a half I could hear my own heartbeat and wanted out. Real silence is not peaceful, it is alarming, because the brain reads it as something being wrong. What people call quiet is really the absence of unwanted noise, not of all sound. Most of us have never experienced true silence and would find it disturbing fast. A place with gentle sound, like wind or water, feels much more comfortable.

A friend let me sit in a soundproofed recording booth once, and within a minute and a half I could hear my own heartbeat and badly wanted out — genuine silence isn't peaceful, it's alarming, because the brain reads it as something being wrong. What people call quiet is really the absence of unwanted noise, not of all sound. Most of us have never experienced true silence and would find it disturbing fairly quickly, to be fair. Before it existed, a summer evening in a residential area was basically a contest of speakers, and enforcement, patchy as it is, has genuinely changed how people behave. Laws work here, I'd say, because noise is a case where one person's freedom is directly another's harm, and neighbours can't really negotiate it themselves once it's become a habit. The closing judgement 'and that's not remotely fair' turns a neutral observation about rule-setting into an explicit ethical conclusion.结尾的判断“and that's not remotely fair”,把一个关于规则制定的中立观察,转变成了一个明确的伦理结论。

Yes, and my city has one that's probably its single most popular law: karaoke and loud music stop dead at ten at night. Before it existed, a summer evening in a residential area was essentially a contest of competing speakers, and enforcement, patchy as it still is, has genuinely changed how people behave. Laws work here because noise is a case where one person's freedom is directly another person's harm, and neighbours simply can't negotiate it themselves once it's hardened into a habit. They need to stay reasonable, though — sensible hours, decibel limits, exemptions for festivals — rather than attempting to ban life outright. But without a legal limit in place, the loudest person quietly sets the rules for everyone else, and that's not remotely fair.

Older people have usually had enough stimulation for a lifetime and have come to value calm, and hearing changes with age too, so noise genuinely becomes harder to filter out. Younger people are still busy collecting experiences, and for them noise often simply means life is happening somewhere nearby. Temples and pagodas, first of all — on a Sunday at dawn in Da Nang, I'd guess half the people there are seeking the quiet rather than the prayers. Libraries, obviously, and some people practically live in them. Parks and beaches early in the morning, before the crowds and music, work well too. Mountains and the countryside suit people who can actually travel. Cafés have started marketing themselves as quiet, with no music and no phone calls allowed, which tells you there's real demand. And I know people who go to church purely for the silence, without any belief at all.

    为什么是这个分数

    • LRI'd guess half the people there are seeking the quiet rather than the prayersThe hedge 'I'd guess' softens a fairly confident claim, and the verb 'seeking' is more precise than 6.5's plain 'want'.缓和语“I'd guess”软化了一个相当有把握的论断,而动词“seeking”比6.5分平淡的“want”更精确。
    • FCwhich tells you there's real demandThis inferential clause develops the observation about cafés into a small argument, something 6.5's flatter version leaves unstated.这个推论性从句把关于咖啡馆的观察发展成了一个小小的论点,而6.5分更平淡的版本对此则没有明说。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCWhat all these share is that quiet is expected of everyone there, so nobody has to enforce itThis closing synthesis draws every preceding example into one abstract principle, a considerably more developed ending than 6.5's plain list and 7.0's version without a unifying conclusion.这个结尾的综合把前面所有的例子都归纳成一条抽象的原则,比6.5分平实的列举和7.0分没有统一性结论的版本都更为成熟。

    为什么是这个分数

    • GRAThis story has happened in almost every town I knowA plain declarative sentence. The 7.5 version instead uses 'that exact story has repeated itself across nearly every town I know', a reflexive verb construction that is more grammatically developed.一个平实的陈述句。7.5分版本改用“that exact story has repeated itself across nearly every town I know”,是一个语法上更成熟的反身动词结构。

The fields behind my grandmother's house, where I spent silent childhood afternoons, are now a housing estate with a karaoke bar, and that story has repeated across pretty much every town I know. What has increased, to be fair, is deliberately quiet places — libraries, meditation rooms, designated quiet cafés — because quiet has become scarce enough to be provided on purpose. So the number of accidental quiet places has fallen sharply, while the number of designed ones has only crept up a little.

    为什么是这个分数

    • GRAdeliberately quiet places — libraries, meditation rooms, designated quiet cafésA three-item dash-led list is more developed than 6.5's simpler two-item 'like libraries and meditation rooms'.

    • LRthe silence seemed unbearable for about a minutePlain, rounded phrasing. The 7.0 and 7.5 versions use the more precise 'for about sixty seconds', a specific figure that sounds more like an actual observation than an estimate.平实、约数式的措辞。7.0和7.5分版本使用了更精确的“for about sixty seconds”,一个具体的数字,听起来更像是实际的观察结果,而不是估计。
    • FCI think this discomfort is learned, and it can be unlearned tooA flat closing statement. The 7.5 version extends this with a concrete example, 'the first few visits to my quiet garden left me restless, and now it's the restlessness itself that feels strange', giving proof rather than just asserting the claim.一个平淡的结尾陈述。7.5分版本用一个具体的例子来扩展它,“the first few visits to my quiet garden left me restless, and now it's the restlessness itself that feels strange”,提供了证据,而不只是断言这个论点。
    • GRAThe music in a café stopped working, and within a minute almost everyone had put in earbudsTwo clauses joined with 'and'. The 7.0 version instead reframes the second clause with a dash and evaluative phrase, 'the silence was apparently unbearable', giving the sentence more rhetorical shape.用“and”连接的两个分句。7.0分版本改用破折号和评价性短语来重新框定第二个分句,“the silence was apparently unbearable”,让句子的修辞形态更加突出。

The phrase 'in real time' emphasises that this was a live, witnessed event rather than a general claim, giving the anecdote more immediacy.短语“in real time”强调这是一个实时目睹的事件,而不是一个泛泛的论断,让这段轶事更具即时感。

I agree, honestly, and I once watched it happen in real time. The music system in a café failed, and within a minute almost every person had put in earbuds — the silence was apparently unbearable for about sixty seconds. We're so used to a soundtrack that its absence feels like something is missing or wrong, and for many people, to be fair, silence also means being alone with their thoughts, which they'd rather avoid. Older people seem less affected; my parents can sit in a quiet room without reaching for anything at all. It's a learnt discomfort, and I think it can be unlearnt.

    为什么是这个分数

    • LRI once watched it happen in real timeThe phrase 'in real time' is a more vivid, specific way of establishing the anecdote than 6.5's plain 'I once saw it happen myself'.短语“in real time”是一种比6.5分平淡的“I once saw it happen myself”更生动、更具体的方式,来确立这段轶事的可信度。
    • GRAOlder people seem less affected; my parents can sit in a quiet room without reaching for anything at allThe semicolon joins the general claim directly to its specific example, more fluent than 6.5's separate two-sentence version of the same idea.分号把这个概括性论断和它的具体例子直接连接了起来,比6.5分把同一想法拆成两个独立句子的版本更流畅。
    • FCIt's a learnt discomfort, and I think it can be unlearntThis closing sentence states the claim but, unlike 7.5, doesn't provide the concrete evidence of the garden example, making it slightly less developed as a conclusion.这个结尾句陈述了论断,但不像7.5分那样提供花园那个具体例子作为证据,所以作为结论略显不够成熟。

The closing example about the garden gives 'it can be unlearnt' concrete, first-hand proof rather than leaving it as an abstract claim.结尾关于花园的例子,为“it can be unlearnt”这个论断提供了具体的第一手证据,而不是把它留作一个抽象的论断。

I agree, and I once watched it happen in real time. The music system in a café failed, and within a minute almost every person present had reached for earbuds — the silence was apparently unbearable for about sixty seconds flat. We're so accustomed to a constant soundtrack that its absence feels like something is missing or actively wrong, and for many people silence also means being left alone with their thoughts, which they'd rather avoid entirely. Older people seem noticeably less affected; my parents can sit in a quiet room without reaching for anything. It's a learnt discomfort, and it can, I think, be unlearnt — the first few visits to my quiet garden left me restless, and now it's the restlessness itself that feels strange.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCthe first few visits to my quiet garden left me restless, and now it's the restlessness itself that feels strangeThis closing example turns an abstract claim into lived evidence, a more developed conclusion than 6.5's shorter version of the same point and 7.0's version without any concrete proof at all.这个结尾的例子把一个抽象的论断变成了亲身经历过的证据,比6.5分对同一观点更简短的版本,以及7.0分完全没有具体证据的版本,都更为成熟的结论。
    • LRits absence feels like something is missing or actively wrongThe added adverb 'actively' intensifies the claim, sharper than 6.5's and 7.0's plainer 'feels like something is missing or wrong'.增加的副词“actively”强化了这个论断,比6.5和7.0分更平淡的“feels like something is missing or wrong”更为犀利。
    • GRAIt's a learnt discomfort, and it can, I think, be unlearntThe hedge 'I think' inserted mid-clause, between commas, shows more flexible sentence control than 7.0's simpler 'and I think it can be unlearnt' tacked on the end.缓和语“I think”插入在从句中间、用逗号隔开,展现出比7.0分更简单的、附加在末尾的“and I think it can be unlearnt”更灵活的句子掌控力。

The plain phrase 'quiet is where imagination happens' states an abstract idea directly with simple, everyday vocabulary.平实的短语“quiet is where imagination happens”,用简单、日常的词汇直接陈述了一个抽象的概念。

Rest comes first, for a brain that has been processing things all day, and sleep is better after quiet evenings at any age. Then thinking: the decisions I make after an hour sitting on that pagoda bench are noticeably clearer than the ones I make between meetings. For children, quiet is where imagination happens, since they have to make their own fun. For older people it lowers stress and blood pressure. There is also a social benefit — people who have had some quiet are usually kinder to others.

    为什么是这个分数

    • LRsince they have to make their own funPlain, colloquial phrasing. The 7.0 and 7.5 versions use the more precise 'it forces them to generate their own entertainment', a more formal and specific verb choice.平实、口语化的措辞。7.0和7.5分版本使用了更精确的“it forces them to generate their own entertainment”,是一个更正式、更具体的动词选择。
    • FCThere is also a social benefit — people who have had some quiet are usually kinder to othersA simple final claim with no explanation of mechanism. The 7.0 and 7.5 versions add the reason, 'because they arrive with something left', which explains why the claim is true.一个没有解释机制的简单最终论断。7.0和7.5分版本加上了理由,“because they arrive with something left”,解释了这个论断为什么成立。
    • GRARest comes first, for a brain that has been processing things all day, and sleep is better after quiet evenings at any ageA single long sentence joined with 'and'. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCwhich isn't a small thingThis understated evaluative tag adds a layer of personal judgement that 6.5's flatter statement about blood pressure lacks entirely.这个低调的评价性短语增添了一层个人判断,而这是6.5分更平淡的血压陈述完全没有的。

For children, quiet is precisely where imagination happens, since it forces them to generate their own entertainment rather than absorb someone else's. For older people it lowers stress and blood pressure, which is far from a small thing. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCA life with no quiet in it runs entirely on reactionThis closing aphorism generalises the whole answer into a single memorable principle, a far more developed ending than 6.5's plain final claim and 7.0's version without this closing generalisation.这个结尾的格言把整篇回答概括成一条令人难忘的原则,比6.5分平实的最终论断和7.0分没有这种结尾式概括的版本都成熟得多。

The plain imperative opener 'Start with the sources that respond quickly to rules' gives a direct instruction rather than a hedged suggestion.平实的祈使句开篇“Start with the sources that respond quickly to rules”,给出了一个直接的指令,而不是带缓和语气的建议。

Start with the sources that respond quickly to rules. Hanoi banned horns in part of the old quarter, and once fines were actually collected, it worked — the street changed within a month. So I would suggest horn restrictions, night-time limits on music and karaoke, and decibel limits for shops and construction, all with real enforcement. Longer term, building codes that require sound insulation between flats, quiet zones around schools and hospitals, and incentives for electric vehicles, which solve the largest problem at the source rather than around its edges. I'd add one thing legislation rarely bothers to touch: planning that prevents a bar from ever being licensed underneath a residential tower in the first place. Prevention, in the end, is cheaper than complaints.

    • FCPrevention, in the end, is cheaper than complaintsThis closing aphorism sums up the entire policy philosophy in six words, a considerably more developed ending than 6.5's plain final sentence and 7.0's version without any such summarising line.这个结尾格言用六个词总结了整个政策哲学,比6.5分平实的结尾句和7.0分没有这种总结性话语的版本都成熟得多。
    • LRwhich solve the largest problem at the source rather than around its edgesThe added contrast 'rather than around its edges' is a more precise, figurative elaboration than 7.0's plainer 'solve the biggest problem at the source'.增加的对比“rather than around its edges”,是一个比7.0分更平淡的“solve the biggest problem at the source”更精确、更具比喻色彩的阐述。
    • GRAplanning that prevents a bar from ever being licensed underneath a residential tower in the first placeThe passive infinitive construction 'from ever being licensed' is more grammatically developed than 7.0's simpler active 'stops a bar opening under'.被动不定式结构“from ever being licensed”,在语法上比7.0分更简单的主动结构“stops a bar opening under”更为成熟。
  18. 18. Do you think it would ever be desirable to eliminate all noise in cities?

The short direct opener 'No, and my parents' street is the reason why' states the answer and immediately points to the evidence in one plain sentence.简短、直接的开篇“No, and my parents' street is the reason why”,用一个平实的句子陈述了答案,并立即指向证据。

No, and my parents' street is the reason why. The morning market outside their house starts at five with shouting, chopping, and a hundred conversations, and it is noise I would fight to keep — it is the sound of a place being alive. Cities are made of people meeting, trading, and arguing, and all of that makes sound. Removing all noise would mean removing most of what makes a city better than a suburb. What we should choose is human voices and music, not engines and horns at midnight.

    不,我父母家的那条街就是原因所在。他们家门外的晨市从早上五点就开始了,叫卖声、剁菜声,还有上百场对话——这种噪音是我愿意拼命去守护的,因为这是一个地方“活着”的声音。城市正是由人们相遇、交易、争论构成的,而这一切都会发出声音。消除所有噪音,就意味着消除了让城市比郊区更好的大部分东西。我们应该选择的,是人声和音乐,而不是深夜里的引擎声和喇叭声。

    为什么是这个分数

    • GRACities are made of people meeting, trading, and arguing, and all of that makes soundA three-item list. The 7.0 and 7.5 versions extend this to a four-item list including 'celebrating', giving a fuller sense of the range of city life.一个三项列表。7.0和7.5分版本把它扩展成一个包含“celebrating”的四项列表,让城市生活的丰富程度更加完整地呈现出来。
    • LRit is the sound of a place being aliveA vivid but relatively plain metaphor. The 7.5 version intensifies this with 'the sound of a place actually being alive', adding the emphatic 'actually' for more force.一个生动但相对平实的隐喻。7.5分版本用“the sound of a place actually being alive”来强化它,加上了强调语“actually”,增添了更多力度。
    • FCWhat we should choose is human voices and music, not engines and horns at midnightA plain closing sentence. The 7.5 version extends this with a further generalisation, 'A city should sound like people, not like machines', adding a whole extra layer to the conclusion.一个平实的结尾句。7.5分版本用一个进一步的概括来扩展它,“A city should sound like people, not like machines”,为结论增添了一整层新的内容。

The colon-led list at the end, 'choosing the noise: human voices and music yes, engines and horns at midnight no', compresses a whole policy into six words.结尾冒号引出的列表“choosing the noise: human voices and music yes, engines and horns at midnight no”,用六个词就压缩了一整套政策主张。

No, honestly, and my parents' street is the reason why. The morning market outside their house starts at five with shouting, chopping and a hundred conversations, and it's noise I'd genuinely fight to keep — it's the sound of a place being alive. Cities are made of people meeting, trading, arguing and celebrating, and all of that has a sound attached to it. Eliminating noise, to be fair, would mean eliminating most of what makes a city better than a suburb in the first place. What's desirable is choosing the noise: human voices and music yes, engines and horns at midnight no.

    • GRACities are made of people meeting, trading, arguing and celebratingA four-item list, one more than 6.5's three-item version, giving a fuller sense of city life's range.一个四项列表,比6.5分的三项版本多了一项,让城市生活的丰富程度更加完整地呈现出来。
    • LRall of that has a sound attached to itThe phrase 'attached to it' personifies sound as something that clings to activity, a more figurative choice than 6.5's flatter 'makes sound'.短语“attached to it”把声音拟人化,让它像是黏附在活动上的东西,比6.5分更平淡的“makes sound”更具比喻色彩。
    • FCWhat's desirable is choosing the noise: human voices and music yes, engines and horns at midnight noThe colon-led yes/no structure compresses the whole policy into a compact, spoken-sounding list, more developed than 6.5's fuller sentence expressing the same idea.冒号引导的是/否结构,把整个政策压缩进一个紧凑、听起来口语化的列表中,比6.5分表达同一想法的更完整的句子更为成熟。

The closing antithesis 'A city should sound like people, not like machines' distils the entire answer's argument into a single, quotable line.结尾的对偶句“A city should sound like people, not like machines”,把整篇回答的论点提炼成一句可供引用的话。

No, and my parents' street is exactly the reason why. The morning market outside their house starts at five with shouting, chopping and a hundred overlapping conversations, and it's noise I'd fight fiercely to keep — it's the sound of a place actually being alive. Cities are made of people meeting, trading, arguing and celebrating, and every part of that has a sound attached to it, whether we like it or not. Eliminating noise altogether would mean eliminating most of what makes a city genuinely better than a suburb. What's desirable is choosing the noise: human voices and music, yes; engines, horns and construction at midnight, no. A city should sound like people, not like machines. Silence is for the garden behind the pagoda, and that's precisely why I need the city loud.

    • FCA city should sound like people, not like machinesThis closing antithesis adds a whole extra generalising sentence beyond 6.5's and 7.0's endings, giving the argument a final, memorable summary.这个结尾的对偶句,在6.5和7.0分的结尾基础上,又增添了一整句概括性的句子,为整个论述带来一个令人难忘的最终总结。
    • LRa hundred overlapping conversations'Overlapping' is a more precise, vivid adjective than 6.5's and 7.0's plain 'a hundred conversations', suggesting simultaneity and texture.“Overlapping”是一个比6.5和7.0分平淡的“a hundred conversations”更精确、更生动的形容词,暗示了同时性和层次感。
    • GRAevery part of that has a sound attached to it, whether we like it or notThe added concessive clause 'whether we like it or not' shows more flexible sentence control than 7.0's plainer version without this qualification.增加的让步从句“whether we like it or not”,展现出比7.0分没有这种限定说明的更平淡版本更灵活的句子掌控力。
