The description of guests and the grandmother's stories uses plain listing and a simple relative clause, accurate and clear but without much stylistic variety, typical of Band 6.5.

A party I remember was held after my younger sister, Phuong, graduated from university in Ho Chi Minh City. This was around June this year. She came back to Hue for a few days, and our family decided to celebrate at my uncle's restaurant there.

Quite a lot of people attended - my parents, my grandmother, my uncle's family, and a few close relatives and neighbours. It was a small but warm gathering, maybe about fifteen people in total. My uncle cooked several traditional dishes himself, like bun bo Hue and banh beo, and there was also a big cake for Phuong.

During the party, people mostly sat together, ate, and talked about Phuong's plans for the future. My grandmother kept telling old stories about when Phuong was a child, which made everyone laugh. Later in the evening, we took a lot of family photos together, since it is rare for all of us to be in the same place at the same time.

I felt really happy and proud that evening. Seeing my sister achieve something so important, and having the whole family together to celebrate it, made me appreciate my family more. It was a simple party, but it felt very special to me.

  • LRQuite a lot of people attended - my parents, my grandmother, my uncle's family, and a few close relatives and neighbours. The guest list uses entirely plain, high-frequency kinship nouns ("parents," "grandmother," "uncle's family," "neighbours") with no attempt at more specific or varied phrasing -- a higher band might individualize a guest or use a phrase like "the whole extended family." This flat, functional listing is exactly the "everyday, high-frequency words... at most one slightly less-common word" the Band 6.5 lexical target specifies, prioritizing clarity over elaboration.
  • GRAMy grandmother kept telling old stories about when Phuong was a child, which made everyone laugh. The "which" clause tacks a simple result ("made everyone laugh") onto the main statement with no further elaboration on why the stories were funny or what they contained. This is accurate but structurally basic, in line with Band 6.5's "mostly simple sentences plus a few basic complex ones" ceiling, where a single relative clause is about as ambitious as the grammar needs to get."which"引导的从句只是在主句上附加了一个简单的结果("made everyone laugh"),没有进一步说明这些故事为什么好笑或讲了什么内容。
  • FCI felt really happy and proud that evening. Two plain, common emotion adjectives ("happy," "proud") intensified only by "really," stated in a short standalone sentence with no attached example or reflection -- this direct, unembellished emotional statement matches Band 6.5's instruction to "answer directly... one clear reason or example is enough," and indeed the actual reason (seeing the sister succeed) follows only in the next sentence rather than being folded into this one.

The past perfect in 'someone had brought a small cake... which made her laugh out loud' and the flexible collocation 'nearly given up' show accurate, natural complex language without the more literary flourishes of Band 7.5.

One party I remember well was held after my close friend Mai finally passed the exam to become a licensed architect, which she'd been trying to pass for almost two years. This was back in March, and a group of us decided to celebrate at a small rooftop bar near the Han River the same evening she got the results.

There were around ten of us altogether, mostly friends from university plus a couple of her colleagues from the architecture firm she works at. Everyone showed up not long after work, still half in their office clothes, and we pushed a few tables together so the whole group could sit around one spot. We ordered a mix of grilled snacks and a few bottles of beer, and someone had brought a small cake with 'Congratulations, Architect Mai' written on it, which made her laugh out loud when she saw it.

Most of the evening was just people telling stories about how many times Mai had complained about that exam over the past two years, and she took it pretty well, laughing along with everyone else. A couple of her colleagues gave a short, slightly cheesy toast, and by around ten o'clock somebody put on music and a few people started dancing between the tables, even though there wasn't really enough space for it.

I felt genuinely happy for her that night, especially knowing how much effort she'd put in and how many times she'd nearly given up. Seeing her finally relax and enjoy the moment, instead of stressing about revision, made the whole evening feel worth celebrating.

  • GRAwhich she'd been trying to pass for almost two yearsThe relative clause uses the past perfect continuous ("she'd been trying to pass") to mark an action that continued right up to the point of the main clause ("finally passed") -- accurate handling of a genuinely tricky tense combination that a 6.5 speaker would likely sidestep ("she tried for two years and then passed"). This fits the "comfortable mix... generally accurate" Band 7.0 grammar target without the wider structural range (cleft sentences, conditionals) that would push it toward 7.5.这个关系从句使用了过去完成进行时("she'd been trying to pass")来标记一个一直持续到主句("finally passed")那一刻的动作——这是对一个确实棘手的时态组合的准确处理,6.5分的说话者很可能会绕开它,改说"she tried for two years and then passed"这样简单的表达。
  • GRAsomeone had brought a small cake with 'Congratulations, Architect Mai' written on it, which made her laugh out loudThree structures are layered into one sentence: past perfect ("had brought"), a reduced participial clause ("written on it"), and a non-defining relative clause ("which made her laugh out loud") -- adding detail without losing clarity, the comfortable-but-not-showy range the Band 7.0 grammar target rewards. A 6.5 version would likely break this into two or three short sentences; the quoted text on the cake also keeps the story vivid and specific rather than generic.
  • LRespecially knowing how much effort she'd put in and how many times she'd nearly given upTwo phrasal collocations, "put in" (effort) and "nearly given up," replace plainer equivalents like "worked hard" and "almost stopped trying" with more natural, idiomatic-adjacent phrasing -- the "few flexible... topic-specific" vocabulary the Band 7.0 lexical target calls for, common enough that it doesn't reach for the more deliberately figurative language reserved for 7.5. It also ties the party's emotional payoff directly back to the two years of exam struggle described earlier in the story.

The embedded aside about the manager ('who's usually pretty reserved') and the precise collocation 'hard-won achievements' both mark the more sophisticated grammatical and lexical range of Band 7.5.

One party that stands out for me was the celebration my team organized after we finally released our first major app for an overseas client. This was about nine months ago, back in September. The launch was a pretty big milestone because we'd spent almost half a year working late nights and weekends to get all the features finished and deal with last-minute bugs.

The party was held on the rooftop terrace of our office building, overlooking the Han River and the city lights. Everyone from our small studio was there-about fourteen of us, including our manager, Minh, and our client from Singapore who happened to be visiting Da Nang at the time. Some people even brought their partners or friends, so the group was bigger and livelier than usual.

We ordered a ton of food-mostly local dishes like bánh xèo, mì Quảng, and of course, plenty of cà phê sữa đá. There was music playing, mostly upbeat pop and a few 90s throwbacks, and someone had even set up a karaoke machine, which got a bit wild after a couple of beers. People took turns singing, and even our manager-who's usually pretty reserved-got up and sang a surprisingly decent version of a Trinh Cong Son song. We spent most of the night just chatting, eating, and laughing about all the stressful moments we'd survived together.

Honestly, I felt a real sense of relief and pride that night. It was such a contrast to all the pressure of the weeks before. Seeing everyone relaxed and genuinely happy, including our client, made me realise how important it is to take time to celebrate those hard-won achievements. It definitely made me more connected to my team.

  • GRAour manager-who's usually pretty reserved-got up and sang a surprisingly decent version of a Trinh Cong Son songThe dashes create a parenthetical relative clause ("our manager—who's usually pretty reserved—") inserted mid-sentence between subject and verb, a genuinely advanced structure because the speaker has to hold the main clause "got up and sang..." in suspension while adding the aside. A 7.0 speaker would more likely place this detail in a separate sentence ("Our manager is usually pretty reserved, but he got up and sang..."), which is safer but loses the single-breath fluency this interruption shows. The aside also does real narrative work, since it's what makes the karaoke moment feel surprising rather than just a list of who sang.两个破折号在句子中间、主语和动词之间插入了一个括注式的关系从句("our manager—who's usually pretty reserved—"),这是一个真正高阶的结构,因为说话者必须把主句"got up and sang..." Band 7.0的说话者更可能把这个细节放进单独一句话里("Our manager is usually pretty reserved, but he got up and sang..."),这样更保险,但会失去这种插入式表达所展现的一气呵成的流利感。
  • LRIt was such a contrast to all the pressure of the weeks before."Contrast" is chosen over a more obvious word like "different" or "change," and it's the more accurate noun because it captures an opposition between two states — pressure and relief — rather than a simple change over time. A 7.0 answer would likely settle for "it was really different from the weeks before," which is correct but flatter, while a 6.5 answer would almost certainly use "different." Here the precise word choice lands exactly on the emotional pivot of the story, the shift from the stressful launch to the celebratory party."Contrast"被选用来代替更显而易见的词如"different"或"change",这是一个更精准的名词,因为它捕捉到的是两种状态之间的对立——压力与释然——而不只是随时间发生的简单变化。Band 7.0的答案很可能只会说"it was really different from the weeks before",这没错但更平淡,而Band 6.5的答案几乎肯定会用"different"。
  • LRmade me realise how important it is to take time to celebrate those hard-won achievements"Hard-won" is a compound modifier that isn't high-frequency vocabulary but also isn't obscure — it's precisely the kind of natural collocation a fluent speaker reaches for without sounding like they're showing off, which is what the 7.5 descriptor calls for. A plainer band would say "achievements we worked hard for," which is grammatically fine but loses the economy of the compound adjective. It's also thematically apt, since the whole story is about months of late nights culminating in one release, so the collocation directly encodes the effort described earlier in the answer."Hard-won"是一个复合修饰词,虽不是高频词汇,但也不算生僻——这正是一个流利的说话者会自然而然地想到、而不会显得刻意炫耀的搭配,这正是Band 7.5描述所要求的。

The 6.5 answer gives a direct opinion with one simple supporting reason, using the plain connector 'so' to close, and modest, repeated vocabulary like 'special' and 'nice'.6.5分的回答给出了一个直接的观点,加上一个简单的支撑理由,用平实的连接词'so'收尾,并使用了像'special'和'nice'这样朴素、重复的词汇。

Yes, I think food is quite important at a party. It gives people something to do, especially at the start when nobody is talking much yet. Without food, a party can feel a bit boring, even if the people are nice. For example, when we had a birthday party for a colleague at the office, we just bought some bánh mì and drinks, but it still made the party feel special. So food isn't the main thing, but it really helps.

    • FCSo food isn't the main thing, but it really helps.A short, plain closing sentence using 'but' as the only linking device. A band 7 answer would likely soften this with a discourse marker like 'honestly' or 'I'd say', and a 7.5 answer would round it off with a more reflective, evaluative remark rather than a flat statement.
    • LRa bit boringA very common, general adjective doing the descriptive work. A higher band would reach for something more specific or idiomatic, such as 'flat' or 'lacking energy', rather than the all-purpose 'boring'.
    • GRAFor example, when we had a birthday party for a colleague at the office, we just bought some bánh mì and drinks, but it still made the party feel special.A single coordinated sentence joined with 'but', with no subordination or embedded clauses. A 7.5 answer would likely compress this into a participial or fronted structure instead of a plain subject-verb chain.

The 7.0 answer opens with the natural spoken marker 'Honestly' and builds a conditional clause ('if there's nothing to eat...'), showing more reflection than a flat opinion while still staying fairly direct.7.0分的回答以自然的口语标记'Honestly'开头,构建了一个条件分句('if there's nothing to eat...'),比一个平淡的观点展现出更多反思,同时依然相当直接。

Honestly, yes — food matters more than people usually admit. It gives everyone something to do and talk about before the conversation really gets going, and if there's nothing to eat, the whole party can feel a little flat, no matter how good the company is. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, though: for a colleague's birthday at the office, we just ordered bánh mì and some drinks, and that alone was enough to make it feel festive rather than an ordinary after-work gathering. So while friendship is obviously the real point, food plays a bigger supporting role than we tend to notice.

    • FCHonestly, yesA natural spoken opener that signals a considered, slightly self-aware stance rather than a bare 'yes'. A 6.5 answer would simply state the opinion; a 7.5 answer would likely embed a similar attitude marker mid-sentence instead of using it as a standalone opener.
    • GRAand if there's nothing to eat, the whole party can feel a little flat, no matter how good the company isA conditional clause combined with a concessive 'no matter how' clause in the same sentence, showing more grammatical range than the simple coordinated sentences typical of band 6.5. A 7.5 answer would likely compress this further into a non-finite construction.
    • LRordinary after-work gatheringA moderately precise collocation, more specific than a plain word like 'party' or 'boring'. It's not yet the more idiomatic, less-common phrasing a 7.5 answer would reach for, but it shows deliberate word choice beyond the most basic vocabulary.

The 7.5 answer opens with a fronted imperative-like clause, 'Strip a party of food entirely...', and closes with the evaluative aside 'I'd argue', both signs of more flexible, idiomatic control than the plainer band 7.0 phrasing.7.5分的回答以一个前置的、类似祈使句的分句开头,'Strip a party of food entirely...',并以评价性的插入语'I'd argue'收尾,这两点都是比7.0那更平淡的措辞更灵活、更地道的掌控力的标志。

Pretty important, I'd say — food gives people something to do with their hands and their attention before conversation has properly warmed up. Strip a party of food entirely and it can feel oddly flat, no matter how good the company is. It needn't be elaborate, either: gathered around nothing more than bánh mì and a few drinks for a colleague's office birthday, we still turned an ordinary after-work hangout into something that felt genuinely festive. There's also something about food that physically pulls people together around a table, which conversation alone rarely manages. So while friendship is really the whole point of the evening, food, I'd argue, does more of the quiet, supporting work than most of us give it credit for.

    • GRAStrip a party of food entirely and it can feel oddly flatA fronted imperative-style clause used hypothetically instead of the more ordinary 'if there's nothing to eat' conditional a band 7.0 answer would use. This kind of compressed, flexible structure is characteristic of the higher band.
    • LRgathered around nothing more thanA less-common, slightly literary collocation used to downplay the modest food on offer, going beyond the safer 'it doesn't have to be anything fancy' phrasing a 7.0 answer might use.
    • FCfood, I'd argue, does more of the quiet, supporting work than most of us give it credit forAn evaluative closing touch with 'I'd argue' embedded mid-clause rather than used as a simple opener, giving a more compact, confident finish than the more straightforward closing sentence of the band 7.0 answer.

The 6.5 answer states a direct 'it depends' position with a simple reason and one plain example, using the basic connector 'because' twice and a repeated closing structure ('home is better... public place is better').6.5分的回答用一个简单的理由和一个平实的例子,表明了一个直接的'it depends'立场,重复使用了基本连接词'because'两次,以及一个重复的结尾结构('home is better... public place is better')。

I think it depends on how many people are coming. A home is more relaxed because you can play your own music and stay as late as you like. But homes are usually small, so when my team wanted to celebrate finishing a project, we went to a rooftop bar near the river instead, because about twelve people would not fit in anyone's apartment. Also, nobody has to clean up afterwards in a public place, which is nice. So for a small group, home is better, but for a bigger party, a public place is better.

    • GRAA home is more relaxed because you can play your own music and stay as late as you like.A simple main clause plus one 'because' clause, the most basic way to give a reason. A band 7 answer would likely link two ideas together with a comma and 'which', showing more range.
    • LRwhich is niceA very general, low-information closing phrase. A higher band answer would replace this with a more specific evaluative word, such as 'underrated' or 'convenient'.
    • FCSo for a small group, home is better, but for a bigger party, a public place is better. The closing sentence repeats the same 'is better' structure twice rather than varying the phrasing, which is typical of band 6.5's more mechanical cohesion. A 7.5 answer would likely vary the second half instead of repeating the exact frame.

The 7.0 answer uses the natural connector 'Honestly' and a 'which is exactly why...since' clause to link the space problem to the actual example, showing more joined-up reasoning than a simple 'so' list.7.0分的回答用了自然的连接词'Honestly',以及一个'which is exactly why...since'分句,把空间问题和实际的例子连接了起来,展现出比一个简单的'so'列表更连贯的推理。

Honestly, it depends on the size and the mood you want. A home feels more relaxed and personal — you can control the music and stay as late as you like, without feeling like you have to be 'on' the way you sometimes do in public. But homes have their limits, which is exactly why our team's project-launch celebration ended up at a rooftop bar by the river rather than someone's flat, since a dozen of us plus partners just would not have fit. Public places also mean nobody has to clean up afterwards, which is genuinely underrated. So I'd say home works for a small, close group, and a public spot for anything bigger.

    • GRAwhich is exactly why our team's project-launch celebration ended up at a rooftop bar by the river rather than someone's flat, since a dozen of us plus partners just would not have fitA layered sentence combining a 'which' clause with a further 'since' clause, connecting cause and example in one structure. A band 6.5 answer would likely split this into two short separate sentences instead.
    • LRgenuinely underratedA moderately natural collocation showing more precise evaluation than the plain 'which is nice' a lower band would use, though it stops short of the more vivid, idiomatic phrasing a 7.5 answer typically reaches for.
    • FCwithout feeling like you have to be 'on' the way you sometimes do in publicA natural, slightly reflective aside that adds nuance to the opinion rather than just stating it. A 6.5 answer would likely omit this kind of qualifying detail altogether.

The 7.5 answer opens with the fronted, compact 'Space, though, is the obvious catch' and uses a vivid image, 'nobody's left scrubbing plates at midnight', in place of the more generic phrasing lower bands rely on.7.5分的回答以前置、紧凑的'Space, though, is the obvious catch'开头,并用了一个生动的画面,'nobody's left scrubbing plates at midnight',来代替低分档所依赖的更笼统的措辞。

It really comes down to scale and mood, I'd say. A home wins on intimacy — you control the music, linger as late as you like, free from the low-grade pressure to be 'on' that public spaces bring. Space, though, is the obvious catch, which is precisely why our team's project-launch bash ended up on a rooftop bar overlooking the river rather than crammed into someone's flat, a dozen of us plus partners never going to fit comfortably at my place. Public venues carry an underrated perk too: nobody's left scrubbing plates at midnight. So for a small, close-knit gathering, home has the edge; for anything larger, a public spot is simply the more sensible call.

    • GRAa dozen of us plus partners never going to fit comfortably at my placeA compressed participial-style clause with no finite verb, tacked onto the sentence instead of a full 'since we would not have fit' clause. This flexible, economical grammar is characteristic of the higher band.
    • LRnobody's left scrubbing plates at midnightA vivid, specific image replacing the plainer 'nobody has to clean up' phrasing used at lower bands, showing the kind of precise, slightly idiomatic word choice that marks band 7.5.
    • FCSpace, though, is the obvious catchA short, fronted evaluative clause that pivots the argument compactly. A band 7.0 answer would more likely use a fuller 'But homes have their limits' sentence instead of this terser, more idiomatic pivot. But homes have their limits'句子,而不是这个更简洁、更地道的转折。

The 6.5 answer gives a direct 'not better, just different' position with one simple contrast ('friends... but family...'), using the plain connector 'but' twice and everyday vocabulary like 'lively' and 'meaningful'.6.5分的回答给出了一个直接的'not better, just different'立场,加上一个简单的对比('friends... but family...'),重复使用了平实的连接词'but'两次,以及像'lively'和'meaningful'这样的日常词汇。

I don't think one is really better, just different. Parties with friends are more relaxed because you don't worry about saying the wrong thing in front of an older relative. But family parties have their own warmth, like when my grandmother tells the same stories every Tet in Hue, and it never gets boring. Friends' parties are probably more lively, but family parties feel more meaningful over time. So I don't think enjoyment is the right way to compare them.

    • FCI don't think one is really better, just different.A short, direct opening statement of position with no hedging language. A 7.0 answer would likely soften this with a marker like 'honestly', and a 7.5 answer would phrase the same idea more compactly, such as calling them different 'registers' of enjoyment.
    • GRAFriends' parties are probably more lively, but family parties feel more meaningful over time. Two short independent clauses joined only by 'but', with no subordination. A higher band would likely link these ideas with a more varied structure, such as a comma-separated contrast within one flowing sentence.
    • LRnever gets boringA simple, very common phrase. A band 7.5 answer would likely reach for a more precise or idiomatic alternative, such as 'never wears thin', to describe the same idea.

The 7.0 answer inserts the spoken aside 'honestly' mid-sentence rather than as a simple opener, and links ideas with 'since' and 'though', giving more natural flow than the shorter, choppier band 6.5 sentences.7.0分的回答把口语化的插入语'honestly'插入句子中间,而不是当作一个简单的开头语,并用'since'和'though'连接想法,比6.5那些更短、更断续的句子展现出更自然的语流。

I wouldn't say one is definitively better, honestly, just different in feel. Parties with friends tend to be a bit more relaxed and unpredictable, since there's less worry about saying the wrong thing in front of an older relative. Family parties, though, carry a different kind of warmth — the sort you get from hearing my grandmother tell the same stories every Tet in Hue, which somehow never gets old. Friends' parties are probably livelier on average, but family gatherings feel more meaningful over time, even if quieter. So I'd say it isn't really about which is more enjoyable, more that they meet different needs.

    • FCI wouldn't say one is definitively better, honestly, just different in feel. The discourse marker 'honestly' is placed inside the sentence rather than tacked on the front, giving a more natural, conversational rhythm. A band 6.5 answer would more likely place a similar marker plainly at the start, if it used one at all.
    • GRAParties with friends tend to be a bit more relaxed and unpredictable, since there's less worry about saying the wrong thing in front of an older relative.A main clause extended with a 'since' clause explaining the reason within the same sentence, rather than the separate short sentences a band 6.5 answer would use for the same content.
    • LRwhich somehow never gets oldA natural, idiomatic-leaning phrase that is a step up from the plainer 'never gets boring', though it stops short of the more distinctive, less-common phrasing a 7.5 answer would choose.

The 7.5 answer opens with the compact metaphor 'different registers of enjoyment' and closes on the idiomatic 'wrong yardstick', showing more precise, less-common vocabulary than the plainer phrasing of the lower bands.7.5分的回答以紧凑的比喻'different registers of enjoyment'开头,并以地道的'wrong yardstick'收尾,展现出比低分档那些更平淡的措辞更精准、更不常见的词汇。

I wouldn't call one definitively better — they're simply different registers of enjoyment. Gatherings with friends tend to be looser and more unpredictable, free of that faint worry about saying the wrong thing in front of an older relative. Family occasions carry a different kind of warmth instead, the sort you get watching my grandmother retell the same stories every Tet in Hue, which somehow never wears thin. Friends' parties probably edge it on sheer liveliness, but family gatherings, quieter as they are, tend to deepen in meaning the longer you sit with them. So enjoyment, I'd argue, is really the wrong yardstick — they're satisfying two different needs rather than competing for the same one.

    • LRdifferent registers of enjoymentA precise, slightly literary collocation used instead of the plain 'different in feel' phrasing at lower bands, marking the kind of less-common word choice expected at 7.5.
    • GRAfamily gatherings, quieter as they are, tend to deepen in meaning the longer you sit with themAn inserted concessive phrase, 'quieter as they are', embedded mid-sentence without its own subject-verb pair, plus a compressed comparative ending. This is more flexible than the plain 'but' contrast a band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would use.
    • FCenjoyment, I'd argue, is really the wrong yardstickAn evaluative aside, 'I'd argue', embedded inside the closing clause rather than used as a simple sentence opener, giving a more compact, confident finish than the more straightforward closing line of the band 7.0 answer.

    • FCMid-Autumn Festival is popular too, especially with children, because of the lanterns and mooncakes.A short, self-contained sentence added to a simple list, connected only by 'too'. • LRbig eventsA very general, plain description of weddings. A higher band answer would likely use a more specific word such as 'major' events, paired with a more precise detail.
    • GRAFamilies get together, eat special food, and celebrate for several days.A simple list of three verbs joined with commas and 'and', the most basic way to add detail. Tet, the lunar new year, dwarfs everything else — sprawling family reunions, elaborate food, days of celebration rather than one evening. Mid-Autumn Festival runs a close second in popularity, especially among children, thanks to the lanterns and mooncakes. Death anniversaries are marked with equal seriousness, honouring ancestors in a way that isn't celebratory in the cheerful sense but is treated with real weight nonetheless. More recently, milestones such as graduations or promotions have crept into the calendar too, usually marked with something smaller among friends or colleagues.

I think clothes are fairly important, but it depends on the event. For something formal like a wedding, wearing nice clothes shows respect for the hosts, so most people make an effort. For a casual party, it matters less, but people still dress a little better than normal. I remember wearing an áo dài to a friend's wedding in Hue, and it really changed how I felt during the ceremony - I felt more part of it. So clothes aren't the main thing, but they help make the day feel special.

    • GRAFor something formal like a wedding, wearing nice clothes shows respect for the hosts, so most people make an effort.A single sentence with one 'so' clause showing cause and result, the most basic way of linking ideas. A band 7 answer would likely combine this reasoning with a second detail in the same sentence instead of stopping there.

    • FCI remember wearing an áo dài to a friend's wedding in Hue, and it really changed how I felt during the ceremony - I felt more part of it.The idea is stated twice in slightly different words ('changed how I felt' then 'I felt more part of it'), a repetitive way of adding emphasis typical of band 6.5. I remember wearing an áo dài to a close friend's wedding in Hue, and it genuinely changed how I felt during the ceremony, more part of the occasion than if I'd just worn regular clothes. So while clothes aren't the core of a celebration, they do help set the mood.

    • FCalmost as a way of marking the day as different from an ordinary oneA reflective qualifying phrase that adds a layer of interpretation to a simple observation, typical of band 7.0's mild elaboration. A 6.5 answer would likely just state 'people still dress a little better' without this extra reasoning. 6.5的回答很可能只会陈述'people still dress a little better',而不会加上这层额外的推理。

Fairly important, I'd say, though how much depends heavily on the occasion. At something formal, like a wedding, what you wear signals respect for the day and the hosts, so most people make a real effort rather than a token one. At a casual gathering among friends, it matters less, though people still tend to dress a notch above the everyday, almost marking the day out as special rather than ordinary. Slipping into an áo dài for a close friend's wedding back in Hue genuinely shifted how I felt during the ceremony — far more woven into the occasion than regular clothes would have left me. So while clothing isn't the heart of a celebration, it does quietly help set the right mood.

    • LRa notch above the everydayAn idiomatic, image-based collocation replacing the plainer 'dress a little better than usual' phrasing used at lower bands, showing the kind of less-common vocabulary expected at 7.5.
    • FCfar more woven into the occasion than regular clothes would have left meA compact evaluative comparison folded into the same sentence as the anecdote, rather than a separate summarising sentence. This tighter integration of reflection and example is characteristic of the higher band's closing touches.

The 6.5 answer gives a direct opinion ('moderation is a good idea') with one clear reason and one plain example, using the simple connectors 'but' and 'because' and ending in a short, direct conclusion.6.5分的回答给出了一个直接的观点('moderation is a good idea'),加上一个清晰的理由和一个平实的例子,使用了简单的连接词'but'和'because',并以一个简短、直接的结论收尾。

I think moderation is a good idea, but I wouldn't say people should just save instead of celebrating. Some events deserve extra spending, like a wedding, because they only happen once and the memory lasts a long time. But I do think many people spend too much because of social pressure, trying to match what other people did, which isn't a good reason. A friend of mine kept her thirtieth birthday small and simple, just dinner with six people, and she said it felt more meaningful than a big expensive party. So spending wisely is better than just spending less.

    • FCI think moderation is a good idea, but I wouldn't say people should just save instead of celebrating.A direct statement of opinion followed by one 'but' clause, with no softening language. A band 7 answer would likely open with a spoken marker like 'honestly' to add a more reflective tone.
    • GRASome events deserve extra spending, like a wedding, because they only happen once and the memory lasts a long time.A main clause with a single 'because' clause explaining the reason, joined simply with 'and'. A higher band would likely combine this reasoning with a further idea in the same sentence using more varied linking.
    • LRisn't a good reasonA plain, general evaluative phrase. A band 7.5 answer would likely replace this with a more precise or idiomatic phrase, such as calling it 'exactly the wrong reason'.

The 7.0 answer uses the natural connector 'That said' and the mild collocation 'genuinely deserve', plus a comparative conditional ('than a big party would have'), showing more reflective linking than the shorter band 6.5 sentences.7.0分的回答用了自然的连接词'That said'和温和的搭配'genuinely deserve',加上一个比较式的条件句('than a big party would have'),比6.5那些更短的句子展现出更具反思性的连接。

I think moderation makes sense, but I wouldn't go as far as saving instead of celebrating altogether. Some events genuinely deserve a bit of extra spending, since they only happen once, like a wedding or a big birthday, and the memory tends to outlast the cost. That said, I'd say a lot of people overspend out of social pressure rather than genuine desire, trying to match what others did, which seems like the wrong reason to spend. A close friend of mine kept her thirtieth birthday small, just dinner with six people, and told me afterwards it felt more meaningful than a big party would have. So thoughtful spending, not necessarily less spending, seems like the better goal.

    • FCThat said, I'd say a lot of people overspend out of social pressure rather than genuine desireThe connector 'That said' signals a natural pivot in the argument, more conversational than the plain 'But' a band 6.5 answer relies on for the same shift.
    • LRgenuinely deserve a bit of extra spendingA mild collocation ('genuinely deserve') that is more natural and specific than the plain 'deserve extra spending' phrasing at band 6.5, though it stops short of the more vivid vocabulary a 7.5 answer would use.
    • GRAit felt more meaningful than a big party would haveA comparative structure using an unreal conditional ('would have') rather than the flatter comparison a band 6.5 answer made with 'more meaningful than a big expensive party', showing slightly more grammatical range.一个使用虚拟条件句('would have')的比较结构,而不是6.5回答用'more meaningful than a big expensive party'做出的那个更平淡的比较,展现出稍微更广的语法范围。

The 7.5 answer opens with the compact metaphor 'the right instinct' and uses the idiomatic 'open your wallet' and 'expensive blowout', giving markedly more vivid, precise vocabulary than the plainer band 7.0 phrasing.7.5分的回答以紧凑的比喻'the right instinct'开头,并用了地道的'open your wallet'和'expensive blowout',带来了比7.0那更平淡的措辞明显更生动、更精准的词汇。

Moderation strikes me as the right instinct, though I wouldn't go as far as saving instead of celebrating altogether. Certain events genuinely earn the extra spend — a wedding, a milestone birthday — precisely because they happen once, and the memory tends to outlive the cost by decades. What I'd push back on is spending driven by social pressure rather than genuine desire, people quietly trying to match whatever the last person did, which strikes me as exactly the wrong reason to open your wallet. A close friend kept her thirtieth deliberately small, just dinner with six people, and told me afterwards it felt far more meaningful than an expensive blowout would have. So thoughtful spending, rather than simply less spending, seems like the better target to aim for.

    • LRexactly the wrong reason to open your walletAn idiomatic phrase replacing the plainer 'wrong reason to spend' used at lower bands, showing the kind of precise, image-based vocabulary that marks band 7.5.
    • GRAWhat I'd push back on is spending driven by social pressure rather than genuine desireA fronted cleft-like structure ('What I'd push back on is...') used to emphasise the point, a more flexible construction than the straightforward 'But I do think' opener a band 6.5 answer would use.一个前置的、类似分裂句的结构('What I'd push back on is...'),用来强调这一点,是一个比6.5回答会使用的直白的'But I do think'开头语更灵活的结构。
    • FCthe memory tends to outlive the cost by decadesA compact evaluative flourish that sharpens a general claim with a specific detail ('by decades'), giving the sentence a more finished, considered feel than the plainer equivalent claim at lower bands.

Mostly to build a sense of shared identity and pride, I think. A national day gives the whole country a chance to think about its history and achievements together, which feels more powerful than a small private party. It also brings different generations together, because older people can tell younger people stories about the past during the celebrations. Big public events like parades or fireworks also create a shared memory that people can talk about later. It can also help tourism and local business for a short time, which is a nice bonus.

    • FCIt also brings different generations together, because older people can tell younger people stories about the past during the celebrations.Another point added to the list using 'also', the same connector repeated across the answer. A higher band would vary this linking device across the different reasons rather than reusing it.
    • GRAbecause older people can tell younger people stories about the past during the celebrationsA single 'because' clause with a simple subject-verb-object structure. A band 7.5 answer would likely compress this into a participial phrase instead of a full finite clause.
    • LRnice bonusA very general, informal closing phrase. A higher band answer would likely choose a more specific evaluative word, such as 'practical bonus', to close the point.

Mostly to build a shared sense of identity and pride, I'd say. A national day gives an entire country a reason to pause and reflect on its history and achievements together, which is powerful on a scale that smaller, private celebrations can't really match. It also brings generations together, with older people passing on stories about the past to younger ones during the celebrations, which helps keep a sense of continuity alive. Large public events, like parades or fireworks, create a kind of collective memory too, something people can say they experienced together even as strangers. And economically, these celebrations can give tourism and local business a short-term boost, which is a practical bonus alongside the symbolic one.

Largely to forge a shared sense of identity and pride, I'd say. A national day gives an entire country license to pause and reflect on its history and achievements together, on a scale no private celebration could ever hope to match. It also pulls generations together — older people passing down stories of the past to younger ones amid the festivities, which helps preserve a thread of continuity that might otherwise fray. Large public spectacles, parades and fireworks among them, forge a kind of collective memory too, something strangers can later claim to have experienced together. Economically, these occasions tend to give tourism and local business a welcome short-term lift, a practical bonus riding alongside the symbolic one.

Yes, I think so, generally. National holidays should give everyone the chance to take part in celebrations without worrying about losing money, and if workers aren't paid, it punishes them for something that isn't their fault. At my studio, holiday pay is normal, and I think most companies here do the same, partly because the law requires it and partly because it's just fair. Maybe for very short-term or informal jobs it's different. But for most normal jobs, I think paying workers on holidays is just basic respect.

Yes, I think so, generally. National holidays are meant to give everyone, regardless of income, the chance to take part in shared celebrations without worrying about lost wages, and unpaid closures would effectively punish workers for something outside their control. At our studio, holiday pay is standard, and most companies here follow that norm, partly because labour law requires it and partly because it's seen as fair. The exception might be short-term or informal work, where the norms are a bit murkier. But for most standard employment, paying workers through national holidays is a basic form of respect for their right to take part in cultural life like everyone else.

Yes, generally — national holidays exist to let everyone, regardless of income, take part in shared celebrations without fretting over lost wages, and an unpaid closure effectively penalises workers for something entirely outside their control. Holiday pay is simply standard at our studio, a norm most companies here seem to follow, partly because labour law demands it and partly because it's treated as basic fairness. Where the norms get murkier is short-term or informal work, arrangements that sit outside the usual rules. It could help a little, but I don't think one day alone would do much. It might raise awareness and make schools or workplaces do activities about other cultures, which is nice, but real understanding needs more than just one day a year. I think it works better as a small reminder for things that happen more often. At my studio, we sometimes have 'culture lunches' where someone shares food or a story from their background, and these small, regular moments probably help more than one big global day. So it's not useless, but it shouldn't be the only thing.

The 7.0 answer introduces the mild collocation 'symbolic anchor' and the reflective closer 'a shared symbolic day isn't nothing', showing more nuance than the flatter 'not useless, but shouldn't be the only thing' ending at band 6.5.7.0分的回答引入了温和的搭配'symbolic anchor',以及反思性的结尾语'a shared symbolic day isn't nothing',比6.5那个更平淡的'not useless, but shouldn't be the only thing'结尾展现出更多细腻感。

It could help a little, though I don't think a single day would achieve much on its own. Something like that might raise awareness and encourage schools or workplaces to run activities about other cultures for a day, which is a nice gesture, but genuine understanding usually needs sustained exposure, not an annual reminder. I think it works better as a symbolic anchor for things that happen more regularly — our studio has 'culture lunches' where someone shares food or a story from their background, and those small, repeated moments probably do more for real understanding than one big global date would. Still, a shared symbolic day isn't nothing; it shouldn't be treated as sufficient on its own.

    • LRsymbolic anchorA moderately precise collocation, more specific than the plain 'small reminder' phrasing at band 6.5, though not yet as distinctive as the more vivid vocabulary a 7.5 answer would select for the same idea.
    • GRAgenuine understanding usually needs sustained exposure, not an annual reminderA compact contrastive structure pairing a positive and negative noun phrase ('sustained exposure, not an annual reminder') in one clause, more economical than the separate 'but' sentence a band 6.5 answer used for the same contrast.
    • FCStill, a shared symbolic day isn't nothingA reflective, slightly understated closing remark that softens the earlier criticism, typical of band 7.0's mild qualifying tone. A band 6.5 answer would more likely state this flatly as 'it's not useless'.

Stays with short, coordinated clauses and plain vocabulary like 'we laughed a lot', delivering the opinion directly without much development.

I think people enjoy parties because they can relax and spend time with others. For example, last December my boss took our whole team to a rooftop barbecue by the Han River after we finished a big project. We ate together and watched the city lights come on, and it felt really nice after a busy week. I also played a game of charades with my friends Trang and Minh, and we laughed a lot. Some people might find parties tiring, but most of us enjoy them because they bring people closer.

    • FCI think people enjoy parties because they can relax and spend time with others.A direct, plain statement of opinion up front; it states the position but doesn't develop it much. At 7.0 the same idea gets a spoken hedge ('I'd say... felt genuinely refreshing'), and at 7.5 it's reframed as a discovery ('comes down to permission'), showing fuller engagement with the question. 在7.0,同样的想法用了一个口语化的缓冲语('I'd say... felt genuinely refreshing'),而在7.5,它被重新构建成了一种发现('comes down to permission'),展现出对题目更充分的投入。
    • LRwe laughed a lotSimple, common vocabulary that conveys the idea but stays generic. The 7.0 version upgrades this to 'had all of us in stitches', and 7.5 pushes further into idiomatic territory with 'fits of laughter neither of us saw coming', each level adding more precision and color. 7.0版本把它升级成了'had all of us in stitches',而7.5则进一步深入地道表达,用了'fits of laughter neither of us saw coming',每个分数档都增添了更多精准度和色彩。
    • GRASome people might find parties tiring, but most of us enjoy them because they bring people closer. Two short clauses joined by 'but', grammatically safe and correct. The 7.0 equivalent embeds a hedge ('To be fair') before a similar contrast, while 7.5 restructures the same idea into a sharper evaluative sentence, showing more flexible sentence control.

Honestly, I think people enjoy parties mainly because they offer a rare chance to unwind and connect with others outside the usual routine. Last December, for instance, after our studio finally wrapped up a big app project, my boss invited the whole team to a rooftop barbecue overlooking the Han River, which was such a welcome change from staring at screens all day. I'd say just sharing food and chatting as the city lights came on felt genuinely refreshing, and a quick game of charades with Trang and Minh had all of us in stitches. To be fair, some people find parties a bit much, but for most of us they're a great way to celebrate milestones.

    • FCI'd say just sharing food and chatting as the city lights came on felt genuinely refreshingThe hedge 'I'd say' plus reflective tone shows the speaker processing the idea in real time, a step up from the flat statement at 6.5. It's less compressed than the 7.5 opening though, which reframes the whole idea metaphorically instead of just softening a direct claim.
    • LRhad all of us in stitchesAn idiomatic phrase that lands naturally in speech, more colorful than 6.5's 'we laughed a lot' but not quite as crafted as 7.5's 'fits of laughter neither of us saw coming', which adds unexpectedness.一个在口语中显得自然的地道短语,比6.5的'we laughed a lot'更有色彩,但还不如7.5的'fits of laughter neither of us saw coming'那么精心雕琢,后者增添了一种出乎意料的感觉。
    • GRAwhich was such a welcome change from staring at screens all dayA non-defining relative clause tacked onto a longer sentence, showing some grammatical range beyond 6.5's short coordinated clauses. It's a single flourish though, whereas 7.5 sustains more complex subordination across the whole answer.

I think the appeal of parties comes down to permission - permission to switch off and actually be present with people, rather than just coexisting with them. Take last December: once our studio finally wrapped a gruelling app project, my boss whisked the whole team off to a rooftop barbecue overlooking the Han River, and there was something almost cathartic about trading our desks for skewers and city lights. What really stuck with me was a spontaneous round of charades with Trang and Minh that dissolved into fits of laughter neither of us saw coming. Sure, some people find the noise and forced mingling draining, but for most of us a good party does something a quiet dinner rarely can: it turns shared relief into a proper memory.

    • FCI think the appeal of parties comes down to permission - permission to switch off and actually be present with peopleThis opens with an abstract, almost analytical framing of the question rather than a plain answer, a genuine step beyond 7.0's softened but still direct claim and miles beyond 6.5's flat opening line.
    • LRthere was something almost cathartic about trading our desks for skewers and city lights'Cathartic' and the contrastive image of 'desks' versus 'skewers and city lights' show precise, slightly literary vocabulary choices well beyond 7.0's 'welcome change' and 6.5's plain 'felt really nice'.'Cathartic'以及"办公桌"和"烤串与城市灯光"之间的对比画面,展现出精准、略带文学色彩的词汇选择,远远超越了7.0的'welcome change'和6.5那个平淡的'felt really nice'。
    • GRASure, some people find the noise and forced mingling draining, but for most of us a good party does something a quiet dinner rarely can: it turns shared relief into a proper memory. This final sentence uses a colon to set up a payoff clause, a more compact and controlled structure than the simple 'but' contrast at 6.5 or the relative clause at 7.0, closing on an evaluative flourish rather than just restating the opinion.

I think there's a pretty clear generational tilt here: most people my age gravitate towards parties with friends, if only because friendship comes with fewer unspoken rules to observe. Last August, my colleagues and I marked the end of a punishing redesign project with drinks at a rooftop bar near the Han River, and what struck me was how much people loosened up simply because there was no parent or uncle in the room to perform politeness for. That's not to dismiss family gatherings entirely - I know plenty of people, especially those with relatives close in age, who find them just as freeing. But for me, at least, friends are where the guard genuinely comes down.

For example, when my cousin Hà finished university in Da Nang last June, her friends gave her a surprise rooftop party. There was bánh xèo, fairy lights, and everyone shared memories from school.

    • FCI think the most popular parties here are birthdays, housewarmings, and year-end parties.A simple, listed opening answer that directly names categories without further comment, less developed than the evaluative framing at 7.5 ('old reliables').

Answers with a plain list of occasions and a simple comparative sentence, staying close to common, safe vocabulary.

People here usually have parties for family milestones, holidays, or just for fun with friends. For example, after my younger sister passed her university entrance exam, my parents held a small gathering at our house in Hue. It was simple, just close relatives, some bánh bèo and chè, and a lot of laughter. Everyone shared funny stories about school, and my grandmother even sang an old song. I think these small parties feel more meaningful than big, formal ones, though events like Tet or weddings are also common.

Honestly, people here tend to hold parties for a mix of things - family milestones, national holidays, or sometimes just for fun with friends. For example, after my younger sister passed her university entrance exam, my parents put together a small gathering at our house in Hue, nothing fancy, just close relatives, some bánh bèo and chè, and plenty of laughter. I remember everyone taking turns telling funny stories about their own school days, and my grandmother even surprised us by singing an old folk song. I'd say these low-key, personal get-togethers actually feel more meaningful than the bigger, more formal parties, even though things like Tet or weddings obviously still matter.

People here mark all sorts of occasions with a party, but I'd split them roughly into two camps: the big calendar fixtures like Tet and weddings, and the small, personal wins that somehow feel more genuine. When my younger sister passed her university entrance exam, my parents didn't do anything elaborate - just a handful of relatives crammed into our house in Hue, some bánh bèo and chè, and my grandmother unexpectedly breaking into an old folk song halfway through dinner. What's stayed with me is how much warmth that modest evening had compared with some of the more choreographed events I've been to. So while the big festivals bring people together on schedule, it's often these small, spontaneous celebrations that end up mattering most.

    • FCI'd split them roughly into two camps: the big calendar fixtures like Tet and weddings, and the small, personal wins that somehow feel more genuineThis sets up an organising framework for the whole answer, a more architected response than the simple listing at 6.5 or the softened claim at 7.0.

For example, a few months ago my team celebrated a colleague's promotion at a rooftop bar by the Han River. It was fun, and nobody had to cook or tidy afterwards. It really comes down to the trade-off between convenience and intimacy, and in my circle, convenience usually wins. A few months back, my team marked a colleague's promotion at a rooftop bar overlooking the Han River, and what I appreciated most was how effortless it all was - no cooking, no cleaning, and people free to drift in or slip away whenever they liked. That kind of flexibility is hard to replicate at home. That said, I know families in particular who still swear by hosting at home, where nobody's watching the clock and the gathering feels genuinely theirs. So it's less a national preference than a question of what each group is actually optimising for.

Opens with an aphoristic 'ritual versus release' framing and closes on a balanced, almost poetic contrast sentence.

Family parties and friend parties operate on almost opposite logic, I've found - one runs on ritual, the other on release. My grandmother's birthday dinner in Hue this past March, held at my uncle's restaurant, was steeped in tradition: a long shared meal, old stories retold for the hundredth time, a few rounds of cards. Compare that to celebrating my friend Minh's promotion at a rooftop bar in Da Nang, where the volume, the dancing and the constant joking made it feel almost like the opposite event entirely. I'd say family gatherings quietly reinforce who you come from, while parties with friends are where you get to be whoever you feel like that night.

Answers with a direct 'yes' and a simple concession clause, describing the ceremony in plain, sequential terms.

Yes, I think traditional customs are still important, even though things are changing fast. For example, last December my friend Vy invited me to her family's year-end gathering in Da Nang. They had a big meal with bánh tét and boiled chicken, and her grandmother led a short ceremony where everyone lit incense and wished for good luck. Even though Vy's family uses modern things like Facebook, the old traditions, like offering food to ancestors, were still the main part of the evening. I think these customs make celebrations feel more meaningful.

    • FCYes, I think traditional customs are still important, even though things are changing fast.A direct yes/because answer with a simple concession clause, less developed than 7.5's paradoxical framing that customs 'matter more precisely because everything else is modernising'.一个直接的yes/because式回答,带一个简单的让步分句,不如7.5那个矛盾式的构建方式那么充分展开,后者认为传统习俗'matter more precisely because everything else is modernising'。

Yes, I definitely think traditional customs still matter a lot, even with everything modernising so quickly. Last December, for instance, my friend Vy invited me to her family's year-end gathering in Da Nang, where they served bánh tét and boiled chicken, and her grandmother led a short ceremony in which everyone lit incense and wished for good luck for the year ahead. What struck me was that even though Vy's family is pretty tech-savvy - her uncle spent half the evening taking photos for Facebook - the older customs, like offering food to ancestors, were still clearly the heart of it. Honestly, I'd say it's the customs, not the decorations, that make a celebration feel meaningful.

Yes, and if anything I think customs matter more precisely because everything else is modernising so fast around them. Last December, my friend Vy invited me to her family's year-end gathering in Da Nang, where the meal - bánh tét, boiled chicken, the works - was really just the backdrop to her grandmother's short ceremony: incense lit, wishes made for the coming year, ancestors quietly honoured. What I found telling was the contrast in the room itself, her uncle cheerfully filming the whole thing for Facebook while his mother performed a ritual that's probably older than the restaurant they were sitting in. Rather than being pushed aside by modern life, the old customs seemed to be what gave the evening its actual weight.

Gives a direct yes/no opinion and describes clothing plainly, using simple contrast with 'but'.

Yes, I think people usually dress differently depending on the type of party. There's a big difference between a casual housewarming and a formal company party. For example, last spring I went to a farewell dinner for my colleague Nam at a restaurant near the Dragon Bridge, and most of us dressed a bit more nicely - the men wore button-down shirts and the women wore dresses. It felt right because we wanted to show respect. But when friends meet at someone's apartment for a birthday, people usually just wear jeans and a t-shirt.

Honestly, I do think people usually dress differently depending on the type of party - there's a clear gap between something casual like a housewarming and something formal like a company year-end event. Last spring, for example, I went to a farewell dinner for my colleague Nam at a riverside restaurant near the Dragon Bridge, and most of us made a bit more effort, the guys in button-down shirts, the women in dresses, mainly because we wanted the evening to feel respectful for Nam. By contrast, at a friend's birthday in someone's apartment, people usually just show up in jeans and a t-shirt. So I'd say it's partly about mood, partly about comfort.

Frames clothing as a 'signal' from the start and closes with a 'less a rule than an instinct' construction and the idiom 'misread the room'.从一开始就把服装构建成了一种'signal',并以一个'less a rule than an instinct'的结构,以及习语'misread the room'收尾。

Clothing at a party is basically a signal of how much the occasion is meant to matter, so yes, people dress accordingly, often without even thinking about it. Last spring, at a farewell dinner for my colleague Nam near the Dragon Bridge, the whole team quietly upgraded their outfits - button-down shirts, the odd dress - not because anyone demanded it, but because we wanted the evening to feel like it mattered to him. Compare that to a friend's birthday in someone's cramped apartment, where jeans and a t-shirt are practically the uniform and dressing up would almost seem like you'd misread the room. So I'd say it's less a rule than an instinct: we dress to match the emotional weight we want the occasion to carry.
