Reading Passage 1 — Procedures for Modern Day Food Courts
A. Fighting back against the growing popularity in online shopping, malls are attracting customers to physically come to them for more than the shopping experience itself. The attraction of great food to be tried is one way of doing so.
B. Food Courts are almost always located on the top floor of the mall, accessed by elevators and stairwells. From time to time however, these may be located in the basement of the shopping centre.
C. These modern eating areas are typically an open-plan layout whereby the multitude of food outlets are located along the outside walls of a large open space, with plentiful tables and chairs placed in the spacious interior.
D. The food choices range from Korean barbecue bars to Japanese sushi stalls, from boiled dumplings and steamed filled buns to bubbling hot pots and soup vendors. More often than not nowadays, Western style options are available too offering sumptuous steaks.
E. The process of purchasing your meal is straightforward. Firstly, purchase a food card from the cashier topped up with the amount of money you intend to spend and then make your order directly at the specific food vendor who will swipe your card. Wait patiently, then they will shout out your receipt number and you collect the delicious delights cooked up from the vendor once again.
F. Foreign visitors and out-of-town day-trippers are easily drawn to these eating establishments for a couple of reasons; firstly being they offer up a wide range of eating options to try at affordable prices; and secondly that they are extremely simple to use for those who cannot comprehend the local language.
G. There may be one or two drawbacks of using these places of course; one of which being they are often bustling and boisterous places packed with numerous diners; secondly, food hygiene cannot always be guaranteed.
H. Overall, it is safe to say that the benefits of these food courts far outweigh some potential and occasional drawbacks, and that the popularity of these eating establishments are certain to grow in the future.

Reading Passage 2 — Taking a Holiday in Canada - on a Budget
Canada is often considered to be an expensive place to travel because of the climate, vast distances and high cost of domestic travel, but this doesn't have to be the case. Below are some tips to help plan a Canadian trip that won't break the bank.
Getting around
• Buses and trains in Canada are reliable but can be expensive and limit where you are able to go. One option for travelling between and within cities is a rideshare scheme. Locals with empty seats in their cars will take you from A to B for a fee.
• If you want to hire a car, don't assume you have to go with a big company. There are lesser-known companies that hire out older cars, which are still reliable. Either way, there are savings to be had when you book outside the peak months (May, June and September). Be aware of add-on costs, however. The base rate does not generally include car insurance or unlimited kilometres.
• If your dates are flexible, you may make great savings with a campervan relocation deal. These deals come up when a rental company needs a vehicle moved from one office to another one way for example, Halifax to Montreal. An online search will quickly reveal such opportunities, though not often far in advance.
Activities
• National parks offer a great array of choices for those who love breathtaking scenery and outdoor activities. If you like kayaking, paddle boarding or mountain biking, rent the gear outside of national parks for more budget-friendly options. For example, the University of Calgary rent summer and winter camping gear and equipment for outdoor activities.
• Doing some online research before your trip will save both time and money when you get there.
Food
• When going from a big city to the Rocky Mountains, stock up on supplies from a major supermarket first. Most of the larger supermarket chains have many options for prepared food and some will even heat it up for you in the deli section.
• Most city parks and campsites have barbecue grills that can be used by anyone. You only need to buy aluminium trays and whatever food you would like to grill.
Questions 8-14: True/False/Not Given
Do the following statements agree with the information given in the text. TRUE - if the statement is true. FALSE - if the statement is false. NOT GIVEN - if the information is not given in the text.
- 8
Train and bus fares cost the same amount.

Fees for hire cars usually cover the cost of insuring the vehicle.
- 10
Deals for relocating vehicles are only in major cities.
- 11
Deals to relocate vehicles tend to come up close to the time of departure.
- 12
National parks are the cheapest option for hiring outdoor equipment.
- 13
Warm food is available at some supermarkets.
- 14
Public parks often have facilities for barbecue.
Reading Passage 3 — ESITO Dress Code
The personal appearance of office workers and employees who have regular contact with the public is laid out in the company dress code. In brief, the code requires all employees to observe the following:
• Clean, pressed, properly fitting business casual attire is appropriate.
• Hair should be clean, combed and neatly arranged. Long hair is acceptable if it is tied back.
• Moustaches and beards should be neatly trimmed.
• Good personal hygiene must be maintained.
• Use perfume or cologne in small quantities or not at all (some people are allergic to various scents).
The personal appearance of employees who do not regularly meet the public is to be decided by the requirements of safety, comfort and supervisor approval. Even so, because all employees are a representative of the company, they should be as neat and business-like as working conditions permit.
The following are some examples of inappropriate dress at all times:
• Faded and/or tattered/torn jeans; t-shirts displaying advertising or writing.
• Faded overalls, cotton/fleece pants and jogging suits, shorts, tank tops or recreational attire.
• Clothing revealing bare backs, midriffs or shoulders; or any revealing clothing.
Casual Fridays: The Company has designated Fridays as casual days. Some clothing is still considered inappropriate even on casual days. Employees are requested to use good sense in this regard.
Bad weather days: The Company understands that inclement weather conditions can require different attire for the day. Use good judgment when dressing for weather conditions. NOTE: This only impacts on employees working in the yard. The supervisor is responsible for evaluating the dress and appearance of employees under his or her supervision. If an employee is not dressed appropriately, the supervisor should take the following steps:
• On the first occasion, a documented verbal warning should be given to the employee, and the department's dress and appearance standards should be reviewed. If the supervisor deems it necessary, the employee may be sent home to change into appropriate clothing.
• On the second occasion, the employee must be sent home to change clothes immediately as well as given a written warning. Further violations may result in discipline up to and including discharge.

Reading Passage 5 — The Great Blue Hole
A. The Great Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It lies near the centre of lighthouse reef about 70 km from the mainland and Belize city. The hole is circular in shape, 318 m (1,043 ft) across and 124 m (407 ft) deep. It was formed during several episodes of quaternary glaciation when sea levels were much lower. Analysis of stalactites found in the Great Blue Hole shows that formation took place 153,000 to 15,000 years ago. As the ocean began to rise again, the cave was flooded. The Great Blue Hole is a part of the larger Belize barrier reef reserve system, a World heritage site of the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
B. Investigations by various expeditions confirmed the hole's origin as typical karst limestone formations, formed before rises in sea level in at least four stages. Stalactites were retrieved from submerged caves, confirming their previous formation above sea level. Some of these stalactites were also off-vertical by 5° in a consistent orientation, indicating that there had also been some past geological shift and tilting of the underlying plateau, followed by a long period in the current plane. The tilt indicates that this was a movement of the land, rather than a rise in sea level alone. Initial measured depth of Great Blue Hole was 125 m (410 ft) which is the most often cited depth up to this day. An expedition by the Cambrian Foundation in 1997 measured the hole's depth as 124 m (407 ft) at its deepest point. This difference in measurement can be explained by ongoing sedimentation or by imprecision in measurements.
C. The ancient processes contributing to Belize atoll development may have begun as many as 70 million years ago and the atolls did not develop around subsiding volcanoes. Instead, they originated atop giant fault blocks; limestone covered ridges that settled in steps, providing a series of offshore platforms for coral growth. After the last ice age, with the slow rise of sea level, coral growth continued upward, creating the precipitous outer walls and the shallow inside lagoon that typifies these distinct formations. Many drop-offs surrounding the Belize atolls are thousands of feet deep, while depths in the shallow lagoons average 10 to 30 feet.
D. The sense of isolation and remoteness that accompanies a visit to the atolls, belies a rich history. Although only archaeological traces remain, it appears the ancient Maya inhabited at least a few of the atoll islands for more than 1,000 years. The recorded history of the atolls begins in the early 16th century with the arrival of the Europeans. From 1528 to 1532 Spanish explorers researched and charted the coastline and offshore reefs of Belize and the Yucatan.
E. Today, it is a popular spot among recreational scuba divers who are lured by the opportunity to dive in sometimes crystal-clear water and meet several species of fish, including midnight parrotfish, Caribbean reef shark, and other juvenile fish species. Other species of sharks, such as the bull shark and hammerheads, have been reported there, but are not regularly sighted. Usually, day trips to the Great Blue Hole are full-day trips from the coastal tourist communities in Belize. Dive excursions to the Great Blue Hole are full-day trips, that usually consist of one dive in the Blue Hole and two additional dives in nearby reefs.
F. Despite the beauty it offers, the Great Blue Hole of Belize also often witnesses accidents including the death of divers. According to reports, several divers have so far lost their lives in the darkness of the Blue Hole for various reasons. Even though there are no currents in the Blue Hole, accounts suggest the death occurs due to nitrogen narcosis as they go deeper. When divers cross 135ft or more, according to reports, they start feeling numbing sensation or euphoria, eventually causing death.
