6.5 分

Simple, high-frequency adjectives in a list ('quieter, older, and more colourful') and a basic even-though/because sentence keep the description clear but linguistically plain, typical Band 6.5.一连串简单高频的形容词列举('quieter, older, and more colourful')以及一个基础的 even though/because 句式,让描述清晰但语言上比较朴素,是6.5分的典型特征。

The city I want to talk about is Hoi An, which is an old town about thirty minutes from Da Nang, where I live. I went there earlier this year with my friend Trang, and we spent just one weekend there, two days and one night, because it's so close to home.

We mostly walked around the ancient town, looking at the old yellow houses and the small shops selling lanterns and clothes. In the evening, we bought paper lanterns and put them on the river, which is something a lot of visitors do there. We also ate a lot, especially cao lầu, which is a noodle dish you can only really find in Hoi An, and we tried on some clothes at the tailor shops, although we didn't buy anything in the end.

Even though we only spent two days there, it felt like enough time to enjoy the city properly, because it isn't very big.

I really enjoyed visiting Hoi An because it feels completely different from Da Nang, even though it's so close. It's quieter, older, and more colourful, especially at night when all the lanterns are lit up. Walking around with Trang, just talking and taking photos, was really relaxing, and it made me forget about work completely for a whole weekend.

  • LRIt's quieter, older, and more colourfulThis is a three-item adjective list — "quieter, older, and more colourful" — all high-frequency comparative adjectives with no attempt at more specific or vivid vocabulary. That flat but accurate listing is exactly the 6.5 ceiling: a 7.0 answer would likely reach for one more specific word here (e.g. "atmospheric" or "lantern-lit"), while a genuinely lower-band speaker might drop the comparative "-er" forms altogether. In context, this is the candidate's payoff line for why Hoi An felt different from Da Nang, so the plainness of the language sits right against the sophistication of the observation.
  • GRAEven though we only spent two days there, it felt like enough time to enjoy the city properly, because it isn't very big. This sentence stacks two subordinate clauses — a concession ("Even though...") and a reason ("because...") — onto one main clause, which is the kind of controlled complex-sentence building that separates 6.5 from a lower band, but the two clauses are simply added rather than nested or varied, with no relative clause layered in. A 7.0 answer would likely vary the connector or embed one clause inside the other, while a genuine 6.0 speaker might instead produce two separate simple sentences. It's accurate and does real work justifying the short stay, but it's the only structural trick used, which is characteristic of a 6.5 answer that plays it safe.
  • FCit made me forget about work completely for a whole weekend. This closing line directly answers "why you enjoyed it" with a single, concrete consequence — forgetting about work — rather than pausing to reflect on what that break meant or drawing a wider conclusion. At 6.5, one clear reason delivered plainly is sufficient for coherence, whereas a 7.5 answer would likely turn this into an evaluative aside about what the weekend revealed about work-life balance. Given that the whole answer builds toward this payoff about relaxing with Trang, ending on a flat factual statement rather than a reflective one keeps the fluency solid but unremarkable, exactly the 6.5 target.

A short evaluative contrast about the streets feeling 'normal, everyday Hue rather than a place built purely for visitors' shows the reasoned development and comfortable complex grammar expected at Band 7.0.关于街道给人感觉'寻常、日常的顺化,而非专为游客打造之地'这一简短的评价性对比,展现出7.0分所期待的有理有据的展开以及运用自如的复合语法。

The city I'd like to talk about is Hue, the old imperial capital, which is about two and a half hours north of Da Nang by car. I went there last winter with two colleagues from work, and we ended up spending three days there, which felt just about right.

While we were there, we visited the Imperial City and a couple of the royal tombs outside town, which I found surprisingly peaceful compared to how busy I expected them to be. We also took a boat trip along the Perfume River one evening, which was probably my favourite part of the whole trip. Food-wise, we tried a lot of the local specialities, like bún bò Huế and these small savoury cakes that Hue is famous for, and honestly I think I ate better there than I have anywhere else in Vietnam.

Three days was enough to see the main sights without rushing too much, though I do feel like there's more of the city I'd like to explore if I went back.

I really enjoyed visiting Hue because it has a completely different atmosphere from Da Nang. It's calmer, a bit more traditional, and there's a real sense of history in the architecture that you don't get in a newer coastal city. I also liked that it wasn't overly touristy — a lot of the streets still felt like normal, everyday Hue rather than a place built purely for visitors. Walking around the citadel at sunset with my colleagues, just talking and taking it all in, is a memory I still think back on fairly often.

  • FCit wasn't overly touristy — a lot of the streets still felt like normal, everyday Hue rather than a place built purely for visitorsThe dash introduces an elaboration that explicitly contrasts two states -- "normal, everyday Hue" versus "a place built purely for visitors" -- moving from a simple evaluative claim ("wasn't overly touristy") to the specific observation that supports it. This reason-then-evidence structure within one sentence is the coherent development the Band 7.0 fluency and coherence target rewards, going a step beyond just listing what was visited.破折号引出一段明确对比两种状态的阐述——"normal, everyday Hue"与"a place built purely for visitors"——从一个简单的评价性论断("wasn't overly touristy")过渡到支持这一论断的具体观察。这种在一句话内完成"先给理由、后给证据"的结构,正是Band 7.0流利度与连贯性标准所奖励的连贯发展方式,比单纯罗列去过哪些地方更进了一步。
  • LRrather than a place built purely for visitors"A place built purely for visitors" is a topic-specific descriptive phrase that precisely names the contrast being drawn, rather than a plainer word like "touristy" repeated, or a more idiomatic phrase like "a tourist trap" that a Band 7.5 answer might reach for. It stays flexible enough to sound natural and specific, but still built from common words rather than an idiom, matching Band 7.0's lexical ceiling."A place built purely for visitors"是一个贴合话题的描述性短语,精准地道出了所要表达的对比,而不是重复使用像"touristy"这样平淡的词,也不是像"a tourist trap"这样Band 7.5答案可能会用到的更具习语色彩的说法。它保持了足够的灵活性,听起来自然而具体,但仍然是由常见词汇构建而成,而非一个习语,正好契合Band 7.0的词汇上限。
  • GRAWalking around the citadel at sunset with my colleagues, just talking and taking it all in, is a memory I still think back on fairly often.A fronted participial phrase ("Walking around the citadel at sunset...") functions as the sentence's subject, further elaborated by an embedded phrase ("just talking and taking it all in") before the main verb "is" finally arrives, and the sentence closes with a relative clause ("that I still think back on"). This is an ambitious but accurate structure for Band 7.0, using participial subject fronting -- more typically a 7.5-level feature -- though without the additional idiomatic or figurative layering that would confirm a full 7.5 ceiling elsewhere in the answer.一个前置的分词短语("Walking around the citadel at sunset...")充当了句子的主语,中间又嵌入了另一个短语加以补充("just talking and taking it all in"),直到主要动词"is"最后才出现,句子最后以一个关系从句结尾("that I still think back on")。对Band 7.0而言,这是一个有野心但依然准确的结构,使用了分词主语前置——这通常更属于Band 7.5的特征——不过答案其他地方并没有额外的习语或比喻层次来完全确认达到Band 7.5的水准。
7.5 分

Personifying the city ('Da Lat is a city that doesn't seem to be in a hurry to be anything') and the vivid physical image of shoulders dropping 'two centimetres' reflect confident, idiomatic Band 7.5 language.将城市拟人化的写法('大叻是一座似乎并不急于成为任何模样的城市'),以及肩膀'放松了两厘米'这种生动具体的身体意象,都体现出7.5分那种自信、地道的语言运用。

The city I'd pick is Da Lat, up in the Central Highlands. I went there last April with my younger sister Vy, who was on a break from university in Ho Chi Minh City, and we spent four days there — which sounds like a lot for a small city, but honestly it wasn't enough.

The first thing you notice is the temperature. Coming from Da Nang, where April already feels like standing next to an oven, stepping off the bus into fourteen degrees and mist was almost funny. We'd get up early and walk around Xuân Hương lake before the traffic started, buy hot soy milk from a lady with a cart, and then just sit on a bench feeling smug about how well we'd chosen. We rented a scooter and drove out to the pine forests and a strawberry farm, and in the evenings we ate far too much at the night market — grilled rice paper, the sweet potato cakes, everything.

What made it special, I think, was the pace. Da Lat is a city that doesn't seem to be in a hurry to be anything. The houses are these slightly faded French villas, the coffee shops are half hidden in gardens, and nobody honks. For someone whose job involves staring at a screen and worrying about pixels, it was like my shoulders dropped two centimetres for four days.

And being there with Vy mattered too. We don't get much time together now that she's studying in another city, so those long, slow days were as much about that as about the place.

  • LRDa Lat is a city that doesn't seem to be in a hurry to be anything. This sentence personifies the city, giving it the human quality of not being "in a hurry," which is a genuinely idiomatic, figurative way of capturing atmosphere rather than a literal description like "Da Lat is a quiet, slow-paced city." The 7.5 tier's descriptor for "one figurative or idiomatic touch if it fits the moment" is a good match here because the personification lands naturally as a thesis statement for the paragraph that follows, rather than as an isolated flourish. A 7.0 answer would more likely state the pace directly and plainly, without reaching for personification.这句话把城市拟人化,赋予它 "not being in a hurry" 这种人的特质,这是一种真正具有习语色彩、富有画面感的方式来捕捉氛围,而不是像 "Da Lat is a quiet, slow-paced city." 那样的字面描述。7.5分等级中"若符合当下语境,加入一处比喻或习语色彩"的描述在这里非常贴切,因为这一拟人手法自然地充当了后续段落的主旨句,而不是一个孤立的修辞点缀。7.0分的答案更可能直接、平实地陈述节奏,而不会用到拟人手法。
  • GRAstepping off the bus into fourteen degrees and mist was almost funnyThe -ing clause "stepping off the bus into fourteen degrees and mist" functions as the grammatical subject of the sentence, a less common and more literary structure than the safer "When I stepped off the bus... it was almost funny" a 7.0 answer would likely default to. Using a gerund-phrase subject accurately here is exactly the "flexible, less-common structure handled accurately" the 7.5 tier rewards under Grammatical Range. It also compresses the sensory contrast, leaving the heat of Da Nang for cold, misty Da Lat, into one fluid sentence rather than spreading it across two.-ing从句 "stepping off the bus into fourteen degrees and mist" 充当了整个句子的语法主语,这是一种比7.0分答案很可能默认采用的更保险说法 "When I stepped off the bus... it was almost funny" 更少见、更具文学色彩的结构。在这里准确运用一个动名词短语作主语,正是7.5分等级在"语法范围"标准下所奖励的"灵活、不常见的结构被准确运用"。它还把这种感官上的反差——离开岘港的炎热,来到清冷多雾的大叻——压缩进一个流畅的句子里,而不是分成两句来写。
  • FCit was like my shoulders dropped two centimetres for four daysRather than simply stating that the trip was relaxing, the speaker converts the feeling into a specific, slightly exaggerated physical image ("shoulders dropped two centimetres"), which evaluates the effect of the trip rather than just describing what happened. This kind of vivid, reflective figuring of an emotional state is the "clear reflective or evaluative point" the 7.5 tier expects beyond plain description; a 7.0 answer would more likely settle for a flatter claim like "I felt really relaxed there." The specificity of "two centimetres" also makes the exaggeration read as playful rather than clichéd, which supports natural delivery.

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain closing summary 'But usually, people choose a city because of one clear reason', which simply restates the opening idea.这是一篇6.5分的答案,因为它平实的结尾总结“But usually, people choose a city because of one clear reason”只是简单重述了开头的想法。

I think tourists usually choose a city because it is famous for one thing. For example, Hoi An, near where I live, is famous for its lantern-lit old town, and this image brings most of the tourists there. Other things matter too, like how easy and cheap it is to travel there, and whether it looks good on social media. It is interesting that people often talk about something different after their trip, like the food, even if they came for the lanterns. But usually, people choose a city because of one clear reason.

    • FCBut usually, people choose a city because of one clear reason. This closing sentence repeats the opening claim almost word for word, using the basic connector 'But', with no new insight added. A 7.0 answer would restate this with the more confident 'honestly, the initial choice is nearly always driven by one strong, simple association', and a 7.5 answer would compress the idea into an even tighter closing phrase.这句结尾几乎逐字重复了开头的论断,用了基础的连接词“But”,没有加入任何新的见解。7.0分的答案会用更自信的“honestly, the initial choice is nearly always driven by one strong, simple association”来重新表述,而7.5分的答案会把这个想法压缩成一个更紧凑的结尾短语。
    • LRfamous for one thingThis is a plain, generic phrase describing the city's appeal, without any more vivid or specific wording. A 7.0 answer would restate this as 'a good example' of a city with 'one strong, simple association', and a 7.5 answer would use the more vivid phrase 'owns one image'.这是一个平实、笼统的短语,用来描述城市的吸引力,没有任何更生动或更具体的措辞。7.0分的答案会把它重新表述为一座拥有“one strong, simple association”的城市的“a good example”,而7.5分的答案会用更生动的短语“owns one image”。
    • GRAthis image brings most of the tourists thereThis is a short, simple active sentence in plain subject-verb-object order. A 7.0 answer would extend this into a longer sentence using 'basically carries the whole tourism industry there', and a 7.5 answer would use the more vivid metaphor 'carries the entire tourism industry on its back'.这是一个简短、简单的主动句,遵循平实的主谓宾语序。7.0分的答案会用“basically carries the whole tourism industry there”把它延伸成一个更长的句子,而7.5分的答案会用更生动的隐喻“carries the entire tourism industry on its back”。
    7.0 分

This is a 7.0 answer because of the reflective observation 'What's interesting is that the reasons people give afterwards are often different', which adds a genuine layer of nuance before the closing statement.这是一篇7.0分的答案,因为有反思性的观察“What's interesting is that the reasons people give afterwards are often different”,在结尾陈述之前增添了一层真正的细腻感。

Usually because the city has one thing it's known for that they can picture before they arrive, I'd say. Hoi An, just down the road from me, is a good example, everyone comes for the lantern-lit old town, and that single image basically carries the whole tourism industry there. Practical factors matter too, how easy it is to get to, whether it's affordable, and increasingly whether it photographs well on social media. What's interesting is that the reasons people give afterwards are often different, they came for the lanterns and left talking about the food. But honestly, the initial choice is nearly always driven by one strong, simple association.

    • FCWhat's interesting is that the reasons people give afterwards are often differentThis sentence uses a cleft construction ('What's interesting is that...') to highlight an observation, a more reflective move than simply stating the fact plainly. A 6.5 answer would state this more flatly as 'It is interesting that people often talk about something different after their trip', and a 7.5 answer would rephrase this as 'What's genuinely interesting is how the story shifts afterwards'.这句话用强调句结构(“What's interesting is that...”)来突出一个观察,比平铺直叙地陈述事实更具反思性。6.5分的答案会更平淡地陈述为“It is interesting that people often talk about something different after their trip”,而7.5分的答案会重新表述为“What's genuinely interesting is how the story shifts afterwards”。
    • LRcarries the whole tourism industry thereThis phrase personifies the city's image as something that 'carries' an entire industry, a more vivid collocation than the plain 'brings most of the tourists there' used at 6.5.这个短语把城市的形象拟人化,当作某种能“撑起”整个产业的东西,比6.5分使用的平实的“brings most of the tourists there”更生动的搭配。
    • GRAeveryone comes for the lantern-lit old town, and that single image basically carries the whole tourism industry thereThis sentence coordinates two clauses with 'and', the second one built around a vivid personifying verb, showing more developed sentence construction than the plain version at 6.5. A 6.5 answer would state these as two separate shorter sentences.这句话用“and”把两个分句协调在一起,第二个分句围绕着一个生动的拟人化动词构建,比6.5分的平实版本展现出更成熟的造句方式。6.5分的答案会把这些内容分成两个更短的独立句子。
    7.5 分

This reaches 7.5 through the vivid metaphor 'carries the entire tourism industry on its back' and the parallel participial contrast 'arrive chasing lanterns and leave raving about the food instead'.这篇答案通过生动的隐喻“carries the entire tourism industry on its back”,以及分词式的对仗对比“arrive chasing lanterns and leave raving about the food instead”,达到了7.5分的水平。

Usually because a city owns one image people can picture long before they ever arrive. Hoi An, just down the road from me, is the textbook case, everyone comes for the lantern-lit old town, and that single postcard shot carries the entire tourism industry on its back. Practical factors weigh in too, ease of access, affordability, and increasingly how well a place photographs for social media. What's genuinely interesting is how the story shifts afterwards, visitors arrive chasing lanterns and leave raving about the food instead. But the initial pull, almost without exception, comes down to one strong, uncomplicated association.

    • FCWhat's genuinely interesting is how the story shifts afterwardsThis sentence adds the intensifying adverb 'genuinely' and the more abstract noun 'the story' to sharpen the observation beyond the 7.0 version's plainer wording. A 6.5 answer states this idea with no such reflective framing device at all.这句话加上了强调副词“genuinely”和更抽象的名词“the story”,让这个观察比7.0版本更平实的措辞更加犀利。6.5分的答案陈述这个想法时完全没有这种反思性的框架装置。
    • LRcarries the entire tourism industry on its backThis is a vivid, physical metaphor (an image literally 'carrying' something 'on its back') considerably more distinctive than the plainer 'basically carries the whole tourism industry there' used at 7.0.这是一个生动、具有身体感的隐喻(一幅画面真的“carrying”某样东西“on its back”),比7.0分使用的更平实的“basically carries the whole tourism industry there”有特色得多。
    • GRAvisitors arrive chasing lanterns and leave raving about the food insteadThis sentence uses two parallel participial phrases ('chasing lanterns', 'raving about the food') attached to contrasting verbs ('arrive', 'leave'), a compact and flexible structure. A 7.0 answer would use the plainer finite clause 'they came for the lanterns and left talking about the food', and a 6.5 answer would state this even more simply.这句话用两个平行的分词短语(“chasing lanterns”、“raving about the food”)分别附加在两个形成对比的动词(“arrive”、“leave”)上,是一个紧凑而灵活的结构。7.0分的答案会用更平实的限定分句“they came for the lanterns and left talking about the food”,而6.5分的答案会表述得更简单。

    6.5 分

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain comparison and the simple closing conditional sentence 'But if I could only travel once a year, I would choose a place with history'.这是一篇6.5分的答案,因为它的比较很平实,而且结尾的条件句“But if I could only travel once a year, I would choose a place with history”也很简单。

I think historical cities are usually more interesting for tourists, though it depends on what you like. I spent a weekend in Singapore once, and I found it nice but easy to forget, because glass towers look similar everywhere. But walking around the old citadel in Hue, my hometown, feels different because it could not be anywhere else. Historical cities give you something unique, which is what travel is usually about. Some people still like modern cities for shopping or nightlife, and they are often more comfortable. But if I could only travel once a year, I would choose a place with history.

    • FCBut if I could only travel once a year, I would choose a place with history. This closing sentence uses a plain second conditional structure in a straightforward way, with no added emphasis. A 7.0 answer would restate this with 'if I only had one trip a year, honestly, I'd choose the place with a story', adding a spoken hedge and a more vivid noun, and a 7.5 answer would use the intensifier 'every time' at the end.这句结尾用了一个平实的第二条件句结构,方式很直白,没有加任何强调。7.0分的答案会用“if I only had one trip a year, honestly, I'd choose the place with a story”来重新表述,加入了一个口语化的缓和语和一个更生动的名词,而7.5分的答案会在结尾用强调语“every time”。
    • LReasy to forgetThis is a plain, literal adjective phrase describing the impression Singapore left. A 7.0 answer would use the more natural 'oddly forgettable', and a 7.5 answer would compress this into 'strangely unable to recall much of it afterwards'.这是一个平实、直白的形容词短语,用来描述新加坡留下的印象。7.0分的答案会用更自然的“oddly forgettable”,而7.5分的答案会把它压缩成“strangely unable to recall much of it afterwards”。
    • GRAI found it nice but easy to forget, because glass towers look similar everywhereThis sentence joins two clauses with the simple connector 'because' in a plain causal structure. A 7.0 answer would restate the reason as a separate reflective aside, 'glass towers look much the same wherever you are', and a 7.5 answer would compress the whole idea into a single, more elegant sentence.这句话用简单的连接词“because”把两个分句连接成一个平实的因果结构。7.0分的答案会把理由重新表述成一个独立的反思性插入语,“glass towers look much the same wherever you are”,而7.5分的答案会把整个想法压缩成一个更优雅的单句。
    7.0 分

This is a 7.0 answer because of the natural hedge 'though it depends what you're after' right after the opening claim and the spoken tag 'honestly' in the closing sentence.这是一篇7.0分的答案,因为紧跟在开头论断后面有一个自然的缓和语“though it depends what you're after”,以及结尾句中的口语化标记词“honestly”。

For most tourists, I'd say historical cities win, though it depends what you're after. I spent a weekend in Singapore once and found it impressive but oddly forgettable, glass towers look much the same wherever you are. Whereas walking around the old citadel in Hue, my hometown, you're standing somewhere that couldn't be anywhere else. Historical cities offer difference, which is what travel is usually about. Modern cities do have their fans, people who love architecture, shopping or nightlife, and they tend to be more comfortable overall. But if I only had one trip a year, honestly, I'd choose the place with a story.

    • FCthough it depends what you're afterThis qualifying clause, attached directly to the opening claim, softens the statement in a natural, spoken way rather than stating a flat opinion. A 6.5 answer would state the opinion plainly with 'though it depends on what you like' as a separate clause with less natural rhythm, while a 7.5 answer reframes the whole opening with 'though it hinges on what you're actually after'.这个限定性分句直接附加在开头论断上,以一种自然、口语化的方式软化了这个陈述,而不是给出一个平淡的观点。6.5分的答案会用“though it depends on what you like”作为一个独立分句,平淡地表达这个观点,节奏不那么自然,而7.5分的答案会用“though it hinges on what you're actually after”重新构建整个开头。
    • LRoddly forgettableThis is a more natural, compact adjective than the plainer phrase 'nice but easy to forget' used at 6.5, combining the idea into a single word.这是一个比6.5分使用的更平实的短语“nice but easy to forget”更自然、更紧凑的形容词,把这个想法浓缩进了一个词里。
    • GRAWhereas walking around the old citadel in Hue, my hometown, you're standing somewhere that couldn't be anywhere else. This sentence opens with the subordinator 'Whereas' followed by a gerund phrase and an existential construction ('you're standing somewhere that...'), a more flexible structure than the plain causal clause at 6.5. A 6.5 answer would use the simpler connector 'But' followed by a plain 'because' clause.这句话以从属连词“Whereas”开头,后面跟着一个动名词短语和一个存在句结构(“you're standing somewhere that...”),比6.5分的平实因果分句更灵活。6.5分的答案会用更简单的连接词“But”,后面跟一个平实的“because”分句。
    7.5 分

This reaches 7.5 through the inanimate subject construction 'A weekend in Singapore left me impressed' and the closing intensifier 'every time', a more idiomatic closing than a plain conditional statement.这篇答案通过非人称主语结构“A weekend in Singapore left me impressed”,以及结尾的强调语“every time”,达到了7.5分的水平,比一个平实的条件句更地道地收尾。

For most tourists, historical cities probably win out, though it hinges on what you're actually after. A weekend in Singapore left me impressed yet strangely unable to recall much of it afterwards, glass towers, after all, look much the same wherever you land. Wandering the old citadel in Hue, my hometown, by contrast, you're standing somewhere that couldn't exist anywhere else on earth. Historical cities trade in difference, which is arguably what travel is for in the first place. Modern cities have their devotees too, those drawn to architecture, shopping or nightlife, and they're generally the more comfortable option. But given only one trip a year, I'd take the place with a story every time.

    • FCA weekend in Singapore left me impressed yet strangely unable to recall much of it afterwardsThis sentence uses an inanimate subject ('A weekend...') with the verb 'left me', a more literary construction than the personal subject 'I spent a weekend' used at lower bands. A 7.0 answer would use the more standard personal subject 'I spent a weekend in Singapore once and found it impressive'.这句话用一个非人称主语(“A weekend...”)搭配动词“left me”,比低分答案使用的人称主语“I spent a weekend”更具文学色彩。7.0分的答案会用更标准的人称主语“I spent a weekend in Singapore once and found it impressive”。
    • LRtrade in differenceThis is a vivid, idiomatic metaphorical collocation ('trade in') describing what historical cities offer, more distinctive than the plainer 'offer difference' used at 7.0.这是一个生动、地道的隐喻性搭配(“trade in”),用来描述历史悠久的城市所提供的东西,比7.0分使用的更平实的“offer difference”更有特色。
    • GRABut given only one trip a year, I'd take the place with a story every time. This closing sentence uses a fronted participial phrase ('given only one trip a year') instead of a full conditional clause, plus the intensifying tag 'every time', a more compact and idiomatic structure. A 7.0 answer would use the fuller conditional 'if I only had one trip a year, honestly, I'd choose the place with a story', and a 6.5 answer would use the plainest conditional structure.这句结尾用一个前置的分词短语(“given only one trip a year”)取代了完整的条件分句,再加上强调标记词“every time”,是一个更紧凑、更地道的结构。7.0分的答案会用更完整的条件句“if I only had one trip a year, honestly, I'd choose the place with a story”,而6.5分的答案会用最平实的条件句结构。

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain narrative example about the friend and the simple listed reasons joined by 'and because', with no more elegant structure.这是一篇6.5分的答案,因为它关于朋友的例子是平铺直叙的叙事,而且用“and because”连接的理由列表也很简单,没有更精致的结构。

Often not, I think. What tourists love, a small, lively centre with cafes and things to do, can become tiring when it is right outside your door every day. A friend of mine moved into the old town in Hoi An because she loved visiting it, but she moved out again within a year because of the crowds, the high prices, and because every shop sold souvenirs instead of vegetables. Tourism also makes rent go up until local people cannot afford to live there anymore. Some cities, like Da Nang, try to keep the tourist areas separate from where people actually live.

    • FCOften not, I think. This short opening sentence states the position plainly with the basic verb 'think', with no reflective framing. A 7.0 answer would open with the fuller 'Often not, unfortunately', adding a mild evaluative adverb, and a 7.5 answer would extend this with 'and there's a certain irony in that'.这句简短的开头用基础动词“think”平实地陈述了立场,没有反思性的框架。7.0分的答案会用更完整的“Often not, unfortunately”开头,加入一个轻度评价性的副词,而7.5分的答案会用“and there's a certain irony in that”来延伸这一点。
    • LRhigh pricesThis is a plain, basic adjective-noun combination describing one of the problems. A 7.0 answer would use the more precise 'the prices' within a fuller list structure, and a 7.5 answer would use the more vivid 'inflated prices'.这是一个平实、基础的形容词加名词的组合,用来描述其中一个问题。7.0分的答案会在一个更完整的列表结构里使用更精确的“the prices”,而7.5分的答案会使用更生动的“inflated prices”。
    • GRAshe moved out again within a year because of the crowds, the high prices, and because every shop sold souvenirs instead of vegetablesThis sentence lists three reasons but awkwardly repeats 'because' partway through the list. A 7.0 answer would remove the second 'because' for a cleaner list structure, and a 7.5 answer would compress the list into a participial phrase, 'worn down by the crowds, the inflated prices, and shops stocked with souvenirs'.这句话列出了三个理由,但在列表中途别扭地重复了一次“because”。7.0分的答案会去掉第二个“because”,让列表结构更干净,而7.5分的答案会把这份列表压缩成一个分词短语,“worn down by the crowds, the inflated prices, and shops stocked with souvenirs”。
    7.0 分

This is a 7.0 answer because of the natural evaluative adverb 'unfortunately' right after the opening judgement and the apposition-style list explaining the friend's departure with no repeated connector.这是一篇7.0分的答案,因为紧跟在开头判断后面有一个自然的评价性副词“unfortunately”,以及用同位语方式列出朋友离开原因、没有重复连接词的列表。

Often not, unfortunately. What tourists love, a compact, atmospheric centre full of cafés and things to do, becomes exhausting when it's outside your front door every single day. A friend of mine moved into the old town in Hoi An because she'd loved visiting, and she was gone within a year, the crowds, the prices, the fact that every shop sold souvenirs rather than vegetables. Tourism also pushes up rents until the locals who gave the place its character can't afford to stay. Cities that manage both, like Da Nang to some extent, tend to keep the tourist zone fairly separate from where people actually live.

    • FCOften not, unfortunately. This opening adds the evaluative adverb 'unfortunately' to the bare judgement, giving it a reflective, slightly rueful tone rather than a flat statement. A 6.5 answer would open more plainly with 'Often not, I think', and a 7.5 answer would extend this further with 'and there's a certain irony in that'.这个开头在赤裸的判断上加了评价性副词“unfortunately”,让它带上一种反思性的、略带惋惜的语气,而不是一个平淡的陈述。6.5分的答案会更平实地以“Often not, I think”开头,而7.5分的答案会用“and there's a certain irony in that”进一步延伸。
    • LRshe was gone within a year, the crowds, the prices, the fact that every shop sold souvenirs rather than vegetablesThis list of reasons is presented in apposition without a repeated 'because', a cleaner and more fluent structure than the 6.5 version's repeated connector. A 6.5 answer would repeat 'because of' and 'because' across the list, producing a slightly clumsier structure.这份理由列表以同位语的方式呈现,没有重复“because”,比6.5版本重复连接词的结构更干净、更流畅。6.5分的答案会在整个列表中反复使用“because of”和“because”,造成一个略显笨拙的结构。
    • GRAA friend of mine moved into the old town in Hoi An because she'd loved visiting, and she was gone within a year, the crowds, the prices, the fact that every shop sold souvenirs rather than vegetablesThis sentence uses a past perfect ('she'd loved visiting') to mark the sequence of events clearly, followed by an appositive list with no repeated connector, a more advanced structure than the plain coordinated list at 6.5. A 6.5 answer would use the simple past throughout and a list awkwardly joined by 'and because'.这句话用过去完成时(“she'd loved visiting”)清楚地标示出事件的先后顺序,后面跟着一个没有重复连接词的同位语列表,比6.5分平实的并列列表更高级。6.5分的答案会通篇使用一般过去时,并用“and because”别扭地连接列表。
    7.5 分

This reaches 7.5 through the vivid opening verb 'curdles into exhaustion' and the closing idiom 'at arm's length', both replacing plainer descriptive phrases used at lower bands.这篇答案通过生动的开头动词“curdles into exhaustion”(变质成疲惫),以及结尾习语“at arm's length”(保持一定距离),达到了7.5分的水平,两者都取代了低分答案使用的更平实的描述性短语。

Often not, unfortunately, and there's a certain irony in that. What tourists adore, a compact, atmospheric centre brimming with cafés and things to do, curdles into exhaustion once it's sitting right outside your front door every day. A friend of mine moved into Hoi An's old town precisely because she'd loved visiting, only to be gone within the year, worn down by the crowds, the inflated prices, and shops stocked with souvenirs rather than vegetables. Tourism also drives up rents until the very locals who gave a place its character can no longer afford to stay in it. Cities that balance both, Da Nang to some degree, tend to keep the tourist zone at arm's length from where people actually live.

    • FCOften not, unfortunately, and there's a certain irony in that. This opening extends the evaluative adverb with a further reflective clause, 'and there's a certain irony in that', showing a genuinely interpretive opening rather than a flat judgement. A 7.0 answer stops at the shorter 'Often not, unfortunately', and a 6.5 answer opens even more plainly.这个开头用一个进一步的反思性分句延伸了评价性副词,“and there's a certain irony in that”,展现出一个真正具有解读性的开头,而不是一个平淡的判断。7.0分的答案止步于更简短的“Often not, unfortunately”,而6.5分的答案开头更加平实。
    • LRcurdles into exhaustionThis is a vivid, unusual verb choice ('curdles', normally used for milk turning sour) applied metaphorically to a place, considerably more distinctive than the plain 'becomes exhausting' used at 7.0.这是一个生动、不寻常的动词选择(“curdles”,通常用来形容牛奶变酸),被隐喻性地用在了一个地方上,比7.0分使用的平实的“becomes exhausting”有特色得多。
    • GRAworn down by the crowds, the inflated prices, and shops stocked with souvenirs rather than vegetablesThis is a participial phrase ('worn down by...') replacing a finite clause, compressing the reason for leaving into a single compact structure attached to the main clause. A 7.0 answer would use the appositive list without a participle, and a 6.5 answer would use the clumsier repeated-connector list.这是一个分词短语(“worn down by...”),取代了一个限定分句,把离开的原因压缩进了一个附加在主句上的紧凑结构里。7.0分的答案会用一个不带分词的同位语列表,而6.5分的答案会用那种更笨拙的、重复连接词的列表。

    6.5 分

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain listing sentences and the simple closing judgement 'but for most people in their twenties, it is still worth it'.这是一篇6.5分的答案,因为它的列举句很平实,而且结尾的简单判断“but for most people in their twenties, it is still worth it”也很简单。

I think the main reason people move to cities is work, and then everything else that comes with it. I moved from Hue to Da Nang because there was only one design studio in my hometown, but there are many here. When you live somewhere with more jobs, you also get better hospitals, universities, and more restaurants. Another reason, especially for young people, is that cities give you more freedom, because nobody knows your family like in a small town. Of course, rent and noise are higher in cities, but for most people in their twenties, it is still worth it.

    • FCOf course, rent and noise are higher in cities, but for most people in their twenties, it is still worth it.This closing sentence uses the basic hedge 'Of course' before a plain 'but' contrast, without any further nuance. A 7.0 answer would restate this with the more reflective 'The cost is high rent and noise, but for most people in their twenties, honestly, the trade is clearly worth it', and a 7.5 answer would use the phrase 'that trade is clearly worth paying'.这句结尾在一个平实的“but”对比之前,用了基础的缓和语“Of course”,没有更多的细腻之处。7.0分的答案会用更具反思性的“The cost is high rent and noise, but for most people in their twenties, honestly, the trade is clearly worth it”来重新表述,而7.5分的答案会用短语“that trade is clearly worth paying”。
    • LRmore freedomThis is a plain, generic noun phrase describing the appeal of cities for young people. A 7.0 answer would use the more precise and less common word 'anonymity', and a 7.5 answer keeps the same precise word within a more literary sentence.这是一个平实、笼统的名词短语,用来描述城市对年轻人的吸引力。7.0分的答案会用更精确、更不常见的词“anonymity”(匿名性),而7.5分的答案在一个更具文学色彩的句子里保留了同一个精确的词。
    • GRAnobody knows your family like in a small townThis is a short, simple clause with a plain comparative ending. A 7.0 answer would restructure this into a balanced semicolon sentence contrasting small towns and cities directly, and a 7.5 answer would use the more formal 'whereas' connector for the same contrast.这是一个简短、简单的分句,以一个平实的比较结尾。7.0分的答案会把它重新构建成一个用分号连接的、直接对比小镇和城市的平衡句子,而7.5分的答案会用更正式的连接词“whereas”来表达同样的对比。
    7.0 分

This is a 7.0 answer because of the precise word 'anonymity' introduced as a distinct reason and the semicolon-linked balanced sentence contrasting small towns with cities.这是一篇7.0分的答案,因为它引入了精确的词“anonymity”作为一个独立的理由,还有一个用分号连接、对比小镇与城市的平衡句子。

Work, mostly, and then everything that gathers around work, I'd say. I left Hue for Da Nang because there was exactly one design studio in my hometown and there are dozens here. Once you're somewhere with jobs, you also get the hospitals, the universities, the choice of restaurants, and a bigger pool of people to become friends with. There's a quieter reason too, especially for younger people, anonymity. In a small town everyone knows whose child you are; in a city you can figure out who you want to be. The cost is high rent and noise, but for most people in their twenties, honestly, the trade is clearly worth it.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCThere's a quieter reason too, especially for younger people, anonymity. This sentence builds anticipation by delaying the key noun 'anonymity' to the very end, after two introductory phrases, a more sophisticated rhetorical move than stating the reason directly. A 6.5 answer would state the idea plainly and directly as 'cities give you more freedom', with no such delayed emphasis.这句话通过把关键名词“anonymity”延迟到最后才揭晓,在两个引导性短语之后才出现,来营造一种期待感,比直接陈述理由更高明的修辞手法。6.5分的答案会平实、直接地陈述这个想法为“cities give you more freedom”,没有这种延迟的强调效果。
    • LRanonymityThis precise, moderately less common noun is a more specific and accurate word choice than the vague 'more freedom' used at 6.5, capturing exactly what the speaker means.这个精确、相当不常见的名词,比6.5分使用的模糊的“more freedom”更具体、更准确地捕捉到了说话人真正想表达的意思。
    • GRAIn a small town everyone knows whose child you are; in a city you can figure out who you want to be.This sentence uses a semicolon to join two balanced, parallel clauses contrasting small towns and cities, a more elegant structure than the plain comparative clause at 6.5. A 6.5 answer would use only one short clause ending in 'like in a small town' with no matching city-side clause.这句话用一个分号连接了两个平衡、并列的分句,对比了小镇和城市,比6.5分平实的比较分句更优雅。6.5分的答案只会用一个以“like in a small town”结尾的简短分句,没有对应的“城市这一边”的分句。

This reaches 7.5 through the vivid metaphor 'the whole ecosystem that clusters around it' and the closing evaluative phrase 'that trade is clearly worth paying', a more precise verb choice than the plain 'worth it'.这篇答案通过生动的隐喻“the whole ecosystem that clusters around it”,以及结尾评价性的短语“that trade is clearly worth paying”,达到了7.5分的水平,后者是一个比平实的“worth it”更精确的动词选择。

Work, mostly, and then the whole ecosystem that clusters around it. I left Hue for Da Nang simply because my hometown had exactly one design studio and this city has dozens. Once you've landed somewhere with jobs, the hospitals, universities, restaurant choices, and a far wider pool of potential friends all come bundled in. There's a quieter draw too, especially for the young, anonymity: in a small town everyone knows whose child you are, whereas in a city you get to decide who you'd rather be. The price is steep rent and constant noise, but for most people in their twenties, that trade is clearly worth paying.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCOnce you've landed somewhere with jobs, the hospitals, universities, restaurant choices, and a far wider pool of potential friends all come bundled in.This sentence uses the vivid idiom 'come bundled in' to describe how various city benefits arrive together, a more image-based construction than the plainer 'you also get' used at lower bands. A 7.0 answer uses the more literal verb 'get', and a 6.5 answer states this even more plainly.这句话用了生动的习语“come bundled in”来描述城市的各种好处如何一起到来,比低分答案使用的更平实的“you also get”更具画面感。7.0分的答案使用更直白的动词“get”,而6.5分的答案表述得更加平实。
    • LRthe whole ecosystem that clusters around itThis is a vivid, scientific metaphor ('ecosystem', 'clusters') applied to city life, considerably more distinctive than the plainer 'everything that gathers around work' used at 7.0.这是一个生动、科学化的隐喻(“ecosystem”、“clusters”),被用在了城市生活上,比7.0分使用的更平实的“everything that gathers around work”有特色得多。
    • GRAin a small town everyone knows whose child you are, whereas in a city you get to decide who you'd rather beThis sentence uses the subordinating connector 'whereas' instead of a semicolon to join the two balanced clauses, and replaces 'figure out' with the more idiomatic 'get to decide', a slightly more polished version of the 7.0 structure. A 6.5 answer would use only a single short clause with no matching city-side comparison at all.这句话用从属连接词“whereas”取代了分号来连接两个平衡的分句,并用更地道的“get to decide”取代了“figure out”,是7.0结构的一个略微更精致的版本。6.5分的答案只会用一个简短的分句,完全没有对应的“城市这一边”的比较。

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain listing sentence about city demands and the simple closing summary 'So it depends on whether someone already has friends and family nearby or not'.这是一篇6.5分的答案,因为它关于城市要求的列举句很平实,而且结尾的简单总结“So it depends on whether someone already has friends and family nearby or not”也很简单。

I think cities are usually better for younger people. City life needs energy to deal with long commutes, crowded buildings, and constant change, and younger people can handle that more easily while they are still building their life. My grandmother, for example, has always refused to move from Hue to Da Nang, even though the hospitals here are better. She likes that everything she needs is within a ten-minute walk. But cities can also be good for older people who live alone, because services and company are close by. So it depends on whether someone already has friends and family nearby or not.

    • FCSo it depends on whether someone already has friends and family nearby or not. This closing sentence uses the plain connector 'So' before a basic 'whether...or not' structure. A 7.0 answer would rephrase this with 'It really comes down to whether the person already has a strong local network or needs to find one', and a 7.5 answer would extend this with 'or is still hunting for one'.这句结尾用了平实的连接词“So”,后面跟着一个基础的“whether...or not”结构。7.0分的答案会用“It really comes down to whether the person already has a strong local network or needs to find one”来重新表述,而7.5分的答案会用“or is still hunting for one”来延伸这一点。
    • LRhandle that more easilyThis is a plain, generic verb phrase describing adaptability, without any more vivid or precise alternative. A 7.0 answer would restate this idea as 'suit someone who's still building a life', a more natural collocation, and a 7.5 answer would extend this with 'in the process of building a life'.这是一个平实、笼统的动词短语,用来描述适应能力,没有任何更生动或更精确的替代表达。7.0分的答案会把这个想法重新表述为“suit someone who's still building a life”,是一个更自然的搭配,而7.5分的答案会用“in the process of building a life”来延伸这一点。
    • GRACity life needs energy to deal with long commutes, crowded buildings, and constant change, and younger people can handle that more easily while they are still building their life. This long sentence coordinates two clauses with 'and' in a fairly plain structure, listing the demands separately from the response to them. A 7.0 answer would restructure this so the list of demands itself becomes the grammatical subject of the sentence, a more advanced construction.这句长句用“and”以一种相当平实的结构协调了两个分句,把“要求”和“应对方式”分开列出。7.0分的答案会重新构建这句话,让这份要求列表本身成为句子的语法主语,是一种更高级的构造。
    7.0 分

This is a 7.0 answer because of the compact opening fragment 'Younger people, on balance, I'd say' and the sentence where the list of city demands itself becomes the subject, 'the long commutes, the crowded buildings, the constant change all suit...'.这是一篇7.0分的答案,因为它有一个紧凑的开头片段“Younger people, on balance, I'd say”,以及一个让城市要求列表本身成为主语的句子,“the long commutes, the crowded buildings, the constant change all suit...”。

Younger people, on balance, I'd say. Cities reward energy and flexibility, the long commutes, the crowded buildings, the constant change all suit someone who's still building a life. My grandmother, on the other hand, has flatly refused every suggestion to move from Hue to Da Nang, even though the hospitals here are better. Her whole world is within a ten-minute walk, and that's what she values. That said, cities can be very good for older people who are on their own, because services and company are close by. It really comes down to whether the person already has a strong local network or needs to find one.

    • FCYounger people, on balance, I'd say. This opening fragment states the position compactly, without a full sentence structure, and adds the natural hedge 'on balance, I'd say', a more fluent opening than a full declarative sentence. A 6.5 answer would open with the fuller 'I think cities are usually better for younger people', and a 7.5 answer would extend this to 'tend to get the better end of the deal'.这个开头片段紧凑地表明了立场,没有完整的句子结构,并加上了自然的缓和语“on balance, I'd say”,比一个完整的陈述句更流畅。6.5分的答案会用更完整的“I think cities are usually better for younger people”开头,而7.5分的答案会把它延伸为“tend to get the better end of the deal”。
    • LRreward energy and flexibilityThis phrase personifies cities as actively 'rewarding' certain qualities, a more vivid collocation than the plain 'needs energy to deal with' used at 6.5.这个短语把城市拟人化,让它主动地“rewarding”(回报)某些特质,比6.5分使用的平实的“needs energy to deal with”更生动的搭配。
    • GRAthe long commutes, the crowded buildings, the constant change all suit someone who's still building a lifeThis sentence uses a three-item list as its grammatical subject, taking a plural verb 'suit', a more advanced and compact construction than the 6.5 version, which lists the demands and then separately describes the response. A 6.5 answer would keep the list and the response in two separate coordinated clauses.这句话用一个三项列表作为语法主语,搭配复数动词“suit”,比6.5版本(先列出要求,再分开描述应对方式)更高级、更紧凑。6.5分的答案会把列表和应对方式分放在两个独立的并列分句里。
    7.5 分

This reaches 7.5 through the idiomatic phrase 'get the better end of the deal' and the vivid collocation 'the relentless churn of change', which elevates the register beyond the plainer noun list used at 7.0.这篇答案通过地道的短语“get the better end of the deal”,以及生动的搭配“the relentless churn of change”,达到了7.5分的水平,后者把语域提升到了超越7.0分使用的更平实的名词列表的高度。

Younger people, on balance, tend to get the better end of the deal. Cities reward energy and flexibility, the long commutes, the crowded buildings, the relentless churn of change all suit someone still in the process of building a life. My grandmother, by contrast, has flatly rebuffed every suggestion of moving from Hue to Da Nang, even with better hospitals on offer here. Her entire world fits within a ten-minute walk, and that's precisely what she values about it. That said, cities can genuinely serve older people living alone well, given how close services and company sit. It really hinges on whether someone already has a strong local network or is still hunting for one.

    • FCYounger people, on balance, tend to get the better end of the deal. This opening uses the idiomatic phrase 'get the better end of the deal', a more vivid and figurative way of stating the position than the plainer fragment used at 7.0. A 6.5 answer opens with the flattest possible statement, 'I think cities are usually better for younger people'.这个开头用了地道的短语“get the better end of the deal”,比7.0分使用的更平实的片段是一种更生动、更具比喻性的方式来陈述立场。6.5分的答案会用最平淡的陈述开头,“I think cities are usually better for younger people”。
    • LRthe relentless churn of changeThis is a vivid, literary collocation ('relentless churn') describing constant change, considerably more distinctive than the plain 'constant change' used at 7.0 and 6.5.这是一个生动、具有文学色彩的搭配(“relentless churn”),用来描述持续不断的变化,比7.0分和6.5分使用的平实的“constant change”有特色得多。
    • GRAIt really hinges on whether someone already has a strong local network or is still hunting for one. This closing sentence uses the more precise verb 'hinges' instead of 'comes down to', plus the vivid verb 'hunting' instead of 'needs to find', a slightly more polished version of the 7.0 structure. A 6.5 answer would use the plainest possible closing, 'depends on whether someone already has friends and family nearby or not'.这句结尾用更精确的动词“hinges”取代了“comes down to”,再加上生动的动词“hunting”取代了“needs to find”,是7.0结构一个略微更精致的版本。6.5分的答案会用最平实的结尾,“depends on whether someone already has friends and family nearby or not”。

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain personal example and the simple closing summary 'So growth makes it easier to lose character, but it is not automatic', stated with no further reflection.这是一篇6.5分的答案,因为它的个人例子很平实,而且结尾的简单总结“So growth makes it easier to lose character, but it is not automatic”也是直接陈述,没有进一步的反思。

I mostly agree, and I have seen it happen myself. In the five years I have lived in Da Nang, the riverfront has filled up with tall glass buildings that could be in any city in Asia, and my own office is actually in one of them. When cities grow, they often get the same developers, the same shops, and it becomes expensive to keep things different. But I do not think it always has to happen. Places like old markets or local food streets can keep their character if the city protects them. Ha Noi, for example, is very big but still feels unique. So growth makes it easier to lose character, but it is not automatic.

    • FCSo growth makes it easier to lose character, but it is not automatic. This closing sentence states the conclusion plainly with the basic connector 'but'. A 7.0 answer would restate this in a shorter, more confident form with the hedge 'I'd say' inserted, and a 7.5 answer would drop the hedge entirely for an even more compact final statement.这句结尾用基础的连接词“but”平实地陈述了结论。7.0分的答案会用更短、更自信的形式重新表述,并插入缓和语“I'd say”,而7.5分的答案会完全去掉这个缓和语,给出一个更紧凑的最终陈述。
    • LRvery big but still feels uniqueThis is a plain adjective-based description with a basic connector. A 7.0 answer would use the more formal and confident 'is huge and still unmistakably itself', and a 7.5 answer would restructure this into 'for all its size, remains unmistakably itself'.这是一个平实的、以形容词为基础的描述,配上一个基础连接词。7.0分的答案会用更正式、更自信的“is huge and still unmistakably itself”,而7.5分的答案会把它重新构建成“for all its size, remains unmistakably itself”。
    • GRAthe riverfront has filled up with tall glass buildings that could be in any city in Asia, and my own office is actually in one of themThis sentence joins two clauses with 'and' in a fairly plain structure, adding the detail about the office as an afterthought. A 7.0 answer would use the more vivid verb 'belong to' instead of 'be in', and a 7.5 answer would use the striking verb 'sprouted' to describe the buildings appearing.这句话用“and”以一种相当平实的结构连接了两个分句,把关于办公室的细节作为事后补充加了进去。7.0分的答案会用更生动的动词“belong to”来取代“be in”,而7.5分的答案会用引人注目的动词“sprouted”来描述大楼的出现。
    7.0 分

This is a 7.0 answer because of the three-item asyndetic list 'the same developers, the same chains, the same solutions' and the closing parenthetical hedge 'I'd say' inserted mid-sentence.这是一篇7.0分的答案,因为它有一个三项的无连接词列表“the same developers, the same chains, the same solutions”,以及结尾插在句中的括注式缓和语“I'd say”。

I mostly agree, and I've watched it happen. In the five years I've lived in Da Nang, the riverfront has filled up with tall glass buildings that could belong to any city in Asia, my own office is in one of them, actually. Growth brings the same developers, the same chains, the same solutions, and difference gets expensive. But I don't think it's inevitable. The parts of a city that grow slowly, old markets, particular streets, local food, hold their character if a city decides to protect them. Hà Nội is huge and still unmistakably itself. So size makes losing character easier, I'd say, not automatic.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCSo size makes losing character easier, I'd say, not automatic. This closing sentence inserts the parenthetical hedge 'I'd say' mid-clause, interrupting the flow for a more natural, spoken rhythm than a flat statement. A 6.5 answer would state the same idea as a plain, uninterrupted sentence, 'So growth makes it easier to lose character, but it is not automatic', while a 7.5 answer drops the hedge for an even more compressed, confident version.这句结尾把括注式缓和语“I'd say”插在分句中间,打断了行文的流畅性,以求一种比平淡陈述更自然、更口语化的节奏。6.5分的答案会把同样的想法表述成一个平实、不间断的句子,“So growth makes it easier to lose character, but it is not automatic”,而7.5分的答案会去掉这个缓和语,给出一个更凝练、更自信的版本。
    • LRis huge and still unmistakably itselfThis phrase uses the more formal and confident adverb 'unmistakably' rather than the plainer 'still feels unique' used at 6.5.这个短语用了更正式、更自信的副词“unmistakably”,而不是6.5分使用的更平实的“still feels unique”。
    • GRAGrowth brings the same developers, the same chains, the same solutions, and difference gets expensive. This sentence uses a three-item asyndetic-style repeated list ('the same developers, the same chains, the same solutions') followed by a short, punchy result clause, a more advanced rhetorical structure than the plain listing sentence at 6.5. A 6.5 answer would state this idea with a simpler two-item list joined by 'and'.这句话用了一个三项的、无连接词重复的列表(“the same developers, the same chains, the same solutions”),后面跟着一个简短有力的结果分句,比6.5分平实的列举句更高级的修辞结构。6.5分的答案会用一个更简单的、由“and”连接的两项列表来陈述这个想法。
    7.5 分

This reaches 7.5 through the participial opener 'having watched it unfold firsthand' and the vivid verb 'sprouted', which personify observation and growth more vividly than the plainer verbs used at lower bands.这篇答案通过分词式的开头“having watched it unfold firsthand”,以及生动的动词“sprouted”,达到了7.5分的水平,这两者比低分答案使用的更平实的动词更生动地拟人化了“观察”和“生长”。

I mostly agree, having watched it unfold firsthand. Over the five years I've lived in Da Nang, the riverfront has sprouted tall glass buildings indistinguishable from any other city in Asia, my own office sits in one of them, fittingly enough. Growth tends to import the same developers, the same chains, the same off-the-shelf solutions, and difference becomes an expensive thing to preserve. Yet it isn't inevitable. The corners of a city that grow slowly, old markets, particular streets, local food, retain their character wherever a city actively chooses to protect them. Hà Nội, for all its size, remains unmistakably itself. So size makes losing character easier, not automatic.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI mostly agree, having watched it unfold firsthand. This opening uses a participial phrase ('having watched...') instead of a full finite clause, a more compact and literary construction than a coordinated sentence with 'and'. A 7.0 answer would use the fuller 'I mostly agree, and I've watched it happen', and a 6.5 answer would state this with the plainest coordinated structure.这个开头用了一个分词短语(“having watched...”),而不是一个完整的限定分句,比用“and”连接的并列句更紧凑、更具文学色彩。7.0分的答案会用更完整的“I mostly agree, and I've watched it happen”,而6.5分的答案会用最平实的并列结构来陈述。
    • LRsprouted tall glass buildingsThis is a vivid, unusual verb choice ('sprouted', typically used for plants) applied to buildings, considerably more distinctive than the plainer 'has filled up with' used at 7.0.这是一个生动、不寻常的动词选择(“sprouted”,通常用来形容植物生长),被用在了建筑物上,比7.0分使用的更平实的“has filled up with”有特色得多。
    • GRAHà Nội, for all its size, remains unmistakably itself. This sentence uses the concessive phrase 'for all its size' inserted between the subject and verb, a more compact and literary construction than the simple coordinated sentence 'is huge and still unmistakably itself' used at 7.0. A 6.5 answer would use the plainest connector, 'but', for the same contrast.这句话用了让步短语“for all its size”,插在主语和动词之间,比7.0分使用的简单并列句“is huge and still unmistakably itself”更紧凑、更具文学色彩。6.5分的答案会用最平实的连接词“but”来表达同样的对比。

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain listing structure introduced by 'Besides that' and the simple closing sentence explaining why local markets matter.这是一篇6.5分的答案,因为它用平实的“Besides that”引出列举结构,并以一句简单的结尾句解释了本地市场为何重要。

I think we should start with small things that people experience every day. For example, my daily ride along the Han River is much better on parts with shade and a good pavement, and this is much cheaper to fix than building a new metro line. Besides that, cities need public transport that people actually want to use instead of driving, affordable housing near workplaces, and green spaces close to home instead of just one big park far away. I would also say cities should keep local markets alive, because buying breakfast from someone who knows you makes a city feel more liveable.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCBesides that, cities need public transport that people actually want to use instead of driving, affordable housing near workplaces, and green spaces close to home instead of just one big park far away. This long sentence lists three needs joined by commas using the plain connector 'Besides that', in a fairly basic list structure. A 7.0 answer would replace this connector with the more natural 'Beyond that, the big levers are...', and a 7.5 answer would use the more vivid 'the real levers are...'.这句长句用平实的连接词“Besides that”,通过逗号列出了三项需求,是一种相当基础的列表结构。7.0分的答案会用更自然的“Beyond that, the big levers are...”取代这个连接词,而7.5分的答案会用更生动的“the real levers are...”。
    • LRmuch cheaper to fixThis is a plain, basic comparative phrase describing cost. A 7.0 answer would use the more natural 'a cheap fix compared with a new metro line', and a 7.5 answer would restructure the whole sentence around the vivid verb 'swings from... to'.这是一个平实、基础的比较性短语,用来描述成本。7.0分的答案会用更自然的“a cheap fix compared with a new metro line”,而7.5分的答案会围绕生动的动词“swings from... to”重新构建整个句子。
    • GRAmy daily ride along the Han River is much better on parts with shade and a good pavementThis sentence is a simple comparative statement with plain adjectives. A 7.0 answer would restructure this into a parallel contrastive sentence using ellipsis, 'bearable on the stretches with shade... and miserable on the stretches without', and a 7.5 answer would compress this further using the verb 'swings' to link both extremes in one clause.这句话是一个简单的比较陈述,使用平实的形容词。7.0分的答案会用省略句法把它重新构建成一个并列对比句,“bearable on the stretches with shade... and miserable on the stretches without”,而7.5分的答案会用动词“swings”把这两个极端连接在一个分句里,进一步压缩。
    7.0 分

This is a 7.0 answer because of the parallel contrastive structure 'bearable on the stretches with shade... and pretty miserable on the stretches without', using ellipsis instead of repeating the noun.这是一篇7.0分的答案,因为它有一个并列对比结构“bearable on the stretches with shade... and pretty miserable on the stretches without”,用了省略句法,而不是重复名词。

Start with the small things people touch every day, I'd say. My commute along the Han River is bearable on the stretches with shade and a proper pavement and pretty miserable on the stretches without, and that's a cheap fix compared with a new metro line. Beyond that, the big levers are public transport that people actually prefer to driving, housing that ordinary workers can afford near where they work, and green space within walking distance rather than in one big park across town. I'd also argue for keeping neighbourhood markets alive. A city where you can buy breakfast from someone who knows your name feels liveable in a way that infrastructure alone can't replace.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCI'd also argue for keeping neighbourhood markets alive. This sentence uses the natural framing verb 'argue for' rather than the plainer 'I would also say', a slightly more assertive and fluent way of introducing a personal recommendation. A 6.5 answer would use the flatter 'I would also say cities should keep local markets alive'.这句话用了自然的框架动词“argue for”,而不是更平实的“I would also say”,是一种略微更坚定、更流畅的方式来引出个人建议。6.5分的答案会用更平淡的“I would also say cities should keep local markets alive”。
    • LRthe big leversThis is a moderately abstract, figurative noun phrase describing the main policy tools, more distinctive than the plain listing structure used at 6.5 with no such organising metaphor.这是一个相当抽象、具有比喻色彩的名词短语,用来描述主要的政策工具,比6.5分使用的、没有这种组织性隐喻的平实列举结构更有特色。
    • GRAMy commute along the Han River is bearable on the stretches with shade and a proper pavement and pretty miserable on the stretches withoutThis sentence uses ellipsis, dropping the repeated noun 'stretches' in the second half, a more compact and fluent parallel structure than the plain single comparative sentence at 6.5. A 6.5 answer would state this as a single simple comparative sentence without the parallel construction.这句话用了省略句法,在后半部分省略了重复的名词“stretches”,比6.5分平实的单一比较句更紧凑、更流畅的并列结构。6.5分的答案会把它表述为一个简单的比较句,没有这种并列结构。
    7.5 分

This reaches 7.5 through the vivid noun phrase 'the small, everyday frictions' and the compressed verb 'swings from... to', which replaces the parallel ellipsis structure of the 7.0 answer with an even tighter single-verb construction.这篇答案通过生动的名词短语“the small, everyday frictions”,以及凝练的动词“swings from... to”,达到了7.5分的水平,后者用一个更紧凑的单动词结构取代了7.0答案的并列省略结构。

Start with the small, everyday frictions people actually touch, I'd argue, not the grand projects. My commute along the Han River swings from perfectly bearable on shaded, well-paved stretches to genuinely miserable where those things vanish, and fixing that costs a fraction of a new metro line. Beyond that, the real levers are public transport people genuinely prefer over driving, housing ordinary workers can afford near their jobs, and green space within walking distance rather than concentrated in one distant park. I'd also make the case for keeping neighbourhood markets alive. A city where you can buy breakfast from someone who knows your name is liveable in a way no amount of infrastructure can substitute for.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCStart with the small, everyday frictions people actually touch, I'd argue, not the grand projects. This opening adds the contrastive tag 'not the grand projects' after the parenthetical 'I'd argue', sharpening the claim with an explicit contrast, a more assertive move than the plainer opener at 7.0. A 6.5 answer opens with the flattest possible framing, 'I think we should start with small things that people experience every day'.这个开头在插入语“I'd argue”之后加上了对比性的标签“not the grand projects”,用一个明确的对比让这个论断更加犀利,比7.0分更平实的开头更坚定。6.5分的答案会用最平淡的框架开头,“I think we should start with small things that people experience every day”。
    • LRthe small, everyday frictionsThis is a vivid, slightly abstract noun phrase ('frictions') used metaphorically for small daily annoyances, more distinctive than the plainer 'small things people touch every day' used at 7.0 and 6.5.这是一个生动、略带抽象意味的名词短语(“frictions”),被隐喻性地用来指代日常的小烦恼,比7.0分和6.5分使用的更平实的“small things people touch every day”更有特色。
    • GRAMy commute along the Han River swings from perfectly bearable on shaded, well-paved stretches to genuinely miserable where those things vanishThis sentence uses the single vivid verb 'swings from...to' to compress the contrast into one clause, instead of the parallel ellipsis structure with two separate adjective phrases used at 7.0. A 6.5 answer would use the plainest single comparative sentence with no such compression.这句话用了单一生动的动词“swings from...to”,把对比压缩进了一个分句里,而不是像7.0分那样使用两个独立形容词短语的并列省略结构。6.5分的答案会用最平实的单一比较句,没有这种压缩。

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain conditional framing 'but only if the people moving bring something useful with them' and the simple closing summary 'So it depends on whether people connect with the place or just use it'.这是一篇6.5分的答案,因为它平实的条件式框架“but only if the people moving bring something useful with them”,以及简单的结尾总结“So it depends on whether people connect with the place or just use it”。

I think it can benefit society, but only if the people moving bring something useful with them. For example, a designer I used to work with moved back to his family's farm in Quang Nam, and instead of just growing peppers, he built an online business and now gives jobs to six people from the village. That is a real benefit because skills and money go out to the countryside. But if people move just to escape the city and still work remotely for city companies, it might only make house prices go up without giving much back. So it depends on whether people connect with the place or just use it.

    • FCSo it depends on whether people connect with the place or just use it.This closing sentence uses the plain connector 'So' before a basic 'whether...or' contrast. A 7.0 answer would restate this with the more precise 'the movement itself is neutral; what matters is whether the newcomers connect with the place or just consume it', and a 7.5 answer would use the stronger verb 'engage with' instead of 'connect with'.这句结尾用了平实的连接词“So”,后面跟着一个基础的“whether...or”对比。7.0分的答案会用更精确的“the movement itself is neutral; what matters is whether the newcomers connect with the place or just consume it”来重新表述,而7.5分的答案会用更有力的动词“engage with”来取代“connect with”。

A 7.0 answer would use the more standard 'employs', and a 7.5 answer keeps this same precise verb within a more compressed sentence.这是一个平实、基础的动词短语,用来描述创造就业,没有任何更精确或更正式的替代表达。7.0分的答案会用更标准的“employs”,而7.5分的答案在一个更凝练的句子里保留了同一个精确的动词。
    • GRAinstead of just growing peppers, he built an online business and now gives jobs to six people from the villageThis sentence uses the subordinate contrastive phrase 'instead of' followed by two coordinated clauses joined with 'and', in a fairly plain structure. A 7.0 answer would use the more precise verb 'employs' in place of 'gives jobs to', and a 7.5 answer would restructure the ending into an appositive summary phrase.这句话用从属对比短语“instead of”,后面跟着两个用“and”连接的并列分句,是一种相当平实的结构。7.0分的答案会用更精确的动词“employs”来取代“gives jobs to”,而7.5分的答案会把结尾重新构建成一个同位语式的总结短语。
    7.0 分

This is a 7.0 answer because of the compact appositive summary 'That's a real benefit, skills and money flowing outward' and the closing semicolon-linked reflective sentence about the movement being 'neutral'.这是一篇7.0分的答案,因为它有一个紧凑的同位语式总结“That's a real benefit, skills and money flowing outward”,以及结尾用分号连接的、关于搬迁“neutral”(中性)的反思句。

It can, if the people moving bring something with them, I'd say. A designer I used to work with moved back to his family's farm in Quảng Nam, and instead of just growing peppers he built an online brand and now employs six people from the village. That's a real benefit, skills and money flowing outward. But if people move to the countryside purely to escape and keep working remotely for city companies, the local area just gets higher house prices and not much else. So the movement itself is neutral; what matters is whether the newcomers connect with the place or just consume it.

    • FCSo the movement itself is neutral; what matters is whether the newcomers connect with the place or just consume it.This closing sentence uses a semicolon to join a short evaluative claim with a cleft explanation, a more sophisticated and reflective structure than a flat 'So it depends on' sentence. A 6.5 answer would state this more simply as 'So it depends on whether people connect with the place or just use it', with no semicolon or reflective framing.这句结尾用了一个分号,把一个简短的评价性论断和一个强调句式的解释连接起来,比一个平淡的“So it depends on”句子更高明、更具反思性。6.5分的答案会更简单地陈述为“So it depends on whether people connect with the place or just use it”,没有分号或反思性框架。
    • LRskills and money flowing outwardThis is an appositive noun phrase using the participle 'flowing', a more compact and vivid image than the plain causal clause 'because skills and money go out to the countryside' used at 6.5.这是一个使用分词“flowing”的同位语名词短语,比6.5分使用的平实的因果分句“because skills and money go out to the countryside”更紧凑、更生动的意象。
    • GRAThat's a real benefit, skills and money flowing outward. This sentence attaches an absolute construction (noun plus participle, 'skills and money flowing outward') after a comma, standing in for a full finite clause, a more compact and flexible structure than the plain causal sentence at 6.5. A 6.5 answer would use the finite clause 'That is a real benefit because skills and money go out to the countryside'.这句话在逗号之后附加了一个独立结构(名词加分词,“skills and money flowing outward”),代替了一个完整的限定分句,比6.5分平实的因果句更紧凑、更灵活。6.5分的答案会用限定分句“That is a real benefit because skills and money go out to the countryside”。
    7.5 分

This reaches 7.5 through the more formal opening connector 'provided' and the compressed appositive closing 'instead of just in', which sharpens the image of outward flow beyond the plainer version at 7.0.这篇答案通过更正式的开头连接词“provided”,以及凝练的同位语式收尾“instead of just in”,达到了7.5分的水平,后者让“向外流动”这个意象比7.0分更平实的版本更加犀利。

It can, provided the people moving actually bring something with them. A designer I once worked with moved back to his family's farm in Quảng Nam, and rather than simply growing peppers, he built an online brand that now employs six people from the village, a genuine benefit, skills and money flowing outward instead of just in. But if people relocate purely to escape while still working remotely for city companies, the local area is often left with little more than inflated house prices. So the movement itself is neutral; what actually matters is whether the newcomers engage with the place or merely consume it.

    为什么是这个分数

    • FCIt can, provided the people moving actually bring something with them. This opening uses the more formal conditional connector 'provided' instead of the plainer 'if' used at lower bands, a slightly more sophisticated register choice. A 7.0 answer uses the plainer 'if', and a 6.5 answer states the same idea as a separate 'but only if' clause.这个开头用了更正式的条件连接词“provided”,而不是低分答案使用的更平实的“if”,是一个略微更高明的语域选择。7.0分的答案用更平实的“if”,而6.5分的答案把同样的想法表述成一个独立的“but only if”分句。
    • LRskills and money flowing outward instead of just inThis phrase adds the precise contrastive tag 'instead of just in' to the appositive image used at 7.0, sharpening the direction of the flow with more specific, compact wording.这个短语在7.0分使用的同位语意象上加上了精确的对比标签“instead of just in”,用更具体、更紧凑的措辞让这股流动的方向更加犀利。
    • GRAthe local area is often left with little more than inflated house pricesThis sentence uses the passive construction 'is often left with' plus the idiom 'little more than', a more literary and compact way of stating the negative outcome than the plainer active sentence at 7.0. A 6.5 answer would use the simplest active construction, 'it might only make house prices go up without giving much back'.这句话用了被动结构“is often left with”加上习语“little more than”,比7.0分更平实的主动句是一种更具文学色彩、更紧凑的方式来陈述这个负面结果。6.5分的答案会用最简单的主动结构,“it might only make house prices go up without giving much back”。
  9. 9. Do you think the problems that exist in large cities will ever be solved?

    6.5 分

This is a 6.5 answer because of its plain cause-and-effect explanation about flooding and the simple closing statement 'I think the real goal should be managing these problems well, not making a perfect city'.这是一篇6.5分的答案,因为它关于洪水的因果解释很平实,而且结尾的简单陈述“I think the real goal should be managing these problems well, not making a perfect city”也很简单。

I think some problems will be solved, but new ones will also appear. For example, Da Nang floods every October, even though the city has built many drainage projects, because they keep covering the land that used to absorb the rain water with buildings. In some wealthy cities, problems like air pollution and traffic have already been solved, so I think these problems can be solved with enough money and effort. But cities are always full of people wanting the same space, so this kind of problem will probably never completely go away. I think the real goal should be managing these problems well, not making a perfect city.

    • FCI think the real goal should be managing these problems well, not making a perfect city. This closing sentence states the conclusion plainly using the basic modal 'should be', without any more idiomatic or reflective phrasing. A 7.0 answer would restate this as 'I think the realistic goal is managing problems well, not chasing a finished, problem-free city', and a 7.5 answer would add the reflective closing tag 'that will never actually arrive'.这句结尾用基础的情态结构“should be”平实地陈述了结论,没有任何更地道或更具反思性的措辞。7.0分的答案会重新表述为“I think the realistic goal is managing problems well, not chasing a finished, problem-free city”,而7.5分的答案会加上反思性的结尾标签“that will never actually arrive”。
    • LRcovering the landThis is a plain, literal verb phrase describing urban development, without any more vivid or specific wording. A 7.0 answer would use the more natural 'paving over the land', and a 7.5 answer keeps this same vivid verb within a more compressed sentence.这是一个平实、直白的动词短语,用来描述城市开发,没有任何更生动或更具体的措辞。7.0分的答案会用更自然的“paving over the land”,而7.5分的答案在一个更凝练的句子里保留了同一个生动的动词。
    • GRAthey keep covering the land that used to absorb the rain water with buildingsThis sentence uses a relative clause ('that used to absorb the rain water') attached to a fairly plain main clause. A 7.0 answer would restructure this with the more natural verb phrase 'paving over the land that used to absorb the water', and a 7.5 answer would add the further vivid reflective clause 'we're generating the problem faster than we're solving it'.这句话用了一个定语从句(“that used to absorb the rain water”),附加在一个相当平实的主句上。7.0分的答案会用更自然的动词短语“paving over the land that used to absorb the water”来重新构建,而7.5分的答案会加上更进一步的生动反思性分句“we're generating the problem faster than we're solving it”。
    7.0 分

This is a 7.0 answer because of the reflective aside 'we're basically creating the problem faster than we fix it' and the concessive clause 'no matter how many drainage projects get announced', which adds nuance beyond a flat statement.这是一篇7.0分的答案,因为它有一个反思性的插入语“we're basically creating the problem faster than we fix it”,以及一个让步分句“no matter how many drainage projects get announced”,在平淡的陈述之上增添了细腻感。

Some will, some won't, and new ones will appear in their place, I'd say. Da Nang floods every October no matter how many drainage projects get announced, partly because the city keeps paving over the land that used to absorb the water, we're basically creating the problem faster than we fix it. Air quality and traffic have been solved in a few wealthy cities, though, so they're clearly solvable with enough money and political will. But cities are essentially too many people wanting the same space, and that tension never fully goes away. I think the realistic goal is managing problems well, not chasing a finished, problem-free city.

    • FCwe're basically creating the problem faster than we fix itThis reflective aside, attached after a comma with no connector, offers a genuine interpretive observation rather than simply stating the cause and effect. A 6.5 answer would not attempt this kind of reflective summary, stopping instead at the plain causal explanation about covering land with buildings.这个反思性的插入语,附加在一个逗号之后,没有使用连接词,提供了一个真正具有解读性的观察,而不只是陈述因果关系。6.5分的答案不会尝试这种反思性的总结,而是止步于关于“用建筑覆盖土地”的平实因果解释。
    • LRpaving over the landThis phrasal verb is a more natural, idiomatic collocation than the plain 'covering the land' used at 6.5, specifically evoking the image of concrete over soil.这个短语动词是一个比6.5分使用的平实的“covering the land”更自然、更地道的搭配,专门唤起了“水泥覆盖土壤”的意象。
    • GRADa Nang floods every October no matter how many drainage projects get announcedThis sentence uses a concessive clause introduced by 'no matter how many', a more advanced construction than the plain 'even though' clause used at 6.5. A 6.5 answer would use the simpler subordinator 'even though' instead of this more idiomatic concessive structure.这句话用了一个由“no matter how many”引出的让步分句,比6.5分使用的平实的“even though”分句更高级。6.5分的答案会用更简单的从属连词“even though”,而不是这种更地道的让步结构。
    7.5 分

This reaches 7.5 through the vivid opening image 'fresh ones will spring up to fill the gap' and the closing tag 'that will never actually arrive', a genuinely reflective addition beyond the plainer statement at 7.0.这篇答案通过生动的开头意象“fresh ones will spring up to fill the gap”,以及结尾标签“that will never actually arrive”,达到了7.5分的水平,后者是一个比7.0分更平实的陈述更具真正反思性的补充。

Some will, some won't, and fresh ones will spring up to fill the gap. Da Nang floods every October regardless of how many drainage projects get announced, largely because the city keeps paving over the very land that once soaked up the rain, we're generating the problem faster than we're solving it. Air quality and traffic, though, have been tamed in a handful of wealthy cities, which suggests they're solvable given enough money and political will. But cities are, at bottom, too many people competing for the same patch of ground, and that tension never fully dissolves. The realistic goal, I'd argue, is managing problems well rather than chasing some finished, problem-free city that will never actually arrive.

    • FCSome will, some won't, and fresh ones will spring up to fill the gap. This opening uses the vivid idiom 'spring up to fill the gap' rather than the plainer 'appear in their place' used at 7.0, giving the sentence a more image-based, confident register from the very start.这个开头用了生动的习语“spring up to fill the gap”,而不是7.0分使用的更平实的“appear in their place”,从一开始就为句子赋予了更具画面感、更自信的语域。
    • LRtamed in a handful of wealthy citiesThis is a vivid, less-common verb choice ('tamed') applied to abstract problems like air quality and traffic, considerably more distinctive than the plain 'solved' used at both 6.5 and 7.0.这是一个生动、不那么常见的动词选择(“tamed”,驯服),被用在了空气质量和交通这样的抽象问题上,比6.5分和7.0分都使用的平实的“solved”有特色得多。
    • GRAcities are, at bottom, too many people competing for the same patch of groundThis sentence uses a copular structure with a noun phrase as the predicate and the parenthetical phrase 'at bottom' inserted mid-clause, a more literary and compact construction than the plainer 'cities are essentially too many people wanting the same space' used at 7.0. A 6.5 answer would state this idea in an entirely separate, plainer sentence.这句话用了一个系动词结构,以名词短语作表语,并在分句中间插入了括注式短语“at bottom”,比7.0分使用的更平实的“cities are essentially too many people wanting the same space”更具文学色彩、更紧凑。6.5分的答案会用一个完全独立、更平实的句子来陈述这个想法。
