The person who taught me a new skill when I was a child was my grandmother, who still lives in Hue.

When I was about nine years old, she taught me how to make banh beo, a small steamed rice cake that people eat in Hue. She taught me in her kitchen at home, on a Sunday morning when I was staying with her during the school holidays.

She showed me how to mix the rice flour with water, pour a little into each small dish, and steam them until they turned soft and slightly see-through. My first ones came out too thick and stuck to the dish, but she just smiled and showed me again without getting annoyed. She let me add the topping myself, the dried shrimp and crispy pork skin, even though I put too much on every single one.

I felt really happy and proud when I made a batch that actually looked like hers. It was one of the first times I felt I could make something with my own hands, not just eat what other people made. Now, whenever I go back to Hue and smell rice cakes steaming, I think of her patience that morning. I think that early feeling of making something carefully is part of why I enjoy design work today.
