6.5 分

The 6.5 answer gives one clear, simply worded reason for the gift ('a big and slightly scary step') and moves through the cue-card points with plain relative clauses.6.5分的答案用一个措辞简单、清楚的理由来说明送礼的原因(如'一个重大又有点吓人的转变'),并用朴素的定语从句依次带过题卡上的要点。

The gift I would like to buy is a small orchid plant for my friend Linh, from a flower shop near Dragon Bridge.

I've known Linh since secondary school in Hue, so more than fifteen years now. We don't live in the same city anymore, so we don't see each other very often, maybe only two or three times a year when she visits Da Nang or I go back to Hue for holidays. But we still message each other almost every week.

The gift I want to buy is an orchid, because Linh just moved into her first apartment by herself and she loves plants, but she doesn't have any yet. There's a small flower shop near Dragon Bridge that sells beautiful purple orchids in nice pots, and I think one would look perfect on her balcony.

I want to buy this gift for her because moving into a new home alone is a big and slightly scary step, and I remember how empty my own apartment felt at first. A plant would make her new place feel more alive and more like home, and every time she waters it, she might think of me a little.

  • FCI want to buy this gift for her because moving into a new home alone is a big and slightly scary step, and I remember how empty my own apartment felt at first. The reason given — that moving into a new home alone is 'a big and slightly scary step' — is immediately backed up with a personal memory of the speaker's own empty apartment, giving the claim one clear piece of supporting evidence. This single, directly relevant example is a straightforward but effective way to develop an answer, matching the Band 6.5 expectation that one reason plus one short example is enough.所给出的理由——独自搬进新家是 'a big and slightly scary step'——立刻用说话者自己空荡荡公寓的一段个人回忆加以佐证,为这一论断提供了一个清晰的支撑证据。这个单一、直接相关的例子,是发展回答的一种简单却有效的方式,符合6.5分"一个理由加一个简短例子即可"的期望。
  • LRa big and slightly scary step'A big and slightly scary step' uses two common adjectives joined with 'and' to describe an emotional experience through a familiar, slightly worn metaphor (life change as a 'step'), rather than more specific language about what actually feels uncertain. This kind of accessible, everyday phrasing for describing feelings is the plain vocabulary Band 6.5 lexical resource is targeting.'A big and slightly scary step' 用两个常见的形容词以 'and' 连接,通过一个熟悉、略显陈旧的隐喻(把人生变化比作一"步")来描述一种情感体验,而不是用更具体的语言说明究竟是什么让人感到不确定。这种平易近人、日常化的情感表达方式,正是6.5分词汇资源所瞄准的平实词汇。
  • GRAThere's a small flower shop near Dragon Bridge that sells beautiful purple orchids in nice pots, and I think one would look perfect on her balcony. An existential 'there's' clause is expanded with a relative clause ('that sells beautiful purple orchids...') and then joined by 'and' to a second main clause giving the speaker's opinion, which is a straightforward way of attaching descriptive detail to a location before adding a personal comment. This combination of one relative clause and one coordinated clause is accurate and clear without attempting anything more elaborate, consistent with Band 6.5's basic complex-sentence range.一个存在句 'there's' 结构被一个关系从句('that sells beautiful purple orchids...')扩展,随后用 'and' 连接到第二个主句,给出说话者的看法,这是一种在加入个人评论之前、为一个地点添加描述性细节的直接方式。这种一个关系从句加一个并列分句的组合,准确清晰,没有尝试更精心的结构,符合6.5分基础复杂句的范围。
7.0 分

The 7.0 answer adds a natural spoken connector ('Honestly, I also want her to think of home') and a comfortable complex sentence weighing the gift against something 'more practical', staying fluent without the more literary devices of 7.5.7.0分的答案加入了一个自然的口语连接语('说实话,我也希望她想起家乡'),并用一个运用自如的复合句把这份礼物和'更实用'的东西作了权衡,全程流畅,但没有用到7.5分那种更具文采的手法。

The gift I'd like to buy is a proper travel journal for my friend Mai, who's moving to Japan for work in a couple of months.

I've known Mai since we were at university together in Hue, so that's almost ten years now. These days we live in different cities, so we probably only see each other in person three or four times a year, usually when one of us visits the other for a weekend. We still talk almost every day online though, mostly sending each other photos and funny voice messages.

The reason I want to buy this particular gift is that Mai has always kept a diary, ever since I've known her, but she usually just uses a cheap notebook from any stationery shop. There's a small shop near the Han River that sells handmade notebooks with thick paper and leather covers, and you can even have her name pressed into the cover, which I think would make it feel more special than something ordinary.

I want to give her this rather than something more practical because I think the next few years in Japan are going to be full of things worth writing down, and I'd like the first version of that story to be in something that actually feels worth keeping. Honestly, I also want her to think of home a little whenever she opens it, since it would be a small reminder of Da Nang and the years we spent nearby each other. It's a simple idea, but I think it suits her much better than flowers or chocolate, which she'd probably forget within a week.

  • LRworth writing down'Worth writing down' is a natural adjective-plus-infinitive collocation that turns an abstract idea (experiences worth recording) into a compact phrase, rather than the more literal 'good to write about' a 6.5 answer might use. This kind of flexible, natural phrasing beyond the most basic wording is exactly the step up Band 7.0 lexical resource targets.'Worth writing down' 是一个自然的形容词加不定式搭配,把一个抽象的想法(值得记录的经历)变成一个简洁的短语,而不是一个6.5水平答案可能会用的更直白的说法'good to write about'。这种超越最基础措辞的灵活、自然的表达方式,正是Band 7.0词汇资源所瞄准的那一步进阶。
  • FCHonestly, I also want her to think of home a little whenever she opens itUses a natural spoken connector to add a more personal, reflective reason, developing the answer beyond the factual description expected at lower bands.用一个自然的口语连接词引出一个更私人、更具反思意味的理由,使回答超越了较低分数段那种单纯的事实性描述。
  • GRAI want to give her this rather than something more practical because I think the next few years in Japan are going to be full of things worth writing downThe sentence combines a comparison ('rather than something more practical') with a reason clause ('because I think the next few years... are going to be full of things worth writing down'), meaning the speaker justifies their gift choice against an implied alternative in the same breath as explaining it. Fusing a comparison and a reason into one accurate sentence, rather than stating them separately, is the comfortable complex-grammar range Band 7.0 is calibrated for.这句话把一个比较('rather than something more practical')与一个原因从句('because I think the next few years... are going to be full of things worth writing down')结合在一起,意味着说话人在解释自己选择这份礼物的同时,也在与一个隐含的替代选项作比较来为这个选择辩护。把一个比较和一个理由融合进一个准确的句子里,而不是分开陈述,正是Band 7.0所校准衡量的那种从容的复杂语法范围。
7.5 分

The 7.5 answer opens with a colon-led elaboration and a wry relative clause ('the kind you feel slightly guilty drawing in'), then closes with a self-aware, emotionally honest admission that goes beyond plain description.7.5分的答案以一个冒号引出的补充说明开头,并用一个略带俏皮的定语从句('那种让你动用积蓄时会有点心虚的礼物'),结尾则是一句自省、情感坦诚的自白,远远超越了单纯的描述。

The gift I'd like to buy is a hand-bound sketchbook for my friend Phương, and I've actually been putting it off for about a month, which is why it's on my mind.

Phương and I met in first year at university in Hanoi — she was the illustrator, I was the one designing interfaces, and we sat in the same corner of the studio for four years. These days we're in different cities, so we only see each other two or three times a year, usually when she comes down to Da Nang for a weekend and we spend most of it in cafés drawing the people around us. But we message almost daily, mostly pictures of things we've seen.

The reason for the gift is that she's moving to Melbourne in November to do a master's in animation, and I want to give her something before she leaves. There's a bookbinder in Hội An, an older man with a tiny workshop near the market, who makes sketchbooks with leather covers and thick, slightly rough paper, and you can have initials pressed into the corner. That's what I want: a heavy, beautiful notebook with her initials on it, the kind you feel slightly guilty drawing in.

Why this rather than something practical? Because every important thing Phương has ever made started as a scribble in a cheap notebook, and I've watched her fill dozens of them. A better notebook won't make her a better artist, but I'd like the first drawings she does in a new country to be in something made by hand, from the place she's leaving. And to be honest, I want to be a small part of the story when she opens it in a Melbourne café and thinks of home.

  • GRAThat's what I want: a heavy, beautiful notebook with her initials on it, the kind you feel slightly guilty drawing in.A colon introduces an elaboration and a relative clause adds a wry, understated observation, showing flexible, less-common sentence control at Band 7.5.冒号引出补充说明,定语从句又加入一句俏皮、含蓄的观察,展现出7.5分灵活、不常见的句子控制能力。
  • LRI'd like the first drawings she does in a new country to be in something made by handThis is precise, natural phrasing built around an unusual but grammatically controlled structure -- "the first drawings she does... to be in something" -- that expresses a specific, almost superstitious wish about symbolic beginnings, rather than the plainer statement a Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would offer ("I want her to have a nice notebook for her new drawings"). The phrase "made by hand" also carries more weight than a simple "handmade," since it's echoed by the earlier description of the Hội An bookbinder's workshop, tying the vocabulary choice back to a specific, real craftsperson rather than an abstract idea of quality.这是精准、自然的措辞,建立在一个不寻常却语法上把控得当的结构之上——"the first drawings she does... to be in something"——表达了一种关于象征性开端、近乎迷信的具体愿望,而不是Band 6.5或7.0答案会给出的更平实的说法("I want her to have a nice notebook for her new drawings")。短语"made by hand"也比简单的"handmade"承载更多分量,因为它呼应了前文对会安装订工坊的描述,把这个用词选择与一位具体、真实存在的手艺人重新联系起来,而不是一个关于品质的抽象概念。
  • FCAnd to be honest, I want to be a small part of the story when she opens it in a Melbourne café and thinks of home. This closing admission moves past the practical reasoning for the gift (durability, craftsmanship, symbolism) into an openly emotional, slightly vulnerable confession about the speaker's own motive -- wanting to be remembered -- which reframes the whole answer emotionally rather than simply restating why the notebook is a good present. A Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would be far more likely to end on a practical note about the gift's usefulness. The imagined future scene (a Melbourne café, Phương thinking of home) also gives the ending a genuinely narrative, forward-looking quality rather than closing on a flat statement of intent.

Sticks to short cause-and-effect sentences like 'Social media makes this worse, because...' rather than the compressed colon constructions the higher bands use.这篇答案坚持使用像"Social media makes this worse, because..."这样简短的因果句,而不是高分答案使用的那种凝练的冒号结构。

I agree. In Vietnam, wedding gifts are usually cash in an envelope, and the expected amount keeps rising every year. During wedding season, I can spend a week's salary on three or four weddings, and nobody wants to give less because the amount is written in a book. Social media makes this worse, because people post photos of gifts, so it has to look good. I think the real meaning of a gift gets lost this way. Still, the pressure is partly our own fault, because we don't trust each other to accept less.

    • FCStill, the pressure is partly our own fault, because we don't trust each other to accept less. The 6.5 version states the self-inflicted-pressure idea as a flat closing fact. 7.0 reframes it as a considered concession with 'That said', and 7.5 develops it into a semicolon-linked two-part sentence, so the idea is progressively argued rather than just stated.6.5分版本把"压力是自找的"这个想法作为一个平淡的结尾事实来陈述。7.0分用"That said"把它重新表述成一个经过思考的让步,而7.5分则把它发展成一个用分号连接的两部分句子,所以这个想法是逐步被论证出来的,而不只是被陈述出来。
    • LRmakes this worseA plain, generic verb phrase. 7.5 replaces it with the sharper, less common verb 'compounds it', which is more precise about one problem building on another.一个平实、笼统的动词短语。7.5分用更犀利、更不常见的动词"compounds it"(使之加剧)取代了它,更精确地表达出一个问题在另一个问题基础上不断累积。
    • GRAand nobody wants to give less because the amount is written in a bookA simple 'because' clause tacked onto a coordinated sentence. 7.0 and 7.5 both restructure a similar idea using a colon to set up a definition ('What gets lost... is the meaning:'), a more sophisticated device than this plain causal clause.一个简单的"because"分句附加在一个并列句上。7.0分和7.5分都用冒号来重新构建类似的想法,引出一个定义("What gets lost... is the meaning:"),这是一种比平实的因果分句更高明的手法。
    7.0 分

The hedge 'Honestly, I'd say yes' and the colon-led explanation give this a more considered, spoken-reflective feel than 6.5's flatter statements."Honestly, I'd say yes"这种缓和语,以及冒号引出的解释,比6.5分那种更平淡的陈述多了一层经过思考、口语化反思的感觉。

Honestly, I'd say yes, and in Vietnam the pressure is very concrete because wedding gifts are cash in an envelope, with the expected amount rising every year. During wedding season I can easily give away a week's salary across three or four ceremonies, and nobody dares give less, since the amounts get written down in a book. Social media makes it worse too — people post the gift, so it has to look impressive. What gets lost, I think, is the meaning: a thoughtfully chosen gift now looks cheap next to one that simply cost a lot. That said, the pressure is partly self-inflicted, because most people would happily accept less.

    • FCWhat gets lost, I think, is the meaning: a thoughtfully chosen gift now looks cheap next to one that simply cost a lot.Uses a colon to set up a precise definition of what's lost, going beyond 6.5's plain statement 'I think the real meaning of a gift gets lost this way'. 7.5 keeps almost the same structure, swapping 'I think' for 'I'd argue' and adding 'itself' for emphasis.用冒号来引出一个精确的、关于"什么被丢失了"的定义,超越了6.5分那种平实的陈述"I think the real meaning of a gift gets lost this way"。7.5分几乎保留了同样的结构,把"I think"换成"I'd argue",并加上"itself"以示强调。
    • LRmakes it worse tooStill a fairly plain intensifier. 7.5 replaces the whole verb with 'compounds it', a more precise, less everyday choice than this repeated 'worse' phrasing.这仍然是一个相当平实的强调语。7.5分用"compounds it"取代了整个动词,比这种重复出现的"worse"用法更精确,也更不常见。
    • GRAThat said, the pressure is partly self-inflicted, because most people would happily accept less.A single sentence with one causal clause. 7.5 extends a nearly identical sentence with a semicolon and a further clause, adding an extra layer of reasoning that this version leaves implicit.一个只有一个因果分句的单句。7.5分把一个几乎相同的句子用分号和一个额外的分句延伸了出去,增添了这个版本留而未表的一层推理。
    7.5 分

The verb 'compounds' and the semicolon-linked closing clause show the kind of layered sentence construction that separates this band from 7.0's already solid but simpler version.动词"compounds"以及用分号连接的结尾分句,展现出一种层次分明的造句方式,正是这个分数段区别于7.0分那种已经很扎实、但更简单的版本的地方。

I agree, and in Vietnam the pressure is refreshingly concrete: wedding gifts arrive as cash in an envelope, and the expected amount only ever climbs. During wedding season I can easily hand over a week's salary across three or four ceremonies, and nobody would dare give less, since the amounts are written down in a book for everyone to see later. Social media compounds it — people photograph the gift, so it has to look the part. What gets lost, I'd argue, is the meaning itself: a gift chosen with real thought now looks almost cheap beside one that simply cost a great deal. That said, I think the pressure is largely self-inflicted, because most people would happily accept less; we simply don't trust each other enough to say so.

    • FCWhat gets lost, I'd argue, is the meaning itself: a gift chosen with real thought now looks almost cheap beside one that simply cost a great deal.Nearly identical in content to the 7.0 sentence, but 'I'd argue' replaces 'I think' and 'itself' is added for emphasis — a small but deliberate sharpening of an idea that's already well-formed at 7.0.内容上与7.0分那句话几乎相同,但"I'd argue"取代了"I think",并加上"itself"以示强调——对一个在7.0分已经表达得很好的想法做了一个小而刻意的打磨。
    • LRSocial media compounds itA precise, slightly formal verb capturing a problem building on itself, more sophisticated than 6.5 and 7.0's shared, generic 'makes it/this worse'.一个精确、略正式的动词,捕捉到一个问题自我累积的过程,比6.5分和7.0分共用的、笼统的"makes it/this worse"更为高明。
    • GRAwe simply don't trust each other enough to say soA semicolon attaches a further explanatory clause after the 'because' clause, layering two levels of reasoning in one sentence — more ambitious than 7.0's single-clause version of the same closing thought.一个分号在"because"分句之后又附加了一个解释性分句,在一个句子里叠加了两层推理——比7.0分那种对同一个收尾想法的单分句版本更有野心。

I completely agree. I have bought my father a shirt for Tết three years in a row, and all three are still in their packaging because I always choose colours he never wears. Clothes are difficult because you need to know the right size, the person's taste, and how they like to look, and it's easy to get all of these wrong. Perfume and books are similar problems, because they are too personal. Gifts that work better are things people will use up, like food, or things where the giver's taste is the whole point, like something handmade.

    我完全同意。我连续三年在过年时给我爸买衬衫,结果三件都还原封不动地放在包装里,因为我每次挑的颜色他都不穿。衣服很难买,因为你需要知道合适的尺码、对方的品味,以及他们喜欢的穿衣风格,而这些方面很容易出错。香水和书也有类似的问题,因为它们太过个人化。效果更好的礼物是那些会被用完的东西,比如食物,或者那些送礼者的品味本身就是重点的东西,比如手工制品。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCand all three are still in their packaging because I always choose colours he never wearsStates the anecdote's outcome plainly. 7.0 sharpens the image slightly with 'sitting in their packaging', and 7.5 upgrades it further to 'sealed in their packaging', each adding a touch more precision to the same fact.平实地陈述了这段轶事的结果。7.0分用"sitting in their packaging"让画面略微生动了一些,7.5分则进一步升级为"sealed in their packaging",每一次都为同一个事实增添了一丝精确感。
    • LRtoo personalA simple, direct phrase. 7.5 extends this to 'too personal a call for someone else to make', a more idiomatic construction that frames the difficulty as a decision rather than just a quality of the item.一个简单、直接的短语。7.5分把它延伸为"too personal a call for someone else to make"(太过私人的决定,别人不该替你做),这是一种更地道的表达方式,把这个难题定性为一个决定,而不仅仅是物品的属性。
    • GRAClothes are difficult because you need to know the right size, the person's taste, and how they like to look, and it's easy to get all of these wrong.A long sentence built from a simple list plus a coordinated clause. 7.5 compresses the same idea into 'hinge on size, taste, and how someone wants to be seen, and you can miss on all three fronts at once', which is shorter and uses a more precise verb ('hinge on') than this version's plain 'need to know'.一个由简单列表加一个并列分句构成的长句。7.5分把同样的想法压缩成"hinge on size, taste, and how someone wants to be seen, and you can miss on all three fronts at once",比这个版本更短,而且用了更精确的动词("hinge on"),而不是这个版本平实的"need to know"。
    7.0 分

The hedge 'To be fair' and the aside 'I have direct evidence' give the anecdote a more conversational, self-aware framing than 6.5's plain 'I completely agree'."To be fair"这种缓和语,以及插入语"I have direct evidence",为这段轶事赋予了一种更口语化、更具自省意味的框架,比6.5分那种平实的"I completely agree"更胜一筹。

To be fair, I'd say clothes are almost the hardest thing to buy, and I have direct evidence: I've given my father a shirt for Tết three years running, and all three are still sitting in their packaging because I keep choosing colours he'd never actually wear. Clothes are tricky because they involve size, taste, and how someone wants to be seen, and you can easily get all three wrong at once. Perfume and books have the same problem — they're too personal. What tends to work is something consumable, like food, or something where the giver's own taste is the whole point, like a handmade gift. I think people buy clothes anyway because they're easy to find and look generous.

    • FCall three are still sitting in their packagingA slightly more vivid verb ('sitting') than 6.5's flat 'are still in their packaging'. 7.5 upgrades this again to 'sealed in their packaging', which is more precise still, showing steady refinement across the bands.一个比6.5分平淡的"are still in their packaging"稍显生动的动词("sitting")。7.5分再次将其升级为"sealed in their packaging",更加精确,展现出各分数段之间稳步的打磨。
    • LRinvolve size, taste, and how someone wants to be seenA cleaner, more compact list than 6.5's wordier 'need to know the right size, the person's taste, and how they like to look'. 7.5 tightens this even further with the verb 'hinge on' in place of 'involve'.一个比6.5分更冗长的"need to know the right size, the person's taste, and how they like to look"更简洁、更紧凑的列表。7.5分用动词"hinge on"取代"involve",把它压缩得更进一步。
    • GRAClothes are tricky because they involve size, taste, and how someone wants to be seen, and you can easily get all three wrong at once.A single sentence combining a reason clause and a result clause, more economical than 6.5's similar but slightly baggier version. 7.5 restructures the same content with the more precise verb 'hinge on' and 'miss on all three fronts', a small but real upgrade in phrasing.一个把原因分句和结果分句结合在一起的单句,比6.5分类似但略显拖沓的版本更经济。7.5分用更精确的动词"hinge on"和"miss on all three fronts"重新构建了同样的内容,是措辞上一个虽小但确实存在的升级。
    7.5 分

The idiom 'I have the receipts, so to speak' and the closing twist 'which is exactly why they end up unworn' give this version a wit that the more literal lower bands don't attempt.习语"I have the receipts, so to speak"以及结尾的反转"which is exactly why they end up unworn",为这个版本增添了一种低分答案不曾尝试的机智,那些答案更倾向于直白表述。

Completely agree, and I have the receipts, so to speak: I've bought my father a shirt for Tết three years running, and all three are still sealed in their packaging because I keep choosing colours he'd never once wear. Clothes are notoriously hard because they hinge on size, taste, and how someone wants to be seen, and you can miss on all three fronts at once. Perfume and books suffer from the same problem — they're simply too personal a call for someone else to make. What tends to work instead is something consumable, like food, or something where the giver's own taste is precisely the point, like a handmade gift. I suspect people buy clothes anyway because they're easy to find and look appropriately generous, which is exactly why they end up unworn.

    • FCI have the receipts, so to speakA playful idiom used self-referentially to introduce evidence, well beyond 6.5's plain opening 'I completely agree' and 7.0's more literal 'I have direct evidence'.一个诙谐的习语,以自我指涉的方式引出证据,远远超越了6.5分平实的开头"I completely agree"以及7.0分更直白的"I have direct evidence"。
    • LRtoo personal a call for someone else to makeA more idiomatic phrase than 6.5 and 7.0's shared plain 'too personal', framing the issue as a decision rather than a property, which is a subtler and more sophisticated way to make the point.一个比6.5分和7.0分共用的平实说法"too personal"更地道的短语,把这个问题定性为一个决定而不是一种属性,这是一种更微妙、更高明的表达方式。
    • GRAClothes are notoriously hard because they hinge on size, taste, and how someone wants to be seen, and you can miss on all three fronts at once.Reuses the 7.0 sentence's structure almost exactly but swaps in the more precise verb 'hinge on' and the idiom 'miss on all three fronts', showing this sentence pattern was already sound at 7.0 and mainly needed lexical sharpening.几乎完全沿用了7.0分句子的结构,只是换上了更精确的动词"hinge on"和习语"miss on all three fronts",说明这个句式在7.0分时就已经很扎实了,主要需要的只是词汇上的打磨。

Predictions are listed as separate simple sentences ('I think we will see...', 'Gifts may also become...') rather than woven together with the connective phrasing the higher bands use.各种预测是以独立的简单句形式列出的("I think we will see..."、"Gifts may also become..."),而不是像高分答案那样用连接性措辞编织在一起。

It is already changing towards digital and instant gifts. Last year my sister sent me a coffee voucher through Zalo at midnight on my birthday, and this is becoming normal. I think we will see more money and experiences given instead of objects, partly because young people move often and don't want extra things. Gifts may also become more personalised because companies use our data, which is convenient but a little strange. Some people might also want handmade or second-hand gifts more, because they take real effort. I also think some traditions, like the cash envelope, will probably never disappear.

    • FCconvenient but a little strangeA plain, everyday pair of adjectives. 7.0 and 7.5 both replace this with the more precise, slightly wry 'efficient but slightly unsettling', a tighter and more evaluative phrase.一对平实、日常的形容词。7.0分和7.5分都用更精确、略带戏谑意味的"efficient but slightly unsettling"取代了它,是一个更紧凑、更具评价性的短语。
    • LRwill probably never disappearA simple prediction. 7.5 develops this into 'will outlast every trend, since they solve the problem of taste completely', which is more figurative and gives a reason within the same breath.一个简单的预测。7.5分把它发展成"will outlast every trend, since they solve the problem of taste completely",更具比喻性,而且在同一口气里给出了理由。
    • GRAI think we will see more money and experiences given instead of objects, partly because young people move often and don't want extra things.A single sentence with one 'because' clause. 7.5 expresses a similar idea with the more vivid 'would rather not accumulate things to carry', a more idiomatic and economical way of phrasing the same reasoning.一个只有一个"because"分句的单句。7.5分用更生动的"would rather not accumulate things to carry"表达了类似的想法,是一种更地道、更经济的方式来表述同样的理由。
    7.0 分

The dash-led opening example and the colon in 'I'd expect more of that trend: money and experiences' let the prediction and its evidence sit in one flowing sentence.破折号引出的开头例子,以及"I'd expect more of that trend: money and experiences"中的冒号,让预测和其证据在同一个流畅的句子里得以呈现。

It's already shifting toward the digital and the instant — my sister sent me a coffee voucher through Zalo at midnight on my birthday, and that's becoming pretty normal. I'd expect more of that trend: money and experiences rather than physical objects, partly because young people move around a lot and don't want things to carry. Gifts will probably get more personalised through data too, which is efficient but slightly unsettling. That said, there might also be a pull in the opposite direction, with handmade and second-hand gifts gaining status precisely because they take effort. And I suspect some traditions, including the cash envelope in my own culture, will never really disappear, because they solve the problem of taste completely.

    • FCefficient but slightly unsettlingA more precise, evaluative pairing than 6.5's plain 'convenient but a little strange'. 7.5 reuses this exact phrase, showing it was already well-chosen at 7.0.一个比6.5分平实的"convenient but a little strange"更精确、更具评价性的搭配。7.5分沿用了这个确切的短语,说明它在7.0分时就已经是一个不错的选择了。
    • LRa pull in the opposite directionA neat, slightly abstract metaphor for a counter-trend, more sophisticated than 6.5's flatter 'Some people might also want... more'. 7.5 replaces it with the even more compact noun 'a countercurrent'.一个简洁、略带抽象意味的隐喻,用来形容一种反向趋势,比6.5分那种更平淡的"Some people might also want... more"更为高明。7.5分则用更凝练的名词"a countercurrent"(逆流)取代了它。
    • GRAThat said, there might also be a pull in the opposite direction, with handmade and second-hand gifts gaining status precisely because they take effort.A concessive opener plus a 'with' clause carrying the supporting detail, more layered than 6.5's separate simple sentence on the same idea. 7.5 compresses this further using a dash and the phrase 'in an age that mostly avoids it'.一个让步性的开头,加上一个承载支持细节的"with"分句,比6.5分对同一想法用独立简单句表达的方式更有层次。7.5分用破折号和短语"in an age that mostly avoids it"把它进一步压缩了。
    7.5 分

The closing image 'will outlast every trend' turns a simple prediction into an evaluative claim that the plainer lower bands don't reach for.结尾的意象"will outlast every trend"(将比任何潮流都更长久)把一个简单的预测变成了一个评价性论断,而更平实的低分答案不会去追求这一点。

It's already tilting toward the digital and the instant — my sister sent me a coffee voucher over Zalo at midnight on my birthday, and that's fast becoming the norm rather than the exception. I'd expect that trend to deepen: money and experiences taking over from physical objects, partly because young people move around constantly and would rather not accumulate things to carry. Gifts will likely grow more personalised through data as well, which is efficient and just slightly unsettling. There may also be a countercurrent, with handmade and second-hand gifts gaining real status precisely because they demand effort in an age that mostly avoids it. And I suspect certain traditions — the cash envelope in my own culture, for instance — will outlast every trend, since they solve the problem of taste completely.

    • FCbecoming the norm rather than the exceptionA more formal, almost analytical contrast pair than 6.5's plain 'becoming normal', giving the observation a more considered, essay-like edge.一对比6.5分平实的"becoming normal"更正式、近乎分析性的对比,为这个观察赋予了更深思熟虑、更像论说文的色彩。
    • LRa countercurrentA single, precise noun replacing 7.0's longer descriptive phrase 'a pull in the opposite direction', showing the kind of lexical compression typical of the top band.一个精确的单一名词,取代了7.0分那种更冗长的描述性短语"a pull in the opposite direction",展现出最高分段典型的词汇压缩能力。
    • GRAcertain traditions — the cash envelope in my own culture, for instance — will outlast every trend, since they solve the problem of taste completelyA dash-set aside interrupts the main clause to give a specific example before the sentence resolves, a more flexible structure than 7.0's straighter version of the same closing sentence, which states the example with 'including' rather than setting it apart.一个用破折号隔开的插入语,在句子收尾之前打断主句以给出一个具体例子,比7.0分那种对同一结尾句更直白的版本更灵活——那个版本用"including"来陈述例子,而不是把它单独隔开。

The reactions are named plainly ('it was very awkward') rather than dramatised, and each consideration gets its own short sentence rather than being folded together.反应是以平铺直叙的方式呈现出来的(“it was very awkward”),而不是被戏剧化处理,每一点考虑都单独成句,而不是融合在一起。

The person, before the occasion. A colleague once gave our boss expensive whisky for his birthday, without knowing he had quietly stopped drinking, and it was very awkward when he opened it. Think about what the person actually likes now, not what they liked years ago. Then you should think about whether they have space for it, because a big gift can be a burden for someone in a small flat. A very personal gift from someone you barely know also feels strange. Finally, be honest about whether you are buying it for them, or just to look good.

    • FCit was very awkward when he opened itA plain, general description of the moment. 7.0 and 7.5 both replace this with the more specific, sensory phrase 'the silence when/as he unwrapped it was awful/excruciating', which shows rather than states the discomfort.对这一刻平实、笼统的描述。7.0分和7.5分都用更具体、更具感官色彩的说法“the silence when/as he unwrapped it was awful/excruciating”取代了它,是用画面展现而不是直接陈述那种不适感。
    • LRfeels strangeA vague, everyday adjective. 7.0 and 7.5 both upgrade this to 'feels faintly/just uncomfortable', which is more precise about the degree and nature of the awkwardness.一个模糊、日常的形容词。7.0分和7.5分都把它升级为“feels faintly/just uncomfortable”,对尴尬的程度和性质表达得更精确。
    • GRAThen you should think about whether they have space for it, because a big gift can be a burden for someone in a small flat.A straightforward 'because' clause. 7.5 restructures a similar idea into 'a large gift to someone crammed into a small flat becomes a burden rather than a treat', which uses a sharper contrast ('burden rather than a treat') than this plainer causal sentence.一个直白的“because”分句。7.5分把类似的想法重新构建成“a large gift to someone crammed into a small flat becomes a burden rather than a treat”,用了一个比这句平实的因果句更犀利的对比(“burden rather than a treat”)。
    7.0 分

The added hedge 'honestly' right after the opening claim gives this a more spoken, considered feel than 6.5's blunt opening statement.紧跟在开头论断后加入的缓和语“honestly”,比6.5分那种直白的开头陈述多了一层口语化、经过思考的感觉。

The person, before the occasion, honestly. A colleague once gave our boss an expensive bottle of whisky for his birthday, not realising he'd quietly stopped drinking, and the silence when he unwrapped it was awful. So the first question is what the person actually likes now, not what they liked five years ago. Then there's whether they have space for it — a big gift to someone in a small flat becomes more of a burden than a treat. The relationship matters too, since an intimate gift from a distant acquaintance just feels uncomfortable. And finally, I'd say, whether you're buying it for them or to look good yourself, because recipients can usually tell the difference.

    • FCthe silence when he unwrapped it was awfulA specific, sensory image replacing 6.5's vague 'it was very awkward when he opened it'. 7.5 intensifies this once more to 'the silence as he unwrapped it was excruciating', pushing the same image further.一个具体、感官化的画面,取代了6.5分模糊的“it was very awkward when he opened it”。7.5分再次强化,变成“the silence as he unwrapped it was excruciating”,把同一个画面推得更远。
    • LRbecomes more of a burden than a treatA neat contrastive pairing ('burden... treat'), more developed than 6.5's plain 'can be a burden'. 7.5 keeps essentially the same contrast, showing this phrasing was already effective at 7.0.一个简洁的对比搭配(“burden... treat”),比6.5分平实的“can be a burden”更完善。7.5分基本保留了同样的对比,说明这个措辞在7.0分时就已经很有效了。
    • GRAThen there's whether they have space for it — a big gift to someone in a small flat becomes more of a burden than a treat.A dash introduces the elaboration directly after the question is raised, a more compact structure than 6.5's separate 'because' clause. 7.5 keeps a very similar shape here, with only 'large' and 'crammed into' adding extra precision.在问题提出之后,用破折号直接引出详细说明,比6.5分独立的“because”分句更紧凑。7.5分在这里保留了非常相似的形式,只是用“large”和“crammed into”增添了一点额外的精确度。
    7.5 分

The verb 'reads as' in 'reads as faintly uncomfortable' treats the reaction almost like a text to be interpreted, a more literary framing than the plainer verbs in the lower bands.“reads as faintly uncomfortable”中的动词“reads as”,几乎把这种反应当作一段需要被解读的文本来对待,比低分答案更平实的动词多了一层文学化的框架。

The person, well before the occasion. A colleague once handed our boss an expensive bottle of whisky for his birthday, not knowing he'd quietly given up drinking, and the silence as he unwrapped it was excruciating. So the first question is always what the person actually likes now, not what they liked five years ago or what people like them supposedly enjoy. Then comes the question of space — a large gift to someone crammed into a small flat becomes a burden rather than a treat. The relationship matters too: an intimate gift from a distant acquaintance reads as faintly uncomfortable. And finally, honestly, whether you're buying it for them or simply to look generous, because recipients can almost always tell which one it is.

    • FCthe silence as he unwrapped it was excruciatingThe strongest adjective of the three versions, intensifying 7.0's already vivid 'the silence... was awful' and far beyond 6.5's generic 'very awkward'.三个版本中最强烈的形容词,把7.0分已经很生动的“the silence... was awful”进一步强化,远远超越了6.5分笼统的“very awkward”。
    • LRreads as faintly uncomfortableA more literary, precise phrase than 7.0's plainer 'just feels uncomfortable', with 'reads as' suggesting a considered interpretation rather than a simple feeling.一个比7.0分更平实的“just feels uncomfortable”更文学化、更精确的短语,“reads as”暗示了一种经过思考的解读,而不只是一种单纯的感觉。
    • GRAThen comes the question of space — a large gift to someone crammed into a small flat becomes a burden rather than a treat.Inverts the subject and verb ('Then comes the question of space') for a more formal, essay-like rhythm than 7.0's plainer 'Then there's whether they have space for it', a small but genuine structural upgrade.把主语和动词倒装(“Then comes the question of space”),比7.0分更平实的“Then there's whether they have space for it”多了一层更正式、更像论说文的节奏,是一个虽小但确实存在的结构升级。

Tết is the biggest one. Every year my family visits relatives for three days, and you never arrive without a gift, like sweets, fruit, or tea, and children get lucky money in red envelopes. Weddings involve cash gifts, and the amount is written down, so it feels quite serious. Then there are more personal occasions, like a housewarming, a new baby's first month, visiting someone in hospital, and now birthdays too, even though these were not traditionally important in Vietnam. Teachers also receive gifts on Teachers' Day in November. Basically, gifts are given to show that you care about a relationship.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCBasically, gifts are given to show that you care about a relationship.A plain, generic closing statement. 7.0 and 7.5 both replace it with the more precise, almost aphoristic 'gifts mark relationships... you give to show you belong to someone', which is a sharper and more memorable way to close.一个平实、笼统的收尾陈述。7.0分和7.5分都用更精确、近乎格言式的“gifts mark relationships... you give to show you belong to someone”取代了它,是一种更犀利、更令人印象深刻的收尾方式。
    • LRit feels quite seriousA simple, general adjective phrase. 7.5 upgrades this to 'makes the whole thing feel quietly serious', where 'quietly' adds a more precise shade of meaning than the plain version here.一个简单、笼统的形容词短语。7.5分把它升级为“makes the whole thing feel quietly serious”,其中“quietly”比这里平实的版本多了一层更精确的意味。
    • GRAThen there are more personal occasions, like a housewarming, a new baby's first month, visiting someone in hospital, and now birthdays too, even though these were not traditionally important in Vietnam.A long sentence built from a simple list plus a trailing concessive clause. 7.5 restructures a similar list using a colon and reorders the concessive information into a relative clause, producing a tighter, more controlled sentence.一个由简单列表加一个尾随的让步分句构成的长句。7.5分用冒号重新构建了类似的列表,并把让步信息重新排列进一个定语从句里,写出了一个更紧凑、更有掌控力的句子。

The closing semicolon sentence ('gifts mark relationships more than events; you give to show you belong to someone') gives the summary an aphoristic, considered finish.结尾用分号连接的句子(“gifts mark relationships more than events; you give to show you belong to someone”)为这段总结赋予了一种格言式、经过深思的收尾感。

Tết is the big one, without question. Every year my family spends the first three days visiting relatives, and you never arrive empty-handed — sweets, fruit, tea — while children receive lucky money in red envelopes. Weddings mean cash gifts too, and the amount is recorded, so it's taken seriously. Then there are the more personal occasions: a housewarming, the first month of a new baby, visiting someone in hospital, and increasingly birthdays, which weren't traditionally a big Vietnamese thing but are becoming one. Teachers get gifts on Teachers' Day in November as well. I'd say the common thread is that gifts mark relationships more than events; you give to show you belong to someone.

    • FCI'd say the common thread is that gifts mark relationships more than events; you give to show you belong to someone.A precise, semicolon-linked closing claim, far more developed than 6.5's generic 'gifts are given to show that you care about a relationship'. 7.5 keeps this almost word for word, showing the phrasing was already strong here.一个用分号连接的精确的收尾论断,比6.5分笼统的“gifts are given to show that you care about a relationship”完善得多。7.5分几乎逐字保留了它,说明这个措辞在这里已经很扎实了。
    • LRyou never arrive empty-handedAn idiomatic phrase, more natural than 6.5's literal 'you never arrive without a gift'. 7.5 keeps this exact idiom, suggesting it was already at ceiling level.一个地道的短语,比6.5分直白的“you never arrive without a gift”更自然。7.5分保留了这个确切的习语,说明它已经达到了顶点水平。
    • GRAThen there are the more personal occasions: a housewarming, the first month of a new baby, visiting someone in hospital, and increasingly birthdays, which weren't traditionally a big Vietnamese thing but are becoming one.A colon introduces the list directly, a cleaner structure than 6.5's 'like' construction, and the trailing relative clause ('which weren't traditionally... but are becoming one') is more compact than 6.5's separate concessive clause.冒号直接引出列表,比6.5分的“like”结构更简洁,而尾随的定语从句(“which weren't traditionally... but are becoming one”)也比6.5分独立的让步分句更紧凑。

The idiom 'doing the rounds of relatives' and the conditional opener 'If there's a common thread, it's that...' give the closing observation a more polished, essay-like shape.习语“doing the rounds of relatives”(挨家挨户拜访亲戚)以及条件式开头“If there's a common thread, it's that...”,让结尾的观察更精练、更像一篇论说文。

Tết is the big one, without any real competition. Every year my family spends the first three days doing the rounds of relatives, and you never arrive empty-handed — a box of sweets, fruit, tea — while children collect lucky money in red envelopes. Weddings mean cash gifts, and the amount is recorded in a book, which makes the whole thing feel quietly serious. Then come the more personal occasions: a housewarming, the first month of a new baby, a hospital visit, and, increasingly, birthdays, which weren't traditionally much of a Vietnamese occasion but are fast becoming one. Teachers collect gifts too, on Teachers' Day every November. If there's a common thread, it's that gifts here mark relationships rather than events — you give to show you belong to someone.

    • FCdoing the rounds of relativesA natural, idiomatic phrase for the Tết visiting ritual, more vivid than 7.0's plainer 'visiting relatives' and 6.5's identical wording.一个用来形容过年拜访习俗的自然、地道的短语,比7.0分平实的“visiting relatives”以及6.5分完全相同的措辞更生动。
    • LRwithout any real competitionA more emphatic, idiomatic intensifier than 7.0's 'without question', suggesting Tết isn't just certain but clearly ahead of any rival occasion.一个比7.0分的“without question”更有力、更地道的强调语,暗示过年不仅是理所当然的,而且明显领先于任何其他竞争场合。
    • GRAIf there's a common thread, it's that gifts here mark relationships rather than events — you give to show you belong to someone.A conditional cleft structure ('If there's a common thread, it's that...') replaces 7.0's simpler 'I'd say the common thread is that...', giving the closing generalisation a more formal, deliberated shape while keeping the same core claim.一个条件式的强调结构(“If there's a common thread, it's that...”)取代了7.0分更简单的“I'd say the common thread is that...”,在保留同样核心论断的同时,让结尾的概括显得更正式、更经过斟酌。

The final point is added as a short separate sentence ('For some people, giving is also how they show love without saying it') rather than tied into a fuller closing reflection.最后一点是以一个简短、独立的句子加进去的(“For some people, giving is also how they show love without saying it”),而不是融入一个更完整的结尾思考中。

I think it's because giving lets you see the result, but receiving doesn't. When I gave my grandmother a digital photo frame with fifty family photos on it, watching her face while it changed pictures was worth more than anything I have ever received myself. Giving also feels like a nice kind of control, since you get the credit for being thoughtful. Receiving can feel awkward, especially if the gift is too generous, because then you feel like you owe something back. For some people, giving is also how they show love without saying it.

    • FCwatching her face while it changed pictures was worth more than anything I have ever received myselfA plain statement of value. 7.0 and 7.5 both add the specific detail 'as it cycled through her grandchildren', which grounds the claim in a concrete image rather than a general comparison.一个平实的价值陈述。7.0分和7.5分都加上了具体细节“as it cycled through her grandchildren”,把这个论断落实到一个具体的画面上,而不是一个笼统的比较。
    • LRfeel like you owe something backA simple, everyday way of describing indebtedness. 7.0 and 7.5 both upgrade this to the more precise phrase 'you're suddenly in someone's debt' or 'left in someone's debt', which is a tighter, slightly more formal collocation.一种简单、日常的方式来描述“欠人情”。7.0分和7.5分都把它升级为更精确的短语“you're suddenly in someone's debt”或“left in someone's debt”,这是一种更紧凑、略正式的搭配。
    • GRAFor some people, giving is also how they show love without saying it.A short, simple closing sentence. 7.5 develops the identical idea into a longer sentence with an added clause — 'so the satisfaction is really relief in disguise' — that draws a further conclusion instead of just stating the fact.一个简短、简单的收尾句。7.5分把完全相同的想法发展成一个更长的句子,加上了一个附加分句——“so the satisfaction is really relief in disguise”——得出了一个更进一步的结论,而不只是陈述事实。

The parenthetical clarifier 'in a nice sense' after 'a kind of control' shows a habit of qualifying claims mid-sentence that 6.5 doesn't attempt.在“a kind of control”之后加上的插入说明“in a nice sense”,展现出一种在句中限定论断的习惯,而这是6.5分答案没有尝试去做的。

Because giving lets you actually watch the effect, and receiving simply doesn't offer that. When I gave my grandmother a digital photo frame loaded with fifty family pictures, watching her face as it cycled through her grandchildren meant far more to me than anything I've ever unwrapped myself. Giving is also a kind of control, in a nice sense — you get to be thoughtful, and you get the credit for it. Receiving, by contrast, can feel awkward, especially if the gift is wrong or oddly generous, because you're suddenly in someone's debt. And for some people, honestly, giving is simply how they show love when they can't quite say it out loud.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCwatching her face as it cycled through her grandchildrenA concrete detail absent from 6.5's vaguer 'watching her face while it changed pictures'. 7.5 keeps this phrase nearly identical, showing it was already well-chosen at 7.0.一个在6.5分更模糊的“watching her face while it changed pictures”中缺失的具体细节。7.5分几乎原样保留了这个短语,说明它在7.0分时就已经是一个不错的选择了。
    • LRyou're suddenly in someone's debtA tighter, more idiomatic collocation than 6.5's plain 'feel like you owe something back'. 7.5 varies this slightly to 'left in someone's debt', a small further refinement.一个比6.5分平实的“feel like you owe something back”更紧凑、更地道的搭配。7.5分把它略微变化成“left in someone's debt”,是一个更进一步的小小打磨。
    • GRAReceiving, by contrast, can feel awkward, especially if the gift is wrong or oddly generous, because you're suddenly in someone's debt. The phrase 'by contrast' explicitly signals the shift from giving to receiving, a clearer transition device than 6.5's plain 'Receiving can feel a bit awkward too'. 7.5 keeps this same contrastive opener almost unchanged.短语“by contrast”明确标示出从“送礼”到“收礼”的转折,比6.5分平实的“Receiving can feel a bit awkward too”更清晰的过渡手法。7.5分几乎原样保留了这个对比性的开头。
    7.5 分

The closing phrase 'relief in disguise' draws a psychological conclusion that neither lower band reaches for, turning an observation into a small piece of analysis.结尾短语“relief in disguise”(伪装成满足的如释重负)得出了一个两个低分答案都没有触及的心理学结论,把一个观察变成了一小段分析。

Because giving lets you watch the effect land in real time, and receiving simply never offers that. When I gave my grandmother a digital photo frame loaded with fifty family photos, watching her face light up as it cycled through her grandchildren was worth more to me than anything I've ever unwrapped myself. Giving is also a quietly satisfying form of control — you get to be thoughtful, and you get to claim the credit for it. Receiving, by contrast, can feel genuinely awkward, especially if the gift is wrong or a little too generous, because you're suddenly left in someone's debt. And for some people, I suspect, giving is simply how love gets expressed when it can't quite be said out loud, so the satisfaction is really relief in disguise.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCwatch the effect land in real timeA more vivid, almost cinematic phrase than 7.0's plainer 'actually watch the effect', with 'land in real time' adding a sense of immediacy the simpler version lacks.一个比7.0分更平实的“actually watch the effect”更生动、近乎电影镜头感的短语,“land in real time”增添了一种更简单的版本所缺乏的即时感。
    • LRa quietly satisfying form of controlA more precise, compact noun phrase than 7.0's looser 'a kind of control, in a nice sense', folding the qualifier directly into the adjective 'quietly satisfying'.一个比7.0分更松散的“a kind of control, in a nice sense”更精确、更紧凑的名词短语,把限定语直接融入了形容词“quietly satisfying”里。
    • GRAso the satisfaction is really relief in disguiseA result clause draws a psychological conclusion from the preceding claim, a more analytical final move than 6.5's simple standalone sentence and 7.0's version, which stops just short of naming the underlying feeling.一个结果分句从前面的论断中得出了一个心理学结论,比6.5分简单独立的句子,以及7.0分那种差一点点就要点明潜在感受的版本,都更具分析性。

Some do, and I've seen the result myself. My cousin's kids in Ho Chi Minh City have a room where unopened toys are stacked almost to the ceiling, and the children actually play with the boxes instead. Usually this happens because of guilt, since parents who work long hours try to buy back the time they didn't spend with their kids. Sometimes it's competition with other parents, or simply that toys are cheap now, so saying yes is easier than saying no. The real problem isn't the toys themselves, but that each gift starts to mean less and less over time.

    • FCtry to buy back the time they didn't spend with their kidsA clear, literal explanation. 7.0 and 7.5 both tighten this to 'essentially buying back the time they didn't spend / never spent', dropping the extra clause 'with their kids' for a more economical phrase.一个清晰、直白的解释。7.0分和7.5分都把它收紧为“essentially buying back the time they didn't spend / never spent”,去掉了多余的“with their kids”,让表达更经济。
    • LRmean less and less over timeA simple repeated-word intensifier. 7.0 and 7.5 both replace it with the more precise verb phrase 'comes to mean progressively less' or 'ends up meaning less', which is more formal and less repetitive.一个简单的、重复用词的强调语。7.0分和7.5分都用更精确的动词短语“comes to mean progressively less”或“ends up meaning less”取代了它,更正式,也不那么重复。
    • GRAThe real problem isn't the toys themselves, but that each gift starts to mean less and less over time.A single 'not X but Y' sentence. 7.5 splits a similar idea into two clauses joined by a semicolon ('The problem was never really the objects; it's that...'), a more deliberate, two-beat structure than this one-breath version.一个单一的“不是X而是Y”句子。7.5分把类似的想法拆成两个用分号连接的分句(“The problem was never really the objects; it's that...”),比这个一口气说完的版本更刻意、更有两拍的节奏感。

The semicolon in 'The problem isn't really the objects; it's that each one ends up meaning less' marks a more deliberate two-part structure than 6.5's single-breath version.“The problem isn't really the objects; it's that each one ends up meaning less”中的分号,标示出一种比6.5分那种一口气说完的版本更刻意的两部分结构。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCessentially buying back the time they didn't spendTighter than 6.5's 'try to buy back the time they didn't spend with their kids', dropping the redundant final clause. 7.5 keeps this phrase almost identical, with only 'never spent' as a small variation.比6.5分的“try to buy back the time they didn't spend with their kids”更紧凑,去掉了多余的结尾分句。7.5分几乎原样保留了这个短语,只用“never spent”做了一点小变化。
    • LRends up meaning lessA more formal, less repetitive phrase than 6.5's 'mean less and less over time'. 7.5 varies this again to 'comes to mean progressively less', adding still more precision.一个比6.5分的“mean less and less over time”更正式、更不重复的短语。7.5分再次变化,变成“comes to mean progressively less”,增添了更多精确度。
    • GRAThe problem isn't really the objects; it's that each one ends up meaning less, and children stop feeling any real anticipation.A semicolon divides the sentence into a denial and a correction, more structurally deliberate than 6.5's single 'not X but Y' clause. 7.5 keeps this same two-part shape with minor lexical polish.一个分号把句子分成了一个否定和一个纠正,比6.5分单一的“不是X而是Y”分句在结构上更刻意。7.5分保留了同样的两部分形式,并做了一些细微的词汇打磨。

Usually it's guilt underneath it all, with parents who work long hours essentially buying back the time they never spent. Sometimes it's quiet competition with other parents, or simply that toys have become cheap enough that saying yes is easier than saying no. The problem was never really the objects; it's that each one comes to mean progressively less, and children stop feeling any real anticipation at all. My own parents gave us very little and turned each gift into an occasion, and I still, to this day, remember every one.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCwatched the result unfold up closeA more dynamic verb phrase ('unfold') than 7.0's static 'seen the result up close', suggesting a process observed over time rather than a single glance.一个比7.0分静态的“seen the result up close”更有动态感的动词短语(“unfold”),暗示了一个随着时间展开的过程,而不是一瞥而过的观察。
    • LRcomes to mean progressively lessThe most formal and precise of the three versions ('mean less and less', 'ends up meaning less', 'comes to mean progressively less'), with 'progressively' adding a sense of gradual change the plainer versions lack.三个版本中最正式、最精确的一个(“mean less and less”、“ends up meaning less”、“comes to mean progressively less”),“progressively”增添了一种更平实的版本所缺乏的渐进变化感。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCeven though I am twenty-eight and grew up on motorbikesA simple concessive clause stating two facts. 7.0 and 7.5 both set this off with dashes instead ('— I'm twenty-eight and grew up almost entirely on motorbikes —'), a more integrated, parenthetical way of inserting the same self-deprecating detail.一个陈述两个事实的简单让步分句。7.0分和7.5分都改用破折号把它隔开(“— I'm twenty-eight and grew up almost entirely on motorbikes —”),用一种更融合、更插入式的方式加入同样的自嘲细节。

The dash-set aside about being twenty-eight lets the self-deprecating detail sit inside the sentence rather than trailing after it as a separate clause, as in 6.5.用破折号隔开的关于“二十八岁”的插入语,让这个自嘲的细节嵌在句子内部,而不是像6.5分那样作为一个独立分句拖在后面。

Time, mostly, and skills, honestly. The best gift I received last year was a friend giving up an entire Saturday to finally teach me how to ride a bicycle properly — I'm twenty-eight and grew up almost entirely on motorbikes — and I think about it every time I cycle along the river. People could give a cooked meal, a repaired bike, a lift to the airport at five in the morning, or a written letter, which almost nobody sends anymore and everyone somehow keeps forever. Shared experiences work well too: a trip, a class, a concert. What all of these have in common, I'd say, is that they cost effort rather than money, and effort is genuinely what people are short of.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI'm twenty-eight and grew up almost entirely on motorbikesSet off by dashes as a parenthetical aside, a more integrated structure than 6.5's trailing 'even though' clause. 7.5 keeps this almost word for word, showing the phrasing was already strong here.用破折号隔开,作为一个插入性的补充说明,比6.5分拖在后面的“even though”分句更融为一体。7.5分几乎逐字保留了它,说明这个措辞在这里已经很扎实了。
    • LRa cooked meal, a repaired bike, a lift to the airport at five in the morning, or a written letterA cleanly parallel list of noun phrases, tighter than 6.5's mixed list that includes the verb phrase 'help repair something'. 7.5 keeps a nearly identical parallel list.一个干净利落的、并列的名词短语列表,比6.5分混杂了动词短语“help repair something”的列表更紧凑。7.5分保留了几乎完全相同的并列列表。
    • GRAWhat all of these have in common, I'd say, is that they cost effort rather than money, and effort is genuinely what people are short of.A cleft sentence ('What all of these have in common... is that...') frames the generalisation more formally than 6.5's plain 'All of these cost effort instead of money'. 7.5 restructures the ending further with the metaphor 'the currency... running short of'.一个强调句(“What all of these have in common... is that...”)比6.5分平实的“All of these cost effort instead of money”更正式地构建了这个概括。7.5分用“the currency... running short of”这个隐喻进一步重新构建了结尾。

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCa friend sacrificing an entire SaturdayThe verb 'sacrificing' is stronger and more evaluative than 7.0 and 6.5's plainer 'giving up', suggesting genuine cost to the giver rather than a simple act of generosity.动词“sacrificing”比7.0分和6.5分更平实的“giving up”更有力、更具评价色彩,暗示了给予者真正付出的代价,而不仅仅是一个简单的慷慨举动。
    • LRthe currency most people are actually running short ofA more original, extended metaphor than 7.0's plainer 'effort is genuinely what people are short of', with 'currency' framing effort as something that can be spent and saved.一个比7.0分更平实的“effort is genuinely what people are short of”更具原创性、更延伸的隐喻,“currency”把心力塑造成一种可以被花费和积攒的东西。

Partly because they can imagine being that stranger themselves. When floods hit central Vietnam a few years ago, I donated within minutes, because the photos of a flooded street looked exactly like my grandmother's neighbourhood in Hue, so the distance suddenly felt very small. Religion and upbringing matter for a lot of people too, along with the feeling of doing something about bad news instead of feeling helpless. Trust also matters, because people give to charities they have seen actually help before. And there's a quieter reason too, which is that giving simply makes you feel like a good person, and that's not really a bad reason.

    • FCthe distance suddenly felt very smallA literal description of the feeling. 7.0 and 7.5 both replace this with the more vivid, compact verb 'the distance just collapsed / simply collapsed', a stronger and more figurative way to express the same shrinking of emotional distance.一个对这种感觉的直白描述。7.0分和7.5分都用更生动、更紧凑的动词“the distance just collapsed / simply collapsed”取代了它,是一种更有力、更具比喻性的方式来表达同样的情感距离缩短。
    • LRcharities they have seen actually help beforePlain, everyday wording. 7.0 and 7.5 both upgrade this to 'charities they've actually/personally seen deliver', where 'deliver' is a more precise, slightly more formal verb than the general 'help'.平实、日常的措辞。7.0分和7.5分都把它升级为“charities they've actually/personally seen deliver”,其中“deliver”是一个比笼统的“help”更精确、略正式的动词。
    • GRAAnd there's a quieter reason too, which is that giving simply makes you feel like a good person, and that's not really a bad reason.A single long sentence joined with 'which is' and 'and'. 7.5 restructures a nearly identical idea into two separate clauses with a parenthetical concession ('and that's not, in the end, such a bad reason to have'), giving the same content a more deliberate, paced delivery.一个用“which is”和“and”连接起来的单一长句。7.5分把几乎完全相同的想法重新构建成两个独立的分句,并加上一个插入式的让步(“and that's not, in the end, such a bad reason to have”),让同样的内容有了更刻意、更有节奏的表达方式。
    7.0 分

The dash-led compression 'the distance just collapsed' replaces a full clause with a striking three-word image, a hallmark of this band's more efficient phrasing.用破折号引出的压缩表达“the distance just collapsed”,用三个词的鲜明意象取代了一个完整分句,是这个分数段更高效措辞的一个标志。

Partly because they can picture themselves as the stranger. When floods hit central Vietnam a few years back, I donated within minutes, because the photos of a submerged street looked exactly like my grandmother's neighbourhood in Hue — the distance just collapsed. Religion and upbringing matter for many people, as does the simple feeling of doing something about news that would otherwise just leave you feeling helpless. Trust is a big factor too: people tend to give to charities they've actually seen deliver. And there's a quieter motive that nobody much likes to admit, which is that giving makes you feel like a good person, and honestly, that's not such a bad reason after all.

    • FCthe distance just collapsedA compact, figurative verb phrase replacing 6.5's longer, literal 'the distance suddenly felt very small'. 7.5 keeps this phrase almost unchanged, showing it was already a strong choice at 7.0.一个紧凑、比喻性的动词短语,取代了6.5分更冗长、直白的“the distance suddenly felt very small”。7.5分几乎原样保留了这个短语,说明它在7.0分时就已经是一个不错的选择。
    • LRcharities they've actually seen deliverA more precise verb ('deliver') than 6.5's vaguer 'actually help before'. 7.5 intensifies this slightly to 'personally seen deliver on their promises', adding further specificity.一个比6.5分更模糊的“actually help before”更精确的动词(“deliver”)。7.5分把它稍微强化为“personally seen deliver on their promises”,增添了更多具体性。
    • GRAAnd there's a quieter motive that nobody much likes to admit, which is that giving makes you feel like a good person, and honestly, that's not such a bad reason after all.A relative clause ('that nobody much likes to admit') is inserted before the main point is given, a more layered structure than 6.5's flatter 'a quieter reason too, which is...'. 7.5 keeps this same layered shape almost unchanged.一个定语从句(“that nobody much likes to admit”)插入在主要观点给出之前,比6.5分更平淡的“a quieter reason too, which is...”更有层次。7.5分几乎原样保留了这种有层次的结构。
    7.5 分

The short final sentence 'The result for the stranger is identical either way' delivers a compact, evaluative closing observation that neither lower band includes.简短的结尾句“The result for the stranger is identical either way”给出了一个两个低分答案都没有的、紧凑且具评价性的收尾观察。

Partly because they can picture themselves as the stranger in question. When floods hit central Vietnam a few years back, I donated within minutes, because the photos of a submerged street looked exactly like my grandmother's neighbourhood in Hue — the distance simply collapsed. Religion and upbringing matter enormously for many people, as does the plain feeling of doing something about news that would otherwise just leave you feeling helpless. Trust is a significant factor too: people tend to give to charities they've personally seen deliver on their promises. And there's a quieter motive that nobody much likes to admit, which is that giving makes the giver feel like a decent person, and that's not, in the end, such a bad reason to have. The result for the stranger is identical either way.

    • FCThe result for the stranger is identical either way.An extra closing sentence not present in 6.5 or 7.0, adding a final evaluative twist — the motive may be selfish or selfless, but the outcome doesn't change — that rounds off the argument rather than just ending on the last listed reason.一个在6.5分或7.0分中都不存在的额外收尾句,加上了一个最后的评价性转折——动机也许自私也许无私,但结果并不会因此改变——为整个论证画上一个圆满的句号,而不只是停在最后列出的那个理由上。
    • LRdeliver on their promisesA fuller, more precise phrase than 7.0's 'actually seen deliver', specifying exactly what the charity is delivering on rather than leaving the verb without an object.一个比7.0分的“actually seen deliver”更完整、更精确的短语,明确说明了慈善机构究竟兑现了什么,而不是让这个动词没有宾语。
    • GRAand that's not, in the end, such a bad reason to haveA parenthetical aside ('in the end') is inserted mid-clause, a more flexible structure than 7.0's straighter 'and honestly, that's not such a bad reason after all', showing finer control over where a qualifying phrase can sit inside a sentence.一个插入语(“in the end”)被嵌在分句中间,比7.0分更直白的“and honestly, that's not such a bad reason after all”更灵活,展现出对限定性短语在句中位置更精细的掌控。
