6.5 分

The 6.5 answer gives one clear reason for the difficulty ('living alone in Da Nang is more expensive') and one straightforward source of help (a conversation with a friend), staying factual and direct throughout, typical of Band 6.5.Band 6.5 的答案给出了一个清楚的困难理由(比如'一个人在岘港生活开销更大'),以及一个直接的帮助来源(和朋友的一次谈话),全程保持陈述事实、直截了当,是 Band 6.5 的典型表现。

The difficult decision I want to talk about is deciding to move out and live alone, about two years ago. Before that, I was sharing an apartment with two other girls near Han Market, and it was cheaper, but also quite noisy and crowded.

It was a difficult decision because living alone in Da Nang is more expensive, and I was a little worried about being lonely, since I had never lived by myself before. My roommates were also good friends, so I felt a bit guilty about leaving them.

What helped me decide was a long conversation with my friend Hà over coffee. She had already lived alone for a year, and she told me honestly about both the good and bad sides, like having more peace but sometimes feeling quiet in the evenings. Hearing her real experience made me feel braver about trying it myself.

The result was actually very good. I found a small one-bedroom apartment near the Han River, and I really enjoy having my own space now. I can focus better on my design work at home, and I sleep better without noise. I still meet my old roommates regularly, so I didn't really lose the friendship, I just gained some peace and independence.

  • LRI felt a bit guilty"A bit guilty" softens a fairly complex social emotion (leaving friends she lived with) down to a single common adjective with a minimising hedge, rather than a more specific description like "torn" or "conflicted" that might better capture the mix of relief and loyalty at play. This simplicity keeps the emotional register light and conversational, but it also means the sentence doesn't fully convey the nuance the surrounding story suggests (weighing independence against friendship). That gap between plain vocabulary and more complex underlying feeling is characteristic of Band 6.5 lexical resource."A bit guilty"把一种相当复杂的社会情感(离开曾经同住的朋友)软化成一个带有弱化缓和语的普通形容词,而不是像"torn"或"conflicted"这样更具体的描述,本可以更好地捕捉到那种解脱感与忠诚感交织的复杂心情。这种简洁保持了情感基调的轻松、口语化,但也意味着这句话没有完全传达出周围故事所暗示的那种细微差别(权衡独立与友情)。这种平实词汇与更复杂的内在情感之间的落差,正是Band 6.5词汇资源的特征。
  • FCWhat helped me decide was a long conversation with my friend Hà over coffee. The cleft-like structure "what helped me decide was..." directly answers the cue-card question about what influenced the decision, naming the deciding factor in a single sentence before the following sentences unpack what was actually said in that conversation. This is efficient and on-topic but doesn't build suspense or reflection into the sentence itself — it simply states the fact and moves on, the minimal-development pattern the Band 6.5 fluency descriptor associates with "one clear reason is enough."类似强调句的结构"what helped me decide was..."直接回答了cue card关于是什么影响了这个决定的问题,在一句话里点出了决定性因素,然后后面的句子才展开说明那次对话中到底说了什么。这样处理高效且切题,但没有在句子本身内构建悬念或反思——它只是简单地陈述事实然后继续往下,这正是Band 6.5流利度描述语与"一个清楚的理由就足够了"相关联的最低限度展开模式。
  • GRAsince I had never lived by myself beforeThis is a single reason clause introduced by "since," tacked onto the end of the main statement about being worried, adding one layer of subordination without any further nesting or a second linked idea. The past perfect "had never lived" is used correctly to mark that this was true before the point in time being discussed, a small but genuine piece of grammatical control. Overall, though, one subordinate clause per sentence is the ceiling of complexity the descriptor expects at Band 6.5, rather than the multiple linked clauses a 7.0+ answer might combine.这是一个由"since"引导的单一理由从句,挂接在关于担忧的主要陈述末尾,增加了一层从属结构,没有进一步嵌套,也没有第二个关联想法。过去完成时"had never lived"被准确地用来标记这一点在所讨论的那个时间点之前就已成立,是一个虽小却真实的语法控制细节。不过总体而言,每句一个从句正是描述语对Band 6.5所期待的复杂度上限,而不是Band 7.0以上答案可能会组合的多个关联从句。
7.0 分

The 7.0 answer develops the decision with a two-sided comparison (what I'd gain versus what I'd lose) and natural connectors like 'on top of that' and 'once I saw it written down', showing comfortable development without idiomatic flourish.Band 7.0 的答案通过一个双向对比(会得到什么 vs. 会失去什么)来展开这个决定,并使用'除此之外''等我真把它写下来一看'这类自然的连接词,展现出自如的展开能力,而不刻意炫耀习语。

The decision I'd like to talk about is turning down a job offer about two years ago. A fintech company in Ho Chi Minh City offered me a position as a senior product designer, and the salary was around forty percent higher than what I was earning at the small studio in Da Nang, where I still work now.

It was a difficult decision for a few reasons. The money was obviously tempting - that kind of jump doesn't happen often when you're still in your twenties. My parents were quietly delighted too, because to them, working for a big company in the biggest city is what success looks like. On top of that, I had this nagging worry that turning it down meant I wasn't ambitious enough, and that I'd end up designing small apps for local businesses while my old classmates moved ahead.

What helped me decide was going back to Hue for a weekend and doing something simple: writing two columns on a piece of paper. On one side, what I'd gain - more money, a bigger name on my CV. On the other side, what I'd lose - the beach every morning, being close to my grandmother, and a boss who lets me take charge of whole products instead of one screen of a huge app. Once I saw it written down, the second list was not only longer but full of things I couldn't easily get back later.

The result turned out better than I expected. Within a year, the studio put me in charge of our first app for a hospital chain, which is exactly the kind of responsibility I might have waited years for. My salary caught up more than I thought it would too, and I learned that I make much better decisions when I write them down instead of thinking them over in my head.

  • FCOnce I saw it written down, the second list was not only longerThis sentence marks the narrative's turning point — the moment the two-column exercise actually changed the speaker's thinking — using the time clause 'Once I saw it written down' to show the realisation was triggered by a concrete action, not vague reflection. A 6.5 answer would likely state the conclusion flatly ('The second list was longer, so I stayed'); a 7.5 answer might push the insight into an explicit trade-off statement. Left deliberately incomplete here (continuing into 'but full of things I couldn't easily get back later'), it gives the answer real narrative shape rather than a list of facts, the fuller development 7.0 rewards.这句话标志着叙述的转折点——两栏对比练习真正改变说话人想法的那一刻——通过时间从句 'Once I saw it written down' 表明这个顿悟是由一个具体行动触发的,而不是模糊的反思。Band 6.5的答案很可能会平铺直叙地给出结论('The second list was longer, so I stayed');Band 7.5的答案则可能把这层领悟推进为一句明确的权衡陈述。这里刻意让句子留有余韵(接续到 'but full of things I couldn't easily get back later'),赋予了答案真正的叙事结构,而不只是罗列事实,这正是Band 7.0所奖励的那种更充分的展开。
  • LRcaught up more than I thought it would'Caught up' is used in its extended, non-literal sense — money catching up to an alternative path — rather than its literal meaning, showing flexible reuse of an everyday verb instead of reaching for a technical term like 'matched.' A 6.5 answer would likely state this more plainly ('My salary became good too'); a 7.5 answer might use a more idiomatic financial phrase. This natural, slightly extended use of common vocabulary is exactly the 'few flexible or topic-specific' words the 7.0 descriptor asks for, resolving the salary-gap worry raised at the start of the answer.'Caught up' 在这里被用于其引申的、非字面的意义上——指薪水追赶上另一条道路——而不是其字面含义,展现出对一个日常动词的灵活再利用,而不是去寻找像 'matched' 这样的专业术语。Band 6.5的答案很可能会更直白地表达这个意思('My salary became good too');Band 7.5的答案则可能使用更具习语色彩的财务用语。这种自然、略带引申意味的常见词汇用法,正是7.0分描述语所要求的“少量灵活或话题相关”的用词,也化解了答案开头提出的薪资差距这一担忧。
  • GRAand that I'd end up designing small apps for local businesses while my old classmates moved aheadA reported-speech 'that'-clause expressing the narrator's fear is combined with a contrastive 'while'-clause comparing two parallel futures — staying small versus classmates advancing — inside one accurate sentence. A 6.5 answer would likely state the same fear as two separate plain sentences; a 7.5 answer might additionally invert or front the contrast for effect. This mix of reported thought plus simultaneous contrast is comfortable complexity squarely at 7.0, capturing the specific status anxiety that made the decision genuinely difficult.

The 7.5 answer uses the precise phrase 'that kind of jump doesn't come along often' and a wider range of complex structures, including the closing reflection on how the writer makes decisions, marking it as genuine Band 7.5 language.Band 7.5 的答案使用了精准的表达 'that kind of jump doesn't come along often'(这种跳跃式的机会并不常有),并运用了更丰富多样的复杂句式,包括结尾对自己如何做决定的反思,这些都标志着这是货真价实的 Band 7.5 语言水平。

The decision I'd talk about is turning down a job offer about two years ago. A fintech company in Ho Chi Minh City wanted me as a senior product designer, and the salary was roughly forty percent more than I was earning at the small studio in Da Nang where I still work today.

It was difficult for a few reasons. The money, obviously — that kind of jump doesn't come along often when you're in your twenties. My parents were quietly thrilled, because to them a big company in the biggest city is simply what success looks like. And I had this nagging fear that saying no meant I wasn't ambitious enough, that I'd be stuck designing small apps for local businesses while my classmates from Hanoi moved up.

What helped, honestly, was going home to Hue for a weekend and doing something very unglamorous: writing two columns on a piece of paper. On one side, what I'd gain — money, a bigger name on my CV. On the other, what I'd lose — the beach every morning, being two hours from my grandmother, and, crucially, a boss who let me own whole products rather than one screen of a giant app. Seeing it written down, the second column was longer and, more importantly, it was full of things I couldn't buy back later.

The result was better than I'd hoped. Within a year the studio put me in charge of our first app for a hospital chain, which is exactly the kind of responsibility I'd have waited five years for at the fintech. My salary caught up more than I expected too. But mostly I learnt that I make better decisions when I write them down and look at them in daylight.

  • LRthat kind of jump doesn't come along often"Come along" here is used idiomatically to mean "occur" or "present itself," a natural collocation about opportunities that a Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would more likely express literally ("opportunities like that are rare"). Referring to the pay rise abstractly as "that kind of jump" also avoids simply repeating "the raise" or "the salary increase," showing some lexical variation rather than word repetition. The phrase captures the pull of temptation -- a rare, tantalising chance -- that the rest of the paragraph goes on to weigh against personal costs."Come along"在这里被用作习语,意思是"出现"或"呈现自己",这是一种关于机会的自然搭配,而Band 6.5或7.0的答案更可能用字面说法来表达("opportunities like that are rare")。把这次加薪抽象地称为"that kind of jump",也避免了单纯重复"the raise"或"the salary increase",展现出一定的词汇变化而非用词重复。这个短语捕捉到了诱惑的吸引力——一次难得、诱人的机会——而这段话接下来正是要把它与个人代价放在一起权衡。
  • GRASeeing it written down, the second column was longer and, more importantly, it was full of things I couldn't buy back later. The participial opening 'Seeing it written down' combined with an inserted comment clause shows the flexible, wider grammatical range expected at Band 7.5.以分词短语 'Seeing it written down'(看到它被写下来)开头,再搭配一个插入的评论性分句,体现出 Band 7.5 所要求的更灵活、更广的语法范围。
  • FCI learnt that I make better decisions when I write them down and look at them in daylightRather than simply stating the outcome of the decision, the speaker draws a broader, generalisable lesson about their own decision-making process, moving from this one specific story to a claim about how they operate in general -- exactly the evaluative depth beyond narration that the 7.5 fluency descriptor asks for. A Band 6.5 or 7.0 answer would more likely end by restating the result (the job at the studio worked out well) rather than reflecting on the method that produced it. The image "look at them in daylight" is also a light metaphor for clarity and honesty, giving the closing line a memorable, almost proverbial quality.

This answer sticks to short, plain sentences joined by simple connectors like 'and' and 'so', giving one direct reason (speed) and one everyday example (the lobby colour) without any hedging or complex clause-building.这个回答坚持使用由'and'和'so'这类简单连接词连接的简短、平实的句子,给出了一个直接的原因(速度)和一个日常例子(大堂颜色),没有任何缓和语气或复杂的从句构建。

I think the biggest problem would be speed. In my building, the residents' group took eight months just to choose a colour for the lobby, and that was only two hundred households talking about paint. If a whole country tried to decide everything together, something urgent like a flood would take too long to deal with. Also, when everyone decides together, people often pick the safest choice, not the best one. So collective decisions are fair, but they are usually too slow for real problems.

    • FCAlso, when everyone decides together,The answer moves between ideas using the plain linking word 'Also' rather than a more natural spoken discourse marker. A band 7 answer would likely use something like 'to be fair' or 'honestly' to signal a shift in the argument, while a band 6.5 candidate relies on the most basic additive connector available.这个回答用平实的连接词'Also'在各个想法之间转换,而不是用更自然的口语话语标记。7分的回答很可能会用'to be fair'或'honestly'这样的表达来标示论证的转折,而6.5分的考生则依赖于最基础的加合连接词。
    • LRthe safest choice, not the best oneThe vocabulary here is entirely common, everyday word choice ('safest', 'best') with no attempt at a less frequent word or collocation. A higher band answer would likely reach for something like 'drift toward the least offensive option' instead of the flatter 'safest choice, not the best one'.这里的词汇完全是常见的日常用词选择('safest'、'best'),没有尝试使用不太常见的词或搭配。更高分段的回答很可能会用'drift toward the least offensive option'这样的表达,而不是更平淡的'safest choice, not the best one'。
    • GRAIf a whole country tried to decide everything together, something urgent like a flood would take too long to deal with. This is a single, complete conditional sentence with one clause per idea, which is grammatically accurate but structurally simple. A band 7.5 response would likely compress this into a fronted or participial construction rather than laying out the condition and result as two plainly joined clauses.这是一个完整的条件句,每个想法各占一个从句,语法上准确,但结构简单。7.5分的回答很可能会把它压缩成一个前置结构或分词结构,而不是把条件和结果作为两个平铺连接的从句展开。
    7.0 分

The natural spoken openers 'Honestly, I'd say' and 'To be fair' give this answer a reflective, conversational tone beyond the plain declarative style of a 6.5 response, while one sentence stacks two subordinate ideas together without reaching the fully compressed grammar of a 7.5 answer.自然的口语开头'Honestly, I'd say'和'To be fair',让这个回答带有一种超越6.5分平铺直叙风格的反思性、对话式语气,而其中一个句子把两个从属想法叠加在一起,但还没有达到7.5分那种完全压缩的语法。

Honestly, I'd say speed would be the biggest casualty. My building's residents' group needed eight months to agree on a colour for the lobby, and that was just two hundred households discussing paint, so imagine a whole society trying to agree on something urgent like a flood response. To be fair, there's also a quality issue, because collective decisions tend to drift toward whatever offends the fewest people rather than the boldest option. And someone still has to frame the question in the first place, which means power doesn't really disappear, it just becomes less visible. Collective input is useful, but deciding everything together would be paralysis.

    • FCTo be fair, there's also a quality issueThe discourse marker 'To be fair' signals the speaker weighing a second point against the first, which is the kind of natural hedging typical of band 7 fluency. A 6.5 answer would more likely just say 'Also' or 'And', while a 7.5 answer might integrate the concession even more seamlessly into a single sentence.话语标记'To be fair'传递出说话者正在权衡第二点与第一点的关系,这是7分流利度典型的自然缓和方式。6.5分的回答更可能只是说'Also'或'And',而7.5分的回答可能会把这种让步更无缝地融入一个句子中。
    • LRdrift toward whatever offends the fewest peopleThe collocation 'drift toward' is a step above basic vocabulary like 'choose' or 'pick', showing some range without being a genuinely rare word. A 6.5 candidate would likely just say 'people choose the safest option', while a 7.5 answer might reach for an even more precise or idiomatic phrase.搭配'drift toward'比'choose'或'pick'这类基础词汇高出一个层次,展现出一定的词汇范围,但还不算真正罕见的词。6.5分的考生很可能只会说'people choose the safest option',而7.5分的回答可能会使用更精确或更地道的表达。
    • GRAwhich means power doesn't really disappear, it just becomes less visibleThis clause is attached to the previous idea with 'which', building one moderately complex sentence out of two related thoughts, which goes beyond the short, separate sentences of a 6.5 answer. It stops short of the more compressed apposition or fronted structures a 7.5 response tends to use.这个从句用'which'附加在前一个想法上,把两个相关的想法构建成一个中等复杂度的句子,这超越了6.5分回答中短小、独立的句子。但它还没有达到7.5分回答倾向使用的那种更紧凑的同位语或前置结构。
    7.5 分

The fronted imperative-style clause 'Scale that up to an entire society, and...' and the dash-interrupted opener show the flexible, compressed grammar of a 7.5 answer, reinforced by the less common word 'litigated' used figuratively and the evaluative semicolon closing the response.前置的祈使句式从句'Scale that up to an entire society, and...'以及用破折号打断的开头,展现出7.5分回答灵活、紧凑的语法,而不常见的词'litigated'的比喻性用法,以及结尾评价性的分号,进一步强化了这一点。

Speed, I'd wager, would be the first casualty — my building's residents' group took a full eight months just to settle on a lobby colour, and that was two hundred households weighing in on paint. Scale that up to an entire society, and time-sensitive crises like floods or epidemics would be litigated into irrelevance before anyone acted. There's a subtler quality problem too: collective decisions tend to gravitate toward whatever offends the fewest people, which is rarely the boldest or wisest option. And someone still has to frame the question being voted on, so power never actually vanishes, it simply goes underground. Collective input, in moderation, sharpens decisions; collective decision-making on everything would be outright paralysis.

    • FCThere's a subtler quality problem tooThis phrase signals a second, more nuanced layer of argument being added on top of the first, showing the kind of structured idea-progression that marks strong coherence. A 6.5 answer would flag this shift with a bare 'Also', while this response builds it into the flow of the argument itself.这个短语传递出正在第一层论证之上添加第二层、更细致的论证,展现出标志着强连贯性的那种结构化的想法推进。6.5分的回答会用一个光秃秃的'Also'来标示这种转折,而这个回答则把它融入了论证本身的流动之中。
    • LRlitigated into irrelevanceUsing 'litigated' figuratively to describe endless debate, rather than its literal legal sense, is a genuinely less-common word choice that a 6.5 or 7.0 answer would be unlikely to risk. A lower band would settle for something safer like 'discussed for too long'.用'litigated'来比喻性地描述无休止的争论,而不是它字面上的法律含义,这是一个真正不常见的用词选择,6.5分或7.0分的回答不太可能冒这个险。较低分段会满足于更安全的表达,比如'discussed for too long'。
    • GRAScale that up to an entire society, and time-sensitive crises like floods or epidemics would be litigated into irrelevance before anyone acted. This fronted imperative clause functioning as a conditional is a compressed, flexible structure well beyond the plain if-clause a 6.5 answer would use. It packs a condition and a vivid consequence into one flowing sentence rather than two separate ones.这个起条件从句作用的前置祈使句,是一个紧凑、灵活的结构,远超6.5分回答会用的平实if从句。它把一个条件和一个生动的后果装进了一个流畅的句子中,而不是两个独立的句子。

I think the best people are those who know the teenager well but are not too close, like parents. For me, it was my art teacher in Hue, Ms Phương. My parents wanted me to study medicine, but she noticed I always drew phone designs at lunchtime, and she told me there were degrees for that. Teachers, cousins or coaches can see things clearly because they don't need the teenager to become anything special. Parents are important too, but they often want too much, so they give advice that is not always helpful.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCTeachers, cousins or coaches can see things clearly because they don't need the teenager to become anything special. This sentence adds a generalising point directly after the personal example using the plain connector 'because', with no discourse marker to soften or frame the shift. A band 7 answer would likely introduce this move with something like 'honestly' or 'I'd say', while this response just states it outright.这个句子用平实的连接词'because',紧接在个人例子之后加入了一个概括性的观点,没有用话语标记来软化或框定这个转折。7分的回答很可能会用'honestly'或'I'd say'这样的表达来引出这个转折,而这个回答则直接了当地陈述了出来。
    • LRshe noticed I always drew phone designs at lunchtimeThe vocabulary here ('noticed', 'drew phone designs') is basic and literal. A higher band answer would likely use a more vivid or precise phrase, such as 'sketching interfaces for imaginary phones', instead of the flatter 'drew phone designs'.这里的词汇('noticed'、'drew phone designs')基础而字面化。更高分段的回答很可能会用更生动或更精确的短语,比如'sketching interfaces for imaginary phones',而不是更平淡的'drew phone designs'。
    • GRAMy parents wanted me to study medicine, but she noticed I always drew phone designs at lunchtime, and she told me there were degrees for that. This is a single sentence built from three short clauses joined by 'but' and 'and', which is accurate but repetitive in structure. A band 7.5 answer would likely compress this into one flowing sentence using a participial phrase or a dash, rather than three clauses strung together with basic conjunctions.这是一个由三个用'but'和'and'连接的短从句构成的单句,准确但结构重复。7.5分的回答很可能会用一个分词短语或破折号,把这压缩成一个流畅的句子,而不是用基础连接词把三个从句串在一起。

The opener 'I'd say' and the aside 'honestly rules out most parents' add a layer of spoken reflection beyond a 6.5 answer's flat statements, and one sentence combines a relative clause with a contrast to show more grammatical range.开头的'I'd say'和插入语'honestly rules out most parents',在6.5分回答平铺直叙的陈述之上,增添了一层口语化的反思,而其中一个句子把定语从句和对比结合在一起,展现出更宽的语法范围。

I'd say the best people are the ones who know the teenager well but don't have a personal stake in the decision, which honestly rules out most parents. In my case, it was my art teacher in Hue, Ms Phương, who noticed I spent every lunch break drawing interfaces for imaginary phones while my parents were pushing me toward medicine. Teachers, older cousins or coaches can see a teenager clearly precisely because they're one step removed and don't need them to turn into anything in particular. Parents matter enormously, of course, but they're often too emotionally invested to advise rather than simply steer.

    • FCwhich honestly rules out most parentsThe aside 'honestly' signals the speaker's own evaluation folded into the sentence, a natural spoken habit that shows more fluency than simply stating the fact. A 6.5 answer would likely state this as a separate, plain sentence rather than tucking it into a qualifying clause.插入语'honestly'传递出说话者自己的评价被折叠进了句子里,这是一种自然的口语习惯,比单纯陈述事实展现出更强的流利度。6.5分的回答很可能会把这作为一个独立、平实的句子来陈述,而不是把它塞进一个限定性从句中。
    • LRdon't have a personal stake in the decision'Stake' used in this abstract sense is a moderately less common collocation than simple words like 'interest' or 'involvement'. It shows developing precision without reaching for a genuinely rare word, which is typical of band 7 lexical range.'Stake'在这种抽象意义上的使用,是一个比'interest'或'involvement'这类简单词汇略不常见的搭配。它展现出逐渐发展的精确度,但还没有用上真正罕见的词,这正是7分词汇范围的典型特征。
    • GRAwho noticed I spent every lunch break drawing interfaces for imaginary phones while my parents were pushing me toward medicineThis relative clause combined with a contrastive 'while' clause packs two ideas into one sentence, showing more complex sentence-building than the short, separate sentences of a 6.5 response. It is not yet as compressed as the dash- or participle-based structures a 7.5 answer would use.这个定语从句和一个对比性的'while'从句结合起来,把两个想法装进一个句子里,展现出比6.5分回答中简短、独立的句子更复杂的句子构建能力。但还没有达到7.5分回答会用的那种基于破折号或分词结构的紧凑程度。
    7.5 分

The dash-interrupted description 'who quietly clocked that...' and the evaluative closing line about advising versus steering give this answer the compact grammar and reflective finish typical of band 7.5, alongside the less common verb 'clocked' used informally.用破折号打断的描述'who quietly clocked that...'以及关于'建议'与'操控'之别的评价性结尾句,让这个回答具有7.5分典型的紧凑语法和反思性收尾,再加上不常见的、非正式用法的动词'clocked'。

Someone who knows the teenager well yet has no real stake in the outcome tends to give the clearest advice, which usually rules out parents and best friends by default. Mine was an art teacher in Hue, Ms Phương, who quietly clocked that I spent every lunch break sketching interfaces for imaginary phones while my parents were busy steering me toward medicine. People one step removed — teachers, older cousins, coaches — can see a teenager for who they actually are, without needing them to become anything in particular. Parents matter enormously, naturally, but being so invested often tips them from advising into steering, which is a subtly different thing.

    • FCParents matter enormously, naturally, but being so invested often tips them from advising into steering, which is a subtly different thing. This closing sentence draws a fine evaluative distinction between two related ideas, showing the kind of nuanced, well-managed conclusion typical of the highest bands. A 6.5 or 7.0 answer would more likely end on a flatter statement like 'parents are too invested to help'.这个结尾句在两个相关的想法之间划出了一条精细的评价性界限,展现出最高分段典型的那种细致、驾驭得当的结论。6.5分或7.0分的回答更可能以一个更平淡的陈述收尾,比如'parents are too invested to help'。
    • LRquietly clocked that I spent every lunch break sketching interfaces'Clocked' is a genuinely less common, informal word choice for 'noticed', giving the answer a natural idiomatic flavour that lower bands tend to avoid in favour of safer vocabulary. It also pairs unusually well with 'quietly', adding to the vivid, specific tone.'Clocked'是'noticed'一个真正不常见、非正式的用词选择,给回答增添了一种自然、地道的风味,而较低分段往往会避开这种词,选择更安全的词汇。它和'quietly'搭配得异常好,进一步增强了生动、具体的语气。
    • GRAPeople one step removed — teachers, older cousins, coaches — can see a teenager for who they actually are, without needing them to become anything in particular. The dash-set list functions as an appositive aside inside the main clause, a compact structure a 6.5 or 7.0 answer would be unlikely to attempt. It lets the speaker add examples without breaking the sentence into separate pieces.用破折号划出的列表在主句内起到了同位语插入语的作用,这是一个6.5分或7.0分回答不太可能尝试的紧凑结构。它让说话者能够添加例子,而不用把句子拆成几个独立的部分。
  3. 3. What key decisions will societies face in a global world?

    6.5 分

Plain, separate sentences connected by 'but' and 'so' present one clear opinion (openness) with a concrete local example (Da Nang hotels) and a simple list of further points, all in common vocabulary.平实、独立的句子用'but'和'so'连接,呈现出一个清晰的观点(开放程度),配上一个具体的本地例子(岘港的酒店),以及一个简单的补充观点列表,全都使用常见词汇。

I think the main decision is how open a country should be to money, people and ideas from outside. In Da Nang, foreign hotels have brought more jobs and made the city nicer, but prices went up and now local people cannot always use the beaches. So societies will need to decide how much of this they want. Climate change is another big decision, because no country can fix it alone. Technology is also important, because global companies now decide how people communicate. These are not easy questions, so many countries will probably try to avoid deciding.

    • FCSo societies will need to decide how much of this they want. The plain connector 'So' bluntly signals a conclusion drawn from the previous sentence, which is functional but basic. A band 7 answer would more likely soften this transition with a phrase like 'so societies will have to work out', adding a touch of reflection rather than a flat statement.平实的连接词'So'直白地标示出从前一句得出的结论,功能上没问题,但很基础。7分的回答更可能会用'so societies will have to work out'这样的短语来软化这个过渡,加入一丝反思,而不是平铺直叙的陈述。
    • LRbrought more jobs and made the city nicer'Made the city nicer' is a simple, everyday phrase where a higher band would likely reach for something more specific or evaluative, such as a less common word for the trade-off, like 'bargain' or 'cost'. The vocabulary here is accurate but plain.'Made the city nicer'是一个简单的日常短语,而更高分段很可能会用更具体或更具评价性的表达,比如用'bargain'或'cost'这类不常见的词来形容这种权衡取舍。这里的词汇准确,但平实。
    • GRAIn Da Nang, foreign hotels have brought more jobs and made the city nicer, but prices went up and now local people cannot always use the beaches. This sentence strings four short ideas together with 'and' and 'but', a grammatically correct but repetitive pattern. A 7.5 answer would likely compress this into a single sentence built around a relative clause introduced by 'where'.这个句子用'and'和'but'把四个简短的想法串联在一起,语法正确,但模式重复。7.5分的回答很可能会把它压缩成一个以'where'引导的定语从句为核心构建的单句。
    7.0 分

The opener 'Honestly, I think' and the closing aside 'to be honest' frame this as natural spoken reflection, and the sentence about the Da Nang coastline links a relative clause to two contrasting outcomes, showing more range than the short sentences of a 6.5 answer.开头的'Honestly, I think'和结尾的插入语'to be honest',把这个回答框定为自然的口语式反思,而关于岘港海岸线的句子把一个定语从句和两个对比性的结果连接了起来,展现出比6.5分回答中简短句子更宽的范围。

Honestly, I think the biggest one is how open to be — to money, people and ideas — and at what cost. You can actually watch this happen along the Da Nang coastline, where foreign hotel investment has brought jobs and a nicer city, but also higher prices and beaches that locals increasingly can't use. So societies will have to work out how much of that trade-off they're willing to accept. Closely tied to it are climate decisions, since no single country can solve those alone, and questions about technology, like whether to let global platforms set the rules for communication. None of these have a clean answer, to be honest.

    • FCNone of these have a clean answer, to be honest.Ending on the spoken tag 'to be honest' softens the claim and signals the speaker's own stance, which is a natural discourse habit associated with band 7. A 6.5 answer would more likely just state 'These are not easy questions' without the reflective tag.以口语化的尾句'to be honest'结尾,软化了论断,并传递出说话者自己的立场,这是与7分相关的一种自然话语习惯。6.5分的回答更可能只是陈述'These are not easy questions',而不带这个反思性的尾句。
    • LRhow much of that trade-off they're willing to accept'Trade-off' is a moderately less common word than 'this' or 'the cost', showing developing precision in describing an abstract exchange. It sits between the plain vocabulary of a 6.5 answer and a more idiomatic phrase a 7.5 response might choose, like 'bargain'.'Trade-off'是一个比'this'或'the cost'稍不常见的词,展现出描述抽象交换关系时逐渐发展的精确度。它介于6.5分回答平实的词汇,和7.5分回答可能选择的更地道短语(比如'bargain')之间。
    • GRAwhere foreign hotel investment has brought jobs and a nicer city, but also higher prices and beaches that locals increasingly can't useThis relative clause beginning with 'where' packs two contrasting outcomes into a single flowing sentence, which is more complex than the short separate sentences of a 6.5 response. It stops short of the further compression, like dropping connecting words entirely, that a 7.5 answer tends to use.这个以'where'开头的定语从句把两个对比性的结果装进了一个流畅的句子里,这比6.5分回答中简短、独立的句子更复杂。但它还没有达到7.5分回答倾向使用的那种更进一步的压缩,比如完全省略连接词。

The big one, I'd argue, is how open to be — to money, to people, to ideas — and at what cost, and you can watch that trade-off play out in real time along the Da Nang coastline, where foreign hotel investment has brought jobs and a smarter-looking city alongside rising prices and beaches locals can no longer really claim as their own. Societies will have to decide how much of that bargain they're prepared to accept. Bound up with it are climate decisions, since no country can solve those in isolation, and questions of technology — whether global platforms get to set the rules for how people communicate. None of these come with a tidy answer, and the temptation will always be to dodge the decision altogether.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCand the temptation will always be to dodge the decision altogetherThis closing clause adds a final evaluative twist that ties the whole answer together, going beyond simply restating the difficulty. A 6.5 or 7.0 answer would be more likely to end flatly on 'these are not easy questions' rather than layering in this extra observation.这个结尾从句加上了一个最终的评价性转折,把整个回答串联在一起,超越了单纯重申困难所在。6.5分或7.0分的回答更可能平淡地以'these are not easy questions'收尾,而不会叠加这个额外的观察。
    • LRbeaches locals can no longer really claim as their own'Claim as their own' is a more idiomatic, figurative way of describing lost access than the plain 'use' a lower band would choose. It adds a slightly literary, precise flavour that marks genuinely wide lexical resource.'Claim as their own'是一种比低分段会选择的平实'use'更地道、更具比喻性的方式,来描述失去的使用权。它增添了一丝略带文学性、精确的风味,标志着真正广泛的词汇资源。
    • GRAwhere foreign hotel investment has brought jobs and a smarter-looking city alongside rising prices and beaches locals can no longer really claim as their ownThis relative clause compresses two contrasting outcomes into one continuous structure using 'alongside' instead of a repeated conjunction, avoiding the choppier 'but... and...' pattern of lower bands. It shows the flexible, economical grammar expected at 7.5.这个定语从句用'alongside'而不是重复的连接词,把两个对比性的结果压缩进一个连贯的结构中,避免了低分段那种断断续续的'but... and...'模式。它展现出7.5分所要求的灵活、精炼的语法。

This answer uses short declarative sentences and the simple connector 'so' to link the example directly to its cause, giving one plain reason (fit) and one plain consequence (responsibility) without any spoken hedging.这个回答用简短的陈述句和简单的连接词'so',把例子和它的原因直接联系起来,给出了一个平实的理由(契合度)和一个平实的后果(责任感),没有任何口语化的缓和语气。

The main benefit is that decisions fit the place better. In the lane behind my parents' house in Hue, residents were asked where to put new street lights and speed bumps, and they chose spots the city planners would never have picked, like the dark corner where motorbikes cut through. It worked well because the people who use the street every day designed it. It also makes people feel more responsible, so they do not damage things they helped to choose. The only problem is that it takes more time, but for small local matters, that is okay.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCIt also makes people feel more responsible, so they do not damage things they helped to choose. The idea is added with the bare word 'also' and linked to its result with 'so', a functional but basic way of sequencing points. A band 7 answer would more likely fold this into the flow with a phrase like 'Involvement also builds a sense of ownership, since...' rather than starting a fresh short sentence.这个想法是用光秃秃的词'also'添加进去的,并用'so'和其结果连接起来,这是一种功能性但基础的观点排列方式。7分的回答更可能会用'Involvement also builds a sense of ownership, since...'这样的短语,把它融入行文之中,而不是重新起一个简短的句子。
    • LRdecisions fit the place better'Fit the place better' is simple, everyday phrasing. A higher band would likely choose a more precise or idiomatic way to express the same idea, such as 'genuinely fitting the place' or a less common word like 'breeds ownership' used elsewhere.'Fit the place better'是简单的日常措辞。更高分段很可能会选择更精确或更地道的方式来表达同样的想法,比如'genuinely fitting the place',或者像别处用到的'breeds ownership'这样不常见的词。

A 7.5 answer would likely use a dash to set off the examples as an appositive list instead of tacking them on with 'like'.这是一个长句,但它是通过用'and'和'like'简单串联从句构建而成的,而不是通过更灵活的从属结构。7.5分的回答很可能会用破折号把例子作为同位语列表划出来,而不是用'like'把它们附加上去。

The result works precisely because the people who use it every day designed it. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCIt's slower, to be fair, but for local matters that seems like a fair trade. The aside 'to be fair' signals the speaker weighing a downside against the benefits just listed, which is a natural way native-like speakers manage concession in speech. A 6.5 answer would more likely state this as a flat, separate sentence: 'The only problem is that it takes more time'.插入语'to be fair'传递出说话者正在权衡一个不利之处与刚刚列出的那些好处,这是接近母语者在口语中处理让步时的自然方式。6.5分的回答更可能会把这作为一个平淡、独立的句子来陈述:'The only problem is that it takes more time'。
    • LRbuilds a sense of ownership'Builds a sense of ownership' is a moderately less common collocation than simpler phrasing like 'makes people feel responsible'. It works precisely because the people using it daily designed it. Involvement also breeds ownership, since nobody vandalises something they fought to have included, and it teaches communities that institutions are actually listening, which makes them far more willing to cooperate next time round. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCwhich makes them far more willing to cooperate next time roundThis trailing clause extends the previous point with a further consequence, showing the kind of layered, cause-and-effect reasoning that marks strong coherence at the top band. A 6.5 or 7.0 answer would be more likely to stop the sentence earlier rather than adding this extra step.这个尾随从句用一个进一步的后果延伸了前面的观点,展现出标志着最高分段强连贯性的那种有层次的因果推理。6.5分或7.0分的回答更可能提前结束这个句子,而不会加上这一额外的一步。

I think advertising has more influence than most people admit, especially on small everyday decisions. I used to think I ignored ads completely, but then I noticed I had bought the exact coffee brand that kept appearing in the Grab app. Advertising does not really change what we want, but it changes which brand we choose. For big decisions, like buying a house or choosing a job, advertising has less effect because people research more and ask other people. But small choices happen quickly, without much thinking, so advertising works well on them.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCBut small choices happen quickly, without much thinking, so advertising works well on them. This final point is added as a short, separate sentence linked with the plain connectors 'but' and 'so', clearly stating the conclusion. A band 7 answer would more likely weave this into the same sentence as the earlier contrast using a comma, showing smoother idea progression.这个最后的观点作为一个用平实连接词'but'和'so'连接的独立短句加了进来,清晰地陈述了结论。7分的回答更可能会用逗号把它编织进和前面对比同一个句子里,展现出更流畅的想法推进。

A higher band would likely use a more abstract or precise phrase here, such as 'which version of it we reach for', to describe the same idea with more nuance.这是平实、直接的词汇。更高分段很可能会在这里用更抽象或更精确的短语,比如'which version of it we reach for',以更细腻地描述同样的想法。

A 7.5 answer would likely use a more dramatic construction, such as 'right up until I caught myself...', to build tension into the same idea.这个句子用一个直白的过去时叙述,以'but then'连接,准确但是一种常见、低风险的结构。7.5分的回答很可能会用更具戏剧性的结构,比如'right up until I caught myself...',给同样的想法注入张力。

Honestly, I think it goes further than most of us would like to admit, mainly on the small decisions we make without really thinking. I'd have said I ignore ads completely, and then I noticed I'd bought the exact coffee brand that had been following me around the Grab app for a week. Advertising rarely changes what we want; it just changes which version of it we reach for. On bigger decisions, like a house or a career, its influence is weaker, since people tend to research and talk to others first, but everyday choices are made on a kind of autopilot, which advertising is very good at programming.

    • FCI'd have said I ignore ads completely, and then I noticedThis phrase sets up a small narrative twist, admitting a previous wrong assumption before correcting it, which shows the kind of self-aware, natural storytelling typical of band 7. A 6.5 answer would more likely state this more flatly as 'I used to think I ignored ads completely, but then'.这个短语为一个小小的叙事转折做了铺垫,先承认之前一个错误的假设,再加以纠正,展现出7分典型的那种自我觉察、自然的讲故事方式。6.5分的回答更可能会更平淡地陈述为'I used to think I ignored ads completely, but then'。
    • LRwhich advertising is very good at programmingUsing 'programming' figuratively to describe how advertising shapes automatic behaviour is a moderately less common word choice than simpler alternatives like 'influencing' or 'affecting'. It shows some lexical range without being a rare or idiomatic phrase.用'programming'来比喻性地描述广告如何塑造自动化行为,是一个比'influencing'或'affecting'这类更简单的替代词稍不常见的用词选择。它展现出一定的词汇范围,但还不是一个罕见或地道的短语。
    • GRAAdvertising rarely changes what we want; it just changes which version of it we reach for.The semicolon joins two closely related but contrasting ideas into one balanced sentence, which is more sophisticated than simply separating them with a full stop as a 6.5 answer would. It is not yet as compressed as the dash-based or fronted structures a 7.5 answer tends to use.分号把两个关系紧密但形成对比的想法连接成一个均衡的句子,这比6.5分回答用句号把它们分开更为老练。但它还没有达到7.5分回答倾向使用的那种基于破折号或前置结构的紧凑程度。

The vivid phrase 'trailing me around the Grab app' and the closing admission give this answer a precise, self-aware finish, while the semicolon sentence shows compact, balanced grammar.生动的短语'trailing me around the Grab app'以及结尾的坦承,让这个回答有了精确、自我觉察的收尾,而用分号连接的句子展现出紧凑、均衡的语法。

Further than most of us would like to admit, I'd say, mainly on the small decisions made without a second thought. I'd have sworn I ignore ads completely, right up until I caught myself buying the exact coffee brand that had been trailing me around the Grab app for a week. Advertising rarely reshapes what we want; it just quietly decides which version of it we reach for. Its grip loosens on bigger decisions — a house, a career — because people actually research those and talk to others, but everyday choices run on autopilot, and advertising is remarkably good at programming autopilot. Being aware of that helps a little, though admittedly not as much as I'd like.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCthough admittedly not as much as I'd likeThis trailing qualification softens the previous claim with a note of self-critical honesty, adding a layer of nuance to the closing statement. A 6.5 or 7.0 answer would more likely end the point flatly without this extra reflective turn.这个尾随的限定语用一丝自我批评式的坦诚,软化了前面的论断,给结尾的陈述增添了一层细腻感。6.5分或7.0分的回答更可能平淡地结束这个观点,而没有这个额外的反思性转折。
    • LRhad been trailing me around the Grab app'Trailing' is a genuinely less common, almost predatory word choice for describing a persistent ad, more vivid than the plainer 'following' a lower band would use. It adds a slightly idiomatic, image-rich quality to the sentence.'Trailing'是一个真正不常见、近乎带有捕猎意味的用词,用来形容一个纠缠不休的广告,比低分段会用的更平实的'following'更生动。它给句子增添了一丝略带地道、富有画面感的特质。
    • GRAAdvertising rarely reshapes what we want; it just quietly decides which version of it we reach for.The semicolon links two tightly related but contrasting clauses into one compact, balanced sentence, a flexible structure that avoids the repetition of a subject across two separate sentences. Short sentences joined with 'but' and 'so' give a direct opinion, one personal example, and one simple takeaway, using plain, common vocabulary throughout.简短的句子用'but'和'so'连接,给出了一个直接的观点、一个个人例子,以及一个简单的收获,全程使用平实、常见的词汇。

Yes, but I think the real problem is not the amount of information, it is that a lot of it is trying to sell you something. I spent three evenings reading reviews before buying a new monitor for work, and the hard part was not reading, it was finding out which reviews were honest. Too much information usually makes decisions slower, but it does not really make them better after a certain point. People who are good at deciding often set a limit first, like reading only two sources in one evening. So the internet makes decisions harder mainly for people who think more research is always better.

    • FCSo the internet makes decisions harder mainly for people who think more research is always better. The conclusion is signalled with the plain connector 'So', stated as a fresh, separate sentence. A band 7 answer would more likely end on a slightly softened version of the same idea using a tag like 'to be fair', showing more natural spoken concession.结论用平实的连接词'So'来标示,作为一个全新的独立句子陈述出来。7分的回答更可能会用'to be fair'这样的尾句,为同样的想法加上一点软化,展现出更自然的口语式让步。
    • LRthe hard part was not reading, it was finding out which reviews were honestThe vocabulary here is direct and simple. A higher band answer would likely phrase the same contrast more precisely, for instance 'what actually took the time... was working out which reviews were honest', showing more careful word choice.这里的词汇直接而简单。更高分段的回答很可能会更精确地表达同样的对比,例如'what actually took the time... was working out which reviews were honest',展现出更精心的用词选择。
    • GRAI spent three evenings reading reviews before buying a new monitor for work, and the hard part was not reading, it was finding out which reviews were honest. This sentence joins two ideas with 'and', followed by a simple contrast built from two short clauses. A 7.5 answer would likely compress the contrast using 'but' plus a fronted phrase, such as 'what ate the time wasn't X but Y', for a tighter structure.这个句子用'and'连接两个想法,后面跟着一个由两个短从句构成的简单对比。7.5分的回答很可能会用'but'加一个前置短语来压缩这个对比,比如'what ate the time wasn't X but Y',形成更紧凑的结构。

The spoken opener 'Yes, but honestly I'd say' and the closing tag 'which, to be fair, is most of us' frame this as natural reflective speech, while the sentence about deciding well links three short steps with commas, showing more range than a 6.5 answer's plain sentences.口语化的开头'Yes, but honestly I'd say'和结尾的尾句'which, to be fair, is most of us',把这个回答框定为自然的反思性言语,而关于'擅长决策'的那个句子用逗号连接了三个简短的步骤,展现出比6.5分回答中平实句子更宽的范围。

Yes, but honestly I'd say the problem isn't really the amount, it's that most of it is trying to sell you something. I spent three evenings reading monitor reviews before buying one for design work, and what actually took the time wasn't the reading, it was working out which reviews were honest. Too much information mainly delays decisions rather than improving them past a certain point. The people I know who decide well tend to set a limit in advance, like two sources and one evening, then just choose. So the internet only makes decisions harder for people who treat more research as automatically better, which, to be fair, is most of us.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCwhich, to be fair, is most of usThis trailing tag softens the final claim by including the speaker in the criticism, a natural concessive habit typical of band 7 fluency. A 6.5 answer would more likely leave this out and end on a flatter, more absolute statement.这个尾随的标签,通过把说话者也纳入批评之中,软化了最后的论断,这是7分流利度典型的一种自然的让步习惯。6.5分的回答更可能会省略这一点,以一个更平淡、更绝对的陈述结尾。
    • LRworking out which reviews were honest'Working out' is a natural, moderately idiomatic phrasal verb rather than the more basic 'finding out' a 6.5 answer might use. It shows developing range without being a genuinely rare or literary word choice.'Working out'是一个自然、中等地道的短语动词,而不是6.5分回答可能会用的更基础的'finding out'。它展现出逐渐发展的范围,但还不算真正罕见或文学性的用词选择。
    • GRAThe people I know who decide well tend to set a limit in advance, like two sources and one evening, then just choose. This sentence embeds a relative clause and a listed example inside one flowing structure, going beyond the short separate sentences of a 6.5 response. It falls short of the dash-set apposition a 7.5 answer would likely use for the same list.这个句子在一个流畅的结构中嵌入了一个定语从句和一个列举的例子,超越了6.5分回答中简短、独立的句子。但它还没有达到7.5分回答可能会用的那种破折号同位语列表。

Yes, though I'd argue the problem isn't the sheer amount, it's that most of it is trying to sell you something. I spent three evenings comparing monitor reviews before buying one for design work, and what ate the time wasn't the reading itself but working out which reviews were actually honest. Beyond a certain point, too much information mainly delays a decision rather than improving it. The people I know who decide well tend to set a limit in advance — two sources, one evening, then choose — rather than chasing certainty that never quite arrives. So the internet only makes decisions harder for those who treat more research as inherently better, which, to be fair, describes most of us.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCrather than chasing certainty that never quite arrivesThis trailing clause adds a reflective, almost philosophical observation on top of the practical point just made, which is the kind of evaluative extension typical of the top band. A 6.5 or 7.0 answer would be more likely to stop the sentence without this extra layer of comment.这个尾随从句在刚刚提出的实用观点之上,增添了一种反思性的、近乎哲理性的观察,这是最高分段典型的评价性延伸。6.5分或7.0分的回答更可能不加这一层额外的评论就结束句子。

It gives the sentence a slightly idiomatic, conversational edge.用'ate'来比喻性地描述时间被消耗,是一个真正不常见、生动的用词选择,相比之下低分段会用更可预测的'took'。它给句子增添了一丝略带地道、口语化的锋芒。

This answer relies on plain connectors like 'because' and 'so' to link the personal example to a general claim, using everyday vocabulary such as 'very strong influence' and 'big decisions'.这个回答依赖'because'和'so'这类平实的连接词,把个人例子和一个概括性的论断联系起来,使用了'very strong influence'和'big decisions'这样的日常词汇。

I think other young people have a very strong influence, especially on things other people can see. My cousin Nam is sixteen, and he stopped playing football, which he was good at, because his friends started skateboarding instead, and within a month he had changed completely. At that age, belonging to a group feels very important, so friends influence clothes, music, hobbies, and sometimes riskier things more than parents do. Parents are still more important for big decisions like university, because friends usually do not know much more than the teenager does. I think parents should try to make sure their child has good friends, instead of fighting against their influence.

    • FCAt that age, belonging to a group feels very important, so friends influence clothes, music, hobbies, and sometimes riskier things more than parents do.The link between the observation and the list of examples is made with the plain connector 'so', stated directly. A band 7 answer would likely phrase the cause more idiomatically, such as 'belonging feels almost like survival', before drawing the same conclusion.观察和例子列表之间的联系,用平实的连接词'so'直接陈述出来。7分的回答很可能会用更地道的方式来表达这个原因,比如'belonging feels almost like survival',然后再得出同样的结论。
    • LRhe had changed completelyThis is very general, everyday phrasing. A higher band answer would likely describe the same change more vividly and specifically, for instance saying an identity 'reshuffled' or 'shifted along with' the friend group, rather than the vague 'changed completely'.这是非常笼统的日常措辞。更高分段的回答很可能会更生动、更具体地描述同样的变化,例如说一个人的身份'重新洗牌'了,或者'随着'朋友群体而'转变',而不是用模糊的'changed completely'。
    • GRAMy cousin Nam is sixteen, and he stopped playing football, which he was good at, because his friends started skateboarding instead, and within a month he had changed completely. This long sentence strings four clauses together using 'and' and 'because' repeatedly, which is accurate but repetitive. A 7.5 answer would likely use an apposition, such as 'sixteen and genuinely talented at football', to compress some of this information instead of adding another full clause.这个长句反复用'and'和'because'把四个从句串在一起,准确但重复。7.5分的回答很可能会用同位语,比如'sixteen and genuinely talented at football',来压缩其中一些信息,而不是再加一个完整的从句。

Honestly, I'd say it's enormous, especially on anything visible. My cousin Nam, who's sixteen, gave up football — a sport he was genuinely good at — because his group of friends got into skateboarding, and within a month his whole identity had shifted along with them. At that age, belonging feels almost like survival, so peer influence tends to beat parental influence on clothes, music, hobbies and, worryingly, riskier things too. Where parents still win out is on longer-term decisions like university, mostly because friends have no more idea than the teenager does. I think the healthiest thing adults can do is make sure the peer group is a good one, rather than trying to fight its influence directly.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCWhere parents still win out is on longer-term decisions like universityThis fronted structure signals a shift to the counter-point in a slightly more sophisticated way than simply starting a new sentence with 'But'. A 6.5 answer would more likely just say 'Parents are still more important for big decisions like university' as a plain, separate statement.这个前置结构以一种比简单用'But'开始新句子稍微老练一点的方式,传递出向反面观点的转折。6.5分的回答更可能只是说'Parents are still more important for big decisions like university'这样一句平实、独立的陈述。
    • LRbelonging feels almost like survivalThis is a moderately vivid, figurative comparison rather than plain description, showing some lexical reach beyond basic vocabulary. It's less startling than a genuinely rare word but goes further than the flat 'belonging to a group feels very important' a 6.5 answer uses.这是一个中等生动、比喻性的比较,而不是平实的描述,展现出超越基础词汇的一定的词汇触及范围。它不如一个真正罕见的词那样引人注目,但比6.5分回答用的那种平淡的'belonging to a group feels very important'更进一步。
    • GRAMy cousin Nam, who's sixteen, gave up football — a sport he was genuinely good at — because his group of friends got into skateboarding, and within a month his whole identity had shifted along with them. The dash-set aside inserts extra information about the football skill without starting a new clause, showing more flexible sentence-building than a 6.5 answer's chain of clauses. It stops short of folding the biographical detail directly into an apposition the way a 7.5 answer does.用破折号划出的插入语,在不开启新从句的情况下,插入了关于足球技能的额外信息,展现出比6.5分回答从句链更灵活的句子构建能力。但它还没有像7.5分回答那样,把传记性细节直接融入一个同位语中。

The compact apposition 'sixteen and genuinely talented at football' and the vivid participial phrase 'his whole identity reshuffling itself' replace a full extra clause with compressed grammar, while 'eclipse' and 'hold sway' offer genuinely less common vocabulary for influence.紧凑的同位语'sixteen and genuinely talented at football'和生动的分词短语'his whole identity reshuffling itself',用紧凑的语法取代了一整个额外的从句,而'eclipse'和'hold sway'则为'影响力'这一概念提供了真正不常见的词汇。

Enormous, I'd say, especially on anything visible. My cousin Nam, sixteen and genuinely talented at football, dropped the sport within a month of his friend group discovering skateboarding, his whole identity reshuffling itself to match theirs almost overnight. At that age, belonging feels like survival, so peer influence tends to eclipse parental influence on clothes, music, hobbies and, worryingly, riskier behaviour too. Where parents still hold sway is on long-horizon decisions like university, largely because friends know no more about that than the teenager does. 为什么是这个分数

    • FCThe healthiest move adults can make, I think, is curating a good peer group rather than fighting its pull head-on.This closing sentence delivers a considered, generalised recommendation with the aside 'I think' folded naturally into the middle of the clause rather than tacked onto the front. A 6.5 or 7.0 answer would more likely place 'I think' at the very start as a simple, separate opener.这个结尾句给出了一个经过深思熟虑的、概括性的建议,插入语'I think'被自然地融入从句中间,而不是附加在前面。6.5分或7.0分的回答更可能把'I think'放在最开头,作为一个简单、独立的开场白。
    • LRpeer influence tends to eclipse parental influence'Eclipse' is a genuinely less common, vivid word for describing one influence overtaking another, well beyond the plain 'beat' or 'is stronger than' that a lower band would default to. It's a precise, slightly literary choice that fits the abstract comparison being made.'Eclipse'是一个真正不常见、生动的词,用来描述一种影响力盖过另一种,远超低分段默认会用的平实的'beat'或'is stronger than'。这是一个精确、略带文学性的选择,契合所做出的这种抽象比较。
    • GRAhis whole identity reshuffling itself to match theirs almost overnightThis participial phrase attaches directly to the previous clause without a connecting word, compressing what a lower band would likely express as a separate sentence with 'and'. This answer lists points with the plain connectors 'but' and 'or' and states each idea as its own short sentence, using everyday vocabulary such as 'hardest one' and 'take a loan'.这个回答用平实的连接词'but'和'or'列出各点,把每个想法都陈述为独立的短句,使用了'hardest one'和'take a loan'这样的日常词汇。

The classic decisions are still there, like what to study, which job to choose, and whether to stay or move away. But I think the hardest one now is about location. Some of my friends are deciding whether to work abroad, in Japan or Australia, or stay in Vietnam near their family, and our parents did not usually have this choice. Young people also have to decide things earlier now, like what to share online, because it stays there forever, or whether to take a loan for education. There is also a quieter decision about what kind of adult to become, which used to be decided by the community but is now left to each person.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCBut I think the hardest one now is about location. This shift to the main point is made with the basic connector 'But' at the start of a fresh, short sentence. A band 7 answer would more likely weave the same shift into a longer sentence with a marker like 'honestly, I think', showing smoother idea progression.向主要观点的这个转折,是用基础连接词'But'放在一个全新短句的开头来实现的。7分的回答更可能会用'honestly, I think'这样的标记,把同样的转折编织进一个更长的句子里,展现出更流畅的想法推进。
    • LRbecause it stays there foreverThis is simple, literal phrasing. A higher band answer would likely use a more precise or slightly abstract word here, such as 'permanent', instead of the plainer 'stays there forever'.这是简单、字面化的措辞。更高分段的回答很可能会在这里用一个更精确或略带抽象的词,比如'permanent',而不是更平淡的'stays there forever'。
    • GRASome of my friends are deciding whether to work abroad, in Japan or Australia, or stay in Vietnam near their family, and our parents did not usually have this choice. This sentence joins the example and the contrast with 'and', a straightforward additive structure. A 7.5 answer would likely turn the second half into an appositive noun phrase instead, avoiding the extra 'and' clause.这个句子用'and'把例子和对比连接起来,是一种直白的加合结构。7.5分的回答很可能会把后半部分变成一个同位语名词短语,从而避免多加一个'and'从句。

The classic ones are still around — what to study, which career, whether to stay or move — but honestly, I think the geography question has become the hardest. Several of my friends are currently deciding whether to work abroad, in Japan or Australia, or stay in Vietnam near family, which is a decision our parents' generation mostly never had to make. On top of that, young people now have to decide things earlier, like what to share online, which becomes permanent, or whether to take on debt for education. And there's the quieter decision of what kind of adult to be, which used to be answered by the community and is now left up to each person.

    • FCOn top of that, young people now have to decide things earlierThis phrase signals the addition of a new category of point in a more natural, spoken way than a bare 'Also' or 'And'. A 6.5 answer would more likely just start the next sentence with 'Young people also have to decide things earlier now'.这个短语以一种比光秃秃的'Also'或'And'更自然、更口语化的方式,传递出增加了一个新类别的观点。6.5分的回答更可能只是用'Young people also have to decide things earlier now'来开始下一句。
    • LRour parents' generation mostly never had to makeReferring to 'our parents' generation' rather than simply 'our parents' shows a slightly more precise, sociological way of framing the comparison. It is a modest step up in register from the plainer phrasing a 6.5 answer tends to use.用'our parents' generation'而不是简单的'our parents',展现出一种略微更精确、更社会学化的方式来框定这个比较。这比6.5分回答倾向使用的更平实的措辞,在语域上有适度的提升。
    • GRAwhich is a decision our parents' generation mostly never had to makeThis relative clause attaches an evaluative comment directly onto the previous statement without starting a new sentence, showing more complex sentence-building than the short, separate sentences of a 6.5 response. It is not yet as compressed as the appositive noun phrase a 7.5 answer would use for the same idea.这个定语从句直接把一句评价性评论附加在前面的陈述上,而不用开始一个新句子,展现出比6.5分回答中简短、独立的句子更复杂的句子构建能力。但它还没有达到7.5分回答对同一想法会使用的同位语名词短语那样紧凑。
    7.5 分

The appositive phrase 'a choice our parents' generation mostly never had to face' replaces a full relative clause with compressed grammar, and the closing balanced phrase gives the answer a precise, evaluative finish.同位语短语'a choice our parents' generation mostly never had to face',用紧凑的语法取代了一整个定语从句,而结尾均衡的措辞让这个回答有了精确、评价性的收尾。

The classic decisions are still there — what to study, which career, whether to stay or move — but the geography question, I'd argue, has become the hardest one of all. Several of my friends are currently weighing up working abroad, in Japan or Australia, against staying in Vietnam near family, a choice our parents' generation mostly never had to face. Alongside that, young people now settle things earlier than they used to: what to share online, which becomes essentially permanent, and whether to take on debt for an education. And then there's the quieter question of what kind of adult to become, once answered by the community and now left entirely to the individual, which is freeing and exhausting in roughly equal measure.

    • FCwhich is freeing and exhausting in roughly equal measureThis closing phrase draws two contrasting emotional consequences together into one balanced judgement, rounding off the whole answer with a reflective observation. A 6.5 or 7.0 answer would be more likely to end the point on a single, simpler emotional word rather than this paired contrast.这个结尾短语把两种形成对比的情感后果汇聚成一个均衡的判断,以一个反思性的观察为整个回答收尾。6.5分或7.0分的回答更可能用一个单一、更简单的情感词汇来结束这个观点,而不是这种成对的对比。
    • LRyoung people now settle things earlier than they used to'Settle things' is a moderately idiomatic way of saying 'decide things', giving the sentence a slightly more natural, native-like rhythm than the plainer phrasing a lower band would use. It reads as more compact and less literal.'Settle things'是'decide things'一种中等地道的说法,让句子比低分段会用的更平实的措辞多了一点自然、接近母语者的节奏感。读起来更紧凑,也不那么字面化。
    • GRAa choice our parents' generation mostly never had to faceThis appositive noun phrase attaches directly to the previous clause without any connecting word, compressing information a lower band would likely express as a separate 'and' clause or relative clause. This kind of noun-phrase apposition is characteristic of the flexible, economical grammar expected at 7.5.这个同位语名词短语直接附加在前面的从句上,不用任何连接词,压缩了低分段很可能会用独立的'and'从句或定语从句来表达的信息。这种名词短语同位语,是7.5分所要求的灵活、精炼语法的特征。

Short sentences linked with 'but' and 'so' state a direct opinion, a personal example (Vy), and a simple rule about matching decisions to age, using plain vocabulary like 'strange' and 'big decisions'.用'but'和'so'连接的短句,陈述了一个直接的观点、一个个人例子(小薇),以及一条关于'决定要匹配年龄'的简单规则,使用了'strange'和'big decisions'这样的平实词汇。

Yes, but the decisions need to match the child's age. My sister Vy started choosing her own clothes at four years old, and the outfits were often strange, but I think that is why she is so confident now, because she was trusted to decide something every day. Children who never get to choose anything will have to make big decisions at eighteen with no practice. So the decisions should be small, like what to wear, which book to read, or how to spend pocket money. But letting a six-year-old decide whether to go to school is not respect, it is just not doing your job as a parent. Still, some real choice every day is necessary.

    • FCSo the decisions should be small, like what to wear, which book to read, or how to spend pocket money. The rule is introduced with the plain connector 'So' as a fresh, separate sentence listing examples with 'like'. A band 7 answer would more likely fold this into ongoing reflection with a phrase such as 'The trick is keeping the stakes low', showing a smoother, less mechanical transition.这条规则是用平实的连接词'So'作为一个全新、独立的句子引入的,用'like'列举例子。7分的回答更可能会用'The trick is keeping the stakes low'这样的短语,把它融入持续的反思之中,展现出更流畅、更少机械感的过渡。
    • LRthe outfits were often strange'Strange' is a very common, general adjective. A higher band answer would likely choose a more vivid or precise word for the same idea, such as 'ridiculous', which carries a stronger, more specific connotation.'Strange'是一个非常常见、笼统的形容词。更高分段的回答很可能会为同样的想法选择一个更生动或更精确的词,比如'ridiculous',这个词带有更强烈、更具体的内涵。
    • GRAChildren who never get to choose anything will have to make big decisions at eighteen with no practice. This is a single, grammatically simple sentence with one subordinate clause. A 7.5 answer would likely turn this into a more dramatic conditional structure, such as 'Deprive children of any say at all, and...', for a more flexible, spoken-sounding effect.这是一个语法简单、带一个从属从句的单句。7.5分的回答很可能会把它变成一个更具戏剧性的条件结构,比如'Deprive children of any say at all, and...',以达到更灵活、更具口语感的效果。
    7.0 分

The opener 'Yes, honestly' and the aside 'I'm convinced that's actually where' add natural spoken reflection beyond a 6.5 answer's flat statements, while the dash before the ownership claim shows a more flexible way of adding emphasis.开头的'Yes, honestly'和插入语'I'm convinced that's actually where',在6.5分回答平铺直叙的陈述之上,增添了自然的口语式反思,而'归属'这一论断前的破折号,展现出一种更灵活的强调方式。

Yes, honestly, as long as the decisions match the child's age. My sister Vy was choosing her own clothes at four, and the results were often ridiculous, but I'm convinced that's actually where her stubborn confidence comes from — she's been trusted with a decision every single day of her life. Children who are never allowed to decide anything tend to arrive at eighteen having to make huge choices with basically zero practice. The trick is keeping the stakes low: what to wear, which book, how to spend pocket money. Letting a six-year-old decide whether to go to school isn't exactly respect, though, it's more like abandoning the job. But some genuine choice, every day, does seem necessary.

    • FCLetting a six-year-old decide whether to go to school isn't exactly respect, though, it's more like abandoning the job.The trailing 'though' softens the contrast slightly while still making a firm point, a natural spoken habit of qualifying a strong claim mid-sentence. A 6.5 answer would more likely state this as a flatter, separate sentence without the softening tag.尾随的'though'稍微软化了这个对比,同时仍旧坚定地表明了观点,这是一种在句中限定一个强烈论断的自然口语习惯。6.5分的回答更可能会把这陈述为一个更平淡、独立的句子,而没有这个软化的尾句。
    • LRthat's actually where her stubborn confidence comes from'Stubborn confidence' pairs an unexpected, slightly negative word with a positive one, giving a more nuanced character description than a simple word like 'confident' alone. This is a moderately more sophisticated lexical choice than a 6.5 answer's plainer descriptions.'Stubborn confidence'把一个出人意料、略带负面色彩的词和一个正面的词配对,给出了比单一的'confident'更细腻的性格描述。这比6.5分回答更平实的描述,在用词上更为老练一些。
    • GRAChildren who are never allowed to decide anything tend to arrive at eighteen having to make huge choices with basically zero practice. The participial phrase 'having to make huge choices' is attached without a separate connecting clause, showing slightly more complex sentence-building than a 6.5 response's more basic subordinate clause. It doesn't yet reach the fully compressed imperative-conditional structure that a 7.5 answer uses for the same idea.分词短语'having to make huge choices'的附加不用独立的连接从句,展现出比6.5分回答更基础的从属从句稍微更复杂一点的句子构建能力。但它还没有达到7.5分回答对同一想法会用的那种完全压缩的祈使句-条件句结构。
    7.5 分

The imperative-conditional opener 'Deprive children of any say at all, and they arrive at eighteen...' and the closing balanced phrase show the compressed, flexible grammar typical of band 7.5, alongside the idiomatic aside 'results be damned'.祈使句-条件句式的开头'Deprive children of any say at all, and they arrive at eighteen...',以及结尾均衡的措辞,展现出7.5分典型的紧凑、灵活的语法,再加上地道的插入语'results be damned'。

Yes, provided the decisions are scaled to the child's age. My sister Vy was choosing her own clothes at four, results be damned, and I'm convinced that's precisely where her stubborn confidence comes from — she's been trusted with a real decision every single day of her life. Deprive children of any say at all, and they arrive at eighteen having to make enormous choices with zero practice behind them. The trick lies in keeping the stakes low: what to wear, which book, how to spend pocket money. Letting a six-year-old decide whether to go to school isn't respect, though, it's abdicating the job of parenting. But some genuine choice, exercised daily, seems less a luxury than a necessity.

    • FCBut some genuine choice, exercised daily, seems less a luxury than a necessity. This closing sentence rounds off the whole answer with a compact, balanced contrast, giving a polished final judgement rather than simply restating the opinion. A 6.5 or 7.0 answer would more likely end with a plainer statement like 'some real choice every day is necessary'.这个结尾句用一个紧凑、均衡的对比,为整个回答收尾,给出一个精致的最终判断,而不是单纯重申观点。6.5分或7.0分的回答更可能以一个更平实的陈述结尾,比如'some real choice every day is necessary'。
    • LRit's abdicating the job of parenting'Abdicating' is a genuinely less common, more formal word than 'abandoning', typically associated with giving up a position of responsibility, which fits precisely with the point about parental duty. It is a more sophisticated lexical choice than the more general verb a lower band would default to.'Abdicating'是一个比'abandoning'真正不常见、更正式的词,通常与放弃一个负有责任的职位相关联,这与关于父母职责的观点恰好契合。这比低分段默认会用的更笼统的动词,是一个更老练的用词选择。
    • GRADeprive children of any say at all, and they arrive at eighteen having to make enormous choices with zero practice behind them. This imperative-plus-conditional structure replaces a more conventional relative clause with a punchier, more flexible construction. This kind of grammatical risk-taking for stylistic effect is characteristic of the range expected at 7.5.这种祈使句加条件句的结构,用一个更有力、更灵活的构造取代了更传统的定语从句。这种为达到文体效果而进行的语法冒险,是7.5分所要求的范围的特征。
