The answer explains the lesson's impact in short, plain sentences ('He said I had designed for myself, not for them'; 'it made me a much better designer'), which are clear and correct but linguistically simple, typical of Band 6.5.这段回答用简短朴素的句子来解释这堂课的影响('他说我是在为自己设计,而不是为他们设计';'这让我成为了一个好得多的设计师'),清晰准确但语言表现简单,是Band 6.5的典型特征。

The lesson I remember well happened during my first month working at my studio, about five years ago, here in Da Nang.

My manager, a man called Khanh, gave me my first real project, a small app for a local coffee shop. I designed the screens exactly the way I thought looked best, without asking the client much about what they actually wanted. I was quite proud of it.

During the meeting, the client didn't like it at all. Afterwards, Khanh sat with me and explained, quite calmly, that good design is not about what looks nice to me, but about solving the client's problem. He said I had designed for myself, not for them. At first I felt embarrassed and a bit upset, because I had worked hard on it.

I remember this lesson so well because it changed how I work completely. Now, before I design anything, I always ask a lot of questions first and try to understand what the client really needs. Every project I do now, I think about Khanh's words. It was an uncomfortable lesson, but honestly, it made me a much better designer, and I'm grateful he told me directly instead of just fixing it himself.

  • FCHe said I had designed for myself, not for them. The sentence reports the manager's verdict in one plain clause, using the past perfect ('had designed') correctly to mark it as prior to the meeting, but without any further unpacking of what 'designing for myself' actually meant in practice. A 7.0 answer at the same point would likely add a short example or consequence attached to the statement; here it stands alone as a flat report of what was said, leaving the reflective weight to the next paragraph rather than building it into this sentence, consistent with the 6.5 target of stating one clear point directly.这句话用一个简单的分句转述了经理的评判,准确地使用过去完成时('had designed')标示出这发生在会议之前,但没有进一步展开'为自己而设计'在实际中究竟意味着什么。Band 7.0在同样的位置很可能会添加一个简短的例子或与陈述相连的结果;而这里它孤立地作为一句平淡的转述陈述,把反思的分量留给了下一段,而不是在这个句子里就建构起来,这符合Band 6.5的目标——直接了当地陈述一个清晰的观点。
  • LRit made me a much better designerEvery word in the phrase is common and unremarkable — 'made', 'much better', 'designer' — with the comparative 'much better' doing the only evaluative work, rather than reaching for a more specific description of what actually improved (asking more questions, understanding client needs). This keeps the outcome statement clear but generic, which fits the 6.5 lexical descriptor's ceiling; a 7.0 answer would likely replace this with something more specific and self-aware, naming the actual skill that changed rather than just its overall effect.这个短语中的每一个词都很常见、毫不出彩——'made'、'much better'、'designer'——比较级'much better'(好得多)承担了全部的评价工作,而不是去具体描述实际上改进了什么(问更多问题、更理解客户需求)。这使得关于结果的陈述清晰却笼统,符合Band 6.5词汇描述符的上限;Band 7.0的答案很可能会用更具体、更具自我察觉意味的内容取代这一点,点明真正发生变化的具体技能,而不只是它的整体影响。
  • GRAI remember this lesson so well because it changed how I work completely. The single 'because' clause links the memory directly to its stated cause with no further subordination, and the intensifier 'completely' does the emphatic work a more complex structure would otherwise carry at a higher band. It's accurate and clearly reasoned, satisfying the 6.5 target of 'a few basic complex ones' built on familiar connectors, but it doesn't attempt the kind of layered complexity — specifying exactly how the work habit changed within the same sentence — that a 7.0 answer would typically build around this same claim.这个单一的'because'从句直接把记忆与其陈述的原因连接起来,没有其他从属结构,而强调副词'completely'(彻底地)承担了在更高分段本会由更复杂结构承担的那种强调作用。这准确且推理清晰,满足了Band 6.5'基于熟悉连接词的少量基础复合句'这一目标,但它没有尝试Band 7.0通常会围绕同一主张构建的那种层层叠加的复杂度——在同一个句子里具体说明工作习惯究竟是如何改变的。

The answer develops the discomfort of the moment with a specific concrete detail (standing 'with nothing useful to say in front of my classmates') and closes with a clear practical consequence for how the speaker works now, showing the reason-plus-example development Band 7.0 targets.这段回答用一个具体细节('站在那里,在同学们面前却说不出任何有用的话')来展开当时那种难堪的感觉,并以一个清晰的、对说话者现在工作方式产生的实际影响收尾,体现出Band 7.0所要求的'理由加举例'式展开。

The lesson I remember most clearly was a portfolio review during my final year at university in Hanoi, in front of the whole class.

It happened in a small critique room with about fifteen of us sitting around a table, and each student had to present a project to a visiting design professor none of us had met before. I'd prepared what I thought was a strong presentation, mostly describing my work using words like 'clean', 'modern' and 'user-friendly', without really explaining why I'd made any of the specific decisions I had.

About two minutes in, the professor stopped me and asked a single question: why that particular shade of blue, and not any other. I didn't have a real answer, just something vague about it 'feeling right', and I remember the silence in the room while I tried to think of something better and failed completely. She didn't let it go either - she asked the same kind of question about three more choices, and each time my explanation got weaker.

Afterwards, rather than moving straight to the next student, she said something I've never forgotten: that describing your work with adjectives is what you do when you don't actually know why you made a decision, and that every choice on the page should have a reason behind it that you could explain to a five-year-old.

I remember this lesson so well because it was genuinely uncomfortable at the time, standing there with nothing useful to say in front of my classmates. But it completely changed how I prepare for meetings now. Before every client presentation, I make myself write down a real reason for each major decision beforehand, precisely so I never end up standing in a silent room again with only the word 'clean' to offer.

  • FCI remember this lesson so well because it was genuinely uncomfortable at the time, standing there with nothing useful to say in front of my classmates. The reason clause is immediately grounded by a participial phrase — 'standing there with nothing useful to say' — that recreates the specific sensory memory of the moment rather than just labelling the emotion 'uncomfortable', which is the concrete-example habit Band 7.0 fluency rewards over a bare abstract claim. A 6.5 answer would likely stop at 'it was embarrassing' without this added image; the intensifier 'genuinely' also marks the claim as felt rather than performed. It doesn't yet reach the further reflective turn that would push the answer toward 7.5's more explicitly evaluative development.
  • LRShe didn't let it go either'Didn't let it go' is an idiom for persistent pressure, chosen here instead of a flatter paraphrase like 'she continued asking', and the tag 'either' links it back to the professor's earlier single tough question, showing the idiom is doing connective work across sentences, not just decorating one. This is a comfortable, natural collocation rather than a stretch for something more literary, which matches the 7.0 target of 'a few flexible... ones' plus 'one natural collocation' rather than the denser idiomatic range expected at 7.5.'Didn't let it go'是一个表示持续施压的习语,这里选用它而不是"she continued asking"这样更平淡的转述,句尾的"either"把它与前面教授先前提出的那个刁钻问题联系了起来,说明这个习语在句子之间起到了连接作用,而不只是装饰某一句话。这是一个自如、自然的搭配,而不是刻意去够更文学化的表达,符合 Band 7.0 目标中"几个灵活……的词"加上"一个自然搭配"的要求,而不是 Band 7.5 所期望的那种更密集的惯用语范围。
  • GRABefore every client presentation, I make myself write down a real reason for each major decision beforehand, precisely so I never end up standing in a silent room again with only the word 'clean' to offer. The purpose clause 'precisely so I never end up...' is layered onto an already-fronted adverbial ('Before every client presentation') and a reflexive construction ('make myself write down'), stacking three grammatical devices into one sentence while staying accurate throughout. That's more ambitious than the single 'because' or 'so' clauses a 6.5 answer typically manages, though the structures themselves are common enough that this reads as comfortable rather than the more marked constructions that would flag 7.5. The callback to 'clean' from earlier in the story also closes the anecdote's argument, not just its grammar.目的从句"precisely so I never end up..."叠加在一个已经前置的状语("Before every client presentation")和一个反身结构("make myself write down")之上,在一句话里堆叠了三种语法手段,同时全程保持准确。这比 Band 6.5 答案通常能驾驭的单一"because"或"so"从句更有野心,不过这些结构本身足够常见,读起来显得自如,而不是会标志 Band 7.5 的那种更醒目的结构。回扣到故事前面出现过的"clean"一词,也收束了这段轶事的论点,而不只是它的语法。

The lecturer's quoted remark - 'You will never again make that gap on a screen, because you now know what it costs' - and the compact final line about the pain being the lesson show the vivid, quotable phrasing and reflective depth characteristic of Band 7.5.那位讲师被引述的原话——'你以后再也不会在屏幕上留下那种空隙了,因为你现在知道它的代价是什么'——加上结尾那句关于'痛感本身就是这堂课'的凝练收尾,都展现出Band 7.5那种生动、值得引用的措辞和反思深度。

The lesson I remember best was a typography class in my second year at university in Hanoi, and I remember it mostly because it went so badly.

Our lecturer, a quiet man in his sixties who'd trained as a printer before computers, walked in one morning and announced that we wouldn't be touching a screen for the whole day. Instead he'd borrowed cases of old lead type from a print shop, and each of us had to set a four-line poem by hand — letter by letter, backwards, with tweezers — lock it into a frame, and print it on an ancient proof press in the corner of the studio.

It took me four hours. I dropped an entire line on the floor twice, set a 'b' as a 'd' without noticing, and my first print came out with the second line upside down. Everyone's did. By the afternoon the whole class was silent, hunched over these tiny grey letters, and the room smelled of ink and frustration.

The reason I remember it so well is what he said at the end, when we finally had twenty smudged, slightly crooked poems pinned to the wall. He pointed at the spacing between two letters on my print and said, 'You will never again make that gap on a screen, because you now know what it costs.' And he was right. Every time I nudge letter-spacing in a design tool, I can feel the weight of those lead letters. It's the only lesson I've had where the pain was the lesson, and a decade later it still shows up in my work every day.

  • FCIt's the only lesson I've had where the pain was the lessonThis closing line is a compact generalisation built on wordplay ("the pain was the lesson") that reframes the whole four-hour anecdote as a single insight, rather than simply summarising what happened -- precisely the reflective, evaluative closing move the 7.5 descriptor names as a defining feature. A Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would be more likely to end with a plain statement like "I learned a lot from that class." Because it directly echoes the lecturer's own words earlier ("you now know what it costs"), it also shows the speaker synthesising someone else's insight into their own, rather than just reporting it.这句收尾是一句建立在文字游戏("the pain was the lesson")之上的凝练概括,把整整四个小时的轶事重新定位为一条单一的领悟,而不只是单纯总结发生了什么——这正是7.5分描述语点名的、作为其标志性特征的反思性、评价性收尾手法。6.5或7.0分的答案更可能以一句平淡的陈述收尾,比如"I learned a lot from that class."因为它直接呼应了前文讲师自己说过的话("you now know what it costs"),这也说明说话者把别人的见解融会贯通成了自己的领悟,而不只是转述而已。
  • LRthe room smelled of ink and frustrationPairing a literal, sensory noun (ink) with an abstract, emotional one (frustration) inside the same collocation is a genuinely idiomatic move -- it lets one verb ("smelled of") carry both the physical scene and the classroom's mood at once, rather than describing them as two separate sentences the way a Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would. The abstract noun also avoids the more obvious, expected word choice (e.g. "the room smelled bad"), showing lexical flexibility rather than a memorised phrase. It captures the exact atmosphere the story has been building toward -- silent students hunched over tiny lead letters.
  • GRA'You will never again make that gap on a screen, because you now know what it costs.'Embedding a full, punctuated direct quotation as the climax of the narrative -- rather than paraphrasing it into reported speech -- takes sophisticated control of quotation mechanics in spoken delivery, and the quoted sentence itself contains its own subordinate because-clause, adding a further layer of complexity inside the quotation. A Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would more likely report the gist ("he told us we'd remember this") rather than reproduce the exact words. Using the teacher's real sentence as the answer's turning point also strengthens coherence, since the final paragraph is built around unpacking what that one line meant.把一句完整、带有标点的直接引语嵌入叙述的高潮部分——而不是把它转述成间接引语——需要对口语表达中的引用机制有精细的掌控能力,而且这句被引用的话本身还包含一个从属的because从句,在引语内部又增添了一层复杂度。6.5或7.0分的答案更可能只转述大意("he told us we'd remember this"),而不是原样重现原话。把老师这句真实的话用作回答的转折点,也增强了连贯性,因为最后一段正是围绕解读这句话的含义而展开的。

The closing claim is stated as a plain repeated structure ('cannot be replaced... cannot be replaced either') rather than the tighter, non-repetitive phrasing the higher bands use.结尾的论断用了一种平实、重复的结构('cannot be replaced... cannot be replaced either'),而不是高分段所用的那种更紧凑、不重复的措辞。

Mostly physical things that were present at the moment. My mother has a biscuit tin with our hospital bracelets from when we were born, her wedding invitation, and a drawing I made at four, and none of it has real value except that it was there. Photos are the obvious choice now, though people keep so many that none of them mean much. People also keep tickets, letters, or a gift from someone who has passed away. What seems to matter is that the object cannot be replaced, because the event cannot be replaced either.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCnone of it has real value except that it was thereA plain statement of the paradox. 7.0 and 7.5 both extend this slightly with 'that it was there when it mattered', adding a small but real precision this flatter version lacks.一个平实的悖论陈述。7.0分和7.5分都稍微延伸了这一点,加上'that it was there when it mattered',增添了这个更平淡的版本所缺乏的一点微小但真实的精确度。
    • LRa gift from someone who has passed awayA plain, literal phrase. 7.0 and 7.5 both replace this with the more compact 'a gift from someone who's gone/since passed', a shorter, more idiomatic way of saying the same thing.一个平实、字面化的短语。7.0分和7.5分都把它替换成更紧凑的'a gift from someone who's gone/since passed',这是一种更短、更地道的表达同一意思的方式。
    • GRAWhat seems to matter is that the object cannot be replaced, because the event cannot be replaced either.Repeats 'replaced' within the same sentence. 7.0 and 7.5 both avoid this repetition with 'can't be replaced, because the event can't be either', a tighter, less repetitive construction.在同一个句子里重复了'replaced'。7.0分和7.5分都用'can't be replaced, because the event can't be either'来避免这种重复,这是一种更紧凑、重复更少的结构。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCthese are objects that hold a specific dayA precise summarising clause after the list, absent from 6.5's version which just lists items without this closing generalisation. 7.5 extends the verb further to 'anchor a single specific day', a stronger metaphor.列表后面跟着一个精确的总结性从句,而6.5分版本只是列举了条目,没有这个结尾的概括。7.5分把动词进一步延伸为'anchor a single specific day',这是一个更有力的隐喻。
    • LRa gift from someone who's goneA more compact, idiomatic phrase than 6.5's literal 'a gift from someone who has passed away'. 7.5 varies this again to 'someone who's since passed', a slightly different but equally natural idiom.比6.5分字面化的'a gift from someone who has passed away'更紧凑、更地道的短语。7.5分又变化为'someone who's since passed',这是一个略有不同、但同样自然的地道表达。
    • GRAWhat seems to matter, I think, is that the object can't be replaced, because the event can't be either.Avoids repeating 'replaced' by using 'either' at the end, more elegant than 6.5's repetitive version. 7.5 keeps this same structure with 'ultimately' and 'precisely' added for extra precision.用结尾的'either'来避免重复'replaced',比6.5分重复的版本更优雅。7.5分保留了同样的结构,加上'ultimately'和'precisely'以获得更高的精确度。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCthese are objects that anchor a single specific dayThe verb 'anchor' is more vivid and precise than 7.0's 'hold', suggesting the object keeps the memory fixed in place rather than simply containing it.动词'anchor'比7.0分的'hold'更生动、更精确,暗示这个物品把记忆固定在原地,而不仅仅是承载它。

A surprising number of small, boring things. My mornings depend on remembering where I left my motorbike key, my building pass, and, before any call, the client's name — I once opened a meeting by greeting someone as his colleague. There are also passwords, appointments, what's in the fridge, and whose birthday is this week. Most of it is really social memory, like who said what or what you owe someone. We now use phones for dates and passwords, but the human parts, like promises and names, still have to live in your head.

    • GRAWe now use phones for dates and passwords, but the human parts, like promises and names, still have to live in your head.A plain 'but' sentence with a simple 'like' list. 7.0 and 7.5 both use dashes to set off the same list as a parenthetical aside ('the human parts — the promises, the names —'), a more flexible structure than this comma-based version.一个用平实的'but'连接、带一个简单'like'列表的句子。7.0分和7.5分都用破折号把同样的列表划出来,作为一个插入式的旁白('the human parts — the promises, the names —'),这比这个基于逗号的版本更灵活。

The closing clause 'those are the ones that hurt when they slip' adds an evaluative reflection that 6.5's more descriptive ending doesn't reach for.结尾从句'those are the ones that hurt when they slip'加入了一种评价性的反思,而6.5分更具描述性的结尾没有达到这一点。

A surprising amount of small, unglamorous information, honestly. My mornings depend on remembering where I left the motorbike key, my building pass, and, before any call, the client's name — I once opened a meeting by greeting someone as his own colleague. Then there are passwords, appointments, what's in the fridge, and whose birthday falls this week. Most of it is really social memory, I'd say: who said what, what you owe, what someone is sensitive about. We've outsourced the dates and passwords to phones, but the human parts — the promises, the names — still have to live in your head, and those are the ones that hurt when they slip.

    • FCsmall, unglamorous informationA more precise, slightly wry adjective than 6.5's plain 'boring'. 7.5 keeps this exact word, showing it was already a strong choice at 7.0.一个比6.5分平实的'boring'更精确、略带调侃意味的形容词。7.5分保留了完全相同的词,说明它在7.0分时就已经是一个很出色的选择。
    • LRwho said what, what you owe, what someone is sensitive aboutA fuller three-item parallel list than 6.5's shorter two-item version. 7.5 extends this slightly further with 'quietly sensitive about', adding one more layer of nuance.一个比6.5分更短的两项版本更完整的三项平行列表。7.5分把它再进一步延伸为'quietly sensitive about',增添了一层细腻感。
    • GRAthe human parts — the promises, the names — still have to live in your head, and those are the ones that hurt when they slipUses dashes to insert the list as an aside within the main clause, and adds a further result clause about the consequence of forgetting, more layered than 6.5's simpler comma-based sentence stopping at 'live in your head'.用破折号把列表作为插入语插进主句中,并加上一个关于'遗忘的后果'的进一步结果从句,比6.5分更简单、以逗号为主、止步于'live in your head'的句子更有层次。

A surprising amount of small, unglamorous information, if I'm honest. My mornings depend on remembering where I left the motorbike key, my building pass, and, crucially, the client's name before any call — I once opened a meeting by greeting someone as his own colleague. Then there's the running list: passwords, appointments, what's actually in the fridge, whose birthday falls this week. Most of it is really social memory, I'd argue — who said what, what you owe, what someone is quietly sensitive about. We've outsourced the dates and passwords to our phones, but the human parts — the promises, the names — still have to live in your head, and those are precisely the ones that sting when they slip.

    • LRthose are precisely the ones that sting when they slipThe verb 'sting' is more vivid and specific than 7.0's 'hurt', and 'precisely' sharpens the claim further than the plainer 6.5 and 7.0 endings.动词'sting'比7.0分的'hurt'更生动、更具体,'precisely'进一步锐化了这个论断,超过了6.5分和7.0分更平实的结尾。
    • GRAand, crucially, the client's name before any callThe adverb 'crucially' is inserted mid-clause between commas, a more flexible placement than 7.0's straighter version without this inserted emphasis, showing finer sentence control.副词'crucially'被插入到从句中间、用逗号隔开,这比7.0分那种没有这种插入式强调的更直白的版本,展现出更精细的句子驾驭能力。

The comparison 'as little as we do now' is a plain, direct closing claim, less pointed than the higher bands' 'drifted toward' phrasing.比较句'as little as we do now'是一个平实、直接的结尾论断,不如高分段'drifted toward'这种措辞那样犀利。

I disagree, though I understand why people think this. I once arrived at a client's building with a dead phone and realised I didn't know the floor, the room, or even the name of the person I was meeting, because all of it was saved in my phone. Technology stores information, but it doesn't understand it, so you can't really think with facts you don't hold in your head. There's also a smaller cost: remembering is part of caring. • FCall of it was in the phone, none of it in meA balanced, parallel contrast absent from 6.5's flatter version, which just states the facts without this rhetorical symmetry. 7.5 keeps this exact phrase, showing it was already well-formed at 7.0.一个均衡、平行的对比,而6.5分更平淡的版本没有这一点,只是陈述了事实,没有这种修辞上的对称性。7.5分保留了完全相同的短语,说明它在7.0分时就已经构建得很出色了。

Because memory isn't really a recording, it's more like a story each person rebuilds every time they tell it. My sister and I have argued for years about who let go of a kite string on the Perfume River, and we both remember it completely differently, with each of us being the innocent one. People remember what mattered to them, not exactly what happened, and they fill in gaps with whatever makes sense to them. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCSo two honest people can genuinely believe two different versions of the same event.A plain closing statement. 7.0 and 7.5 both sharpen this to 'two entirely honest people can genuinely hold two truths/contradictory truths', a more pointed and slightly paradoxical way of making the same point.一个平实的结尾陈述。7.0分和7.5分都把它锐化为'two entirely honest people can genuinely hold two truths/contradictory truths',这是一种更犀利、略带悖论意味的表达同一观点的方式。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCtwo entirely honest people can genuinely hold two different truthsSharper and more paradoxical than 6.5's plainer 'two honest people can genuinely believe two different versions of the same event'. 7.5 keeps this phrase almost unchanged, swapping only 'different' for 'contradictory'.比6.5分更平实的'two honest people can genuinely believe two different versions of the same event'更犀利、更具悖论意味。7.5分几乎原样保留了这个短语,只是把'different'换成了'contradictory'。

The verb 'sands the story a little smoother' is a vivid, unusual metaphor for gradual distortion that neither lower band attempts.动词短语'sands the story a little smoother'是一个生动、不寻常的隐喻,用来描述渐进式的扭曲,两个较低分段都没有尝试过这种手法。

Because memory isn't a recording at all, it's a story each person quietly rebuilds every time they retell it. My sister and I have argued for twenty years over who let go of a kite string on the Perfume River, and we both remember it vividly and completely differently — each of us is somehow, conveniently, the innocent one. People remember what mattered to them rather than what actually happened; they fill the gaps with whatever makes emotional sense, and every retelling sands the story a little smoother. Emotion distorts it further: a frightening moment feels longer and sharper than it ever was. So two entirely honest people can genuinely hold two contradictory truths, which is largely why witness evidence carries so much less weight than we'd like to believe.

Recent history, if I had to choose, because it explains the people around you. I never understood why my grandmother keeps three sacks of rice in the house until I learned about the shortages of the 1980s, and suddenly a lot of her habits made sense. Recent history tells you why your country's roads, laws, and fears look the way they do now. Ideally you would study both, but I would keep the recent one if forced to choose.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCbut I would keep the recent one if forced to chooseRepeats the opening phrase 'if I had to choose' almost verbatim as 'if forced to choose'. 7.0 and 7.5 both avoid this repetition, closing instead with 'the century that made/actually made the present', a fresher, more specific final image.几乎逐字重复了开头短语'if I had to choose',变成'if forced to choose'。7.0分和7.5分都避免了这种重复,转而以'the century that made/actually made the present'收尾,这是一个更新颖、更具体的结尾意象。

    • GRAI'd keep the century that made the presentA fresh, specific closing image, avoiding 6.5's repetition of 'if forced to choose' from the opening sentence. 7.5 intensifies this with 'actually made the present', adding emphasis.一个新颖、具体的结尾意象,避免了6.5分重复开头句'if forced to choose'的问题。7.5分用'actually made the present'进一步强化了这一点,增添了强调力度。

The verb 'implicated' in place of 'involved' is a more precise, slightly legal-sounding word choice that neither lower band reaches for.用'implicated'代替'involved',是一个更精确、略带法律色彩的用词选择,两个较低分段都没有达到这一点。

Recent history, if forced to choose, simply because it explains the people standing right around you. I never understood why my grandmother keeps three sacks of rice in the house until I learnt about the shortages of the 1980s, and suddenly a dozen of her habits clicked into place at once. Recent history tells you why your country's roads, laws and fears look precisely the way they do. Ancient history offers a different value, though: distance. It's far easier to think clearly about power or empire once the empire is two thousand years gone and nobody's grandfather is implicated. Ideally you'd study both, but if a school had to sacrifice one, I'd keep the century that actually made the present.

    • FCthe people standing right around youA more vivid, physical image than 7.0 and 6.5's plainer 'the people around you', with 'standing right' adding immediacy to the abstract claim.一个比7.0分和6.5分更平实的'the people around you'更生动、更具身体感的意象,'standing right'给这个抽象的论断增添了一种即时感。
    • LRnobody's grandfather is implicatedA more precise, almost legal verb than 7.0's plainer 'involved', suggesting a specific kind of moral entanglement rather than just general connection.一个比7.0分更平实的'involved'更精确、近乎法律用语的动词,暗示的是一种特定的道德牵连,而不仅仅是一般性的联系。
    • GRAI'd keep the century that actually made the presentAdds the intensifying adverb 'actually' to 7.0's already strong closing phrase 'the century that made the present', a small but deliberate final emphasis.在7.0分已经很有力的结尾短语'the century that made the present'上,加上了强调性副词'actually',这是一个小但刻意的最终强调。

The closing sentence lists only two factors ('politics and money'), a simpler list than the higher bands' three-part version.结尾句只列出了两个因素('politics and money'),这比高分段的三部分版本更简单。

Less than we would hope, honestly. Everyone in Da Nang remembers the big floods, and the city is still building on the floodplains, because remembering a mistake and having a reason to avoid repeating it are two different things. History helps most when it feels specific and recent enough to seem real, so countries that lived through hyperinflation tend to fear it for generations. It helps least when people decide their own situation is different this time, which almost everyone does. So understanding history gives you a warning, but whether people act on it depends on politics and money.

    • FCSo understanding history gives you a warning, but whether people act on it depends on politics and money.A two-item closing list. 7.0 and 7.5 both extend this to three items — 'politics, money, and how loud the warning happens to be' — a fuller, more developed final sentence.一个两项的结尾列表。7.0分和7.5分都把它延伸为三项——'politics, money, and how loud the warning happens to be'——一个更完整、更充分展开的结尾句。
    • LRwhich almost everyone doesA plain closing tag. 7.0 and 7.5 both upgrade this to 'which they almost always do' or 'which is almost always exactly what happens', a more emphatic and specific way of making the same point.一个平实的结尾标签。7.0分和7.5分都把它升级为'which they almost always do'或'which is almost always exactly what happens',这是一种更强调、更具体的表达同一观点的方式。
    • GRAbecause remembering a mistake and having a reason to avoid repeating it are two different thingsA straightforward 'X and Y are two different things' sentence. 7.5 restructures a similar idea with 'turn out to be two entirely different things', adding the verb 'turn out' for a more considered, discovered-in-hindsight tone.一个直白的'X and Y are two different things'句子。7.5分用'turn out to be two entirely different things'重新组织了类似的想法,加上了动词'turn out',带有一种更深思熟虑的、事后发现的语气。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCwhich is probably why the family storyteller always seems to remember bestA plain superlative ending. 7.0 and 7.5 both replace 'remember best' with 'have/possess the sharpest memory', a more precise and idiomatic noun phrase than this simple verb-based version.一个平实的最高级结尾。7.0分和7.5分都把'remember best'替换成'have/possess the sharpest memory',这是一个比这种简单的动词版本更精确、更地道的名词短语。

    6.5 分

The final sentence stops after 'won't be the famous ones', without the higher bands' added explanation of who will be studied instead.结尾句在'won't be the famous ones'后就戛然而止,没有像高分段那样加上关于'那到底会是谁'的解释。

I think the arrival of AI in ordinary work will be studied the way we now study the arrival of electricity. In my own studio, the year these tools appeared changed what a junior designer's job actually was almost overnight, and future historians will want to know how people adapted or lost out. The climate response, or lack of it, will obviously be studied too, probably with some anger. Closer to home, I suspect how Vietnam went from one of the poorest countries to a middle-income one within my parents' lifetime will be studied by other nations. The people worth studying probably won't be the famous ones.

    • FCThe people worth studying probably won't be the famous ones.A short, unfinished-feeling closing claim. 7.0 and 7.5 both extend this with a dash and an explanation — 'they'll be whoever the records happen to preserve' — completing the thought this version leaves open.一个简短、给人未完成之感的结尾论断。7.0分和7.5分都用一个破折号加解释来延伸它——'they'll be whoever the records happen to preserve'——完成了这个版本留下的开放性想法。
    • LRhow people adapted or lost outA simple two-item pair. 7.0 and 7.5 both extend this to three verbs — 'adapted, resisted or simply lost out / got left behind' — a fuller list than this shorter version.一对简单的两项组合。7.0分和7.5分都把它延伸为三个动词——'adapted, resisted or simply lost out / got left behind'——比这个更短的版本更完整的列表。
    • GRAIn my own studio, the year these tools appeared changed what a junior designer's job actually was almost overnight, and future historians will want to know how people adapted or lost out.A single long sentence with two coordinated clauses joined by 'and'. 7.0 and 7.5 both split a similar idea across two independent clauses with 'and historians will presumably want to know', a slightly more measured pacing than this one continuous sentence.一个用'and'连接两个并列从句的长句。7.0分和7.5分都用'and historians will presumably want to know',把类似的想法拆分到两个独立从句中,这比这一整个连续的句子节奏更为从容。
    7.0 分

The closing dash completes the earlier claim about the people worth studying, giving the answer a full circle that 6.5's more open-ended ending doesn't achieve.结尾的破折号完成了前面关于'值得研究的人'的论断,让整个回答有了一种6.5分更开放式的结尾没能达到的完整闭环感。

I think the arrival of AI in ordinary work will be studied the way we now study the arrival of electricity. In my own studio, the year these tools appeared changed what a junior designer's job even was, almost overnight, and historians will presumably want to know how people adapted, resisted or simply lost out. The climate response, or the lack of one, will obviously be studied as well, probably with a fair amount of anger. Closer to home, I suspect the way Vietnam went from one of the poorest countries to a middle-income one within my parents' lifetime will become a case study for other nations. The people worth studying probably aren't the famous ones — they'll be whoever the records happen to preserve.

    • FCthey'll be whoever the records happen to preserveCompletes the claim left open at 6.5's ending, explaining exactly who will be studied instead of the famous. 7.5 keeps this phrase almost unchanged, adding only 'have preserved' for a slightly different tense.完成了在6.5分结尾处留下的开放性论断,准确解释了取代'名人'、会被研究的到底是谁。7.5分几乎原样保留了这个短语,只加上了'have preserved'以略微改变时态。
    • LRhow people adapted, resisted or simply lost outA fuller three-verb list than 6.5's two-item 'adapted or lost out'. 7.5 extends this once more to 'adapted, resisted, or simply got left behind', varying the final verb for extra vividness.一个比6.5分两项的'adapted or lost out'更完整的三动词列表。7.5分再次把它延伸为'adapted, resisted, or simply got left behind',变化了最后一个动词,增添了更多生动感。
    • GRAthe year these tools appeared changed what a junior designer's job even was, almost overnight, and historians will presumably want to know how people adapted, resisted or simply lost outInserts 'almost overnight' as a mid-sentence aside between commas, a more flexible placement than 6.5's version, which tacks the same phrase onto the end of the clause instead.把'almost overnight'作为句中插入语、用逗号隔开插入进去,这比6.5分版本更灵活,后者是把同样的短语附加在从句末尾。
    7.5 分

The verb 'pore over' in 'a case study other nations pore over' is a more vivid, idiomatic choice than the plainer 'a case study for other nations' the lower bands use.'a case study other nations pore over'中的动词短语'pore over',是一个比低分段所用的更平实的'a case study for other nations'更生动、更地道的选择。

I suspect the arrival of AI in ordinary work will end up studied the way we now study the arrival of electricity. In my own studio, the single year these tools appeared changed what a junior designer's job even meant, almost overnight, and historians will presumably want to know exactly how people adapted, resisted, or simply got left behind. The climate response, or the conspicuous lack of one, will obviously be studied too, probably with a good deal of retrospective anger. Closer to home, I suspect the way Vietnam climbed from one of the poorest countries to a middle-income one within my parents' single lifetime will become a case study other nations pore over. The people worth studying probably won't be the famous ones at all — they'll be whoever the records happen to have preserved.

    • FCa case study other nations pore overA relative clause with the idiom 'pore over' replaces 7.0's simpler prepositional phrase 'a case study for other nations', giving the sentence more active, vivid imagery of nations studying closely.一个带有地道短语'pore over'的定语从句,取代了7.0分更简单的介词短语'a case study for other nations',给句子增添了更主动、更生动的'各国仔细研究'的画面感。
    • LRthe conspicuous lack of oneThe adjective 'conspicuous' is more precise and evaluative than 7.0's plainer 'the lack of one', suggesting the absence is itself noteworthy rather than just factually true.形容词'conspicuous'比7.0分更平实的'the lack of one'更精确、更具评价性,暗示这种缺失本身就值得关注,而不仅仅是一个事实陈述。
    • GRAThe people worth studying probably won't be the famous ones at all — they'll be whoever the records happen to have preserved.Adds the intensifying tail 'at all' after the negative claim, and shifts the final verb to the more precise perfect aspect 'have preserved', a small but genuine refinement of 7.0's already strong closing sentence.在否定论断后加上了强调性的尾巴'at all',并把最后的动词变成更精确的完成时态'have preserved',这是对7.0分已经很有力的结尾句一次小但真实的打磨。
