Describe a person you know who does a job which is useful to society

You should say:

  • who this person is
  • what job this person does
  • what skills this person needs to do the job
  • and explain why you think this job is useful to society

范文:6.5、7.0、7.5 三档

同一题目的三个版本,分别写到对应分数的真实水平——对比着看,能清楚看到分数之间到底差在哪里。

6.5 分

The 6.5 answer gives one plain, directly stated reason ('I think the main skill he needs is patience, because...') and stays close to simple coordinated sentences throughout.6.5分的答案给出一个朴素、直接陈述的理由(如'我觉得他最需要的能力是耐心,因为……'),全程基本使用简单的并列句。

The person I want to talk about is a man called Huy, who works as a traffic warden near my office building by the river.

His job is to stand at the crossing outside a primary school every morning and afternoon, and help the children cross the busy road safely. The traffic here can be quite dangerous, with a lot of motorbikes and cars moving fast, especially at rush hour when I'm going to work myself.

I think the main skill he needs is patience, because he does the same job every single day in the sun and rain, and children don't always listen or move quickly. He also needs to be alert all the time, watching the traffic from both directions while making sure no child gets left behind on the road.

I think this job is very useful to society because it keeps children safe on their way to school, which is something parents worry about constantly. Without someone like Huy there, I think there would be accidents. I see him every day when I ride past on my motorbike, and he always waves, even to people who aren't his job to protect. It's a small job that makes a real difference.

  • FCI think the main skill he needs is patience, because he does the same job every single day in the sun and rain, and children don't always listen or move quickly. The answer gives one direct reason (patience) and supports it with two concrete conditions — working in 'sun and rain' and dealing with children who 'don't always listen or move quickly' — directly answering the cue-card prompt about required skills. This is a clear, single-reason-plus-detail development that matches Band 6.5's expectation of one straightforward point made well, without extending into further reflection.这个回答给出了一个直接理由(耐心),并用两个具体的条件来支撑它——在"sun and rain"(风吹日晒)中工作,以及应对那些“并不总是听话或动作迅速”的孩子——直接回应了题卡所提出的关于所需技能的问题。这是一种清晰的“一个理由加细节”式发展,符合Band 6.5的期望——把一个直白的观点表达清楚,而不进一步延伸为更深层的反思。
  • LRI think there would be accidents.'I think there would be accidents' states a hypothetical consequence in the plainest possible terms, using the basic modal 'would' without any hedge, qualifier, or more precise description of what kind of accidents or how serious they might be. This kind of unqualified, simple statement is characteristic of Band 6.5's straightforward, unembellished vocabulary.'I think there would be accidents' 用最简单的方式陈述了一个假设性的后果,使用基础的情态动词'would',没有任何模糊限制语、限定词,也没有更精确地说明会是什么样的事故、或严重到什么程度。这种不加修饰的简单陈述正是Band 6.5那种直白、不加修饰的词汇特征。
  • GRAI see him every day when I ride past on my motorbike, and he always waves, even to people who aren't his job to protect. Two ideas are joined with 'and' — seeing Huy every day, and his waving even to strangers — with a concessive tag ('even to people who aren't his job to protect') added onto the end. This is an accurate, basic coordinated structure with one small addition, which is the level of grammatical range Band 6.5 is designed to reflect rather than anything more elaborately subordinated.两个想法用'and'连接在一起——每天见到Huy,以及他甚至会向陌生人挥手打招呼——句末又附加了一个让步性的补充语('even to people who aren't his job to protect')。这是一种准确但基础的并列结构,只加了一个小小的附加成分,这正是Band 6.5所要体现的语法范围水平,而不是任何更复杂的从属结构。
7.0 分

The 7.0 answer backs up its general claim with a short concrete example (covering a stallholder's stand 'without even being asked') and a longer but accurate sentence linking the job to the market's need for trust.7.0分的答案用一个简短具体的例子('根本不用人开口请求'就主动帮忙看摊)来支撑总体论点,并用一个较长但准确的句子把这份工作和市场对信任的需求联系起来。

The person I'd like to talk about is a man everyone calls Chú Sáu, who works as a security guard at Chợ Cồn market, close to where I live in Da Nang.

His main job is fairly simple on paper: he checks the gates in the early morning before the market opens and keeps an eye on things during the day, especially around closing time when people are packing up and it's easy for bags to go missing. But over the years he's ended up doing quite a bit more than that. He knows almost every stallholder by name, and if someone's had a bad day and can't watch their stall for ten minutes, he'll stand there for them without even being asked.

I think the main skill he needs is being observant, since he has to notice small things, like someone acting strangely near a stall, without making a big deal out of it. He also needs a surprising amount of patience, because dealing with hundreds of different people and their problems every day would wear most people out fairly quickly.

I think this job is useful to society because markets like that one depend completely on people trusting the place is safe enough to leave their belongings for a few minutes. Without someone like Chú Sáu quietly watching, I think a lot of small vendors, especially older ones, would feel much less secure running their stalls. It's easy to walk past someone like him without noticing what he actually does, but the market would honestly feel like a different, less friendly place without him.

  • LRwear most people out fairly quickly'Wear most people out' is a phrasal verb collocation describing gradual exhaustion, applied here to the cumulative effect of dealing with 'hundreds of different people' rather than physical tiredness, which shows the phrase being used with some flexibility. This natural, everyday-but-not-basic phrasal verb is the comfortably flexible vocabulary Band 7.0 lexical resource is calibrated around, a step beyond a plainer 'make people tired'.'Wear most people out' 是一个描述渐进式疲惫的短语动词搭配,这里被用来形容应对 'hundreds of different people' 所带来的累积效应,而非单纯的体力疲劳,显示出这个短语的运用带有一定的灵活性。这种自然、日常却又不失分量的短语动词,正是7.0分词汇资源所围绕设定的从容灵活的词汇水平,比更简单的说法 'make people tired' 更进一步。
  • FCif someone's had a bad day and can't watch their stall for ten minutes, he'll stand there for them without even being askedThe general claim about Chú Sáu knowing every stallholder is immediately followed by one specific, concrete scenario — covering someone's stall unasked when they're having a bad day — which turns an abstract compliment into something visualisable. Supporting a general observation with exactly one short, vivid example is the reason-plus-example pattern the Band 7.0 descriptor explicitly calls for.关于Chú Sáu认识每一个摊贩这一普遍说法,紧接着立刻给出了一个具体、生动的场景——在别人心情不好时,不用开口就主动帮忙照看摊位——把一句抽象的赞美变成了可以想象的画面。用恰好一个简短、生动的例子来支撑一个普遍观察,正是7.0分描述明确要求的"理由加例子"模式。
  • GRAI think this job is useful to society because markets like that one depend completely on people trusting the place is safe enough to leave their belongings for a few minutes. The sentence links a 'because' clause to an embedded structure of its own — 'people trusting the place is safe enough to leave their belongings' — meaning a clause is nested inside the reason rather than stated as a separate idea. Managing that kind of nested complexity accurately, rather than breaking it into two simpler sentences, is the comfortable range Band 7.0 grammar is calibrated to reward.这句话把一个 'because' 分句与自身的一个嵌套结构联系在一起——'people trusting the place is safe enough to leave their belongings'——也就是说,一个从句被嵌套在理由内部,而不是作为一个独立的想法单独陈述。准确地驾驭这种嵌套式复杂结构,而不是将其拆成两个更简单的句子,正是7.0分语法所要奖励的从容范围。
7.5 分

The 7.5 answer uses a short standalone sentence for emphasis ('He reads the beach.') and closes with a figurative, economical metaphor ('Some jobs hold a city up, and this is one of them.'), both markers of confident Band 7.5 control.7.5分的答案用一个独立的短句来强调('他能读懂整片海滩。'),并以一个形象、精炼的比喻收尾('有些工作默默撑起一座城市,这就是其中之一。'),两者都体现出7.5分自信从容的语言掌控力。

The person I'd talk about is a man called Bảo, who cleans My Khe Beach in Da Nang. I know him only because I run there early, and for about three years now he's been the one other person on the sand at half past four in the morning. We started nodding, then greeting, and now he tells me off if I've missed a few days.

His official job is sanitation — he and a small crew rake the beach, empty the bins, and deal with whatever the sea and the tourists have left overnight. But that's the small part of what he actually does. He reads the beach. He knows the tides by heart, and when the current shifts after a storm he walks down to the lifeguard station before it opens and tells them where the rip currents have moved. I've seen him pull broken glass out of the sand with his fingers, and once a whole fishing net that would have caught a swimmer's leg. On the last Sunday of each month he organises a volunteer cleanup that started with him and four friends and now has a hundred people, half of them students.

The skills sound simple and aren't. Physical stamina, obviously — it's hot, heavy, endless work. But also a kind of local knowledge nobody teaches: how the sea behaves, what's dangerous, which rubbish means a boat has dumped something. And he's a natural organiser without ever calling himself one.

Why it's useful to society is almost embarrassingly obvious, but I'll say it anyway. Da Nang lives on that beach — the tourism, the morning swimmers, the kids who learn to swim there. It's safe and clean at six in the morning because a man most visitors never see has already been there for two hours. Some jobs hold a city up, and this is one of them.

  • FCHe reads the beach. This three-word sentence breaks sharply from the longer descriptive sentences around it, creating a deliberate rhythmic pause that functions almost like a topic sentence for the paragraph that follows, explaining exactly what "reading the beach" means in practice. This kind of controlled, punchy short sentence used for emphasis — rather than just varying length randomly — is the confident delivery and coherence control the 7.5 tier rewards; a 7.0 answer would more likely fold this idea into a longer, more conventional sentence like "He also understands the beach really well." The metaphor itself, reading a beach like a text, is also a compact, original way of describing tacit expertise.
  • LRa kind of local knowledge nobody teachesThis phrase names an abstract concept — tacit, experience-based expertise — precisely and economically, using "nobody teaches" to imply it can only be learned through years of direct experience rather than spelling that idea out in a longer sentence. This kind of precise phrasing for an abstract idea is what the 7.5 tier's Lexical Resource descriptor means by "several precise or less-common words... used naturally"; a 7.0 answer would more likely describe the same idea more plainly, such as "he has learned a lot from experience." It also sits in useful contrast with the more literal "physical stamina" mentioned just before it, distinguishing two different kinds of skill.这个短语精准而经济地道出了一个抽象概念——靠经验积累的隐性专业能力,用“nobody teaches”来暗示这种能力只能靠多年的亲身经历习得,而不是用一整个更长的句子把这层意思说透。这种为抽象概念选用精准措辞的做法,正是 7.5 档次 Lexical Resource 描述中“several precise or less-common words... used naturally”(用得自然的几个精准或不常见的词)所指;Band 7.0 的答案更可能把同样的意思说得更直白,比如“he has learned a lot from experience”。它也与紧接其前、更偏字面意义的“physical stamina”形成有效对照,区分出两种不同的能力。
  • GRASome jobs hold a city up, and this is one of them.Grammatically this is a simple coordinated sentence, but it carries a figurative metaphor ("hold a city up") as its content, showing that sophistication at 7.5 doesn't always come from complicated syntax — sometimes it comes from choosing the right simple structure to deliver a striking idea economically. This kind of understated but carefully weighted closing sentence is characteristic of the 7.5 tier's expectation of "good rhythm and flexible language"; a 7.0 answer would more likely need a longer, more explicit sentence to make the same point, such as "I think what he does is really important for the city, even though most people don't realise it." The brevity here is itself the sophistication.从语法上看,这是一个简单的并列句,但它承载的内容却是一个比喻(“hold a city up”),说明 7.5 档次的老练并不总是来自复杂的句法——有时恰恰来自选对了一个简单的结构,经济地传达出一个令人印象深刻的想法。这种低调却分量十足的结尾句,正体现了 7.5 档次对“good rhythm and flexible language”(良好的节奏感和灵活的语言)的期待;Band 7.0 的答案更可能需要一个更长、更明说的句子来表达同样的意思,比如“I think what he does is really important for the city, even though most people don't realise it”。这里的简短本身就是老练所在。

I think care work will be the big one. Families in Vietnam are getting smaller and older, and you can already see private care homes opening around Da Nang where there were none ten years ago — but they can't find trained staff. As people get older, more and more jobs will be about looking after people, both physically and emotionally. Climate change will create jobs too, like flood engineering and coastal protection. At the same time, normal office work is shrinking fast because software can do it. So future jobs look more human, not less.

    • FCAs people get older, more and more jobs will be about looking after people, both physically and emotionally. This sentence restates the idea plainly with 'more and more jobs will be about'. The 7.0/7.5 versions use the more precise phrase 'whole categories of work will grow around', which sounds like a more considered generalisation.这句话用 'more and more jobs will be about' 平实地重申了这个想法。7.0/7.5版本用了更精确的短语 'whole categories of work will grow around',听起来更像是经过深思熟虑的概括。
    • LRnormal office work is shrinking fastThis is a plain, accurate description. The 7.0/7.5 versions add the precise modifier 'routine' before 'office work', which more accurately names the type of work being displaced.这是一个平实、准确的描述。7.0/7.5版本在 'office work' 前加了精确的修饰语 'routine',更准确地指明了正在被取代的那类工作。
    • GRAClimate change will create jobs too, like flood engineering and coastal protection.Examples are introduced with the plain connector 'like'. The 7.0/7.5 versions replace this with a colon followed by a short list, which is a more economical way of presenting the same examples.例子是用平实的连接词 'like' 引出的。7.0/7.5版本把它换成了冒号加简短列表,是呈现同样例子的更简洁方式。

I think care will be the big one. Families in Vietnam are getting smaller and older, and you can already see private care homes opening around Da Nang where none existed ten years ago — and they can't find enough trained staff. As populations age, I'd say whole categories of work will grow around looking after people, both physically and emotionally. Climate will create jobs too: flood engineering, coastal protection, energy. Meanwhile, routine office work is shrinking fast because software increasingly does it. So the jobs of the future look more human, not less — the things a machine genuinely can't do.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI'd sayThis hedge softens the generalisation about future work, a more natural spoken device than the flat 6.5 statement 'more and more jobs will be about looking after people'. The 7.5 version drops the hedge, stating the same claim with more direct confidence.这个缓和语软化了关于未来工作的概括,是比6.5中平铺直叙的 'more and more jobs will be about looking after people' 更自然的口语手法。7.5版本去掉了这个缓和语,以更直接、更自信的方式陈述同样的论断。
    • LRroutine office workThis precise compound noun names the type of work at risk exactly. The 6.5 version uses the vaguer 'normal office work', while 7.5 reuses this exact phrase, confirming it fits the higher bands.这个精确的复合名词准确地指出了处于风险中的工作类型。6.5版本用的是更模糊的 'normal office work',而7.5沿用了完全相同的短语,证实它适合更高分段。
    • GRAClimate will create jobs too: flood engineering, coastal protection, energy. This colon-introduced list of noun phrases is more economical than the 'like' clause used at 6.5. It's identical to the structure at 7.5, showing this device is already appropriate from 7.0 upward.这个由冒号引出的名词短语列表比6.5中使用的 'like' 分句更简洁。它和7.5的结构一致,说明这个手法从7.0起就已经合适了。

At the same time, routine office work is shrinking fast because software does it instead. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCwhich are mostly about caring for and understanding other peopleThis relative clause extends the closing sentence with a further explanation, going beyond 7.0's shorter ending 'the things a machine genuinely can't do' by specifying exactly what those things are.这个关系从句在结尾句上又加了一层解释,比7.0中更简短的结尾 'the things a machine genuinely can't do' 更进一步,具体说明了那些事情到底是什么。

Explains the negative alternative with a plain 'If you don't keep learning, you slowly get' structure.用一个平实的 'If you don't keep learning, you slowly get' 结构来解释这种消极的另一种可能。

Yes, and in my job it's not really optional. Half the tools I use every day didn't exist when I finished university seven years ago, and the way I work now would look strange to the person who left back then. This is true in most jobs to some degree — a nurse learns new rules, a mechanic learns about electric motors, a farmer learns a new app for prices. If you don't keep learning, you slowly get pushed to the edge of your own job. What's changed is that training used to be organised by employers, but now it's mostly up to the person, which isn't really fair to people without time or money.

    • FCIf you don't keep learning, you slowly get pushed to the edge of your own job. This is a simple conditional sentence with 'if... you get'. The 7.0/7.5 versions replace this with the noun phrase 'The alternative... is being slowly pushed', which packages the same idea more economically as a single clause.这是一个用 'if... you get' 构成的简单条件句。7.0/7.5版本把它换成了名词短语 'The alternative... is being slowly pushed',把同样的想法更简洁地打包成一个分句。
    • LRwould look strange to the person who left back thenThis is a workable but slightly informal comparison. The 7.0/7.5 versions upgrade this to the more precise, formal adjective 'unrecognisable', which is a stronger and more natural word choice for the idea of complete change.这是一个可行但略显随意的比较。7.0/7.5版本把它升级成了更精确、更正式的形容词 'unrecognisable',对于“彻底改变”这个概念来说是更有力、更自然的词汇选择。
    • GRAThis is true in most jobs to some degree — a nurse learns new rules, a mechanic learns about electric motors, a farmer learns a new app for prices.Three parallel examples are listed after a dash. Yes, and in my field it's simply not optional. That's true in most jobs to some degree — a nurse learns new protocols, a mechanic learns electric motors, a farmer learns a new app for prices. The alternative, honestly, is being slowly pushed to the edge of your own profession. What's changed is that training used to be something employers organised, and now it's largely on the individual, which seems unfair to people without the time or money. But the need itself isn't going away.

    • LRunrecognisableThis precise adjective is a clear upgrade from the vague 6.5 phrase 'would look strange'. It's reused identically at 7.5, confirming it already fits the higher bands.这个精确的形容词明显是从6.5中模糊的短语 'would look strange' 升级而来的。它在7.5中被原样沿用,证实它已经适合更高分段。
    • GRAThe alternative, honestly, is being slowly pushed to the edge of your own profession. The hedge 'honestly' is inserted between the subject and verb, a more flexible placement than a sentence-initial hedge would allow, showing slightly more grammatical control over hedging position than the simpler 6.5 conditional sentence.缓和语 'honestly' 被插入在主语和动词之间,这种位置比放在句首更灵活,展现出比6.5更简单的条件句略高一筹的、对缓和语位置的语法掌控力。

Yes, and in my field it's simply not optional. Half the tools I use every day didn't exist when I graduated seven years ago, and the way I work now would be unrecognisable to the person who left university back then. That's true in most jobs to some degree — a nurse learns new protocols, a mechanic learns electric motors, a farmer learns a new app for prices. The alternative is being slowly pushed to the edge of your own profession. What's changed is that training used to be something employers organised and now it's largely on the individual, which is unfair to people without the time or money. But the need itself isn't going away.

    • FCThe alternative is being slowly pushed to the edge of your own profession. This sentence states the consequence directly and confidently, without the mid-sentence hedge 'honestly' used at 7.0 or the conditional 'If you don't keep learning' structure at 6.5, yet still lands on the same idea.这句话直接、自信地陈述了后果,没有用7.0中句中的缓和语 'honestly',也没有用6.5中的条件句结构 'If you don't keep learning',但最终落脚点还是同一个想法。
    • LRa nurse learns new protocolsThe precise noun 'protocols' is more accurate and professional than the vague 6.5 phrase 'new rules', matching the identical upgrade already present at 7.0.精确的名词 'protocols' 比6.5中模糊的短语 'new rules' 更准确、更专业,与7.0中已经出现的相同升级一致。
    • GRAWhat's changed is that training used to be something employers organised and now it's largely on the individual, which is unfair to people without the time or money. This long sentence links a past/present contrast ('used to be... and now') directly to a relative clause of consequence ('which is unfair to...') in one continuous structure, slightly more fluent than 7.0's version of the same sentence, which pauses on the hedge 'honestly' earlier.这个长句把一个过去/现在的对比('used to be... and now')直接连接到一个表示后果的关系从句('which is unfair to...')上,构成一个连续的结构,比7.0中同一句话稍微更流畅,后者早先因缓和语 'honestly' 而有停顿。

University teaches the subject well but barely teaches the world of work — deadlines with money attached, difficult colleagues, who actually decides things.

    • FCUniversity teaches the subject well but barely teaches the world of workThe contrast here is built with the simple repeated verb 'teaches', which is clear but slightly repetitive. The 7.0/7.5 versions restructure this with a colon and an implied ellipsis ('and the world of work barely at all'), avoiding the repeated verb.这里的对比是靠重复动词 'teaches' 搭建起来的,清楚但略显重复。7.0/7.5版本用冒号和隐含的省略('and the world of work barely at all')重新组织了这句话,避免了动词的重复。
    • LRhad to negotiate instead of just defend my workThis phrase is functional but adds the extra words 'just' and 'my work' to make the contrast clear. The 7.0/7.5 versions compress this to the leaner 'negotiate rather than simply defend' / 'negotiate rather than defend', which reads more naturally at speed.这个短语有其功能性,但加了额外的词 'just' 和 'my work' 来让对比更清楚。7.0/7.5版本把它压缩成了更精简的 'negotiate rather than simply defend' / 'negotiate rather than defend',读起来语速更自然。
    • GRABut I'd say university is good for learning how to think and not very good for learning how a workplace works. This sentence repeats the phrase 'good for learning' twice, which is clear but a little repetitive. The 7.0/7.5 versions vary the second half to 'a poor place to learn how a workplace behaves', avoiding the repetition while keeping the parallel structure.这句话把 'good for learning' 这个短语重复了两次,清楚但有点重复。7.0/7.5版本把后半句变换成了 'a poor place to learn how a workplace behaves',避免了重复,同时保留了并列结构。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCUniversity teaches the subject well and the world of work barely at all:This sentence drops the repeated verb after 'and', relying on ellipsis, which is more economical than the 6.5 version's repeated verb 'teaches'. The 7.5 answer keeps this identical structure, showing it's already suited to the top band.这句话在 'and' 后省去了重复的动词,依靠省略手法,比6.5版本中重复动词 'teaches' 更简洁。7.5的回答保留了完全相同的结构,说明它已经适合最高分段。
    • LRnegotiate rather than simply defend the workThis is a leaner, more natural phrasing than the 6.5 version's 'negotiate instead of just defend my work'. The 7.5 answer trims it even further to 'negotiate rather than defend', dropping the object entirely for maximum economy.这是一种比6.5版本中的 'negotiate instead of just defend my work' 更精简、更自然的措辞。7.5的回答把它进一步精简成了 'negotiate rather than defend',干脆去掉了宾语,追求最大程度的简洁。
    • GRAa good place to learn how to think and a fairly poor place to learn how a workplace actually behavesThis parallel structure repeats 'a... place to learn how' twice with contrasting adjectives, a more controlled repetition-for-effect than the plain 6.5 version's similarly patterned but less polished sentence.这个并列结构用对比的形容词把 'a... place to learn how' 重复了两次,是一种更有掌控力的、为了效果而重复的手法,比6.5版本中模式相似但打磨不足的句子更胜一筹。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI had to negotiate rather than defendThis is the leanest version of the three bands' phrasing, dropping the object 'the work' entirely that both 6.5 and 7.0 include, trusting the reader to follow the implied contrast.这是三个分段中最精简的版本,彻底去掉了6.5和7.0都保留的宾语 'the work',相信读者能跟上这种隐含的对比。
    • LRtheir first bewildering year on the jobThe adjective 'bewildering' adds a vivid, precise sense of confusion that neither lower band attempts; this phrase appears only in the final sentence unique to this band.形容词 'bewildering' 增添了一种生动、精确的困惑感,两个较低分段都没有尝试过;这个短语只出现在这个分段独有的结尾句中。
    • GRAMost people learn that in their first bewildering year on the job. This additional closing sentence extends the answer beyond where 6.5 and 7.0 stop, adding a further generalising observation that rounds off the comparison rather than ending abruptly on the workplace/place-to-think contrast.这句额外的结尾把回答延伸到了6.5和7.0停下的地方之外,加上了一个进一步概括性的观察,把整个比较收拢起来,而不是在”职场/思考之地“的对比上戛然而止。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCwhich is paid like it's unskilled, when the city would actually stop within days without itThe comparison uses the informal 'like' and the plain verb 'stop'. The 7.0/7.5 versions replace 'like' with the more formal 'as if' and 'stop' with the stronger, more precise verb 'collapse', both clear upgrades.这个比较用了口语化的 'like' 和平实的动词 'stop'。7.0/7.5版本把 'like' 换成了更正式的 'as if',把 'stop' 换成了更有力、更精确的动词 'collapse',两者都是明显的升级。
    • LRwhich doesn't make sense by any measure of usefulnessThis is a workable but slightly flat evaluation. The 7.0 version softens it slightly to 'makes little sense', while 7.5 intensifies it to the more emphatic 'makes no sense', showing a wider range of evaluative precision across bands.这是一个可行但略显平淡的评价。7.0版本把它软化成了 'makes little sense',而7.5则把它加强成了更有力的 'makes no sense',展现出各分段之间评价性措辞更广的精确度区间。
    • GRAThen there's the work that keeps cities running — cleaning, security guards, delivery riders — which is paid like it's unskilled, when the city would actually stop within days without it.This sentence lists examples after a dash and then adds a 'when' clause. The 7.0/7.5 versions replace the general noun 'cleaning' with the more precise, technical term 'sanitation', a small but real lexical upgrade within the same structure.这句话在破折号后列举了例子,然后加了一个 'when' 分句。7.0/7.5版本把笼统的名词 'cleaning' 换成了更精确的专业术语 'sanitation',在同样的结构里做出了虽小但真实的词汇升级。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCThe pattern is fairly clear:The hedge 'fairly' softens the generalisation slightly, a natural spoken qualifier absent from the flatter 6.5 statement 'The pattern is clear'. The 7.5 version drops 'fairly' for a more confident, unhedged claim.缓和语 'fairly' 稍微软化了这个概括,是6.5中更平铺直叙的陈述 'The pattern is clear' 所没有的自然口语限定词。7.5版本去掉了 'fairly',使论断更自信、不加保留。
    • LRthe city would genuinely collapse within days without itThe intensifier 'genuinely' plus the stronger verb 'collapse' makes this claim more forceful than the plain 6.5 phrase 'the city would actually stop'. The 7.5 version keeps 'collapse' but drops 'genuinely', relying on word order for emphasis instead.加强语气的 'genuinely' 加上更有力的动词 'collapse',让这个论断比6.5中平实的短语 'the city would actually stop' 更有力。7.5版本保留了 'collapse',但去掉了 'genuinely',转而靠语序来强调。
    • GRAjobs where the value is obvious but the customer is the public rather than a company tend to get paid badly, because nobody profits from paying them wellThis sentence adds an explicit causal clause ('because nobody profits...') that the 6.5 version lacks entirely, giving a fuller explanation for the pattern rather than just stating it.这句话加了一个明确的因果分句('because nobody profits...'),这是6.5版本完全没有的,为这个规律给出了更充分的解释,而不只是陈述它。

    • LRwould collapse without it within daysThe word order here places 'without it' before the time phrase, a slightly more compact and natural-sounding arrangement than 7.0's 'would genuinely collapse within days without it', which needs the extra adverb 'genuinely' to carry similar force.这里的语序把 'without it' 放在了时间短语之前,是一种比7.0中 'would genuinely collapse within days without it' 略微更紧凑、听起来更自然的安排,后者需要额外的副词 'genuinely' 才能达到类似的力度。

Hugely different, in my family within just one generation. My father worked six days a week for most of his life, often without a written contract, and paid holiday only came along when he was already in his forties. I work five days, two of them from home, with health insurance and a contract a lawyer could actually read. Safety has improved a lot in factories and construction, though not everywhere. What's got worse, I think, is the boundary between work and life — my father's work ended when he left the building, but mine follows me home on my phone.

    • FCWhat's got worse, I think, is the boundary between work and lifeThe hedge 'I think' plus the spelled-out phrase 'between work and life' is clear but slightly wordy. The 7.0/7.5 versions replace 'I think' with 'I'd argue' and drop the explanatory phrase, letting the colon and example carry the meaning instead.缓和语 'I think' 加上完整拼出的短语 'between work and life' 清楚但略显啰嗦。7.0/7.5版本把 'I think' 换成了 'I'd argue',并去掉了这个解释性短语,改由冒号和例子来承担意思。
    • LRHugely differentThis is a plain, general opening adverb-adjective pair. The 7.0/7.5 versions replace it with the single, stronger adverb 'Enormously', which is more economical and slightly more formal in register.这是一对平实、笼统的开头副词-形容词组合。7.0/7.5版本把它换成了单个更有力的副词 'Enormously',更简洁,语域也略显正式。
    • GRAmy father's work ended when he left the building, but mine follows me home on my phoneThis final contrast is joined with the simple coordinator 'but'. The 7.0/7.5 versions replace 'but' with 'and', relying on the parallel structure itself to signal contrast, plus they add a further summarising sentence afterwards that this version lacks.这个最后的对比用了简单的并列连词 'but' 来连接。7.0/7.5版本把 'but' 换成了 'and',靠并列结构本身来传达对比意味,而且它们后面还加了一句这个版本没有的总结性句子。

Adds an explicit summarising sentence at the end: 'So conditions are physically far better and mentally somewhat worse'.在结尾加了一句明确的总结句:'So conditions are physically far better and mentally somewhat worse'。

Enormously, in my family within one generation. My father worked six days a week for most of his life, often without a written contract, and the idea of paid holiday arrived when he was already in his forties. I work five days, two of them from home, with health insurance and a contract a lawyer could genuinely read. Safety has improved hugely in factories and construction, though not everywhere. What's got worse, I'd argue, is the boundary: my father's work ended the moment he left the building, and mine follows me home on a phone. So conditions are physically far better and mentally somewhat worse.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI'd argue,This hedge is more confident and analytical than the plainer 6.5 hedge 'I think', signalling a considered judgement rather than a simple opinion. The 7.5 version keeps this exact hedge, showing it already suits the higher bands.这个缓和语比6.5中更平实的缓和语 'I think' 更自信、更具分析性,传达出一种经过深思熟虑的判断,而不只是简单的意见。7.5版本保留了完全相同的缓和语,说明它已经适合更高分段。
    • LRa contract a lawyer could genuinely readThe intensifier 'genuinely' sharpens the contrast with the father's undocumented work more than the plain 6.5 phrase 'a contract a lawyer could actually read', with 'genuinely' carrying slightly more formal weight than 'actually'.加强语气的 'genuinely' 比6.5中平实的短语 'a contract a lawyer could actually read' 更能凸显出与父亲那份没有合同文件的工作之间的对比,'genuinely' 比 'actually' 带有略微更正式的分量。
    • GRASo conditions are physically far better and mentally somewhat worse. This additional closing sentence draws an explicit generalisation from the examples given, a structural move the 6.5 answer doesn't make, instead ending on the example itself without stating the broader conclusion.这句额外的结尾从前面举的例子中得出了一个明确的概括,这是6.5的回答没有做的结构性处理,后者只是停在例子本身,没有陈述更广泛的结论。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCand the new fights are about time rather than safetyThis final clause extends the closing generalisation beyond where 7.0 stops, adding a further precise claim about the nature of modern workplace conflict that neither lower band includes.这个结尾分句把最后的概括延伸到了7.0停下的地方之外,加上了一个关于现代职场冲突本质的更精确的论断,这是两个较低分段都没有的内容。
    • LRa contract that a lawyer could readThe relative pronoun 'that' is used here in a slightly more formal, complete relative clause than 7.0's reduced version 'a contract a lawyer could genuinely read', showing a marginal grammatical formality upgrade even without a new intensifier.这里的关系代词 'that' 用在了一个比7.0中的缩减版本 'a contract a lawyer could genuinely read' 略微更正式、更完整的关系从句里,即使没有新的加强语气词,也展现出微小的语法正式度升级。
    • GRASo conditions are physically far better and mentally somewhat worse, and the new fights are about time rather than safety. This sentence adds a second coordinated clause after the one used at 7.0, extending the same summarising sentence with a further specific claim rather than stopping at the general observation.这句话在7.0使用的分句之后又加了一个并列分句,在同一句总结句上又延伸出一个更具体的论断,而不是止步于笼统的观察。

Lists the missing workplace skills with a plain 'like' clause rather than a colon-introduced list.用一个平实的 'like' 分句来列举缺失的职场技能,而不是用冒号引出的列表。

Put students into real workplaces, even for a short time. The single most useful thing my school did was send us to a workplace for a week — I spent mine in a print shop — and that one week taught me more about deadlines, customers and being useful than a whole year of careers lessons. Schools could also teach the things every job needs and no subject covers, like writing an email, presenting an idea, and working with someone lazy. Bringing in ordinary workers to talk honestly would help too, since students usually only hear from the successful ones. And letting students fail safely at something real prepares them better than any exam.

    • FCSchools could also teach the things every job needs and no subject covers, like writing an email, presenting an idea, and working with someone lazy. The examples are introduced with the informal connector 'like'. The 7.0/7.5 versions replace this with a colon, a more formal and economical way of presenting a list that follows a general claim.这些例子是用口语化的连接词 'like' 引出的。7.0/7.5版本把它换成了冒号,是一种更正式、更简洁的方式,来呈现跟在一个概括性论断后面的列表。
    • LRBringing in ordinary workers to talk honestly would help tooThis is a workable but slightly blunt phrase. The 7.0/7.5 versions expand it to 'people with ordinary jobs' / 'people who do ordinary jobs', which reads as a more natural, less compressed description.这是一个可行但略显生硬的短语。7.0/7.5版本把它扩展成了 'people with ordinary jobs' / 'people who do ordinary jobs',读起来是一种更自然、压缩程度更低的描述。
    • GRAthat one week taught me more about deadlines, customers and being useful than a whole year of careers lessonsThis comparative sentence is complete but relatively plain. The 7.0 version extends it with the added phrase 'than a whole year of careers lessons ever did', using 'ever did' for emphasis, a slightly more idiomatic comparative structure.这个比较句是完整的,但相对平实。7.0版本用加上的短语 'than a whole year of careers lessons ever did' 进行了扩展,用 'ever did' 来加强语气,是一种略微更地道的比较结构。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCBeyond that,This connector signals a shift to a new category of suggestion more formally than the plain 6.5 connector 'also', giving the answer a clearer sense of structure between its two main points.这个连接词比6.5中平实的连接词 'also' 更正式地标示出转向了一个新类别的建议,让回答在两大要点之间的结构感更清晰。
    • LRpeople with ordinary jobs to talk honestlyThis phrase is a more natural expansion of the compressed 6.5 phrase 'ordinary workers', giving the noun phrase a fuller, more idiomatic shape. The 7.5 answer varies this again slightly to 'people who do ordinary jobs', showing continued refinement at the top band.这个短语是对6.5中压缩短语 'ordinary workers' 更自然的扩展,让这个名词短语呈现出更完整、更地道的形态。7.5的回答又稍微变换了一下,变成了 'people who do ordinary jobs',展现出在最高分段的持续打磨。
    • GRAthan a whole year of careers lessons ever didThe addition of 'ever did' after the comparative intensifies the claim through a kind of echo structure, a more sophisticated device than the plain comparison at 6.5, which stops at 'than a whole year of careers lessons'.在比较结构后加上 'ever did',通过一种呼应式的结构加强了论断的语气,比6.5中平实的比较——停在 'than a whole year of careers lessons' 就结束——更精妙。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCwriting an email, presenting an idea, working in a group that includes someone lazy, handling moneyThis four-item list extends one step beyond 7.0's three-item version of the same list, adding 'handling money' as a further concrete, practical skill.这个四项的列表在7.0同一列表的三项基础上又延伸了一步,加上了 'handling money' 这一项具体、实用的技能。
    • LRpeople who do ordinary jobs to talk honestlyThis is a slightly more natural, idiomatic phrasing than 7.0's 'people with ordinary jobs', using the verb 'do' to describe the relationship between a person and their job more directly.这是一种比7.0中的 'people with ordinary jobs' 略微更自然、更地道的措辞,用动词 'do' 更直接地描述了一个人和自己工作之间的关系。
    • GRAthat one week taught me more about deadlines, customers and being useful than a year of careers lessonsThis drops the intensifying 'ever did' used at 7.0, relying instead on the plain comparative alone, which suggests a slightly more restrained, controlled register appropriate to the calmer tone of this band's closing paragraph.这里去掉了7.0中用来强调的 'ever did',转而只用平实的比较结构,展现出一种略微更克制、更有掌控力的语域,契合这个分段结尾段落更平静的语气。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCMoney and being seen, mostly. The opening summary uses the verb phrase 'being seen', which is functional but less precise than a single abstract noun. The 7.0/7.5 versions replace this with 'visibility', a tighter and more formal noun that matches the register of the rest of the answer.开头的总结用了动词短语 'being seen',有功能性,但不如一个单独的抽象名词精确。7.0/7.5版本把它换成了 'visibility',是一个更紧凑、更正式的名词,和回答其余部分的语域相匹配。
    • LRgets paid wellThis is a plain, general verb phrase. 为什么是这个分数

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCStatus follows the money and the cameras, in that order. This closing aphorism condenses the entire answer into one memorable, structured sentence, a device neither the 6.5 nor the 7.0 answer includes, giving the response a stronger sense of a deliberate rhetorical close.这句结尾的格言把整段回答浓缩成了一句令人印象深刻、结构分明的话,这是6.5和7.0的回答都没有的手法,让整个回答显得有一个更明显、刻意为之的修辞性收尾。
    • LRthe camerasThis metonymic use of 'cameras' to represent media visibility is more vivid and economical than the abstract noun 'visibility' used earlier in the same answer, showing a wider stylistic range within one response.用 'cameras' 来转喻媒体曝光度,比同一段回答前面用过的抽象名词 'visibility' 更生动、更简洁,展现出在一段回答内更宽的文体范围。
    • GRAStatus follows the money and the cameras, in that order. The phrase 'in that order' functions as a compact appositive modifying the whole preceding clause, a more sophisticated closing device than the plain final sentences used at 6.5 and 7.0, which end on the values point without this extra layer of commentary.短语 'in that order' 作为一个紧凑的同位语修饰前面整个分句,是一种比6.5和7.0中平实的结尾句更精妙的收尾手法,后两者都是在价值观这一点上结束,没有这层额外的点评。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCThere is one reasonable version of the argument:This lead-in uses the number word 'one' before 'reasonable version', which is functional but slightly clunky. The 7.0/7.5 versions drop 'one' and instead add the concessive tag 'though' at 7.0, a more natural way to flag a genuine counterpoint.这个引导句在 'reasonable version' 前用了数词 'one',有功能性,但略显笨拙。7.0/7.5版本去掉了 'one',7.0还加了一个让步性的附加语 'though',是一种更自然的方式来标示一个真正的反面观点。

The 7.5 version achieves a similar effect without the tag, relying on tone alone.这个让步性的附加语紧接在冒号前面,比6.5版本中平实的 'one reasonable version of the argument' 更自然地标示出真正转向了反面论证。7.5版本没有用这个附加语也达到了类似的效果,只靠语气本身。
    • LRexperience genuinely is often worth paying forThe intensifier 'genuinely' strengthens this concession more than the plain 6.5 phrase 'experience is often worth paying for', making the acknowledgement of the counter-argument feel more considered.加强语气的 'genuinely' 比6.5中平实的短语 'experience is often worth paying for' 更能强化这个让步,让对反面论证的承认显得更经过深思熟虑。

There is a reasonable version of the argument: older workers usually have more experience, more dependents and more to lose, and experience often is worth paying for. But that's a reason to pay experience, not birthdays. Systems that pay purely by seniority tend to push out ambitious young people and keep unmotivated older ones, and I've seen that hollow out companies.

    • FCThere is a reasonable version of the argument:This states the concession directly and economically, without the numeral 'one' used at 6.5 or the concessive tag 'though' used at 7.0, relying on the colon alone to signal the shift.这句话直接、简洁地陈述了让步,没有用6.5中的数词 'one',也没有用7.0中让步性的附加语 'though',只靠冒号本身来标示转折。
    • LRfifteen years her seniorThis idiomatic collocation for describing an age gap between two people is more natural and precise than the plain 6.5 phrase 'fifteen years older', and is not used at 7.0 either.这个用来描述两人年龄差的地道搭配比6.5中平实的短语 'fifteen years older' 更自然、更精确,7.0也没有用过这个说法。
    • GRAand I've seen that hollow out companiesThe plural 'companies' generalises the closing consequence beyond a single instance, a subtly more sweeping claim than 7.0's singular 'hollow out a company', suggesting a broader pattern rather than one specific case.复数形式 'companies' 把结尾的后果概括到了不止一个个案之外,是一个比7.0中单数的 'hollow out a company' 更微妙、更具概括性的论断,暗示的是一种更广泛的模式,而不是一个具体案例。
