Reading Passage 1 — Lemur Species
While many species of Lemurs have become extinct, it is believed that there are at least 99 of them that still survive, including subspecies.
A. Ring-tailed Lemur: It is a well-known Lemur, with a body very different from other primates. It is considered to be one of the most intelligent of them as well.
B. Red Ruffed Lemur: The Red Ruffed Lemur is a medium sized species. They don't associate with any other types of Lemurs. They seem to turn their noses up at them and won't even nest or feed in the same locations.
C. Indri Lemur: The Indri Lemur is also called the Babakoto in many regions. This is one of the largest Lemurs found in the world. They seem to have many behaviors that are humanistic. They have characteristics that are different from many other species of Lemurs.
D. Gray Mouse Lemur: It may be hard to believe that the Gray Mouse Lemur is a primate! In fact, many people would likely wager money that it is a rodent by the name and the appearance of it. Yet DNA doesn't lie and so it is correctly classified as a primate.
E. Golden Crown Sifaka: One of the medium sized primates is the Golden-Crowned Sifaka Lemur. They are very limited in number and location. There is hardly anything known about them and they were only identified as a unique species in 1974.
F. Coquerel's Sifaka: The Coquerel's Sifaka lemur is a medium sized one and it belongs to the primate family. It features some very interesting behaviors as well as a look that is different from other Lemurs.
G. Collared Brown Lemur: The Collared Brown lemur is a primate that is medium in size. There are 12 species of Brown Lemurs in the world. They are the most well-known of these Brown lemurs.
H. Aye Aye: Of all the Lemurs in the world, the Aye Aye Lemur is the largest primate that is nocturnal. One may argue that point though, if they didn't realize that this was really a primate.

Reading Passage 2 — History of Writing Implements
Writing is one of the most important inventions of humanity. It allowed us to record our history, ideas, and discoveries and spread them across the globe for all to know. The earliest writing tools were made to be rigid so they could engrave texts into different materials. The Chinese, for instance, carved into turtle shells.
Ancient Sumerians and Babylonians used a triangular stylus to write on soft clay tablets, which would be later baked. Romans wrote on wax tablets with styluses, which allowed them to erase written text. Clay tablets were heavy and brittle. Wax tablets were not heat-resistant. Therefore, people tried to find other solutions.
Scribes of Ancient Egypt used reed pens, which were made from a single reed straw, cut and shaped into a point. Papyrus was used as a surface to write with these pens. Reed pens didn't last long when used and were too stiff, so they were replaced with quills. Quills are pens made from the flight feathers of large birds. Different materials were used for writing with quills, like parchment and vellum.
The popularity of quills lasted until the 19th century when the first pens with metal nibs appeared. John Mitchell from Birmingham was the first to mass-produce pens with metal nibs in 1822. These had a handle and a metal point with a split that held a small amount of ink when dipped. They worked the same as quills but lasted much longer, didn't need to be sharpened, and could be made to a much finer point.
Bartholomew Folsch received a patent in England for a pen with an ink reservoir in 1809. French Government patented a fountain pen in May 1827 which was an invention of Romanian Petrache Poenaru. The ballpoint pen was invented in 1888, by John J. Loud and improved by Laszlo Biro in 1938, which attained commercial success.
Slavoljub Eduard Penkala invented the mechanical pencil in 1906 and the first solid-ink fountain pen in 1907. The felt-tipped pen, which came before markers and highlighters, was an invention of Yukio Horie from Japan. Rollerball pen, which uses water-based ink, appeared in 1963, also in Japan. We still use pens and pencils today for writing and drawing as well as styluses, but those are just on touch screens.
Questions 8–14: True/False/Not Given
Do the following statements agree with the information given in the text? Write TRUE - if the statement agrees with the information FALSE - if the statement contradicts the information NOT GIVEN - if there is no information on this.
- 8
Among writing tools, hard tools preceded other tools like quills and reed pens.
- 9
Wax was the best surface to write on, as whatever was written could be erased.
- 10
Parchment, vellum, and papyrus were surfaces used to write upon.
- 11
The first pens with metal nibs were made in 1822 by John Mitchell from Birmingham.
- 12
The ballpoint pens invented by John Loud did not sell as well as those made by Laszlo Biro.
- 13
The mechanical pencil and the solid ink fountain pen were invented by the same person.
- 14
Markers and highlighters were invented by Yukio Horie from Japan.
Reading Passage 3 — Steve Jobs: A Brief Life History
In 1976, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak created the first Apple computer, the Apple 1. The next year, they unveiled the Apple I, which went on to become the first successful mass-produced computer.
The computer's success made Jobs a millionaire by the time he was 23. By late 1980, Apple was ready to hold an initial public offering (IPO), a sale that generated more capital than any IPO since the 1956 Ford Motor Company's offering and created roughly 300 millionaires instantly, more than any IPO in history.
In 1983, Apple hired PepsiCo executive John Sculley as its CEO. However, Sculley and Jobs had serious differences on the direction the company should take. Those tensions came to a head in 1985, when Jobs resigned, taking a handful of Apple employees with him to create a new company, called NeXT, Inc.
Jobs invested $7 million of his own money, which the company burned through in its first year. Ross Perot stepped in as an investor, and the company released its first product, the NeXT Computer, in 1990. It was state-of-the-art, but, at $9,999, too expensive for most, especially its target customer-the education sector. By 1993, the company had only sold 50,000 machines and decided to switch to software development. The move led to its first profit when it netted $1 million in 1994.
At the same time, however, Jobs became involved with a venture that would go a long way toward cementing his reputation and his fortune, when he bought Lucasfilm's computer graphics division for $10 million. The standalone company was renamed Pixar and created a generation of iconic children's movies, including Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and WALL-E. In 2006, The Walt Disney Company acquired Pixar for $7.4 billion in stock, making Jobs the biggest single shareholder of The Walt Disney Company.
In 2000, Jobs returned to Apple as its CEO, and he began to look beyond the PC again, first with the groundbreaking iPod digital music player, which changed the way people listened to music. Before the iPod's launch in 2001, very few people listened to music on portable digital players. By 2012, more than 350 million devices had been sold worldwide. The iPod's sleek design and easy user interface paved the way for the company's 2007 release of the iPhone, which revolutionized cellular phone design. In 2014 alone, Apple sold roughly 170 million iPhones worldwide. Not content to forever alter the way people used mobile phones and listened to music, Jobs launched the iPad in 2010. The very first version of the compact tablet computer sold more than 250 million units. It has been credited with single-handedly revitalizing the previously moribund market for tablet computers.
In 2011, with Apple at the summit of not just the tech industry, but of all of American business, Jobs resigned as Apple's CEO. He was suffering from pancreatic cancer and knew he would soon die. After his resignation, he stayed on as chairman of the board, continuing to work for Apple until the day before his death.

Reading Passage 4 — Room Cleaning Schedule
When a guest arrives, the room must be perfectly clean, with no sign of previous stay. This needs to be done quickly and efficiently. However, the cleaner needs to take the time to make sure that the room is disinfected and sanitary.
On entering the room, make sure the guests have actually left. Check that they are not sleeping in the bed or are in the bathroom. Make sure there is no luggage or any other possessions. Open all the windows. Firstly, do a lost and found check. Look under the bed, in the wardrobe, in the bedside drawers, on the window sills and on the back of the door for valuables. These include: wallets/makeup bags, clothes and shoes, eyeglasses, sunglasses, jewellery, watches and cash books, medication, electronic devices, and electrical cords. These are to be placed into a Ziplock plastic bag and the number of the room and date should be written on the bag. The bags should be delivered to housekeeping at the end of your cleaning session. These will be returned to guests. Performing this service for guests is unique to this hotel, so please search carefully.
Put all rubbish, debris, empty shopping bags, used tea and coffee supplies into the large trash bag on your cart. Replace dirty cups. Empty rubbish bins for bedroom and bathroom into this. Spray and wipe insides of bins. Strip beds and put sheets and pillow cases down the laundry chute. Do the same with all the towels. Remake beds with fresh sheets. Make sure the bedspread is clean. If it is soiled, replace it with a clean one and add bedspread to chute. Wipe and disinfect all surfaces in the bedroom and bathroom, including remote control, taps, door handles and light switches. Clean the toilet and shower and mop the bathroom floor. Change the roll of toilet paper for a new one. Replace hotel soap, shampoo and disposable bathroom accessories. Clean the mirror and shower door.
Vacuum the bedroom floor, particularly around the telephone console and under the bed. Close the windows again before you leave.

Reading Passage 5 — Eco Holidays in Costa Rica
A. Saving the world is something we all wish we could do but may never get the chance. One way we can make a contribution is through our daily lives and the choices we make. Ever since the 'green' movement people have become increasingly concerned about this issue. Sadly, we can't all quit our jobs and go volunteer in the jungles of Peru or fight to save endangered animals in the Congo. But those of us who would like to do something this summer instead of sitting at home or on the beach now can without sacrificing a well earned break. E-Hols offer Eco Holidays in the exotic location of Costa Rica where holidaymakers can enjoy themselves in a less environmentally damaging way and have the holiday of a life time.
B. For holidaymakers like me, used to travelling in style and staying in four and five star hotels in Europe, an Eco Holiday can be a bit of a shock to the system. On my first day I was bundled into a local bus and travelled 60 km in scorching heat which took over 3 hours. Arriving at the Jose Bondita conservation park I was greeted by Mr Bondita himself. As we drove through the wild vegetation in his 4 by 4 to my wooden hut for the next 2 weeks he pointed out the vast array of iguanas, toucans and monkeys dotted throughout the reserve. In excess of 420 other species of birds are also said to be in the rainforest and along the rocky coastline on the borders of the park. For many of these creatures Jose Bondita is a safe refuge away from poachers and the animal trade.
C. Founded in 1984 the park shot to fame after a BBC documentary revealed its beautiful unspoiled landscapes and rugged terrain to the world and they haven't looked back since. Everything on the site is environmentally friendly from the natural gas used to power the vehicles to the solar power for heating the water and all the amenities. Even the vegetables are grown locally and completely GM and pesticide free. Sustainability is paramount according to Mr Bonita who is keen to avoid turning the park into a tourist destination. Bondita is adamant that his park will not become commercialised. "We are not and never will be for that matter, in it for the money". He asserts his desire to couple education and conservation, 2 themes which his park is built on. "We are not about holidays, we offer life changing experiences that will change how people view their role in our world" he says.
D. As I had purchased the standard 'eco-tourist' package I was granted full access to all the park's activities and facilities. For those on a tighter budget there's the 'eco-basic' package which includes a pass to the park and the facilities only. On my second day we headed off into the unknown on a jeep safari at dusk through the indescribably beautiful scenery. Looking for further excitement I later opted for a zip line tour of the rainforest canopy but turned down bungee jumping off the cliff. Although I still found time for some relaxing strolls and late night fire side chats with other visitors, all of whom were left amazed by the whole experience. My favourite free time activity though was feeding baby wild animals and even helping out with park maintenance fixing fences. By the time my trip had come to an end I had promised never to stay in a hotel complex again. It is safe to say that these experiences are not for everyone but provide a once in a lifetime experience which will alter anyone's view of the importance of animal conservation.
E. With bookings set to increase even further next year Jose Bondita may become a victim of its own success. Demand has far outstripped the park's capacity to comfortably accommodate visitors. Trails tend to be congested and as the amount of vehicles rises so does the impact on the natural ecosystem. The park itself is one of several in the area with more on the way as Bonita's success seems to be spreading. According to a local council representative "we have become aware of the potential for attracting tourism and using that money to protect our environment". In fact, yearly eco-visitors to Costa Rica are estimated at around 1.8 million. Actually, it is somewhat of an international success story. The revenue alone is in the region of $1.9 billion.
