Describe a person you know who is good at learning languages.

You should say:

  • how you know this person
  • what languages this person speaks
  • how this person learned to speak these languages
  • and explain why you think this person is good at learning languages.

范文:6.5、7.0、7.5 三档

同一题目的三个版本,分别写到对应分数的真实水平——对比着看,能清楚看到分数之间到底差在哪里。

6.5 分

The answer relies on simple cause-and-effect statements ('he only became confident after joining our studio') and a plain personal comparison at the end, keeping the language clear but unremarkable, as expected at Band 6.5.答案依靠简单的因果陈述句('他是加入我们工作室之后才变得自信起来的')以及结尾一个平实的个人比较,使语言清晰但平平无奇,符合6.5分的预期水平。

The person I want to talk about is my coworker Minh, who works as a project manager at the same studio as me. I've known him for about three years, since we sit quite close to each other in our open-plan office.

Minh speaks Vietnamese, of course, good English, and also Japanese, because our studio works with a few clients from Japan. He can have full work meetings in Japanese without much trouble, which honestly impresses me a lot.

How he learned is mostly through work and apps, not a real classroom. He told me he studied English at school like everyone else, but he only became confident after joining our studio and talking to foreign clients on video calls every week. For Japanese, he started with a phone app in his free time, then practised with our Japanese clients directly, asking them to correct his mistakes during calls.

Why I think he's good at learning languages is because he isn't shy about making mistakes. When he doesn't know a word, he just tries to explain it another way instead of stopping the conversation. He also listens very carefully to how native speakers talk. I studied English for many years at school too, but I still feel nervous speaking to a client directly, so I really admire how naturally he does it.

  • LRwhich honestly impresses me a lot'Impresses me a lot' states the reaction using the most common available verb and intensifier, rather than a more specific or idiomatic alternative a higher band might use, and 'honestly' is used here simply as a plain intensifying adverb rather than functioning as the kind of mid-sentence rhythmic device a 7.0 answer might exploit. The admiration is stated once, directly, and the sentence moves on, which keeps the vocabulary plain and clear — exactly the 6.5 lexical target of everyday words doing the communicative job without reaching for range.'Impresses me a lot' 用最常见的动词和加强语气的词来表达这种反应,而不是使用更高分数段可能会用的更具体或更具习语色彩的替代表达,而 'honestly' 在这里只是单纯作为一个平实的加强语气副词使用,而不是像 Band 7.0 答案可能利用的那种句中节奏性手段。这种钦佩之情只被直接表达了一次,句子便继续往下走,这使得词汇保持简单清晰——正是 Band 6.5 词汇目标所要求的:用日常词汇完成交流任务,而不去追求词汇范围的拓展。
  • GRAHe told me he studied English at school like everyone else, but he only became confident after joining our studioReported speech ('He told me he studied...') is extended with a single 'but' contrast and then a coordinated pair of gerund phrases ('joining... and talking...') marking the cause of his confidence — accurate and reasonably long, but built entirely from coordination rather than varied subordination. A 7.0 answer describing the same shift from classroom English to workplace fluency might instead use a participial or reason clause to tighten the causal link; here the connectors stay basic and safe, fitting the 6.5 grammar target's preference for accuracy over structural ambition.间接引语('He told me he studied...')通过一个单一的 'but' 转折得到扩展,随后是一对并列的动名词短语('joining... and talking...'),用以标示他自信的来源——这句话准确且长度适中,但完全由并列结构搭建而成,而非多样化的从属结构。一个描述同样从课堂英语转向职场流利表达这一转变的 Band 7.0 答案,可能会转而使用分词结构或原因从句来收紧因果联系;而这里的连接词始终保持基础和稳妥,符合 Band 6.5 语法目标准确优先于结构野心的偏好。
  • FCI studied English for many years at school too, but I still feel nervous speaking to a client directlyThe closing sentence draws one direct comparison between the speaker's own years of study and continued nervousness against Minh's ease with clients, using 'but' and 'so' to chain contrast into consequence within a single sentence. This comparison is the answer's clearest piece of personal reflection, but it stops at stating the contrast and the resulting admiration rather than exploring why the gap exists, which a 7.0 answer might do by linking it back to Minh's comfort with mistakes mentioned earlier.

The answer develops the 'why' section with a specific behavioural example (describing unknown words rather than stopping) and a closing reflection on her motivation, giving fuller development than 6.5 while using fewer of the varied structures and idiomatic asides that mark the 7.5 answer.答案在'原因'部分用一个具体的行为例子(遇到不会的词就换种方式描述,而不是卡住)来展开论述,并以对她学习动机的反思收尾,发展程度比6.5分更充分,但使用的多样句式和地道插入语不如7.5分答案丰富。

The person I'd talk about is my cousin Hiền, who works as a tour guide in Hội An, taking visitors around the old town and the nearby islands.

Hiền speaks Vietnamese and English fluently, and over the past few years she's also picked up a good level of French and enough Mandarin to guide small Chinese tour groups without an interpreter, which genuinely surprises me every time I hear her switch between them.

How she learned wasn't through any formal course, as far as I know. She studied basic English at school like the rest of us, but she really improved once she started working with tourists every day and had no choice but to communicate. For French, she told me she picked up phrases from French tourists who visited regularly, then practised by watching French films with subtitles on her days off. Her Mandarin came later, mostly from a phone app combined with real conversations with Chinese visitors, who she says correct her pronunciation without her even asking.

Why I think she's good at learning languages is that she treats every conversation as a small lesson rather than something to get through quickly. She's not afraid of sounding awkward, and if she doesn't know a word, she just describes it in a different way until the tourist understands. She also has a good ear — she can copy a French or Chinese accent almost immediately after hearing it a couple of times, which I've never been able to do myself even after years of studying English at school.

What strikes me most is that her motivation is practical rather than academic: better language skills mean better tips and happier tourists, so she keeps improving without really thinking of it as studying at all.

  • LRshe treats every conversation as a small lesson"Small lesson" is a natural collocation used metaphorically, an everyday conversation reframed as an informal learning opportunity, which is more specific and flexible than saying she "learns from talking to people." This is the step above plain vocabulary the 7.0 descriptor targets, staying conversational rather than becoming genuinely idiomatic. It also functions as the thesis for the whole explanatory paragraph, which goes on to illustrate exactly how she turns tourist interactions into practice."Small lesson"(小小的一课)是一个用于比喻义的自然搭配,把一次日常对话重新塑造成一次非正式的学习机会,比单纯说她"learns from talking to people"更具体、更灵活。这正是Band 7.0描述所瞄准的、超越普通词汇的一步,同时仍保持口语化,而不是真正意义上的习语。这个短语也充当了整段说明的论点,后文正是围绕她如何把与游客的互动变成练习机会来展开说明的。
  • GRAif she doesn't know a word, she just describes it in a different way until the tourist understandsThis combines a conditional clause, "if she doesn't know a word," with a result clause containing its own subordination, "until the tourist understands," handling two levels of structure accurately in one natural-sounding sentence. It's the comfortable, accurate complex grammar the 7.0 descriptor describes, illustrating a specific communication strategy rather than just asserting she's a good communicator. The conditional framing also makes the claim feel like a habitual, observed pattern rather than a one-off event.这句话把一个条件从句"if she doesn't know a word"与一个本身又带有从属结构的结果从句"until the tourist understands"结合在一起,在一个听起来自然的句子里准确处理了两层结构。这正是Band 7.0描述中那种从容、准确的复杂语法,用来说明一种具体的沟通策略,而不只是断言她是一个善于沟通的人。这种条件式的表达方式也让这个说法听起来像是一种可观察到的、习惯性的模式,而不是一次性的事件。
  • FCWhat strikes me most is that her motivation is practical rather than academicThis closing sentence draws a considered conclusion about why Hiền is successful, practical motivation over academic study, rather than simply restating that she's good with languages, which is the kind of reflective development the 7.0 descriptor rewards. A 6.5 answer would likely just say "she's very good at languages" without this distinction. It also retrospectively reframes all the earlier examples, tourists correcting her pronunciation, films, apps, as evidence for this specific claim about motivation.这句结语得出了一个经过思考的结论,解释Hiền为什么能够成功——是实用的动机,而不是学院式的学习——而不是简单地重复她“外语很好”这一点,这正是Band 7.0描述所看重的反思性发展。Band 6.5的答案很可能只会说"she's very good at languages",而没有这种区分。它也回溯性地重新解读了前文所有的例子——游客纠正她的发音、看电影、用手机应用——把它们都变成支撑这一“动机说”具体论点的证据。
7.5 分

The simile 'listens like a musician' and the closing comparative sentence about teachers with degrees show the flexible, precise language and sentence variety typical of Band 7.5.'像音乐家一样倾听'这个明喻,以及结尾关于那些有学位的老师的比较句,展现出7.5分典型的灵活、精确的语言和多样的句式。

The person I'd talk about is Duy, a Grab driver here in Da Nang who I've ended up riding with dozens of times, because he does the early airport runs and I travel for work more than I'd like. I know him the way you know a regular driver — twenty-minute conversations, once a month, over about three years.

Duy speaks Vietnamese, obviously, plus English well enough to argue about football, Korean that Korean passengers genuinely compliment, and enough Russian to handle the tourists who come to the beach in winter. He's thirty-four and left school at sixteen.

How he learnt is the interesting part, because it wasn't a course. He told me he started with English by writing down every phrase a passenger said that he didn't understand, in a notebook he kept in the door pocket, and then asking the next English-speaking passenger what it meant. Korean came the same way, from the huge number of Korean tourists on his airport route; he'd learn one new sentence a day and test it on the next customer. He watches Korean dramas with the subtitles off now. Russian is newer and rougher, but he's doing the same thing with it.

Why I think he's genuinely good at it, rather than just persistent, is that he has no fear of being wrong. He'll try a sentence, get it wrong, laugh, and try again in the same breath, which is exactly the thing that stops most of us — I studied English for twelve years and still hesitate before speaking to a stranger. He also listens like a musician; he mimics accents without seeming to try. And he's learning for something real: every language means better tips and better conversations, so the motivation never runs out. I've had teachers with degrees who taught me less about learning than that notebook in the door pocket.

  • LRHe also listens like a musician; he mimics accents without seeming to try.The simile 'listens like a musician' is a single, well-chosen figurative image rather than a string of them — exactly the restrained 'one figurative or idiomatic touch if it fits the moment' the Band 7.5 descriptor calls for, as opposed to a 6.5 answer that would flatly state 'he listens carefully' or an 8.0 answer stacking several such images together. The semicolon then lets 'he mimics accents without seeming to try' land as a second, closely related observation rather than a new sentence, so the figurative claim is immediately backed up with a concrete detail about Duy's ear for sound. It reads as genuine praise growing out of watching him on rides, not a rehearsed comparison inserted for effect.
  • GRAI've had teachers with degrees who taught me less about learning than that notebook in the door pocket. This is an inverted 'less...than' comparative — degreed teachers are set below an object, a notebook — with a relative clause ('who taught me less about learning') embedded inside it, a structure a 6.5 or 7.0 answer would rarely risk because of the accuracy demands of getting both the comparative and the clause to agree. At Band 7.5 the descriptor calls for 'varied complex structures... that are mostly error-free,' and this sentence pulls that off while still sounding like spontaneous speech rather than a scripted line. Comparing degreed teachers against a driver's door-pocket notebook also does real rhetorical work, driving home the essay's argument that motivation beats credentials.
  • FCHe'll try a sentence, get it wrong, laugh, and try again in the same breath, which is exactly the thing that stops most of usRather than finishing the anecdote about Duy trying and failing and then adding a separate sentence like 'This shows he isn't afraid of mistakes,' the speaker folds that judgement straight into the narrative with a relative clause — 'which is exactly the thing that stops most of us.' That fusion of story and evaluation, rather than a bolt-on comment at the end, is the coherence move the Band 7.5 descriptor asks for ('one clear reflective or evaluative point, not just description'); a 6.5 answer would typically narrate the action and stop there. The self-deprecating pivot to 'most of us,' followed by the admission about hesitating after twelve years of study, also widens the point from Duy specifically to a universal truth about language learning.

The 6.5 answer opens with a flat direct opinion ('Not really') and strings together simple 'so' and 'but' connectors around one plain example each for the young and old generations.6.5分的回答以一个平淡直接的观点("Not really")开篇,并用简单的"so"和"but"连接词,分别为年轻一代和老一辈各举了一个平实的例子。

Not really, if we mean fluent in two languages properly. But it depends how you look at it. Most young people study English at school, so many can have a simple conversation, and that number is growing. Older people are different — my parents learned some French at school, but they never use it now. Also, inside Vietnamese itself, there are big differences. My grandmother speaks the Hue dialect, and people from Hanoi sometimes can't understand her. So it's complicated.

    查看中文翻译

    严格来说不算,如果指的是真正流利地掌握两种语言的话。但这要看你怎么理解这个问题。大多数年轻人在学校学英语,所以很多人能进行简单的对话,而且这个数字还在增长。老一辈就不一样了——我父母上学时学过一点法语,但现在根本不用了。而且,即便在越南语内部,差异也很大。我奶奶说的是顺化方言,河内人有时候都听不懂她说的话。所以这个问题挺复杂的。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCBut it depends how you look at it.This is a short, self-contained linking sentence using the plainest possible connector 'but' to move between ideas. A 7.0 answer would likely soften this with a spoken hedge like 'honestly' or 'to be fair', while a 7.5 answer would weave the qualification into a single flowing sentence instead of stating it separately.这是一个简短、独立的连接句,使用了最平实的连接词"but"来过渡不同的想法。7.0分的回答可能会用"honestly"或"to be fair"这样的口语化模糊限制语来软化语气,而7.5分的回答则会把这个限定条件编织进一个流畅的长句中,而不是单独陈述。
    • LRthere are big differences'Big differences' is a generic, everyday word pairing that does the job but shows no range. A 7.5 answer would reach for something more precise and idiomatic, such as 'diversity hiding inside', which conveys the same idea with more texture and less common phrasing."Big differences"是一个通用的日常词组搭配,虽然能表达意思,但没有展现出词汇的广度。7.5分的回答会选用更精准、更地道的表达,比如"diversity hiding inside"(内部隐藏的多样性),用更有质感、更不常见的措辞传达同样的意思。
    • GRAso many can have a simple conversation, and that number is growingThis is a simple compound sentence joined by 'and', which is grammatically safe but repetitive across the answer. A 7.0 or 7.5 response would more likely embed this as a subordinate clause or reduce it to a participial phrase, giving the grammar more variety and flexibility.这是一个用"and"连接的简单并列句,语法上安全稳妥,但在整篇回答中显得重复。7.0分或7.5分的回答更可能将其嵌入为从句,或简化成分词短语,使语法更多样、更灵活。
    7.0 分

The 7.0 answer adds a spoken hedge ('Honestly') and a reflective aside ('What's interesting is...') around one longer sentence built from a colon and a 'so' clause, going beyond 6.5's flatter opinion-plus-example structure.7.0分的回答加入了一个口语化的模糊限制语("Honestly")和一个反思性的插入语("What's interesting is..."),并围绕一个用冒号和"so"从句构建的长句展开,超越了6.5分版本更平淡的"观点+例子"结构。

Honestly, it depends on what you mean by 'speak.' If we're talking about real fluency, not that many — but if we mean being able to get by, the number is rising fast, mostly because almost everyone under thirty studies English at school now. My parents are a good example of the gap: they learned French decades ago and haven't used a word of it since, so it never really became a language for them. What's interesting is that even within Vietnamese there's a kind of bilingualism, since my grandmother's Hue dialect is different enough that people from Hanoi genuinely struggle to follow her.

    • FCHonestly, it depends on what you mean by 'speak.'Opening with 'Honestly' signals natural spoken reflection rather than a flat stated fact, which is typical of 7.0 fluency. A 6.5 answer would simply assert 'Not really' without this framing, while a 7.5 answer would likely compress the same idea into a tighter parallel structure.以"Honestly"开篇,传递出一种自然的口语化反思感,而不是平铺直叙地陈述事实,这是7.0分流利程度的典型特征。6.5分的回答只会直接断言"Not really",没有这样的铺垫;而7.5分的回答则可能把同样的想法压缩进一个更紧凑的平行结构中。
    • LRhaven't used a word of it sinceThis is a mild, natural collocation rather than the plainest possible phrasing like 'never use it'. It shows some control of idiomatic expression without reaching for genuinely uncommon vocabulary, which is what would distinguish a 7.5 answer.这是一个温和、自然的词语搭配,而不是像"never use it"那样最平实的表达。它展现出一定的习语表达掌控力,但还没有用到真正不常见的词汇,而这正是7.5分回答的区别所在。
    • GRAthey learned French decades ago and haven't used a word of it since, so it never really became a language for themThis single sentence links three ideas with 'and' and 'so', showing more complexity than 6.5's separated short sentences but stopping short of the participial or fronted structures a 7.5 answer would use to compress the same content further.这一个单句用"and"和"so"连接了三个想法,比6.5分版本分开的短句更复杂,但还没有用到7.5分回答会用来进一步压缩内容的分词结构或前置结构。
    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer opens with a compact parallel contrast ('Strictly speaking... loosely speaking...'), uses a participial phrase ('having picked up some French') instead of a plain clause, and closes with an idiomatic evaluative flourish weighing 'hardly anyone' against 'almost everyone.'7.5分的回答以一个紧凑的平行对比开篇("Strictly speaking... loosely speaking..."),用分词短语("having picked up some French")替代平铺直叙的从句,并以一个地道的评价性收尾,权衡"hardly anyone"与"almost everyone"之间的差异。

Strictly speaking, not that many — but loosely speaking, more than you'd think. Ask anyone under thirty and they've spent years studying English at school, which has quietly pushed conversational bilingualism up even if true fluency lags behind. My parents illustrate the opposite case nicely: having picked up some French decades ago, they've let it go completely rusty from sheer lack of use. What I find more telling, though, is the diversity hiding inside Vietnamese itself — my grandmother's Hue accent is thick enough to leave Hanoi natives genuinely lost. So depending on how strict your definition is, the honest answer swings between 'hardly anyone' and 'almost everyone.'

    • FCStrictly speaking, not that many — but loosely speaking, more than you'd think. This parallel construction delivers a nuanced, two-sided opinion in one fluent breath. A 6.5 answer would state the two sides as separate flat sentences, and even a 7.0 answer would likely need an extra hedge word rather than this tight balanced pairing.这个平行结构在一口气之间流畅地传达出一个细腻的两面性观点。6.5分的回答会把两面分别用平淡的句子陈述出来,甚至7.0分的回答也可能需要额外加一个模糊限制词,而不是这种紧凑平衡的搭配。
    • LRconversational bilingualismThis is a precise, slightly academic collocation that packs a whole idea into two words. A 6.5 answer would spell the same concept out plainly as 'have a simple conversation', showing far less lexical compression and range.这是一个精准、略带学术感的词语搭配,用两个词就浓缩了一整个概念。6.5分的回答会平铺直叙地把同样的概念写成"have a simple conversation",展现出远不如前者的词汇凝练度和广度。
    • GRAhaving picked up some French decades ago, they've let it go completely rusty from sheer lack of useThe fronted participial phrase 'having picked up some French decades ago' is a flexible, compact grammatical structure. A 7.0 answer would more likely use a colon-plus-clause pattern, and a 6.5 answer would simply write two short linked sentences instead.前置的分词短语"having picked up some French decades ago"是一种灵活紧凑的语法结构。7.0分的回答更可能使用冒号加从句的模式,而6.5分的回答则会干脆写成两个简短的关联句。

The 6.5 answer states a direct position ('It depends on the job') then gives one plain personal example and one contrasting example, linked mainly with 'so' and 'but'.6.5分的回答直接陈述了立场("It depends on the job"),然后给出一个平实的个人例子和一个对比性的例子,主要用"so"和"but"连接。

It depends on the job, not on everyone. In my case, I talk to clients from other countries in English every day, so I really need it for my work. But my cousin is an engineer at a construction company, and he doesn't use any other language at all. Jobs connected to tourism, technology or foreign companies usually need English. Other jobs don't need it so much. So for some jobs it's necessary, and for others it's just extra.

    这要看工作性质,而不是对每个人都一样。就我而言,我每天都要用英语跟其他国家的客户沟通,所以工作上真的很需要它。但我表哥是一家建筑公司的工程师,他根本不用任何其他语言。跟旅游、科技或外企相关的工作通常都需要英语,其他工作则没那么需要。所以对一些工作来说,这是必需的,而对另一些工作来说,只是加分项。

    • FCIt depends on the job, not on everyone. This is a blunt, direct opening position with no hedging. A 7.0 answer would likely soften it with 'Honestly, it really depends...', and a 7.5 answer would frame it with a more layered opening image, showing more developed spoken fluency.这是一个直白、直接的开篇立场,没有任何缓冲。7.0分的回答可能会用"Honestly, it really depends..."来软化语气,而7.5分的回答则会用更有层次感的开篇意象来构建,展现出更成熟的口语流利度。
    • LRJobs connected to tourism, technology or foreign companies usually need English.'Connected to' and 'usually need' are plain, literal word choices. A 7.5 answer would reach for a more vivid collocation like 'treat English as close to non-negotiable', showing far greater lexical precision."Connected to"和"usually need"都是平实、字面化的词语选择。7.5分的回答会选用更生动的搭配,比如"treat English as close to non-negotiable"(把英语当作几乎不容商量的条件),展现出远超前者的词汇精准度。
    • GRABut my cousin is an engineer at a construction company, and he doesn't use any other language at all. This is a simple compound sentence joined with 'and'. A 7.0 answer would more likely use a conditional clause, and a 7.5 answer would compress the same contrast into a 'whereas' structure within a single longer sentence.这是一个用"and"连接的简单并列句。7.0分的回答更可能使用条件从句,而7.5分的回答则会把同样的对比压缩进一个更长句子里的"whereas"结构中。
    7.0 分

The 7.0 answer softens the opinion with 'Honestly' and 'I'd say', and uses one conditional-style clause ('without it I'd be earning a lot less') that 6.5 avoids.7.0分的回答用"Honestly"和"I'd say"软化了观点,并使用了一个6.5分回避的条件式从句("without it I'd be earning a lot less")。

Honestly, it really depends on the sector rather than the job market as a whole. My own work is a clear case — I speak English with overseas clients daily, and without it I'd be earning a lot less doing similar design work locally. My cousin, on the other hand, is a solid engineer who has never needed a second language for his job. I'd say the pattern is that jobs touching foreign money, like tourism, tech or trade, treat English almost as a requirement now, while the rest of the economy still treats it as a bonus rather than a necessity.

    • FCI'd say the pattern is thatThis reflective hedge shows the speaker thinking through a generalisation in real time, typical of 7.0 fluency. A 6.5 answer would simply state the pattern as a bare fact, while a 7.5 answer would open it with a more assertive phrase like 'Broadly speaking'.这个反思性的模糊限制语展现出说话者正在实时思考、归纳出一个规律,是7.0分流利度的典型特征。6.5分的回答只会把这个规律当作赤裸裸的事实来陈述,而7.5分的回答则会用更有自信的短语如"Broadly speaking"来开篇。
    • LRjobs touching foreign moneyThis is a mild, natural collocation that goes slightly beyond the plainest wording. A 6.5 answer would say something flatter like 'jobs connected to tourism, technology', while a 7.5 answer would push further into idiom, such as 'close to non-negotiable'.这是一个温和、自然的词语搭配,比最平实的措辞略进一步。6.5分的回答会说得更平淡,比如"jobs connected to tourism, technology",而7.5分的回答则会更进一步用上习语,比如"close to non-negotiable"。
    • GRAwithout it I'd be earning a lot less doing similar design work locallyThis is a conditional-style structure embedded inside a larger sentence, showing more grammatical range than 6.5's simple coordinated clauses. A 7.5 answer would likely compress this further using a 'whereas' contrast within one sentence.这是一个嵌入在更大句子里的条件式结构,比6.5分简单的并列从句展现出更广的语法范围。7.5分的回答可能会用一个句子内的"whereas"对比结构进一步压缩这一内容。
    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer uses a less common verb ('hinges'), a compressed 'whereas' contrast clause, and an idiomatic closing image ('pry open still more specific doors') instead of the plainer statements of the lower bands.7.5分的回答使用了一个不太常见的动词("hinges"),一个压缩的"whereas"对比从句,以及一个地道的收尾意象("pry open still more specific doors"),而不是低分段版本那种更平实的陈述。

It hinges entirely on which corner of the economy you're in. My own career is proof of the trend — I earn what I do because I can talk to overseas clients in English daily, whereas without it I'd be a competent local designer on roughly half the salary. My cousin, meanwhile, thrives as an engineer without a second language in sight. Broadly speaking, sectors that touch foreign money — tourism, tech, trade, multinational firms — now treat English as close to non-negotiable, and a third language can pry open still more specific doors. Elsewhere, it remains a nice-to-have rather than a necessity, though the well-paid slice of the job market is shrinking toward those who speak two languages.

    • FCIt hinges entirely on which corner of the economy you're in.This opens with a precise, confident image rather than a flat statement. A 6.5 answer would open with the bare 'It depends on the job', showing much less developed idiomatic fluency at the very start of the response.这段以一个精准、自信的意象开篇,而不是平铺直叙的陈述。6.5分的回答会以赤裸裸的"It depends on the job"开篇,在回答一开始就展现出远不如前者成熟的习语流利度。
    • LRpry open still more specific doorsThis is a genuinely idiomatic, less-common phrase compared to plainer alternatives. A 6.5 answer would express the same idea with the flat wording 'usually need English', showing a clear gap in lexical range between the two bands.这是一个真正地道、不太常见的短语,相比更平实的替代表达而言。6.5分的回答会用平淡的措辞"usually need English"来表达同样的意思,显示出两个分数段之间明显的词汇范围差距。
    • GRAwhereas without it I'd be a competent local designer on roughly half the salaryThe 'whereas' clause compresses a contrast and a conditional into one compact structure. A 7.0 answer achieves a similar conditional idea but as a simpler standalone clause, and a 6.5 answer would split it into two separate sentences with 'and' and 'but'."whereas"从句把对比和条件压缩进一个紧凑的结构中。7.0分的回答也表达了类似的条件性想法,但只是一个更简单的独立从句,而6.5分的回答则会把它拆成用"and"和"but"连接的两个独立句子。

    6.5 分

The 6.5 answer gives a direct position ('not really necessary, but it makes travel much better') followed by one plain anecdote told in short 'and'-joined sentences.6.5分的回答给出一个直接的立场("not really necessary, but it makes travel much better"),接着讲述一个平实的轶事,用简短的"and"连接句叙述。

It's not really necessary, but it makes travel much better. Once in Bangkok, I knew only about ten words of Thai, and I used them in a small restaurant. The owner was so happy that she gave me her own dinner instead of the normal tourist menu. You can travel almost anywhere now with English and a translation app, so you don't need the language to survive. But if you know a little, people treat you differently, and you understand more of what's really happening around you.

    查看中文翻译

    这其实不算必要,但它能让旅行体验好很多。有一次在曼谷,我只会大概十个泰语单词,我在一家小餐馆里用上了。店主特别开心,给了我她自己的晚餐,而不是那份给游客准备的普通菜单。现在几乎哪里都能靠英语和翻译软件走遍天下,所以语言不是生存必需品。但如果你会一点点,人们对你的态度会不一样,你也能更懂周围真正发生的事情。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCIt's not really necessary, but it makes travel much better. This is a direct two-part opinion using the plain connector 'but' with no further hedging. A 7.0 answer would soften the same idea with 'To be fair, it isn't essential anymore', showing a more natural spoken qualifying tone.这是一个用平实连接词"but"表达的直接两段式观点,没有进一步的缓冲。7.0分的回答会用"To be fair, it isn't essential anymore"来软化同样的想法,展现出更自然的口语化限定语气。
    • LRso happy that she gave me her own dinnerThis uses modest, everyday vocabulary to describe the moment. A 7.5 answer would choose a more vivid verb, such as 'abandon the tourist menu entirely', giving the same anecdote sharper, more idiomatic detail.这里用了朴素、日常的词汇来描述那一刻。7.5分的回答会选用更生动的动词,比如"abandon the tourist menu entirely",让同一个轶事拥有更犀利、更地道的细节。
    • GRAOnce in Bangkok, I knew only about ten words of Thai, and I used them in a small restaurant. This is a simple chronological sentence joined with 'and'. A 7.5 answer would restructure the same information as a fronted participial phrase like 'Armed with maybe ten words of Thai...', producing more compact, flexible grammar.这是一个用"and"连接的简单时间顺序句。7.5分的回答会把同样的信息重新组织成一个前置分词短语,比如"Armed with maybe ten words of Thai...",从而产生更紧凑、灵活的语法。
    7.0 分

The 7.0 answer qualifies its opinion with 'To be fair' and 'honestly', and adds a reflective 'even if' clause at the end that 6.5's flatter ending lacks.7.0分的回答用"To be fair"和"honestly"限定了自己的观点,并在结尾加了一个反思性的"even if"从句,这是6.5分更平淡的结尾所没有的。

To be fair, it isn't essential anymore — you can get by almost anywhere with English and a translation app. But honestly, it changes the whole experience. I once had maybe ten words of Thai in a tiny restaurant in Bangkok, and just making the effort got me the owner's own dinner instead of the usual tourist menu. It's less about survival now and more about being treated as a person rather than a walking wallet, which is something no app quite manages. So I'd say it matters a lot for the quality of a trip, even if it's not required to take one.

    • FCBut honestly, it changes the whole experience. This natural spoken connector signals a shift into reflection after conceding the opposite point. A 6.5 answer would use the plainer 'but it makes travel much better' without this extra layer of concession-then-reflection.这个自然的口语连接词标志着在让步了相反观点之后转向反思。6.5分的回答会用更平淡的"but it makes travel much better",没有这层"先让步后反思"的额外结构。
    • LRrather than a walking walletThis is a mild idiomatic collocation that adds colour beyond literal wording. A 6.5 answer would express the same idea more plainly as 'people treat you differently', lacking this kind of figurative phrase.这是一个温和的习语搭配,为字面表达增添了色彩。6.5分的回答会更平淡地表达同样的意思,比如"people treat you differently",缺少这种比喻性短语。
    • GRAeven if it's not required to take oneThis is a subordinate concessive clause added onto the main point. A 6.5 answer would instead rely on simple coordinated sentences joined by 'but' and 'so', without this kind of embedded concession.这是附加在主要观点之后的让步从句。6.5分的回答则会依赖用"but"和"so"连接的简单并列句,没有这种嵌入式的让步结构。
    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer opens with a fronted participial phrase ('Armed with maybe ten words of Thai...') and uses the less common word 'curated' along with a compact dash-linked closing point, going beyond 7.0's plainer sentence structures.7.5分的回答以一个前置分词短语开篇("Armed with maybe ten words of Thai..."),使用了不太常见的词"curated",并配上一个用破折号连接的紧凑收尾观点,超越了7.0分更平实的句子结构。

Not essential, exactly, but it transforms the trip rather than merely accompanying it. Armed with maybe ten words of Thai in a hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Bangkok, I watched the owner abandon the tourist menu entirely and serve me her own dinner instead — fluency wasn't the point, effort was. These days you can navigate almost anywhere on English and a translation app, so survival was never really the issue. What a little language buys you is subtler: being treated as a person instead of a walking wallet, and glimpsing what's actually going on around you rather than the version curated for outsiders. So it's less about whether you can travel and more about what kind of trip you end up having.

    • FCfluency wasn't the point, effort wasThis compact parallel construction delivers a punchy contrast in very few words. A 6.5 answer would need a full separate sentence to make the same point, such as 'so happy that she gave me her own dinner', showing far less fluent compression.这个紧凑的平行结构用极少的词语传达出有力的对比。6.5分的回答需要一整个独立的句子才能表达同样的观点,比如"so happy that she gave me her own dinner",展现出远不如前者流畅的压缩能力。
    • LRthe version curated for outsiders'Curated' is a genuinely less-common word choice applied in a fresh way. A 6.5 answer would use the plain phrase 'the normal tourist menu', showing much more limited lexical range."Curated"是一个真正不太常见、被巧妙运用的词语选择。6.5分的回答会用平实的短语"the normal tourist menu",显示出远为有限的词汇范围。
    • GRAArmed with maybe ten words of Thai in a hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Bangkok, I watched the owner abandon the tourist menu entirelyThis fronted participial phrase opens the sentence before the main clause, a flexible structure that a 6.5 answer would not attempt, instead writing the plain chronological 'Once in Bangkok, I knew...'这个前置分词短语在主句之前开启了整句话,是一种灵活的结构,6.5分的回答不会尝试这种写法,而是会写出平实的时间顺序句"Once in Bangkok, I knew..."。

    6.5 分

The 6.5 answer states its main claim directly ('The best way is to actually use the language') and supports it with two short parallel 'I' sentences joined by 'but', typical of the band's plain connector style.6.5分的回答直接陈述了主要论点("The best way is to actually use the language"),并用两个以"but"连接的平行"I"句支撑,是该分数段典型的平实连接风格。

The best way is to actually use the language for something real, not just study it. I took a Japanese evening class for a year, and now I remember almost nothing. But I worked with a Japanese client for three months, and I still remember every word we used. So having a real purpose helps a lot more than a classroom. Speaking from the start matters too, even if you make mistakes. And doing a little every day works better than studying for hours once a week.

    最好的方法是真正把语言用在实际的事情上,而不只是学习它。我上过一年的日语夜校课,现在几乎什么都不记得了。但我跟一个日本客户合作了三个月,当时用到的每一个词我现在还记得。所以有一个真实的目的,比坐在教室里有用得多。从一开始就开口说也很重要,哪怕会犯错。而且每天做一点,比一周一次学好几个小时效果更好。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCThe best way is to actually use the language for something real, not just study it.This is a direct, topic-first opening with no hedging device. A 7.0 answer would likely begin with 'Honestly, the biggest thing is...', giving the same claim a more natural spoken frame.这是一个直接、主题先行的开篇,没有任何模糊限制手法。7.0分的回答可能会以"Honestly, the biggest thing is..."开篇,为同样的论点赋予更自然的口语化框架。
    • LRhaving a real purpose helps a lot more than a classroomThis uses plain, everyday vocabulary to state the point. A 7.5 answer would phrase the same idea more precisely as 'purpose supplies the repetition that lessons never quite manage', showing much richer lexical control.这里用了朴素、日常的词汇来陈述观点。7.5分的回答会更精准地表达同样的想法,比如"purpose supplies the repetition that lessons never quite manage",展现出远为丰富的词汇掌控力。
    • GRAI took a Japanese evening class for a year, and now I remember almost nothing. This is a simple sentence joined with 'and'. A 7.0 answer would combine the class-versus-client comparison into one longer sentence using 'yet', showing more developed sentence-level complexity.这是一个用"and"连接的简单句。7.0分的回答会用"yet"把"课程对比客户"这一比较合并进一个更长的句子,展现出更成熟的句子层面复杂度。
    7.0 分

The 7.0 answer links the class-versus-client comparison into one sentence with 'yet', and adds the reflective aside 'I'd say that's because...' that goes beyond 6.5's separate short sentences.7.0分的回答用"yet"把"课程对比客户"这一比较连接进一个句子,并加入了反思性的插入语"I'd say that's because...",超越了6.5分分开的短句。

Honestly, the biggest thing is having a real reason to use it, not just studying it in a classroom. I took a Japanese evening class for a whole year and barely remember anything now, yet three months working with a Japanese client left me still knowing every phrase we actually needed. I'd say that's because purpose creates repetition in a way classes rarely manage. It also helps to start speaking immediately rather than waiting until you feel ready, since adults tend to be far too worried about sounding silly. To be fair, consistency beats intensity too — fifteen minutes a day adds up more than one long class a week.

    • FCI'd say that's because purpose creates repetition in a way classes rarely manage. This reflective hedge shows the speaker reasoning out loud about why something works, typical of 7.0 fluency. A 6.5 answer would simply state the conclusion flatly as 'having a real purpose helps a lot more than a classroom' with no such reasoning marker.这个反思性的模糊限制语展现出说话者正在大声推理某件事为何有效,是7.0分流利度的典型特征。6.5分的回答只会平淡地陈述结论"having a real purpose helps a lot more than a classroom",没有这种推理标记。
    • LRfar too worried about sounding sillyThis is a natural spoken collocation with mild colour. A 7.5 answer would push further into more vivid phrasing, such as 'swallowing the embarrassment', showing a clearer step up in lexical precision.这是一个带有些许色彩的自然口语搭配。7.5分的回答会更进一步用上更生动的表达,比如"swallowing the embarrassment",展现出词汇精准度上明显的提升。
    • GRAI took a Japanese evening class for a whole year and barely remember anything now, yet three months working with a Japanese client left me still knowing every phrase we actually neededThis single long sentence links both experiences with 'yet', showing more grammatical range than 6.5's two separate short sentences. A 7.5 answer would compress this further using a dash and a fronted evaluative phrase.这一个长句用"yet"把两段经历连接起来,比6.5分两个分开的短句展现出更广的语法范围。7.5分的回答会用破折号和前置的评价性短语进一步压缩这一内容。
    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer opens with a fronted gerund phrase ('Using it for something real...') as its topic sentence and closes with an idiomatic evaluative touch ('finding a single patient native speaker willing to put up with you'), more compact than 7.0's plainer phrasing.7.5分的回答以一个前置动名词短语作为主题句开篇("Using it for something real..."),并以一个地道的评价性收尾("finding a single patient native speaker willing to put up with you"),比7.0分更平实的表达更紧凑。

Using it for something real, as early and as badly as possible, beats almost any classroom method. A full year of evening Japanese classes left me remembering next to nothing, whereas three months of working alongside a Japanese client somehow lodged every phrase we needed permanently in my head — purpose, it turns out, supplies the repetition that lessons never quite manage. Speaking from day one matters more than grammar tables ever will, and so does swallowing the embarrassment adults are notoriously bad at tolerating. Consistency also beats intensity hands down: fifteen minutes daily will outlast a weekend crash course every time. If I had to pick one shortcut, though, it would be finding a single patient native speaker willing to put up with you.

    • FCIf I had to pick one shortcut, though, it would be finding a single patient native speaker willing to put up with you. This closing sentence adds a fluent evaluative touch, summarising the whole answer with a single memorable recommendation. A 6.5 answer ends flatly instead, with a bare fact like 'doing a little every day works better than studying for hours once a week', showing no such rounding-off.这句结尾增添了一个流畅的评价性色彩,用一个令人印象深刻的建议总结了整个回答。6.5分的回答则以一个赤裸裸的事实平淡收尾,比如"doing a little every day works better than studying for hours once a week",没有这种收束感。
    • LRlodged every phrase we needed permanently in my head'Lodged' is a vivid, genuinely less-common verb choice for describing memory. A 6.5 answer would use the plain phrase 'still remember every word we used', showing a much narrower vocabulary range for the same idea."Lodged"是一个生动、真正不常见的动词选择,用来描述记忆。6.5分的回答会用平实的短语"still remember every word we used",展现出远为狭窄的词汇范围。
    • GRAUsing it for something real, as early and as badly as possible, beats almost any classroom method. This sentence is fronted by a gerund phrase functioning as the subject, a flexible structure a 6.5 answer would not use, instead opening plainly with 'The best way is to actually use the language...'这句话以一个作主语的动名词短语开头,是一种灵活的结构,6.5分的回答不会使用,而是会平实地以"The best way is to actually use the language..."开篇。

    6.5 分

The 6.5 answer splits its reasoning into two plain parts ('Partly it's the brain, and partly it's their life') and supports each with a short factual sentence joined by 'and' or 'but'.6.5分的回答把论证分成两个平实的部分("Partly it's the brain, and partly it's their life"),并分别用一个由"and"或"but"连接的简短事实性句子加以支撑。

Partly it's the brain, and partly it's their life. My nephew is five, and he can copy the accent of a Korean cartoon character perfectly, but I can't even hear the sounds he's copying. Young children's ears and mouths are just more flexible. But I think the bigger reason is that children aren't embarrassed and aren't busy. They say wrong sentences again and again without worrying, and they hear the language all day. Adults have jobs and families and only a little free time, and they're scared of sounding silly.

    • FCPartly it's the brain, and partly it's their life. This plain, direct two-part opening states the structure of the whole answer immediately. A 7.0 answer would soften the same framing with 'I'd say it's partly biological and partly about how differently children live', adding a reflective hedge.这个平实、直接的两段式开篇立刻点明了整篇回答的结构。7.0分的回答会用"I'd say it's partly biological and partly about how differently children live"软化同样的框架,加入一个反思性的模糊限制语。
    • LRchildren aren't embarrassed and aren't busyThis uses modest, everyday vocabulary. A 7.5 answer would choose the more precise phrase 'neither self-conscious nor busy', showing a step up in formality and word choice for the same idea.这里用了朴素、日常的词汇。7.5分的回答会选用更精准的短语"neither self-conscious nor busy",在同一想法上展现出更正式、更讲究的用词。
    • GRAAdults have jobs and families and only a little free time, and they're scared of sounding silly. This sentence simply stacks items with repeated 'and'. A 7.5 answer would compress the same list into a tighter participial clause, such as 'juggling full lives, an hour a week if that, and a genuine horror of sounding stupid'.这句话只是用重复的"and"把几个项目堆叠在一起。7.5分的回答会把同样的列表压缩进一个更紧凑的分词从句,比如"juggling full lives, an hour a week if that, and a genuine horror of sounding stupid"。
    7.0 分

The 7.0 answer hedges with 'I'd say' and 'to be fair', and uses one conditional sentence ('Give an adult a child's conditions, and I suspect...') that 6.5 doesn't attempt.7.0分的回答用"I'd say"和"to be fair"作模糊限制,并使用了一个条件句("Give an adult a child's conditions, and I suspect..."),这是6.5分没有尝试的。

I'd say it's partly biological and partly about how differently children live. My five-year-old nephew can nail the accent of a Korean cartoon character, and honestly I can't even hear the sounds he's imitating — that window for picking up sounds perfectly does seem to close with age. But to be fair, the bigger factor might just be that children aren't embarrassed and aren't busy: they'll repeat a wrong sentence a hundred times without caring, while adults have full lives, maybe an hour a week, and a real fear of sounding stupid. Give an adult a child's conditions, and I suspect they'd actually learn faster in most ways except accent.

    • FCBut to be fair, the bigger factor might just be thatThis spoken qualifier weighs two possible explanations against each other in real time. A 6.5 answer states the same idea more flatly as 'But I think the bigger reason is that', without this extra layer of natural hesitation and weighing.这个口语化的限定语在实时权衡两种可能的解释。6.5分的回答会更平淡地陈述同样的想法,比如"But I think the bigger reason is that",没有这层自然的犹豫和权衡。
    • LRnail the accent of a Korean cartoon character'Nail the accent' is a mild, natural collocation beyond the plainest wording. A 6.5 answer would say 'copy the accent... perfectly' instead, which is correct but shows less idiomatic range."Nail the accent"是一个温和、自然的搭配,超越了最平实的措辞。6.5分的回答会说"copy the accent... perfectly",虽然正确,但展现出的习语范围较窄。
    • GRAGive an adult a child's conditions, and I suspect they'd actually learn faster in most ways except accent. This imperative-plus-clause conditional structure is more complex than a simple declarative sentence. A 6.5 answer would not attempt this pattern, sticking instead to straightforward statements joined by 'and' or 'but'.这种"祈使句+从句"的条件结构比简单的陈述句更复杂。6.5分的回答不会尝试这种模式,而是坚持用"and"或"but"连接的直白陈述。
    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer opens with the precise word pair 'neurological and... circumstantial' and uses a fronted gerund clause ('Watching my five-year-old nephew...') as its sentence subject, more compact than 7.0's plainer structure.7.5分的回答以精准的词语对"neurological and... circumstantial"开篇,并用一个前置的动名词从句("Watching my five-year-old nephew...")作句子主语,比7.0分更平实的结构更紧凑。

It's partly neurological and partly circumstantial. Watching my five-year-old nephew nail the accent of a Korean cartoon character while I can't even hear the sounds he's copying is a pretty stark reminder that young ears and mouths stay flexible in a way that simply closes off later. The bigger factor, though, is probably that children are neither self-conscious nor busy — happily mangling the same sentence a hundred times, marinating in the language all day, with nobody expecting fluency yet. Adults, by contrast, are juggling full lives, an hour a week if that, and a genuine horror of sounding stupid. Hand an adult a child's conditions, and in most respects except accent, they'd likely outlearn the child.

    • FCThe bigger factor, though, is probably thatThis qualifier is folded smoothly into the sentence flow rather than standing as its own clause. A 6.5 answer separates the same idea into its own plain sentence, 'But I think the bigger reason is that', showing less integrated fluency.这个限定语被平滑地融入句子的流动中,而不是单独成为一个从句。6.5分的回答把同样的想法拆成一个独立的平实句子"But I think the bigger reason is that",展现出较不流畅的整合能力。
    • LRmarinating in the language all day'Marinating' is a vivid, genuinely less-common verb applied metaphorically. A 6.5 answer would use the plain literal phrase 'they hear the language all day', showing a much smaller vocabulary range for the same idea."Marinating"是一个生动、真正不常见的动词,被用作隐喻。6.5分的回答会用平实的字面短语"they hear the language all day",展现出远为狭窄的词汇范围。
    • GRAWatching my five-year-old nephew nail the accent of a Korean cartoon character while I can't even hear the sounds he's copying is a pretty stark reminderThis fronted gerund phrase functions as the subject of the whole sentence, a compact and flexible structure. A 6.5 answer would instead write the simple 'My nephew is five, and he can copy...' with the subject stated plainly at the start.这个前置动名词短语充当了整句话的主语,是一种紧凑而灵活的结构。6.5分的回答则会写出简单的"My nephew is five, and he can copy...",在开头就平实地点明主语。

    6.5 分

The 6.5 answer states its position directly ('vocabulary is much more useful') and supports it with one plain example, using simple 'but' and 'so' connectors throughout.6.5分的回答直接陈述了立场("vocabulary is much more useful"),并用一个平实的例子加以支撑,全篇用简单的"but"和"so"连接。

For getting things done, vocabulary is much more useful. My friend Duy speaks Korean using mostly nouns and simple phrases, almost no grammar, but it works fine — his passengers always understand him. You can point at a word and be understood, but you can't do that with only grammar and no words. Grammar becomes important later, when you want to say something more precise or polite. So at the start, vocabulary matters most, and grammar matters more once you already understand the basics.

    要把事情办成,词汇量要有用得多。我朋友阿维(Duy)说韩语基本上只用名词和简单短语,几乎不懂语法,但照样管用——他的乘客总是能听懂他的意思。你可以指着一个词让别人明白你的意思,但如果只有语法、没有词汇,你根本做不到。语法要到后来才变得重要,那时候你想说得更精确或更有礼貌。所以一开始的时候,词汇最重要,而一旦你已经掌握了基础,语法就变得更重要了。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCFor getting things done, vocabulary is much more useful. This direct plain opening states the position with no hedge word. A 7.0 answer would frame the same claim with 'Honestly, for basic communication, vocabulary wins pretty easily', adding a natural spoken hedge.这个直接平实的开篇陈述了立场,没有任何模糊限制词。7.0分的回答会用"Honestly, for basic communication, vocabulary wins pretty easily"来构建同样的论断,加入了自然的口语化模糊限制语。
    • LRit works fineThis is modest, generic vocabulary that just states the outcome. A 7.5 answer would use the more developed phrase 'it serves him and his passengers just fine', showing slightly richer, more deliberate wording.这是朴素、通用的词汇,只是陈述了结果。7.5分的回答会用更精致的短语"it serves him and his passengers just fine",展现出略微更丰富、更考究的措辞。
    • GRAYou can point at a word and be understood, but you can't do that with only grammar and no words. This is a simple contrastive sentence joined by 'but'. A 7.5 answer would compress the same contrast using 'whereas' or fold it into a longer sentence with a dash, showing more flexible sentence-level grammar.这是一个用"but"连接的简单对比句。7.5分的回答会用"whereas"压缩同样的对比,或者用破折号把它折进一个更长的句子里,展现出更灵活的句子层面语法。
    7.0 分

The 7.0 answer hedges its claim with 'Honestly' and 'I'd say', and adds a 'though to be fair' qualifying remark about most learners that 6.5's flatter conclusion lacks.7.0分的回答用"Honestly"和"I'd say"来限定自己的论断,并加了一句"though to be fair"来限定关于大多数学习者的说法,这是6.5分更平淡的结论所没有的。

Honestly, for basic communication, vocabulary wins pretty easily. Duy's Korean is mostly nouns and memorised phrases with almost no grammar, and it works perfectly well for him and his passengers — you can point at a word and be understood, whereas a perfect grammar rule with no vocabulary gets you nowhere. I'd say grammar only becomes important later, once being understood isn't enough and you actually want to sound precise or polite. So vocabulary matters first and grammar matters eventually, though to be fair, most learners get that order backwards because grammar is simply easier to teach in a classroom.

    • FCthough to be fair, most learners get that order backwardsThis spoken qualifying remark adds a self-correcting reflection at the end of the answer. A 6.5 answer ends flatly with its conclusion and no such additional qualifying thought, showing less developed coherence-building.这句口语化的限定语在回答结尾加了一段自我修正式的反思。6.5分的回答会以结论平淡收尾,没有这样额外的限定性想法,展现出较不成熟的连贯性构建能力。
    • LRmemorised phrases with almost no grammarThis is a slightly more precise phrasing than 6.5's plainer 'simple phrases, almost no grammar', showing marginally more careful word choice while still staying within common vocabulary.这比6.5分更平实的"simple phrases, almost no grammar"措辞略微更精准,展现出稍微更用心的用词选择,同时仍属于常见词汇范围。
    • GRAyou can point at a word and be understood, whereas a perfect grammar rule with no vocabulary gets you nowhereThe 'whereas' subordinate clause creates a more sophisticated contrast than 6.5's plain 'but' coordination. This shows a wider range of linking devices typical of the higher band."whereas"从句创造出比6.5分平实的"but"并列结构更精巧的对比。这展现出更宽泛的连接手法,是更高分数段的典型特征。
    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer opens with the idiomatic 'wins hands down', uses a relative clause fronted with 'whose Korean is little more than...', and closes with the precise phrase 'grammar earns its keep', more compact and vivid than 7.0's plainer wording.7.5分的回答以地道的"wins hands down"开篇,用"whose Korean is little more than..."引导的关系从句,并以精准的短语"grammar earns its keep"收尾,比7.0分更平实的措辞更紧凑、更生动。

For sheer functionality, vocabulary wins hands down. Take Duy, whose Korean is little more than nouns and a handful of memorised phrases with barely any grammar attached, and yet it serves him and his passengers just fine — you can point at a word and be understood, but a flawless grammar rule with zero vocabulary gets you nowhere at all. Grammar only earns its keep later, once being understood stops being enough and you want to sound precise, polite, or genuinely adult. So vocabulary is more useful first and grammar more useful eventually, and most learners, chasing textbook logic, get that order backwards precisely because grammar is easier to teach than words are to memorise.

    • FCFor sheer functionality, vocabulary wins hands down. This fluent idiomatic opening delivers the position with confidence and colour in one breath. A 6.5 answer states the same idea far more plainly as 'vocabulary is much more useful', with no idiomatic flourish.这个流畅地道的开篇一口气自信而有色彩地传达了立场。6.5分的回答会用远为平实的"vocabulary is much more useful"来陈述同样的想法,没有任何地道的修饰。

    • GRATake Duy, whose Korean is little more than nouns and a handful of memorised phrases with barely any grammar attached, and yet it serves him and his passengers just fineThis relative clause is embedded mid-sentence with a 'yet' contrast, producing a longer, more flexible structure. It's not impossible, but you miss a lot. In Vietnamese, you can't say 'you' without choosing a word that shows the other person's age and your relationship with them. This one thing explains a lot about how we treat family and older people. You can learn about a culture's food and history without the language, and many foreigners understand Vietnam quite well already. But jokes, politeness, and things people don't say directly — you only get those through the language. So you can understand a culture partly, but not completely, without it.

    • FCIt's not impossible, but you miss a lot. This direct, plain two-clause opinion sets up the whole answer immediately. A 7.0 answer would give the same opinion a more reflective frame with 'Not impossible, I'd say, but there's definitely a layer you never quite reach without it.'这个直接平实的两分句观点立刻为整篇回答定下了基调。7.0分的回答会用"Not impossible, I'd say, but there's definitely a layer you never quite reach without it."为同样的观点赋予更具反思性的框架。
    • LRThis one thing explains a lot about how we treat family and older people. This is plain, generic vocabulary describing the significance of the example. • GRAYou can learn about a culture's food and history without the language, and many foreigners understand Vietnam quite well already. This is a simple sentence joined with 'and'. 7.0 分

The 7.0 answer hedges with 'I'd say' and 'To be fair', and uses one relative clause ('which honestly explains more about... than any book could') that 6.5's simpler sentences avoid.7.0分的回答用"I'd say"和"To be fair"作模糊限制,并用了一个关系从句("which honestly explains more about... than any book could"),这是6.5分更简单的句子所回避的。

Not impossible, I'd say, but there's definitely a layer you never quite reach without it. In Vietnamese, for instance, you can't even say 'you' without picking a word that states the other person's age and your relationship to them, which honestly explains more about how we treat family and seniority than any book could. To be fair, plenty of foreigners here understand Vietnam's food, history and habits perfectly well from outside the language. But the jokes, the politeness, and what people mean when they deliberately don't say something — those live only in the language itself. So culture is understandable in part without it, but the language is the last, and biggest, door.

    • FCTo be fair, plenty of foreigners here understand Vietnam's food, history and habits perfectly well from outside the language. This natural conceding remark shows the speaker weighing the opposite view before continuing. A 6.5 answer states the same fact more flatly as 'You can learn about a culture's food and history without the language', without this concessive framing.这句自然的让步表达展现出说话者在继续之前权衡了相反的观点。6.5分的回答会更平淡地陈述同样的事实,比如"You can learn about a culture's food and history without the language",没有这种让步性的框架。

A 6.5 answer would state the conclusion plainly as 'you can understand a culture partly, but not completely', with no figurative language at all.这是温和的比喻性表达,延伸了一个简单的隐喻。6.5分的回答会平实地陈述结论,比如"you can understand a culture partly, but not completely",完全没有比喻性语言。

    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer personifies the language ('Vietnamese won't even let you say...') and uses a semicolon to compress two closing clauses into one sentence, more idiomatic and compact than 7.0's separated sentences.7.5分的回答把语言拟人化了("Vietnamese won't even let you say..."),并用分号把两个结尾从句压缩进一个句子,比7.0分分开的句子更地道、更紧凑。

Not impossible, but there's a whole layer you'll never quite reach without it. Vietnamese won't even let you say 'you' without committing to a word that flags the other person's age and your relationship to them — a single grammatical quirk that reveals more about how we handle family and seniority than any book ever could. Plenty of foreigners here get Vietnam's food, history and habits perfectly well from the outside, translation losing surprisingly little along the way. What it can't carry across, though, are the jokes, the politeness, and everything people mean precisely by not saying it — those live nowhere but in the language itself. So a culture stays partly understandable without the words; the language is simply the last door, and it happens to be a big one.

It can split your identity in an interesting way. I'm more direct in English than in Vietnamese — blunter and quicker to disagree — and I've wondered which one is really me. Each language comes with its own manners and memories, so people who speak more than one language can feel like slightly different people in each. For migrants, this can feel confusing, like not fully belonging anywhere. For others, it feels like having more space inside themselves. Either way, language and identity are closely connected.

Honestly, it can split identity in interesting ways. I'm noticeably more direct in English than in Vietnamese — blunter, quicker to disagree — and I've genuinely wondered which version is the real one. I'd say each language carries its own manners and memories, so people who speak several can end up feeling like slightly different versions of themselves depending on which one they're in. For migrants and their children especially, that can be a source of real tension, a sense of not fully belonging to either side. For others, though, it feels more like an expansion, almost like having extra rooms in the same house.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI'd say each language carries its own manners and memoriesThis reflective spoken hedge frames the claim as a considered opinion rather than a bare fact. A 6.5 answer states the same idea flatly as 'Each language comes with its own manners and memories', with no such framing device.这个反思性的口语化模糊限制语把论断构建成了一种经过深思的观点,而不是赤裸裸的事实。6.5分的回答会平淡地陈述同样的想法,比如"Each language comes with its own manners and memories",没有这种构建手法。

    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer uses the less-common verb 'splinter' and 'curdle' instead of plain words, and closes with a conditional evaluative sentence ('If there's a constant, it's that...') that is more compact and reflective than 6.5's flat closing line.7.5分的回答用了不太常见的动词"splinter"和"curdle",而不是平实的词语,并以一个条件式的评价性句子("If there's a constant, it's that...")收尾,比6.5分平淡的结尾句更紧凑、更具反思性。

It can splinter identity in ways that are genuinely disorienting. I come across noticeably blunter and quicker to disagree in English than in Vietnamese, which has left me wondering more than once which version is actually me. Each language seems to carry its own set of manners and memories baked in, so people who speak several often end up feeling like slightly different versions of themselves depending on which one they're inhabiting. For migrants and their children in particular, that can curdle into real tension — never quite belonging fully to either side. For others it reads more as expansion, like having extra rooms added onto the same house. If there's a constant, it's that losing a language, as many minority communities are, seems to feel like losing part of a self.

A 6.5 answer describes the same idea plainly as 'this can feel confusing', showing a much smaller vocabulary range for the same concept."Curdle"是一个真正不常见、生动的动词,被用作隐喻。6.5分的回答会平实地描述同样的想法,比如"this can feel confusing",展现出对同一概念远为狭窄的词汇范围。
    • GRAwhich has left me wondering more than once which version is actually meThis relative clause is embedded mid-sentence, adding detail without starting a new sentence. A 6.5 answer would instead use a separate coordinated clause joined by 'and', such as 'and I've wondered which one is really me'.这个关系从句嵌入句中,在不另起一句的情况下增加了细节。6.5分的回答则会用一个由"and"连接的独立并列从句,比如"and I've wondered which one is really me"。

    6.5 分

The 6.5 answer gives a direct position ('convenient, but... not fully desirable') and supports it with one plain anecdote, using simple 'but' and 'so' connectors throughout.6.5分的回答给出了一个直接的立场("convenient, but... not fully desirable"),并用一个平实的轶事加以支撑,全篇用简单的"but"和"so"连接。

It would be convenient, but I don't think it's fully desirable. I once tried a translation earpiece at a technology fair, and it got every word right but every joke wrong. That shows the real problem. Technology can make basic communication easy, which is great for travel or emergencies. But learning a language also trains your brain and helps you understand a culture's jokes and meaning, which translation can't do. So I'd want technology to remove the difficulty, not remove the reason to learn.

    这会很方便,但我觉得不能说完全可取。我有一次在科技展上试用了一个翻译耳机,它把每个词都翻对了,却把每个笑话都翻错了。这就说明了真正的问题所在。科技能让基本沟通变得容易,这对旅行或紧急情况来说很棒。但学一门语言还能训练大脑,还能帮你理解一种文化的笑话和言外之意,而这些是翻译做不到的。所以我希望科技能消除的是学习的"难度",而不是消除学习的"理由"。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCThat shows the real problem. This short, plain linking sentence stands alone to connect the anecdote to the argument. A 7.0 answer would fold the same idea into a relative clause, such as 'which sums up the problem pretty well', integrating it more fluently into the previous sentence.这个简短平实的连接句独立存在,把轶事和论点连接起来。7.0分的回答会把同样的想法折进一个关系从句,比如"which sums up the problem pretty well",更流畅地融入前一句话中。
    • LRTechnology can make basic communication easyThis is plain, generic vocabulary stating the benefit directly. A 7.5 answer would phrase the same idea more precisely as 'Technology rendering basic communication effortless is undeniably a gain', showing richer, more formal word choice.这是直接陈述好处的朴素、通用词汇。7.5分的回答会更精准地表达同样的想法,比如"Technology rendering basic communication effortless is undeniably a gain",展现出更丰富、更正式的用词。
    • GRAit got every word right but every joke wrongThis is a simple parallel clause joined with 'but'. A 7.5 answer would attach a relative clause to the same idea instead, such as 'which is about as neat a summary of the problem as you could ask for', producing more compact, flexible grammar.这是一个用"but"连接的简单并列从句。7.5分的回答则会给同样的想法附加一个关系从句,比如"which is about as neat a summary of the problem as you could ask for",产生更紧凑、灵活的语法。
    7.0 分

The 7.0 answer hedges with 'I'm honestly not so sure' and 'To be fair', and folds the anecdote's point into a relative clause ('which sums up the problem pretty well') rather than 6.5's separate short sentence.7.0分的回答用"I'm honestly not so sure"和"To be fair"作模糊限制,并把轶事的要点折进一个关系从句("which sums up the problem pretty well"),而不是像6.5分那样用独立的短句。

Convenient, definitely — desirable, I'm honestly not so sure. I tried a translation earpiece once at a technology fair, and it got every word right and every joke wrong, which sums up the problem pretty well. To be fair, technology making basic communication effortless is a real gain for travel, trade or emergencies, where nobody should suffer just because two people don't share a language. But learning a language does things translation simply can't — it trains the brain and opens up the parts of a culture that never survive translation. I'd want technology to remove the barrier, not the reason to bother learning in the first place.

    • FCConvenient, definitely — desirable, I'm honestly not so sure. This natural spoken hedged opening balances two ideas in one breath with a dash. A 6.5 answer states the same contrast more flatly as 'It would be convenient, but I don't think it's fully desirable', with less natural spoken rhythm.这个自然口语化的、带模糊限制的开篇用一个破折号在一口气之间平衡了两个想法。6.5分的回答会更平淡地陈述同样的对比,比如"It would be convenient, but I don't think it's fully desirable",口语节奏感较弱。
    • LRopens up the parts of a culture that never survive translationThis is mildly more vivid phrasing than the plain equivalent. A 6.5 answer expresses the same idea as 'helps you understand a culture's jokes and meaning', which is correct but noticeably plainer.这比平实的对应表达略微更生动。6.5分的回答会用"helps you understand a culture's jokes and meaning"来表达同样的意思,虽然正确,但明显更平淡。
    • GRAit got every word right and every joke wrong, which sums up the problem pretty wellThe relative clause 'which sums up the problem pretty well' is attached directly onto the main clause. A 6.5 answer instead writes this as a separate sentence, 'That shows the real problem', showing less integrated sentence structure.关系从句"which sums up the problem pretty well"直接附加在主句上。6.5分的回答则会把这个想法写成独立的句子"That shows the real problem",展现出较不整合的句子结构。
    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer opens with a semicolon-linked contrast ('Convenient, certainly; desirable is another matter entirely'), uses the less-common phrase 'earns its keep', and closes with a compact dash-linked evaluative touch about a world that would be 'smoother, and smaller.'7.5分的回答以一个用分号连接的对比开篇("Convenient, certainly; desirable is another matter entirely"),使用了不太常见的短语"earns its keep",并以一个用破折号连接的紧凑评价性收尾,谈到一个会变得"smoother, and smaller"的世界。

Convenient, certainly; desirable is another matter entirely. A translation earpiece I tried at a technology fair got every word right and every joke wrong, which is about as neat a summary of the problem as you could ask for. Technology rendering basic communication effortless is undeniably a gain in contexts like travel, trade or medical emergencies, where nobody should come to harm simply because two people don't share a language. But learning a language earns its keep in ways no earpiece can replicate — it rewires the brain, builds a kind of mutual respect that only effort produces, and unlocks the untranslatable parts of a culture. I'd want technology to dissolve the barrier, not the reason for learning in the first place — a world where nobody bothers anymore would end up smoother, and smaller.

    • FCConvenient, certainly; desirable is another matter entirely. This fluent, compact semicolon-linked opening balances the two-sided opinion in a single tight structure. A 6.5 answer opens more plainly with 'It would be convenient, but I don't think it's fully desirable', using a simple 'but' instead of this compressed contrast.这个流畅紧凑、用分号连接的开篇,在一个紧密的结构中平衡了两面性的观点。6.5分的回答会更平实地以"It would be convenient, but I don't think it's fully desirable"开篇,用简单的"but"而不是这种压缩的对比。
    • LRlearning a language earns its keep in ways no earpiece can replicate'Earns its keep' is a genuinely less-common collocation applied precisely. A 6.5 answer states the same idea plainly as 'learning a language also trains your brain', showing far less lexical sophistication."Earns its keep"是一个真正不常见、被精准运用的搭配。6.5分的回答会平实地陈述同样的想法,比如"learning a language also trains your brain",展现出远为逊色的词汇精巧度。
    • GRAa world where nobody bothers anymore would end up smoother, and smallerThis closing clause uses a compact fronted noun-clause construction as an evaluative touch. A 6.5 answer ends instead with the simple, plain final sentence 'So I'd want technology to remove the difficulty, not remove the reason to learn', without this kind of compressed, reflective closing image.这个结尾从句用了一个紧凑的前置名词从句结构,作为评价性的点睛之笔。6.5分的回答则会以简单平实的结尾句"So I'd want technology to remove the difficulty, not remove the reason to learn"收尾,没有这种压缩的、反思性的结尾意象。
