Local Gyms and Fitness Centres

A. Right Now Fitness: Part of the Right Now chain of gyms across the country. Rates differ depending on the package you sign up to, but if you are willing to lock yourself in to monthly payments over a three-year period, it is less expensive but not cheap. There is a massive choice in courses you can do from aerobics, spinning and pilates to weightlifting, boxing and step. There's even a 25 metre swimming pool! B. Cross Fit Capital: This is the centre for the super fit only. Cross fit entails short intensive sessions with weights, floor exercises and aerobic exercise. You can stay in shape by doing these 30-minute training sessions a few times a week. It's not for the faint-hearted, it will be the toughest thirty minutes you have ever spent, but it really is an effective way to train if you are a busy person. C. Barton's Gym and Club: This elite club has restricted membership and very high fees. The facilities are second-to-none. It has most of the usual fitness courses, plus an on-site physiotherapist and doctor. You can come here after work for a work out, and then relax in the club members' lounge, which is a bar and dining room. D. Lockwood Health and Fitness Centre: This gym is an initiative of Lockwood City Council. It has low fees and an unrestricted entry policy. The equipment is a little out-of-date and does not always work, but if you just want to work out on your own or do the odd aerobics class, this might be the gym for you. E. Blade's Runners: This is not technically a gym, but we thought it was worth mentioning. Jack Blade, Olympic silver medallist sprinter, charges a daily fee for joining his running group at City Park every Saturday morning. It's fun to do and hundreds of people sign up every week. It's a great place to meet other runners, and Jack is always there to give out advice and tell stories of his old running days.

      Protect Yourself Against Job Scams

With the rise of online recruitment, job scams have become increasingly sophisticated. Protect yourself by recognising warning signs and understanding how legitimate employers operate. 1. Beware of Upfront Payments: No genuine employer will ask you to pay for training, background checks, or uniforms before you start the job. Scammers may ask for bank transfers or gift cards as a "registration fee." 2. Too Good to Be True Offers: Be cautious of ads offering very high salaries for minimal work or flexible positions that require no qualifications. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. 3. Poor Communication: Fraudulent employers often use generic email addresses (like Gmail or Yahoo) and have poor grammar or unprofessional language in their messages. Authentic companies usually contact you via official domain emails. 4. No Interview Required: Be skeptical of jobs that promise instant hiring without any interview or proper selection process. Reputable employers always want to speak to or meet potential candidates before offering a role. 5. Check Company Credentials: Always research the company's website, address, and contact information. Cross-check job listings with the company's official site. Use employment websites that verify employers. 6. Report Suspicious Ads: If you come across a suspected scam, report it to job boards and local authorities. Staying vigilant helps protect not just you, but other job seekers as well.

        GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE IN RETAIL

Without customers, your retail business would not exist. It stands to reason, therefore, that how you treat your customers has a direct impact on your profit margins. Some customers just want to browse and not be bothered by sales staff. Try to be sensitive to how much help a customer wants; be proactive in offering help without being annoying. Suggest a product that naturally accompanies what the customer is considering or point out products for which there are special offers, but don't pressure a customer into buying an item they don't want. Build up a comprehensive knowledge of all the products in your shop, including the pros and cons of products that are alike, but that have been produced under a range of brand names. If you have run out of a particular item, make sure you know when the next orders are coming in. Negativity can put customers off instantly. If a customer asks a question to which the answer is 'no,' do not just leave it at that — follow it with a positive, for example: 'we're expecting more of that product in on Tuesday'. Meanwhile, if you see a product in the wrong place on a shelf, don't ignore it — put it back where it belongs. This attention to presentation keeps the shop tidy, giving the right impression to your customers. Likewise, if you notice a fault with a product, remove it and replace it with another. When necessary, be discreet. For example, if the customer's credit card is declined at the till, keep your voice down and enquire about an alternative payment method quietly so that the customer doesn't feel humiliated. If they experience uncomfortable emotions in your shop, it's unlikely that they'll come back. Finally, good manners are probably the most important aspect of dealing with customers. Treat each person with respect at all times, even when you are faced with rudeness. Being discourteous yourself will only add more fuel to the fire. Build a reputation for polite, helpful staff and you'll find that customers not only keep giving you their custom, but also tell their friends about you.

          Australia struggling with Skin Cancers

Skin cancer, malignancy in the skin, is the most common of all cancers. There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma, the most common type, along with melanoma, develops in the basal, or bottom layer of the epidermis, the top layer of skin. Squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common type, develops in the upper layers of the epidermis. The American Cancer Society estimates that basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers account for more than 1.3 million new cases each year, but for only 1,900 deaths in the United States. The third type of skin cancer is melanoma. It develops in the melanocytes, or pigment cells, which are found throughout the basal layer. Melanoma is the most lethal type of skin cancer and is responsible for about three-quarters of all skin cancer deaths. Two out of three Australians will develop skin cancer, and an estimated 1,000 die from it each year. The main risk factors for skin cancer are ultraviolet radiation exposure and skin type. People who burn or freckle rather than tanning and have blond or red hair have higher risk. However, exposure also can cause skin cancers among people with darker skin. The southern United States has very high rates for the same reason. Israel also has a skin cancer problem among immigrants of European background. The rates aren't as high as in Australia because there are fewer Israelis with very light complexions. Rates in Scandinavia and Israel are similar because most Scandinavians have a more susceptible skin type, even though they are exposed to less UV radiation at home. Because of Australia's high rate of skin cancer, the Anti-Cancer Council (ACC) of Victoria, Australia has started perhaps the most comprehensive public skin cancer education program in the world. The campaign's messages include a television ad called "Timebomb," in which a doctor removes a skin cancer nodule that has spread to the lymph node in a patient's underarm. The aim of the ad is to show that sunburn can cause far greater damage below the skin's surface than above it and may plant a skin cancer "Timebomb" that will explode some later time. In addition to the media campaign, a program called "SunSmart" works with schools to teach children about the dangers of the sun. It's known that 80% of lifetime sun exposure is acquired before age 18. This makes taking sensible precautions in childhood and adolescence the prime preventive measure. Eighty percent of all primary schools in the state of Victoria have a "no hat, play in the shade" policy which means the kids cannot go outdoors unless they're wearing a hat. The ACC has adapted another public education campaign originally developed in Australia and the United States. The "Slip! Slop! Slap" program offers this message to put on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, and slap on a hat to protect your skin. Other recommendations included in this campaign are: skin exposure should be minimized between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm, when the sun is at its strongest; eye protection is necessary; and sunscreen should be applied at least 15 minutes before starting any outdoor work and should then be re-applied every 2 hours. Research is another key function of the Victoria Anti-Cancer Council. There are a number of Australian agencies and experts working in education and research domestically and worldwide. Earlier this year, for example, the Australian Cancer Society released findings from a study that many Australians still mistakenly assume sunscreen will completely protect them from sunburn and skin cancer. This misconception means they use sunscreen to prolong their time in the sun, increasing their risk of developing melanoma. Later, a leading Australian cancer specialist suggested replacing sun protection factor numbers on sunscreen products with descriptions of the level of protection, such as "low" or "ultra-high." This could reduce confusion and encourage people to use sunscreens more appropriately. Although the Australian population is very well-informed in relation to the link between sun exposure and skin cancer, people get bored with hearing the same message again and again, so experts have to try and re-invent and recreate the prevention message on an ongoing basis. They are now attempting to influence policies in society in general to help to reduce sun exposure. For example, employers can help prevent skin cancer by rotating workers' tasks so their time in the sun is minimized; elected safety and health representatives should be consulted in formulating a policy; and new buildings need to have a certain number of car parking spaces for their own. Along those same lines, new buildings also need to have an appropriate amount of shade provided so that the avoidance of exposure to the sun is easier.
