Section 2: Sustainable Fashion — Passage
The fashion industry has long been criticised for its environmental impact. Mass production, fast fashion, and excessive waste have made clothing one of the most polluting sectors globally.
However, a shift is underway as more consumers and brands move toward sustainable fashion.
Sustainable fashion refers to clothing that is produced, marketed, and consumed in environmentally and socially responsible ways. This includes using organic or recycled materials, ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions for garment workers, and designing products to last longer. Some companies are even introducing "take-back" programs that allow customers to return old clothing for recycling.
Brands like Patagonia, Stella McCartney, and Eileen Fisher have become industry leaders in sustainability. They promote transparency in their supply chains, avoiding harmful chemicals and reducing carbon emissions. Meanwhile, smaller independent labels are also rising, often relying on handmade items and ethical sourcing.
Consumers play a crucial role in this movement. People are encouraged to buy less, choose higher-quality garments, and avoid discarding clothes unnecessarily. Thrift stores, clothing swaps, and rental fashion are also gaining popularity. According to recent studies, extending the life of a garment by just nine months can reduce its environmental footprint by 30%. Despite the progress, challenges remain. Sustainable materials can be expensive, and greenwashing - when companies falsely claim to be eco-friendly-is a growing concern. As awareness spreads, watchdog organisations and third-party certifications are working to hold companies accountable.
Sustainable fashion is not a short-term trend but a necessary transformation. As environmental pressures rise, the fashion industry must adapt to a future where style and responsibility coexist.

Section 3: Llewyn — The Troubadour of a Lost Age (Passage)
A
Llewyn, a name that may not echo widely in history books, was a prominent figure in early 14th-century Wales. Though his songs were never officially recorded in manuscripts, they lived on through oral tradition and local folklore. Llewyn was known as a wandering bard—a troubadour of sorts—who sang of peasant struggles, natural beauty, and quiet rebellion against social norms. In a time when literacy was reserved for the elite and art was often confined to royal courts, Llewyn stood apart by singing directly to the people.
B
According to Welsh historians, Llewyn travelled from village to village, performing in marketplaces, taverns, and during harvest celebrations. Unlike other bards who sought the favour of nobles, Llewyn deliberately avoided aristocratic patronage. His goal was not fame or riches, but connection. His performances were informal, often involving simple stringed instruments and communal singing. Witness accounts describe Llewyn as a gentle presence with a gift for weaving melody and storytelling into one seamless art.
C
Llewyn's songs often reflected the hardships of rural life: failed crops, family loss, and unyielding taxation. However, he did not focus solely on grief. Many of his compositions were uplifting, offering hope and urging solidarity among villagers. His most celebrated piece, "The Oak Does Not Bend," is believed to be a subtle protest song encouraging resilience in the face of foreign rule, at a time when England exerted heavy influence over Welsh lands.
D
While there are no surviving writings from Llewyn himself, references to him appear in various 15th-century poems and letters. Some scholars believe that he influenced later Welsh poets, including Dafydd ap Gwilym, through both melody and metaphor. Modern-day folk musicians in Wales have also cited Llewyn as a spiritual inspiration, though many of the tunes attributed to him have undergone significant evolution.
E
One fascinating theory is that Llewyn may have had ties to a clandestine movement promoting Welsh cultural identity. Though unproven, some accounts claim he was involved in preserving the Welsh language through his songs at a time when English dominance threatened to erode native traditions. This would explain the enduring power of his melodies and why many of his lyrics were memorized and passed down through generations.
F
Today, Llewyn remains an enigma—half history, half legend. Schools in some parts of Wales teach students about his legacy, and each spring, a local festival known as "The Llewyn Gathering" is held in the town of Machynlleth. Musicians, historians, and poets come together to celebrate the enduring themes of his life's work: empathy, community, and resistance. For many, Llewyn represents more than just a singer—he is a symbol of the soul of Welsh folk culture.
