6.5 分

The 6.5 answer covers each cue-card point with short, clear sentences and modest vocabulary ('quite impressive for someone her age'), giving an accurate but plain account typical of Band 6.5.这篇6.5分的答案用简短、清晰的句子和朴素的词汇('quite impressive for someone her age')覆盖了提示卡的每一个要点,给出了一个准确但朴素的叙述,是Band 6.5的典型特征。

I would like to talk about my grandmother, who lives in Hue with my parents. She is around eighty years old now, and I have known her my whole life, of course, since I grew up in the same house as her until I moved to Da Nang for work.

We do quite simple things together when I visit, mainly cooking. She still makes bún bò Huế from scratch every weekend, and she has taught me some of her recipes, although mine never taste quite the same as hers.

I admire her because she has stayed very active and independent even at her age. She still goes to the market herself most mornings and grows vegetables in a small garden behind the house, which I think is quite impressive for someone her age.

I also admire her patience. When I was younger and made mistakes in the kitchen, she never got angry, she just showed me calmly again. I think that patience is something I try to copy in my own work now, especially when I am training new people at my studio.

  • LRquite impressive for someone her ageThis is a common, everyday evaluative phrase used to praise the grandmother's independence, chosen over a more specific or varied description of what exactly she does. A 7.0 answer might add a particular detail instead; a 7.5 answer might use a more figurative way of expressing admiration. The plain phrasing here is accurate and functional, representing the safe, familiar lexical choices typical of Band 6.5.这是一个常见的、日常化的评价性短语,用来称赞祖母的独立性,而不是更具体或更多样地描述她具体做了什么。7.0分答案可能会转而加入一个具体的细节;7.5分答案可能会用更具比喻性的方式来表达敬佩之情。这里朴素的措辞是准确且功能性的,代表了Band 6.5典型的那种安全、熟悉的词汇选择。
  • GRAshe never got angry, she just showed me calmly againTwo short clauses are joined only with a comma, reporting the grandmother's reaction and the resulting action side by side without a connecting word to show their relationship explicitly. A 7.0 answer would likely link these with 'instead' or a similar connector; a 7.5 answer might restructure the pair entirely. This simple juxtaposition gives clear but minimal grammatical development, typical of Band 6.5.两个简短的分句仅用逗号连接,把祖母的反应和随后的行动并排呈现,没有用连接词来明确显示它们之间的关系。7.0分答案可能会用'instead'或类似的连接词把它们连接起来;7.5分答案可能会把这一对完全重新组织。这种简单的并置给出了清晰但极小的语法发展,是Band 6.5的典型特征。
  • FCI think that patience is something I try to copy in my own work nowThis sentence moves from describing the grandmother to a brief statement about the speaker's own present behaviour, connecting past and present in a single straightforward clause without much elaboration. A 7.0 answer would likely develop this connection with a specific example; a 7.5 answer might extend it into a fuller reflection. The plain, direct statement here gives accurate but minimal development, matching Band 6.5's storytelling style.这个句子从描述祖母转向了一个关于说话者当前自身行为的简短陈述,用一个直白的单一分句把过去和现在连接起来,没有太多展开。7.0分答案可能会用一个具体的例子来展开这层联系;7.5分答案可能会把它延展成一段更充分的反思。这里朴素、直接的陈述给出了准确但极小的展开,符合Band 6.5的讲故事风格。
7.0 分

The 7.0 answer adds reflection, such as noting the garden matters 'not just for her health but for how much it keeps her connected to daily life', and links ideas with connectors like 'honestly' and 'as many times as it took', while grammar stays accurate but not highly varied.这篇7.0分的答案加入了反思,比如指出花园的意义‘not just for her health but for how much it keeps her connected to daily life’,并用‘honestly’、‘as many times as it took’这类连接词把想法连接起来,同时语法保持准确,但没有高度的多样性。

I'd like to talk about my grandmother, who's in her early eighties now and still lives with my parents back in Hue. I've known her my entire life, obviously, since I grew up in that house until I moved to Da Nang for work a few years ago.

When I visit, we mostly end up cooking together — she still makes bún bò Huế completely from scratch every weekend, and over the years she's taught me a fair amount of it, though honestly mine never quite matches hers, no matter how carefully I follow her steps.

What I admire most is how active and independent she's stayed. She walks to the market herself most mornings and keeps a small vegetable garden behind the house, which at her age I think is genuinely impressive, not just for her health but for how much it keeps her connected to daily life.

Her patience is the other thing that stays with me. When I made mistakes in her kitchen as a child, she never raised her voice, she'd just show me again, as many times as it took. That's honestly the kind of patience I try to bring now when I'm training new designers at my studio.

  • FCnot just for her health but for how much it keeps her connected to daily lifeThe 'not just X but Y' structure adds a second, more interpretive reason for admiring the garden beyond the obvious physical-activity explanation, rather than stopping at the first, simpler reason. A 6.5 answer would likely stop after the health point; a 7.5 answer might develop this connection into a fuller generalisation about ageing. This layered reasoning is exactly the fuller development Band 7.0 rewards.‘not just X but Y’结构在明显的‘体力活动’解释之外,加入了第二个、更具解读性的理由来解释为什么敬佩这个花园,而不是停留在第一个更简单的理由上。6.5分答案可能会在提到健康这一点后就停止;7.5分答案可能会把这层联系发展成一个关于衰老更充分的概括。这种有层次的推理正是Band 7.0所奖励的那种更充分的展开。
  • LRno matter how carefully I follow her stepsThis concessive phrase adds a self-deprecating qualification to the cooking comparison, a mildly varied way of admitting failure rather than a flat statement like 'mine is not as good'. A 6.5 answer would likely use that plainer version; a 7.5 answer might extend the self-deprecation further with more vivid detail. The phrase shows natural, flexible vocabulary beyond the plainest choices, typical of 7.0.这个让步性短语为烹饪方面的比较加入了一层自我调侃式的限定,这是一种略微多样化的方式来承认失败,而不是像‘mine is not as good’这样平淡的陈述。6.5分答案可能会使用那种更朴素的版本;7.5分答案可能会用更生动的细节把这种自我调侃进一步延展。这个短语展现出超越最朴素选择的自然、灵活的词汇,是7.0分的典型特征。
  • GRAshe'd just show me again, as many times as it tookThe modal 'would' used habitually ('she'd just show me again') combined with the extending clause 'as many times as it took' captures a repeated past pattern with accurate, comfortable grammar rather than a single simple past-tense report. A 6.5 answer would likely use a single simple past sentence instead; a 7.5 answer might vary the structure further. This accurate habitual-past construction is typical of the grammatical range Band 7.0 targets.习惯性用法的情态动词‘would’(‘she'd just show me again’)结合延展性分句‘as many times as it took’,用准确、从容的语法捕捉到了一种反复出现的过去模式,而不是一个单一的简单过去时陈述。6.5分答案可能会转而使用一个单一的简单过去时句子;7.5分答案可能会进一步变换结构。这种准确的习惯性过去时结构是Band 7.0所瞄准的语法范围的典型特征。
7.5 分

The 7.5 answer uses vivid, precise phrasing ('a quiet refusal to slow down') and a reflective closing link to the speaker's own working life, the kind of developed, evaluative writing typical of Band 7.5.这篇7.5分的答案使用了生动、精确的措辞(‘a quiet refusal to slow down’)以及一个把说话者自身工作生活联系起来的反思性结尾,这是Band 7.5典型的那种成熟、评价性的写作。

The person I'd choose is my grandmother, who's well into her eighties now and still holding down the family house in Hue alongside my parents. I grew up under that same roof until I left for Da Nang, so in a sense I've known her longer than I've known myself.

What we do together, whenever I visit, almost always circles back to cooking. She still makes bún bò Huế entirely from scratch every weekend, and she's passed on a fair chunk of the recipe over the years, though mine, however carefully I follow her, never quite reaches the same depth of flavour.

What I admire most, honestly, is how fiercely independent she's stayed. She still walks to the market herself most mornings and tends a small vegetable patch behind the house, and at her age that feels less like a hobby and more like a quiet refusal to slow down.

But it's really her patience that's stayed with me. As a child, whenever I ruined something in her kitchen, she never once raised her voice — she'd simply show me again, however many times it took, without a trace of irritation. That kind of unhurried patience is something I catch myself actively trying to channel now, especially when I'm training the newer designers at my studio.

  • LRless like a hobby and more like a quiet refusal to slow downThis parallel 'less like X, more like Y' metaphor reframes an ordinary activity — gardening — as an act of quiet defiance against ageing, a genuinely less-common figurative move rather than a flat statement like 'I think it's impressive she still does this.' A Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would be far more likely to stop at the plain evaluation. The metaphor gives the description real emotional weight without ever stating the underlying admiration outright.这个平行的‘less like X, more like Y’隐喻,把一项普通的活动——园艺——重新框定成了一种对抗衰老的静默反抗,这是一种真正不常见的比喻手法,而不是像‘I think it's impressive she still does this’这样平淡的陈述。Band 6.5或7.0答案更可能会停留在朴素的评价上。这个隐喻为描述赋予了真正的情感分量,却从未直白地说出那份潜藏的敬佩。
  • GRAhowever carefully I follow her, never quite reaches the same depth of flavourThe fronted concessive clause 'however carefully I follow her' is placed before the main clause it modifies, a flexible, less predictable word order compared to the more standard 'no matter how carefully I follow her, mine never...'. A Band 6.5 or 7.0 speaker would be more likely to use a simpler, more conventional clause order. This controlled inversion also lets the sentence build toward its key image, 'depth of flavour', with more rhythm.前置的让步分句‘however carefully I follow her’被放置在它所修饰的主句之前,与更标准的说法‘no matter how carefully I follow her, mine never...’相比,这是一种更灵活、更难以预测的词序。Band 6.5或7.0的说话者更可能使用更简单、更常规的分句顺序。这种受控的倒装也让句子能以更强的节奏感,逐步推向它的核心意象——‘depth of flavour’。
  • FCI catch myself actively trying to channel nowThe construction 'catch myself [doing something]' signals an almost involuntary, ongoing habit rather than a deliberate one-off action, connecting the grandmother's patience directly to the speaker's present professional behaviour — the kind of evaluative, self-aware link that goes beyond simply describing admiration. A 6.5 or 7.0 answer would likely end with a plainer statement like 'I try to be patient too.' This closing move ties the whole anecdote together with genuine reflective depth.‘catch myself [doing something]’这个结构,标志着一种近乎不由自主的、持续的习惯,而不是一个刻意的一次性行为,把祖母的耐心直接和说话者当前的职业行为联系了起来——这是一种评价性的、自我觉察式的联系,超越了单纯描述敬佩之情的层面。6.5或7.0分答案可能会以像‘I try to be patient too’这样更朴素的陈述结尾。这个收尾动作用真正具有反思深度的方式,把整个小故事串联在了一起。

    6.5 分

The 6.5 answer lists activities one after another using the plain connector 'too' and 'also', ending in a short, general summary sentence about 'routine and company'.这篇6.5分的答案用朴素的连接词‘too’和‘also’把各项活动一个接一个罗列出来,最后以一句关于‘routine and company’的简短、笼统的总结句收尾。

A lot of older people I know enjoy gardening, tai chi or morning walks, activities that are gentle but still keep them active. My grandmother in Hue looks after a small vegetable patch behind the house, almost like a daily ritual, out there every morning before it gets too hot. Card games and gathering with friends for tea are common too, which gives them a regular chance to socialise. Many older people also enjoy passing on skills or stories to younger relatives, like cooking traditional dishes. Overall, it seems to be less about intensity and more about routine and company.

    • GRAMy grandmother in Hue looks after a small vegetable patch behind the house, almost like a daily ritual, out there every morning before it gets too hot.A single sentence with an inserted comparison and a trailing participial phrase, but built mostly from simple, direct clauses. A band 7.5 answer would likely compress this further into a tighter fronted structure.一个单句,插入了一个比较,尾部带有一个分词短语,但大体上是由简单、直接的分句构成的。7.5分答案很可能会把这进一步压缩成一个更紧凑的前置结构。
    • LRgives them a regular chance to socialiseA general, plain phrase. A higher band answer would likely choose a more specific word, such as 'a regular social outlet', rather than this everyday description.一个笼统、朴素的短语。更高分段答案可能会选用更具体的词,比如‘a regular social outlet’,而不是这种日常化的描述。
    • FCOverall, it seems to be less about intensity and more about routine and company.A short, generic closing sentence. A band 7 answer would more likely extend this summary with a further reflective phrase, such as adding 'a sense of purpose' to the list.一个简短、笼统的结尾句子。band 7答案更可能通过加入一个进一步的反思性短语来延展这个总结,比如在清单中加上‘a sense of purpose’。
    7.0 分

The 7.0 answer adds the reflective phrase 'as much about connection as the activity itself', and extends the closing list with 'a sense of purpose', showing more elaboration than the flatter band 6.5 summary.这篇7.0分的答案加入了反思性短语‘as much about connection as the activity itself’,并在结尾的清单中加入了‘a sense of purpose’,展现出比6.5分更平淡的总结更多的展开。

A lot of older people I know enjoy gardening, tai chi or morning walks, activities that are gentle but still keep them active and social. My grandmother in Hue tends a small vegetable patch behind the house and treats it almost like a daily ritual, out there every morning before the heat sets in. Card games and gathering with friends for tea are common too, giving them a regular social outlet. Many older people also enjoy passing on skills or stories to younger relatives, like cooking traditional dishes, which is as much about connection as the activity itself. 为什么是这个分数

    • LRgiving them a regular social outletA more precise, natural collocation than the plainer 'gives them a regular chance to socialise' phrasing at band 6.5, showing deliberate word choice appropriate to a more careful register.这是一个比band 6.5更朴素的‘gives them a regular chance to socialise’更精确、更自然的搭配,展现出与更审慎语域相符的深思熟虑的词汇选择。
    • GRAlike cooking traditional dishes, which is as much about connection as the activity itselfA 'which' clause with a balanced 'as much...as' comparison is added onto the main point, a more complex structure than the simple listing a band 6.5 answer used for the same idea.在主要论点上加入了一个带有平衡的‘as much...as’比较结构的‘which’从句,这是一种比band 6.5答案针对同样想法所使用的简单罗列更复杂的结构。
    • FCOverall, it seems to be less about intensity and more about routine, company and a sense of purpose. The closing summary adds a third element, 'a sense of purpose', extending the reflection slightly further than the two-part summary a band 6.5 answer gave for the same idea.结尾的总结加入了第三个要素——‘a sense of purpose’——把反思比band 6.5答案针对同样想法给出的两部分总结略微延展得更远。
    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer uses the vivid verb 'gravitate towards' and the idiomatic 'almost religiously', giving more precise, image-based vocabulary than the plainer band 7.0 phrasing throughout.这篇7.5分的答案使用了生动的动词‘gravitate towards’和地道的‘almost religiously’,全篇给出了比band 7.0更朴素的措辞更精确、更具画面感的词汇。

A lot of older people I know gravitate towards gardening, tai chi or morning walks, gentle activities that still keep them active and socially engaged. My grandmother in Hue tends a small vegetable patch behind the house almost religiously, out there every morning before the heat sets in. Card games and tea with friends are common too, offering a reliable social outlet that doesn't depend on much energy. Many older people also enjoy passing on skills or stories to younger relatives, cooking traditional dishes being a favourite, which is as much about connection as the activity itself. Overall, it seems to be less about intensity and more about routine, company and a quiet sense of purpose.

    • LRgravitate towards gardening, tai chi or morning walksA vivid, less-common verb choice ('gravitate towards') replacing the plainer 'enjoy gardening, tai chi or morning walks' phrasing at band 7.0, showing the kind of precise vocabulary expected at 7.5.一个生动、不常见的动词选择(‘gravitate towards’)取代了band 7.0更朴素的‘enjoy gardening, tai chi or morning walks’措辞,展现出7.5分所期望的那种精确词汇。
    • GRAcooking traditional dishes being a favourite, which is as much about connection as the activity itselfA participial phrase ('cooking...being a favourite') is inserted as an aside rather than introduced with 'like', a more compact and flexible construction than the equivalent phrase at band 7.0.一个分词短语(‘cooking...being a favourite’)作为插入语加入,而不是用‘like’引出,这是一种比band 7.0对应短语更紧凑、更灵活的结构。
    • FCa quiet sense of purposeThe added adjective 'quiet' gives the closing summary a more precise, evaluative finish than the plainer 'a sense of purpose' ending used at band 7.0.加入的形容词‘quiet’为结尾的总结带来了比band 7.0使用的更朴素的‘a sense of purpose’结尾更精确、更具评价性的收束。

The 6.5 answer gives a direct 'in some ways, yes' opinion with two contrasting sides, using the plain connectors 'also' and 'on the other hand' once each.这篇6.5分的答案给出了一个直接的‘in some ways, yes’观点,配上两个对比的方面,各用了一次朴素的连接词‘also’和‘on the other hand’。

In some ways, yes - healthcare has improved, so people live longer, healthier lives than earlier generations did. Technology has also made staying connected with family much easier - my grandmother video calls my sister in Ho Chi Minh City over Zalo almost every week now, which just wasn't possible when she was young. On the other hand, some things have become harder - living costs have risen, and living with extended family is less common now, which can leave older people more isolated. So overall, material and medical life has improved, but the social side is more mixed.

    • GRATechnology has also made staying connected with family much easier - my grandmother video calls my sister in Ho Chi Minh City over Zalo almost every week now, which just wasn't possible when she was young.A main claim followed by an example and a 'which' clause, joined in one long sentence with fairly simple connectors throughout. A band 7 answer would more likely tighten this into a shorter, punchier sentence.一个主要论断后面跟着一个例子和一个‘which’从句,全部用相当简单的连接词连接成一个长句。band 7答案更可能把这收紧成一个更短、更有力的句子。
    • LRliving with extended family is less common nowA plain, functional description. A higher band answer would likely use a more specific term, such as 'multigenerational households', instead of this general phrase.一个朴素、功能性的描述。更高分段答案可能会使用更具体的术语,比如‘multigenerational households’,而不是这个笼统的短语。
    • FCSo overall, material and medical life has improved, but the social side is more mixed.A short, flat closing sentence stating the conclusion directly. A 7.5 answer would more likely phrase this balance with more precise, less-common vocabulary.一个简短、平淡的结尾句子,直接陈述结论。7.5分答案更可能用更精确、更不常见的词汇来表达这种平衡。
    7.0 分

The 7.0 answer upgrades 'living with extended family' to the precise term 'multigenerational households', and adds the reflective hedge 'I'd say' to the closing conclusion, showing more careful phrasing than band 6.5.这篇7.0分的答案把‘living with extended family’升级为精确的术语‘multigenerational households’,并在结尾的结论中加入了反思性缓冲语‘I'd say’,展现出比band 6.5更用心的措辞。

In some ways, definitely - healthcare has improved dramatically, so people live longer and generally healthier lives than previous generations did. Technology has also made staying connected with family much easier; my grandmother video calls my sister in Ho Chi Minh City over Zalo almost weekly now, which simply wasn't possible when she was younger. On the other hand, some things have arguably gotten harder - the cost of living has risen, and traditional multigenerational households are less common now, which can leave some older people more isolated than they might have been decades ago. So overall, I'd say material and medical conditions have improved, but social conditions are a more mixed picture.

    为什么是这个分数

    • LRtraditional multigenerational households are less common nowA more precise, formal collocation than the plainer 'living with extended family is less common now' phrasing used at band 6.5, showing deliberate, topic-specific word choice.这是一个比band 6.5使用的更朴素的‘living with extended family is less common now’更精确、更正式的搭配,展现出经过深思熟虑、针对该话题的词汇选择。
    • GRATechnology has also made staying connected with family much easier; my grandmother video calls my sister in Ho Chi Minh City over Zalo almost weekly now, which simply wasn't possible when she was younger.A semicolon links the general claim to the specific example smoothly within one sentence, a more sophisticated construction than the dash-led sentence a band 6.5 answer used for the same content.一个分号把笼统的论断和具体的例子流畅地连接在一个句子里,这是一种比band 6.5答案针对同样内容所使用的破折号引导句更精妙的结构。
    • FCSo overall, I'd say material and medical conditions have improved, but social conditions are a more mixed pictureThe hedge 'I'd say' softens the closing conclusion, giving it a more considered, reflective tone than the flatter closing statement at band 6.5.缓冲语‘I'd say’软化了结尾的结论,赋予它比band 6.5更平淡的结尾陈述更经过深思熟虑、更具反思性的语气。
    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer uses the vivid verb 'transformed' and the compact fronted phrase 'something simply unimaginable', giving more precise, idiomatic vocabulary than the plainer band 7.0 wording.这篇7.5分的答案使用了生动的动词‘transformed’和紧凑的前置短语‘something simply unimaginable’,给出了比band 7.0更朴素的措辞更精确、更地道的词汇。

In some ways, definitely - healthcare has improved dramatically, so people now live longer, generally healthier lives than previous generations managed. Technology has also transformed staying connected with family; my grandmother video calls my sister in Ho Chi Minh City over Zalo almost weekly now, something simply unimaginable when she was younger. On the other hand, some things have arguably grown harder - the cost of living has climbed, and traditional multigenerational households are increasingly rare, leaving some older people more isolated than they might once have been. So overall, material and medical conditions have clearly improved, while the social picture is considerably more mixed.

    • LRTechnology has also transformed staying connected with familyA more vivid, precise verb choice ('transformed') than the plainer 'made staying connected with family much easier' phrasing at band 7.0, showing the kind of distinctive vocabulary expected at band 7.5.一个比band 7.0更朴素的‘made staying connected with family much easier’更生动、更精确的动词选择(‘transformed’),展现出band 7.5所期望的那种独特词汇。
    • GRAsomething simply unimaginable when she was youngerA compact noun-phrase fragment appended after a comma instead of a full 'which' relative clause, a more flexible, economical construction than the equivalent clause at band 7.0.一个紧凑的名词短语片段在逗号后附加上去,而不是一个完整的‘which’关系从句,这是一种比band 7.0对应分句更灵活、更简练的结构。
    • FCwhile the social picture is considerably more mixedThe closing contrast uses 'while' to fold the concession into the same sentence as the main claim, giving a more compact, polished finish than the separate 'but' clause used at band 7.0.结尾的对比用‘while’把让步融入了和主要论断相同的句子中,这比band 7.0使用的独立‘but’分句给出了更紧凑、更精致的收尾。

The 6.5 answer gives a direct 'not entirely' opinion, one example, and one explanation, using the plain connector 'but' once and everyday vocabulary like 'the hard parts' and 'talked about less'.这篇6.5分的答案给出了一个直接的‘not entirely’观点、一个例子和一个解释,用了一次朴素的连接词‘but’,以及‘the hard parts’、‘talked about less’这类日常词汇。

Not entirely, though there's a tendency towards that, sometimes called nostalgia. My grandmother talks fondly about her younger years in Hue, but she's also quite direct about the hard parts, like not having enough medicine or how much harder farm work was without modern equipment. I think what happens is that happy memories, especially ones tied to family, get told more often, making the past seem better than it was. Difficult memories aren't necessarily forgotten, just talked about less in everyday conversation. So it's more about which memories get shared than which ones are actually remembered.

    • GRAMy grandmother talks fondly about her younger years in Hue, but she's also quite direct about the hard parts, like not having enough medicine or how much harder farm work was without modern equipment. Two ideas joined only with 'but', a basic coordination pattern for a fairly long sentence. A band 7 answer would more likely divide this into a cleaner main clause plus a separate elaboration.两个想法仅用‘but’连接,这是一个相当长的句子的基础并列模式。band 7答案更可能把这拆分成一个更清晰的主句加上一个独立的展开。
    • LRthe hard partsA plain, general phrase. A higher band answer would likely use a more specific or formal word, such as 'hardships', to describe the same experiences.一个朴素、笼统的短语。更高分段答案可能会使用更具体或更正式的词,比如‘hardships’,来描述同样的经历。
    • FCSo it's more about which memories get shared than which ones are actually remembered.A flat closing sentence stating the conclusion directly. A 7.5 answer would more likely phrase this distinction more compactly, such as contrasting 'retelling' with 'remembering' directly.一个平淡的结尾句子,直接陈述结论。7.5分答案更可能更紧凑地表达这种区别,比如直接把‘retelling’和‘remembering’对比起来。
    7.0 分

The 7.0 answer upgrades 'the hard parts' to the more precise 'hardships', and introduces the formal term 'nostalgia bias', giving sharper, more topic-specific vocabulary than band 6.5.这篇7.0分的答案把‘the hard parts’升级为更精确的‘hardships’,并引入了正式术语‘nostalgia bias’,给出了比band 6.5更犀利、更针对该话题的词汇。

Not entirely, though there is a tendency towards that, often called nostalgia bias. My grandmother certainly talks fondly about her younger years in Hue, but she's also quite direct about the hardships back then, like limited access to medicine or how much harder farm work was without modern equipment. I think what happens is that emotionally significant memories, especially positive ones tied to family or milestones, tend to stay clearer and get retold more often, which creates an impression of a rosier past than what was actually lived. Difficult memories aren't necessarily forgotten, just less frequently shared in casual conversation. So it's more selective retelling than genuine selective memory, I'd say.

    为什么是这个分数

    • LRoften called nostalgia biasA precise, formal term that names the psychological pattern directly, more specific than the vaguer 'a tendency towards that' phrasing used at band 6.5.一个精确、正式的术语,直接给这种心理模式命名,比band 6.5使用的更模糊的‘a tendency towards that’更具体。
    • GRAemotionally significant memories, especially positive ones tied to family or milestones, tend to stay clearer and get retold more often, which creates an impression of a rosier past than what was actually livedA long sentence with an inserted appositive phrase and a 'which' clause explaining the effect, more layered than the shorter, simpler explanation a band 6.5 answer gave for the same idea.一个插入了同位语短语、并带有解释效果的‘which’从句的长句子,比band 6.5答案针对同样想法给出的更短、更简单的解释更有层次。
    • FCSo it's more selective retelling than genuine selective memory, I'd sayThe hedge 'I'd say' softens the closing distinction and the phrase 'selective retelling...selective memory' plays on the repeated word for effect, a more polished, reflective close than the flatter band 6.5 conclusion.缓冲语‘I'd say’软化了结尾的区分,而‘selective retelling...selective memory’这个短语则利用重复的词来制造效果,这比band 6.5更平淡的结论给出了更精致、更具反思性的收尾。
    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer uses the compact appositive 'limited access to medicine, farm work without modern equipment, that sort of thing' and the vivid verb 'aired', showing more compressed, idiomatic phrasing than the fuller band 7.0 sentences.这篇7.5分的答案使用了紧凑的同位语——‘limited access to medicine, farm work without modern equipment, that sort of thing’——和生动的动词‘aired’,展现出比band 7.0更完整的句子更压缩、更地道的措辞。

Not entirely, though there's a pull in that direction, often labelled nostalgia bias. My grandmother certainly speaks fondly of her younger years in Hue, but she's just as direct about the hardships back then, limited access to medicine, farm work without modern equipment, that sort of thing. What seems to happen is that emotionally charged memories, positive ones tied to family or milestones especially, stay vivid and get retold more often, leaving an impression of a rosier past than what was actually lived. Difficult memories aren't necessarily lost, just aired less in casual conversation. So it's really selective retelling rather than selective memory.

    为什么是这个分数

    • GRAlimited access to medicine, farm work without modern equipment, that sort of thingA string of appositive noun phrases capped with the idiomatic tag 'that sort of thing', replacing the fuller 'like limited access to medicine or how much harder farm work was' construction at band 7.0, a more compact and flexible structure.一串同位语名词短语以地道的标签‘that sort of thing’收尾,取代了band 7.0更完整的‘like limited access to medicine or how much harder farm work was’结构,这是一种更紧凑、更灵活的结构。

    为什么是这个分数

    • GRAMy grandmother's calm reaction to problems, compared to how anxious I get over fairly small things, has genuinely rubbed off on me a little over the years.A single sentence with an inserted comparison, but built around a fairly plain main clause. Differences in life experience are the main cause - older people grew up with economic conditions, technology and social norms, so their reactions can be hard to relate to. Communication styles are different as well; my grandmother prefers a phone call or a visit in person, while I usually just send a quick Zalo message, and that difference alone can create a feeling of distance even when both sides care. Technology gaps make this worse too, since older people are sometimes left out of online conversations. So most of the friction probably comes from not sharing the same context.

Honestly, I'd say slightly less, at least in everyday behaviour, though I don't think it's because of real disrespect. Life has just become busier and more focused on the individual, so habits like asking elders before big decisions or visiting regularly have become less common, especially among people who've moved to cities for work, like I have. That said, respect hasn't disappeared, it's just shown differently - helping parents with money, checking in by video call, instead of living under the same roof. So it might look like less respect on the surface, but I don't think that's true.

Life has just gotten busier and more individually focused, so the traditional habits of consulting elders on major decisions or visiting regularly have loosened somewhat, especially among people who've moved to cities for work, like I have. That said, respect hasn't disappeared, it's just expressed differently - through things like helping parents financially or checking in over video call rather than living under the same roof as before. So it might look like less respect on the surface, but I think it's more a change in form than a genuine decline in feeling.

    • LRthe traditional habits of consulting elders on major decisions or visiting regularly have loosened somewhatA more precise, natural collocation ('loosened somewhat') than the plainer 'have become less common' phrasing used at band 6.5, showing deliberate word choice.一个比band 6.5使用的更朴素的‘have become less common’更精确、更自然的搭配(‘loosened somewhat’),展现出深思熟虑的词汇选择。
    • GRASo it might look like less respect on the surface, but I think it's more a change in form than a genuine decline in feeling.A balanced 'more X than Y' contrast closes the sentence, a more developed structure than the simpler final clause a band 6.5 answer used for the same conclusion.一个平衡的‘more X than Y’对比结构为句子收尾,这是一种比band 6.5答案针对同样结论所使用的更简单的结尾分句更成熟的结构。
    • FCrespect hasn't disappeared, it's just expressed differentlyThe reflective reframing 'it's just expressed differently' softens the earlier claim, a small nuance typical of band 7.0 that a band 6.5 answer expresses in plainer, more direct terms.反思性的重新表述——‘it's just expressed differently’——软化了前面的论断,这是band 7.0典型的一个细微差别,band 6.5答案会用更朴素、更直接的说法来表达。
    7.5 分

The 7.5 answer uses the vivid verb 'migrated' and closes with the compact 'I'd call it', giving more precise, idiomatic phrasing than the fuller band 7.0 sentences.这篇7.5分的答案使用了生动的动词‘migrated’,并以紧凑的‘I'd call it’收尾,展现出比band 7.0更完整的句子更精确、更地道的措辞。

Honestly, I'd say slightly less, at least in everyday behaviour, though I doubt it stems from genuine disrespect. Life has simply gotten busier and more individually focused, so the old habits of consulting elders on major decisions or visiting regularly have loosened, especially among people who've moved to cities for work, as I have. That said, respect hasn't vanished, it's just migrated into different forms - helping parents financially, checking in over video call rather than living under the same roof as before. So it might look like less respect on the surface, but I'd call it a change in form rather than any genuine decline in feeling.

    • LRit's just migrated into different formsA vivid, less-common verb choice ('migrated') replacing the plainer 'expressed differently' phrasing used at band 7.0, exactly the kind of distinctive collocation expected at band 7.5.一个生动、不常见的动词选择(‘migrated’)取代了band 7.0使用的更朴素的‘expressed differently’措辞,正是band 7.5所期望的那种独特搭配。
    • GRAhelping parents financially, checking in over video call rather than living under the same roof as beforeA verbless list of examples stands in for the main clause, dropped in after the dash instead of the fuller 'through things like' construction at band 7.0, a more compact and flexible structure.一个没有动词的例子清单代替了主句,直接放在破折号之后,而不是band 7.0更完整的‘through things like’结构,这是一种更紧凑、更灵活的结构。
    • FCI'd call it a change in form rather than any genuine decline in feelingThe verb 'call' frames the closing judgement as a personal, confident label rather than the hedged 'I think it's more a change in form' phrasing at band 7.0, giving a more polished, deliberate finish.动词‘call’把结尾的评判框定成一个个人化、自信的标签,而不是band 7.0带有缓冲语气的‘I think it's more a change in form’措辞,给出了更精致、更用心的收尾。

I think so, yes. Most advertising, entertainment and even news tend to focus on younger audiences, since that's who advertisers usually want to reach, and older people often end up underrepresented or shown in fairly narrow, stereotyped ways when they do appear. This happens in my industry too - when we design app interfaces, the target user is almost assumed to be young and tech-comfortable, unless a client asks us to think about older users, which doesn't happen often. I lean more towards flexibility than having no fixed age at all. People age differently - some are still sharp and capable well into their seventies, like my grandmother, while others may want or need to stop working earlier for health reasons. A more flexible system, where people can choose to keep working or retire within a reasonable range, seems fairer than a strict cutoff that doesn't consider individual differences. • GRAa shrinking working-age population has to support a growing body of retirees, already a live concern in several ageing countriesA compact appositive noun phrase, 'already a live concern in several ageing countries', replaces the fuller 'which is already a concern in some countries' relative clause at band 7.0, a more economical construction.一个紧凑的同位语名词短语——‘already a live concern in several ageing countries’——取代了band 7.0更完整的‘which is already a concern in some countries’关系从句,这是一种更简练的结构。
    • FCtreating an older population as the new normal rather than a temporary adjustmentThe idiomatic phrase 'the new normal' gives the closing reflection a sharper, more contemporary finish than the plainer equivalent phrase used at band 7.0.地道的短语‘the new normal’为结尾的反思带来了比band 7.0使用的更朴素的对应短语更犀利、更具时代感的收尾。
